- 0:00Hi everybody. Welcome back to the show.
- 0:02We are continuing our week of Starship coverage here, and
- 0:08today we got some really great information from the FAA.
- 0:12Now SpaceX is on the brink of a pivotal moment as it prepares
- 0:16for their second test flight of its Starship mega rocket, a
- 0:20crucial element in the company's ambitious space exploration
- 0:23plans. And the Federal Aviation
- 0:25Administration recently cleared SpaceX for their upcoming
- 0:29mission, setting the stage for potential launch on November
- 0:3217th from the Boca Chica Starbase facility in Texas, with
- 0:36a backup date November 18th and the 19th.
- 0:40This follows a period of intense scrutiny and required corrective
- 0:43actions after the first Test flight in April ended in the
- 0:46rocket's destruction. Now the Starship, standing at
- 0:49about 400 feet tall, represents a huge leap in rocket
- 0:54technology. It's not only central to
- 0:55Spacex's mission for future space missions, including
- 0:58potential Mars expeditions, but also for NASA's Artemis program,
- 1:02more particular Artemis 3, and this launch, if it does happen,
- 1:06will push them forward to an earlier launch date.
- 1:09For Artemis 3, however, the road to this point has been very
- 1:13challenging. The FAA demanded 63 corrective
- 1:16actions from SpaceX following their April incident, which saw
- 1:20the rocket disintegrate over the Gulf of Mexico and the
- 1:23launchpad. Damage and delayed activation of
- 1:25the self destruct mechanism during the first flight prompted
- 1:29thorough investigations and safety overhauls for the ship
- 1:33and for the ground systems. And in preparation for the
- 1:36second flight, SpaceX has implemented numerous changes
- 1:39including the construction of a water cooled steel flame
- 1:43deflector to protect the launch mount.
- 1:45Additionally, the rocket self destruct system has been refined
- 1:48for quick reactivation and a hot stage separation system has been
- 1:53introduced to ensure smoother transitions during ascent.
- 1:56Now these modifications along with the completion of
- 1:59environmental reviews suggest SpaceX is closer to meeting all
- 2:03regulatory requirements for this flight.
- 2:06And as SpaceX readies for the 2nd test flight of the Starship
- 2:09rocket, a comprehensive plan outlines every stage of this
- 2:12mission. Propellant loading will be in
- 2:14approximately one hour and 37 minutes before launch, with a
- 2:18critical engine chill phase starting at T -, 19 minutes and
- 2:2240 seconds. This procedure is crucial for
- 2:24conditioning the engines for the Super cold propellants, and in a
- 2:28change from the first flight, the ignition sequence of the
- 2:31Raptor engines will start at t -, 3 seconds, compared to the
- 2:34previous eight second countdown. This modification aims to reduce
- 2:38potential launch mount damage The following liftoff.
- 2:41The rocket will face its first major test at Max Q, the point
- 2:45of maximum aerodynamic pressure, my favorite part of the flight,
- 2:49which occurs 52 seconds into the flight.
- 2:53Another crucial moment. Miko main engine cut off will
- 2:56happen at 2 minutes and 30 seconds, marking the shutdown of
- 3:00the Raptor engine. This leads to the booster's
- 3:02boost back burn start up at 2 minutes and 53 seconds.
- 3:05Just 23 seconds later, which is a maneuver preparing it for a
- 3:09simulated landing in the Gulf of Mexico, and the Starship upper
- 3:12stage will then continue its journey, eventually splashing
- 3:16down at the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii.
- 3:19This test, however, does not include a full Earth orbit.
- 3:23Now every phase of this mission, especially the hot staging and
- 3:26RE entry maneuvers, is critical for Space XS future plans.
- 3:29The success of these stages will provide valuable insights into
- 3:32the Starship's capabilities and the limitations of the ground
- 3:36systems. The booster and Ship 25 and the
- 3:39upcoming test flight of the Starship is more than just
- 3:42another launch. The success of this mission is
- 3:44pivotal for the company's broader goals, including Mars
- 3:46missions and the role in its Artemis program with NASA and
- 3:50the Starship's power and the potential for reusability make
- 3:54it a game changer. However, the 2nd test flight
- 3:56carries its own set of challenges and uncertainties.
- 3:59Key concerns include the performance of these Raptor
- 4:01engines, the effectiveness of the hot staging process, and the
- 4:04rocket's ability to survive re entry.
- 4:07And despite the rigorous preparation and modifications,
- 4:09the possibility of unforeseen issues remains very high.
- 4:13Elon Musk has said that he gives it about a 60% chance of making
- 4:18it to the final destination. Spacex's philosophy of rapid,
- 4:21iterative development means that whatever outcomes emerge from
- 4:25this test will be crucial learning experiences.
- 4:27They're not going to fail. They're going to move forward.
- 4:29And the company has a history of leveraging such experiences to
- 4:33refine and improve its tech, as seen with its Falcon and its
- 4:36Dragon spacecraft and the Starlink satellite network.
- 4:40In essence, this test flight is not just about whether the
- 4:42Starship reaches its intended destination.
- 4:44It's about testing the limits of the ship and the ground systems
- 4:49down at Boca Chica Starbase, Texas.
- 4:52Now the FAA and the US Fish and Wildlife Service have closely
- 4:55scrutinized the environmental impact of this launch,
- 4:58particularly focusing on the new implementation of the water
- 5:01deluge system. This system, designed to protect
- 5:04the launch mount, has raised concerns about its potential
- 5:07effects on the surrounding ecosystem.
- 5:09Safety has also been a major emphasis in the preparations for
- 5:12the flight. The first tests aftermath under
- 5:14score the importance of a robust self destruct mechanism which
- 5:17has since been upgraded for quicker response.
- 5:20Furthermore, the introduction of a water cooled steel flame
- 5:23deflector is a direct response to the damage caused to the
- 5:26launch mount in April. The upcoming test will not only
- 5:29be a technical trial, but also a demonstration of how cutting
- 5:32edge space ventures can coexist with the environment and also
- 5:35the safety standards set by the FAA.
- 5:37Now the second flight of Starship holds considerable
- 5:41significance for the whole spaceflight industry.
- 5:44A successful mission would validate the feasibility of
- 5:46reusable rockets on a scale never seen before, potentially
- 5:50reducing the cost of space travel over the next 1020 years.
- 5:54Now, this aligns with Spacex's vision of making space more
- 5:57accessible and launching heavier payloads into space more
- 6:00ambitious missions, including humans colonizing Mars.
- 6:04Moreover, Starship's role in Artemis highlights its potential
- 6:08impact on governmental space missions.
- 6:10Success could revolutionize the way the government's approach
- 6:12space exploration, offering more flexible and cost effective
- 6:15solutions. And could you imagine how big of
- 6:18a telescope you could fit in this thing?
- 6:20And on the flip side, a failure could prompt a re evaluation of
- 6:23the current trajectory of space technology development.
- 6:26It would be a challenge for SpaceX to push the boundaries
- 6:29anymore. Could they get an IFT 3 flight
- 6:33to work properly if this one doesn't go well, That's in the
- 6:36future. Regardless of the outcome, the
- 6:38Starship test flight is set to leave a lasting imprint on
- 6:42SpaceX, NASA and the general public.
