- 3:20Chief of Detectives. My name is Friday. Was seven fifty five am when
- 3:23I got the room, twenty seven a robbery detail morning. A Hi Joe
- 3:30wry Hi Joe called out, isn't it Rank What are you doing here this
- 3:35early? Can't you sleep? I'm waiting for something special delivery letter for my
- 3:38brother went up in Frisco with a police department. Yeah, only up there.
- 3:42They don't like it when you call it Frisco. Yeah, he's in
- 3:45robbery detail. Called him last night. All three kids are the Tonsos at
- 3:49the same day. Thought it'd be nice to call see how they were all
- 3:52three at once? Yeah, Tonson's and nothing these days? How they make
- 3:55a good home already? What's the letter got to do with it? Oh?
- 4:00Well, my brother told me he was sending down some dope on four
- 4:01pretty rough characters. Thinks are headed our way. Sending mugshots too. You
- 4:05and your brother running a detective agency on the side. Mmmm, it's a
- 4:10little irregular. The official correspondence will come a little later. What do you
- 4:13know about the guys almost killed him? Man? I didn't get any details.
- 4:16It's all in the letter. Ought to be here and the Minute mailed
- 4:19it at noon yesterday. How come you moved down here with your family,
- 4:21Franklin? You like it up nore like La better, more elbow room here?
- 4:26You live in a house and a lot, not just an apartment.
- 4:29I get it robbery Friday. It's Wilson. Tony shops that John, Yeah,
- 4:34I think so, hold it? Will you Tony here? Huh?
- 4:39I didn't see it behind that paper for me. Yeah, he's here.
- 4:42What have you not? Bessy asked him to come over with that, especially
- 4:45a couple of Mexican girls. You can't speak English. I guess we can
- 4:47spare them for a while. I'll tell him what's up. Well, that's
- 4:50Wilson and auto detail. He'd like you to go over an nexts interpreter for
- 4:53a couple of Mexican girls. Are they pretty? You're not going down there
- 4:56to marry him, I'll bet you. While I'm at parties, nothing much
- 5:01doing slow day. They don't come often enough for me. They did,
- 5:08we'd be out of a job. It was one of those rare slow days.
- 5:15I killed a couple of hours going over the daily reports, cleaned out
- 5:18the top drawer of my desk, shot in a few pencils. At ten
- 5:23fifteen am, the special delivery letter came for Frank. He slit the top
- 5:27open with his pocket knife and shook out four mud shots. Here it is
- 5:34following four men wanted for robberies, auto thefts and safe Burgnary's in San Francisco
- 5:40Bay area. Cliff Small nineteen George Shum twenty, both escaped from Preston Julius
- 5:46Carver eighteen, Fred and Malick twenty, both Army deserters. I'm gonna checks
- 5:51out with that APB from me saf last week. What are the records of
- 5:54a small shot an army captain during an argument at a bar, Capers,
- 6:00These men shouted out with us and escaped. Information shows all four left four
- 6:04at the signs of several days ago, driving stolen car, blue Chevrolet,
- 6:09probably using cold plates. Let me see those lug shots in here. I
- 6:14don't know, we know who we're looking for, brother tell us where just
- 6:19a couple of nice girls that got mixed up with the wrong guys. Can
- 6:21take a look at these pictures. Oh, the Monk's from San Francisco.
- 6:25Yeah, says they're in a stolen car cold plates. That's how these girls
- 6:29were picked up a hot car HU. They went for a ride with a
- 6:31couple of guys they met at a movie. When the car ran out of
- 6:34gas, the boys dug the girls got picked up. They have a lead
- 6:38on the guy. No, not a thing. The young guys around twenty.
- 6:42You think these might be the ones from Frisco. Let's talk to girls.
- 6:44Come on, Frank, you want to cover the office? Oh yeah,
- 6:47sure. They speak English at all, not enough to make sense.
- 7:00That's dolorous. And this one is Marie. The robbery details they say,
- 7:06and I said, oh status, He says, they didn't do anything.
