- 0:16The GM got lost deep in the sauce going through Reddit AM as
- 0:20and bullying game designers and selling that their game was bad
- 0:23and they should be fired and their life is bad.
- 0:26So we gave him all a stern talking to and sessions
- 0:28cancelled till he could get his shit together.
- 0:33It was by the way, I gave the stern talking to and that stern
- 0:36talking to violence. Yeah, Isaiah.
- 0:39Isaiah beat his ass. Actually, he's a He's not in a
- 0:42good spot. Look, I am I we.
- 0:45I'm tired of people shitting on the person who's not whose fault
- 0:48it ain't. I'm ready to start some
- 0:50vigilante violence right now. So.
- 0:52I'm going full Batman. Yeah, I'm in like absolute
- 0:57Batman. Absolute bat.
- 1:00Hey, yo, hey, that's crazy. You see, he dropped a building
- 1:04on Bain. It was very funny.
- 1:07I didn't see that, but I saw him killing all of the Nazi guys so
- 1:11good, and then being like, then the one guy being like, but I
- 1:14thought, you don't kill humans. He's like, you're not humans,
- 1:16you're roaches. I was like, hey yo, Batman said.
- 1:20I'll give a fuck that has similar energy to the Hammer of
- 1:26Justice is unisex. You wouldn't hit a woman.
- 1:31Sorry doll. What is it?
- 1:32Sorry man, Face the Hammer of Justice is unisex.
- 1:35Is unisex. It's like you wouldn't hit a
- 1:38woman, would you, Batman? I'm an equal opportunity crime
- 1:41fighter. Yeah.
- 1:45We have Batman pay from the vault.
- 1:46Batman really just had that dog. Some of the quotes for that show
- 1:51are diabolical. Amazing.
- 1:55I learned to astral project from Tibetan monks.
- 1:58Yeah. How did you do that bruise?
- 2:00Yeah. What?
- 2:02Also, wait, how are you still alive?
- 2:03I just learned to hold my breath from Tibetan monks.
- 2:06You're like, I buried you alive. What?
- 2:11Yeah, I like that. That.
- 2:13I mean, I mean, here's the thing that sounds ridiculous, but that
- 2:16kind of was a thing back in the day.
- 2:18Where like, you know, white authors would just be like, I
- 2:21don't know, ancient Tibetan Buddhism as like an excuse and
- 2:24you're like, that's not what it doesn't mean anything.
- 2:28And like, that's a, that's a really old thing for Batman.
- 2:31Just like I went to Tibet and learned some crazy fucking
- 2:34magic. But yeah.
- 2:36That's what I mean. Like back in the day they
- 2:37actually used to do that kind of shit, even though it makes no
- 2:40sense and it's just kind of vaguely oriental racism.
- 2:43One of my favorite things in Batman, Brave and the Bold is
- 2:45when he's fighting Gentleman Ghost, he's like, you can't
- 2:48punch a spirit Batman. And he's like, well, it's a good
- 2:51thing I brought these ants. Metal knuckle dusters, isn't it?
- 2:57What? A good thing I have exactly what
- 2:59I need. Magic ghost punching brass
- 3:03knuckles and he pulled out the bat shaped brass nasties.
- 3:11I mean. It works.
- 3:15I like that he had to keep the the logic running that he's like
- 3:17no, I have to literally punch the ghost.
- 3:21Yeah, yeah. There wasn't like an alternative
- 3:23to that place. No, it wasn't.
- 3:24No, not like a not like an NF metal Cortana or like Batarangs.
- 3:28It specifically had to be brass. Hands yeah, I'm going to beat
- 3:33the dog shit out of this ghost so, you know that's a thing
- 3:41anyway, we're we're we're back in black, don't you know?
- 3:47And yeah, I, we have something that I that I'm very excited to
- 3:53talk about. I got my, I got my.
- 3:55My Jimmy's rustled, my Willy's moistened.
- 3:58No, that's not. That's not Nope.
- 4:05Just going to ignore that I said that one.
- 4:06No, it's too late. It's too late.
- 4:08It's on the air. It's on the air forever.
- 4:09It's on the air. It is.
- 4:10It's true. But however the kids say
- 4:15excited, my Rizzler is doing tricks on it.
- 4:17I don't know. I don't know what they say.
- 4:24My my my skippity is toileting freshly.
- 4:29I don't. Apparently they they cut the the
- 4:31studio that agreed to make that movie like stole all the rights
- 4:34from the series creator. I don't know how they did that,
- 4:38but they did for Skippity Toilet, yeah.
- 4:41That's crazy. What?
- 4:42Yeah, I don't know how they pulled that off, but apparently
- 4:45like he's been completely shut out of the project and it's his
- 4:48IP. That's fucked up, dude.
- 4:51They may have exploded the legal, the legal loophole that
- 4:53he's using Gmod assets. So it's not entirely his IP,
- 4:56but. Probably, yeah.
- 4:58That's a good guess. Anyway, we are talking about a
- 5:02thing I'm very excited about, which is to say Apocalypse World
- 5:07Third Edition is on the way. Baby.
- 5:09The Kickstarter is up and funded in like 18 minutes.
- 5:14I don't know 3. Yep, I'm on the Kickstarter
- 5:18right now. It's 18 minutes.
- 5:19Oh, you're right. It funded in 18 minutes, which
- 5:25now granted, is not that crazy 'cause they only asked for
- 5:2818,000, which is like, not a lot, but they're currently
- 5:31sitting at 161,000. So they've busted every stretch
- 5:35goal and are a little bit over what they asked for with 23 days
- 5:40to go on the Kickstarter. Oh my God.
- 5:43So yeah, yeah, yeah. Apparently Apocalypse World 1st
- 5:47edition, or was it first or second?
- 5:49I think I saw somewhere that Vincent Baker said, I think it
- 5:52was first edition busted 150,000.
- 5:56That was, it's like that was the highest.
- 5:58Oh, wow. So they've already busted,
- 5:59busted past that. So that's good.
- 6:04And quite frankly, I can't say I'm particularly surprised
- 6:07because, you know, fucking the boys are back in town with this
- 6:11one. Yeah, yeah, fucking so it's,
- 6:17it's happening. We're we just, we have obviously
- 6:20the game's not out yet as of recording, but we have quite a
- 6:24lot of preview information in the Kickstarter to look over.
- 6:28Honestly, more than I was expecting.
- 6:29So that's what we're doing before we do though, as always,
- 6:37if you would like to hit follow or subscribe on your platform of
- 6:39choice, that'd be real nice, please and thank you.
- 6:42And if you're feeling especially generous and you'd like to leave
- 6:44a little donation, the link is in the description now.
- 6:51So I, I have, I have a light. Well, I guess I, I'm going to
- 6:58explain kind of what, what this is, just in case some people
- 7:02might be a little confused because I, I have mentioned, and
- 7:06I don't know if you remember this or not, Isaiah, I've
- 7:08mentioned playing this version of Apocalypse World before.
- 7:13And some people may have heard of Apocalypse World burned over
- 7:17already as a thing. And so they might be like, why
- 7:21is there a Kickstarter for a thing that already exists?
- 7:25So just to explain the whole thing, I mean, I don't know if
- 7:28you remember, but the the campaign that I was a player in
- 7:32like however many years ago at this point, I don't know, like 4
- 7:35years ago, I want to say that was Apocalypse World burned over
- 7:39and. That's the one where they
- 7:41removed the sex moves, right? Yeah, so essentially that's the
- 7:46whole, this is the whole conversation here.
- 7:48So Apocalypse World Burned over originally was a Zine that
- 7:55Vincent Baker, the creator put out himself and was and for
- 8:00those who don't know, Azine is like a little it's kind of an
- 8:03outdated phrase, but that's what he calls it.
- 8:05But it's it's a basically it's a hack book for for regular
- 8:13apocalypse Rd. So he put out this like little
- 8:14mini supplement hack book thing called burned over.
- 8:19And the point of Burned Over was to basically make Apocalypse
- 8:25World a little bit more PG13, because the base game is very
- 8:29much R rated. It uses harsh language, it's
- 8:32written in a very crass way. It's very like, it's almost a
- 8:35little combative with the reader.
- 8:38A little bit. Yeah, on purpose, yeah.
- 8:42And so burned over was like APG 13 version of the game.
- 8:47And the reason, if I remember correctly, and I forget where I
- 8:50saw this, it might have actually been in the Reddit AMA that
- 8:53we're going to talk about. But the reason that he made
- 8:57burned over was to play Apocalypse World with his kids
- 9:00when they were younger and not have to worry about, you know,
- 9:04sex moves and things and moves like not to be fucked with.
- 9:09And you know, characters like the Skinner having very
- 9:14questionable like sexual seduction type moves and stuff
- 9:19like, you know, shit like that. So to play with their kids, they
- 9:23made this version Burned Over. And then they're like, well,
- 9:25some people might like the idea of APG 13 kind of styled
- 9:28Apocalypse World. So they put it out as a hack
- 9:31book. So the original Burned Over does
- 9:34not work on its own. It is not a stand alone game.
- 9:37It is a hack of Apocalypse World second edition.
- 9:40So like you need the base game to play Burned over all these
- 9:46years later, apparently more or less Vincent Baker and his wife,
- 9:51Meg brain Meg Meg something. And so, yeah, basically after
- 10:00making after making the initial burned over heck book Vincent
- 10:05Baker and his wife, whose name I I I can never remember how to
- 10:08say because I don't know that I've heard it out loud.
- 10:11It's M e.g. UEY Meg mega wee Meg, I don't
- 10:16know. I don't know how you're supposed
- 10:17to say it, but Meg they both continued to work on burned over
- 10:22is Long story short on that one. So basically they just they kept
- 10:29working on it and at some point they were like, well, we've done
- 10:31so much work on that that this has basically become its own
- 10:34game. Let's just make it third edition
- 10:37of apocalypse world. So now Apocalypse World burned
- 10:43over the Kickstarter is for Apocalypse World three like it
- 10:46is the third edition of the game.
- 10:50So for the sake of confusion if or for the sake of clarifying
- 10:54confusion, I should say if I mention if I say burned over,
- 10:59I'm referring to the old one. If I say third edition, I'm
- 11:03referring to the current one. Because unfortunately he did the
- 11:05annoying thing where he gave them both the same name, which I
- 11:08hate by the way. Why?
- 11:10But here we are. I, you know, obviously we're
- 11:15we're getting early play test content, but I do kind of hope
- 11:20that they don't throw the sex moves away.
- 11:24They're gone. Heavies.
- 11:25Has he said that they're just gone for good?
- 11:27They are gone there. There is a there is a reason he
- 11:29talked about a little in the AMA, but they are 100% gone.
- 11:35So we'll we'll get there. But yes, they are.
- 11:38They're they are. That is one thing that is
- 11:41definitely not coming back. Damn, dude.
- 11:45Yeah, I have mixed feelings on that one.
- 11:48So let's, so we're gonna, we're gonna start, we're gonna start
- 11:54with there's a page on the Kickstarter that bows over the
- 11:57changes real broadly. So we're just gonna go over
- 12:01those real quick and then we'll look at the but that the
- 12:09preview, preview material stuff and then we'll get through
- 12:14however many I I saved Vincent Baker did an A Reddit AMA in the
- 12:20Pbta subreddit shortly after the Kickstarter went live.
- 12:24So I perused through looking for interesting responses and we'll
- 12:27see how many we do or don't get to.
- 12:29But yeah, well, here I'll, I will.
- 12:34I will tell you the reason. I know for a fact that they're
- 12:38not coming back is because I basically asked is this version
- 12:42of the game also going to be a bit more PG13?
- 12:45And the answer was yes for sure. And the reason he he said
- 12:51because So what I said was I played a version of the game
- 12:55called Burned Over back in like 2020 or whatever, 20/21.
- 12:58It was a version of the game where the GM wanted to run
- 13:00because it was a bit more PG13. Is this project a continuation
- 13:05of that or is this a full third edition of the original game?
- 13:10I asked because the shared name had me a little confused and his
- 13:12reply was both. As we developed that version of
- 13:15the game, it overtook and merged with our ideas for a third
- 13:18edition. Now they're the same thing.
- 13:19So the Kickstarter is a full stand alone 3rd edition.
- 13:22I said OK I see. Does the PG13 writing style
- 13:25carry through? I'm a fan of the harsher tone of
- 13:28Apocalypse World and he said thanks for saying it's really
- 13:31divisive. 3rd edition doesn't swear as much, but it has a
- 13:36different hard edge. It's angrier and more bitter in
- 13:40its humor. It still has a lot of character.
- 13:42You might like it, you might not.
- 13:44That was his response to my question on the AMA.
- 13:47So yes, it's sticking with the PG13 tone, and apparently the R
- 13:51rated tone that it previously had was divisive, which I
- 13:54thought was interesting. I did not know that.
- 13:58I'm not terribly surprised, I suppose, but I.
- 14:00Was gonna say, yeah, I mean, I, I it's definitely, you know,
- 14:05transgressive I think is a good word.
- 14:06But like, I don't know. I kind of like that it had that,
- 14:11like, unabashed edge to it. And like, is it kind of a
- 14:14product of its time? Yeah.
- 14:15But like, it's not always a bad thing.
- 14:18I like the unabashed edge, especially because I feel like
- 14:23tabletop games in general avoid that quite a lot.
- 14:28Like I feel like tabletop games are are are often like tabletop.
- 14:34The books, the rule books themselves are often written
- 14:38pretty dry and neutral in their tone on purpose most of the
- 14:42time. And the, the, the unabashed,
- 14:50somewhat harsh way that Apocalypse World has written, I
- 14:53felt like made it more fun to just read as a book, you know,
- 14:57like regardless of the game itself, just made it more fun to
- 14:59read as a book 'cause it felt like different, a little
- 15:02interesting and it had a different voice to it.
- 15:05So yes, I agree that I am a little sad that that's going
- 15:07away. But based on how he responded to
- 15:10me on the AMA, he's basically saying that it's still gonna
- 15:14have a very particular voice to it.
- 15:17It's just going to be a different kind of voice.
- 15:19So it might still be interesting, you know, we'll
- 15:24see. But yes, I agree.
- 15:28I, I feel like the R rated vibe is a little untapped to a
- 15:34certain degree. Shadow of the Demon Lord is
- 15:38another game that does a very similar thing where it's written
- 15:40very like are rated and nasty, and it makes it kind of a little
- 15:45more interesting. You know, there's been books
- 15:52that like there's the Book of Vile Darkness, obviously for 3rd
- 15:54edition D&D, but I feel like that went a little, Yeah.
