Transcript
- 0:18Hi, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon on a
- 0:22Tuesday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network, Iowa based programming
- 0:27coming at you for the next 6 hours.
- 0:29Trent Condon, myself, Ken Miller will start it and take it until
- 0:322 and then off the bench come Sean and Lucas two to five.
- 0:35Overtime Iowa, the final hour of the broadcast day.
- 0:39Here's what's coming up on our program.
- 0:41We will talk baseball at 12:30. Our regular weekly guest, Matt
- 0:45Snyder from CBSSports.com. He covers Major League Baseball.
- 0:49We will do that at 12:30, shift him out of his 1:00 spot because
- 0:53we're going to grab Elliott Clef from 24/7 Sports
- 0:56hawkeyeinsider.com. We'll get Elliott prior to going
- 1:00in to listen to Kirk Ference and after listening to some of the
- 1:03players as they talk side Hawk and are in the midst of doing so
- 1:07as we speak. So Elliott Clef coming up here
- 1:09at 1:00. And then Bill Bender on college
- 1:12football. He writes for The Sporting News.
- 1:15He will join us coming up here at 1:30.
- 1:17We'll take a look back. We'll look ahead where Bill
- 1:20thoughts are after the first full week of college football,
- 1:24where if you would have bet the underdogs blindly.
- 1:28Did you see this? Dogs are under rather under on
- 1:32every Division 1 college football game. 8080 up and 46
- 1:37down 63.5%. I'm an underdog player.
- 1:41I got walloped in week 1. Well, that's just unders unders.
- 1:44Oh, unders unders. You gotcha in the.
- 1:47Misheard you there. Yeah, well, I guess we should,
- 1:49you know, put a bow on what the the weekend it was last night.
- 1:53So what's what's what's more realistic?
- 1:56North Carolina's really bad. TCU's really good little both.
- 1:59Where are you at? I would go, North Carolina's
- 2:02really bad. I mean, I think that's where the
- 2:04conversation has to start. And embarrassing Trent.
- 2:07Yeah, I completely out of it. Saw the tweet when it was 41
- 2:12six, Which one? It was 41, six at the time, and
- 2:16it said Bill Belichick was 41 when his girlfriend was 6.
- 2:19No. Is that?
- 2:20True. I don't know if it's true or
- 2:21not, but it really made me chuckle.
- 2:23At the very least, it was awful. Mm hmm.
- 2:27And very quickly, you know, people thought what why, why
- 2:32does Bill Belichick need to do this?
- 2:33Why does he do it? This is tainting his legacy.
- 2:36I agree. If this goes the direction that
- 2:38it certainly looks, game number one, it's going, this is going
- 2:41to taint it. And all the back and forth and
- 2:42all the words that we wasted and the ink that was spilled about
- 2:46is a Brady or is it Belichick? Brady went to Tampa and won a
- 2:49Super Bowl. Now we're seeing this.
- 2:52It was Tom Brady. And I think that can be right
- 2:55now a pretty definitive statement that you can make.
- 2:58I couldn't agree with him or look, college checks a really
- 3:00good coach, but you have to have a quarterback, whatever level
- 3:02you're at. And this yesterday it I I kind
- 3:06of found myself at least in some feeling bad for the man.
- 3:10I didn't not not like I'm not, you know, not going to cry or
- 3:14anything like that, but I thought, Oh my God, what are you
- 3:16doing? Why did you do this?
- 3:18He didn't need to do this. It didn't make sense at the
- 3:21time, although I thought it was going to work just because of
- 3:24his name. But I mean, when do you think
- 3:29Jordan left? How long was Lawrence Taylor
- 3:31there? You know, they showed them
- 3:33before the game. After the first touchdown.
- 3:35You see what Coward tweeted? No, after the first touchdown.
- 3:38All right, it's over. I've, I'm, I can go on.
- 3:41I'm paraphrasing, but Bill Belichick is the second greatest
- 3:45college football coach behind Nick Saban.
