- 0:02Yeah, lace them up another way. Another.
- 0:12Easy double yeah. From the track to the rodeo we
- 0:16talk that talk splits on the watch but we still take the
- 0:19Mick. Dean in Perth with the long run.
- 0:20Legs go and break the fire when the session gets thick.
- 0:23Ryan in the mix with the numbers and plans.
- 0:25From ever sauce the metals. Yeah, we.
- 0:26Break it all down. Hard graft Monday, left about a
- 0:28Sunday still. Hello and welcome back to the
- 0:32Easy Double Podcast episode 55. I'm joined as always by the two
- 0:38Co hosts. Firstly, Dean Menzies, how are
- 0:41we doing? It actually is Monday evening
- 0:43this week. It is back to normal.
- 0:47BIU not doing well, gym session in got a lift in, kids in bed
- 0:55asleep so no laughs good. You also got a run in around
- 0:59that gym. I did, yeah.
- 1:02Tom did mention those. He was impressed to see me run
- 1:06to and from the gym. So yeah, feel like I'm close to
- 1:12quite inching towards back to normal.
- 1:15I would be impressed to see you run as well if it showed up on
- 1:18my strawberry feed. Yeah, I'm about to been there.
- 1:23But anyway, I've done well. I've done well to just do what
- 1:29I'm told. I just get told what to do
- 1:31everywhere these days so. Listeners, what what are they
- 1:35doing to? Is Dean Owens private and Dean's
- 1:37private? No, I'm sharing my shit now.
- 1:40The. Whole point is the whole point
- 1:43is so that they tune into this Ryan to it's to I'm getting to
- 1:48download the episode on Spotify. Right, I like it.
- 1:52Owen, how are you doing midday over there?
- 1:55Yeah, mid over here, no doing good today was went for a little
- 1:59run. I feel like I'm a little buzz a
- 2:03baby whale trying to run now. I just feel like I've lost
- 2:05everything. My heart rate was even it's only
- 2:07been a week. I feel like my heart rate's high
- 2:09already, but umm, didn't have to wear a head torch.
- 2:13I only have to wear hives. So the mornings are getting
- 2:16really bright. And I think the arrow goes back
- 2:19now at the end of the month, so I'm not sure how that's going to
- 2:21affect recording. But yeah.
- 2:23So it'll be really bright now in the morning.
- 2:25So we're through the worst of the dark mornings, thank the
- 2:29Lord. Good.
- 2:31How was the trip? Trip was on rail and the food in
- 2:35Italy, guys, if I ever go missing, I'll be over there.
- 2:40The pizza, the pasta, the Gelato, tight tiramisu for the
- 2:43first time, unbelievable. For all for the first time,
- 2:47unbelievable. And the only thing like the one
- 2:55for a tour of the Vatican. Like first of all, you do so
- 2:58much walking in Italy, like with the thing, with the Colosseum
- 3:03thing, you get like the Colosseum tour that and then you
- 3:06can get like the Forum and this Pantene Hill.
- 3:10And we made the rookie mistake of doing the Colosseum and going
- 3:13straight to different place and you'd be walking around these
- 3:16other sites for like 5 hours and you wouldn't see everything.
- 3:18It is ginormous. And all the absolute dining
- 3:20machines. So yeah, I was pretty hungry.
- 3:24And then with the Vatican, yeah. To see all these, like,
- 3:28beautiful rooms and like all the ceilings are painted.
- 3:31And by the time you actually get to the Sistine Chapel, I feel
- 3:33like you're so desensitized and like, you're like, oh, it's just
- 3:37another painted ceiling. And like, you don't really
- 3:39appreciate that. But no, I think one day I got
- 3:43like 40,000 steps. So yeah, I was trying to burn
- 3:47off whatever I was eating because I was eating a lot.
- 3:53It's actually. Quite like, I can't remember how
- 3:56hot it was the day we went into, but the Sistine Chapel and
- 4:00looking up and by the time we went there was so packed and it
- 4:03was stinking hot. And I was like, yeah, what?
- 4:08Wasn't soaking it up like I probably thought I would in my
- 4:11mind. I think we went to a good time.
- 4:14Like you sort of start a match because like the crowds weren't
- 4:16too bad. Like, he'd go to all the
- 4:18restaurants, like you could walk around the streets comfortably.
- 4:21But like, come like July and August, like, I don't know how
- 4:24you'd even do it because like we so warm.
- 4:26You do so much walk in. And yeah, so I think match was
- 4:30like we got looking at the weather as well as like blue
- 4:32skies. It was nice.
- 4:34I remember being there the other year and it's just like the
- 4:38simple things like going for a cappuccino and a croissant on
- 4:41like the corner of the street and like some little shitty but
- 4:45on real like bakery slash coffee shop.
- 4:47None of this like Instagramable coffee shops with much of
- 4:50lattes. It's just real authentic old
- 4:53fellas behind the counter. But like it's so cheap as well.
- 4:57Like I think me and my girlfriend we got like 2 drinks
- 5:01and we've got 2 drinks like a starter and like 2 mains and was
- 5:06like 45 year old. Like it's like and all the
- 5:10coffees and pastries draws so cheap.
- 5:12Like if you go to the tourist traps, fair enough.
- 5:15You get like taken to the cleaners both you just go down
- 5:18the little side streets and uh yeah it's all authentic and
- 5:21nice. But one bad thing, like I don't
- 5:25know if if it's constantly that like smoking is like bad for you
- 5:28because every person, every Italian was smoking, young lads
- 5:32and everything, not even vaping, smoking.
- 5:35And some of the side streets, like it was really dirty and
- 5:38graffiti everywhere. And but like around like the
- 5:41main, like the Colosseum, the true fountain and all that, like
- 5:45it's spotless. But all the other like sort of
- 5:47alleys, it's filthy dirty. And yeah, so but no, it's
- 5:51definitely something ticked off the pocket list.
- 5:52I just love to do like Florence, Milan, Naples, all that sort of
- 5:57stuff now. But yeah, the food was
- 5:58incredible and blue. From a running perspective, I
- 6:03remember going on like Google Translate and just memorizing
- 6:08how to say where's the nearest toilet in Italian.
- 6:13Oh my God, they don't have many public ones, do they?
- 6:17No. Well, certainly not compared to
- 6:19Australia. It's a disaster actually to run
- 6:23in. There's too many traffic lights.
- 6:24It's not ideal at all. There's one like Big Park, can't
- 6:30remember what it's called. It's like kind of in the city as
- 6:35well. Yeah, I wasn't near and I was
- 6:37going to run up beside I think it's called the study Olympic or
- 6:40something wrong. I play there.
- 6:42It was like an athletics track would load like umm like columns
- 6:48and like and sculpture as a man. But it's like dedicated to
- 6:51Mussolini and and it was like 7.2 K or 7.4 K away from where I
- 6:58was saying. So it's like right at the top of
- 6:59the city and I was going to jog up there one of the days.
- 7:05But like by the time you actually get up there, like do
- 7:09all the traffic lights, all them start and stops, like it nearly
- 7:12take you like over an hour. And I wasn't meant to be
- 7:14resting. So I get up and I'll have the
- 7:16runners on. I stepped at the door and I was
- 7:18like on my phone for like 10 minutes contemplating like, will
- 7:21I do this? And I was like, Nope.
- 7:23So I should go back into bed? That's good, made the right
- 7:27decision whilst on holiday. That Cal Nelson interview
- 7:32dropped last week. Well Owen, I don't think you
- 7:36would listen back to it because you were on it, you're part of
- 7:38it. But Dean, you tuned in.
- 7:41I did, yeah. No, he really enjoyed it.
- 7:43He speaks well and was very happy to sort of.
- 7:49I didn't, I don't know. I didn't quite expect.
- 7:52I expected more, more running chat.
- 7:55I didn't, which I enjoyed, but I didn't expect just quite how or
- 8:01appreciate just quite how business savvy he is just in
- 8:04terms of his background and how deliberate he was with some of
- 8:08his choices to to sort of build the brand and the businesses
- 8:11that he has and how he's managed his channel or channels.
- 8:15And I don't, yeah, I mean real really easy guy to listen to and
- 8:20yeah, really interesting story. How do you guys find the
- 8:23conversation? You have like literally no idea
- 8:27that like what they're going to say before they come on.
- 8:30And then you, you come away from these conversations like with
- 8:34like a full blown picture of like now you're looking at them
- 8:36a bit differently, like entrepreneurial and very
- 8:39switched on and very deliberate and everything he's doing in his
- 8:42social space. So it's, it's interesting to
- 8:45have the conversations, isn't it?
- 8:48Yeah. And I feel like, you know, guys
- 8:52like Jake Barraclough and Callum, like you see their
- 8:57success, but you don't. You're not sure if it's a bit
- 9:02right place at the right time. But then you once you start to
- 9:05pop the hood, you appreciate it's all.
- 9:08There's a lot of thought and effort that goes in behind it to
- 9:11make it what it is. I thought it was funny the way
- 9:14you said about like hate watching, so like watching or
- 9:20consuming content because you get annoyed by it or because you
- 9:24don't like it, but you can't physically like not do it.
- 9:28And I could relate so much to it.
- 9:30Like I won't obviously name any names, but I literally I've have
- 9:34put things on and then like got that annoyed and then like, oh,
- 9:37fuck this. Like when we're listening to
- 9:39this and I just can't bring myself to like press pause and
- 9:42go off it. I just have to see it through.
- 9:44It's so annoying. There's probably people
- 9:46listening to me saying this now thinking the same.
- 9:50About us. Yeah, exactly.
- 9:53I think, yeah, I mean, it was a really good insight.
- 9:55It's basically saying some of these influencers do that part
- 9:58of it really well. They put out some controversial
- 10:00content to get a reaction and it does.
- 10:03And it grows their platform and they and they can, if they're
- 10:07thick skinned enough, then they're not personally affected
- 10:09by it. So they just play it really
- 10:10well. And then there's the the ones
- 10:14who play the victim on the back of it.
- 10:16And then that just kind of like makes their actual followers and
- 10:20supporters even more loyal. Yeah.
- 10:24That's an interesting game the shop run.
- 10:29Shop run. So I want, I don't know, I think
- 10:35I did read somewhere about Owen perhaps getting face timed into
- 10:38this. But for those in Perth, we will
- 10:42be hosting a We Easy Double will be partnering alongside the
- 10:47running Centre and Puma for a a wear test and a run from their
- 10:53shop on High Street in Perth this coming Wednesday.
- 11:01Is it 530 kick off run? I think yeah, 5:30 arrival for a
- 11:06545 stars, but usually Raft does all the housekeeping, giveaway
- 11:13promotion type stuff from 5:30. So yeah, you don't want to
- 11:17arrive at 5:45. Really.
- 11:19Is there any way we can make this like virtual, so like Kuma
- 11:22can like send shoes to Ireland? I can try them on.
- 11:25I'm like, I swear I'll send them back, I promise.
- 11:31We'll ask. I'm sure Ryan won't mind asking,
- 11:34so we'll see how we're going. We.
- 11:39I just said this is Yeah, go on. On on the story I shared, I said
- 11:44we'll try and FaceTime Owen and the run centre replied saying
- 11:49yeah, let's get them online. So I don't know if you'll be
- 11:51available. Around what time's that going to
- 11:55be? 9:30 AM on Wednesday?