- 15:59I mean, that's. That's like a thinly veiled
- 16:03fetish book in the. Yeah, the Book of All Darkness
- 16:06is weird. And then obviously there's the
- 16:08the infamous RPG game Fatal, but like, that game is obviously not
- 16:12what I want. That is what.
- 16:14The fuck is that? I've never heard of that before.
- 16:16Oh, you've never heard of Fatal? Oh, you should look up a little
- 16:21after we're done here. But basically, Fatal is a FATAL
- 16:27is kind of like if Garth Ennis wrote a role-playing game.
- 16:30Oh. Jesus, All right, I'm already
- 16:31fucking and like that you've lost me.
- 16:36It is a game where cock size is a thing and there are rape rules
- 16:43and also rules for the circumference of your asshole.
- 16:47And that's not a joke. It's also just a really bad
- 16:51game. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:53You want me? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:00I'm surprised you haven't heard. It's very imp.
- 17:02To be clear, I'm not laughing about that middle one, but the
- 17:04third one? Really.
- 17:06Yeah, the circumference of the assault, yeah, Send.
- 17:10Me, the middle one, the assault stuff.
- 17:12That's not funny. Well.
- 17:17I think these circumference rules exist for that middle one,
- 17:20if I remember. God damn it.
- 17:23Yeah, yeah. Fuck me, I don't know, I might.
- 17:27Be I I might be wrong on that particular tidbit.
- 17:30I don't, I haven't read fatal personally, but I've heard a lot
- 17:33of people talk about it online. And I, I, I've heard the rumor,
- 17:36the, the, the tells the stories. It's, it's, it's also just a
- 17:40really bad game. Like it's, it's also really
- 17:43mechanically just a shit tabletop game.
- 17:45So on top of being the raunchiest, nastiest shit you've
- 17:48ever seen in your life, it's just bad.
- 17:50So anytime people basically, you know, anytime people are like,
- 17:54what's the worst RPG? You've ever seen in your life,
- 17:57inevitably someone will bring up fatal.
- 17:59Oh. Oh, you looking at the cover?
- 18:04Yeah. 22 white people in distressed butchering a bunch of
- 18:09colored people with suspiciously curly hair.
- 18:12Not not really a vibe. Wow.
- 18:16OK, yes Sir, Brother, what the fuck?
- 18:21Yeah, I'm again shocked you haven't heard of this game.
- 18:25I I have not. Oh, there's a rule for racial
- 18:28slurs. Oh my God, yes.
- 18:30Sir, yes, Sir. What the?
- 18:37Yeah, what the fuck? Yeah.
- 18:44Anyway, Long story short, I'm not, I'm not asking for that,
- 18:50obviously. So like, yes, there are some
- 18:54RPGs out there that take it way too far.
- 18:58I don't think Apocalypse World Second Edition took it too far
- 19:01was kind of the point I was getting at, but you know.
- 19:08It just keeps getting worse. Yeah, yeah.
- 19:10Don't, don't. Yeah.
- 19:11Don't keep looking. It's yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:16It's bad. But anyway, so yes, the
- 19:24basically the sex moves are out because the game is going to
- 19:27retain that PG13 tone. That's kind of the long and
- 19:31short of that particular bit. All right, so let's look at it
- 19:35just real quickly. What's the over?
- 19:37What's like the broad overview on the play on the Playbook
- 19:41changes? What changed from second edition
- 19:43to 3rd edition? And this is the overview on the
- 19:46Kickstarter. So some of the playbooks have
- 19:49new names? I would say quite a quite a few.
- 19:53Quite a lot of them have new names.
- 19:54Most of them got a new name. I think Aggro is a new stat.
- 20:00Hot is gone as a stat. It is.
- 20:03I noticed that. Yes, seduce and manipulate is
- 20:07also gone. Demanding something?
- 20:12Tackle a challenge reason with someone and attack someone are
- 20:15in. The new basic moves go aggro,
- 20:18sucker someone and seduce and manipulate are gone.
- 20:21Backing someone's play and interrupting someone are in as
- 20:25new basic moves. Helping or interfering was out
- 20:27or is out. Marking each stat for XP is in.
- 20:32Highlighting stats is out. I'm a little sad about that one.
- 20:35I won't lie, I really liked the highlighting system.
- 20:39I think it made a lot of sense as a fun way to nudge your
- 20:44fellow players in certain directions to kind of give them
- 20:46a carrot. I like that.
- 20:48I don't necessarily know why that's gone, but you know, sigh.
- 20:53PSI is a new rating. It's a new it's not quite a
- 20:57stat, but it's sort of like a stat.
- 21:00So I thought Spider brought up in the previous in second
- 21:03edition even like a lesser degree but I'm pretty sure it
- 21:08came up. So I think there's sigh harm in
- 21:12second edition, but I think that's the only place that it
- 21:16shows up. If I remember correctly, yes,
- 21:20there is sigh harm, but it wasn't really it wasn't really
- 21:27like a a proper fleshed out mechanic I guess is the best way
- 21:31to put it. Whereas now it's going to be all
- 21:34of the playbooks have a sigh rating and the reason for that
- 21:38is because certain moves and stuff will interact with your
- 21:41side rating. So it's like it's tied to the
- 21:45players more directly now. I guess is better way to put it.
- 21:50Barter. It now works like a stat.
- 21:53It is essentially your buying power rather than spending
- 21:57barter as a currency. I'm fine with that.
- 22:02I think like, I don't know, rolling it as a stat I have seen
- 22:07other games do, but also barter was pretty simplified in the
- 22:13previous rules. So there's a part of me that
- 22:15almost feels like I don't know, I haven't played with it yet, so
- 22:21I can't say, but I don't know that that change was like,
- 22:25basically, I don't, it's not going to make anything worse,
- 22:27but I don't know if it was necessary either.
- 22:29I don't know if it's going to make anything particularly feel
- 22:31cooler, you know what I mean? It does sort of kind of, I don't
- 22:38know if it's a it, it limits the uniqueness of characters like
- 22:42the like in Oh God, what are they called again?
- 22:48I don't know the brain kicker on the like on the topic on the
- 22:56topic of like the side rating it, it might make the character
- 22:59whose whole thing is being weird and magicky kind of less unique.
- 23:06OK, I was just talking about barter, so you just confused me
- 23:08deeply. Sorry, I'm sorry, I was stuck on
- 23:10that, 'cause I I was thinking you're.
- 23:11Stuck on the side thing, yes. OK, well I don't think that's
- 23:16gonna be the case because based on the preview of the playbooks,
- 23:20it seems like most people will have a SIGH rating of 0 or -1 by
- 23:25default anyway. Most people are not gonna get
- 23:29SIGH, only certain playbooks are actually gonna like, it's not
- 23:33like everybody has like a baseline.
- 23:35It's just like it's a rating that you can have that you will
- 23:39get from certain moves. So like if you look, if you
- 23:42actually, if you pull open the playbooks, if you look at the
- 23:45brain picker's moves, the one that's called embrace the
- 23:48maelstrom, you get plus one weird.
- 23:51You also get plus one side. So like not everyone is gonna
- 23:57have a sigh rating that it like most people are probably going
- 24:01to have a 0. So it's not going to, I don't
- 24:04think it's going to eat their lunch in a particular way.
- 24:06With that in mind, do you think maybe it was just a waste to put
- 24:10it on the character sheet for anyone but them anyway?
- 24:13It just kind of seems like a waste of space on a honestly
- 24:16pretty cluttered character sheet.
- 24:18I would say no. I think it makes sense to put it
- 24:21on the no because a couple other so like the gear cutter
- 24:27interacts with PSI a bit, the hocus interacts with PSI like a
- 24:30few of them do. Also you can always pick up
- 24:33moves from other playbooks. Remember true a lot of every
- 24:38every playbook has the ability to take moves from somebody
- 24:41else. So the chance of being like I
- 24:43want to dip into PSI stuff is always present.
- 24:48Also, it it gives the GM, you know, it gives the MC another
- 24:53potential Ave. of like attack, quote UN quote for how to kind
- 24:56of like mess with your players or it's another number to like
- 25:00use in some way. So no, I I think it makes sense
- 25:04to have it on there. Fair enough.
- 25:07But anyway, yes, so barter, barter you do not spend.
- 25:12Basically you don't spend barter like gold anymore.
- 25:15It's not like a basic currency, it's a stat that you roll on.
- 25:22We don't know if there's going to be any other moves you now.
- 25:25So you choose between scavenge options during character
- 25:30creation and you can change your choice later.
- 25:32And that that is what sets your barter stat essentially.
- 25:38I have not. I have not seen any indication
- 25:41within the playbooks of if you're going to be able to
- 25:44manipulate your barter stat in other ways, like bring it up or
- 25:48down, like dock it or anything. But I have a feeling that will
- 25:51be a rule in some capacity in the full game, because I'd be
- 25:54shocked if it wasn't. Every playbook's improvement
- 26:00options have been revised and so have the Ungiven future
- 26:07improvement options, Which is to say there's just a little spot
- 26:09to show like these. You can also get later.
- 26:12That's yeah. Special moves are out.
- 26:14Which are special moves are actually what the sex Everyone
- 26:17calls them sex moves, but they were technically called special
- 26:20moves. So special moves are gone.
- 26:24As we said, first impression is in, look is out.
- 26:28That's just what your character looks like.
- 26:30It's now what's everybody's first impression, your
- 26:32character. I don't.
- 26:33That part's whatever. All of the playbooks have 5 or 6
- 26:40starting moves to choose from in second edition.
- 26:42A couple of playbooks did not, which is that's a pretty big
- 26:45change actually. Quite a few playbooks, maybe not
- 26:48a few, not quite a few, but there were a couple of playbooks
- 26:50that only had like one or two starting moves and you just got
- 26:55them in the beginning and that was it.
- 26:56I believe. Like the Chopper only has Yeah,
- 27:01the chopper only has 2 starting moves, which is Pack Alpha and
- 27:05fucking thieves. And you start with both of them
- 27:07right from character creation. So you don't get any new chopper
- 27:11moves. Now everybody has like 5 or 6.
- 27:14Yeah, I think there's a oh, the hard holder also only started
- 27:19with leadership and wealth. That was another one.
- 27:22So yeah, a couple of people did not have as many moves as the
- 27:25others. So now everyone has much, not
- 27:28exactly the same amount but closer amounts between each
- 27:31other. Which normally I would be like
- 27:34oh but that feels like homogenizing.
- 27:37But in this case, I feel like it opens up a lot of cooler
- 27:42potential for quite a few of the playbooks.
- 27:44No, I, I agree with you. Yeah, no, IA 100% agree with you
- 27:48on that one. It, it feels like I know the
- 27:50other in second edition, the other classes had the playbooks
- 27:52had stuff to bolster that and still make it feel interesting.
- 27:56But the fact that now it just kind of opens up your options
- 27:59like you said. I I like that a lot.
- 28:00I am a little sad that we lost Gunlugger and it's been renamed
- 28:04to Volatile. Yeah, I don't.
- 28:06Know the rename I thought was odd.
- 28:08I kind of like Gunlugger. It's it's a really evocative
- 28:10like. It's a good.
- 28:11Name. Yeah, it's a good one.
- 28:13Battle babe also gone. I believe that's.
- 28:16Battle Battle Babe was removed completely.
- 28:19Is not has no equivalent because Battle Babe is kind of is more
- 28:25of that R rating thing, you know?
- 28:27I, you know, I feel like we lost an opportunity to just rename it
- 28:30to War Boy. True, I will say though don't be
- 28:35too sad because they are going to rework all of the old
- 28:40playbooks and put those out also.
- 28:41Oh, let's fucking go. Oh is is that what Harrow Queen
- 28:43is? No, that's that's the no, the
- 28:47Harrow Queen is the the world's of warriors of warriors of the
- 28:51world ablaze playbooks. Which are can you?
- 28:54Can you give me a quick explanation on what that is?
- 28:56I saw that in the AMA and I didn't know what it was.
- 28:59It is a set of playbooks to play sword and sorcery post
- 29:02apocalypse. Oh, that's cool.
- 29:06So like you have the Axe King, a ruler of a stronghold, and his
- 29:09warrior Garrison. A bloody sword is a free
- 29:11warrior. The Errant is an explorer, a
- 29:13treasure seeker. The Harrow Queen is the chosen
- 29:15leader of a fierce and independent enclave.
- 29:17The Hunting Kite is a warrior and a killer.
- 29:20The Inheritor is a keeper of ancient knowledge.
- 29:24The lost priest is the whose faith is broken but whose powers
- 29:27remain. The warlock is a sorcerer at the
- 29:29height of their power. So it's like instead of psychic
- 29:33maelstrom powers, the apocalypse caused everyone to get magic.
- 29:37That's cool. OK.
- 29:39Yeah, so it's like a whole other way to play the game.
- 29:42No, the classic playbooks are getting reworked.
- 29:48They are, they are basically he's just gonna like go through
- 29:52him, clean him up a little and spit him back out more or less.
- 29:55Is the so the Angel or the battle babe is in there?
- 30:01Awesome. Honestly the only one that got
- 30:03cut completely and didn't get reworked is the battle babe.
- 30:09So the other ones all basically got reworked and renamed.
- 30:18Standard moves are in those we'll talk about later.
- 30:23Stat substitution moves are almost entirely out, and stat
- 30:27bonus moves are almost entirely out.
- 30:29Which is to say, on your moves list in 1st and 2nd edition,
- 30:34there were some moves that would be like, you're a weird guy.
- 30:38You get plus one weird. And like, that was it.
- 30:41Those are gone now, basically because everyone's like, those
- 30:43are boring as shit. And it's like, yeah, kind of.
- 30:47They are boring, I'll give you that.
- 30:49But I like the substitution ones.
- 30:50I like where it's like, you know, your immense strength lets
- 30:54you roll, you know, something with aggro rather than cool, you
- 30:58know? Like most people do not like the
- 31:01substitution ones. Oh see, I like those a lot.
- 31:04Yeah, so like to to give an example of which ones we're
- 31:06talking about. So like the brainer has one
- 31:08called unnatural in in second edition, the brainer has
- 31:12unnatural lust transfiction when you try to seduce someone, roll
- 31:16plus weird instead of plus hot and then they have preternatural
- 31:20at will brain attunement you get plus one weird.
- 31:23So like those kinds of moves are gone, he said mostly gone.
- 31:29I haven't actually been able to figure out, I haven't seen any
- 31:34of the substitution ones anywhere.