- 3:48This was right after they scored and when they did as easy as
- 3:51they went down the field and they holy.
- 3:53Crap, Bamboo was chirping. Yes, he.
- 3:56Was he was chirping, but everybody was holy mackerel.
- 3:59Maybe, maybe this guy can, you know, walk on water and take his
- 4:04team with them. But very quickly after that,
- 4:07see, I thought you would say TCU give credit to them.
- 4:09You've been hyping Hoover up all offseason, Trent.
- 4:13I can see why this guy's really good.
- 4:16I mean, in the quarterbacks that the Big 12 has and they've got a
- 4:19bunch of them, he's on the list. Where do who are the top three
- 4:22teams after we seen let's overreact, OK, let's do it.
- 4:26Who are the top three teams in the Big 12?
- 4:28Utah yes. Huge gap no.
- 4:32Iowa State. Yes.
- 4:34And then it gets tricky. Not for me it doesn't.
- 4:37It's TCU for you. It's.
- 4:38TCU for me. Yeah, that's not a crazy.
- 4:40TCU gets Iowa State, Utah does not get either of them.
- 4:45So the betting market right now, this is updated from DraftKings,
- 4:49I'm looking. At So this is the Big 12
- 4:50conference. This is to win the Big 12.
- 4:52Utah's favored. Utah is favored, yeah.
- 4:54Utah's favored. Plus 4:50 you can still get on
- 4:58the let's. See some price.
- 5:00TC was so recent. TC is second choice.
- 5:04They're not. I've stayed this.
- 5:06They're not. Who is Texas Tech now?
- 5:09They were not tested. Nobody.
- 5:11Right. But they were also came in as
- 5:13one of the top three teams and odds aren't going to shift that
- 5:16much, you wouldn't think. And they didn't do anything to
- 5:19discredit. No, no, the only thing that the
- 5:21only bad thing that they had was a weather.
- 5:22Delay in their case, yes. So they are the second choice.
- 5:26Then tied for the third betting choice are the Cyclones with
- 5:29Arizona State. And TCU was what?
- 5:32Plus 850. Tantalizing.
- 5:34You like those horn this? Defense, Trent, they, they were
- 5:37all over North Carolina. Hoover's Hoover.
- 5:41They can run well, I guess. I think they can.
- 5:46You got to take, I guess you have to take into consideration.
- 5:48It's almost like they played in an FCS team.
- 5:53They Trent, they were awful. 70 new players and it worked for
- 5:56Dion. It did.
- 5:58It didn't work in game number one for Belichick.
- 6:00The rest of the league, Baylor 12:50.
- 6:03You can get K State now at 19 to one.
- 6:06A big drop down there. Here's another angle to look at
- 6:09though, to make the conference championship.
- 6:11I like this bet better. Now your betting favorite.
- 6:14This one is not Utah. It's not.
- 6:16It's the Iowa State Cyclones because they're one and O, they
- 6:20got the one and O start and they're plus 230.
- 6:24They're the betting favorite just to get to the game.
- 6:26Texas Tech, the second choice, plus 250.
- 6:28There's Utah plus 260 along with Arizona State, TCU just to get
- 6:33there plus 380. So this market thinks there's
- 6:36going to be two teams potentially from the Big 12.
- 6:38No, this is to make the conference championship game.
- 6:41Oh, the I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I thought you were talking about
- 6:43make the playoffs. No Make the conference
- 6:45championship. There you go, That that makes
- 6:47sense then. Well, we'll see.
- 6:49But man, oh man, I I found myself trying to find something
- 6:52else to watch and the baseball was over.
- 6:56It was not. Taken pretty terrible just got
- 6:58awful anyways, the hype leading up to it, it was all North
- 7:02Carolina and North and I get is Bill Belichick, but Sunny thanks
- 7:05said after the game. Yeah, they were disrespected and
- 7:07they used it. They used it two teams on the
- 7:10field. We'll see where it goes.