- 11:59I'll be working. Yeah, yeah.
- 12:04They now they're pretty good. They're good.
- 12:06These collabs, like I mean, credit to Raff and the running
- 12:09centre for putting them on. I think we might have spoken
- 12:12about it a little bit. But so I think the shoes that
- 12:15are for us to test and they're not Troy Fours and the Deviate
- 12:19Nitro Elite 3. So they're both shoes I'm
- 12:24interested in putting on my feet and giving a go.
- 12:26And right what we did one what was it last week with on trying
- 12:31on the the cloud monster, the latest version of the cloud
- 12:36Monster? And was it the cloud monster
- 12:37hyper? Was it or was?
- 12:39Yeah. So yeah, getting getting them to
- 12:42test. We've done that with a few of
- 12:44the ASICS, like the first time I tried the mega blast.
- 12:47So I feel like it's good that you get to put these shoes on
- 12:49your feet because some of them do get different.
- 12:52I'm so jealous of you guys. I get to try them because you
- 12:55see all like Instagram and all and you see all these releases,
- 12:59but like you actually don't know how they feel.
- 13:01And I feel like even hear about the new Super Blast 3.
- 13:04It's like totally different than Super Blast 2.
- 13:06So like you really want to try on these shoes and the fact that
- 13:09the running centre are putting on these like for Anne and Puma.
- 13:13Yeah, I am so, so jealous. You just get to try all these
- 13:15and it's such a good big initiative.
- 13:18Yeah, because, you know, they're generally good if a lot of
- 13:20people are talking about them, but they do feel different and
- 13:23like each version are getting quite different.
- 13:25Like they are putting some decent updates in some of these
- 13:28shoes. So you definitely want to find
- 13:29out because some of them do go backwards and other ones come
- 13:32forwards. And we're probably talking about
- 13:36this a bit, Ryan, but like we have, it's not like a three shoe
- 13:40rotation like Raff was talking about this.
- 13:42But let's say 10-15 years ago, you would have maybe a daily
- 13:46trainer, a workout shoe and a race day shoe, whereas we're
- 13:50talking at probably at least double that in terms of the type
- 13:53of footwear we're rotating through now.
- 13:55And so given you're spending a bit of money on all these
- 13:59different shoes and you want to, you then want them to last a
- 14:01bit, you want to make sure you when you're forking out 300
- 14:04bucks, you're getting the right ones.
- 14:06It's fun though. I don't know at what point I've
- 14:08been influenced or my mind has shifted, but I do distinctly
- 14:12remember in the not too distant past I would have only like just
- 14:18been particular about wearing certain brands and stuff.
- 14:21Whereas now I'm finding myself like wearing all these different
- 14:25like a variety of brands. So like the on one was good
- 14:29because I think the global release is actually today, 9th
- 14:32of March of those cloud monsters and the hypers maybe on until
- 14:36next week. So you're literally getting to
- 14:37try them on before they're even out and available to the public
- 14:41as well. So it's pretty good.
- 14:43And like thanks to Liam is the the sales Rep WA based.
- 14:47He's a good guy. He's managed to sort me out with
- 14:52a pair accidentally between the run centre and on the Nadine.
- 14:57Yeah, it seemed a bit suspicious.
- 15:00I think there was a giveaway and somehow Ryan's name got pulled
- 15:05out of the hat and and they did get pulled out.
- 15:08Was it just after you made a comment about how you liked one
- 15:10more than the other and the giveaway ones were the ones you
- 15:13didn't like as much? Yeah, that was unfortunate.
- 15:16So, so they had the cloud monster there on the table and
- 15:19the hyper and he was explaining how like the hyper is a bit of a
- 15:23super trainer, whereas the cloud monsters more like stable and
- 15:28typical type thing. And I was like, oh, So what
- 15:31would when you say that I automatically am choosing the
- 15:35hyper because it's called the Super trainer.
- 15:37So like what would actually incentivize me to get the other
- 15:40one? And the one that they were
- 15:42giving away was the just the basic entry level cloud monster.
- 15:46And then two minutes late A pulled my name out of the hat.
- 15:49So I felt quite bad. Proceeded to then ask for a pair
- 15:53of the better shoes but. Said Can I pay the difference to
- 15:58get the hypers? I would have went for the
- 16:03monsters. Yeah, the.
- 16:05Monsters have such a good Rep, right?
- 16:07They're the original shoe that really took off on in terms of
- 16:10mainstream shoes. I don't think you can go too far
- 16:14wrong with either of them. And they're both in that for me,
- 16:17they sort of sit alongside that Super Blast, Mega Blast, like a
- 16:21Super Blast is a fun shoe to run in.
- 16:24And then if you want something even a bit speedier in terms of
- 16:26the foam and bit, maybe a bit lighter, then you, you can go
- 16:30quicker again. But, and I guess talking about,
- 16:34remember Tim speaking about the mega blast on the London's
- 16:39Calling series and about it's just so good that you actually
- 16:42find yourself almost getting to the point where you're turning
- 16:46it into your your long runs into workouts because you're covering
- 16:49the ground so well. So maybe that's a reason to to
- 16:53go the monster over the hyper anyway.
- 16:59But yes, that's what's on on Wednesday.
- 17:03I will actually just quickly on that, we'll have a couple of
- 17:07caps to give away and also some HBF entries as well, some free
- 17:12entries for people. So that's the easy double
- 17:15contribution. So yeah, be good to see anyone
- 17:17down there. How long is HBF?
- 17:21What race is that? 12 or 21 case that there's a 4K
- 17:28as well but it's in the middle of May.
- 17:32But I would say it's the the the biggest participated event on
- 17:40the WA running calendar. I would I would expect so.
- 17:43I used to be in the city to surf, but the HBS overtaken it
- 17:48and then it they close off the roads, goes through the freeway,
- 17:52fast courses, finishes inside Gloucester Park, the trotting
- 17:55track which is next to the Wacker.
- 17:59But yeah, good, then wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 18:01That was very Australian. It finishes next to the track
- 18:06beside the Wacker, the trotting track across the park.
- 18:11So like a horse racing place? Yeah.
- 18:15So, you know, like gallops, like where you just sit on the back
- 18:17of the horse and you whip it. Yeah.
- 18:19And then trots, trots. You sit in like a little
- 18:22carriage and. Yeah.
- 18:24You get the. Carriage, you know?
- 18:26Yeah. You never, you never went to the
- 18:29trots while you're here. Didn't you stay in store or
- 18:33something? It would have been big out
- 18:34there, yeah. Loads of horses, but yeah, I
- 18:37just ran trails and it worked. But it's a trotting tracks 800
- 18:44meters around and it's on this like like this fine blue metal
- 18:51sort of surface. Oh.
- 18:53I know that's the one with it. They have the bizarre carriage
- 18:56hanging off the back of it and like, that's for the the rarely,
- 19:02like anyone who's betting on that, like you, you've really
- 19:05clutching at straws there, aren't you?
- 19:08I'll bring you along on a Friday night.
- 19:12It's an experience. Got to try everything once.
- 19:19That's it. Yeah, so and just we had a fair
- 19:24few interviews over the last couple of a couple of weeks with
- 19:31was a Callum Elson, we had the series dropping Jeff Stenson.
- 19:35And yeah, we just appreciate if everyone could like give us a
- 19:39follow on whatever streaming platform they use, hit the like
- 19:43button, turn on notification so you get notification so you get
- 19:48notified when all these interviews drops because it
- 19:50helps us out and helps you guys out because you get
- 19:52notifications when these interviews and we've got so much
- 19:55planned in the pipeline. So yeah, keep that up.
- 19:59And like last week, I think we were in like the top 10 running
- 20:02podcasts in Australia and Ireland and like 12 in the UK.
- 20:05So yeah, just. Thank everyone for tuning in.
- 20:10And we're only a year in and hopefully we're at this this
- 20:13time next year. And but yeah, if you want to get
- 20:15in touch, you can text us on Instagram or e-mail
- 20:19easydoublepod@gmail.com. You can do a hate listen and
- 20:25e-mail us about that, or you can help us improve the podcast.
- 20:30But yeah, engagement is is good. And so we're sort of after.
- 20:33So yeah, just thanks everyone for tuning in.
- 20:36It's been fun recently. Someone actually sent me that,
- 20:40you know, Kohl is running Cole Gibbons that he shared on his
- 20:45one of his stronger activities, like listening to the easy
- 20:47double series. And like he's gone out of his
- 20:51own way to do that. Like that's a legendary way of
- 20:54sharing the pod really and a very suitable environment to do
- 20:58it on Strava. So cheers to Cole and maybe we
- 21:01could chat to him because he's doing London and, well, we'll
- 21:04get to it later. He had raced, I think it was
- 21:08last weekend he done 1/2 marathon and he on them, not a
- 21:11fast course and run like 64 mid or something like that.
- 21:15And so yeah, he's in good form. So I'd love to umm have a chat
- 21:19with him and his build off because he seems to be going
- 21:21well. He just he does ridiculous high
- 21:23mileage as well. He actually good YouTube.
- 21:26He he's releasing weekly episodes now in the build up to
- 21:28London Bush. Umm, yeah, he does like 250
- 21:31kilometers a week, 265 meters a week.
- 21:33So, umm, to do a six to four and a half off star is, umm, yeah,
- 21:37pretty good. It's at the end of the agenda
- 21:41with races coming up next weekend, but he's also in the
- 21:44bath. He's on the Bath half marathon
- 21:47start list next weekend, which is ridiculously stacked.
- 21:50Is there a stream for that? I really hope there is.
- 21:53Hopefully, yeah. So, Alfie, Mount OPS running
- 21:58Jake. Yeah, it's gonna be so loud.
- 22:02And last little nod, we're recording episode 2 of London
- 22:05Colon this week. Where Jake Barclough obviously
- 22:09race Tokyo since last time we spoke to him, so we'll unpack
- 22:13that and what else he's been up to.
- 22:15Tim's just ran 1/2 marathon PB over the weekend and Jake Smith
- 22:19is on the Bath half start list this weekend coming which is
- 22:23Dublin as the Road Running Championships qualifier.
- 22:26So I'm sure it will be a very, very juicy episode.
- 22:31If anyone's got any questions, see how I can squeeze them in.
- 22:36But yeah, just flick them into the dams and we'll try and get
- 22:38through a few this episode. Then we've got some results to
- 22:44cover off from 1/2 marathon in Lisbon where the world record
- 22:48went down. Controversially, not
- 22:49controversially, we'll get into it.
- 22:52Box Hill Classic happened over in Victoria.
- 22:55Claudia Hollingsworth doubling down on a ridiculous form.
- 22:59And as I mentioned, Tim Vincent ran 1/2 marathon, which is
- 23:03called Bashir's Half. Ironically, Bashir update was in
- 23:06the field. Liam Boudham was there too from
- 23:09Australia and there was a few Aussies over in Nagoya, so we'll
- 23:13get into that. Some more news, follow up on
- 23:17them USA Half Marathon Championship controversy from
- 23:21last weekend. And yeah, The Ethiopians are
- 23:25back in the limelight for one reason or another.
- 23:29So let's get into it then. The Lisbon Half Marathon,
- 23:33ironically, I don't know what the sponsor actually is, but the
- 23:37actual title of it is the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon.
