- 0:14Speaker 1: Thanks for having us today. We are Stormflower, Sydney based
- 0:21Speaker 1: rock rock metal band. We've been around for you know,
- 0:26Speaker 1: a year and a half, really working for year and
- 0:28Speaker 1: a half.
- 0:29Speaker 2: We just recorded something.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Late last year and we're very keen to play some
- 0:35Speaker 1: gigs in Sydney. So I'm Julian the drummer, as Owen
- 0:41Speaker 1: lead guitar, and there's Robert here who is the lead
- 0:44Speaker 1: singer and guitar as well, and we've got Yvonne who's
- 0:49Speaker 1: the bass.
- 0:50Speaker 2: So we're just.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Four beautiful gentlemen. Thanks for joining us to start today.
- 0:56Speaker 4: Yeah, thanks for having us.
- 0:58Speaker 3: My pleasure so start.
- 1:00Speaker 5: I have today released your new song Coder guys, so
- 1:03Speaker 5: tell us more about it musically and then what you
- 1:05Speaker 5: were going for with it.
- 1:09Speaker 4: Yeah, Well, Coda is a it's a bit of a journey, yes,
- 1:13Speaker 4: it's it's touching on a few elements around.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Where we are and the whole cycle of.
- 1:24Speaker 4: Life thing and in reference to Coder and there's ol coda,
- 1:31Speaker 4: et cetera, when we return to return to start in
- 1:35Speaker 4: that sense and trying to figure it out along the way,
- 1:39Speaker 4: try try to get some help along the way to
- 1:43Speaker 4: help make sense of it all as well. So it's
- 1:45Speaker 4: that kind of and you'll you'll notice there's a few
- 1:48Speaker 4: references throughout the song in regards to the whole spinning around,
- 1:52Speaker 4: everything spinning around us, and we're just trying to, you know,
- 1:56Speaker 4: stop the world from spinning for a moment so we
- 1:59Speaker 4: can actually capture what what the hell is going on
- 2:02Speaker 4: and try and make some sense of it all.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Good luck with that, Yeah, And I think I think, Chris,
- 2:08Speaker 1: the song musically speaking, is for us. It's kind of
- 2:11Speaker 1: a strong song this, you know, it's it's all our
- 2:17Speaker 1: songs out written by by us, and but you know,
- 2:21Speaker 1: we've got inspirations from from lots of lots of bands,
- 2:26Speaker 1: you know, from the eighties, nineties.
- 2:28Speaker 2: And so on.
- 2:29Speaker 1: So I think that song is quite strong musically as well.
- 2:34Speaker 1: So we hope that the public will enjoy that one.
- 2:37Speaker 5: Oh no, excuse my ignorance, you guys, but it's just
- 2:40Speaker 5: your first song that you released, full Stoppers only the
- 2:42Speaker 5: first one you release your ex music.
- 2:45Speaker 4: It's our first song full Stops as Stormflower, like Julie
- 2:51Speaker 4: was saying, we've we've only been together for the past yeah, yeah,
- 2:58Speaker 4: to eighty months. And Stormflower as a band only came
- 3:01Speaker 4: to fruition really as a name earlier this year, so
- 3:05Speaker 4: it is our first release of Stormflower, and definitely our
- 3:09Speaker 4: first with ex music as well.
- 3:12Speaker 5: No, so along those lines like why is this particular
- 3:15Speaker 5: song I guess to launch this phase of your career?
- 3:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean Julian saying we've got a few influencers
- 3:24Speaker 4: there that as most bands do obviously, that range across
- 3:29Speaker 4: a few things, but it kind of has a few
- 3:31Speaker 4: elements of everything we like. We've got a few softer
- 3:36Speaker 4: ones on there as well, So Rob's actually like classically
- 3:40Speaker 4: trained pianist, and we wanted to you know, capture some
- 3:45Speaker 4: of those elements in some of the songs as well because.
- 3:49Speaker 2: It's still good music.
- 3:50Speaker 4: So we've got a couple of softer ones where we
- 3:52Speaker 4: bring that in, but coder is also got some heavier
- 3:58Speaker 4: that that introduces us as a band and most of
- 4:05Speaker 4: what we cover as well, So as.
- 4:09Speaker 5: A band, I guess sort of in your infancy still,
- 4:11Speaker 5: like what does signing with someone like X music do
- 4:15Speaker 5: for the band? Like, what sorts of things is it
- 4:16Speaker 5: open up for you?
- 4:18Speaker 2: It's a good question.