- 31:35I've seen a couple moves that do look like just sort of stat
- 31:38bump. I haven't seen the substitution
- 31:42ones, but I didn't I've been I kind of jumped around a lot, so
- 31:46I might have just missed them. I also, I did, you know, a very
- 31:49brief skim. I I I didn't see any either.
- 31:52Yeah. But yeah, so the substitutions
- 31:59are out. And then on the back of the
- 32:02playbook, all of the playbooks, gears, all of the playbooks gear
- 32:07and stuff has been revised, often dramatically.
- 32:09I would say that is quite true. Everyone has totally new gear.
- 32:14I was, I was hoping this was in your notes.
- 32:16Yes, I wanted to put some attention to this 'cause I like
- 32:19that everyone has like a cool gear list.
- 32:21It's everybody has. I did put it in my notes, yes.
- 32:24Perfect. Yeah, 'cause it just, I was
- 32:25like, oh, there's some of that blades that I like.
- 32:28Yes everyone has their own gear list with like 1 exception, but
- 32:36it's not that big of a deal for the one exception in in this
- 32:38case. So the one exception being the
- 32:42Maestro D technically doesn't have the gear list, but in their
- 32:47gear section it says that you start with like a wicked blade
- 32:51like a kitchen knife or a razor sharp scissors.
- 32:53So they get they get a little bit less, but they're also not
- 32:56the character where you'd really care about that anyway.
- 32:58So not the end of the world. And they might, they could
- 33:03potentially get something later. But yes, everyone else got a
- 33:06distinctive gear list. Some characters, some playbooks
- 33:12data already have that in second edition, for example the gun
- 33:17lugger. Had.
- 33:18The gun lugger had a special list.
- 33:21The Skinner, if I remember correctly, has their, what did
- 33:25they call them? They're like fanciful weapons or
- 33:27something like that. Hold on, let me see if I can
- 33:29find it. The their Skinner gear.
- 33:32Skinner gear? Yeah.
- 33:32Oh, gracious weapons. That's what I was like.
- 33:35They had a list of gracious weapons.
- 33:36So like some people did already have that.
- 33:40Sorry, what? I just fucking you know, I'm
- 33:43playing, I'm playing DS3 with Kate again and every time they
- 33:46had the shrine handmaiden goes right?
- 33:48I just think of the fun Italian animation.
- 33:53Right down the road. Yeah, it's that, but it's just,
- 33:55I'm sorry. Why are you looking for the sun
- 34:01in the abyss? Yeah, and then it says effects.
- 34:10I'm not entirely sure what he means by this, but he said
- 34:13effects, Harm, armor, sigh, and barter have all been
- 34:15standardized on the back. I don't not entirely sure what
- 34:21that like. I know what he means.
- 34:23There's a section explaining it. I guess he just means
- 34:26standardized as in like everyone has explained the same way on
- 34:29their sheet I guess is what he's saying.
- 34:32Yeah, I don't know. I it's the effects.
- 34:35If you go on, if you look at any of the playbooks and Scroll down
- 34:38to where it says effects, that's that little section is what
- 34:42that's talking about. Yeah, yeah.
- 34:48Yeah. So I, I think he's just saying
- 34:49it's like the same for everybody.
- 34:50It's organized the same way and then hard zones are in hard
- 34:56zones. I didn't, I didn't enter.
- 34:59I was not MC ING when I played the burned over hack.
- 35:02So I didn't really interact with the hard zones.
- 35:05But my understanding if I think if I'm figuring it out, is that
- 35:09hard zones are like a setting thing where you're essentially
- 35:15you're declaring like these zones exist And by declaring
- 35:22that the players can also, the players have abilities that will
- 35:25interact with hard zones. So for example, the operator has
- 35:31their port, their ports of call and it says whatever you need,
- 35:35you know where to go, choose hard zone locations for up to
- 35:39five. And then so you have a couple of
- 35:42like statements. So like the first one says, I
- 35:45know people here who can get me strange things, curious things,
- 35:48new things. And then so you pick one of the
- 35:50hard zones that are in play and you put that on that list.
- 35:55So look, I'm, I'm popping open the old burned over book.
- 35:59It's like hard zones, the drowned city.
- 36:01The operator's like, OK, if I go to the drowned city, I know
- 36:05people there that can get me weird shit 'cause that's one of
- 36:08my ports of call. So that's kind of how the the
- 36:10hard zones interact between the two sides of the table.
- 36:15They don't necessarily have to be dangerous areas, they just
- 36:17have to be established areas of play like like notable
- 36:21locations. They're established.
- 36:23They are established zones, Yeah.
- 36:25I mean, they're going to be dangerous.
- 36:27They have the potential to be dangerous in the in the sense
- 36:30that they have the they can go on the threat map for the MC,
- 36:35but like they don't, yeah, they are just, they are zones.
- 36:38They're areas that have like descriptors tied to them and
- 36:42stuff, and they have little bullet points of like notable
- 36:45things, notable locations in them.
- 36:48I'm, I'm not in love with the name hard zone because it, it
- 36:51sort of, it evokes like nuclear wasteland or minefield as
- 36:58opposed to like maybe CD center of trade.
- 37:01You know, it's not like it what they mean is Mos Eisley
- 37:04spaceport. What they're giving is
- 37:07minefield. Yeah, so like the list of the
- 37:11hard zones in the burned over hack book, it says the
- 37:16bottomless vaults, the drowned City, the fallen city, the
- 37:18frozen world, the overgrown Wilds, the poison land, the
- 37:22scorched wastes. Obviously, those are like
- 37:25evocative, open-ended, you know, descriptors.
- 37:29And then like if you go down to it, the bottomless waste, for
- 37:31examples, locations in the bottomless waste, the baffles,
- 37:34the chanting colony, the gardens, the long dark, the
- 37:37moon. Well, the Stew, the transfer,
- 37:39the water locks, right? So like, yeah, they're not quite
- 37:45Mos Eisley Cantina. I mean, well, I guess they could
- 37:47be Mos Ansley Cantina is the idea.
- 37:51But yes, they are not explicitly like really bad place.
- 37:58So yes I agree the name hard zones is a little questionable.
- 38:03But again, I did not interact with this mechanic because I was
- 38:06not MC ING so I don't exactly know how it comes into play.
- 38:10And my character did not have any particular ability that the
- 38:14hard zones mattered to me in any way.
- 38:15So. But yes, hard zones are now
- 38:20listed on the character sheet and what it says is ask the MC
- 38:25which hard zones are in play or else choose with the other
- 38:28players. You can adapt your gear and
- 38:30other options to the hard zones as necessary.
- 38:33So basically, you know, if it wouldn't make sense for you to
- 38:36have a certain kind of equipment in a certain kind of hard zone,
- 38:38it's like, OK, you know, adapt it.
- 38:41Basically. Ultimately it's a setting
- 38:42building mechanic. That's really what it is.
- 38:44Do we need that on the character sheet though?
- 38:48I did find that a little odd that it was on the character
- 38:50sheet, yes. Like there are certain things
- 38:52like like again when we talk about sigh but hard zones that
- 38:55literally does nothing definitively if it doesn't come
- 39:01into play. I think the reason that it is on
- 39:04the character sheet on the back, keep in mind it is, I mean we're
- 39:08looking at APDF, but it is on the backside of the character
- 39:10sheet. I think the reason it's there is
- 39:12because the backside of the character sheet has steps for
- 39:15you to go through and the hard zone thing is effectively
- 39:21saying, hey you player, make sure to check in with your GM
- 39:25what hard zones are in play like, what's the mood, what's
- 39:28the setting, what's the like? It's like a reminder.
- 39:31But did it need to be on the character sheet?
- 39:36Maybe not. You know, I could see the
- 39:41argument for cutting it out for sure.
- 39:43It's not taking up that much space though either.
- 39:46So it's not super the end of the world.
- 39:48It's not. But in in comparison to two
- 39:51point O, this character sheet is very busy and I kind of liked
- 39:54the simplicity of the earlier character.
- 39:56It is busier than the second edition character sheet, yes,
- 40:01and it's a lot bit. I mean it's they've gotten
- 40:04busier with every character sheet, right, like the first
- 40:06edition character sheet was the most sparse, I would say well,
- 40:09no, I guess it was pretty pretty much pretty.
- 40:12I guess it was about the. Same one, about the same as one
- 40:14to two, yeah. Yeah, yeah, I guess it was about
- 40:17the same. Like I know, I know it's rich
- 40:18coming from me, the crunch guy, but I'm like, I can, I can
- 40:22appreciate the the the. It's the.
- 40:27Style of a minimalist character. Sheet yeah, I think it's it's
- 40:33because Apocalypse World has that tighter, cleaner style, so
- 40:41it it it feels weird to stuff more stuff on the character
- 40:45sheet, but it's not it's not that much more.
- 40:49It's kind of feels like a lot more.
- 40:51It's really not that much more, you know what I mean?
- 40:53It's kind of. Yeah, I guess.
- 40:55And it's also. I don't know, the layout is
- 40:57pretty good, so it's not like hard to read.
- 40:59At least I don't find it hard to read.
- 41:01No, it's not hard to read. It's definitely not hard to
- 41:03read. I I would still say, you know,
- 41:06if you're going to use the bog standard D&D stab lock character
- 41:10sheet, I would say this is certainly simpler, but I fear we
- 41:15might be drifting away from what made it so good.
- 41:19Yeah. I mean, I don't know that we'll
- 41:20drift much further though. So like, you know, I'm not too
- 41:24worried. All right, so that was kind of
- 41:29the overview that Vincent Baker put on the Kickstarter.
- 41:32So we got a preview of the basic moves.
- 41:36So as I mentioned, we now have a new stat.
- 41:43We have aggro instead of Hot. So with a new stat, we also got
- 41:492 new basic moves. These are basically just they're
- 41:54like threat moves or well one of them is a threat move actually,
- 41:59and the other one is kind of like an athletics check style
- 42:02thing in a way. The one aggro move is demand
- 42:07something of someone, which is, you know, as the name implies,
- 42:11you demand like give me, give me what I want.
- 42:15And you know, on like a 7 to 10, you know, they they they'll
- 42:19probably push back. And then the other one is for
- 42:24aggro is tackle a challenge, which is is you're trying to do
- 42:30something. I mean, I'll read it when you
- 42:33tackle a challenge trying for something that might be beyond
- 42:36you requiring strength skill or great, great care, quick
- 42:39reflexes, patients or hard work role plus aggro on A10 plus
- 42:44you're able to take it on and ask the MC what you can
- 42:47accomplish and no one could expect to do it better.
- 42:49So like basically it's a I'm trying to do something difficult
- 42:54like let's just, I'm going to go for it even if it's like even if
- 42:59it's especially difficult. This almost seems more broad
- 43:03than just a athletic check. This just seems to be the get
- 43:06something done check. It is more broad.
- 43:09I, I athletics check was the closest comparison I could make
- 43:13of it. But yeah, it is more broad than
- 43:14that, Yes. The other reason I call it the
- 43:18athletics check is because the aggro stat has a little bit more
- 43:23upfront. I'm putting energy into it, I
- 43:28almost feel. Like the tackle the challenge
- 43:30check should be the true the only completely analogous check
- 43:36type like I, I or move sorry like 1 where it's based on what
- 43:41you wanted to be rolled like a different stat.
- 43:45Oh, I feel like. That kind of like how how Defy
- 43:48Danger works in Dungeon World. Yes, exactly.
- 43:52That's an interesting idea. I did not consider that.
- 43:55Yeah, I could see that. I almost.
- 43:58I so hold on, yeah, 'cause I I'm looking at your notes now for
- 44:02the aggrostat and I almost feel like we didn't need it.
- 44:07So that was, I mean, I hold on, you know, let me pull up.
- 44:13So he somebody asked about that in the in the Reddit.
- 44:15So here, let me pull up. I'm just gonna pull these up as
- 44:18they become relevant, I guess. OK, so this person said why
- 44:22separate the stats of hard and angry?
- 44:25What distinction are you trying to make that was not present in
- 44:30previous? What distinction are you trying
- 44:32to make between the stats that was not present in the previous
- 44:34edition? And then this person actually
- 44:39also said what is your reasoning for toning down the sexually
- 44:42explicit parts of the game in the new edition?
- 44:43Removing the hot stat playbook specials?
- 44:46This is not a complaint, though I did enjoy the transgressive
- 44:48nature of the inclusion in the previous editions.
- 44:51So the response was the first decision was to do away with
- 44:59seducing or manipulating as a basic move.
- 45:01My least favorite move and my least favorite in the game by
- 45:04far is what Vincent Baker said. I I thought that was
- 45:09interesting. I don't know why he hates to do
- 45:10some manipulate so much, but I thought it was interesting.
- 45:13That decision left the Hot stat with nothing to do.
- 45:18Dropping the Hot stat left a hole in the stat list.
- 45:21I mean I could have gone down to 4 stats, but honestly we never
- 45:24really considered it. I chose aggro because of the
- 45:28triangle it makes with Cool and Hard.
- 45:30Unlike Cool and Hard, it is outward, expressive and showy.
- 45:36Cool and Hard are both kind of contained and calculating more
- 45:40when push comes to shove. Hot was the same way.
- 45:45One of the reasons we're toning down the sexuality is that we've
- 45:49made some Oh, this is another. This I thought was a quite an
- 45:52interesting answer. One of the reasons we're toning
- 45:54down the sexuality is that we've made some games since Apocalypse
- 45:58World that take on sex and romance more directly, with a
- 46:01lot more fun detail and nuance. It's hard to take the when you
- 46:05and another character have sex, you get plus one hex with each
- 46:07other as seriously when it's up against Firebrands stealing time
- 46:12together, the nightmare horses take their breath away and the
- 46:16Wolf King's sons falling in love with someone.
- 46:20Those other two games, I don't know.
- 46:21Firebrands is a game that he made that is about Mecca pilots,
- 46:25but it's about like the drama between Mecca pilots.
- 46:29It's like the drama on the ship is kind of the idea.
- 46:36Yeah, It's not so much about the mix.
- 46:39It's also kind of like a quick play game.
- 46:40It's not like a full campaign kind of game.
- 46:42It's like a play one session focused kind of thing.
- 46:45I don't know if it's finished either.
- 46:46I have it. I don't know if it's totally
- 46:48finished, if I remember correctly.
- 46:51So his argument was aggro is in there because of the triangle
- 46:56that it makes with cool and hard, where aggro is more
- 46:59expensive and showy and cool and hard are more contained and
- 47:03calculating. I, I don't know, I don't know if
- 47:10I agree with that or not. It I kind of get what he means,
- 47:19but at the same time, yeah, I don't know, the distinction
- 47:25feels a little too blurry to be worth it.