- 23:42So whether we can try and attach ourselves to that easy Double
- 23:47podcast Lisbon Half Marathon or not, I don't know.
- 23:52I thought you're going to say a different thing.
- 23:57Yeah. Yeah, listeners, they'll figure
- 24:02that one out for themselves. And if anyone does follow,
- 24:05follow the Instagram, they would have seen the story that we
- 24:08shared last night just acknowledging who Kaplimo's
- 24:12agent was. Anyway, so the results went as
- 24:16follows. Jacob, Jacob.
- 24:18Jacob Kaplimo won the race in 5720, which takes 10 seconds off
- 24:27Yarmouth Kajalche's 5730 world record.
- 24:31It's a little bit slower than the time that he actually ran
- 24:35himself last year in Barcelona, where he ran the world record,
- 24:39but that within the past couple of weeks, ironically was not
- 24:43ratified. So it looks like Kaplino's gone.
- 24:47Oh, you won't. You don't give me one world
- 24:49record. OK, I'll just go and do it
- 24:51again. And he was followed home by Kent
- 24:562 Kenyans. Nicholas kept Korea in 58 O 8,
- 24:59which is insanely fast in itself.
- 25:01And Gilbert Kip Cosguy Kiprotich 5859.
- 25:07They're the notable males that I can see from the top ten, but
- 25:11the top ten only goes down to an hour and 34 seconds, which is
- 25:16bloody deep. The women's race was won by
- 25:18Sigai Gabra Salima from Ethiopia 6448, which for contacts puts a
- 25:24somewhere around 20th fastest all time, so it's rather fast.
- 25:29Janet Chapman Gethitch of Kenya 6650 and Regina Wambui of Kenya
- 25:346710. Obviously the main talking point
- 25:39being Kiplimo breaking the world record when he did, how he did
- 25:45and everything that goes with it.
- 25:47So yeah, over to you boys. Any initial thoughts?
- 25:52I just don't like this a lot. Did you see when he crossed the
- 25:56line, he literally jumped homes. Not out of breath at all.
- 25:59Barely broke a sweat. It's just like, at least look
- 26:04tired. It just.
- 26:06Yeah, I'd I. Just want to see that are still
- 26:11in his tendons at that point. He's absolutely flying around
- 26:14the place, isn't he? He could hold, looks like he
- 26:17could run that forever. Like was that 243 kilometer,
- 26:20247, something like that? Which is scary given he's he's
- 26:25on the London start list as well.
- 26:26So he's he's got the potential to show that he can hold it
- 26:30forever there. So he went through 5K, he went
- 26:34through 5K and 1328, and he went through 10K in 27 flat.
- 26:40Like, yeah. And yeah, I mean, there was no
- 26:47pace car helping him this time, but was there many?
- 26:50I don't know if there was much by way of support was there?
- 26:53There was 0 pacemakers. Yeah, which like I know when.
- 27:00So 27 flat is about what Australian record pace, it
- 27:03probably is around British record pace thereabouts.
- 27:06And in a lot of those races you've got pacing lights and a
- 27:09tail of people to follow. So yeah, quite phenomenal.
- 27:13I'm just looking now on World Athletics from a European point
- 27:17of view as a 10K road race ever. There's only Jan Schrub, the
- 27:23French guy from the other week, Andres Olmgren and Dominic
- 27:27Lebarlu, who've broken 27 minutes.
- 27:30Three men in history and he's just split it halfway.
- 27:34And I know those times all got, you know, as part of this new
- 27:37ratification for road running, like a lot of the old times got
- 27:42he raised. But like, yeah, I mean, what's
- 27:45the British record? 20 on the road. 37 Yeah, he's,
- 27:52he's a good 38 seconds up the road on him.
- 27:57Jack Rainer's like 2709, yeah, something like that.
- 28:01Yeah, the guys, he does this back-to-back, he does it
- 28:05back-to-back. He doesn't want.
- 28:07The guys are doing it high. You just don't like it at all.
- 28:11With 0 pacemakers, the mad but like it is almost like it's a
- 28:19bit of a nephew from him to World Athletics because they've
- 28:22said you can't have this world record because you've been
- 28:25drafted on the back of a car. And he said, OK, I'll do the
- 28:28whole race without any single human pacemaker, let alone a car
- 28:32pacing me. It's just I did.
- 28:35I hate the reaction at the end. Like when he crossed the line,
- 28:38he jumped into someone. He jumping around like he didn't
- 28:42look tired whatsoever nearly is unbelievable.
- 28:47The time in itself is a bit of a red flag because it's he's only
- 28:5410 seconds faster than Kajalja. But Kajalja's time is accepted I
- 28:58think as no one really doubts him for what he's achieved and
- 29:04that being illegitimate. But Kaplimo, because of the
- 29:07controversy of his bloody car race, there's so many red flags
- 29:11and the main one being who he's associated with from a
- 29:15management or agent perspective, which is Doctor Federico Rosa.
- 29:23Ryan is Mia, but yeah, his agent is that fucking Ross, a guy from
- 29:29Frederico Rossa who is associated with how many 1/2?
- 29:36Nine people who have been popped.
- 29:39Umm, yeah. He has got a history of drug
- 29:46athletes and like one of them Ruch Epigenetics, the female
- 29:52marathon record holder who where I don't know how she still has
- 29:56that umm, but she got called for a masking agent.
- 30:00Umm, yeah. She just, he just has so many
- 30:03athletes that have been popped. It just does not look good from
- 30:07the outside from Cablimo. And I hope, I hope and pray he's
- 30:10clean. Just for running for Sam.
- 30:14Yeah, I think if you're just not into running and you're just
- 30:18seeing this, you'd be like, well, he's definitely doing
- 30:20something. It'd be it's interesting that he
- 30:24chooses to associate with that agent given, you know, the
- 30:30reputation he's has, right? You would think at what point
- 30:36does a like where there's an agent that has a not a great
- 30:40track record become a point like it was the same with like some
- 30:43of those you remember, like the Bauman project when people
- 30:46started to disassociate because of the reputation of the club.
- 30:49You'd think at some point that people would start removing
- 30:55themselves from from his keeping, particularly someone
- 30:59like him who's well established and would be already well looked
- 31:02after financially. Would it need the the agent to
- 31:05get them into races? It's strange that they maintain
- 31:07that relationship, at least from the outside.
- 31:13Yeah, and I don't like they're just, they're so good at dope.
- 31:21Covering it up now. Like, you just don't really know
- 31:25anymore. And like, the good ones don't
- 31:31cut. It's only the idiots that do get
- 31:32caught. So yeah.
- 31:37Oh, there are people on his. And this is your one, Beatrice
- 31:40to bet she's also under. Yeah.
- 31:46No way. There you go.
- 31:50Are you hope for? Are you afraid to keep the eye
- 31:52gone or Beatrice to bet then? Yeah, well I do like both of
- 31:59them, but I wouldn't support either.
- 32:02There you go. I'd keep.
- 32:03Yeah, we don't. Shall we move on to.
- 32:07We've lost Ron with some technical difficulties it.
- 32:10Was just an episode that. Yeah, it's not unusual, but
- 32:15shall I move us on to the Nagoya Women's Marathon?
- 32:19Yeah, go for it. We've got a few talking points
- 32:21here. So easy about Doyle.
- 32:23Former guest was on pacing duties and I saw some footage.
- 32:27Do you see the footage on her Instagram of her leading the
- 32:30lead women's pack? No, so she took the the the
- 32:34women's pack through at 320 pace.
- 32:37So she did 25K's of that and she's I think looking to go to
- 32:43Boston and later in the in April and notable performance.
- 32:49So the race was pretty close. I think there was a the winner
- 32:52was around that 221 pace through to Jen Gregson, who was eighth
- 32:57and I didn't see her in that lead pack.
- 32:58So I wonder if she chose to to run her her own tempo.
- 33:03But she was 8th in 225 O 6 definitely in contention in that
- 33:09top top ten. We're all, you know, a minute or
- 33:12so between a lot of them. So or less so yeah, her I think
- 33:18I would imagine would be a she would be quite happy with that.
- 33:21I mean, not too far off her PB that she ran to qualify for the
- 33:25Olympics, right. And you know, that build, that
- 33:29progression since giving birth to her second child.
- 33:32Like that seems like a very solid run, 225 low.
- 33:38And I think those those women races, like it doesn't look like
- 33:41it's after it doesn't it doesn't look like it quite stacks up to
- 33:45Valencia, albeit I think we've spoken about this before in
- 33:48terms of time zone and travel logistics and certainly simpler,
- 33:52A simpler exercise. And the Japanese races are so
- 33:55expertly run that I would imagine you get the most out of
- 33:59yourself, but you're perhaps giving up maybe a minute or so
- 34:03to to the Creme de la Creme of a course like Valencia.
- 34:07So yeah, very solid run, I thought.
- 34:09I'm sure that's the one where doesn't easy say that like pound
- 34:13for pound is her like best performance as well like 223 mid
- 34:18or something there like because it's not the fastest deepest
- 34:22type thing. Yeah, and it just turns into a
- 34:24race at some point, like you, just because it's not, you don't
- 34:28have men, a pack of men to sit in to race the whole way for 42
- 34:32KS. You haven't got that dense
- 34:33field. It's a like you can see those
- 34:36top ten women all spread out over 5 or so minutes by the end.
- 34:40So you can imagine the race gets tough at some point.
- 34:42So pacemakers, they're women pacemakers will step off.
- 34:45So yeah. And and I think the courses like
- 34:49it's not Valencia, it's a little bit one-of-a-kind in terms of
- 34:52just how well, how, how great it is.
- 34:54I suspect there's probably a couple more turns or U turns.
- 34:57So to run 225, I think it's a very good run.
- 35:03And then I didn't catch this, but yeah, Brett Robinson was
- 35:06there and he won 1/2 marathon and it looked like it was a
- 35:14fairly, was it a fairly comfy, comfy win for for Brett Ryan,
- 35:19did you have have this covered? Yeah, I couldn't find like the
- 35:22actual result anywhere, as seen on a Strava that he won.
- 35:26It was a different race. Bizarrely, it was in Nagoya, but
- 35:29it was, it was called Nagoya City Half.
- 35:32So like it wasn't attached to the the women's marathon.
- 35:36I think he ran like 63 dead maybe or low and I was clicked
- 35:44into like the straw file on it. And this is where I'm
- 35:46determining it was a comfy one because I was amazed that I mean
- 35:50he's, he's so fit. So it shouldn't really amaze me.
- 35:53But still, when you see heart rates on paper, like his heart
- 35:57rate was 157 after splitting the first 5K and 15-O, and then
- 36:03after 10K going through sub 30 in 2951, his heart rate was
- 36:08still only 163. So off the paces there, it's
- 36:12kind of like 3 minute per K average, 259, whatever.
- 36:16And that was kind of like how it went until the last K and he
- 36:19just ran a 251. And then I think the last like
- 36:23.2 was 240 odd K pace. So looks as though he's just ran
- 36:29with whoever was running whatever pace at the front and
- 36:33then kind of finished it off. I would suspect he's probably
- 36:38quite fit given his is running very well domestically over
- 36:43shorter races and likely targeting something longer, so
- 36:47it's exciting I. Wonder what he's like gearing
- 36:49off for? Yeah, I don't know, I've got a
- 36:56line of sight, but yeah, it's exciting to watch school when
- 36:58people are fit. He actually only does Lonnie.