- 7:13I suppose they told you all I know already. And they're not much help.
- 7:15They said they don't know anything about the fellows they were with. I'm
- 7:18showing these. Ask them if they've ever seen him before? Says that's individual.
- 7:25Mm see, he's see. These are the guys that took him out
- 7:34last night. Ask him. Karen asked, are you assume Carver and Melik
- 7:43the army deserves? Ask him to describe money, call Myosmas and cart and
- 7:49points. That was cool, Parian, we rough for you have love and
- 7:57ba. She says. They sat in the car all the time, was
- 8:00dark, but they looked very handsome and they talk nice. Where did the
- 8:03fellow speck him up? They told me in front of the Jubilee Theater Second
- 8:05and Broadway. Yeah, and then what the girls couldn't understand English, but
- 8:09they understood when the boys motioned them to hop in, and as thought Maria
- 8:18creo a bearl of wisto and like l do mingo. She says, No,
- 8:24Marie thought she recognized them from church Sundy, but she was mistaken.
- 8:30Must have been some date. The boys couldn't talk Spanish and the girls couldn't
- 8:33talk in where'd they go on this ride, Tony. They don't know the
- 8:37streets. They just know they got to the beach and then they turned around.
- 8:39We're about halfway back on the car and out of gas. That's again
- 8:43she didn't get Marie here to talk in my ear. Come in at tomorrow
- 8:48and parier I'll apply, you must say I margiea premer paramos esperamos judges your
- 9:03in squad. She doesn't know, but she remembers. They stopped in their
- 9:05little hotel. The girls wait a while. The boys took a little puppy
- 9:09out of the car and put it in their room, a puppy. Well,
- 9:11if they don't know where the hotel was, maybe they can tell us
- 9:13what it was near. Okay, and nice Tina be a nice Tassi in
- 9:22the Gasolina, and she says, there was a gas station on the corner.
- 9:26What else can I Tellolo de los Reles PPI, She says. Across
- 9:39the car tracks there were two or three big garajis. Hmm, could be
- 9:43in west Lake District. That's the garage and second Way hotels around there.
- 9:48Reached First Street, maybe Grand Avenue, Picicle, Picko, Pico Pico.
- 10:01We took the girls with us and drove out to Grand and Pico, and
- 10:03then up and down Pico's slow until the girls pointed out a hotel just south
- 10:07of Flower. They weren't sure. Ben and I got out. We walked
- 10:09up to the hotel desk. The clerk was just starting to vacuum. We're
- 10:16looking for Julius carbon Fred Malick. Did they stand here? Wats the names?
- 10:20Can't hey over the vackrum Julius Carver and Fred Malick. No, I'm
- 10:24not here. Police officers. You take a look at these pictures. Oh,
- 10:28it could have been two of the boys or checked out this morning,
- 10:31but they didn't look as tough as this. How many weather? Or here
- 10:35are two more pictures? You have a luck? Please could be about the
- 10:41right aid? How long did they stay? Just two nights? Did they
- 10:43have a puff with him? I said, they have a puff with him?
- 10:48Puffy dog yes they did, Yes, a little collie puff. Did
- 10:52they pay up? No? They skipped out, owing me two days.
- 10:56Can we see how they registered? Please shut off this dang you person can
- 11:01hardly hear himself. Think over that dragon. Now, I want to see
- 11:05the register. We use cards here. Let me see here they are Bob
- 11:16Reynolds, Jack Sharp, Jim Smith, and uh William Grant L's Vegas,
- 11:24Nevada. I must to pick those names out of a hat. They say
- 11:28where they were going? No, no forwarding address. Do they write these
- 11:31cards out themselves? I bet they did. That's the law you matter.