- 7:13By the way, Matt Campbell is already been named as a
- 7:17potential replacement at the University of Alabama.
- 7:21Oh wow. There's a a sports betting.
- 7:24I think it's it's offshore. It's that's dot AG.
- 7:27So that's offshore. Campbell's not the favorite by
- 7:29any means, but he's on the list about in the Middle East, 18 to
- 7:32one, just behind Jon Gruden at 14 to 1.
- 7:35And I don't know, Dion's on there and Dillingham and Kiffin
- 7:40and Tommy Reese's the favorite of three to one.
- 7:42But anyways, Matt Campbell's made his first.
- 7:46So what do they do over at WHOTV?
- 7:48Something they watch the crap or something, something like that.
- 7:53I don't know what it is. Anyways, good stuff.
- 7:55Well, on we go to to Cyhawk. We'll be listening to coaches
- 8:00today, Matt Campbell and I'm, I'm guessing Haycock spoke last
- 8:05week. So probably Mauser today would
- 8:07be my guess, but I don't know. And I think it's ongoing as we
- 8:10speak. We'll get that and we'll get the
- 8:12latest from the University of Iowa.
- 8:14Any, any takeaways from when we got off the air 2:00 yesterday
- 8:19to where we're at today when it comes to that?
- 8:21You know, there was no surprise. We saw and we mentioned that no
- 8:26Kamari Bolton on the depth chart.
- 8:27Bryce George, how about that? Yeah, that happened before the
- 8:30game, right? It happened during warmups.
- 8:32He got in your end zone or in the other end.
- 8:35Zone, I don't know where it was, but he just got injured during
- 8:37war. Because they showed a picture of
- 8:38him on his mic, moving away from microphone that's not good, on
- 8:42his back and being attended to. We know Reese Vanderzee, he
- 8:46wasn't on the depth chart. We know that that's going to be
- 8:48a while. What we get a depth chart this
- 8:51week? Because it was a surprise last
- 8:53week that we got one from Iowa State.
- 8:55From Iowa State. Well, it's not worth the paper
- 8:57we've written on, right? He's just going to fib.
- 8:59Right. I mean, are we going to see Burr
- 9:01on there and not probably, yeah. If it is, you can't read
- 9:04anything into it and there won't be anything there.
- 9:06You. Can't listen to a word he says.
- 9:08When it comes to injuries, yeah, no, you can't.
- 9:10No, there. It's not truthful.
- 9:12And that's his prerogative. So be it.
- 9:15Not good for us, but that's the way that he runs his program and
- 9:17it's been incredibly successful. So after a day to marinate.
- 9:21There's Ben and Belcherk. Depthcher just had me the
- 9:26positions listed, no players when we come in, open up the
- 9:32microphone at noon yesterday and we go through.
- 9:35Now here we are, 24 hours later. I do have a Hawker wife that I
- 9:39forgot to mention. Yesterday.
- 9:40OK, go ahead. Large.
- 9:42Yeah. Played a little bit more.
- 9:43He's played a little bit more. He's.
- 9:46A big dude. He is.
- 9:47He was full back and also does a little bit there in the passing
- 9:51game. Yeah, he's going to be.
- 9:53He's going to be a part of it. He is.
- 9:54Yeah, he is. But is there anything that's
- 9:57changed for you that you look back at Kornowski?
- 9:59So I went back and watched it again last night.
- 10:02And is he any better than you thought he was?
- 10:04Watching it in person, watching Sunday night, Watched it again
- 10:06last night. No, because so I kept reading,
- 10:12you know, he was six of his last sizes.
- 10:13So this is the reason. For how many?
- 10:15Yards were and that's what it was.
- 10:17Here were those passes. Yeah, because everybody's
- 10:20bragging up his final seven pass.
- 10:22Yeah, but he finished strong. Six for seven aren't Lay it on.