- 47:28Totally. So I mean ultimately having not,
- 47:38well, I mean, it was so I think it was that way in the hack
- 47:42also, but I don't remember or was it actually hold on, did it
- 47:47work that way there? It did, yeah.
- 47:50So that was the case in the hack too.
- 47:53I really don't remember if it, I don't remember it coming up or
- 48:00doing anything really. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 48:10Because there was confront someone in the hack version with
- 48:14which was roll plus aggro and then there was a charm or
- 48:18deceive move and that was rolling with your cool, which
- 48:21feels awkward. And I think he acknowledges that
- 48:24one. So yeah, it was only, I guess it
- 48:28was only really the one move that used the aggro, which is
- 48:31why I don't really remember it much.
- 48:33So yeah, I don't know. I don't know if it was needed or
- 48:35not, but I can definitely see the argument.
- 48:42I can definitely see the argument for.
- 48:50I can see the argument for tackle a challenge being not
- 48:54tied to any specific stat and being like you pick I can.
- 48:58That makes sense. And then in regards to like the
- 49:04the comment on the whole, like why this, the sex moves being
- 49:07gone and stuff, I do feel like that's a pretty good answer in
- 49:11terms of like it was just not, it wasn't very good.
- 49:15My one complaint there is like, yeah, but then you could have
- 49:18maybe reworked it to make it better, you know?
- 49:22Yeah, I suppose. And also you could have toned
- 49:26it. The funny thing about the sex
- 49:28moves thing is like they're like, well, we want to tone
- 49:30down. I I honestly I expected you to
- 49:33argue more about the sex image part.
- 49:35No, I mean, look, there's there. I definitely I'm frustrated that
- 49:40they're gone and that they're going to be gone forever.
- 49:42And I hope maybe we get like into something to put them back
- 49:45in for people who want that kind of play.
- 49:47A. Little mini, little mini.
- 49:48Something yeah, but I my biggest thing that I see as I'm reading
- 49:55this is that may I, I don't want to go as far as say we're losing
- 50:00the plot, but you know, if you were going to remove the hot
- 50:05stat, maybe it was OK just to go down to four.
- 50:07Like, I think a lot of people really like the Powered by the
- 50:10Apocalypse games for their simplicity and.
- 50:14Yeah, I could see four, I think 4.
- 50:15Could have worked and like we like 4 works.
- 50:19We know it works because it works fine in monster hearts,
- 50:22right? Like Monster Arts has rules
- 50:23supplementing the the use of four.
- 50:26But yeah, honestly. My I would have personally said
- 50:34turn take hot away and call it like charm or something like
- 50:38that, right. And then instead of them being
- 50:42sex moves, make them like intimate moves, compassion
- 50:46moves, companion moves, something along those lines.
- 50:50Because that's how most people, The funny thing is that's what
- 50:52most people ended up doing anyway.
- 50:54And other PBTA games call them that.
- 50:58Like the Urban Shadows calls them, I think intimacy moves,
- 51:04which is like it, it says like they don't have to be sexual,
- 51:07right. Intimacy could also just be like
- 51:10hanging out with someone and like talking to each other for a
- 51:13long time or whatever, you know? So yeah, I interesting choice.
- 51:18Yeah. I the idea of like, well, I
- 51:20didn't like how it was, so I took it out 'cause it was
- 51:22feeling kind of like outdated design.
- 51:25I understand. But then I'm like, yeah, but
- 51:28rework it more, think about it more, you know, like do
- 51:30something new with it. I don't know.
- 51:32So yeah, aggro is in there. It's tied to these two moves.
- 51:39I can't say much else without playing with it to really say
- 51:43how it feels. But yeah, continuing down the
- 51:50basic moves, we still have Act Under Fire, which is pretty much
- 51:54unchanged. It does the same thing and then
- 51:57we have a new move under cool called Reason with someone,
- 52:01which you know, when you reason with someone, say what they'll
- 52:04do and what you'll do. Roll with your cool.
- 52:08And you know, you try to like speak frankly with them, give
- 52:12them an offer. Try to be like, you know, try to
- 52:16reason, be like, you don't want to do this, bud.
- 52:18Right? That kind of vibe.
- 52:22My initial thought when I first read that was why is that tied
- 52:25to cool? But as I thought about it more,
- 52:26I was like, Oh no, I guess that does actually make sense for
- 52:28cool 'cause you're being more level headed than the person
- 52:31you're talking to probably is. And then we have our so we have
- 52:41one hard move on the basic moves list, which is just attack
- 52:44someone, which is much more straightforward than it used to
- 52:48be when it was called Seized by Force.
- 52:53So when you attack someone, you roll plus hard and on a hit, you
- 52:56know, you get to choose a bunch. Basically, you have a list of
- 52:59options on the attack someone move.
- 53:01The one difference is that there is a there is a rider on the
- 53:07attack someone where if the person can defend themselves,
- 53:11you get an extra choice that you can pick from, which is to say
- 53:16you can choose to suffer a little harm.
- 53:19This used to basically be two separate moves, so they kind of
- 53:22like smashed into one move. This is not however, the full
- 53:28combat rules because there are also battle rules and I'm pretty
- 53:36sure the battle rules are still going to be in 3rd edition.
- 53:42I don't I don't think they're getting taken out.
- 53:46So the battle rules are for when, like, it's almost kind of
- 53:50like when you roll initiative, you activate the battle moves.
- 53:53You know what I mean? Yeah, yeah.
- 53:55So there's only this one basic attack, someone move for your
- 53:58basic moves, but there's almost certainly going to be more.
- 54:04And then we have read a person read a situation and using the
- 54:07psychic maelstrom. These are basically completely
- 54:10the same as they were before, although they do have a little
- 54:14rider on the question on each of the questions now, which I
- 54:17thought was kind of interesting. Where So for like read a person,
- 54:21it says, are you telling the truth?
- 54:23And then in parentheses it says, how can I tell?
- 54:27So the player who rolled to read, they ask, you know, let's
- 54:32say the and they asked the MC, are you telling the truth?
- 54:35Which is to say, is the MPC telling me the truth?
- 54:37And then how, as I, how, how can my character tell that this MPC
- 54:41is in fact telling the truth? And they all have that little
- 54:45rider question. And then Rita situation is the
- 54:47same one like who's in control here?
- 54:49Parentheses. How can I tell I like those just
- 54:53because I was, I would already do that.
- 54:57I I would explain that bit like how you can tell part.
- 54:59I would say that anyway, but I like throwing them on there.
- 55:04It adds it, it adds it's a good reminder to be like, by the way,
- 55:08GM, like let them know. How can they tell?
- 55:12And then, yeah, the the psychic maelstrom is, I think completely
- 55:16unchanged. I mean, maybe it's reworded a
- 55:18little bit, but other than that, I think it's totally unchanged.
- 55:24Your two hex moves, your history moves are now back.
- 55:28Someone's play and interrupt someone.
- 55:30They're, they're pretty, they're a similar idea to the way
- 55:35helping and interfering previously worked.
- 55:38But now they they basically just have more nuance to them.
- 55:43They have more options, so if you back someone's play, you can
- 55:47give them a plus one. You can give them an extra
- 55:50question or an extra option. You can give them extra harm,
- 55:53extra armor, extra sigh harm, or another benefit as you agree.
- 55:59And then as if you interrupt someone, it's like the MC will
- 56:03choose whether you're in the way first.
- 56:04You're in their way, you're ready for it.
- 56:07So they're a similar concept, but they're much more nuanced
- 56:10now, which is cool because honestly, I think I think what
- 56:18I'm, what I'm personally seeing in this version of Apocalypse
- 56:21World is Vincent Baker really accepting that Apocalypse World
- 56:25is APVP game. Yeah, I mean.
- 56:29By adding this extra information, by adding the extra
- 56:33stuff to these to the back someone's play and interrupt
- 56:36someone, by making them more nuanced.
- 56:37It's like acknowledging that players are going to like fuck
- 56:40with each other or help each other, depending.
- 56:42Yeah, I mean, on one end, I like that.
- 56:46To an earlier point, I'm not 100% sure how I feel about the
- 56:49Riders. I feel like they, like I, I
- 56:52recognize that we need to have them on some things, but others
- 56:54feel kind of weird given the way the game is played.
- 56:58So like the idea that a full success at 10 plus is
- 57:02particularly difficult to get right up until you know, like
- 57:06your characters are pretty kitted out and then they can do
- 57:08kind of whatever they want in a specific nation.
- 57:10The fact that with with something like demand something
- 57:14right, they have to choose, give into your demand or push back
- 57:18hard. I almost feel like on A10 plus
- 57:20they shouldn't be able to choose.
- 57:22You know, those are not the riders.
- 57:26That's not what I meant when I said the riders.
- 57:30But when I said the riders, I was talking about the little
- 57:33parentheses questions on read a person and read a situation.
- 57:37OK, that being said, in response to that, basically that for that
- 57:46particular one, it's the what it's saying is they either have
- 57:51to give you what you want or they have to escalate the
- 57:54situation. And that's the only way they can
- 57:56resist. And if you're, if you're in like
- 57:59a negotiation of some kind and you demand something of a
- 58:03character and you get a 10 plus, their only option if they want
- 58:08to say no is to escalate, which is probably going to mean like
- 58:11physical violence or close to it.
- 58:13If they do that, then everyone else in the room is going to
- 58:17know like, oh, you know, this guy just jumped this other dude
- 58:20for no reason. Like, and now they're
- 58:22ostracized. Like I think the idea is that's
- 58:25why it says push back hard. Right.
- 58:27That that is the idea that physically, because when you
- 58:31demand, like if you think about it in real life, when you demand
- 58:33something of someone, they can always physically resist and say
- 58:38no. So it's it's leaving that door
- 58:41open if like they still can, but they have to escalate the
- 58:45situation and that's going to probably put them in a worse
- 58:49position if they choose to escalate the situation like most
- 58:52times. So it is still ultimately in
- 58:58your favor by quite a lot. Arguably.
- 59:04Actually arguably I could see a situation where the NPC pushing
- 59:07back on a 10 plus is puts the situation even more in your
- 59:13favour than it did before. Because, you know, the person
- 59:19pushing back looks like the idiot.
- 59:22I suppose. They pull, they pull, they pull.
- 59:24A faux pas, if you will. Right.
- 59:26Yeah, I suppose. But anyway, yes, so with the the
- 59:37with the history moves, I just like that.
- 59:40I like that there's more to them because it means there's going
- 59:42to be more. When you get into those like
- 59:46social PvP situations where you're arguing with each other
- 59:50or trying to get an MPC on your side versus another player's
- 59:53side, there's just going to be more going on there.
- 1:00:00They also with the interrupt someone move being a thing now
- 1:00:04being its own move, there's also now highly interruptible moves
- 1:00:09and some of the moves you'll see on like the playbooks will say
- 1:00:11highly interruptible, which is to say like you know, basically
- 1:00:14it's something that takes time. So someone could potentially
- 1:00:16jump in, which is again fun for the potential PvP nonsense.
- 1:00:28And now we have the barter moves which I mentioned before.
- 1:00:34Drop Jingle is your move to buy stuff.
- 1:00:38Basically you roll plus your barter stat.
- 1:00:42And if you get on A10 plus you can find a trading partner or
- 1:00:46people who have the thing you want on a 7 to 9.
- 1:00:50They on a 7 to 9 it says they consider you to be either rich.
- 1:00:55So on A10 plus they consider you to be both rich and powerful.
- 1:01:00On a 7 to 9 they choose either rich or powerful, the MC
- 1:01:04chooses. On a miss they consider you to
- 1:01:06be neither rich or powerful. No matter the result.
- 1:01:11Ask the MC how they treat you and what kind of deal or deals
- 1:01:15they make available to you. So basically the drop Jingle is
- 1:01:20kind of like you're making a roll to see how big of a Dick
- 1:01:23you have in the room currently in comparison to everyone else.
- 1:01:31Which again, I'm a little iffy on turning barter into a move
- 1:01:38that you roll. I I go back and forth on if I if
- 1:01:44I like that idea or not. At least for Apocalypse World,
- 1:01:46you know what I mean? I like it in other games.
- 1:01:50Yeah. I mean, I can see what you're
- 1:01:51saying around. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:53I was going to say I don't know if you have any strong opinion
- 1:01:55on. That.
- 1:01:55No, no, I'm kind of with you where it's like E.
- 1:01:59It's a maybe. Yeah, it's an interesting idea.
- 1:02:00Maybe not like in a in a game that was like super heavy on on,
- 1:02:06you know, social and political movement, I could see this being
- 1:02:08a fun thing. But here I kind of don't.
- 1:02:12Not that I don't see its place, but I don't know how necessary
- 1:02:14it is. Yeah, I mean, the way it worked
- 1:02:16before was you would spend money and essentially spending the
- 1:02:21money gave you different tiers of results.
- 1:02:23So it was a move without a role basically.
- 1:02:25And I don't know. Yeah, I feel like I liked that a
- 1:02:28little bit more, but I haven't played with it.
- 1:02:30So, you know. And then the other barter move
- 1:02:33is live day-to-day, which is just at the beginning of the
- 1:02:36session. Roll with your barter.
- 1:02:38If you get a ton plus you ask the MC what's free and easy.
- 1:02:41If you get a 7 to 9, you ask what's easy and what's hard.
- 1:02:45On the miss, you ask what's hard and what's impossible, which is
- 1:02:51to kind of say, how are things looking today more or less?
- 1:02:57Which is I feel like maybe a little tricky to manage for all
- 1:03:05four players or three players potentially doing that might be
- 1:03:11a little much to juggle. I don't know, but also you
- 1:03:18probably I'm, I wouldn't necessarily do it at the
- 1:03:20beginning of any of every session.
- 1:03:21It says at the beginning of the session, but I definitely think
- 1:03:24that if it's a, if the session stops in the middle of a day,
- 1:03:27like in the middle of some action, then the subsequent
- 1:03:29session, I'm not necessarily I, I would really do that on more
- 1:03:32of like when there's a fictional beginning of a day, you know
- 1:03:35what I mean? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:37Like when there's a break, 'cause if you're in the middle
- 1:03:39of something and then the next day rolls around and you're
- 1:03:41like, all right, roll live date today.
- 1:03:43It's like, wait, but we're, we started immediately.
- 1:03:45We're. Literally the same day.
- 1:03:47Yeah, we can't. That's weird.