- 11:35If we bor them for a while, we'll have them photostat and return to
- 11:37you. We're supposed to keep me. You'll get them back. I like
- 11:39to do everything legal. Those boys in some kind of trouble. They leave
- 11:45anything in their room. They did. It's all in the vacuum for having
- 11:48to come back. Give us a ring, will you? Here's our card
- 11:50robbery detail who they rob They took you for two days. Then it was
- 11:56two pm when Tony Chavis picked h up. He had Frank o'donn Or with
- 12:00him. We stopped at a dairy lunch and I called the office and We
- 12:03split up into two teams. While Tony and Frank checked parking lots in the
- 12:05neighborhood for stolen cars, Ben and I ran down the other hotels. In
- 12:09the next three hours, we talked to a dozen desk clerks and roaming house
- 12:13managers. I'm always the same answer, no. Five thirty pm, we
- 12:16tried the Achilles Hotel on Grand Avenue. We walked into an overheated lobby crowded
- 12:20with modern furniture. There were a couple of canary cages in front of the
- 12:24faded wall tapestries. The desk clerk was a woman in the early forties.
- 12:28Good afternoon, man, Please often police office water water? Would you see
- 12:33what these policemen want? Would just take a minute. We'd like to know
- 12:37if you recognize these pictures here. No, that's no. We only take
- 12:43in honest, hard working man. Sure. I don't like anybody laying around
- 12:46the rooms all day. It keeps me from cleaning up. If your rumor's
- 12:48got a Collie pup a dog, I'd die before I had allow a dog
- 12:52in this house. And if these fellows were the dogs, try to rent
- 12:54a room, would you please fool us? Here's a number. Lili get
- 12:58them back in there. Worth's nice. More go on there. Nellie's on
- 13:03the nest now, Yes, ma'am, we'd appreciate you watching for these man
- 13:07for your own protection too. No, I'll let you know. Thank you,
- 13:09ma'am. Let's go back. Well, say, before you go with
- 13:11you, gentlemen, do me a favor, seeing it's how you're a policeman.
- 13:13Yes, ma'am. Mister maryn Ally up in room four teens a week
- 13:16behind the rent, would you do me a favor and go out and talk
- 13:18to him. I'm sorry, lady, we can't handle it. That's a
- 13:20civil matter. I'd advise you to go to room two six oh out the
- 13:22city Hall and see the city attorneys. They'll help you. Water what I
- 13:26tell you, they won't do it. That's the way the wind. It
- 13:31was dark out now and getting cold again. We walked back to Pico and
- 13:35Florida pick up Frank and Tony. Tony was there waiting for us. Hike.
- 13:39Come on up to the next corner. Frank's up there. We've got
- 13:41a hot car staked out, you know, just half a block from the
- 13:43hotel where the guys checked out. You had any luck, No, do
- 13:46you find anything in the car. He's still in it. Nothing else I
- 13:50could have stolen them last night after they left the girls. Huh. I
- 13:52called in and checked. He was taking in front of eleven ninety two door
- 13:56any drive between two and four this morning we got out a cord for about
- 14:00six flocks from where they ditched the car with the girls in it. They
- 14:01we're out of gas. It's all downhill. Would have been a natural way
- 14:05for him to go. This would be the right car. Better keep a
- 14:07steak on. Yeah, ah, Hi, Frank, Hire you do any
- 14:11good? No, Frank, If you and Tony want to go, eat
- 14:13and Ben and I'll cover the car. When you get back, we'll go
- 14:16for chop good. Dude's well, let's sit in the car. Huh Yeah,
- 14:24go ahead, Yeah, get the radio on a cigarette. Yea,
- 14:41what do you think? I don't know. Maybe it's the same guys,
- 14:43maybe not in the same neighborhood. A couple of things might tie in.
- 14:48Yeah, you can't be sure they're really making a headway about all we know
- 14:52is there in town. Yeah, and it's a good sized town right now,
- 14:56it's the biggest in the world. Seven pm. We knew the four
- 15:03gunmen were in town. We knew they'd been seen. We figured there was
- 15:05no reason for him to skip town until they pulled a job or heard that
- 15:09we were looking for them. Time was in their favor. Time to rob,
- 15:13time to kill, time to get away. The check on the hotels
- 15:16continued. We left Frank O'donnald and Tony Chavis on the stakeout, and Ben
- 15:20and I picked up the hotel routine. One place after another. Eight thirty
- 15:24pm, we walked down a long, narrow lobby to a little ball headed
- 15:28man at the desk and was wearing glasses and reading a magazine called Astrology.