- 10:24Me. So his first pass went 5 yards
- 10:26downfield, 2 yards downfield. That was the touchdown to
- 10:29Weichen, which is a better throw than I initially thought.
- 10:31Was it? Yes, watching that again, that
- 10:34was a good throw incompletion. He did throw down the field a
- 10:37lot of yards. Pass caught in the backfield 3
- 10:40yard gain the other pass caught in the backfield 2 yard gate.
- 10:43He's on a roll. A pass 4 yards downfield and
- 10:45then the last one, the 10 yard pass to Gill.
- 10:48And that one was even. It was the pass to the bunch, I
- 10:52guess, but it wasn't perfect by any means.
- 10:54No, and this is what we're going to hang our hat on.
- 10:56This is going to be. How we finish strong, yes, he'll
- 10:59build on this. He'll build on this.
- 11:00I kept reading it on the message for us.
- 11:02I mean, the, the communist journalism here is that this is
- 11:05what it is. No, that's not.
- 11:08Again, go back and watch it. It wasn't just when he settled
- 11:11in. There were opportunities.
- 11:13He didn't take shots. And if this is a guy and this
- 11:16was something that Kirk mentioned after the game that
- 11:19maybe he was a little bit too hyped up and we've heard this
- 11:21excuse coming in continually. If that's the case, if you are
- 11:25that hyped up to play Albany against Albany, what's going to
- 11:29happen Saturday at 1110? What's going to happen in Jack
- 11:33Trice with 60,000? That is as confident of a bunch
- 11:37as you are going to find. It's not going to go.
- 11:40Well, and yet the what? What are the betting splits?
- 11:42Have you seen those? That's a good. 1.
- 11:46Because the point spread hasn't moved has.
- 11:48It no, no it hasn't. It's three, or at least it was
- 11:513. Is it up to three, 3 1/2?
- 11:54I expected it to move, not significantly, but at least move
- 11:57in Iowa State's direction. Your updated splits, this is
- 12:01from Wager Talk is yeah, it's three painted across the board.
- 12:04Across the board. 60% of the tickets are on the Cyclones and
- 12:0988% of the money is on Iowa State.
- 12:13So. You're getting everything you're
- 12:16getting, you're getting both sides.
- 12:17Everything is coming that direction now.
- 12:19The total is plummeted after the opener of 44 1/2 down to 43.
- 12:23Now sits at 41 at Circa. So you know that that is going
- 12:27to be an angle a lot of people are looking at.
- 12:29I guess Iowa can't score, right? Can Iowa stop Rocco back?
- 12:34I mean, that's the second question that I go to.
- 12:36Trent, I wasn't sold on the secondary.
- 12:38They didn't play much. I think that's how Iowa State
- 12:42will beat them is through the. Air, I don't think that Iowa
- 12:44State's going to be successful. Running it.
- 12:46I don't. You know what I'm not.
- 12:47I'm not sold on the running game.
- 12:49You know who I think they're running.
- 12:52Game success this season is predicated on Abu Sama.
- 12:57I think it's him. Carson Hansen's going to try and
- 13:00run three. I love his game.
- 13:01He's a tough, nasty SOB, but Sama's a difference maker with
- 13:05that speed of his. I think Abu Sama, if Iowa
- 13:09State's going to be known as a team who has an adequate running
- 13:11game, it has to be him. If we went position by position,
- 13:17how many advantages does Iowa State?
- 13:19Have well you mean or or position group like offensive
- 13:22line, defensive? Yeah.
- 13:23So we started quarterback huge, huge, huge advantage running
- 13:27back slightly in Iowa, but without Moulton, it's hard to
- 13:32say that yet. It was against Albany and.
- 13:34I would agree with you if Moulton was there I'd I'd slight
- 13:37slighted. But maybe slight edge.
- 13:38Iowa State, Hanson and some have proven it.
- 13:42Yeah, at the collegiate level, OK, but it's a coin flip.
- 13:45Coin flip. I think you're arguing
- 13:46semantics, wide receiver. Wide receiver.
