- 0:12Hello friends. Sean here it is the 4th of
- 0:15December You have pressed on play and hello, great to have
- 0:20your company as we begin another week reading through the book of
- 0:23Isaiah together in the midst of the madness of the end of year
- 0:28activities. I hope you are doing well in
- 0:30them. Last week we began the final
- 0:33section of the book of Isaiah and this week we continue
- 0:36through that section. This is the time when Isaiah is
- 0:40writing to God's people who have returned back to their land in
- 0:45Israel. They have been exiled far, far
- 0:48away and they have finally returned.
- 0:51But you know, just waltz on into your old homeland and be awesome
- 0:55and perfect. Pick up just where things left
- 0:58off, only much better. No, you go back.
- 1:01There are people living there. There are all sorts of
- 1:03activities happening that you need to work out.
- 1:06What does it look like to be God's people again in the
- 1:10relative freedom of being back in your space.
- 1:13And so these chapters really try and help them work out how to do
- 1:17this. And the chapter we'll read today
- 1:20really helps them understand that when you come back, you've
- 1:22still got to worship God. You can't get sucked into the
- 1:25Pagan worship of the people who may be living in that space.
- 1:28So stay true to God. So that is what we were going to
- 1:31hear today. God helping shape this nation
- 1:36after they have returned from exile to their homeland.
- 1:38So join me, friends, as we read together.
- 1:42Isaiah, chapter 57. Good people pass away the godly
- 1:57often die before their time, but no one seems to care or wonder
- 2:01why. No one seems to understand that
- 2:05God is protecting them from the evil to come.
- 2:08For those who follow godly paths will rest in peace when they
- 2:12die. But you come here, you witches,
- 2:16children, you offspring of adulterers and prostitutes.
- 2:20Whom do you mock, making faces and sticking out your tongues?
- 2:25You children of sinners and liars.
- 2:28You worship your idols with great passion.
- 2:31Beneath the oaks and under every green tree.
- 2:34You sacrificed your children down in the valleys.
- 2:37Among the jagged rocks in the cliffs, your gods are the smooth
- 2:42stones. In the valleys you worship them
- 2:45with liquid offerings and grain offerings.
- 2:48They not. I are your inheritance.
- 2:52Do you think all this makes me happy?
- 2:55You have committed adultery on every high mountain there.
- 2:58You have worshipped idols and have been unfaithful to me.
- 3:02You have put Pagan symbols on your doorposts and behind your
- 3:05doors. You have left me and climbed
- 3:08into bed with these detestable gods.
- 3:12You have committed yourselves to them.
- 3:14You love to look at their naked bodies.
- 3:16You have gone to Malek with olive oil and many perfumes,
- 3:21sending your agents far and wide even to the world of the dead.
- 3:26You grew weary in your search, but you never gave up desire,
- 3:31gave you renewed strength, and you did not grow weary.
- 3:36Are you afraid of these idols? Do they terrify you?
- 3:40Is that why you have lied to me and forgotten me in my words?
- 3:45Is it because of my long silence that you no longer fear me?
- 3:49Now I will expose your so-called good deeds.
- 3:54None of them will help you. Let's see if your idols can save
- 3:57you when you cry to them for help.
- 4:00Why? A puff of wind can knock them
- 4:02down. If you just breathe on them,
- 4:04they fall over. But whoever trusts in me will
- 4:08inherit the land and possess my holy mountain.
- 4:13God says, rebuild the road. Clear away the rocks and stones
- 4:18so my people can return from captivity.
- 4:22The high and lofty One who lives in eternity.
- 4:25The Holy One says this. I live in the high and holy
- 4:30place with those whose spirits are contrite and humble.
- 4:35I restore the crushed spirit of the humble and revive the
- 4:39courage of those with repentant hearts.
- 4:42For I will not fight against you forever.
- 4:45I will not always be angry. If I were, all people would pass
- 4:50away. All the souls I have made.
- 4:54I was angry, so I punished these greedy people.
- 4:58I withdrew from them, but they kept going on their own stubborn
- 5:02way. I've seen what they do, but I
- 5:05will heal them anyway. I will lead them.
- 5:09I will comfort those who mourn, bringing words of praise to
- 5:13their lips. May they have abundant peace
- 5:17both near and far, says the Lord who heals them.
- 5:22But those who still reject me are like the restless sea, which
- 5:26is never still but continually churns up mud and dirt.
- 5:31There is no peace for the wicked, says My God.
- 5:46Sometimes it feels like we have just messed up too badly to come
- 5:50into your awesome holy presence. Lord feels like you would just
- 5:56not want to see us knowing the corruption in our hearts and the
- 6:01failures of our actions. But here we read that even
- 6:06though your people mess up and turn away from you, your desire
- 6:12is to forgive and to draw us back to you, to heal us, to
- 6:19comfort us, and to put once again words of praise on our
- 6:24lips. And so we return to you, broken
- 6:29and incomplete. And in Jesus we find completion.
- 6:36In Your grace, we find words of praise to you on our lips.
- 6:41And so we praise you, and we hold you in the highest possible
- 6:46place that we can reach. We put you on that loftiest
- 6:49pedestal that we can, and we acknowledge you above all
- 6:54others, our mighty saving God. We pray all these things in that
- 7:01saving name of Jesus. Amen.