- 4:19Speaker 1: I mean it's a very early stage, Chris right now,
- 4:22Speaker 1: but we're really hoping to, like we said before, play
- 4:27Speaker 1: some gigs in Sydney, potentially into state, you know, talking
- 4:34Speaker 1: to people like you, reaching and building an audience, playing
- 4:38Speaker 1: with other bands. You know, Spotify could be interesting, but
- 4:44Speaker 1: really we can to do some live. We are a
- 4:48Speaker 1: live band, I think first and foremost. We've got quite
- 4:53Speaker 1: lots of energy on stage. So we hope that X
- 4:56Speaker 1: Music will allow us to grow little bit.
- 5:01Speaker 5: Yeah, and so a lot of those lines like how
- 5:04Speaker 5: important is it to be on an Australian label as
- 5:07Speaker 5: an Australian band like you see so many bands these
- 5:09Speaker 5: days just simon someone from overseas that they probably don't
- 5:12Speaker 5: even know what they look like, you know, but people
- 5:15Speaker 5: that did house is probably probably the way to go
- 5:17Speaker 5: in it.
- 5:18Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean huge privilege in that sense.
- 5:23Speaker 6: And it's great to have something and someone like X
- 5:25Speaker 6: Music who's who's around and actually trying to promote buzzic bands.
- 5:28Speaker 4: And yeah, I mean, just to carry on with what
- 5:35Speaker 4: Rob saying, you know, well, it's hugely appreciative of EX Music,
- 5:40Speaker 4: you know, what they're doing for us, but what they're
- 5:42Speaker 4: doing for the local music scene as a whole, because
- 5:46Speaker 4: if it wasn't for companies like that, you know, it
- 5:50Speaker 4: just makes it harder for local bands to get a
- 5:54Speaker 4: foothold to get exposure, to get their music out there.
- 5:58Speaker 4: And yeah, I mean it's hard enough already the live
- 6:01Speaker 4: music scene, you know, probably in most cities across Australia.
- 6:06Speaker 7: Uh.
- 6:06Speaker 4: And it's there's a way that you know, we can
- 6:09Speaker 4: support the local music scene through being with X Music.
- 6:13Speaker 4: We see it as a win win because it helps us,
- 6:17Speaker 4: but it also helps them to keep the flame alive locally.
- 6:22Speaker 5: Sure, but enough about Tim and X Music because you'll
- 6:25Speaker 5: get a big edge soon. We'll get back on you guys, like,
- 6:28Speaker 5: is paid a standalone scene or is it part of
- 6:31Speaker 5: a bigger picture.
- 6:33Speaker 4: It's the first release of our upcoming EP.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Right, what more can you tell us about that? Yeah?
- 6:39Speaker 2: So that there's a few other songs, Chris.
- 6:42Speaker 1: On the EP, there's there's four songs in total, I think,
- 6:46Speaker 1: sorry five. I think they're all very strong, Like oh
- 6:49Speaker 1: when said before, There's two or three songs that are
- 6:52Speaker 1: pretty heavy, and then there's two other songs that are
- 6:55Speaker 1: a bit.
- 6:55Speaker 2: More I guess accessible to the general public.
- 6:58Speaker 1: But we we're trying to convey a lot of different
- 7:03Speaker 1: emotions in these songs. So there'll be four more songs
- 7:07Speaker 1: released over the next few weeks.
- 7:10Speaker 5: And as a like as a band, just sort of
- 7:13Speaker 5: starting out, like what sorts of things is discuss going
- 7:16Speaker 5: into your debut album or your debut rep like just
- 7:19Speaker 5: check on everything you've got and hope for the best,
- 7:22Speaker 5: or do you do you think about things a bit
- 7:23Speaker 5: more and work through your songs?
- 7:26Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 7:27Speaker 2: I think Yeah, it's a good question.
- 7:28Speaker 1: I want to I'd love you to expand on that,
- 7:30Speaker 1: but I'd like to say that, Yeah, we think a lot.
- 7:33Speaker 1: I think we tend to overthink a lot things, not
- 7:35Speaker 1: from a commercial perspective, but from a musical perspective.
- 7:38Speaker 2: We're very committed to music. You know, we've been playing
- 7:41Speaker 2: music for years now, and we think.
- 7:44Speaker 1: A lot about the meaning of the words and what
- 7:46Speaker 1: we talk about, like oh, when touched on or when
- 7:50Speaker 1: you want to talk about that a little bit, because yeah,
- 7:52Speaker 1: it's a very meaningful sort of.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Set of songs. Yeah.