- 37:01He might do Lonnie half or something like that.
- 37:05He normally does that one. It's nice that he's taken the
- 37:07different approach, like step back from the whole London,
- 37:12well, Valencia, London cycle and he could still end up going to
- 37:15Valencia later in the year. But I mean, I don't know if you
- 37:19have you seen that podcast, Paula's Run Club, a tear and
- 37:23Chris Thompson, you know, the vast British marathoner.
- 37:28They've got like, sorry, they've got like a casual podcast.
- 37:33They're like doing kind of like training series tips for casual
- 37:37runners built to London Marathon.
- 37:40And they actually had Callum Hawkins on the other week.
- 37:42And if you haven't listened to it, Dean, you'd really enjoy it
- 37:45because he speaks about Gold Coast and how we failed to
- 37:50struggle with the heat that day and kind of why.
- 37:53But you're. Not ready to hear it?
- 37:55You're more traumatized than he is.
- 37:58Honestly one of the worst days of my life.
- 38:01At the end Paula says to him like, so what's next?
- 38:04And he says, oh, I might be going back down on then try and
- 38:09run past that bench that I had to keep on last time I seen it.
- 38:13So I think he's going going to Goldie.
- 38:15Imagine. We had a few keeps in that last
- 38:17couple of KS bench the bridge. Sounds like a tough day out, but
- 38:27yeah, he's coming back to Australia.
- 38:29Gold Coast. It's cool.
- 38:31That's exciting. Makes me want to be there.
- 38:32Yeah, I know you'll be. You'll be flying the flag phase.
- 38:36You double at the COM games around that time, will you?
- 38:38That's following month. Later that month but I would I
- 38:43will still be in Australia for Gold Coast.
- 38:47Did float the idea to you? We'll we'll revisit.
- 38:50Yeah, you do try and dangle that, Karen.
- 38:53Speaking of, are we going to get into weekly recaps?
- 38:58Whenever, if we can do if you want.
- 39:03No, you have to wait. Be patient.
- 39:08So that's Nagoya covered. The next result was from I think
- 39:13it's in Belgium runners Lab Bashir's run was 1/2 marathon
- 39:17over there. Seen a few photos that if you've
- 39:19seen them, the conditions look unreal.
- 39:22You know, you like, you just know what those mornings feel
- 39:25like where it's like a bit foggy and misty, but like so still,
- 39:31it's just like perfect conditions to run fast.
- 39:35And Tim Vincent's from London Colon was there.
- 39:40He ran. Oh shit I haven't even got the
- 39:43times on here. No do Tim.
- 39:47Tim ran 6117. He was finished in 7th place,
- 39:52one place behind teammate Liam Boudin. 61 O 8 rapid times for
- 39:57those two from an Australian perspective.
- 40:00And then Bashir won the race himself in a Belgian national
- 40:03record 5928, so really quick. And he's 37 by the way.
- 40:08And he's saying, I've seen him in his interview saying Bashir
- 40:11is back. So there we go.
- 40:15I don't know why every time there's a guy or woman who's in
- 40:18the late 30s, we have to try and give you a renewed sense of
- 40:22confidence. But I'll try and stop doing it.
- 40:25That's good. Did I tell you ref did it to me
- 40:28on Thursday night? What was he saying?
- 40:32Running around with So I did a workout with two two guys, one
- 40:38of them. Oh, he's seen this, Luke.
- 40:40This is good. And he's running around.
- 40:45Dina, how old are you? No, I'm 38-O.
- 40:49All right, no worries. Not 37.
- 40:52No, 38 would have been good if you're 37, because I think Luke,
- 40:58Luke's 27. And then the, the young fella
- 41:01that we're running was 17. So he's I was trying to build a
- 41:04bit of a story there, but that's OK, we'll go with that 38 fair.
- 41:09Enough plays into your hands even more at least.
- 41:12Well, yeah, one's 21 years younger than me.
- 41:15There you go. Yeah, the three generations.
- 41:21That's how it's making me sound like a granddad.
- 41:26But your medium. Aden was complimenting your
- 41:29haircut in it in the video. You're looking sharp.
- 41:33She commenting on the bold spot at the back?
- 41:35Probably, but no. He looks fast.
- 41:40I had got a haircut, so I appreciate that.
- 41:42Aden. I think not that house would
- 41:44have noticed, but I'm glad someone did.
- 41:47How much you pay for your haircut by the way, whilst we're
- 41:49on this. 35 bucks I think it is. Yeah, see I.
- 41:55London. London Court.
- 41:57Is it the Chilean fella? No.
- 42:01Actually, I've said the wrong line.
- 42:04I don't know. I've been going to the same
- 42:05place for 10 years, but it's it's Bob's, Bob's something in
- 42:08the city. Mind it there during lunch.
- 42:11Trinity Arcade No. Could be, actually, it's one of
- 42:15the arcades. I know what you're talking
- 42:17about. You're further down the city
- 42:18though. OK, Yeah.
- 42:20But would you, would you you stamp up the same amount?
- 42:22I don't know if this is podcast. Well I'll quickly say it.
- 42:27Mine's 38 but I am changed because I was paying like 55 and
- 42:32I was telling my mate I changed because I was paying 55.
- 42:35Pretty expensive and he's like now that's cheap mate.
- 42:38I don't know where he gets his haircut.
- 42:40He pays more than 55 bucks. He thinks 55 is cheap.
- 42:44What's he like getting a colour put through?
- 42:48That is crazy, yeah. I know, how many euros are you
- 42:52paying? I pay 25 so I don't know what
- 42:57that conversion is. How does he?
- 43:0240 something. Yeah, all.
- 43:06Right back to the running then. These times make sense, so you
- 43:10see the 5K splits next to everyone's times.
- 43:13You can comprehend that, right? Yeah, great runs from those two
- 43:18in the in the marathon build. We'll chat to him about it later
- 43:21in the week, but I'm going to assume that there wasn't that
- 43:24much of A taper into this. But what I mean is Bashir Abdi
- 43:29is an Olympic medallist in the marathon and he's 5K split on
- 43:34average was 1424, not 1328. Like, yet nearly a minute in the
- 43:39difference. Ambassador Abdi is a good
- 43:40runner. Like it's like one of the best.
- 43:44He's a is he a multiple time global medalist?
- 43:47Perhaps, but like he's, he's legit, right?
- 43:52Like he's like. Surely altitude can't make that
- 43:56much of a different Like it's probably a stupid point, but I
- 44:00just can't. It can't be a minute better
- 44:03over. 35K split of 1/2 marathon race.
- 44:10Yeah, that's wild to run a national record as well.
- 44:17My haircut is 4436 AOD so I actually might start shopping
- 44:22around. Start shopping around next
- 44:29results come from a little bit closer to AUS.
- 44:33Over in Melbourne there was a Box Hill classic, Claudia
- 44:36Hollingsworth 358 in a 1500 meters solo.
- 44:40She won by 24 seconds and that Ruby SME was in the field as
- 44:45well, who's like a pretty solid domestic runner, and she's won
- 44:48by 24 seconds. I'm not sure what the pacemaking
- 44:53situation was, whether she had someone for a while, but on the
- 44:56footage of scene, she's just finishing it off solo.
- 44:59But like 358, that's a legit global 1500 meter time.
- 45:05So she's like really levelling up this year.
- 45:09Yeah, well, didn't I thought I saw something quickly about
- 45:12like, what was it all time? Was he all time?
- 45:15Was that up there? I think, yeah, because he did
- 45:18that solo in the first crack. Jess has run like 53 I think or
- 45:26something 54. But still to be in the the same
- 45:31remit as because Jess is multiple world medalist isn't
- 45:35she? Yeah, I mean Sarah Jamison who's
- 45:40Perth based coach nowadays, but went to uni in there, one of the
- 45:48universities, I don't know if it was like Providence University,
- 45:52she was the Australian record holder and that was over 4
- 45:54minutes at that time. She a third all time Claudia for
- 45:59Australia. Yeah.
- 46:01Behind only Jess and Lyndon. Yeah.
- 46:04And so like I remember, was it Lyndon was the first one to go
- 46:06under 4 minutes. So it was not that.
- 46:08I don't know if it was around COVID time or something.
- 46:10So yeah, it's pretty remarkable to do that.
- 46:16She was pretty solid. She's more of an 800 meter as a
- 46:19typical distance, or has been. Yeah, but did you see her in the
- 46:23interview post the the Win and the 3K mentioned that her focus
- 46:29this year will be the 1500? Yes, she said.
- 46:33Yeah, she she said. She won't say what she's doing,
- 46:36but just that that might be the event that she's focusing on.
- 46:41Well, yeah, because then when you look at this list of other
- 46:44fast Australian women over the 1500s, you've got Georgie
- 46:48Griffith, but she leans more towards the distance maybe than
- 46:521500 Sarah Billins. She's more of the 800.
- 46:57Abbey Caldwell moved the 800. And then, yeah, Claudia comes in
- 47:01first crack of the weapon goes ahead of them all.
- 47:03So why not when you've only got Jess and Lyndon ahead of you?
- 47:07Lyndon not going to be around forever.
- 47:10Jess isn't going to race every single race.
- 47:14So good opportunity. Oh, Tommy Moorcroft was there as
- 47:18well. Third week in a row he's getting
- 47:21a shout out. Boys in form.
- 47:24He's in Form 343 and I think he's, I think he might have tied
- 47:29his PB to the 100th of a second. So how's that?
- 47:34Won the race as well. Yeah.
- 47:37So look, I mean, he's in form that that Melbourne water,
- 47:41something in it. Was that an A race or AB racer?
- 47:45What was it? That was the A yeah.
- 47:51I think Luke Shaw was in it maybe as well.
- 47:55Is that everything from Box Hill?
- 47:57Yes, Sir. Right over to the Emerald Isle
- 48:02now there was a big half marathon pretty close to pretty
- 48:05close to me in Mead. So it's called the ball or mean
- 48:08half marathon. That's probably one of the
- 48:09fastest and biggest half marathons in Ireland and it was
- 48:15won by on the male side by Hugh Armstrong who ran a 6423.
- 48:20He's of double track club and he is like he's a pretty good
- 48:23runner. He's building up for Hamburg or
- 48:25Dusseldorf, one of them German marathons.
- 48:28And second was Brian O'kelly in 67-O2 and 3rd was James Hyland
- 48:34and 6741 for Mahaney Shamrocks. On the female side, Alice Wright
- 48:40one and set a new course record. She ran 70 minutes and 50
- 48:44seconds. She's double track club but
- 48:46she's umm, she's actually umm, British.
- 48:48So umm Phelan Kelly who runs double track club and he's
- 48:53coaching her Second World mate was made.
- 48:58Does anyone want to pronounce who got second?
- 49:00No. No.
- 49:03Oh, did the surname. Oh, it's not even that.
- 49:07May yeah, Maeve Brannigan so she's from Galway City Harriers.
- 49:12She around at 75 O 9 and then Neve Staunton from Saint Albans
- 49:17AC she ran at 7744. So yeah, a lot of people do this
- 49:23and it's, again, like I said, one of the biggest half
- 49:27marathons because it's pretty flat and.
