Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome to the Vietnamese podcast today.
- 0:02[SPEAKER_01]: I have an old friend of mine actually really old friend of mine can from the Puriotics can is a dancer But recently can has done a lot of podcasting and the reason I bring that up is because it's super important
- 0:15[SPEAKER_01]: We need more podcasters.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_01]: And I've been saying that for last six years.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_01]: And Ken has actually done a really good job.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_01]: I've seen a lot of this stuff that you put out.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_01]: And I love it.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_01]: Come on, you.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_01]: We need more and more people like you.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you so much.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you so much.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_01]: You're going to be a great job.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_00]: I love it.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_01]: So.
- 0:36[SPEAKER_01]: As we are both covering so many things about our entertainment and stuff like that, I really, you know, just talking a lot about politics lately.
- 0:44[SPEAKER_01]: So we're going to deviate from politics and we're going to get into something more lighter, but nonetheless, super important to me, which is where
- 0:55[SPEAKER_01]: are in the Vietnamese diaspora is going.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_01]: And you mentioned that you really stick to it being in your bubble.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_01]: But that's also a very powerful thing to.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_01]: And because you are a podcaster, you should be asking me anything you want.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_01]: And this, that's funny.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_01]: Is no, that's your job.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_00]: And my job, okay.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: So what I primarily focus on as a person that lives in Orange County and I'm an artist.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_00]: I mainly focus on what is going to pay the bills like let's be real like this is a tough time I think everybody's in right now right but as a creative it's even tougher because part of you wants to express, create and just make what you want to make and another part of you is like how do I feed myself how do I budget for this month how do I run a business like all the things that you need to sustain yourself so that's kind of what my mind splits
- 1:52[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_00]: And I try to find like what's the best of both worlds.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_00]: So that's kind of made in my main focus.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't know other people out there are kind of thinking about the same thing or struggling with the same problems.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, that's that's where I've been done.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_01]: All right, let me ask you something.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_01]: This idea of being paid for our art, right, yeah, where did that come from?
- 2:15[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_00]: Where where does it come from?
- 2:18[SPEAKER_01]: All right, better, better.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, here's a better question.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_01]: What do you think?
- 2:22[SPEAKER_01]: The purpose of making your art is about for you.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_00]: The purpose for me is there's two sides to it.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_00]: There's always two sides to everything, right?
- 2:33[SPEAKER_00]: One side is for them, one side is for me in terms of expressing and feelings, like exchanging feelings, right?
- 2:42[SPEAKER_00]: Because for example,
- 2:44[SPEAKER_00]: I had a taste of this the first time ever stepped foot on a stage and I go, all right, let's do this dancing that we've always loved doing like me and my friends we we love practicing we love dancing and we have fun doing it we laugh and everything but as soon as we step on the stage and share it everybody is kind of
- 3:01[SPEAKER_00]: Now you're in it on it too, you know, you get to share with us.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_00]: So that's kind of the feedback loop that we get as performers, as artists, is it kind of makes us feel good, it makes them feel good, and it makes us want to keep doing that, right?
- 3:15[SPEAKER_00]: And so in terms of going back to the payment thing, I feel like that's more so of like, let's just support these people so we can continue this positive feedback loop of like sharing our art, making people happy, you know?
- 3:30[SPEAKER_01]: I've been thinking about this question for a long time.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_01]: And recently, I think I've touched upon it in a way that I'm becoming more satisfied with the answers of it.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_00]: OK, what is it?
- 3:43[SPEAKER_01]: Our obsessions as artists is what connects us to our audience, right?
- 3:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_01]: So the problem is this.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_01]: we have a lot of sessions that come from our childhood traumas and whatever, like things that happen in your childhood that for better for worse, positive or negative, they stick with you and then they become obsessions.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_01]: And then out of session for an artist becomes your artwork or your canvas and what you're doing, right?
- 4:13[SPEAKER_01]: As a dancer, as a painter, podcasters, we're scratching this edge.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_01]: Now, here's the problem.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_01]: fuck with your obsession.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_01]: They ain't nobody mind shit.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_01]: That's the problem.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_01]: Now, when you look at like Picasso, when you look at these big painters or dolly or, you know, freedom, you have whole countries and whole nationalities like Mexico, buying the art, even after
- 4:44[SPEAKER_01]: the physical renditions of the artist's obsession because they can fuck with whatever happened they're like, they could see it, they can be like, I see what's going on there.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_01]: I really identify with it because when I look at it, I remember my grandma's making tortillas.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_01]: Or I remember when I was a kid, my in the front of my house, my mom had like eight months sale, my pants.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_01]: So all of these
- 5:12[SPEAKER_01]: Now, the problem is if you don't have enough people who are obsessed with the general vicinity of that art, then you're not gonna have a market.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that is really the problem.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_00]: I think it comes down to the way you package things and how you communicate things, like which is why marketing is a thing, right?
- 5:30[SPEAKER_00]: And that's one of the things I learned, especially from my own journey, is you can be great at something, but if you don't know how to share it.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_00]: Because they're sharing, and then there's how to share it.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_00]: And I think if you don't understand that, that's the way to communicate to your audience, then you're not going to be able to get people to talk with you.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 5:52[SPEAKER_00]: That's all it is.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_00]: It comes out of communication out the end of the day.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_01]: And then it's like, how strategic and how obsessed are you with pushing your art?
- 6:01[SPEAKER_01]: There's a woman in Jane Lee.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_01]: She's a Korean sort of musician.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if you follow her.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_01]: She's Korean on Instagram.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_01]: marketing your art is one to one now, if it takes you eight hours to make the art, you better be spending eight or more hours marketing it.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_00]: That's very interesting.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_00]: I never thought of it that way because I feel like they're two, they're very two separate things so
- 6:30[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes if you get really lucky or you just have the vision, sometimes you don't really have to think about the marketing if your product just so happens to resonate with a lot of people.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_00]: For example, I want to use myself as an example because that's my best experience is we didn't think about
- 6:52[SPEAKER_00]: who are we going to market this dance for?
- 6:55[SPEAKER_00]: We didn't think about like what is our age rate?
- 6:58[SPEAKER_00]: What are the demographics?
- 6:59[SPEAKER_00]: We didn't think about any of that.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_00]: We literally just did.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_00]: We just were obsessed with doing what we loved, right?
- 7:06[SPEAKER_00]: And sometimes like you said, if it's strong enough, it will resonate regardless.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_00]: So those are,
- 7:12[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like those are very rare cases, right, as out of the ordinary, because so many people are artists that don't get recognized, right?
- 7:20[SPEAKER_00]: And then they, they share this thing where, like, oh, man, I just wanted to be an artist, but now I have to create content.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_00]: And then they're like crying while they're like, it's a joke, but like, they do that.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_00]: I see a couple of those where,
- 7:34[SPEAKER_00]: like they're just trying to get their word out there, but they have to conform to today's social media norms and everything to get that out, which sucks.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_00]: But I feel like that's just the time we're in today.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_00]: But the thing I like about that is it kind of forces a change in the art world.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_00]: So things don't always stay the same.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_01]: You know, going back to you, doing probiotics,
- 8:03[SPEAKER_00]: But you know what everybody's obsession was at that time?
- 8:06[SPEAKER_00]: Let me think, let me think.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_00]: This was 2007.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_01]: Do you know why we all, because I lived it with you at that time?
- 8:15[SPEAKER_01]: Do you know why we all fucked with that?
- 8:20[SPEAKER_00]: I don't.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure though.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_00]: Well, what's your, what did you guys decide to?