- 13:51Iowa State. Because the Townsend, what you
- 13:53saw. Townsend Esselton Overby had a
- 13:56touchdown against a. He did first game A.
- 13:58Big 12 opponent. Yep, first touchdown of the.
- 14:01Year and history, because we're still in the stages for Iowa.
- 14:05We think that they're deeper, but they're also without
- 14:07Vanderzee. There's another demerit against
- 14:09the Hawkeyes. And then without a quarterback
- 14:11who wants to throw the ball down the field?
- 14:12At minimum, slight edge Iowa State.
- 14:15Let's go to tight end. It's Iowa State.
- 14:17It's Iowa State, and it's not close.
- 14:18It's not. It's not.
- 14:19How many times have we said that?
- 14:20The last two. Days, right?
- 14:22This was the day Mark the tape. And it is.
- 14:26It is. And if that's just what number?
- 14:28No, there's got other guys. Yes.
- 14:30Is that number 2-3 and four? Also, I think you point to Iowa
- 14:34State offensive line advantage, Iowa.
- 14:36Yeah, it is. I'm with you.
- 14:38Yeah, I'm with you. Advantage Iowa.
- 14:40So we just went through the four positions on the offense. 3 Iowa
- 14:44State, one for the Hawkeyes. Defensively now Dom Orange is a
- 14:49number one at the top of the. He's in a different class.
- 14:51But when you're talking about as a whole group, it's Iowa.
- 14:54It's Iowa. Yep.
- 14:56Linebackers. It's Iowa State.
- 14:57And it's not close. It's not close.
- 14:58It's not close at all. Secondary, It's Iowa State.
- 15:01It's Iowa State. Kicker.
- 15:04It's Drew Stevens, but you know what, Conradi I mean with that
- 15:0863 yarder. Trend.
- 15:10It's not. It's closer than you maybe think
- 15:12it is, because Drew Stevens is tremendous.
- 15:14And if you would ask me this after week 1 of what I said,
- 15:17come on. And we're giving the advantage
- 15:18to the opposite of the guy that hit the game winner 50 plus last
- 15:22year. Yeah, so.
- 15:25It's not. Maybe by an inch, Yes.
- 15:27Advantage, but not a big one. No butter, Iowa.
- 15:30Iowa. Return game.
- 15:33It's Iowa. It's Iowa.
- 15:35But maybe again, it's not as big as you think.
- 15:38Yeah, but region's region is. He's so good he won Returner of
- 15:41the Year of the country. Last night he's so.
- 15:43Good give advantage there. Yeah, but how many times have we
- 15:46gone position by position stacking it up?
- 15:49And it's usually a lot of at least Iowa leans.
- 15:52That's not the case. This year we leaned running
- 15:55back. We gave them both trenches,
- 15:59offensive and defensive line. But we took a Dom Orange out
- 16:02because she's on another level. We linebackers huge, secondary
- 16:07huge and the numbers 3. But it's a rivalry.
- 16:10Yeah, and and and Campbell has not beaten Ference there.
- 16:14That's right, got to go back to 2011, which was an incredible
- 16:18game. Was that all the overtimes?
- 16:20That was 4441, just a a tremendous football game that
- 16:24was so much fun. And a phenomenal picture in the
- 16:26register. That's right, right.
- 16:28The game-winning diving in. Yes, the game-winning touchdown.
- 16:32Phenomenal picture in what used to be a newspaper.
- 16:35Actually, she used to come to your door or you go to the a
- 16:38convenience store or high V had stacks of but you had to get
- 16:42there early because they'd sell out.
- 16:44The last time that Iowa State's won this game by more than a
- 16:48field goal, you know when that was.
- 16:51The last time, say it again. Iowa State's won this game by
- 16:54more than a field goal. Four more points.
- 16:59It wasn't the 1st. One.
- 17:01No, no, it wasn't that one. Not that far back.