- 1:03:52After that there is the second page of the basic moves preview.
- 1:03:57There's a little page called Making Moves.
- 1:04:00Basically it gives some guidance on simultaneous moves and like
- 1:04:04PvP situations and just how to handle them.
- 1:04:08So like it mentions, you know, two players want to move roll at
- 1:04:11the same time. It mentions tackling a challenge
- 1:04:15versus acting under fire and how that should work when you are
- 1:04:18attacking somebody. PC versus PC battles.
- 1:04:24Just general advice on that. Something it does mention at the
- 1:04:28top of this, which I thought was really interesting.
- 1:04:31So if you look at the very top of the making moves page as a it
- 1:04:36says it's your responsibility as a player to choose and announce
- 1:04:42the moves you are making by name, no?
- 1:04:49And I was like wait a minute, what?
- 1:04:50I thought we weren't supposed to say the name of the move was
- 1:04:52always the idea. In the AMA, someone said to
- 1:04:59Vincent Baker what is the biggest misconception about the
- 1:05:02game? And he said, oh, the idea that
- 1:05:06players aren't supposed to announce their moves.
- 1:05:08I never intended for that to be a thing.
- 1:05:12Oh. Yeah, I was like, what?
- 1:05:17So the whole idea of like, you're supposed to just say what
- 1:05:19you're doing, you know, let me see if I can find it.
- 1:05:25Biggest misconception? No, from this point I can't
- 1:05:29make. Where's your gold?
- 1:05:32No. What do you think?
- 1:05:33Oh, what do you think others really get wrong about your
- 1:05:36game? There's one core point about
- 1:05:38moves that we're highlighting A misconception that we really
- 1:05:41want to correct. In Apocalypse World, as a
- 1:05:43player, you choose your moves intentionally and announce them
- 1:05:46by name. You don't just say what your
- 1:05:48character does and leave it for the GM to choose your moves.
- 1:05:54Which I was like, wow, that's kind of a big up end of how most
- 1:05:58people have been doing it for most of the time.
- 1:06:00Yeah, that's a little that that, that feels like a departure.
- 1:06:03But I guess if that's how wait. So how did that come about?
- 1:06:07Where did that idea come from? Basically, I think what happened
- 1:06:11was there, the misunderstanding came from the MC section of the
- 1:06:15game because the MC section says to the MC never speak your
- 1:06:20moves. And the reason is because on the
- 1:06:24MC side of things, you don't need to speak your moves.
- 1:06:27You don't need to explain what you're doing, right.
- 1:06:29You can just, you just make decisions in reaction to the
- 1:06:32players and you don't need to roll any dice or anything.
- 1:06:35You're just making decisions. So you don't need to say what
- 1:06:39you're doing, but the players need to declare what they're
- 1:06:41trying to do because they're trying to get, you know, they're
- 1:06:45trying to beat whatever challenges in front of them.
- 1:06:48So they need to be clear on what they're using to beat the
- 1:06:50challenge that the. MC isn't.
- 1:06:51Supposed to speak the move so everyone thought that also
- 1:06:55applied to the players. Apparently it never did, yeah.
- 1:07:02So to recap the. Idea is that.
- 1:07:05The MCU should never ask a player what specific move
- 1:07:09they're trying. But if the players should say it
- 1:07:11back, no. The idea is that the player
- 1:07:14says. I'm sticking my gun in in.
- 1:07:19I'm sticking my gun in Jim's face and I'm demanding that he
- 1:07:23give me the money he owes me. I'm using demand something.
- 1:07:27That's how it's supposed to work.
- 1:07:29I want to use the move demand something and then the MCA says
- 1:07:33OK roll it. Right now.
- 1:07:36You could obviously there could be a back and forth.
- 1:07:38The MC might be like, well, I don't know if you're making that
- 1:07:40move, Maybe it's more like this move or whatever.
- 1:07:42But the idea is like the the player is supposed to be like
- 1:07:45I'm doing this thing, this is what I want and apparently
- 1:07:52everyone missed that. Myself included by the.
- 1:07:55Way I also had that misconception, so yeah.
- 1:08:01You do, in fact. Announce your moves, which I
- 1:08:08don't know, doesn't sound. Like that big of a deal, but it
- 1:08:10does recontextualize. A lot of like situations when
- 1:08:13you're running the game. So it's kind of like, wow,
- 1:08:14that's a that's kind of a interesting change.
- 1:08:17Yeah, sure. I will keep that in mind for the
- 1:08:20future. So yeah, the anyway the rest of
- 1:08:27that. Making the moves section is
- 1:08:29mostly. Like it's just a little bit of
- 1:08:30advice and then it briefly mentions XP an improvement.
- 1:08:36So XP has been changed so you do not highlight a stat.
- 1:08:43Instead every time you roll on a stat you mark it off.
- 1:08:47So like oh I rolled aggro and you mark like a check on your
- 1:08:49aggro. Once you have 4 marks on a stat,
- 1:08:53you erase those four and give yourself one XP.
- 1:08:56So you have to roll on a stat 4 times to then accrue one point
- 1:08:59of XP. There are.
- 1:09:03Also now. End of session questions that
- 1:09:07you ask that also a word XP. Which I like the end of session.
- 1:09:14Questions I don't like the new rolling stat thing to be honest.
- 1:09:19I much prefer highlighting A stat I I've always really liked
- 1:09:23that mechanic. So can you can you don't re
- 1:09:26explain how the new rolling stat thing works I'm.
- 1:09:27Trying to to get it ahead. So like you, you just have to
- 1:09:31roll a stat 4 times and then. The 4th roll converts to one
- 1:09:35point of XP, but it has to be the same stat.
- 1:09:39Or do you just have to roll 4? Times.
- 1:09:42No, no, you roll. You have to.
- 1:09:43Roll so during. As you're playing, there's
- 1:09:46little if you look at the character sheet, if you look at
- 1:09:49blend of the playbooks, there's a little XP track next to each
- 1:09:52stat, and then there's four bubbles.
- 1:09:55You have to fill up those four bubbles.
- 1:09:57And then once you do, you. Erase them and then that
- 1:10:00converts is to 1 into one XP point got.
- 1:10:03It and the way it. Used to work was if you.
- 1:10:08Was the player with the highest history with you.
- 1:10:11Would pick one of your stats to be your highlighted stat, and
- 1:10:14then the GM would pick a stat to be your highlighted stat, and
- 1:10:17every time you rolled one of your two highlighted stats, you
- 1:10:20got a point of XP. What I liked about that is it
- 1:10:27lets the player. One of the players and the GM
- 1:10:31nudge your character in a direction that they think is
- 1:10:34interesting, right? So I'm going to highlight your
- 1:10:37hard because I want to see you pick more fights with people,
- 1:10:40right? So I'm giving you a carrot to
- 1:10:42encourage you. I'm not saying you have to do
- 1:10:44it, but I'm encouraging you heavily so.
- 1:10:49Yeah, I, I don't. Love, I don't love that that's
- 1:10:52gone. I I feel like stat highlighting
- 1:10:54was a really cool idea and I don't know why he took that out.
- 1:11:01But yeah, I'm not sure. I don't know that was a that
- 1:11:06was. An odd choice to me.
- 1:11:07Yeah, I mean. I I guess the idea is they
- 1:11:10maybe? Wanted to slow down progression
- 1:11:12a little bit. So actually I, I think I wanted
- 1:11:14to bring this up. I I remember writing this
- 1:11:17somewhere. I don't know if I put it in a.
- 1:11:18Note section but. It seems like the game is trying
- 1:11:23to slow down and I think I originally.
- 1:11:28Wrote this down because it I I. I guess I'm wrong on this
- 1:11:31because the amount of improvements are the exact same.
- 1:11:33I don't know why I thought they were less in two in second
- 1:11:35edition, but maybe the idea is. That Mister Baker here.
- 1:11:41Is trying to appeal to a middle ground audience between the like
- 1:11:4610 to 30 session range where you have enough time to maybe really
- 1:11:51flesh a character out if that's what you really want, but you
- 1:11:53don't necessarily need to. You're they're just giving you
- 1:11:55that option for games that might go on a little longer.
- 1:11:58They are, are they the same amount of improvements?
- 1:12:00Yes, it's really hard to. Tell 23456789. 10 with 12345
- 1:12:09make sure to compare the same playbook.
- 1:12:10Yes, well, sorry the Skinner doesn't have let me check the.
- 1:12:14Brain Luminous The. Luminous is the Skinner
- 1:12:17equivalent 16 and the new one. Has. 12345678910 17 They have
- 1:12:30one more now, OK. Interesting, I mean.
- 1:12:37The. You're not entirely.
- 1:12:42Wrong though necessarily either. Because in one of the responses
- 1:12:48to one of the AMA questions, Vincent Baker kind of joked
- 1:12:53where he was like, well, I've always said that Apocalypse
- 1:12:56World stops it at stops at Tier 2 or whatever, or, or what, how
- 1:13:02do you phrase it? He was like, I've always said
- 1:13:03the game stops at Level 3 or something like that.
- 1:13:05And he was like, I feel like third edition is going to let
- 1:13:08you go up to level 5 or something.
- 1:13:10I forget exactly I phrase it. But he basically said, like,
- 1:13:12yeah, this, this version of the game is going to be able to
- 1:13:16extend its life a little bit more.
- 1:13:19So not only will there be a higher level cap.
- 1:13:21There will be a higher. Area or two level which means
- 1:13:24you're going to have to put more sessions in and more play in to
- 1:13:27reach those levels as well. OK, so I found it I.
- 1:13:31Also really like the new advanced moves.
- 1:13:35Sometimes I'll quit that. Apocalypse World is for a game
- 1:13:38of characters level 1 to 3. The new advanced moves let you
- 1:13:41play at level 4 before you retire.
- 1:13:45So you're. Onto something maybe?
- 1:13:49That being said, we haven't seen the new advanced moves so we
- 1:13:52don't know what that looks like, but you might be on some.
- 1:13:58Or or you. It sounds like yes, you are.
- 1:14:00You're picking up what he's putting.
- 1:14:02Down to some capacity, I don't know if it's exactly, I don't
- 1:14:05know if the way you're thinking about it and the way he's
- 1:14:06talking about it are necessarily the same, but it sounds like
- 1:14:08you're picking up on something there.
- 1:14:10They seem to be. They must be or not must be, but
- 1:14:12they appear to be similar at. At first glance, because that's
- 1:14:14the only reason why I would think about why it would take
- 1:14:17you that much more to level up. Right?
- 1:14:214 rolls. Leveling is it feels unlikely
- 1:14:24that you will roll cool four times in one session.
- 1:14:28You might. You absolutely might.
- 1:14:30Probably not. Yeah, but you probably won't
- 1:14:32just based on what we've done in Dungeon World and how we did it
- 1:14:35in Monster Hearts. You roll, lash out physically,
- 1:14:41maybe once. Every other session.
- 1:14:44You all yeah, I mean, if you rolled it.
- 1:14:47Two or three times. In a session, yeah, that'd be
- 1:14:48like, that's quite a bit. Some shit is happening.
- 1:14:50Yeah, yeah, Shit's going down. Yeah.
- 1:14:57I I. Mean, yeah, I guess from that
- 1:14:58standpoint, maybe you're on to something.
- 1:15:00Like the idea of just trying to slow the progression just a
- 1:15:04little bit. There is also the.
- 1:15:08End of session moves. Though which weren't there
- 1:15:11before. So that will then speed it back
- 1:15:14up. So like, I don't know, they took
- 1:15:17away one element that was quick. But then added a.
- 1:15:20Different element in that's decently quick.
- 1:15:22So like I don't know exactly where it's going to fit.
- 1:15:24Also you do need you used to need five points of XP to
- 1:15:28improve, now you need 6. So they did also add another
- 1:15:31point of XP required so I don't know where it.
- 1:15:37Levels out necessarily. But it does seem like it is
- 1:15:40slower, which I mean, I guess I'm probably OK with, yeah, I
- 1:15:52mean, I the way he phrased that. The response to where he's like
- 1:15:57I. Often said Apocalypse World is
- 1:15:58level 1 to 3. The new advanced moves let you
- 1:16:00play at level 4. He's kind of like there's more,
- 1:16:04but there's not that much more, right?
- 1:16:06Like it's not like it's not like you can go to level 10 now.
- 1:16:10So I'm probably fine with that. But that's all.
- 1:16:21Speculation. We we can't say for sure.
- 1:16:27I don't know, because I know you.
- 1:16:28I see you. Got a couple of questions down
- 1:16:30here. Did you notice he had a pretty
- 1:16:32interesting response to niche protection?
- 1:16:35Did you see that? I don't remember.
- 1:16:40Maybe do you have the? Link to it.
- 1:16:42So I don't have the link to it, but I I actually copied it down.
- 1:16:46OK, the question is I saw a. Comment that I think you wrote
- 1:16:50saying you never intended to make it a rule for playbooks to
- 1:16:53be only used once per character, that instead it was to limit
- 1:16:56printing by GM. Do you still agree with that
- 1:16:59sentiment? How do you feel this impacts
- 1:17:01your slash other games? His answer was back in 2010,
- 1:17:05Apocalypse World's approach was to balance between the PCs and
- 1:17:09niche protection. What the Yeah, the approach to
- 1:17:14balance it was out of step with conventional wisdom.
- 1:17:17People took the rule that there's only one of each
- 1:17:18playbook to be for niche protection purposes, which meant
- 1:17:21they that they brought some of those ideas into the game.
- 1:17:25Pointing out that no, that rule exists for the benefit of the
- 1:17:28GMs port inkjet printer maybe seemed to disarm some of those
- 1:17:32ideas. These days I think that
- 1:17:34conventional wisdom about PC on PC balance and news protection
- 1:17:37has moved on, at least to some extent.
- 1:17:40I've always thought about setting up to play Apocalypse
- 1:17:42World. Like let's the let's everyone
- 1:17:45play hard holders, neighbors. Work together for instance.
- 1:17:47I don't know that anyone's ever tried it.
- 1:17:49So he's basically, he's saying that he's not against the idea
- 1:17:53that everyone is playing a hard holder or a gun lugger, but he's
- 1:17:56not sure that anyone's ever tried that.
- 1:17:58But he's never been against it. Or maybe he's not against it
- 1:18:00now. No, no, he's oh sorry, he's at
- 1:18:03all. So he's never been against.
- 1:18:04It yeah, he's. Never been against it, but maybe
- 1:18:07some strange wording misconstrued as to why he
- 1:18:12initially said One person per playbook, yeah.