- 15:33When we walked in, he tried to hide the bottle. Police officer,
- 15:37Oh, would you take a look at these pictures? Please look for see
- 15:41if you can identify him. No, no, they don't look familiar to
- 15:48me. They may be carrying a collie pup. Collie pup. Let me
- 15:54see those pictures again, all right, can look familiar? Now they had
- 16:00a pup with them? All right? Yes? I think so? I
- 16:06study faces. Yes, the same. Now they here, I don't know,
- 16:11I mean they're out for the evening. I don't know. Are they
- 16:14registered here? Yes? They are? What room are they expecting? You.
- 16:18Well, listen, this is important. Just answer the questions. What
- 16:22did they do? What's their room number? Second floor, room twenty two.
- 16:25You have the key just a second? Yeah, thank you, Come
- 16:32on, bet cover me, yeah, twenty two, give me the key.
- 16:49Yeah, watch it. Well, maybe we're home. Glow shoes,
- 17:02honor steps here, they'll be back. You are listening to Dragnet for the
- 17:17step by step solution to an actual police case. In the files of the
- 17:23Los Angeles Police Department. There are countless case histories that never got space in
- 17:27the daily newspapers. The case of Cliff Small, George Shum, Julius Carver,
- 17:33and Fred Malick was one of these four young hoodlums wanted for a series
- 17:37of robberies and petty burglaries. These men were armed, and they'd shown that
- 17:41they wouldn't hesitate to shoot. By comparison with the sensational crime headline, the
- 17:47news value of this story rated an inch of type on the fourth page of
- 17:49the second section. Yet the line separating these four young thieves from banner headlines
- 17:56and back paid space is much thinner than the average citizen realizes. The danger
- 18:00in a criminal case isn't always determined by the space allotted to it in the
- 18:03newspapers. Many a peace officer's name has appeared in the obituary column of the
- 18:07same newspaper that allotted one inch of back paid space to the crime story that
- 18:12was considered unimportant. I phoned the office and asked for two men to cover
- 18:17the stolen car. As soon as the replacements arrived, Frank O'Donnell and Tony
- 18:21Chavers left the stake out on the stolen car and joined us at the hotel.
- 18:25Was eight fifty five pm. What do they do back any idea?
- 18:29No, sir, I told these other officers I did tell you, didn't
- 18:33I? Yeah, you said they were out for the That's it. I
- 18:34know. I told you something. Was it you two? Or was it
- 18:38you too? Was this fella? And I? Oh yeah, I don't
- 18:41remember things I say so good, but I know faces things. Are you
- 18:45the manager here? Oh no, this place belongs to Claude. Claude who
- 18:48Tinny? Then you're in charge now only one Clau's not around. This is
- 18:52one of his places where we're going to stake out. Joe enough room to
- 18:55turn around this lobby. That's what I've been telling Claude, Tinny. This
- 18:59is one of his places. Yeah, maybe you better leave that bottle alone
- 19:00when we get this straightened down there. Oh no, I don't hit it
- 19:03heavy anymore. Just a little nip nown again, Crafty in here? Any
- 19:07idea where we can wait for these fellas and keep an eye on the lobby.
- 19:11No, not enough room in this lobby to turn around. And I've
- 19:12said that to Clawn. Yeah we know, Hey Clark, where does this
- 19:17door lead to? No, don't go in there. They're lighting here.
- 19:22I save old bottles. Ragman gives me a penny each for them. Is
- 19:26that a storage room? What's that that room over there? Oh, that's
- 19:30the linen room. We keep all the linen there. That's about the only
- 19:33place where is Joe if we want to wait out in the car? All
- 19:36right, we're waiting there. Now. There's a couple of chairs in there.
- 19:37I'll send the boys back when they come in. Be better. If
- 19:40you tell them nothing, how are they going to know you're here? Will
- 19:42tell them you just don't say anything, all right, sir? Now then
- 19:49I can just have your names. I'll see that the boys get the message.