- 17:03Not 97. What year was it?
- 17:0620 years ago 2005 Top 10 Iowa making their way to Jack tries
- 17:10through take take it's not. Down on the right side of the.
- 17:14Aisle 23 Three The final of that one.
- 17:16That was the last time the Cyclones won by.
- 17:18More than 3? Isn't that something?
- 17:20I think we're trending to the cyclones winning by more than
- 17:22three of this one. But I feel the same way.
- 17:26I picked Iowa before the season. I just thought it was their turn
- 17:29based on nothing more than that because it is usually a you win,
- 17:32we win, you win, we win type of deal.
- 17:37I'm not saying that me or I'm not a we, I want to make that
- 17:41clear. But yeah, it looks if if I had
- 17:44to, you know, if I was forced to bet, I would bet Iowa State
- 17:47right now. I think Rocco Beck might be the
- 17:50biggest edge in the game when it comes to the positions Mark
- 17:55Gronowski's played in championship games.
- 17:58Didn't look like a champion. It was awful.
- 18:00It was awful how bad it is. Some of the shows are getting
- 18:03calls from because we're statewide.
- 18:05Now, yeah, yeah. You know you guys are on in.
- 18:07Iowa City? Yeah, exactly.
- 18:08And we're going to call a spade a spade.
- 18:10Advertisers can't be happy with what they're hearing.
- 18:12I'm never, I'm never going to frequent any of those places.
- 18:15Welcome to sports talk radio. Yes, this is not, Yeah,
- 18:18university based programming. No, that's not what this is.
- 18:21Yeah, this is actually telling what we see and what we feel.
- 18:24That's what we do here. You know, that's funny.
- 18:27All right, we're going to talk baseball.
- 18:28When we come back, we'll get back to the football.
- 18:31Matt Snyder on MLB coming up just quick.
- 18:34George Raveling passed away. What a life, What a life long
- 18:37life. But Jordan says without him,
- 18:40there would not be any Air Jordan because it was George
- 18:44Raveling who kept chirping to him and to his family.
- 18:48You got to go to Nike, you got to go to Nike, you got to go to
- 18:50Nike. And that's obviously ultimately
- 18:53the decision that they made. And that worked out well for
- 18:55both Nike and for the Jordan family.
- 18:58But how long did they stay at the game last night?
- 19:01You know, the cutaways? They didn't.
- 19:03They were before the game after the first drive and never saw
- 19:05him again afterwards. I wonder when they left snuck
- 19:09out. There, you stick around and
- 19:11you're just BS in with some people you know too.
- 19:13I guess maybe it's not even about the football game at that
- 19:15point. It's about everything else.
- 19:17George Raveling. My memories of George Raveling,
- 19:20they're very, very famous because.
- 19:21He was what, in the mid 80s? Mid 80s so really, and it's
- 19:25probably his final season that I remember the only thing that I.
- 19:28Remember 86 or 87. It was the 8586 season.
- 19:31Yeah, because 8687 was Doctor Tom's first, the Elite Eight
- 19:34team. And I just remember, and it's
- 19:37funny in this day and age and hearing you complain about
- 19:39people that have to dress up for work as my grandpa did not like
- 19:43that. He wore a jumpsuit on the
- 19:44sideline. He did.
- 19:45He did not. He despised that.
- 19:48Looked like a ball. Coach put on a suit and tie.
- 19:51My grandpa did not like that. He was not all well.
- 19:55And he came off of Loot too. And Loot was well dressed.
- 20:00Well liked? Yep.
- 20:02Not just by fans. By both.
- 20:03And by the female fans. Yep.
- 20:05Without a doubt and. Remember here my grandma talk
- 20:06about that too. She miss loot Doctor Todd was
- 20:09not the same kind of look and but George Raffling what a life
- 20:13what a career having being there for Martin Luther King yes and
- 20:19getting the speech the I have a dream speech right.
- 20:22He had that he did throughout his career.