- 1:18:19I don't. I mean, that's.
- 1:18:22Certainly. Interesting if for no.
- 1:18:24Other reason than the fact that a lot of people took that
- 1:18:27assumption about 1/1 one playbook per character and then
- 1:18:33extended it out into many, many other PBTA games and is still a
- 1:18:37common part of many PBTA games. Yeah.
- 1:18:40Fucking Dungeon World. Yeah.
- 1:18:41One person per race. One person per class, yeah.
- 1:18:44Yeah, well, not race, but class yes, or playbook, yes.
- 1:18:49Are you sure? I pretty I thought it was both.
- 1:18:51It was. It was.
- 1:18:52Just playbook because the the. Your race options are on the
- 1:18:57playbook. Oh, right, right.
- 1:18:59Yeah. If you're this thing, you can
- 1:19:00only be this or this. Right, right, right, right,
- 1:19:02right. You can be this or the, yeah.
- 1:19:05Dungeon World's one example, but I've seen others that basically
- 1:19:09say more or less the same thing. And yeah, I mean, it is kind of
- 1:19:15funny that a misunderstanding basically became a like a common
- 1:19:23practice. Certainly interesting I.
- 1:19:27Mean I, I mean I, I see what he's saying.
- 1:19:29Though too, there is definitely potential of everyone's playing
- 1:19:32this playbook. This might be kind of fun, you
- 1:19:33know? No for sure.
- 1:19:35I I kind of like the idea that like.
- 1:19:38You know, everyone's the base and we're all neighbor.
- 1:19:39Everyone has a base and we're all neighbors, yeah.
- 1:19:41Yeah. Like the idea that everybody is
- 1:19:43a volatile, we're all like. We're literally gun runners.
- 1:19:46That's kind of our whole thing. And you know, you might be like,
- 1:19:49oh, well, that limits you heavily.
- 1:19:51It's like it does. But that can that can be fun if
- 1:19:54you're like, let's say you're doing like a like a three or
- 1:19:56four shot like mini campaign. And the idea is that your
- 1:19:59armored convoy got knocked off by another gang and now you have
- 1:20:02to go into town and no one is good at bartering.
- 1:20:04Like, yeah, you can lead. It leads to some interesting.
- 1:20:08Situations, to say the least. Yeah, it is.
- 1:20:12It is funny that people. Misunderstood.
- 1:20:18I don't remember how it was. Worded all the way back in the
- 1:20:211st edition of the. Game.
- 1:20:22So like, I don't remember, I couldn't necessarily take a
- 1:20:26guess as to why people misunderstood, but evidently
- 1:20:29people did. Evidently there were a lot of
- 1:20:32misunderstood. Assumptions that people have
- 1:20:34made. About the Paco's world that have
- 1:20:36now continued on for a long time.
- 1:20:40That must really bother him. I'd bother.
- 1:20:43The shit out of me. I don't know if it bothers him.
- 1:20:46That's a good point, I have no idea.
- 1:20:52Anyway, sort of moving so we the the making.
- 1:20:56Moves and the XP and improvement we.
- 1:20:58Just mentioned the last page of the basic of the like moves
- 1:21:03handout. The Kickstarter preview has the
- 1:21:05what are called standard moves. I'm really not, I'm, I don't
- 1:21:10feel like it's worth going into these because they are tied to
- 1:21:14very specific things that you get on a playbook by playbook
- 1:21:17basis and you're not going to care about them unless your
- 1:21:21playbook interacts with them. So like for example, there's the
- 1:21:25standard mood augury, which is a move you get like if you're a
- 1:21:31brainer. Or you're a hocus you're.
- 1:21:32Probably going to get augury at some point and it lets you like
- 1:21:35manipulate the psychic maelstrom, but if you're a
- 1:21:39volatile, you don't give a shit about augury.
- 1:21:41And then there's like the move behind the wheel, which only
- 1:21:44matters if you have a vehicle. And then there's like devotion,
- 1:21:47which only matters if you have a group of followers.
- 1:21:49So they're all, they are all bespoke rules for very specific
- 1:21:54situations that only matter sometimes.
- 1:21:56That being said, on a very broad level, they seem to work
- 1:22:00basically the same. When I was looking at them, they
- 1:22:02seem to all work pretty much the same as second edition, just
- 1:22:06with a little extra like a little more wording, a little
- 1:22:09more clarification, a little more like nuance to them, but
- 1:22:11other than that they seem to work the same, so nothing crazy
- 1:22:16there. Although I don't I don't think
- 1:22:22they. Were called.
- 1:22:25I don't think they were called standard moves.
- 1:22:26Before I would think. They had a different name, but
- 1:22:29yeah, so then. The Playbooks.
- 1:22:35We are not going to go over every playbook because there's a
- 1:22:38lot of them and it's a lot and also a lot of them are not.
- 1:22:43The differences are very minutiae, right?
- 1:22:46Like the brain picker, for example, is mostly the same.
- 1:22:52And then there's little tidbits in the playbook here and there
- 1:22:55of like, oh, this is worded a little differently.
- 1:22:57This works with this or like the fact that the brain picker now
- 1:23:00has the size stat. So now they have a move that
- 1:23:02relates to the size stat, right? Like most of them are like
- 1:23:07noodles and adjustments. So instead I'm just going to
- 1:23:11focus on the interesting bits and the ones that are new and
- 1:23:15kind of look at it broad strokes.
- 1:23:17So we have two totally. Brand new.
- 1:23:20Playbooks The Stand Out and the Restless.
- 1:23:25The Restless. I did you look at this one.
- 1:23:29I did not. It is.
- 1:23:32I It is so fucking sick. OK, so the.
- 1:23:34Restless is one of those ideas that I didn't know I wanted
- 1:23:37until I saw it. It is basically a post.
- 1:23:41Apocalypse Ranger. With an animal companion that
- 1:23:45works similar to the Dungeon World animal companion.
- 1:23:50So you're a guy with a dog, which is, you know, your Fallout
- 1:23:55guy. You're a guy with a dog, right?
- 1:23:57And you get to like make some decisions about your dog and
- 1:23:59whatnot. And when you when you make
- 1:24:01moves, the dog helps you with the different kinds of moves in
- 1:24:05different, various ways. The thing that's really sick
- 1:24:09though, about the Ranger? Or about the.
- 1:24:11The restless is that the move the genius design comes from
- 1:24:17Naturalist and Wanderer. Effectively, what these two
- 1:24:22abilities? Let you do.
- 1:24:25Is Naturalist let you declare creatures that exist in the
- 1:24:31world like this? I'm going to declare this
- 1:24:35monster exists, and then you're going to design it from the
- 1:24:38creature sheet, which is like a thing that the MC will hand you.
- 1:24:42That creature now exists, period, and you, as the Restless
- 1:24:45know about it. Your character can interact with
- 1:24:47it. It's a thing, and then the
- 1:24:50Wanderer lets. You do essentially the same.
- 1:24:53Thing, but instead of creatures lets you declare locations that
- 1:24:56are called inhospitables and you know about inhospitable places.
- 1:25:02And so you declare whenever there's like that.
- 1:25:04You do it when it the the way the game phrases it, when
- 1:25:06there's a break in play, you're like, I'm going to declare this
- 1:25:11inhospitable location. I know XY and Z thing about it
- 1:25:14and here's what I can get out of it.
- 1:25:16So basically you're a Ranger but rather than saying Oh my
- 1:25:21favorite terrain is XY or Z. You as the.
- 1:25:24Player create the monsters and the locations when they become
- 1:25:29relevant and then inject them into the game and now they
- 1:25:31exist. OK, that kind of sucks.
- 1:25:33I kind of love that. It's fucking sick dude.
- 1:25:35I would. Have never I was like that is.
- 1:25:37Kind of genius, actually. Yeah.
- 1:25:43Love it. Love it.
- 1:25:44And biggest, biggest Sabranicus. Yeah.
- 1:25:50So basically. The Restless.
- 1:25:54Playbook lets you. Be cool Monster Hunter guy in
- 1:25:59post apocalypse situation and you get to make the monsters
- 1:26:03that you fight and know about and are like this is my cool
- 1:26:07thing. See, I would love this because
- 1:26:09that this is this is my shit and.
- 1:26:11We play games. I'm this guy who's like, what if
- 1:26:14I had came up with this like, no, I would play this.
- 1:26:17This is the one I want. Yeah, it's a good.
- 1:26:18And if you look at the if you look at the creating creatures.
- 1:26:21Page it's pretty it's pretty juicy.
- 1:26:24It's not like one or two sentences.
- 1:26:27Oh fuck yeah. Yeah, there's quite a lot there.
- 1:26:30So super sick. And then the whole creating your
- 1:26:34own inhospitable zones. It's like you're, you're you're.
- 1:26:41Creating your own favorite terrain.
- 1:26:46And then of course. You and then you also have a
- 1:26:47move called monster. Fighter, which is that you can
- 1:26:52fight enemies that are physically larger than you, and
- 1:26:54when you attack or do battle with a larger enemy, you're not
- 1:26:57outsized no matter how big they are.
- 1:26:59Which I don't know exactly what mechanical effect outsized is
- 1:27:02going to necessarily have, but based on that it's going to
- 1:27:06matter when you do battle with things.
- 1:27:08So you get to be Fallout. MC.
- 1:27:13Plus Geralt, which is like, yeah, it's pretty fired.
- 1:27:18No, yeah, I'm in. And then the other brand new
- 1:27:24playbook is the stand out. What?
- 1:27:30What is the you? Don't eat meat, but you.
- 1:27:32Stuck toast for. Breakfast.
- 1:27:33I'm in. Sorry.
- 1:27:38Fair enough. The other one is the stand out,
- 1:27:44and the stand out is this isn't exactly a new idea in the TTRPG
- 1:27:51space. In fact it's a really old idea.
- 1:27:54I just never thought about it in the context of Apocalypse World
- 1:27:57personally. And basically the stand out is a
- 1:28:01hireling playbook. That A.
- 1:28:03Player uses to play someone like a gang member or an NPC friend
- 1:28:08or like a temporary character. So it's like, oh, Jim and Bob
- 1:28:15are going on a quest and they're bringing along MPC Timmy and one
- 1:28:19of the other players character isn't going to be there.
- 1:28:21So the other player plays MPC Timmy instead and they use the
- 1:28:25stand out playbook as the way to play them.
- 1:28:30And again. It's, you know, it's like the
- 1:28:32the sidekick rules in. DND is kind of a similar idea
- 1:28:36and yeah I just never I would not have thought of.
- 1:28:42This. For Apocalypse.
- 1:28:44World but now that I've seen it, it definitely started giving me
- 1:28:47ideas. So mission accomplished.
- 1:28:51I would say I don't know are you does it does.
- 1:28:55That the thought of that intrigue you at all?
- 1:28:57It does, and I like I I think mainly for.
- 1:29:01The you can play more than one character thing now you could.
- 1:29:04This just feels like a more effective and efficient way of
- 1:29:09doing that where your main guy gets the the you know?
- 1:29:13The the care that you want. To give them because like, no
- 1:29:15matter what, if you're playing more than one character, it's
- 1:29:18going to get a little weird. Well, it can also kind of play
- 1:29:22your homies. Kind of love.
- 1:29:25Yeah, well, it can also be. It can also be that like your.
- 1:29:35Character died and you want to transition into a new character,
- 1:29:39but it's at a weird point so you're like, I don't know how to
- 1:29:41do it. It's like, OK, well, if you play
- 1:29:43a standout for a little while and then either you get rid of
- 1:29:46the standout later or you decide to upgrade the standout
- 1:29:49character into a full playbook character and then that's your
- 1:29:52new character, right? Like that's one of the really
- 1:29:55interesting uses that. I thought about for it I.
- 1:29:58Hadn't thought about it like that, actually, yeah.
- 1:30:01I feel like that has a lot of potential.
- 1:30:03That actually kind of happened in the game that I was playing
- 1:30:05when I was playing burned Over, where a character died or
- 1:30:08disappeared, and so the other player played an NPC and turned
- 1:30:13them into a full playbook at one point and then eventually got
- 1:30:17rid of them. Later or like.
- 1:30:20Side not got rid of them but they became like back to an MPC
- 1:30:23character. So yeah, it very would not have
- 1:30:30thought about it, but a cool idea.
- 1:30:35Couple other things I noted with.
- 1:30:36Some of the playbooks actually, one thing I noted just looking
- 1:30:42literally just right now, if you look at the improvement box and
- 1:30:48you look at the improvements below the line, So one is change
- 1:30:53your playbook, right? That's old.
- 1:30:54Another one is +1. Nanny stat, Yeah, OK, Unlock
- 1:30:57advanced moves, which is a thing that first and 2nd edition had.
- 1:31:02They had advanced moves unlock a game changer.
- 1:31:06What does that mean? Yeah, I, I, yeah.
- 1:31:12I don't know. And I I I.
- 1:31:14Don't. That's not true.
- 1:31:17I'm a filthy liar. I kind of know OK in.
- 1:31:22That there were. In the burned over hack.
- 1:31:27There were game changers that basically.
- 1:31:29Upended they like. Literally changed what was
- 1:31:36currently going. On OH.
- 1:31:41Yeah, so like 1 of. Them for example was you
- 1:31:43unlocked this thing called the lost swords and it just added
- 1:31:47mech suits to the setting oh fuck yes dude and then there's.
- 1:31:52Another one. Called.
- 1:31:53Epilogues which literally. Ended the game.
- 1:31:58It's called Epilogues. End the.
- 1:32:00Game period. Go around and ask everyone what
- 1:32:03happened to their characters thereafter.
- 1:32:05Take your time, say goodbye, good luck and godspeed.
- 1:32:12So yeah. So I actually I, I, I said I.
- 1:32:16Forgot I I literally forgot. That these were a thing until
- 1:32:19just now. So yeah, he's bringing.
- 1:32:24Those over. So that should certainly be
- 1:32:28interesting. I mean, don't know what those
- 1:32:31are going to look like. Another game changing the vault
- 1:32:35hunter. If not, you can get.
- 1:32:37Your cool power armor? True.
- 1:32:40Another game changer is the force door.
- 1:32:42The characters open a doorway to another dimension, another
- 1:32:45world, another timeline, another game and push through it.
- 1:32:48You can keep playing these characters and these.
- 1:32:50Yeah, you can keep playing these characters and these rules in
- 1:32:53the new world. Or else you could switch to
- 1:32:55different characters and different rules, if that makes
- 1:32:57more sense. That is so fucking funny.