- 49:30But would you be a lot? Would you?
- 49:31Like. Give this one a go.
- 49:36Yeah, yeah. I definitely love the future and
- 49:39it's just yeah, absolutely. It's a really good flat course
- 49:43and a good chance like your Armstrong around 6423 solo.
- 49:46So I am, yeah. I'm the sort of like good time
- 49:50gear as well to have it like it's not too cold, it's not too
- 49:52warm and the only thing that can mess you up is the wind and but
- 49:57lots of things and lots of people around PBS.
- 49:59So I'm not a lot of people do in the build up to let's say a
- 50:02London or some of these spring marathons.
- 50:05And because it's not very often that you actually have a nice
- 50:07flat fast half marathon like right in your door.
- 50:11So yeah, that was. James is the most Irish club
- 50:16ever. Isn't that if I sing that with a
- 50:19green like that? I haven't seen, I haven't seen
- 50:23the singlet of men off the name alone.
- 50:25Rehaney, Shamrocks. Yeah.
- 50:27Or any summers? Yeah, big one in Dublin.
- 50:33Yeah, that's it. Any cash?
- 50:36But would you know much cash, Sir?
- 50:38I said I was, I said it was cash and it comes in as it's like in
- 50:44conjunction with like the me it's half marathon
- 50:46championships. So my area is made.
- 50:49And so the team were asking me to just run it for like me after
- 50:53having like like the last two weeks before this down week, I
- 50:56was just so 3K specific. And then I had the week off and
- 51:00I feel like for me to do a half marathon off nothing, it's just
- 51:03a recipe for disaster. So a Saturday, but like you're
- 51:07watching all the results come in and yeah, EV, it's like
- 51:11definitely one that I'll do next year or you're asking.
- 51:14Can I ask a couple questions? Do you know what will they block
- 51:18the roads off for this sort of a race?
- 51:19Like is it on footpath or is it on road?
- 51:23It's on country roads, so a lot of the roads around here, they
- 51:26don't have footpaths. It's really just a road and
- 51:29either side is a deep ditch filled with water.
- 51:32So, but there's normally a lead car.
- 51:35I think the roads are closed. And yeah, I'd like, again, I've
- 51:42never run it, but I'm pretty sure like a lot of the roads are
- 51:45so narrow, like if you met a car, like you're in trouble.
- 51:48So I'm pretty sure the roads are closed.
- 51:50And then how do you go with, like, certifications for these
- 51:53races? Like, do these pop up on
- 51:54people's World Athletics profiles?
- 51:56Like you know with some races they don't get certified, others
- 51:59do. I'm actually not too sure.
- 52:01I'll check here now if it's World Athletic certified.
- 52:05I'm pretty sure it's not because you have to pay for that.
- 52:08Don't. You rather give that back to the
- 52:13athletes, you reckon? Yeah, yeah, you can work away
- 52:18there. I'll check here now.
- 52:21Now I was just curious because you know, like with some of our
- 52:23local races, we fall into the issues.
- 52:27One, a lot of Perth races are trapped on footpaths which make
- 52:31them not as much fun to run. And then the other thing is only
- 52:34some races they could bother to get certified, others they do.
- 52:37So it's just curious. But like, I'm trying to at the
- 52:40moment, I'm trying to enter a race in Belgium for the second
- 52:43last week in May and because the Arma road race isn't actually
- 52:49World Athletic certified, so they actually don't take it.
- 52:54I did 14. O nine, yeah.
- 52:58So they have to use my 1430 from nationals last summer and I was
- 53:03talking to the organizers and I was like, well, like this road
- 53:05race was certified in like 2020. So I don't know why they stopped
- 53:09getting a certified course. Umm, they're like, yeah, you
- 53:13need a, you need a certified race to, to like use to get into
- 53:18it. And I was saying, well, there's
- 53:20no, she's like, can you just do one before the race, Do a 5K
- 53:23before? And I'm like, there is actually,
- 53:25no, there's attic certified races in Ireland between now and
- 53:29like I used to. There's only one.
- 53:31The Nationals is probably the only one.
- 53:33I just can't believe UMM are like with the field and the the
- 53:37reputation of the race they wouldn't bother to renew that
- 53:41certification. 2020 was the last time.
- 53:45Shit, they normally be run for a few years don't they?
- 53:48When they get certified? I thought they get that
- 53:50certificate sort of covers them for 2-3 years or something.
- 53:54It must be pretty expensive though to get it done if like
- 53:58they stopped doing it. It's a shame, yeah.
- 54:02And no, that half marathon is not World Athletic certified.
- 54:07There you go, universal problem. Training weeks then I guess
- 54:12we've had what Erin's been up to, pasta, pizza, Aperol and
- 54:16Gelato. It's nice to hear that he's had
- 54:19a bit of a change. So I guess, Dean, the floor's
- 54:22yours this week, mate. Is that right?
- 54:25You don't want to go first? You happy for me to lead us off
- 54:27or? Yeah, we'll go with the the
- 54:30original lead man. OK, well on Monday, Ryan, you
- 54:37would remember we we ventured out to the hills.
- 54:41Damn, yeah, that's only last week.
- 54:43Feels like longer ago. Yeah.
- 54:45So he did that heels ride, which we enjoyed going up.
- 54:48I certainly enjoyed going up the hills more than going down them.
- 54:51But that was 100 KS in the in the morning.
- 54:56And then I just went out with Aurora on the Aurora's on her
- 55:00bike and I went for a little jog just for 30 minutes in the
- 55:03afternoon. So it was Monday.
- 55:04It's funny, you know, I was on the phone to my mum this week
- 55:07and she she said, oh, and yes, Ryan, I did hear the podcast and
- 55:11I did hear your 88 kilometers an hour.
- 55:14So I won't tell you what I think because you know, and I know
- 55:18that you won't do anything about it.
- 55:20So. Just just on note, just been
- 55:24noted down. And did you explain it was all
- 55:29in control? You had the brakes, hands on the
- 55:30brakes? I told her about the emu and
- 55:33then she was. Quite Jesus.
- 55:36Did we talk about the EMU on the podcast?
- 55:38I can't remember. No, you.
- 55:41Didn't and Amy jumped out in front of us while we were
- 55:45heading down one of the hills. Like so you go up a big hill so
- 55:50it's about 3 kilometres long and then you start and then you're
- 55:52out the back of the eastern hills and then we're riding on
- 55:56these sort of rolling hills out the back there.
- 55:59We're on this downhill section, the six of us that are all
- 56:01riding beautiful, like high tree tops, but there's a few paths
- 56:07that like, and it's just bushland and yeah, an emu runs
- 56:10out in front of us and just starts across the road.
- 56:14And a few of the guys that had jumped right out in front of,
- 56:16they were, I don't know what they're looking at, but they
- 56:18didn't even notice it. But the rest of us certainly
- 56:21did. He's a Spanish guy and when
- 56:23we're having coffee afterwards someone mentioned the emu and he
- 56:26was like, what an emu? You sure?
- 56:33How'd you not say it nearly took you out, but there you go.
- 56:37That was a ride on Monday. Tuesday was a workout, which
- 56:43this workout I've completely had enough of.
- 56:46It's 3 by 8 minutes with a 2 minute float.
- 56:48I think I've probably done it about 12 Times Now in the past
- 56:50few months. How's the the pace and the heart
- 56:53rate starting to interact? Yeah, it's, it's difficult
- 56:58because it is still pretty warm sometimes when I'm doing this
- 57:01workout. So it's hard to get too much of
- 57:02A gauge. But I do feel like I'm getting
- 57:05fitter. So my heart rate wasn't super
- 57:07high. My heart rate was on average 172
- 57:10which if I'm I would say thresholds probably 10 beats
- 57:13higher than that. What pace?
- 57:17The average from 326-320-1318 that were the paces for the 8
- 57:24minutes and then easy jog in the afternoon Wednesday.
- 57:32Just two commute jogs, usual in and out of the office Thursday
- 57:36morning, double threshold Thursday.
- 57:38So bike intervals in the morning.
- 57:41It's quite a pleasant loop, quite a pleasant loop that we
- 57:44did in Kings Park. So it's about 20 minutes of
- 57:48fare, you know, pre efforts and then some harder efforts up, up
- 57:52a hill. I know some of the listeners are
- 57:56somewhat enjoying the cycling chat, so I'm going to bring some
- 58:00some knowledge to it as well because I learned something last
- 58:02week on the when RAF sends like the the session through or the
- 58:06breakdown of the ride, he says 20 minute TTT.
- 58:11And I always understood that it's like just a tempo or a
- 58:14threshold like 20 minutes. And I knew that was one of the
- 58:17TS but didn't know what the the rest of them meant.
- 58:21And Luke told me the other day, team time trial.
- 58:25So it means you ride in a group and you're not trying to drop
- 58:29your group, you're riding together.
- 58:32So the time trial ends when the last member of your group gets
- 58:36back to the stars. Which is a good little way to do
- 58:39it really, isn't it? Well, it was quite pleasant to
- 58:43be honest. And because Luke knew what the
- 58:46ask was, he didn't try and blast the shoot the legs out from
- 58:49under us within the 1st 2 minutes of the ride.
- 58:51So it was actually quite an enjoyable 1st 20 minutes of the
- 58:54workout. And then it got serious, didn't
- 58:56know. And then we had intervals either
- 58:58seated or standing tight, 45 seconds hard, 15 seconds harder
- 59:03or whatever it was for the remainder of the workout.
- 59:05But it's a good, it's a good morning.
- 59:09I enjoy it and then the afternoon.
- 59:12I'm just laughing comparing the TTT to running like it just
- 59:17wouldn't work with the team time trial.
- 59:19You'd just be thinking I'm going to smash this fucker on the last
- 59:21lap. Yeah, wow.
- 59:24So that segues nicely into my Thursday afternoon.
- 59:28So it was that the team, the group had a Gregson and RAF very
- 59:32kindly LED us to Luke and I were together, so partnered us up
- 59:36with Luke again. And so we just did what worked
- 59:41out to be that the guys the tempo part of it.
- 59:45So the Gregson is 10 minute tempo, 5 by 1 minute on, one
- 59:48minute off fart leg, 10 minutes threshold continuous for 30
- 59:53minutes. We just did 10 minutes, 10
- 59:55minutes, 10 minutes progressing each 10 minutes.
- 59:57So I just, we, I went 329-320-3313 for the 30 minutes
- 1:00:04naturally got a bit quick. Sorry. 330 must be the fastest
- 1:00:08you've moved in a little while. How'd that feel?
- 1:00:12Yeah, good. Like I pulled up a little bit
- 1:00:14sore after the Thursday afternoon workout last week,
- 1:00:18whereas this week when I jogged into work I felt better.
- 1:00:21So I feel like I'm again, it's not my heart rate that's capping
- 1:00:25out as much as it's just making sure I'm not loading my body up
- 1:00:28too much. Didn't have my heart rate on,
- 1:00:32which is maybe a bit annoying, but it felt for the most of it
- 1:00:35actually felt pretty in control, which is good.
- 1:00:40So yeah, ticking boxes. Friday ran to work and then
- 1:00:45actually ran to the pool to meet kids for a swim after work on
- 1:00:49Friday afternoon. Saturday is our CRT ride.