- 8:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_01]: We were not being seen.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_01]: And if you think about it, it was like the advent of like social media, maybe YouTube, I can't remember.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_01]: That was the two years.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_01]: To 2005.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_01]: It was just when YouTube was starting and it was just like all these kids were like oh my god These Asian dudes these Vietnamese dudes right two of you were Vietnamese out of like five or like three They were the Latinos so all Asian but yeah all Asian so all these Asians all across the country were looking at these guys I mean there was you and a few other guys We were like there was pre-autics and a few other dance crews who were looking at were like
- 9:04[SPEAKER_01]: we are being seen, you know, we're not just like nerds, we're not just like, you know, bookworms and smart mathematical people.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_01]: These are guys who are like physically doing their thing and you guys were all handsome, you're still handsome.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_00]: We were handsome kids.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_01]: And some kids, yeah, handsome, yeah, young men.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_01]: And I think all the girls and the boys of that time
- 9:33[SPEAKER_01]: That was 20 years ago almost, do you think about it?
- 9:35[SPEAKER_01]: We were being seen and I remember that was before the six to six night market kicked off in 2012.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_01]: So it was like five years before that where you know this stuff was like heating up.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yes brand new.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think due to the fact that YouTube was a big thing and then Instagram came out eventually like those.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_00]: That was the real reason why we were seeing it the platforms changed right used to be TV so we were in the middle of TV to YouTube like we were in that era and actually feel like Every era there's going to be a change in something like that so if you are the very start of that or you're the middle of the transition I think that's kind of where you know you can actually do something that that's meaningful because then you
- 10:20[SPEAKER_00]: you ride this new wave like, for example, tick-tock.
- 10:22[SPEAKER_00]: Reels like this new format, right?
- 10:24[SPEAKER_00]: Any creator that started right at the beginning of that, that understood it right away was able to capitalize off of it now, you know?
- 10:32[SPEAKER_01]: That's why I think like the idea of luck and anything you do, it's not just 50% to me anymore.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_01]: The order I get, the more I'm like,
- 10:44[SPEAKER_01]: 70% of what you do, you know, you have to be, you have to do it.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_01]: I think the rule for me and the way I'm teaching my kids is like, if you ain't obsessed with it, don't do it.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_01]: If you're obsessed with it and you can't do anything but that thing, you have to keep doing it because eventually somebody's gonna pick it up or nobody will pick it up and you'll die and then if it gets picked up after you die, pots to mislead.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_01]: That's the word I can't pass.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_00]: I can't pass the Post-Humus Post-Humus.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_00]: Something like that.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_00]: I know what you're saying.
- 11:17[SPEAKER_01]: After you die, your art blows up like a, you know, all these like dolly and then all these like big, big artists, right?
- 11:26[SPEAKER_00]: Which sucks, by the way.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's good for the world, but it sucks for them because they never got to feel the success.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_00]: But maybe that's what they weren't even chasing.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_01]: They weren't chasing.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_01]: They were chasing their obsession.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's more important.
- 11:38[SPEAKER_01]: Like for me, I don't think about
- 11:42[SPEAKER_01]: How many views I'm getting with you or whoever comes in?
- 11:44[SPEAKER_01]: I just, I'm literally, I'm chasing the essence of who my guests are.
- 11:50[SPEAKER_01]: So I can ingest the essence of these Vietnamese people because I'm doing a podcast about the Vietnamese and I need to know Erica, them looking cranny that comes from the Vietnamese DNA, whether they're from Vietnam or Germany or America, I want to know all of it.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_00]: If people care to know they care to know if they don't, right?
- 12:13[SPEAKER_00]: Whatever.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_00]: Well, either way, I still think it's important to talk about it, because like no one else is doing it, really.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_00]: Like you just gotta be the guy to do it, you know?
- 12:21[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's, you're filling in the gap, you're finding your niche and everything, and which goes back to marketing, it's just great.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_00]: Like if you're a brand new artist, like find something that nobody else does, like that's how you do it, right?
- 12:34[SPEAKER_00]: But how do you know that?
- 12:35[SPEAKER_00]: You have to start with what already exists, told, right?
- 12:40[SPEAKER_00]: take the same approach to my art as well.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_00]: I don't make things from scratch, right?
- 12:46[SPEAKER_00]: There's already recipes that work.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_00]: So you take the recipe that you like, you steal, right?
- 12:51[SPEAKER_00]: But then you do a your way and you do it in a way that makes sense where now it's brand new, you know?
- 12:57[SPEAKER_01]: And I think V-pop, K-pop, J-pop, music from China, pop,
- 13:05[SPEAKER_01]: all have to go through these iterations of like, you practice and you copy K-pop in the case of Vietnam right now.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_01]: You copy it, you try to do what they do and you try to perfect it.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_01]: And then eventually you get bored because you're like, I don't want to sound like them anymore.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_01]: I always sound like me and you start doing it.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_01]: You're a way and then it becomes V-pop and here's like, oh my god, this V-pop stuff's so new, so different, so full of flavor of Vietnamese people.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's really just the key.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and sometimes it's, it is an obsession, but also sometimes it's inspiration.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't always have to be like, like, oh, I need to get this done.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I need it, you know, like, Zoda, you know, that sometimes it's like, wow, they're doing it so dope.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_00]: I wish I could.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_00]: Like have my own version of whatever that is, you know, and that's kind of what feels me sometimes is it's the inspiration usually and and inspiration that comes from learning because what I learned the most was
- 14:05[SPEAKER_00]: If you don't do research and you're not putting yourself into these pockets of like different artists or you know different genres like you got to explore a little right you have to kind of branch out and not just stay in a bubble even though I'm in my own bubble, but I do like to partake in certain things like I do listen to kpop I listen to a lot of EDM I listen to a lot of like underground stuff that people don't really know about because for me I just follow the sound or I follow the thing.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_00]: that makes me, that, that, that, that, that, you know, tickles my fancy, you know what I mean?
- 14:38[SPEAKER_01]: So you got into podcasting a while now.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_01]: And what have you learned about the process of artists and people in the creative world?
- 14:52[SPEAKER_00]: I definitely learned that you have to say the right thing in front of the right people in order for it to work, and sometimes there's a element of luck involved.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_00]: For example, clips, podcasts, clips are the thing that go viral, right?
- 15:09[SPEAKER_00]: And how do you know what's going to go viral?
- 15:12[SPEAKER_00]: You don't.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_00]: You just play the lottery, like it's like, hey, let's just talk about what we like and whatever hits it'll hit, right?
- 15:18[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure you've experienced that, right?
- 15:20[SPEAKER_00]: So you just never know.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_00]: So that's the thing I learned is you don't control your outcome.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_00]: You control your input.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_00]: You control what you can actually do, what you make and how consistent you are and like the topics you want to talk about.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_00]: You can those are all within your control, but will they guarantee your success?
- 15:39[SPEAKER_00]: It's not a good team, you know.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's scary to me, the most I think about.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_01]: I'm terrified of this, you know, I have friends that are creators and they've been out of for years and they don't move the needle.
- 15:52[SPEAKER_01]: And it's just like I look at them and I'm like, yeah, I know why you're not moving the needle and I don't think anybody's telling you why you're not moving the needle and I'm like,
- 16:02[SPEAKER_01]: on a big scale, then you know artists who are really moving needles, it's because of the charisma, it's because of the originality, it's because they're coming at it with the point of view, and then I look at myself and I'm like, okay, well, I'm like a few thousand, you know, whatever, and you know, I feel like I'm getting traction, but I know I'm not that guy, but I also know I'm not that guy either at the bottom, and what scares me the most is like,
- 16:26[SPEAKER_01]: Being obsessed with that, and not allowing myself to be me.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_00]: Ooh, like changing your identity of what you speak about and what you put yourself out.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_01]: Being more intentional, right?
- 16:40[SPEAKER_00]: Do I need to be more intentional to get that level of like, you know,
- 16:51[SPEAKER_00]: pushing that needle, blowing up virality, like how obsessed are you with that versus how obsessed are you with your message of putting Vietnamese people out there, you know, doing it for the community like there's two you don't even fluctuates yeah some days when I have really.
- 17:12[SPEAKER_01]: popular guests on.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think about that stuff, right?
- 17:15[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_01]: But then when I want to like interview people that not a lot of people know about and I get these people on, it bothers me because I'm like, am I making the wrong mistake by inviting people only I want to hear about?
