- 0:01Speaker 1: We now turn to the Springfield Sun to bring you
- 0:03news from in and around Washington County. Your reader today
- 0:07is Amy Jones Timmedy. We begin with the addition dated Wednesday,
- 0:12February fifth, twenty twenty five. As a reminder, Lady Ali
- 0:17is a reading service intended for people who are blind
- 0:20or have other disabilities that make it difficult to read
- 0:23printed material. Our first story today hung jury in retrial
- 0:30of Marion County woman previously convicted of child abuse. By
- 0:35Jane Reid Kline February fifth, twenty twenty five. The jury
- 0:39in the retrial of Melissa Pittman could not reach a
- 0:42consensus as to Pittman's guilt or innocence of the charge
- 0:45of first degree criminal abuse. Originally convicted and sentenced in
- 0:50twenty seventeen, Pittman had only about thirteen months remaining on
- 0:54her sentence when, with the help of the Kentucky Innocence Project,
- 0:58her conviction was overturned. Pittman, of Bradsfordsville, was originally indicted
- 1:04in twenty thirteen for first degree criminal abuse after she
- 1:08allegedly physically abused her step grandson, Seth Martinez. Pittman pled
- 1:13not guilty to the charges. On March twenty ninth, twenty thirteen, Pittman,
- 1:18who had been appointed his guardian at the time, took
- 1:21Seth to Taylor Regional Hospital. According to medical records, he
- 1:25was unresponsive and was blown to University of Kentucky Hospital
- 1:29with a suspected brain bleed. His body was totally stiff,
- 1:33his eyes were dilated, and he was completely unresponsive, according
- 1:38to those records. Doctors also noted in his records that
- 1:41he had new and old bruises on his body. At
- 1:45one point, Seth was believed to be brain dead. He
- 1:48remained at UK Hospital until May of twenty thirteen, when
- 1:51he was transferred to the Home of the Innocent because
- 1:54his family was unable to provide the twenty four hour
- 1:57care that he needed to survive. At that time, Seth
- 2:01was diagnosed with pediatric abuse of health or head trauma,
- 2:06child physical abuse, and severe medical neglect as a result
- 2:10of his injuries. He is completely dependent on others for
- 2:13every aspect of his care. While Pittman maintained Set's injuries
- 2:17were the result of falls in a long term brain disorder,
- 2:20a joint investigation between the Department of Community Based Services
- 2:24and the Kentucky State police began shortly after Seth was
- 2:28initially taken to the hospital. Based upon the investigation, Amaran
- 2:33County brand jury indicted Pittman on August sixteenth, twenty thirteen,
- 2:37alleging first degree criminal abuse. The case continued to be
- 2:41investigated and went a trial in November of twenty sixteen.
- 2:45The jury convicted Pittman of first degree criminal abuse. Pittman
- 2:49filed an appeal, which was officially denied on Mark twenty second,
- 2:53twenty eighteen. On May thirty first, twenty twenty four, with
- 2:57thirteen months left to serve twenty seventeen, conviction was overturned
- 3:02through strong advocacy from the Kentucky Innocence Project and the
- 3:06Post conviction branch of the Kentucky Public Defender's Office. Quote.
- 3:12Melissa was convicted of first degree child abuse with a
- 3:14sentenceing enhancement in connection to her efforts to care for
- 3:18her two year old step grandchild. She took emergency custody
- 3:21of the child, who was already developmentally delayed and suffering
- 3:25from an untreated and worshening brain condition after his parents
- 3:29did not care for him. Despite her efforts, his condition worsened. Ultimately,
- 3:34a pediatrician who had not treated the boy, looked at
- 3:36his records and drew the conclusion that he had did
- 3:38a victim of abuse, including head trauma, that set the
- 3:42stage for her conviction. End of quote, the Kentucky Innocence
- 3:46Project said in a statement upon her release. At a
- 3:50post conviction hearing on May twenty eight, the court heard
- 3:53from two different positions with expertise in shaken baby syndrome
- 3:57and abuse of health trauma or head trauma, testified to
- 4:00the child's pre existing condition and several accidental falls that
- 4:04contributed to his health deterioration. The court agreed that that
- 4:09was enough to throw out the original conviction, leading to
- 4:12Pittman's release and setting the stage for the retrial. In
- 4:16the retrial that began on Monday, January twenty seventh, twenty
- 4:20twenty five, both sides presented new expert witnesses and contradictory conclusions.
- 4:26The jury heard much of the original testimony and evidence
- 4:30presented in Pittman's first trial. It seems that expert witnesses
- 4:34shed new light on the case. After three and a
- 4:37half hours of deliberation, the jury said they could not
- 4:41reach a consensus. The vote was tended to Judge Todd
- 4:45Falding asked them to continue deliberations in hopes of a verdict.
- 4:49After six more hours of deliberation, the jury was still
- 4:52tended to and concluded a verdict could not be reached.
- 4:56On Thursday, January thirtieth, shortly after nine pm, Judge Spalding
- 5:00declared a hung jury. A source inside the courthouse said
- 5:04the vote was ten innocent and two wanting to convict
- 5:07on a lesser misdemeanor charge. This has not been confirmed.
- 5:11It is unknown at this time if the Commonwealth Attorney's
- 5:14Office will retry the case yet again. The case is
- 5:18scheduled for a status conference on February twenty seconds. Washington
- 5:24County moves to second lowest jobless rate in the State
- 5:28Staff Report February sixth, twenty twenty five. Despite a mild increase,
- 5:34Washington County has moved up one notch to the second
- 5:36lowest unemployment rate in the Commonwealth. Washington and Marion Counties
- 5:41were tied for third place for November twenty twenty four
- 5:45with a rate of three point nine percent. December through
- 5:48Washington County's new rate of four percent in Marion County
- 5:51at four point one percent, Marion County is tied for
- 5:55sixth best rate. In December twenty twenty three, Washington County
- 5:59posted rate of two point nine percent, while Marion was
- 6:02at three point one percent. Washington and Marion Counties were
- 6:08not alone in the increase over last year. Unemployment rates
- 6:11rose in all one hundred twenty counties between December twenty
- 6:14twenty three and December twenty twenty four, according to the
- 6:18Kentucky Center for Statistics ky STATS, an agency within the
- 6:22Kentucky Education and Labor Cabinet. Woodford County recorded the lowest
- 6:26jobless rate in the Commonwealth at three point eight percent.
- 6:30It was followed by Anderson, Sayett, Shelby, and Washington Counties
- 6:34four percent each, and Carroll, Marion, Oldham, and Scott Counties
- 6:39four point one percent each. Martin County recorded the state's
- 6:43highest unemployment rate at twelve point four percent. It was
- 6:47followed by Macgoffin County eleven percent, and Elliott and Lewis
- 6:51County's ten point four percent each. The comparable unadjusted unemployment
- 6:56rate for the state was five point one percent for
- 6:58December twenty twenty five, four and three point eight percent
- 7:02of the nation. Ky STATS knows unemployment statistics are based
- 7:06on estimates and are compiled to measure trends rather than
- 7:10actually count people working. Civilian labor force statistics include non
- 7:15military workers and unemployed Kentuckians who are actively seeking work.
- 7:20They do not include unemployed Kentuckians who have not looked
- 7:23for employment within the past four weeks. The day they
- 7:27should only be compared to the same month in previous years.