- 1:00:53Ryan at 6:30 in the morning. Missed the alarm this week?
- 1:00:59It did. Wouldn't be like, yeah.
- 1:01:05I this is the the next part, it's Fast forward through mine.
- 1:01:09We'll talk about Ryan's. But yeah.
- 1:01:11And then I just did an hour and a half easy Sunday night
- 1:01:16housing. Her mum did a women's triathlon
- 1:01:18together on Sunday morning. So I was, I was on Sunday
- 1:01:23afternoon jogging duties because I was, I was dragging the three
- 1:01:27Amigos down to watch that, which was a lot of fun.
- 1:01:30Were you like, what do they call it, like crew in that triathlon?
- 1:01:33Were you out there like providing fuel and bottles
- 1:01:36stuff? I was just trying to make sure
- 1:01:38the kids didn't drown on and got myself to the start line.
- 1:01:40That was probably a triathlon in and of itself, really.
- 1:01:44So now I was absolutely no help. But how's that at all?
- 1:01:48Representing each of the three kids for you.
- 1:01:51Pretty much I was just trying, trying my best to, you know, at
- 1:01:57least get to the start line before it starts.
- 1:01:59That was probably a big achievement ticked off, but
- 1:02:04yeah. So that was 90 KS of running,
- 1:02:07230 KS of writing. Sure.
- 1:02:11So it could be actually my biggest week in terms of
- 1:02:13activity. It's 14 1/2 hours, I think, of
- 1:02:17exercise. So that's that.
- 1:02:21Another step forward. Set.
- 1:02:25I am somewhat similar. For me really, I think
- 1:02:28summarised is 312 KS of riding and 60 KS of running, which is
- 1:02:35good because that's back-to-back 60K running weeks.
- 1:02:38And yeah, I'm deliberately holding myself back as in like
- 1:02:43I'm still just doing 2 days in a row and by the third day now I'm
- 1:02:47really wanting to run, but just trying to keep that like, no,
- 1:02:51three days in a row because just a little bit too much.
- 1:02:55So when's your race? When's next?
- 1:02:59Race you made. Yeah.
- 1:03:02Because he's just. We haven't got through Saturday
- 1:03:04yet. Oh, OK.
- 1:03:07OK, OK, OK. No, that was, that was a team
- 1:03:10time trial, but the no, no. No, we'll get.
- 1:03:13Look, let's slow down. That's it.
- 1:03:16That's rewind. OK, my straw was not loading for
- 1:03:23the first part of the week. I didn't do any intensity in the
- 1:03:26runs. Oh, because I was cooked from
- 1:03:28Monday riding in the hills and then jogging in the afternoon.
- 1:03:32So Tuesday and Wednesday was just jogging too and riding.
- 1:03:35And then Thursday got down to the lake.
- 1:03:38Done 15 minutes study, two-minute jog, 10 minutes
- 1:03:42study. So that was like the biggest
- 1:03:44stimulus or impact through volume I've had yet.
- 1:03:47I think the first 15 minutes was 350 ones at like 152 beats,
- 1:03:53which is right around perfect for steady.
- 1:03:57And then the 10 minutes was 340 ones, which was highly
- 1:04:02exaggerated by the last five minutes of that because there
- 1:04:06was a young female athlete who was finishing her 10 minute
- 1:04:10threshold and she arrived on my shoulder and proceeded to try
- 1:04:16and advance past my shoulder. I can't allow it.
- 1:04:22I can't allow it. Obviously when you're doing
- 1:04:24steady, you feels like so great, you're so in control.
- 1:04:28And it's just that stupid little competitiveness inside me.
- 1:04:32I think maybe because I haven't had the the opportunity to
- 1:04:34exercise it for so long, I was just like, Nah, you're not
- 1:04:38having it. So you pick a young girl to race
- 1:04:42against. So my heart rate progressed up
- 1:04:45to like 173 beats. Yeah.
- 1:04:48And I can hear this girl like, she's right alongside me, like.
- 1:04:53But in fairness, I don't think I've done a dirty because when
- 1:04:56she stopped, she said she uttered thank you.
- 1:04:58So it was more of an attractor. Through the end of a session,
- 1:05:02we'll say. Oh.
- 1:05:03She front runner. Yeah, like literally one of
- 1:05:08these like 1314 year old juniors.
- 1:05:14Hey, you've. Got to start somewhere.
- 1:05:17So that's that's the first win of the comeback there.
- 1:05:22He obviously grew in confidence quickly.
- 1:05:27Yeah, so then because of the missed alarm on Saturday
- 1:05:30morning, obviously hadn't thought past doing the group
- 1:05:35ride, which that went out the window and I was like, shit, oh,
- 1:05:39I haven't done park run for a while, might as well go and run
- 1:05:42with some fellow recreational runners and, you know, took
- 1:05:46Becky along with me. How do you miss your alarm like
- 1:05:50yourself? True it you didn't set it like
- 1:05:52what happens there? I must have been cooked off the
- 1:05:57the threshold effort on the Thursday night because my body
- 1:06:00just needed to sleep. It's a load.
- 1:06:05That many times too well and he could have just ridden it in
- 1:06:07reverse. It just better and he messaged
- 1:06:11me while I'm riding there that he's it is too late.
- 1:06:15So was it that late? No.
- 1:06:18It was like 6:15 when I messaged you.
- 1:06:21Yeah, and nearly 4-5 minutes from there.
- 1:06:23But you were to give me shit for being arriving on the fuelled.
- 1:06:28It was a lose, lose. Shut it up.
- 1:06:31I did take some pictures out of him with hot cross buns coming
- 1:06:36out of his ears eating that many hot cross buns last week on the
- 1:06:41right. He certainly does feel well when
- 1:06:44he's prepared. But anyways.
- 1:06:46Tough ones. These are mud cake months I
- 1:06:49think. Mud cake, yeah, but messy, to be
- 1:06:51fair. Yeah.
- 1:06:55Yeah, so the the park run, the plan was to have a nice Saturday
- 1:06:59morning with my fiance and with Bondo some running together.
- 1:07:03So the plan was steady, which I don't know where you want me to
- 1:07:13go. I was thinking maybe a 19 minute
- 1:07:19park run, like 150 beats a minute, whatever bore the Super
- 1:07:23blast deliberately so I couldn't get too carried away.
- 1:07:26And then I just looked the first time I looked at my watch, it
- 1:07:30was 335 average. I was like, oh, so I'll, I'll
- 1:07:34naturally settle down, you know, to what is it like?
- 1:07:38Adrenaline is spiked initially everyone goes out, gets finds
- 1:07:41the little place and then there's there's a bit of a train
- 1:07:45going. To be fair, I must have been
- 1:07:48around 10th position after 500 meters.
- 1:07:51So I was like, oh, this is OK. Heart rate was 150 low.
- 1:07:56So I'll just keep going with this trying and not to get too
- 1:08:03silly. And then we got about 2K in and
- 1:08:06I was still just sitting at the back of the train thinking this
- 1:08:08is very enjoyable, but also conscious of the thoughts
- 1:08:12running through my head like you need to go round them.
- 1:08:15And I was just trying to silence these thoughts like this is not
- 1:08:19the purpose. Don't need to go around anyone.
- 1:08:23And then, you know, as down that like tunnel in Lake Mungo with
- 1:08:27the like trees that come over next to the freeway.
- 1:08:30So we go down there. And then at the bottom of that,
- 1:08:34we caught a lone wolf who was ahead of us.
- 1:08:37And the train I was sitting at the back of decided to slot in
- 1:08:41behind this guy. And by this point, he's moving
- 1:08:43considerably slower than what we were to catch him.
- 1:08:47So I took the initiative. I was feeling good.
- 1:08:50I was like, oh, we're past 160 beats now anyway.
- 1:08:53We might as well just make of this what it is and have a
- 1:08:56little squeeze for the rest of it.
- 1:08:58So then yeah, it was a bit of a progressive park from where
- 1:09:03really I think the last K was 320 run like 1722 or something,
- 1:09:08heart rate being mid one 70s by the end of it.
- 1:09:13You say that, so you got the win.
- 1:09:16Now I came third, the other two were way gone.
- 1:09:21I know. You didn't even win.
- 1:09:24Well, a little bit frustrated afterwards because if I had to
- 1:09:27set out with the intention then I might as well have tried to
- 1:09:29win, mightn't I? What was it one in?
- 1:09:331647 or something but I did convert 2nd place and 1st place
- 1:09:41to podcast listeners. They had a chat to me afterwards
- 1:09:46and it's funny, like as soon as you mentioned, Oh, you watch Ran
- 1:09:51to Japan on YouTube, they're both like, Oh yeah, like full of
- 1:09:54conversation. And then obviously now they're
- 1:09:57tuning. In so you start a conversation,
- 1:10:01have to watch what you get. Well, it was about 15 minutes
- 1:10:06into the race debrief. It's not the worst.
- 1:10:10You totally blow out. Now, well, the main thing was
- 1:10:14then, how would it feel Sunday morning?
- 1:10:15So if I'm fine enough to do 75 minutes just plodding around,
- 1:10:21which is good. So now we've got, I've got first
- 1:10:25formal session tomorrow, shall we say.
- 1:10:29At the track. No threshold type session.
- 1:10:34Get the spikes on this guy. Refers to your four hundreds.
- 1:10:40We'll get we'll get the know me or else.
- 1:10:43Oh yeah, Ryan wants. Ryan wants us to take to take no
- 1:10:46meow shots to get his prom for it, I think.
- 1:10:50I think the idea is we're still holding back for a little bit,
- 1:10:53but anyway. Well, you see it as the overall
- 1:10:57health benefit, don't you? So you might as well just get
- 1:10:59our greens in. Look in that regard, I'm I'm all
- 1:11:04for it. And isn't there like
- 1:11:05anti-inflammatory properties to it as well?
- 1:11:08It's the recovery, the oxidative stress you.
- 1:11:12Just want to take him to the moon first work Outback.
- 1:11:15You've got three weeks to cram for an exam, which is the
- 1:11:18British fun run. Ryan, just don't double dose.
- 1:11:24All the greats do, though. So yeah, I mean the good thing
- 1:11:29is it didn't completely rupture my bloody planter or anything
- 1:11:32which like could have done something silly really.
- 1:11:36I think now if I'm doing any intensity, I probably should be
- 1:11:39putting carbons on because they are like stiffer and they
- 1:11:42protect it more. Now I've got.
- 1:11:44Now I am have returned to run. I should probably transition to
- 1:11:48protecting it a little. But I still think you need to
- 1:11:52keep in the gym and like strengthen them.
- 1:11:54Like just don't totally sack it off now that you're when you get
- 1:11:57back running. Which, to be fair, he was there
- 1:11:59tonight. Yeah.
- 1:12:02Didn't sleep as well I. Didn't sleep too long, I see.
- 1:12:08Yeah, 312 KS of riding and 60 KS of running.
- 1:12:11I reckon pound for pound that might be my biggest week ever as
- 1:12:14well because. Yeah.
- 1:12:16How many hours is that? That's a lot.
- 1:12:18Otherwise I've ran the most ever ran was 140 K, so I've ran 60
- 1:12:24now so there's ACK deficit. 312 K on the bike is worth more than
- 1:12:29AC KS of running. Isn't it?