- 19:52Now, look, mister, you just sit there and read your magazine.
- 19:53Don't say anything. You got that. Okay, that's the way you
- 19:57want it. Come on, let's go. What's that smell in here?
- 20:12Bleach me? Strong? M What time is? I can't see? Frank?
- 20:21You got a luminous watch nine twenty eight. They've been my genius.
- 20:29Do you give me an eight o'clock called es? Shake? Night? Smells
- 20:47giving me a headache? There's a bad in here? Yeah? Is there
- 20:56anything I can get you? Gentlemen? No, you just stay at the
- 21:00desk? Or do you please say Claude? Tenny's his name? He's the
- 21:03manager. Remember you asked me about that? Yeah, yeah, we know.
- 21:07What do you want him for? Look, you're gonna have to stay
- 21:08away from this door. We don't want him to nowhere here? Okay,
- 21:11that's the way you want it. I could use a cigarette? Yeah,
- 21:18all we need in here now smoke? What time is it? Frank?
- 21:22Oh? Never mind that said. There's two of'em. Ben, you
- 22:12come with me, Frank, Tony stay here right all right? We're checking
- 22:18out tomorrow. It's Carver and Malick. Let's go, Ben, come,
- 22:22I got your hands up. Hey, what's going on? Stan? Still?
- 22:25Okay? What's a bee? Frisk hum? There's a three eight automatic
- 22:30on Carver thirty eight caliber revolver in his hip pocket another thirty eight on Malick
- 22:37hold it, I said, but od your hand, Let me have you
- 22:45a cuff. Jo, here you go. We're your pals. What pals?
- 22:49Cliff Small and George Sham We know you're running with him. You know
- 22:52that you know where they are? How old are you? Eighteen? What's
- 22:57your name? Fred Malick? Twenty? Tony? Yeah, you and Frank
- 23:02want to take him downtown? Right, let's see you down there. Let's
- 23:04go. Frank, say you got him? Huh up two of them.
- 23:11We're gonna wait for the other two. Now, you just play it straight
- 23:14and stay away from that linen room. How long you're gonna be in there?
- 23:17Chamber maids starts making up the beds around seven am. You don't have
- 23:19to be getting out that linen in there. It's only ten thirty lots of
- 23:22time. We changed the sheets three times a week in this hotel. I'm
- 23:26not a worry in the world. Let's get back in there. I don't
- 23:38know what that smell is in here? Well I saw, yeah, I
- 23:42forgot about that pup. That would be the tip. I'll go get him.
- 23:49Come on, little collu here we go. Come on, boy,
- 24:00you yeah, but I'll put him down on the floor. Don't step on
- 24:03him, right right? Yeah, what do you want? Are you gonna
- 24:15wait for the other two boys? Yeah? Well you get away from the
- 24:18door. Say I want to help you all I can. Yeah. Yeah.
- 24:22That fuzzy little pup of Theirs, he's running all around the lobb.
- 24:25Yeah, we've got him in here. Yeah, you better go out there
- 24:26and get him. He's barking. It'll tip him off. Yeah all right,
- 24:30Now go on back to the desk. All right, then you stay
- 24:32in here. I'll see if I can catch him he comes around here.
- 24:36Agin't even have to wait in here. You see, your watch must be
- 24:41around eleven, said a clerk. Again. Yeah, say listen, I've
- 24:53been all over the lobby. You fellas are in the clear. What do
- 24:56you mean that dog of Theirs he's gone. You're in the clear. Look,
- 25:02he's in here with us. Now. Will you stay away from here

- 25:49you are, and so them. Yeah, now let's feed that pop.