- 17:29[SPEAKER_01]: But it's not a mistake because that's my choice and it's my podcast and it's not
- 17:33[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just having a share with people.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_01]: But it's not like a business venture where daily I'm out selling robots in the right industry.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_01]: That's what I do.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_01]: Daily I'm doing that.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_01]: I'm selling a very specific thing to a very specific company.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_01]: But in this business or in the business of like this or the podcast, I mean, it's called Bala on the second TV.
- 17:57[SPEAKER_01]: Show me a piece.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_01]: that podcast is very directed at a specific group of people this right can go anywhere right right and and I love that freedom, but this is not where the money comes in.
- 18:11[SPEAKER_01]: I mean does come in I get sponsorship deals and stuff like that, but that's not where like a robot money or like you know other money.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah like I said like you just have to measure out like what do you care more about?
- 18:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, right
- 18:24[SPEAKER_00]: And it's okay sometimes to fluctuate because it just happens but I also think like let's say you are in a place where you envision this as like this is this has to pop off like because I put myself in in the shoes of
- 18:42[SPEAKER_00]: like, I need this to work.
- 18:44[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I need to light the fire under myself in order to push myself.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_00]: Why do you need it to work?
- 18:49[SPEAKER_00]: What is that podcast or what are you talking about?
- 18:52[SPEAKER_00]: Just anything that I do.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_00]: Like, my business of video editing, my podcast, like anything that I do, I have to tell myself, like, this needs to work.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_00]: And I put the pressure on myself, not
- 19:04[SPEAKER_00]: In a way where I'm like, oh, now I'm unhealthy.
- 19:06[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not eating.
- 19:07[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to the gym.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_00]: Like I still try to do work like balance, but I still also push the fact that like this needs to happen because I see it already like I'm the type of person where when I
- 19:20[SPEAKER_00]: have hope or like when I have a very like positive outlook on my projects and I see where it goes and how all the steps are there it just needs to happen like that's I'll just I'm just going to put 110% into that you know that's the type of where I work you know like all my eggs in one basket
- 19:36[SPEAKER_00]: because I've done the route where let's try this.
- 19:39[SPEAKER_00]: Let's try that.
- 19:40[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, nothing happened.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_00]: Let's move on to another thing.
- 19:43[SPEAKER_00]: This didn't work out.
- 19:44[SPEAKER_00]: Let's move on to another thing.
- 19:44[SPEAKER_00]: What the problem is when you keep doing that and you keep changing it up, like a natural entrepreneur would do, right?
- 19:52[SPEAKER_00]: then you're not going to be able to find consistency.
- 19:55[SPEAKER_00]: You're not going to be able to really put those hours into mastering something, right?
- 20:01[SPEAKER_00]: So because I look at dance and I go the only reason why I'm here was because I practice every day.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_00]: I put the hours in and I loved it that much, which is why sometimes I look back at the success we've had with Poryox and I go like,
- 20:16[SPEAKER_00]: No, I think we were supposed to be there because of the way we put things out, right?
- 20:21[SPEAKER_00]: And so, what I see the formula for success happened for one thing, I go, okay, let's apply it to podcasting, let's apply it to business, how can we get that same thing going, right?
- 20:33[SPEAKER_00]: And how do you feel about that parallel journey?
- 20:37[SPEAKER_00]: translate.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, for sure.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_00]: Because it's like you take the lessons of your past and you actually apply.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_00]: You have to actually apply because a lot of people go like, yeah, a failure is not a failure.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_00]: It's a lesson, blah, blah.
- 20:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it is a lesson if you actually put it to use, right?
- 20:54[SPEAKER_00]: That's a whole another like I'd say half of the work is believing it and half of the work is actually doing it.
- 21:00[SPEAKER_00]: Most people just go here and they only put like a little bit of effort into doing it.
- 21:06[SPEAKER_00]: Tell me some of the parallels between dancing and podcast and um Okay, so here's the thing when I first started.
- 21:14[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't know what I was doing What am I gonna talk about like I was very lost there was no there was no What do you call it foundation right but when I started dancing I had a teacher I had someone go hey do these moves like this
- 21:31[SPEAKER_00]: And that's why I was able to have more fun with it.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_00]: And I go, oh, because somebody showed me the way, now I get a head start.
- 21:38[SPEAKER_00]: And I feel more confident to do it and pursue it, right?
- 21:41[SPEAKER_00]: Podcasting, I actually did have some guidance.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_00]: I had a client that I was working with, Tiger Belly, right?
- 21:48[SPEAKER_00]: Bobby Lee's podcast.
- 21:49[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_00]: And I've done that podcast for about.
- 21:52[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know since 2019 so it's been a while and because I have the experience there It's a big podcast and I told myself like this guy works with celebrities He interviews the biggest podcast.
- 22:06[SPEAKER_00]: There's he's been on Joe Rogan like number one right podcasting like I'm working with this guy
- 22:13[SPEAKER_00]: I have no excuse to not start a podcast.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_00]: Like I have the experience and I have the skill to edit this level of whatever podcast.
- 22:22[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm like, well, if I don't pursue it, it's kind of like you're throwing something away.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't want to do that, right?
- 22:29[SPEAKER_00]: This doesn't make sense.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_00]: So so that's kind of like my leg up in terms of starting.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_01]: Do you find that that leg up has put you on the map?
- 22:43[SPEAKER_00]: half and half because a lot of people don't know that I work for Tiger Belly right work for Tiger Belly.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_00]: I do and the thing is I'm a more behind the camera person when it comes to editing and when it comes to working on YouTube stuff so when I put myself out in public I kind of see it starting something brand new because they don't know me for talking they know me for dancing.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_00]: Right, and they only know me as a part of this group, which now I'm by myself, right, and there are episodes where I have like the old members come back and stuff, which is it just dropped recently, but yeah, so it still feels like I'm starting at zero because when you start a brand new channel, you start a new Instagram page like you are essentially starting from zero followers, right, and even if I have my own follow up on my personal, it doesn't.
- 23:33[SPEAKER_00]: automatically give me that success, you know what I mean?
- 23:36[SPEAKER_00]: Like I have like 20 something thousand followers on my Instagram, which is not a lot to begin with.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_00]: If you're thinking of like Tiger Belly numbers, right?
- 23:46[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm like, okay, that's like kind of my main thing that I'm like word about is like, who's going to listen to this?
- 23:52[SPEAKER_00]: How am I going to get the word out if I have a very small following?
- 23:55[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't make sense.
- 23:56[SPEAKER_00]: So I have to research learn like what's the formula for getting your stuff out?
- 24:03[SPEAKER_00]: What is the formula for me so YouTube has an algorithm every platform has an algorithm right and there's a lot of different strategies But the first strategy I tried for my podcast was let's just make five reals or Shorts all the same thing five clips based off of the law before
- 24:21[SPEAKER_00]: Right, the long form.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just going to upload that weekly and not think about it.
- 24:26[SPEAKER_00]: Just put it out there.
- 24:27[SPEAKER_00]: That's strategy strategy was strategy two was how are people to see it.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just going to put five clips a week on YouTube Instagram and TikTok every week.
- 24:37[SPEAKER_00]: Just put it out.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_00]: Put it out.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_00]: Don't even think about what's going to go viral.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_00]: Just put it out and then eventually the data comes back to you and you go after a few months.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_00]: You go, oh, this clip didn't really well.
- 24:48[SPEAKER_00]: What did we talk about?
- 24:49[SPEAKER_00]: O.C.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_00]: Fasten the Furious, we talked about dancing, we talked about whatever, and then I start to find like, okay, this works, this does not work at all, and then, okay, these type of guests do really well for my audience and these times don't, so you see how it becomes like an experiment and you kind of just
- 25:07[SPEAKER_00]: trial and error a little bit, but the main thing that that where people stop is the posting every week, you need a post And you can't do that if you can't edit five clips a week.