- 7:59Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a hard balance to strike, getting the subject,
- 8:04Speaker 4: the meaning, the music to all compliment each other. And yeah,
- 8:07Speaker 4: we probably are guilty of overdoing it. And as far
- 8:12Speaker 4: as we're a bit of perfectionists, we like to take
- 8:16Speaker 4: our time, so you know, if there's something we're not
- 8:20Speaker 4: happy we we'll rework it, probably more than it should be,
- 8:25Speaker 4: but that's just the way we work. And yeah, it
- 8:28Speaker 4: can take us a bit longer to get stuff out,
- 8:31Speaker 4: but we want to be happy once it does come out.
- 8:33Speaker 4: We want to be able to sign off on that
- 8:35Speaker 4: and put it out there with pride.
- 8:39Speaker 5: I suppose that goes back to the last question a
- 8:40Speaker 5: little bit too, Like having a label with you, you've
- 8:42Speaker 5: got someone to bounce that sort of stuff off, Like
- 8:44Speaker 5: if it was left to your own devices, you probably
- 8:47Speaker 5: would take forever, and.
- 8:48Speaker 3: You know, like get it to where you think it's perfect.
- 8:50Speaker 5: But someone independent to the band I guess listen to
- 8:54Speaker 5: and they say, look, iuys, you ain't going to get
- 8:56Speaker 5: that any better, get it out and let people listen
- 8:58Speaker 5: to it.
- 8:59Speaker 4: Yeah, hundred percent. And it's not only that it's having
- 9:03Speaker 4: that objective pair of ears is fantastic, but also like
- 9:08Speaker 4: little things like what we might think is how the
- 9:10Speaker 4: greatest song on the EP and we want to get
- 9:12Speaker 4: that one out there first, doesn't necessarily mean that it
- 9:15Speaker 4: is or to someone else's is they think? And that's
- 9:18Speaker 4: where you know. Ex music has been great as well
- 9:20Speaker 4: in helping us put together from a listener's point of view,
- 9:25Speaker 4: what is the ideal singles to get out there, which
- 9:29Speaker 4: one first and next, et cetera. So all of those
- 9:32Speaker 4: elements really helped to kind of guide us along the
- 9:35Speaker 4: way too.
- 9:36Speaker 5: There's a lot to it in you know, like going
- 9:38Speaker 5: through high school and shit, you're thinking about being in
- 9:40Speaker 5: a band and all you got to do is you
- 9:41Speaker 5: get to write record music and you're going to throw
- 9:43Speaker 5: it out there. But when it actually comes down to
- 9:44Speaker 5: the nitty gritty, there's a lot of behind the scenes
- 9:46Speaker 5: stuff people just don't know about it.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Totally. Yeah, even the recording process, you know, it just
- 9:54Speaker 4: and all the detail that goes into that, you know,
- 9:58Speaker 4: from setting up to recording to producing too, laying it
- 10:03Speaker 4: all and you know, then you've got all the post
- 10:05Speaker 4: production and artwork and everything like that. There's there's so
- 10:08Speaker 4: many moving parts to it all. And by the time we,
- 10:11Speaker 4: you know, finally get to hit the stage, there's probably
- 10:14Speaker 4: how many pairs of hands have been like involved, you know,
- 10:18Speaker 4: along the way.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Yeah, on the recording critics, we actually recorded live. We
- 10:22Speaker 1: wanted to capture that live sound or I did a
- 10:27Speaker 1: couple of takes on the drums and then we used
- 10:30Speaker 1: that and then we started to integrate guitars, bass, and
- 10:33Speaker 1: then Rob's voice and backing vocals. And we worked for
- 10:38Speaker 1: days and days at the studio to try to have
- 10:41Speaker 1: a discent product that people can enjoy. But we believe
- 10:47Speaker 1: it's only the start of a journey.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:50Speaker 5: People these days too, where people have listened to the
- 10:54Speaker 5: electronic stuff and you know, all the perfect, polished and
- 10:57Speaker 5: it was starting to become the normal.
- 10:59Speaker 3: But people now they're starting to come.
- 11:00Speaker 5: Back and they can tell if you're recorded it live,
- 11:02Speaker 5: or they can tell that you haven't overproduced it and stuff,
- 11:05Speaker 5: and it's good to see that appreciation of music actually
- 11:08Speaker 5: coming back.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 11:10Speaker 4: Yeah, that's it. Yeah, And that's the whole idea of
- 11:14Speaker 4: you know, just trying to capture us as a band,
- 11:16Speaker 4: us as a sound. No click tracks on any of
- 11:19Speaker 4: the recordings we've done, so it's all just very raw
- 11:22Speaker 4: and just capturing the true element of us along the way.
- 11:26Speaker 4: So and you know, any imperfections like that is actually
- 11:31Speaker 4: what we're looking forward to help give it that character
- 11:34Speaker 4: as well.