- 25:56Twelve fifteen am. We took the prisoners out of the City Hall of the
- 26:00interrogation room. Tony Chavis and Frank o'donnald were there with the other two,
- 26:04Carver and Malick, while Ben helped question the suspects and made out the necessary
- 26:08reports. I went across the street to the Federal cafe. I picked up
- 26:11two ten cent bottles of milk and a few slices of bread. Looked at
- 26:18him, go he was hungry. Yeah, how'd you come out? And
- 26:22I got it all here. Let's see four store and cars eight knowing robberies
- 26:27and sand Francis good. They copped out too, great jobs in Portland,
- 26:30they admitted. You remember that Bakersfield liquor store hold up about four weeks ago
- 26:34for Watson job They pull that, Yeah, probably a lot more I haven't
- 26:38told us all of it. Jin got out of app You'll probably get a
- 26:42lot more wants on him. Well that's it. None of them read them
- 26:45old enough to vote yet. But they've committed practically every crime in the book.
- 26:51Just one thing more left to work out. What do we do with
- 26:52the pup? How about PCA that final home pon No, not this little
- 26:56guy. Why don't you take him? Tony, you got kids, You've
- 27:00got a deal. And adelante esperopolicia translation, your mother was a colleague.
- 27:11But from now on europolice dog. The story you have just heard was true,
- 27:23only the names were changed to protect the innocent. On February ninth,
- 27:30trial was held in Superior Court, Department eighty eighth, City and County of
- 27:33Los Angeles, State of California. In a moment the results of that trial,
- 27:45Clifford Small, George Shum, Julius Carver, and Fred Malick were released
- 27:49to San Francisco authorities, where they were tried and convicted on eight counts of
- 27:52robbery in the first degree. A hold was placed on them by the State
- 27:56of Oregon. They are now serving their term in the state penitentiary. You
- 28:03have just staired dragnet a series of authentic cases from official files Technical Advice Board.
- 28:08Dragnet comes from the Office of Chief of Police W. A. Wharton,
- 28:11Los Angeles Police Department. Tomorrow. Here the Ronald Coleman's charming series The
- 28:17Halls of Ivy on NBC Welcome Back. This is one of those scripts many
- 28:33radio scripts were reused for television. This is one where there was a pretty
- 28:38significant difference in a couple of ways between the radio and TV version of the
- 28:45same story. First of all, this was filmed with or recorded for radio,
- 28:51with Ben Romero as Friday's partner. When it went to television, Frank
- 28:56Smith was Friday's partner, and so the extra Frank was cut and Frank Smith
- 29:04got this Frank's dialogue and Romero and Friday's dialogue was divided up between Friday and
- 29:12Smith. Other big difference is the lead up to the climactic scene and the
- 29:18hotel desk clerk. In this original story, it's kind of implied that the
- 29:23desk clerk has perhaps had a couple drinks, but his characterization doesn't necessarily scream
- 29:32drunk here, more just that he's a little bit of a knot. In
- 29:34the TV version, Peter Leeds played the clerk, and he went with a
- 29:41characterization that didn't just suggest the guy was drunk, but pretty much showed it.
- 29:48He had growth of facial hair and kind of looked like he slept in
- 29:56a gutter of the previous knot, And I think that was an attempt to
- 30:00gather as much of a comedic field to this last third of the episode as
- 30:06they could. Whether that particular approach was better or not is certainly a matter
- 30:11for debate, and of course there are many people who would take issue with
- 30:17the portrayal of funny drunks, though this is not something that nineteen fifties drag
- 30:25net really had a problem with. There are multiple episodes, particularly on the
- 30:29radio, where drunk people are used for comedic effect, though it's pretty much
- 30:36disappeared when you get to the nineteen sixties television series, but it's never taken
- 30:41on in a sort of head on way until actually the last season of Adam
- 30:48twelve. There was an episode where Dick Van Patten played a what started out
- 30:57as a funny drunk but then when he saw there was something far more sad
- 31:03and dangerous behind that facade. But you'll still hear or see that from time
- 31:10to time in the classic series, because it was just one of those dramatic
- 31:14conventions of the day that people use to add comedy to programs. Now,
- 31:19another thing to note again is the reuse of certain last names. You'll hear
- 31:26them constantly reuse for different characters. In this case, it's the last name
- 31:32Carver. That's a very common name for criminals, suspects, victims in Dragnet.