- 25:19[SPEAKER_00]: You can't edit a one-long episode a week Don't even think about the other thing.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because then like that part I can control because I already have experienced editing I have full control over that so I'm not worried about that so that's like my strategy for that.
- 25:34[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah
- 25:35[SPEAKER_01]: I love it.
- 25:36[SPEAKER_01]: I always wondered why there weren't more podcasters in our space.
- 25:43[SPEAKER_00]: I think because it's hard for anyone to build a new habit.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_00]: It's like going to the gym.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_00]: Like how many times have you been to the gym consistently?
- 25:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, I did this for a month and the next month.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_00]: You're just like, I don't feel like going to the consistently gym.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, I try to be.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_00]: So we talk about that right now.
- 25:58[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_00]: Break it down.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_00]: Let's go.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_01]: This idea of consistency, I think you and I share now.
- 26:04[SPEAKER_01]: And I mean, I kind of suspected that.
- 26:06[SPEAKER_01]: But I'm very consistent with Jim.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, might not look like it.
- 26:13[SPEAKER_01]: But the point is this, most mornings, if I'm not traveling, I'm in the gym at five, five, 30.
- 26:19[SPEAKER_01]: Five, five, 30, why so early?
- 26:21[SPEAKER_01]: I got to take my kids school at 7.45, and it's like a 30 minute thing, you know, makes sense.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_01]: So then, and then I go to work, or I get to podcasts, I get to do things.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_01]: But what I've learned is this,
- 26:37[SPEAKER_01]: your body and your brain is always gonna say, I don't wanna do this.
- 26:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 26:42[SPEAKER_01]: It's always gonna say that.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_01]: But what I've learned over the years is like, oh my God, once I finish, I can't think myself enough.
- 26:51[SPEAKER_01]: So what I do is, while I'm in the gym now, I have a prayer that I read between sets.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_01]: It's a prayer gratitude.
- 27:00[SPEAKER_01]: Ooh.
- 27:01[SPEAKER_01]: And I just read it in between sets.
- 27:02[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm never,
- 27:05[SPEAKER_01]: not thankful about the life that I'm living that entire day.
- 27:09[SPEAKER_01]: So it makes me want to go back day in and day out, day in and day out, to continue living a very grateful life of me selling, me doing my work in and fail, me doing my work in podcasting or in business and food business,
- 27:22[SPEAKER_01]: me sitting here.
- 27:24[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like living in gratitude right now.
- 27:25[SPEAKER_01]: And then it allows me to come back daily for whatever I got to do.
- 27:30[SPEAKER_01]: Do you feel like you are very spiritual person naturally?
- 27:34[SPEAKER_01]: No, I became a more spiritual person.
- 27:36[SPEAKER_01]: I went through some shit a few years ago that somebody took a baseball bat 20s, you know, felt like, yeah, yeah, yeah, they felt like and then I was like, I was at that.
- 27:48[SPEAKER_01]: I couldn't even sleep on most nights and I was like,
- 27:52[SPEAKER_01]: God, if you are out there which I know you are you gotta be out there because so many people are fucking praying to you You gotta be out there.
- 27:58[SPEAKER_01]: I was like if
- 28:00[SPEAKER_01]: You're there, I'm going to start praying every day.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_01]: And once I start, I will never stop if you change my life.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_00]: And life starts to change, man.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_00]: You believe that it worked.
- 28:12[SPEAKER_01]: That's the manifestation, because there's some quantum energy going on, right?
- 28:18[SPEAKER_00]: I really think it comes down to your intentions, which is why it's very important to practice.
- 28:25[SPEAKER_00]: What are you grateful for when you want for your life?
- 28:27[SPEAKER_00]: How do you want to go about doing things all of that matters?
- 28:31[SPEAKER_00]: And if you take a look at your own life like for anybody out there that wants to practice gratitude or practice just being present, right?
- 28:41[SPEAKER_00]: You have to look at these things from time to time and reflect a little, right?
- 28:45[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure it's like,
- 28:47[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't take that much time to do like I do it every night where see I was at time the time you got to be doing a daily yeah so I actually just talked to my friend about this is if you go to the gym right you got a there's already so many obstacles and mental barriers that you have to get through to even be consistent with the gym now imagine that but with meditation yeah like you have to do the same thing with your brain with your focus right this is like
- 29:15[SPEAKER_00]: the spiritual practice, the spiritual work comes with sitting down with yourself or walking whatever and really honing it on the being present, the meditation and then you can easily find your place of like, I'm grateful for this.
- 29:30[SPEAKER_00]: I'm so glad I'm here.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_00]: That's the thing that I tell myself the most is as soon as I sit down and I go, I look around and go, then I'm really glad I'm
- 29:43[SPEAKER_01]: like every day until it becomes automatic, right?
- 29:46[SPEAKER_00]: Because before, like, I never thought about those things.
- 29:48[SPEAKER_00]: So I didn't know why I was always like just in a bad place mentally.
- 29:53[SPEAKER_00]: And I just go like, you know, it's because I'm not actually trying to change that.
- 29:56[SPEAKER_00]: But was you start trying and you believe that you could change it?
- 29:58[SPEAKER_00]: It'll start to start.
- 30:00[SPEAKER_00]: It'll start kind of seeping in from your internal reality into the actual reality, you know?
- 30:08[SPEAKER_00]: One today's not even enough, really?
- 30:10[SPEAKER_01]: No, it's not enough.
- 30:11[SPEAKER_01]: I, you know, my dad used to go twice a day to church and I was like, so weird.
- 30:16[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, my God, the older I get, the more I see what this is all about.
- 30:20[SPEAKER_01]: Twice a day, once in the gym, meditation, sitting and doing my podcast with somebody.
- 30:26[SPEAKER_01]: Dad?
- 30:29[SPEAKER_01]: Like, add is a practice of my know, spiritual practice.
- 30:33[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that it has to be more than once a day.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_01]: You have to like train your brain like you said to think about being grateful.
- 30:40[SPEAKER_01]: All the time.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_00]: And also not just being grateful, but thinking about what do you want for yourself?
- 30:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_00]: What do you want for the people around you?
- 30:49[SPEAKER_00]: I do that too, where I go.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, like,
- 30:52[SPEAKER_00]: who are the people that are closest to me right now?
- 30:54[SPEAKER_00]: What can I do for them?
- 30:56[SPEAKER_00]: How can I make sure that everyone around me is good?
- 30:59[SPEAKER_00]: Because if I only focus on myself and because I've already do what I love, right?
- 31:05[SPEAKER_00]: If I only focus on myself and like create that shield, then I'm not living as a whole.
- 31:13[SPEAKER_00]: I'm living as a singular person.
- 31:15[SPEAKER_00]: And when you're by yourself, it's you're not as strong as
- 31:18[SPEAKER_00]: if you were with people, right?
- 31:20[SPEAKER_00]: So how do you take care of everyone around you too?
- 31:22[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's super important.
- 31:24[SPEAKER_00]: When you start thinking like that, especially when you start a business, like you have to think like that, where I'm providing jobs, I'm providing whatever these people need, even though it's for me, it's still, I have to still think about them.
- 31:39[SPEAKER_00]: like it's it's all one thing, you know, do you you you don't have kids yet, right?
- 31:43[SPEAKER_00]: No, but some day maybe who want?
- 31:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, kids.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 31:46[SPEAKER_01]: Are you in a relationship or now?
- 31:47[SPEAKER_00]: I am.
- 31:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 31:48[SPEAKER_00]: Um, you don't you haven't thought about a timeline?
- 31:51[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, not really now.
- 31:52[SPEAKER_00]: I'm kind of going off of.
- 31:56[SPEAKER_00]: The sense of like, okay, am I going to be safe?
- 31:59[SPEAKER_00]: If I have another person I'm taking care of, financially, do I have the time to spend for them?
- 32:03[SPEAKER_00]: Like all of that.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_00]: I'm breaking down.
- 32:05[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, okay, okay, let's just have a good kiss.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if these are less than these are just my musings.
- 32:12[SPEAKER_01]: These are just my thoughts of the last.