- 20:25Great accomplishment and and a lot of great memories.
- 20:27Yeah, no doubt about it. I didn't know that about the the
- 20:30style address on the sidelines. Or a jumpsuit.
- 20:33The maybe the maybe the one of the few good things that came
- 20:36out of the COVID air for my money is coach is no longer for
- 20:38a shirt and tie and when they're coaching hoops anyways, take
- 20:41your time. I'll come back with talk some
- 20:42baseball with our friend Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com.
- 20:45Our weekly baseball segment is next.
- 20:47Elliot Clough coming up in hour number two.
- 20:49Likewise, Bill Bender, Miller and Condon underway on a
- 20:53Tuesday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 20:54Network. By 12:30 on a Tuesday, Miller in
- 21:03Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network, Trent and I with you
- 21:07until two hour #2 Elliott cleft between listening to Hawkeye
- 21:11players. I saw Mark Gronowski was one of
- 21:13those players that met the media, so we'll get an update on
- 21:15that. And prior to listening to Kirk,
- 21:17Ference Elliott will join us at one Bill Bennett from The
- 21:19Sporting News at 1:30. Let's talk some baseball right
- 21:22now. We do it each and every week
- 21:24with our friend Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com, where he covers
- 21:28Major League Baseball and he joins us.
- 21:30Well, you're in my books. My bad books because last time
- 21:33we I grudgingly went to talk about my Blue Jays and the
- 21:36bullpen. And since since we've talked,
- 21:39they've lost four games and the bullpen has blown three of
- 21:42those. It's just awful right now.
- 21:45And there's no. Yeah.
- 21:46And the the Yankees and Red Sox are creeping on up there.
- 21:51They are out both of them. They've got one series against
- 21:54both of them. So you could look at that as
- 21:57it's an opportunity to take care of business on your own and bury
- 21:59them. But obviously there's the fear
- 22:02that the teams, the challengers win those theories and creep
- 22:06even closer. So it's going to be interesting
- 22:09to see that division. Let's look at the Yankees in
- 22:12particular in the next two weeks.
- 22:15They've got Astros, Tigers, Blue Jays and Red Sox.
- 22:19Good. So that is a gauntlet.
- 22:23Of course, from the Yankees perspective, you can say, you
- 22:25know, if they go through and they play well, they could,
- 22:29well, they could well have the best record in the American
- 22:31League at the end of it. But if things fall off the
- 22:33rails, they could also be kind of barely even clinging to a
- 22:37playoff spot. And the Rangers are only a game
- 22:39and a half out of that last playoff spot right now.
- 22:41So very interesting to watch in the next few weeks.
- 22:45But yeah, the Blue Jays, the bullpen is definitely concerning
- 22:50because the rotation looks like it's OK.
- 22:52The lineup still looks very, very good.
- 22:55Got to try to hold it together for another 3-4 weeks there with
- 22:59that bullpen. How much is Boba Check going to
- 23:01make? Is he number two behind?
- 23:04It's hard. To Tucker right now, you think?
- 23:07I think so, yeah. And it's difficult because he
- 23:13was so, so, so good. And then last year was just a
- 23:16disaster. Injury riddled Andy was
- 23:18terrible. But this year he's back to
- 23:21basically the exact same guy he was.
- 23:23And this is his highest batting average in a full season.
- 23:27So not as much power. Like, I think when you're
- 23:32heading into free agency, you'd like to see him up around 30
- 23:34home runs. He's probably going to end up
- 23:36around 20. But I mean, leading the majors
- 23:38in hits, leading the majors in double S, hitting over 300, he's
- 23:42back to being that very, very productive guy.
- 23:46Shortstop. We've seen a lot of shortstops
- 23:48break the bank recently. I mean, you can go down to like
- 23:51Dansby Swanson and Javi Baez. Like there's a lot of guys who
- 23:54have made Xander Bogart's got an 11 year deal, like Corey Seeger
- 23:57and Marcus Simeon got huge deals and Bichette's 27.