- 31:37There are others, but Carver really stands out because, of course,
- 31:41the name of the blue boy from the first color episode or first nineteen sixties
- 31:48episode of Dragnet was Benji Carver, so that was a popular surname to reuse.
- 31:55And one thing that some listeners may not get is the reference to the
- 32:00these these men not being old enough to vote and being dangerous criminals. If
- 32:09you were probably under fifty, you're used to the idea that if you're eighteen
- 32:15years old you're eligible to vote. In many places, you couldn't vote unless
- 32:22you were twenty one. However, a movement in the nineteen sixties led to
- 32:28the vote being guaranteed to everyone eighteen years or older when it was actually ratified
- 32:34in nineteen seventy one, but at the time of this program, they weren't
- 32:37old enough to vote. And one last note. When I actually mentioned on
- 32:42Facebook that I was going to play this play a television episode with Leonard Nimoy
- 32:50in it, the first suggestion I got as to what I might be playing
- 32:55was this was the television version of this episode where me Moy made one of
- 33:00the suspects. The reason I didn't choose that one is his role, and
- 33:05that was really brief. It's one of those so short you my miss it.
- 33:10Pope Roles and his appearance in Lock Up, he played a much bigger
- 33:19role even though it was a lesser known series. Now Dragonet was around long
- 33:23enough because The Big Boys was a nineteen fifty four episode when it aired on
- 33:29television that it survived for Leonard Memore to return in the show's eighth season in
- 33:36a much more significant role in an episode called The Big Name. Unfortunately,
- 33:43that episode is not a TV episode, is not in circulation. If it
- 33:47should come into circulation because it is public domain, if there are no other
- 33:52legal restrictions, we'll definitely want to play that. All right, Well,
- 33:57now, listener comments and feedback and we go to and Mimi rots in Hi
- 34:07Adam listening to your podcast at work and in my car via auxiliary cable.
- 34:14I particularly enjoy Johnny Dollar and Dragnet, but have enjoyed every show I've heard.
- 34:19I've agree that the new mic sounds really good. Keep up the good
- 34:22work. Well, thanks so much, Mimi, and we've added nothing but
- 34:27positive feedback about the new MIC. So just incredibly grateful to listener who sent
- 34:32us along. The note from Pete and Charlotte reads, thank you for the
- 34:38many hours of great radio shows, and Pat says I enjoy the Dragnet episodes
- 34:46and you're commenting, great job. Thanks so much, Pat. And finally,
- 34:52we have a question regarding the app for Chris. Question, why is
- 34:57Humphrey Bogart's picture on the front of the Detectives and I've yet to hear one
- 35:01program with him in it. I really enjoyed the programs well, thanks so
- 35:07much. In answer, well, a good question. The cover art for
- 35:15app was not actually designed by me because I have no graphic design skills.
- 35:21It was designed by the great folks at Lipson who sell and distribute the app.
- 35:29But I did approve of the art. While it definitely looks very much
- 35:35like Bogart, I've looked at it more as representative of the great detectives of
- 35:42the era that in many ways was represented by characters like Sam Spain. The
- 35:47big challenge with Humphrey Bogart is why he did some great detective roles on film,
- 35:54most of those were not adapted to radio, and he never had his
- 36:00own radio detective show. He did have Bold Venture, which we played a
- 36:05little bit of a sample of, but that's not the same thing as a
- 36:08detective show. We did bring you two episodes featuring Humphrey Bogart as well,
- 36:15Episode zero one hundred s celebrating our one hundredth episode back in early twenty ten,
- 36:23the Screenyild Theater presentation of the Maltese Falcon, and then a little bit
- 36:29more recently, back in February, episode fourteen ninety six s an episode of
- 36:36Bold Venture. So I hope that answers your question. Thanks so much for
- 36:42emailing in. Well, that will do it for today. Monday, we
- 36:46will be back with the Saints, and then on Tuesday join us for Man
- 36:52from Homicide, and then next Saturday and episode of Dragnet. In the meantime,