- 32:17[SPEAKER_01]: How things are like, think about this, right?
- 32:21[SPEAKER_01]: Our parents had nothing.
- 32:24[SPEAKER_01]: when they got married.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_01]: And nothing, and they had two or three kids, five kids or whatever.
- 32:30[SPEAKER_01]: That problem, right, amounts to feed, created their hustle, created their intentions to work hard, and they built, they built,
- 32:45[SPEAKER_01]: fortunes because they had kids and they had to like feed, right?
- 32:49[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 32:50[SPEAKER_01]: I think the natural order of the world sometimes is...
- 32:57[SPEAKER_01]: You don't have anything when you're young.
- 32:58[SPEAKER_01]: You have kids, and then it forces you to kind of think, I think we, in the modern era, have it backwards.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_01]: We're like, I need to get set up.
- 33:06[SPEAKER_01]: I need to get completely set up, and then I can find my girlfriend, and then I can find marriage.
- 33:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 33:13[SPEAKER_01]: I gotta have the map mentioned, I gotta have everything.
- 33:15[SPEAKER_01]: But what happens is, like,
- 33:17[SPEAKER_01]: I think we've blown past the natural order of things and we're just like waiting and waiting and pushing things out.
- 33:22[SPEAKER_01]: And then we are not really maximizing our opportunity because hardship is what really produces diamonds.
- 33:29[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 33:29[SPEAKER_00]: So do you know why that is?
- 33:31[SPEAKER_00]: Because this is my theory.
- 33:33[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's because the generation that came after the immigrant parents,
- 33:39[SPEAKER_00]: We have this consciousness and awareness that they went through so much just for us to be here.
- 33:47[SPEAKER_00]: And we're very aware of that.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_00]: We're very aware of the struggles, which is why we go, if we're going to do it, we're going to do it different.
- 33:55[SPEAKER_00]: We got to set everything up so that our kids don't have to, so they could, so that we could level up our kids, right?
- 34:04[SPEAKER_00]: Because I think
- 34:06[SPEAKER_00]: Like if I'm constantly struggling with finances and having the time for my kids and like one of my life issues are like relationship, whatever, all of that.
- 34:17[SPEAKER_00]: I'm dealing with that and taking care of a kid.
- 34:19[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, do I?
- 34:21[SPEAKER_00]: like, I don't have to go through what my parents went through.
- 34:24[SPEAKER_00]: That's the key.
- 34:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, yes, they did go through that.
- 34:27[SPEAKER_00]: Now I know what people are made of, but now how can we do it better and have it so that our kids have our full emotional attention.
- 34:35[SPEAKER_00]: Everything so that they learn from that.
- 34:38[SPEAKER_00]: I get it.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_01]: I get it.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_01]: But when they have everything sometimes, when we have everything sometimes, we don't maximize the hustle.
- 34:46[SPEAKER_01]: We don't maximize, I mean, they're,
- 34:49[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't be very controversial, I say, but kind of need a little bit of this like, exactly.
- 34:54[SPEAKER_00]: Pressure.
- 34:55[SPEAKER_00]: I know what you're saying.
- 34:56[SPEAKER_00]: So here's the thing though.
- 34:58[SPEAKER_00]: The world by default will always put pressure on everybody.
- 35:03[SPEAKER_00]: No matter what stage in life you're at.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_00]: It might not.
- 35:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 35:07[SPEAKER_00]: rich have problems.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_00]: It's never ending, right?
- 35:10[SPEAKER_00]: So when I realize that, that's like, okay, cool.
- 35:13[SPEAKER_00]: They're not going to have these problems.
- 35:15[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to have their own problems in their generation.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_00]: Whatever changes in the world that they live in, right?
- 35:20[SPEAKER_00]: Because we live in this world now where social media, all of those are our issues that we go through as everyday citizens, right?
- 35:27[SPEAKER_00]: And so there's mental health now that we got to worry about.
- 35:30[SPEAKER_00]: Like, our parents didn't have to deal with anything like that.
- 35:32[SPEAKER_00]: Because they weren't a
- 35:33[SPEAKER_00]: aware of it.
- 35:33[SPEAKER_00]: Now we're aware of it here.
- 35:35[SPEAKER_00]: So it changes through generation.
- 35:37[SPEAKER_00]: So I think like love story showed, they are going to have struggles.
- 35:40[SPEAKER_00]: Just a different way than we would imagine, right?
- 35:44[SPEAKER_01]: I am.
- 35:46[SPEAKER_01]: My kids are 9 and 7 and I don't feel like I struggled enough and I don't feel like they're struggling enough.
- 35:53[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 35:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I don't know.
- 35:55[SPEAKER_00]: That's kind of good though.
- 35:56[SPEAKER_00]: It's a good thing.
- 35:57[SPEAKER_00]: It's a good thing.
- 36:02[SPEAKER_01]: grapple with this idea, I talk a lot about this on the podcast.
- 36:08[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of the people that come as guests are successful.
- 36:12[SPEAKER_01]: And then when you dig a little bit deeper, they had a real tough turbulent coming to America or group poor in America.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_01]: And they made so much on themselves.
- 36:22[SPEAKER_01]: But then I'm not thinking about all the kids that made it in jail or got to jail and they're struggling with
- 36:31[SPEAKER_01]: So it's hard for me to like really weigh all that, but sometimes I think like when I look at my mom and her brothers and sisters to my dad side, you know, they got, they got real pressure to survive.
- 36:45[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, and they didn't even speak English.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_01]: I speak English.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_01]: We have it.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they had a way harder for some way harder, but they're all doing really, really, really well.
- 36:55[SPEAKER_01]: And then I look at like, people who are younger than me, who are going to be as who didn't have a tough, uh, they're not doing so well, right?
- 37:03[SPEAKER_00]: But like I said, I think,
- 37:06[SPEAKER_00]: the world will naturally add pressure and suffering to your life.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 37:11[SPEAKER_00]: Eventually, like you're never going to, nobody's ever going to live a life where they're like, I have it all, you know, they can, but then there's something else happens.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_00]: Like something's going to hit you eventually, like it will nature will correct itself in a way, right?
- 37:26[SPEAKER_00]: I do believe that, which is why, like for example,
- 37:29[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not struggling with having to go to a new country, having new language, working nine to five, like my parents did, right?
- 37:36[SPEAKER_00]: But the problem that I have now is, like, oh crap, they gave me everything, even if they hadn't nothing, but now I have to figure out, like once they're gone, what do I have to do now?
- 37:48[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I didn't learn how to be as resilient as them.
- 37:51[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't learn the hustle until later, in fact, so now I'm like,
- 37:56[SPEAKER_00]: I started to see that I'm like now I'm putting that's why I said earlier, I'm putting the pressure on myself like I have to do better no matter what because I see That once they're gone like I have nothing to fall back on.
- 38:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, right?
- 38:08[SPEAKER_00]: Because I currently stay at my parents house right now take care of them and they take care of me right?
- 38:14[SPEAKER_00]: But that's the thing like it's so expensive to buy a house right now, right, and especially if you're an artist like there's no it's really really hard right so that's why I had to start a business yeah do all this other stuff my mother lives with me.
- 38:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's such a big deal to American people right.
- 38:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but.
- 38:34[SPEAKER_01]: she's happy and I'm happier.
- 38:36[SPEAKER_00]: We are, and I don't regret moving back into my parents' place because this was like right during COVID.
- 38:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_00]: And I would not, like, I couldn't think of another place I'd rather be.
- 38:47[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I mean, you're spending time with your parents, plus my parents are really old.
- 38:51[SPEAKER_00]: So, you
- 38:52[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to be with them that much lower.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 38:54[SPEAKER_00]: Like, that's just the reality of it.
- 38:56[SPEAKER_00]: And I realized that I was like, do I really want to live on my old right now in struggle even more?
- 39:02[SPEAKER_00]: Or do I want to spend time with the people that I care about?
- 39:04[SPEAKER_00]: And they care about me the most and like out of everyone I know, right?