- 1:12:31Well, it's like 10 hours, isn't it?
- 1:12:33What's that? 10 hours of riding.
- 1:12:36Yeah, let's say OK, an hour, yeah.
- 1:12:38Pardon. Yeah, 10 hours and riding and
- 1:12:41four and a half KS are running 14 1/2 hour week.
- 1:12:45So to be fair, I think I am pretty fit, I just need to
- 1:12:47convert it to running fitness over the next couple of months.
- 1:12:54Conditioned legs. Yeah, I'm feeling a little bit
- 1:12:57similar. I'm almost loathed to do away
- 1:13:01with the 200 odd KS of bike riding because I feel like it's
- 1:13:05I'm getting aerobically fit while I'm doing 2 workouts in
- 1:13:08the long run. So yeah, it's been good, the
- 1:13:12bike, I think. Owen, before you go, what do you
- 1:13:16think of the have you seen this news item about the underage
- 1:13:19Ethiopians? They're not ratifying like 5
- 1:13:22under 20 world records because they found Medina Issa.
- 1:13:26And who was the other one? Becca Halon, they've been in
- 1:13:32taken world records in under 20 age category and they cannot.
- 1:13:37What's the official word that they've used anyway?
- 1:13:41They don't believe that they're in the under 20 category anyway,
- 1:13:44basically. If why, how do they get to run
- 1:13:47the race? Like I don't understand how this
- 1:13:49happens. Like how are they allowed to run
- 1:13:50the race under 20 but not allowed to take the record.
- 1:13:54It's so stupid. There's Ethiopia again by the
- 1:13:56way. Each job are the biggest cable
- 1:13:58is in this sport. They don't test their athletes.
- 1:14:00They just let anyone run. Yeah, I feel.
- 1:14:05Like this issue is like fairly long standing too.
- 1:14:09I don't know. I feel like it's good that it
- 1:14:10finally someone's calling it out.
- 1:14:14But yeah, it's a shame because I feel like it's a pipeline for
- 1:14:19athletes to get contracts and become professionals is when
- 1:14:23you're an under 20 champion and you're deprived of an
- 1:14:27opportunity. And it's it's good that the not
- 1:14:31ratifying like these age group world records, but I think it's
- 1:14:35like cheating, full stop, isn't it?
- 1:14:37So even in the open age races where they're not racing an age
- 1:14:41category, I feel like they should still be stripped of any
- 1:14:43races that win in there because just through like the moral
- 1:14:46compass of it, like, what are you doing?
- 1:14:49Yeah, that might hopefully incentivize people to not
- 1:14:51bullshit about your age some harsher penalty.
- 1:14:56Because that's the issue a lot of the time with this is the
- 1:14:59there's no great disincentivizing for cheating.
- 1:15:03And if you're therefore you're just bound by your moral ethical
- 1:15:07compass, If that doesn't exist, then you're just going to people
- 1:15:10are just going to keep cheating. I have a little double trouble.
- 1:15:16No, there we go. Got time for this?
- 1:15:19It's aimed at news actually haven't been briefed on this,
- 1:15:21but it's aimed at another podcast.
- 1:15:23Oh shit, Oh. Yeah, man, it's a podcast I
- 1:15:27read. It's a play class I really enjoy
- 1:15:31and it is, you know that and ah, what's this off?
- 1:15:37They use it to medio pace is done it medio.
- 1:15:42The inside running guys are on about it.
- 1:15:44Yeah. Medio pace well for three lads
- 1:15:51that make themselves come across as like so like blue collar raw
- 1:15:57old school to be fat and on about some medial face up.
- 1:16:03It does my not in like yeah, it's crap isn't it?
- 1:16:10No, she's agree or disagree. Oh, you mean the the way it
- 1:16:15spits out a pace like a messy O pace, Like it basically discards
- 1:16:20you, the pace that you've actually ran out and puts like
- 1:16:22weather simulations on it and looks at your elevation and
- 1:16:25says, well, this is what your true pace is?
- 1:16:30Yeah, but the boys are on a bit like, oh, old school this old
- 1:16:35school that like yeah, no super shoes are like it's not a shy
- 1:16:40ever. And then they fucking go on
- 1:16:41about this media pace saying, oh, oh, well, that was a good
- 1:16:44run because you have to take into account the humidity and
- 1:16:46all this and no, no, no, that. Like it doesn't make sense.
- 1:16:52So you say media pace is a load of bollocks or are you saying
- 1:16:57we're we're the? Boys are gone soft.
- 1:17:00The boys are not soft. Yeah.
- 1:17:02Just run hard. I think we get all that.
- 1:17:04I think media pick no, I think media pace is good, but when
- 1:17:07you're using it for every single training run like it's a bit
- 1:17:10fucking stupid, No, like for a race, Fair enough.
- 1:17:13But like it's good to run outside in these conditions.
- 1:17:16It's not. People just run in a treadmill
- 1:17:17and like control their own like factors.
- 1:17:21Are you, are you saying constantly like umm eh, getting
- 1:17:26obsessed by your media pace umm, adjustments?
- 1:17:30Yeah, like Brady's on about all this run, but it was that
- 1:17:33humidity of such and such and it was at this time of day.
- 1:17:36So this means I actually run such and such faster if the
- 1:17:39conditions were perfect. The conditions are never going
- 1:17:41to be perfect. Like build a bridge, get over it
- 1:17:43like it's a run. You don't need to read too much
- 1:17:45into it. I think it it could be part of
- 1:17:51the marketing strategy. I think they've got a bit of a
- 1:17:53partnership with the moment they.
- 1:17:57I do agree that I don't understand the purpose of it for
- 1:18:01like day-to-day runs. Maybe if if the race goes wrong
- 1:18:06then you could. The first thing you're doing is
- 1:18:07going to messy O and seeing if it'll give you an excuse, but
- 1:18:11other than that? Yeah, that's my, that's all I
- 1:18:16have to say. No, look, I enjoyed that.
- 1:18:19I'm one for a lot of data and all that sort of stuff.
- 1:18:22But but I think you're right. I think at some point you
- 1:18:25probably just need to just run, suck it up and train.
- 1:18:31Here we go, that's all. That's all we need to do.
- 1:18:33Suck it up and train. So now you you get enough to
- 1:18:36leave Dean Knights pick up the pieces.
- 1:18:39Yeah, but he's good luck with that.
- 1:18:45See you later. Yeah.
- 1:18:48What else have we got? Did you see the half marathon
- 1:18:51championships in the USA? Obviously we talked about it
- 1:18:53extensively last week and we shared it on Instagram because
- 1:18:56it was kind of like the big talking point of the week.
- 1:18:59They've they seem to have put it right.
- 1:19:02You've seen the the remedy or the fix that they've put in
- 1:19:04place. They've now got multiple
- 1:19:07champions and multiple podium guesses.
- 1:19:10Yeah, I did say that the Athletics Club awarded.
- 1:19:14Do we speak about the prize money?
- 1:19:15I can't remember if we spoke about that on or off the pod,
- 1:19:18but that they've awarded equal prize money, I think.
- 1:19:21What did they award the winner with a person that was clearly
- 1:19:24front? They got awarded first place and
- 1:19:27then they split second and third because they were running
- 1:19:29together at the time they went off course, which I think is a
- 1:19:32massive thing. Like I think they offer like
- 1:19:34$20,000 in prize money. So like for these sorts of
- 1:19:37clubs, that would erode A suspected substantial amount of
- 1:19:40profit if they had a lot, even if they had that.
- 1:19:43So I don't know. Everything I saw about the event
- 1:19:49organizers, they were measured, but then also fairly Click to
- 1:19:54react did all the right things. I thought they did a very good
- 1:19:56job. So I saw that was a really good
- 1:19:59response. And then, yeah, did US track
- 1:20:02field, have they resolved? I think I saw that they awarded
- 1:20:06them as national champions, like equal national champions.
- 1:20:09I think. I don't know.
- 1:20:10It seems like a fair result given.
- 1:20:14You would argue a case for both sets of women the the original
- 1:20:18podium getters that were unfairly taken off course.
- 1:20:20They have a strong case to argue as being national champion.
- 1:20:24And then those other athletes would probably argue that
- 1:20:29technically they were too were the national champion given that
- 1:20:34those other athletes did golf course and they just not too.
- 1:20:37So it seems like the fairest result will be a bit of a
- 1:20:42strange one. Yeah, I think the only thing
- 1:20:45remaining is for the spots to be allocated for the actual
- 1:20:48championships, but it seems like they've put all the right things
- 1:20:52in place to be able to honor the three women who would have
- 1:20:56secured those spots. Yeah, and a good reaction to
- 1:21:00those sorts of things. Sometimes people just stick
- 1:21:02their heels in and just say it's not my fault, you know, and it's
- 1:21:06an athlete's responsibility. Rah, rah.
- 1:21:08So good result. And I think it's taken a lot of
- 1:21:11the heat out because they are doing what you'd hoped they'd
- 1:21:15do. And Joanne, it's good of the
- 1:21:18community. There's a few people that were
- 1:21:19quite vocal about what you hope to happen.
- 1:21:21And I feel like it's, it's a good, it's good when people do
- 1:21:25flex a little bit like that to hopefully hold USA track and
- 1:21:30field and race organizers to account because otherwise these
- 1:21:35things could fall not in your favour and there's never really
- 1:21:38a voice to make them accountable.
- 1:21:40Yeah, true. Nice that like almost you feel
- 1:21:43like the community has democracy has decided what the right thing
- 1:21:47is here through social media and whatever else.
- 1:21:51It's like when I did my first marathon in Adelaide and I
- 1:21:54emailed the event asking about if the event websites up to date
- 1:21:58because there was prize money on there and then did the race and
- 1:22:01then checked the website. The prize money had been taken
- 1:22:04down and they didn't honor it. How much was that?
- 1:22:09A couple of grand or something. Oh geez, me and two others,
- 1:22:13we're all into state. They came in for that rest.
- 1:22:16That would have. Been Runners Club?
- 1:22:18Yeah, it did. It's dirty there.
- 1:22:21Damn. I needed David Roach to be
- 1:22:24flying the flag for me. Not been back to Adelaide since.
- 1:22:28No, that was it. Named a kid after it.
- 1:22:32That was about it. YouTube Diaries for me this week
- 1:22:36I watched there was a long form documentary come out about
- 1:22:39Connor Manse I think produced by Shocks and like in partnership
- 1:22:44with Morton, the obviously two of his big sponsors.
- 1:22:47And it was all about his American record-breaking run and
- 1:22:50campaign and build last year. So where he ran 2 or 4 in
- 1:22:55Chicago at the end of the year, as typical with any Manse or
- 1:23:00Clayton Young content, high Stone is quite heavily involved
- 1:23:03and I think that's something that they do so well.
- 1:23:07I know Macau do it as well with their coach, but it's always
- 1:23:09good to get that like contrasting perspective from the
- 1:23:13athletes emotions to them. The coaches like seeing the
- 1:23:16bigger picture and kind of like explaining the sessions, whereas
- 1:23:21the athletes just only living in that exact moment.
- 1:23:25It's hard to kind of see perspective for them, isn't it?
- 1:23:28But the coach is always thinking months down the line, he has
- 1:23:33really good production, like 50 minutes long as well.