- 1:33:00Yeah. Can you imagine porting?
- 1:33:03Your characters over to. Fucking dungeon.
- 1:33:06Worlds, right? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:33:07Just playing a whole new system. It's just fucking Isakai
- 1:33:09characters. Like what the fuck are we doing
- 1:33:11here? Yeah.
- 1:33:16So that that'll certainly be interesting I think.
- 1:33:20And then also the very last bullet is get with the MC for a
- 1:33:24custom improvement. I don't even.
- 1:33:28I hope there's some guidance in the main book on how.
- 1:33:30To handle that cause. Like, I don't know what that's
- 1:33:34going to look like. Anyways, some more general
- 1:33:39playbook stuff. The hairier got reworked.
- 1:33:44So the Harrier. Used to be the chopper and the
- 1:33:47chopper always kind of felt like the playbook with, I don't know,
- 1:33:51arguably the least love like it was it felt the most simple, but
- 1:33:55not in a way that was amazing necessarily.
- 1:33:59You basically the whole thing with the chopper was just you
- 1:34:01had a a biker gang. So now the Harrier is you still
- 1:34:05have a gang, but there's just there's a little more meat on
- 1:34:07the bones. There's a little more to it.
- 1:34:08First of all, you don't have to necessarily be a biker gang.
- 1:34:12You could have like 4 Wheelers. You also detail some more like
- 1:34:21not stats per SE but you detail more information about your gang
- 1:34:24and like you detail important MPCS in your gang and stuff.
- 1:34:28So there's just like more meat on the bones for the Harrier
- 1:34:31than there originally was for the for the chopper.
- 1:34:39I don't know. I couldn't think of.
- 1:34:40The word chopper for a second there, that's.
- 1:34:41Not a hard work. So I was, I was happy about.
- 1:34:45That then we. Have the other one I noticed was
- 1:34:48the operator. Is kind of.
- 1:34:50Interesting. So the operator in 3rd edition
- 1:34:52seems to be kind of a weird amalgamation of the old driver
- 1:34:57and the old version of the operator where the operator has
- 1:35:02these ports of call which act kind of similar to what the old
- 1:35:07operator's moonlighting move was.
- 1:35:10Well, also, well on top of all that, the the barter mechanics
- 1:35:18from second edition are removed from 3rd edition, which the
- 1:35:22reason that's relevant is because basically what happened
- 1:35:24with the operator was the operator existed in first
- 1:35:26edition and their whole thing was their main shtick was
- 1:35:30moonlighting, which is where they could like go around and do
- 1:35:32jobs for people and get money right?
- 1:35:34Yeah, in second edition, the he. Gave.
- 1:35:39Everyone these these barter options on their on the
- 1:35:45playbooks and those barter options kind of did what the
- 1:35:51operator was already doing. So the operator got axed.
- 1:35:58So now in 3rd edition, the operator.
- 1:36:00Is back but. It's reworked and also kind of
- 1:36:03combined with the driver. And part of the reason that it's
- 1:36:07back is because the idea that everyone had barter, bartering
- 1:36:12gigs that they could do are gone because barter got reworked.
- 1:36:16So I thought it was interesting that he got rid of it, changed
- 1:36:22it, came back around to it. Like you always love to see that
- 1:36:26where like you're. Like, oh, it sucks that this
- 1:36:28thing is gone. You're like.
- 1:36:29Oh, there it is. Nice.
- 1:36:31Yeah. I mean, I personally wasn't like
- 1:36:33all beat up. About the operator being gone,
- 1:36:35but I think it's interesting to to revisit it and I think it's
- 1:36:41interesting that it got combined with the driver because that
- 1:36:46does make a lot of sense that the driver would also be the guy
- 1:36:49who drives around and knows everybody and knows places that
- 1:36:52have useful stuff, right? Like that makes sense.
- 1:36:54I also feel like like, you know, this might be a little bit of.
- 1:36:59Like cutting down. Great because of the the
- 1:37:01Harrier's whole thing is has. Vehicle goes around doing shit.
- 1:37:05Kind of weird to have two of those guys feel well, they had a
- 1:37:08similar. The Harrier's whole thing is I
- 1:37:10have a gang. With vehicles, the operator is I
- 1:37:14have a really sick car or vehicle of some kind.
- 1:37:19Like the operator is Mad Max, the Harrier is Chris Hemsworth
- 1:37:24character Dementus Dementus. Yes, the Harrier is.
- 1:37:28Dementus, the operator. Is Mad Max.
- 1:37:31That's the distinction on that one.
- 1:37:33That being said, if there was an operator and a driver, yes, then
- 1:37:37then I would say yeah, you're starting to get into the messy.
- 1:37:40Confusion A. Little bit 'cause Mad Max is
- 1:37:41kind of an operator in that sense, right?
- 1:37:43Like that does make sense, yeah. So, yeah.
- 1:37:51And then we, we talked about this four or or no, actually
- 1:37:55this was pre recording. Pre recording.
- 1:37:58We mentioned the playbooks in general have all gotten a little
- 1:38:02more complex, a little more complicated.
- 1:38:05There's more stuff going on. I would say in my opinion, we
- 1:38:11are bordering on the edge of two complex right on the edge.
- 1:38:16Like if you go a little bit further, it might be too much.
- 1:38:19I think we're OK right now. I don't know if I don't know if
- 1:38:23you agree with that or not, but I so I'm taking a little bit
- 1:38:27more of an. Extreme take than you are.
- 1:38:28I think we are. We are.
- 1:38:31I think we've hit it. We've hit the line.
- 1:38:34The line. Anything more than this and it's
- 1:38:37super because again, like I don't feel like A and I know
- 1:38:40what's on the back and I know it's a checklist, but I didn't
- 1:38:43feel like effects and hard zones need to be there at all.
- 1:38:46Like I would prefer you know on starts says this where there is
- 1:38:52a separate check off. Sheet.
- 1:38:55That you have right? Like it's the IT sounds like
- 1:38:57you're more just complaining about.
- 1:38:59Sheet density, though, it's that, but it's it's it's it.
- 1:39:05Is a fragment that it's indicative of a greater whole.
- 1:39:08We're getting more complex and you're seeing it in the most
- 1:39:12visible way on the character sheets.
- 1:39:13You know what I mean, I guess. I, I I'm more.
- 1:39:20Saying there's a bit more mechanic.
- 1:39:24There's, there's arguably we're on.
- 1:39:26The edge of a little too much mechanically noodle noodliness
- 1:39:29for some of the playbooks is what I'm saying.
- 1:39:32Perfect example is you. You pointed it out yourself on
- 1:39:34your. Notes Why is there an ammo
- 1:39:36tracker that feels kind of weirdly out of place here?
- 1:39:40And that's that's. A piece of the character sheet,
- 1:39:42right? Like so yeah, I don't know what.
- 1:39:46That's going to look like. I don't know what that's going
- 1:39:48to be. Every playbook now has their own
- 1:39:51custom weapons and the OR every playbook has their own custom
- 1:39:58like gear list and some of the gear.
- 1:40:00The gear that has the ammo tag has little circles you can fill
- 1:40:06in which would imply an ammo count.
- 1:40:08Now. Apocalypse Roiled in the
- 1:40:09previous two editions just disregarded ammo as a mechanic.
- 1:40:13It was like don't worry about it.
- 1:40:14The only time ammo is relevant is if a player is like.
- 1:40:18If a basically, if a player fails a role, one of the hard
- 1:40:22moves you could do would be like, oh, you're out of ammo, so
- 1:40:24you can't use that gun until you like find a place to get ammo or
- 1:40:28scavenge Rammo or something like that.
- 1:40:29That's kind of the idea of how ammo was treated.
- 1:40:31It would be like a situational thing that the GM could use
- 1:40:34against you if things were going poorly for you.
- 1:40:37Now there's this ammo counter, but we don't know how it works
- 1:40:40yet because there's no we don't have the rules rules, so it
- 1:40:46might not be a huge deal if it. Works like dungeon.
- 1:40:49World ammo then I'm not too bothered, but if it's if it's
- 1:40:54more noodling than that, I'm going to be a little annoyed.
- 1:40:57So do you know what was the game that I think handled ammo really
- 1:40:59well? Wrath and Glory, the 40K system.
- 1:41:04I have no idea how that. Game does it pretty much every
- 1:41:06time you roll. To shoot, you roll.
- 1:41:09A die because the idea is that you're not like a perfect shot,
- 1:41:12right? You're kind of there's a little
- 1:41:13bit of spray and pray involved and every time that you
- 1:41:16succeeded to maintain ammo, you got a little tick up that made
- 1:41:19it harder for the next role. So eventually you were going to
- 1:41:22run out of ammo no more what and if you were really unlucky.
- 1:41:25The idea is that like a person is, you know, you dive and dodge
- 1:41:29it and. You're spraying.
- 1:41:30Trying to get them in the venue, you know you get the click,
- 1:41:32click, click. I mean that is that has an
- 1:41:35element. Of similarity to dungeon.
- 1:41:37World where basically when you would do the volley move, if you
- 1:41:41got a 7 to 9, one of the options you could choose was make the
- 1:41:46shot but dock your ammo by 1 and then you could go and refill
- 1:41:51your ammo when you got to A. Place that you could
- 1:41:53potentially. Buy ammo.
- 1:41:54So yeah, it's kind of a similar idea of like, yeah, keep rolling
- 1:41:57to see what happens and then if it goes poorly, you dock the
- 1:41:59ammo. If it's something like that,
- 1:42:02then I won't be, like I said, I won't be too bothered either
- 1:42:06either Dungeon World or the example you just gave, like,
- 1:42:08yeah, I'm kind of OK with either of those.
- 1:42:11I just don't want to track the minutiae of shots or something
- 1:42:14like that. Like that feels weird.
- 1:42:19But how much you there, we'll see, we'll see.
- 1:42:22We don't know. But yes, there is a couple
- 1:42:26elements on the character sheet that go maybe we're getting just
- 1:42:29a smidge, A smidge too complex, too complex.
- 1:42:32And the only reason I really say that is just because in terms of
- 1:42:36game style, I don't feel like Apocalypse World is going to
- 1:42:41benefit from being super like more noodly.
- 1:42:45I don't think is necessarily the goal.
- 1:42:47There's some elements of the game that I think a little more,
- 1:42:49a little more mechanical depth makes sense.
- 1:42:53But not everything it's it's a, it's a delicate tightrope.
- 1:43:02And then little final notes. On the playbooks, so we also
- 1:43:07have two other kinds of playbooks basically we have the
- 1:43:13extended playbooks and the Warriors of the World Ablaze
- 1:43:17playbooks. So extended playbooks are
- 1:43:20something that every version of Apocalypse World has had.
- 1:43:23They are basically, they're normal.
- 1:43:27They're playbooks that fit into the game fine, but they're
- 1:43:31always going to be weirder than the bass playbooks, and they
- 1:43:35tend to require a little more expertise or know how on the
- 1:43:39GM's part to make them run smoothly.
- 1:43:42And it seems like this is still the case for 3rd edition to go
- 1:43:47down the list of what I mean by they're weirder and harder to
- 1:43:50deal with. The burned over extended
- 1:43:53playlists are the Bloodhound, which is somebody grappling with
- 1:43:57the mysteries of reality. The child Thing, a feral kid,
- 1:44:00not quite human. The Contaminated, a disease
- 1:44:04vector for apocalyptic horror. No one haunted by trauma and
- 1:44:08visions of a forgotten past. The Quarantine.
- 1:44:10A soldier locked in stasis from before the world ended.
- 1:44:13Which is that? The quarantines in the preview
- 1:44:15PDF? The symbiote, a compound entity
- 1:44:20and hive mind. Oh, that's a yeah, You play a
- 1:44:24symbiote creature, The Undaunted.
- 1:44:29Yeah, The Undaunted A. Fearless.
- 1:44:31Parent of a real. Or metaphorical Child, the
- 1:44:34Vigilant on guard against the wolves of the Maelstrom, the
- 1:44:38Weaponized, a combat Cyborg who survived the Apocalypse.
- 1:44:41Or the X Earther, descended from refugees who rode out the
- 1:44:45Apocalypse on in Earth's orbit. Oh, and then the last one is a
- 1:44:49Forerunner. The apocalypse is happening
- 1:44:52right now, not 50 years ago. I like that.
- 1:44:57Yeah. So an entire playbook that
- 1:44:59changes the. Way that the game is going.
- 1:45:00To be played because it goes from the apocalypse happened to
- 1:45:04the apocalypse is happening right now just based on that
- 1:45:07playbook being in play, right? So the extended playbooks are a
- 1:45:12little more to deal with. So if you're not an experienced
- 1:45:16MC of Apocalypse World, you're probably not going to want to
- 1:45:18deal with them. It might be a little too much.
- 1:45:22I will say the weaponized we actually had a weaponized
- 1:45:25character in the in the campaign that I was a player in.
- 1:45:29Yes, we had a robot man. He was very cool.
- 1:45:32He was he was a basically a a war weapon from the before times
- 1:45:36was like sealed out of his cryo containment tube.
- 1:45:44So yeah, that's the extended playbooks.
- 1:45:46And then the Warriors, the warriors of the, yeah, warriors
- 1:45:50of the world ablaze are playbooks that are swords and
- 1:45:56sword. And.
- 1:45:56Sorcery style playbooks but in a post apocalypse.
- 1:45:59So the idea is like instead of the apocalypse causing the
- 1:46:02psychic maelstrom, the apocalypse caused everyone to
- 1:46:05acquire magic powers. I'm very.
- 1:46:09Excited to see how these turn. Out 'cause obviously there's a
- 1:46:12lot of potential for these. We got a preview of two of them,
- 1:46:18and I don't have much to say yet because we only got 2.
- 1:46:24We got the Harrow Queen and the the hunting kite and hunter
- 1:46:30hunt. Hunting, hunting kite.
- 1:46:31Hunting kite. Yeah, the Harrow Queen is
- 1:46:34basically like a weird cult queen leader there.
- 1:46:40How does the how does it describe it?
- 1:46:42The chosen leader of a Fearson independent enclave.
- 1:46:47And then the hunting kite is a warrior and killer.
- 1:46:50Quick and almost untouchable. So like ninja ninja killer the
- 1:46:55hunter guy and like weird enclave of magic shit wizard
- 1:47:01lady. The two things I did notice
- 1:47:06that. Gives me some.
- 1:47:08That intrigued me. Is that we don't have a lot from
- 1:47:13the. Previews, but in the Harrow.