- 39:07[SPEAKER_01]: The way you should frame it is.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_01]: They live with you.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_01]: You don't live with them.
- 39:12[SPEAKER_00]: But also that support system allowed me to push myself further and start a business without having to worry about like am I going to be fed and all this other things, you know, totally.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_00]: So is your girlfriend living with you?
- 39:28[SPEAKER_00]: No, not yet.
- 39:29[SPEAKER_00]: That's the goal.
- 39:31[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully by the time this comes out, we'll be living together.
- 39:34[SPEAKER_00]: and how long have you guys been going out?
- 39:36[SPEAKER_00]: About two years, so long time, yeah.
- 39:38[SPEAKER_01]: I am really do think that.
- 39:43[SPEAKER_01]: the pressure of having children and having a wife and it's good for people, good for young people.
- 39:50[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I'm a big believer of that, right?
- 39:53[SPEAKER_01]: Because you went through it, I went through it, right?
- 39:55[SPEAKER_01]: But even before I went through it, I knew.
- 39:57[SPEAKER_01]: I knew like I wanna go through that.
- 39:59[SPEAKER_01]: It's tough, it's tough as hell.
- 40:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_01]: And sometimes the lessons that you learn while you're in it is not the lessons or wisdom that you're gonna pick up during the time, but it's like maybe sometimes five years after three years after, shit happens.
- 40:13[SPEAKER_00]: your children become your motivating force for pushing yourself.
- 40:18[SPEAKER_00]: That's a growth thing, right?
- 40:20[SPEAKER_00]: And so that's, you look at that in that lens.
- 40:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, it now, it doesn't have to be true.
- 40:25[SPEAKER_00]: It could be other things like, like, oh, let's set a goal, like get married by a house, whatever.
- 40:31[SPEAKER_00]: That could be also a driving force, right?
- 40:32[SPEAKER_00]: It could be
- 40:33[SPEAKER_00]: anything that you choose it to me, right?
- 40:35[SPEAKER_00]: Like we said earlier the inspiration, right?
- 40:39[SPEAKER_00]: If you find some of the inspires you that hard to motivate you, like I'm going to get up and start doing the thing now, like then that's totally fine too.
- 40:46[SPEAKER_00]: You just got to find it, you know?
- 40:48[SPEAKER_01]: And finding it is not.
- 40:50[SPEAKER_01]: God, that's not walking the parking.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:52[SPEAKER_00]: Finding it is, I know people where I've asked, I go, what do you want to do if you'd never had to make money anymore?
- 41:01[SPEAKER_00]: And some people just don't know.
- 41:03[SPEAKER_00]: And like, and that's okay.
- 41:05[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's just, what would you do?
- 41:08[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly what I'm doing right now.
- 41:09[SPEAKER_00]: Like I love talking to people.
- 41:11[SPEAKER_00]: I love learning.
- 41:12[SPEAKER_00]: I love Making content because I genuinely like I picked up a camera like ever since I was little right like I love making stuff and telling stories I'm already doing what I love yeah.
- 41:21[SPEAKER_00]: I love dancing and just creating so I don't need money for to do any of that but Obviously sometimes those things take money and so that's why it's like you gotta make it a thing so
- 41:32[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I thought about that question.
- 41:35[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe like more than five years ago.
- 41:38[SPEAKER_00]: And what would you do if you didn't have to make money?
- 41:40[SPEAKER_00]: Like, oh, I'm already doing it.
- 41:42[SPEAKER_00]: That's, it came to me like right away.
- 41:44[SPEAKER_01]: So everything I do is about that.
- 41:47[SPEAKER_00]: And you say, are you happy?
- 41:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know, are you happy?
- 41:51[SPEAKER_01]: You're totally happy with my life.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_01]: My life is, yeah, I'm like, I can't believe that I'm living this life some time.
- 41:59[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 42:00[SPEAKER_01]: And that's where the reward is for all your spiritual practice and gratitude practice.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_00]: I bet if you never did any of those like practices or like took a, took a second to even look at your life like that you probably wouldn't even feel the gratitude that you're feeling now right like you have to work your way to get there kind of you know, um
- 42:22[SPEAKER_01]: This morning I was talking to my brother about AI and he was like going off for me.
- 42:28[SPEAKER_01]: He was like, you know, for using it for work and he's like, you got to get more into it and then, you know, I'm making all these excuses and he just lays into me, right?
- 42:37[SPEAKER_01]: He just goes, ape shit on me.
- 42:40[SPEAKER_01]: And what's his take?
- 42:42[SPEAKER_01]: He's like, he goes, whatever I do, I'm a thousand times faster than you.
- 42:48[SPEAKER_01]: He's a thousand, because he has tools up to Yingyang, right?
- 42:51[SPEAKER_01]: He knows how to prompt, and he's just been at it for five years now, wow.
- 42:56[SPEAKER_01]: So he is teaching the set like college level to his students at school in Vietnam, and he's always pushing me for the last three years.
- 43:06[SPEAKER_01]: It's at a point where you just talk to it, and it does its thing, and I make up excuses and stuff like that, and one thing that really
- 43:15[SPEAKER_01]: took him for a ride, he just went off.
- 43:16[SPEAKER_01]: He was like, well maybe like in a few more weeks, I was just flying to Vietnam and have you teach me and he just let me have it and it hurts so much can to hear him go off like that.
- 43:27[SPEAKER_01]: And then I had to really gather myself.
- 43:30[SPEAKER_01]: And I was at the gym, I was like, I'm about to go inside the gym, I was like five in the morning, I was about to go into the gym, and I had to gather myself and go, why am I so hurt?
- 43:40[SPEAKER_01]: Why am I so torn about what he said?
- 43:43[SPEAKER_01]: And then I thought to myself, like, the gift of having a brother who cares so passionately about my well-being is a gift.
- 43:53[SPEAKER_01]: And that pressure is the pressure that
- 43:57[SPEAKER_01]: I went into the gym for 30 minutes when I knew, normally go for about an hour and a half.
- 44:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_01]: I went for 30 minutes.
- 44:02[SPEAKER_01]: I went back out, got back on an assignment at work.
- 44:04[SPEAKER_01]: And I used AI for this.
- 44:07[SPEAKER_01]: And instead of taking five days, it took me two hours.
- 44:11[SPEAKER_00]: See?
- 44:12[SPEAKER_00]: Dude.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_00]: But, okay.
- 44:15[SPEAKER_00]: I think with AI, this is my take on it.
- 44:19[SPEAKER_00]: Like, it's a great tool.
- 44:21[SPEAKER_00]: No doubt about it, right?
- 44:23[SPEAKER_00]: It comes with,
- 44:25[SPEAKER_00]: a cost of the environment and all of these things right but same thing with the industrial agent all these things like no matter what innovation and tech and the way to move forward it costs something there's always a trade off right it's just how much of that are we willing to trade for the world to end.
- 44:44[SPEAKER_00]: You don't even because we're fast tracking it with AI now, but the world, but we're not there yet Thankfully and people are aware of it and they're fighting back and so there's gonna be like any time Like something changes in the world.
- 44:59[SPEAKER_00]: There's gonna be a pushback, right?
- 45:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and so it's that's the world's way of correcting itself so that we don't self-destruct right so that's
- 45:07[SPEAKER_00]: That's kind of how I feel like that on a big picture scale, but on a small picture scale, I think if you're a creative that is really trying to make a living, like a little AI won't hurt.
- 45:20[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think, but you gotta use it in a way where like you're not making it do everything for you and it's not you anymore.
- 45:28[SPEAKER_01]: Honestly, I don't even think you should use AI to do art.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_01]: I think it should be a lead or idea generator.
- 45:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 45:39[SPEAKER_01]: It should not be doing your art.
- 45:40[SPEAKER_01]: Like, for example, if I want to...
- 45:43[SPEAKER_01]: write a song I might type in some lyrics and I might type in a core progression and say hey can you pump out a demo and then I use that demo to really work from there and then like put the demo way and then just really work on it and analog.