- 1:23:36And you they go speak to his family, talk about him as a
- 1:23:39child and they're like his brother as well.
- 1:23:44Talked about when he first identified that Connor was going
- 1:23:47to be like a great runner. Like they just went on a run
- 1:23:49together and then kind of like just zoomed off towards the end.
- 1:23:53The news like what the hell? Yeah, you you really get to see
- 1:23:59monsters personality. Like he seems like just such a
- 1:24:02nice, genuine down to earth guy. So I don't think the American
- 1:24:06record could have happened to a better American, really.
- 1:24:11Yeah, no, it's not one I'm saying, but I'm going to have to
- 1:24:13go check it out now. I only mentioned off the pod
- 1:24:16that he watched it as well, so it sounds like it was a good
- 1:24:18one. And you've been on a couple.
- 1:24:24Yeah, I mean, this stuff I've been saying across the ran to
- 1:24:29Japan, I mean, I think we spoke about a little bit, but just in
- 1:24:32terms of his pre and post recaps of Tokyo, I really enjoyed them,
- 1:24:37the live streams, just to get an insight into what he's thinking
- 1:24:41about on top of what he's speaking about on the podcast
- 1:24:44with yourself, Ryan. And then watched his recap that
- 1:24:47came out. Was it when I ran into work this
- 1:24:49morning, the one that was released yesterday about the
- 1:24:52Tokyo Marathon just made me reflect on why.
- 1:24:57Like there's certain YouTube channels that always pop up in
- 1:25:00my algorithm. And I think like someone like
- 1:25:03him, like it's so reliable, you know, with that Sunday release,
- 1:25:07like I think there's a few runners that consistently put
- 1:25:10out a weekly content and that seems to be so effective.
- 1:25:15I mean, it must be hard to do that on a weekly basis, but you
- 1:25:19know, the ones that have a predictable weekly structure and
- 1:25:22and release date, they're the ones that seem to catch, catch
- 1:25:27you all the time. She just got accustomed to to
- 1:25:30watching it and consuming it, don't you?
- 1:25:32Same with like podcasts you listen to.
- 1:25:35Yeah, and the release dates, you know, when they have a similar
- 1:25:37release time, like so when he does release it on a Sunday,
- 1:25:40I'll either catch it if I'm doing a sauna on a Sunday night
- 1:25:43or when I'm running into work on a Monday morning.
- 1:25:45Like it's like predictable time to when I want to consume it.
- 1:25:50It works, really. And then you sort of fit that
- 1:25:51into your weekly log of social, you know, of media.
- 1:25:58And then Morgan McDonald, I don't know if you saw his latest
- 1:26:01video, but he did one just on double threshold and his fueling
- 1:26:05and how many grams of carbs he's he's taking on in and around
- 1:26:08fueling and bit of an insight. And it's just a slightly
- 1:26:12different spin because he's broken away from the OACUS team.
- 1:26:16It was quite good. I just enjoyed it.
- 1:26:19And I wonder if he's maybe going to release a bit more given he's
- 1:26:21back doing his own thing. So it was, it was a good 11
- 1:26:25minute vids, nice and short. It was good.
- 1:26:27Stop being self-sufficient, chicken boy morgues, is it?
- 1:26:31It was, yeah. It was just straight his name,
- 1:26:33so it was a bit. Off brand More.
- 1:26:35Straight laced, yeah, very clean cut but less humor but
- 1:26:41interesting. It was good insight.
- 1:26:43Yeah, nice. Owen has well and truly covered
- 1:26:46Double Trouble, so we'll leave that one there.
- 1:26:50In terms of what's coming up in the next week, it's a pretty big
- 1:26:52week to be honest, given we're kind of in that like little in
- 1:26:55between period for the indoor season where everything in terms
- 1:26:59of team selection and qualifiers has been decided and the
- 1:27:04championship start. I think it's a week on Friday or
- 1:27:08a week on anyway. The next weekend is is a bit of
- 1:27:11a nothing weekend from the indoor season, but there are 4
- 1:27:16three massive half marathons globally, first one being
- 1:27:21Malaga. And this one is very interesting
- 1:27:24to me because I think Emil Caress is on the start line.
- 1:27:30So I don't know if it's going too far to say the British
- 1:27:36record is under threat, but it literally wouldn't surprise me
- 1:27:42because you besides was the world champs where he stepped
- 1:27:46off wasn't it in Tokyo? And I think, I think some of the
- 1:27:49narrative after that was like, he only stepped off because he
- 1:27:53knew he wasn't going to medal and therefore he'd like
- 1:27:57literally when he's racing, he's racing to like perform at the
- 1:28:00highest level. So he's like, well, I don't see
- 1:28:02the point in going through an extra 10K burying my body if
- 1:28:05it's not going to get me a medal or a time.
- 1:28:08So what I'm trying to get at is if he steps on the start line,
- 1:28:11he's there with good reason and massive intent and he's already
- 1:28:17got what's his PB right now tell you third fastest breath ever,
- 1:28:2260 O one behind only Callum Hawkins with 60 dead and Mo
- 1:28:28Farah around 5932. So I mean draw comparison to the
- 1:28:33likes of Jack Rayner the other week breaking the Aussie record
- 1:28:375953 with all due respect to Jackie's national record
- 1:28:42holders. Unbelievable athlete, whether
- 1:28:45it's just in my head, I would put a meal as a better endurance
- 1:28:49athlete than him. Therefore, I think he can run
- 1:28:51faster than 5953. Moe's record only being 5932.
- 1:28:58It is quite gettable if he has a day and if he's in shape.
- 1:29:01So here we'll just see. Also the drama with that is he's
- 1:29:07always been an Adidas athlete, a meal like for as long as I can
- 1:29:11remember at least. He's always in that Adidas kit
- 1:29:13and spit of a big miss for Adidas because it seems like the
- 1:29:16contract has expired given he's been photographed wearing Nike
- 1:29:20shoes quite a few times. So again, interesting to see
- 1:29:24what he's stood on the start line and whether it's something
- 1:29:28just completely blacked out and he doesn't want to give the the
- 1:29:32marks in a way or whether he kind of honours the what is it
- 1:29:38like the cool off period or something.
- 1:29:39He'll be in post contract and just wears Adidas anyway.
- 1:29:43Next one Bath half, which is Dublin as the road running
- 1:29:47championships for later in the year.
- 1:29:49Copenhagen. Well, road running
- 1:29:52championships, the qualifiers for them rather for the British
- 1:29:55team and the fields are very, very deep indeed.
- 1:29:59Women you got Jess Warner, Judd PBA 67 O 6, Abby Donnelly 69 O
- 1:30:045, Lily Partridge 6934, Alex Bell 6935, Lauren McNeil 6938
- 1:30:12amongst other women who have PVS of 70 minutes or faster and then
- 1:30:18the men. Jake Smith from London Colon has
- 1:30:21the fastest half marathon PB on paper albeit that was his pre
- 1:30:25red S time which he is trying to detach from.
- 1:30:29So his recent Barcelona half 6147 or something is his form
- 1:30:34going into the race. Ben Connor who's a well
- 1:30:38established distance runner for the UK 6055.
- 1:30:42Joe Wigfield, the hot prospects 6116.
- 1:30:46Whilst we're on that, I looked back at our interview with Joe
- 1:30:50and you know what the title of it was given he's signed for
- 1:30:54Nike what like 3 weeks ago? The title of the interview was
- 1:30:58Joe Wigfield knocking on the door.
- 1:31:02There you go. I reckon I can claim that one.
- 1:31:06Yeah. Phil Sessman, 6122.
- 1:31:10Alfie Mantor So yeah, very, very exciting race on the cards in
- 1:31:15Bath and even more so exciting that we get to chat to Jake
- 1:31:19Smith ahead of the race and find out what his plans are, what his
- 1:31:22goals are. Yeah, be interesting one it
- 1:31:25because you'll have it. You still have an eye to the
- 1:31:27marathon but he'll obviously want to run well and it feels
- 1:31:31like it's a what a good domestic field to be in.
- 1:31:36It's funny, you've always said like one of the good things
- 1:31:39about getting to chat to people and hearing their stories,
- 1:31:41building connections, is then when you're watching races, you
- 1:31:44get to feel like you've got someone to like invest in and
- 1:31:47support. And now all of a sudden we've
- 1:31:49got Jake Smith and Joe Wigfield going head to head two of our
- 1:31:53assets. It's good, right?
- 1:31:56I mean, and I honestly, I mean, given he's currently on a
- 1:32:00series, I can't help but want to vote for Jake Smith.
- 1:32:03But yeah, you want to see them both do well, I mean, and to be
- 1:32:08fair, just I'm sure they both would say the same.
- 1:32:12But it's you want everyone to be fit and you just want everyone
- 1:32:15to run fast and no matter what the result, if everyone's
- 1:32:18pulling you to good results and that's a win all round.
- 1:32:22Yeah, I wonder, will it go quick?
- 1:32:25Probably because they won't when there's like 5 or 6 people who
- 1:32:30know the distinctly fitter than anyone else.
- 1:32:32First of all, they're going to separate themselves from anyone
- 1:32:35else, aren't they? And then it's going to be a war
- 1:32:38of attrition or a tactical battle amongst them.
- 1:32:40But. Yeah, and there's a few guys
- 1:32:43that aren't. I mean, well, you heard about
- 1:32:47Jake. You heard Jake's comments about
- 1:32:49when he was running with Joe the other day, right?
- 1:32:52And about how a bit hard to wrap your head around because Joe's
- 1:32:58is coming from that speed background.
- 1:33:01He makes half marathon pace look so effortless, whereas Jake's
- 1:33:05all about that aerobic endurance and economy.
- 1:33:08And so he's, you know, ticking over at a ridiculously high
- 1:33:13cadence trying to keep up. So I suspect some of these guys
- 1:33:16like field assessment and Jake will want to apply pressure
- 1:33:22early because you don't want to leave it to a kick.
- 1:33:24So if they feel fit and fast, if they're feeling fit, then I
- 1:33:28hopefully they yeah, keep applying a heap of pressure and
- 1:33:32put gel under pressure and make a good race of it.
- 1:33:35And that will get in your head, wouldn't it, if someone's
- 1:33:36alongside you and they look glorious.
- 1:33:39But The thing is, you don't know.
- 1:33:41Internally they're probably hurting just as much as you are,
- 1:33:44just that their form might look a little bit better because you
- 1:33:47know how hard it is for you. You probably don't show it on
- 1:33:50the outside. They might be looking at you
- 1:33:52thinking you look really good. Exactly.
- 1:33:57New York City half where Grant Fisher makes his debut, so
- 1:33:59again, very, very exciting prospect there.
- 1:34:04And domestically, Adelaide Invitational, the next of the
- 1:34:09Chemist Warehouse summer series over here.
- 1:34:12So some more outdoors results for to cover from an Australian
- 1:34:16perspective. Should be a good week of racing
- 1:34:20coming up. Yeah, it's a good time to be a
- 1:34:23fan of the sport. It's a good time to be listening
- 1:34:26to Easy Double Podcast. It's a good time to be alive.
- 1:34:31Good time to get some bed and wake up to some Nania.
- 1:34:34It's a good time to end the episode.
- 1:34:36Thanks, everyone. We'll see you next week.
- 1:34:38See. You mate, see you guys easy.