- 11:36Speaker 5: Readden through your bio and your press release, guys, like
- 11:39Speaker 5: it describes your sound as gen defying and experimental, Like
- 11:43Speaker 5: can you elaborate on that for us?
- 11:46Speaker 2: Yeah? I guess we've got lots of influences.
- 11:53Speaker 1: I think there's bands that we love in common that
- 11:55Speaker 1: are quite experimental as well.
- 11:58Speaker 2: You know, we've got a lot of.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Bands from the sixties, seventies, eighties, nineties that we love.
- 12:07Speaker 1: So we try to do something that's a bit unique,
- 12:09Speaker 1: mixing different jaws. And I guess when we mean experimental,
- 12:15Speaker 1: that means musically but also spiritually, maybe trying to challenge
- 12:20Speaker 1: ideas and concepts. You know, I think the world is
- 12:25Speaker 1: very asepticized, and we try to offer something that's a
- 12:29Speaker 1: little bit different. But it'll be up to the to
- 12:32Speaker 1: the audience, you know, to to to experience that, you know.
- 12:37Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, we're not afraid to mix different sounds together
- 12:42Speaker 6: as well to try and get through the message of
- 12:44Speaker 6: the song.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Right.
- 12:45Speaker 6: So for example, piano, we had piano. Originally, we've talked
- 12:50Speaker 6: about it and it was like, well, no, you know,
- 12:52Speaker 6: it's not really our thing. We want to be heavier,
- 12:53Speaker 6: we like heavier music. And then after a while, well,
- 12:56Speaker 6: actually that works really well. We try it, we put
- 12:59Speaker 6: it in, we see if it brings a different dynamic
- 13:01Speaker 6: to the sound. So that's really what we're after there.
- 13:04Speaker 6: You know, we don't mind going across genres and if
- 13:06Speaker 6: you mixed some metal with some jazz, if it sounds
- 13:09Speaker 6: good and conveys the emotion and that that's something we
- 13:12Speaker 6: stick to and we honor that.
- 13:14Speaker 5: Yeah, you've mentioned live shows a couple of times, guys,
- 13:17Speaker 5: So if you got any book yet that the people
- 13:19Speaker 5: come and check out or Yeah.
- 13:21Speaker 6: So we've got something coming up in Newtown towards November
- 13:25Speaker 6: when we do the full EP launch. So pretty excited
- 13:27Speaker 6: about that. But we're just in the process now finished recording,
- 13:32Speaker 6: get it out there, get it all out on socials
- 13:34Speaker 6: to get the exposure, and then we'll line up some
- 13:37Speaker 6: gigs in the next couple of months to start start
- 13:39Speaker 6: pushing it and start showing everyone what we can do.
- 13:43Speaker 5: It's the best place for people to keep up. We've
- 13:44Speaker 5: what you doing and find out where you're playing.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Facebook.
- 13:47Speaker 1: We're on Facebook, Instagram, We've got a website, so there's
- 13:52Speaker 1: gote a different platforms.
- 13:55Speaker 2: We've got our website as.
- 13:56Speaker 6: Well, YouTube and tiktoks.
- 14:00Speaker 5: Yeah, very cool, that's pretty faire Spotify.
- 14:05Speaker 3: Well.
- 14:05Speaker 5: In the meantime, the song Coda is out now for
- 14:08Speaker 5: everyone to digest, and he's a cracker of the song guy,
- 14:10Speaker 5: So get behind the local talent and check it out,
- 14:13Speaker 5: and I'll see you guys at a gig somewhere in
- 14:16Speaker 5: the near future.
- 14:17Speaker 3: I'm guessing.
- 14:19Speaker 4: I appreciate it, thanks for your time, and yeah, I
- 14:22Speaker 4: hope you enjoy it. I'd hope to see you on
- 14:26Speaker 4: the road somewhere soon.
- 14:55Speaker 8: Start a storm river, good crow. I don't know.
- 15:22Speaker 7: What I do, still com so what hell?
- 15:49Speaker 9: Cause I don't want that's way, So what hell? I'm
- 16:03Speaker 9: not gonna wait, Mom.
- 16:25Speaker 10: Snool loud fred By.
- 16:30Speaker 8: Start living.
- 16:38Speaker 10: But I can't see that small floe that tree so
- 16:44Speaker 10: starts bending around around the time.
- 16:52Speaker 7: So help, I'm doll.
- 17:02Speaker 8: When SO count when they won?
- 17:32Speaker 11: No chill shot go chill shot.
- 17:51Speaker 7: One?
- 17:52Speaker 8: And so what help? So help? So help this way No,
- 18:58Speaker 8: so help