- 46:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah because art is a process.
- 46:01[SPEAKER_00]: So this is how I genuinely view it in terms of a creative process is
- 46:06[SPEAKER_00]: as a painter, like oil painting, for example.
- 46:10[SPEAKER_00]: All right, my process is I go to the store.
- 46:13[SPEAKER_00]: I buy the oil and the brushes and whatever, my materials, I go home and I start just drawing and painting, right?
- 46:20[SPEAKER_00]: I don't go, all right, what pigment do I have to mix this oil with?
- 46:25[SPEAKER_00]: Do I have to go freaking get some furs and put together my brush?
- 46:31[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I don't do those steps.
- 46:33[SPEAKER_00]: Like, there's already tools that were pre-made for me.
- 46:36[SPEAKER_00]: That's what AI is in terms of like, it's just another part of the process.
- 46:40[SPEAKER_00]: That speed things up, right?
- 46:42[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you don't, like, it just depends on how much time do you want to spend.
- 46:46[SPEAKER_00]: For me, I find it.
- 46:48[SPEAKER_00]: like there's you got to find like a balance for yourself.
- 46:50[SPEAKER_00]: We're like I still want to make it but there's certain things that I don't want to do and certain things I do want to do and that's my process.
- 46:56[SPEAKER_00]: Right?
- 46:56[SPEAKER_00]: For example, if I want to make a thumbnail, we're talking about YouTube, right?
- 46:59[SPEAKER_00]: If I want to make a thumbnail, I don't go, hey, hey, I make the thumbnail for me because it's like why, right?
- 47:06[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, I don't prefer that methods.
- 47:08[SPEAKER_00]: Some people do the way I do it is like, let me get the idea first, get the pictures that I want for the thumbnail, get the text that I make up the actual thumbnail, and I throw it into AI go.
- 47:19[SPEAKER_00]: All right, make it better.
- 47:21[SPEAKER_00]: Make it look more clear, make it look more thumbnail friendly, change the lighting, do all that, because those are the little things that I feel like I don't need to do.
- 47:29[SPEAKER_00]: But that's just me though.
- 47:30[SPEAKER_00]: Some people like coloring their thumbnail.
- 47:32[SPEAKER_00]: Some people like sharpening their, or whatever.
- 47:35[SPEAKER_00]: But I use it to try to slightly enhance my art.
- 47:38[SPEAKER_00]: I don't use it to make my art, right?
- 47:40[SPEAKER_00]: And the same thing for, for let's say I'm making a clip, right?
- 47:44[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not gonna sit there and type out every single word for my captions.
- 47:48[SPEAKER_00]: There's already a i can do it auto transcribed thing.
- 47:51[SPEAKER_00]: It's not perfect, but it helps me do a step that I'm not I'm not down to like sit there and do you know what I mean so but I'm still I'm still the one cutting the clip.
- 48:02[SPEAKER_00]: I'm still the one editing everything right because I've tried to use.
- 48:06[SPEAKER_00]: like I had a client that asked me to use opus clips, which is an AI clip generator, right?
- 48:11[SPEAKER_00]: You just upload the video and it makes the clips for you.
- 48:14[SPEAKER_00]: Wow, sounds like a great idea, right?
- 48:16[SPEAKER_00]: But in reality, it sucks.
- 48:18[SPEAKER_00]: Like it's so jank.
- 48:19[SPEAKER_00]: It cuts it out the weird, the weirdest places.
- 48:22[SPEAKER_00]: And it doesn't know what I want, really, right?
- 48:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 48:26[SPEAKER_00]: So I feel like
- 48:28[SPEAKER_00]: Because we're in the beginning stages, like there's still so many things that I can not do, but the things that I can do, I try to minimize my use of it, but it's because I mainly want to still have control over my creative process.
- 48:43[SPEAKER_00]: And I enjoy it.
- 48:44[SPEAKER_00]: I genuinely enjoy finding pictures and things and putting it together.
- 48:48[SPEAKER_00]: I like that process, right?
- 48:50[SPEAKER_00]: Because that's what fulfills me for people that want AI to do everything for them.
- 48:55[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, if that fulfills you great, but it's to me, there's way more fun ways to create, right?
- 49:02[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, that's my take on it.
- 49:06[SPEAKER_00]: Where we at?
- 49:08[SPEAKER_00]: Just want to see what we're at.
- 49:12[SPEAKER_01]: We're at 50 minutes.
- 49:13[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to wrap it up here.
- 49:14[SPEAKER_01]: Let's do it.
- 49:15[SPEAKER_01]: Let's do it.
- 49:15[SPEAKER_00]: Let's do it.
- 49:15[SPEAKER_01]: This is fun.
- 49:17[SPEAKER_00]: This was good.
- 49:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I like this.
- 49:18[SPEAKER_00]: Awesome.
- 49:19[SPEAKER_00]: I like this.
- 49:20[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 49:20[SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk about this.
- 49:22[SPEAKER_00]: I like that.
- 49:23[SPEAKER_00]: You started doing in-person interviews and with cameras and stuff because I remember our first time we did this was Do Zoom, right?
- 49:31[SPEAKER_00]: Some like that.
- 49:31[SPEAKER_00]: Riverside FM.
- 49:32[SPEAKER_00]: What made you want to push it to this level of production?
- 49:35[SPEAKER_01]: I always knew.
- 49:36[SPEAKER_01]: I always, people always said, you have to do in-person, you know?
- 49:40[SPEAKER_01]: And it was a little bit weird at the in the beginning.
- 49:43[SPEAKER_01]: He's like a little bit weird, but, you know, I've done a lot of it in the last two years, but I still have to do some virtual.
- 49:50[SPEAKER_01]: I got people in Poland, I got people in Vietnam, East Coast.
- 49:54[SPEAKER_01]: I can't do this entirely, you know, all in person.
- 49:56[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not Rogan where everybody's gonna fly in Austin to shoot, you know, with Rogan.
- 50:01[SPEAKER_00]: Right, right.
- 50:03[SPEAKER_00]: But you are at O.C.
- 50:04[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of things here.
- 50:05[SPEAKER_01]: That's why right here, right around here.
- 50:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, lots of
- 50:13[SPEAKER_01]: I'm finding that it's a big place, but it's also a very small place in what way.
- 50:22[SPEAKER_01]: We all know each other, right?
- 50:24[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we all know each other and I want to stretch more.
- 50:29[SPEAKER_01]: I want, you know, I might,
- 50:32[SPEAKER_01]: I, you know, it was a time where I did a lot of academic interviews and those really got traction.
- 50:38[SPEAKER_01]: But I felt like I was like not paying attention to the regular community, the regular like artist's community, and I'm like, that doesn't do the big numbers, but at the same time, it scratches and itch because our community is ever evolving.
- 50:53[SPEAKER_01]: And if I don't talk to the artists of the community, how do I know what we're going?
- 50:58[SPEAKER_00]: Right, right, I'm glad you have me here then because yeah, I'm always happy to share my journey to because I sometimes feel like without having an outlet to share these types of things like you're not going to be able to I feel like grow as much because growing in terms of like having the conversation with someone and learning about
- 51:22[SPEAKER_00]: You know, what's the circle been up to like what's our community been up to like that's super important But that's kind of why I started my show because I wanted to interview every artist in OCLA Whatever and put them out there, you know, and are you just doing good?
- 51:39[SPEAKER_00]: I mean these are you doing and anyone anyone anyone anyone anyone anyone.
- 51:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 51:43[SPEAKER_00]: No, doesn't doesn't matter because like it's just art related It's just art
- 51:49[SPEAKER_00]: But people that want to use art to like this is my living like I want to have a business with my art or it doesn't have to be even be art just anything creative right it doesn't have to be because food can be creative you know anything can be creative business can be creative right so I want to get into those conversations for the people that are
- 52:18[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, do in closing, do you have any questions for me?
- 52:24[SPEAKER_00]: What are your goals for this podcast in the next five years?