- 1:47:15Queen, it specifically mentions the a standard move called
- 1:47:19sorcery, a standard move which is similar to like the augury
- 1:47:24and the wealth and the behind the wheel, right?
- 1:47:25Those moves a standard move for sorcery.
- 1:47:29Which is interesting 'cause that I'm curious to see how Baker's
- 1:47:32going to interpret like spell casting mechanics in Apocalypse
- 1:47:37World basically. And then the hunting.
- 1:47:41Kite has a. Stat question mark.
- 1:47:44I don't know if it's a stat per SE, but it has like a unique
- 1:47:48stat thing called malice and a couple of its move reference
- 1:47:52this. Malice stat.
- 1:47:54And you roll. You can like, roll plus malice.
- 1:47:58So Oh, Harrow Queen has malice too, Yeah.
- 1:48:01Oh, is it in OK I? Didn't see it in there.
- 1:48:03So I don't know what that's going to look like.
- 1:48:06It sounds like a unique stat for sounds like it's going to be a
- 1:48:10unique step for this for this part of the game, this is going
- 1:48:15to be. In the main game too, it's.
- 1:48:16Going to be like a, it's going to be like an optional bit of
- 1:48:18the game basically, so I don't. Have a ton to say on the
- 1:48:24Warriors. Blaze, but I'm very intrigued to
- 1:48:26see where they go. Hopefully it'll be cool.
- 1:48:32I kind of, yeah. I mean.
- 1:48:33I like that the the hunting. Kite you get a bunch of cool
- 1:48:36shit, like you get a distinctive sword or a distinctive.
- 1:48:39Dagger or a? Distinctive special weapons, and
- 1:48:42I could very easily remake my boy Samir with the distinctive
- 1:48:45hand weapon with wool, wool chain blade.
- 1:48:48Yeah, the Hunting Kite has a little bit of the Battle Babe's
- 1:48:50custom weapon. Thing going on, so yeah.
- 1:48:57See I I'm. I'm definitely excited to see
- 1:48:59where. This little element of the game.
- 1:49:00Goes and I didn't expect it to happen, but here we are.
- 1:49:06I was kind of jumping around on. The AMA question, so I don't
- 1:49:09necessarily need to say a lot or we don't need to go through
- 1:49:13them, go through all of them. We've jumped.
- 1:49:15We jumped around and mentioned, I mentioned a bunch of them
- 1:49:17already, couple ones that I thought were interesting.
- 1:49:23Somebody asked what are you most changes from from the previous
- 1:49:28editions? What are you most excited about?
- 1:49:30And Vincent Baker said the new stand out playbook is one that
- 1:49:33he's really excited about. And he said he really likes the
- 1:49:36new advanced moves and that's where he made the comment about
- 1:49:39the fourth level play. So I'm curious to see what the
- 1:49:41new advanced moves are. That's that's enticing.
- 1:49:45I would say if he's really excited.
- 1:49:46About the new advanced moves. Because advanced moves are
- 1:49:48pretty cool. They basically give you a crit,
- 1:49:51more or less. They give you like a if you.
- 1:49:57They make it so that if. You roll A12 plus you.
- 1:49:59Get like new options. Somebody asked about the.
- 1:50:06Sword and sorcery playbooks and. Basically the design brief is
- 1:50:11sword and sorcery playbooks that slot into the rules as is.
- 1:50:15I've hit the brief close to, but not quite 100%.
- 1:50:17They bring along with them a few new tags, new standard moves,
- 1:50:20things like this, things like that.
- 1:50:23You can mix them in with the core play books without any
- 1:50:26friction if you're thoughtful about it.
- 1:50:28I'm really excited about them. So I like everything he's saying
- 1:50:32on those bad boys, cause yeah. The idea that you can mix or.
- 1:50:38Match them or make them their own thing means there should be
- 1:50:41some good meat on those bones. We talked about the hard.
- 1:50:46Versus aggro thing. Somebody, oh somebody asked
- 1:50:53about if the MPC or sorry if the MC Prep rules are going to be.
- 1:51:02Drastically different. For a third edition and
- 1:51:04basically like no, some added stuff for the new rules, but the
- 1:51:10the base idea is still there. Oh yeah, somebody.
- 1:51:18Another person. Asked about.
- 1:51:21They said that I've always seen Apocalypse World as a game
- 1:51:23about. Community and how?
- 1:51:24Different people wield power and influence.
- 1:51:27Are there any new mechanics for the GM and players to engage
- 1:51:30with on that level? Yes, There's stuff scattered all
- 1:51:33over the place, but this is the whole basis for the new barter
- 1:51:36system. In this edition, you don't spend
- 1:51:38cash, You don't spend barter as cash, you roll it.
- 1:51:43And it explicitly includes power and influence, not just wealth.
- 1:51:47Which, Yeah. So basically he's saying there
- 1:51:52is stuff scattered throughout to reinforce that community like
- 1:51:56struggle vibe. That one we already did.
- 1:52:04You do announce your moves that. Oh yeah.
- 1:52:05Somebody he the misconception thing.
- 1:52:09Oh yeah. This was I thought was an
- 1:52:10interesting comment. I don't know what to make of
- 1:52:12this, but he said where is it? Oh, any advice to someone
- 1:52:19jumping into third edition as their first foray into
- 1:52:21Apocalypse World when it's done? 3rd edition to the easiest
- 1:52:25Apocalypse World yet to jump into.
- 1:52:27You know how everybody says to play PBTA games you have to
- 1:52:31forget D&D and play the game on its own terms.
- 1:52:34My advice for Apocalypse World third edition would be play it
- 1:52:37on its own terms. You might also have to set aside
- 1:52:40what you know about PBTA. Oh yeah, I don't know what.
- 1:52:48That means well. I was like, OK.
- 1:52:54I'll keep an open. Mind, I guess.
- 1:52:56Sure, yeah. I mean, right.
- 1:53:02Like I, I, I don't, I don't. Really know what it means by
- 1:53:04that. Stuff.
- 1:53:06You mean stuff and things like I it?
- 1:53:07Could mean a lot. There's a lot of potential
- 1:53:09things. That could mean, yeah.
- 1:53:10I mean, there's the, there's the really like.
- 1:53:15What is it the? The John Romero's about to make
- 1:53:18you his bitch. Like it's kind of got that vibe
- 1:53:20to it. Like, what the fuck are we
- 1:53:21talking about? Hopefully it doesn't end up like
- 1:53:23whatever the fuck that game was called.
- 1:53:24The camera was called Ultra Killers.
- 1:53:25Did you talk about Die Cortana? Yeah, Die Cortana.
- 1:53:29Yeah, Hopefully that's not. What?
- 1:53:31No, hopefully not. Another comment that he made to
- 1:53:40somebody else that. Also is like, what do you mean
- 1:53:41by that, Sir? He said the person says what do
- 1:53:46you like most about? PBTA about.
- 1:53:48What PBTA became as an RPGRPG genre and the last little bit
- 1:53:54he's he gave a longer answer, but the last little bit of the
- 1:53:57answer was this means that the thing that all PBTA games and
- 1:54:01have in common is they all contradict Apocalypse World in
- 1:54:04some important way. It was kind of like.
- 1:54:10What? I guess I should, actually, it's
- 1:54:13not that long, he said. I like.
- 1:54:14Most the diversity I. Like to say this games don't
- 1:54:18have parents and children. They aren't biological.
- 1:54:20When one game influences another, it doesn't replicate
- 1:54:22itself like genetics. It inspires and provokes.
- 1:54:25A new game isn't descended from the games that came before, it
- 1:54:28answers back to them. This means that the thing all
- 1:54:31Pbta games have in common is they all contradict in
- 1:54:34Apocalypse World in some important ways.
- 1:54:38Again, I don't I don't know what the.
- 1:54:39Fuck. You mean by that Kelby Bryant?
- 1:54:40I don't really know. Yeah.
- 1:54:41That's yeah, I don't really know.
- 1:54:45So he had a couple, yeah. There was a.
- 1:54:48Those are a couple I pointed out, but yeah.
- 1:54:54That. He.
- 1:54:56Had a couple of responses where I was like I.
- 1:54:57Don't know what to do with that, but it's interesting.
- 1:55:04And then. Oh, and the.
- 1:55:05Last little one I. Marked was that he's really
- 1:55:08excited about the Warriors Ablaze playbooks 'cause they're
- 1:55:10challenging to make and they're fun.
- 1:55:11Which, yeah, makes sense. And of the core playbooks, his
- 1:55:15favorites are the the Stand Out and the Harrier, at least at
- 1:55:19this moment. In the hack book, the Harrier
- 1:55:21was much worse and didn't hold together very well.
- 1:55:24The new Harrier keeps what was good about the hack book version
- 1:55:27and brings in what was good about the chopper and builds on
- 1:55:29both. No, he is pleased with the work.
- 1:55:35On his work on the Harrier. So yeah, that was that was the.
- 1:55:40Last one I had. Mentioned I am.
- 1:55:51I'll, I'll be honest. Actually as like a, as like a.
- 1:55:55Closing thought. My very, very first response to
- 1:55:58when I saw this Kickstarter was I don't know if I actually want
- 1:56:02this. That was my very initial
- 1:56:04response. You didn't know that you wanted
- 1:56:07a third edition? Yeah.
- 1:56:10Well, two things. One I.
- 1:56:11Didn't fully understand that it was.
- 1:56:13A third edition, I was slightly confused because he called it
- 1:56:15burned over and I was like wait a minute, but burned over
- 1:56:18already exists. So that was my first confusion
- 1:56:22and then the other then after that I was kind of like I.
- 1:56:24Don't know if I. Want 'cause I had played the
- 1:56:28burned over hack book I was like I.
- 1:56:29Don't know if I want. A full version of that game that
- 1:56:32I played there. Like I don't know if I like a
- 1:56:35lot of the changes that it was making, but reading his
- 1:56:42responses. To the AMA and reading what's in
- 1:56:44the preview. Stuff I am now I he has won me.
- 1:56:48Over. And I'm like, OK, I'm excited.
- 1:56:50Now, so it worked out. Yeah, fair enough.
- 1:56:57I had like a. Questionable initial.
- 1:56:58Response and then. Was like, all right, fair
- 1:57:02enough. You know, I, you know what's
- 1:57:06funny? I had AI had an interesting.
- 1:57:07Kind of opposite reaction to. To Tom Bloom, because he he put
- 1:57:11something out a little while ago for like what his next game was
- 1:57:16going to be. And I think he basically was
- 1:57:18like, I'm there's no way for me to, to remove dice rolls at all,
- 1:57:23like completely from a tabletop game, but I'm going to see us
- 1:57:25how far I can get. And like.
- 1:57:26I don't want that though. There is a.
- 1:57:31There is actually a P. BTA game that.
- 1:57:33Has no dice rolls at all. It's called Undying.
- 1:57:38And you you play a coterie of vampires.
- 1:57:45Yeah, I don't know if. I don't I I like math rocks too
- 1:57:47much. I don't want to I.
- 1:57:48Yeah, that was kind of my response.
- 1:57:50I I remember looking into. Undying one time and I know a
- 1:57:52lot of people said it was really interesting.
- 1:57:54I don't remember. If I remember correctly, the way
- 1:57:57it works is you kind of like you.
- 1:57:59Barter. With like a currency that you
- 1:58:01all have, I think was the mechanic, but I don't totally
- 1:58:04remember if I'm being honest. But yeah, I, I.
- 1:58:14Yeah, I don't know the. Removing dice thing I find a
- 1:58:18little like. I don't know why.
- 1:58:21Why do you want to remove? Dice I guess would be my.
- 1:58:24Question, other that, do you just want to do it as like a
- 1:58:26flex to just see if you could do it?
- 1:58:28Maybe. I don't know.
- 1:58:29I yeah, I don't know. It's also weird because he made
- 1:58:30a board game, Magnegothica Malagaste.
- 1:58:35Which? Is and.
- 1:58:37Get much more dice heavy than a board game.
- 1:58:40Well, maybe that's why. Maybe he went so dice.
- 1:58:42Heavy. He went so heavy in.
- 1:58:43One Direction. Now he wants to see if he can go
- 1:58:45the complete opposite. Fucking maybe.
- 1:58:48Maybe. I don't know, I'm just guessing.
- 1:58:51I I, I mean, I'm OK with the idea of.
- 1:58:53Removing dice if you replace. It with some kind of different
- 1:58:56random generation of some kind, you know 'cause like.
- 1:59:03For me, it's not the dice themselves, it's.
- 1:59:07Just the idea of the random number generation creating
- 1:59:10unexpected events. So like if the game is based.
- 1:59:15On a deck of cards, for example. Or fucking throwing jacks on the
- 1:59:20table or some shit, fine. It doesn't have to be diced
- 1:59:24necessarily in my book. Yeah.
- 1:59:27I mean, if there's if there's something to to.
- 1:59:28Generate the random numbers. Then it should be fine.
- 1:59:31Yeah. Yeah, that's Dredge.
- 1:59:33Dred doesn't use dice, but I want to play that as well.
- 1:59:35Right, because. There is, you know Dred is a
- 1:59:38Jenga tower, which is a weird way to do it, but it works.
- 1:59:42No, yeah. So yes, I am.
- 1:59:47I don't know. I don't know.
- 1:59:48I'm excited. I don't know.
- 1:59:49I mean, of course I'm excited. I don't know how you're feeling.
- 1:59:53I don't know if looking. I mean, I don't really have a
- 1:59:54dog in this race, but I'm. Interested.
- 1:59:56What do you mean you don't have a dog in this race?
- 2:00:00But like. I.
- 2:00:03Like would. I run apocalypse.
- 2:00:06World. Maybe?
- 2:00:08What I'm more interested in is to see how.
- 2:00:10This. Re recontextualizes Pbta for the
- 2:00:15next generation of games. Restarts Pbta again.
- 2:00:18Yeah, yeah. I could see if it's as if it's
- 2:00:22as divisive. And are changing.
- 2:00:26As he is. Describing it then you know some
- 2:00:30crazy shit bound to happen. Probably.
- 2:00:33Yeah. No, that's fair.
- 2:00:34Yeah, seeing what? They're I'm not necessarily it's
- 2:00:38not the product itself, but it's is the knock on effect.
- 2:00:41Yeah, Yeah, that's fair. All right, all right.
- 2:00:46That has been us. I have nothing else to add.
- 2:00:52That has been us. Go buy Apocalypse World.
- 2:00:55That's what I'll say. Go buy Apocalypse World.
- 2:00:57Game good, Game good. Game good.
- 2:01:02Go back, go back.