- 52:33[SPEAKER_01]: I don't have goals.
- 52:36[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not lying.
- 52:37[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not okay.
- 52:38[SPEAKER_01]: I people ask me that from day one.
- 52:40[SPEAKER_01]: I don't have goals.
- 52:42[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I do maybe 100 a year, but that's always in my goal.
- 52:46[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I just tried to hit 100 New Year.
- 52:48[SPEAKER_01]: Some years I fall flat, some years on my head.
- 52:50[SPEAKER_01]: But 100 episodes?
- 52:51[SPEAKER_00]: 100 episodes a year.
- 52:52[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
- 52:53[SPEAKER_00]: That's like two a week to a week.
- 52:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, wow.
- 52:57[SPEAKER_00]: That's pretty good.
- 52:58[SPEAKER_01]: Last year, I only recorded 60, 40, went by the way, so I could say two movies I was producing.
- 53:04[SPEAKER_01]: But even in between those two movies I produced, I was able to hit 60.
- 53:10[SPEAKER_01]: I'm this year I made up for it.
- 53:11[SPEAKER_01]: I'm trying to make up.
- 53:13[SPEAKER_01]: I'm trying to get to 140 this year.
- 53:15[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
- 53:16[SPEAKER_00]: Why?
- 53:16[SPEAKER_00]: Why?
- 53:17[SPEAKER_00]: The quantity.
- 53:19[SPEAKER_00]: Like why?
- 53:20[SPEAKER_00]: Why changed the number of?
- 53:21[SPEAKER_01]: Because if you don't have a goal.
- 53:24[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you asked me what my goal is.
- 53:25[SPEAKER_01]: If I don't have that, then why am I even?
- 53:28[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's just a standard.
- 53:30[SPEAKER_01]: Number 100 a year is not that much.
- 53:33[SPEAKER_01]: It's really not that much.
- 53:34[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 53:34[SPEAKER_01]: To a week.
- 53:35[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 53:36[SPEAKER_01]: So I do hours a week.
- 53:37[SPEAKER_01]: That's true, right?
- 53:38[SPEAKER_01]: That's true.
- 53:39[SPEAKER_01]: It's not.
- 53:39[SPEAKER_01]: It's really nothing.
- 53:41[SPEAKER_01]: I'm only running out of my own million miles an hour this year because I have to make up for last year.
- 53:45[SPEAKER_01]: But next year.
- 53:47[SPEAKER_01]: to a week.
- 53:48[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 53:49[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I think it go.
- 53:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 53:50[SPEAKER_00]: It took him.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 53:52[SPEAKER_01]: I don't sort of have any real.
- 53:54[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 53:54[SPEAKER_01]: Goals.
- 53:55[SPEAKER_00]: There's no goals.
- 53:55[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, like, no milestones.
- 53:57[SPEAKER_01]: No, that's like saying, do I have a goal when I work out?
- 53:59[SPEAKER_01]: I just want to stay in shape.
- 54:01[SPEAKER_01]: Two, two podcasts a week keeps me in shape.
- 54:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 54:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 54:05[SPEAKER_01]: My goal in shape.
- 54:06[SPEAKER_01]: We're starting to get in shape.
- 54:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 54:08[SPEAKER_00]: Same podcast.
- 54:08[SPEAKER_00]: What about you?
- 54:09[SPEAKER_00]: That's good.
- 54:11[SPEAKER_00]: My podcast goals.
- 54:13[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like I already achieved the one a week goal, which I'm still doing.
- 54:19[SPEAKER_00]: Super, super manageable, really easy.
- 54:22[SPEAKER_00]: The goal for the second season, which it comes out late November, right?
- 54:29[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully this comes out by then, but second season, the goal is to grow the subscribers of the YouTube channel specifically.
- 54:37[SPEAKER_00]: I like to get really detailed with my goals and be very specific.
- 54:41[SPEAKER_00]: So I want to grow my subscribers to hopefully 10,000.
- 54:47[SPEAKER_00]: It's just a number.
- 54:48[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't matter, it doesn't matter like how I get there as long as you get there.
- 54:53[SPEAKER_00]: It's just, I just throughout the number because I feel like this is a realistic goal, right?
- 54:59[SPEAKER_00]: Because I feel like also it's an, I also want to average a certain amount of views which I also think is a realistic goal because going back to why I did this in the first place, it's like if I'm trying to,
- 55:12[SPEAKER_00]: platform people if I'm trying to get people to be seen like it's got to have some viewership and like some level of a viewership where it's worth it for them to be on and worth it to help them grow like if I'm only here like in hundreds of views per episode it's like what's the point I'm not able to put people on a spotlight and I'm not able to push people right so and I'm not how my helping my community if I only get this many subs and views right since.
- 55:38[SPEAKER_00]: So yes, it, like again, it goes back to, yeah, I do want to grow my own stuff, but really the more I grow the more they grow.
- 55:45[SPEAKER_00]: So it's like, that's why I have this first initial goal for the second season.
- 55:50[SPEAKER_00]: And I also have a strategy on how I'm doing that.
- 55:53[SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
- 55:53[SPEAKER_00]: So what I learned from posting one a week and five reels a day, oh, I'm sorry.
- 56:00[SPEAKER_00]: What a week.
- 56:00[SPEAKER_01]: What a day.
- 56:01[SPEAKER_00]: Right, what a day.
- 56:02[SPEAKER_00]: I learned that even if a real goes viral, it doesn't translate into views for YouTube, right?
- 56:09[SPEAKER_00]: So how do we do that?
- 56:10[SPEAKER_00]: How do we get more views on YouTube?
- 56:12[SPEAKER_00]: One strategy that I'm working on right now is get more YouTubers to be on.
- 56:16[SPEAKER_00]: Like other big YouTubers that already have a YouTube following, because a YouTube is its own community, yep, yep, right?
- 56:23[SPEAKER_00]: So let's just talk to more people that have a YouTube,
- 56:26[SPEAKER_00]: And let's try to like get some viewers over and make sure that's it.
- 56:31[SPEAKER_00]: That's the strategy.
- 56:31[SPEAKER_00]: Super simple.
- 56:32[SPEAKER_00]: Super simple.
- 56:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 56:35[SPEAKER_00]: And these are really simple.
- 56:36[SPEAKER_00]: Super simple.
- 56:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but that's why I try to set realistic goals that I know I can achieve.
- 56:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 56:42[SPEAKER_00]: So that's it.
- 56:44[SPEAKER_01]: For me, it's a hundred episodes a year.
- 56:47[SPEAKER_01]: But then there's also this other thing which is
- 56:50[SPEAKER_01]: And I talk into people that, um, that I don't know much about their world, I like that, you know, that's a big one for me.
- 56:59[SPEAKER_00]: Jump against an unknown.
- 57:00[SPEAKER_01]: Unknown, like I, I want to know more about the unknown, you know, in the Vietnamese community.
- 57:04[SPEAKER_01]: Like recently, I interviewed Dominatrix from her name is Thia, okay.
- 57:11[SPEAKER_01]: Either from, no, she's from Czech Republic.
- 57:15[SPEAKER_01]: What a beautiful interview.
- 57:17[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't know anything about that world.
- 57:18[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't even know Vietnamese woman in Czech Republic was doing that, but I live now with the hopes of meeting more and more and more people like that.
- 57:29[SPEAKER_01]: All over the world, Vietnamese people.
- 57:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 57:32[SPEAKER_01]: Because then her story is directly related to her dad or that's Vietnamese, right?
- 57:37[SPEAKER_01]: It's just interesting.
- 57:39[SPEAKER_01]: That's it, I like that.
- 57:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 57:41[SPEAKER_01]: Whenever you need introduction to anybody, please let me know.
- 57:50[SPEAKER_00]: Did.
- 57:50[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you.
- 57:51[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for having me.
- 57:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, thank you for being here.
- 57:54[SPEAKER_00]: Same here.
- 57:54[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you for coming on.