- 24:01So yeah, I mean, over 200 for sure, right?
- 24:06Like 250. I'm even thinking like you might
- 24:10see 300 million. Monster money and a guy that is
- 24:15wigging it well, seeing it. Well, Speaking of that division,
- 24:18the way it's set right now, we would get potentially, you know,
- 24:21red soxy. I mean, if baseball could sign
- 24:24up for that again, they got Dodgers, Yankees, of course, in
- 24:26the World Series, if they could get a playoff series again,
- 24:28because, you know, we remember 2004, remember everything else.
- 24:32It's just not at the same kind of level.
- 24:34If they could get something like that, Major League Baseball
- 24:37would have to sign up to get another Yankees Red Sox series.
- 24:41Absolutely. And I'm sure in their heart of
- 24:43hearts, like if you injected them with truth theorem, they
- 24:46would rather it somehow let's mess that up and have one of
- 24:49them won the division. So maybe you can get an ALCS
- 24:52that maybe goes seven games because the only bad thing about
- 24:55getting them in the wild card round is it would only be 3
- 24:58games. So like, man, we need to try to
- 25:00milk this thing. But yeah, I mean, if Red Sox,
- 25:03Yankees class series would be amazing.
- 25:05I don't feel like it's over saturated at this point because
- 25:09we haven't seen them in the playoffs much since the early
- 25:122000s. I I believe one time was it
- 25:162018, I think there was Red Sox, Yankees and and and LD ALDS.
- 25:22So we like we haven't seen it a ton.
- 25:24It hasn't been done to death anymore.
- 25:27So yeah, that that would be pretty fun.
- 25:28Yeah, the networks would love it.
- 25:30No, no doubt about that. Let's let's go to the West and
- 25:33just spend and spend a minute kind of talking about that
- 25:36division in Houston right now has the the what, three games in
- 25:40front? Mariners, Texas, any of those
- 25:44two, who do you like to perhaps run them down?
- 25:47Rangers won't go away. Mariners, they just kind of spin
- 25:51their wheels when I watch them. Are will the Astros ultimately
- 25:54win? Or are are they, you know,
- 25:56looking over their shoulder? I think the Astros will win it.
- 26:01If I had to pick one to run down, it would be the Mariners
- 26:03that. But they have they have a lineup
- 26:07that should perform pretty well. I know that gets the press when
- 26:10they're at home, but the rotation for the Mariners, it's
- 26:13supposed to be one of their calling cards.
- 26:15And it has not been very good since the trade deadline at all.
- 26:18Like Louise Castillo is broken right now.
- 26:21You know, they're not getting what they thought they were
- 26:24going to get from someone like, let's say, Bryce Miller, who's
- 26:28been bad pretty much all year, George Kirby, Logan Gilbert, not
- 26:31near as good as they were hoping.
- 26:33Basically, Brian Wu is the one who is throwing well.
- 26:36And everybody else is like either average or just looking,
- 26:40like I said, broken like Louise Luis Castillo does.
- 26:42But they have enough talent they could pull together in the
- 26:46rotation there. And I still really, really like
- 26:48that line up. I mean, since they added Naylor
- 26:51and Eugenio Suarez to Randy Razzarena, Julio Rodriguez,
- 26:54who's looks really good at the second-half, Cal Raleigh, that's
- 26:58a good line up there. So I still have faith that the
- 27:01Mariners could get hot. It just feels like, as you said,
- 27:04anytime they get right up on the Astros, then they kind of fall
- 27:07apart for a little short stretch there.
- 27:09So it just doesn't seem like it's meant to be.
- 27:11Still not throwing dirt on the Royals.
- 27:13I I feel like there's still a chance there.
- 27:15This team offense. 2 1/2 games they were. 29th in baseball and
- 27:23run scored in home runs going into the All Star break.
- 27:25Since then, they're up to 12th in runs scored, eighth in home
- 27:28runs. Pasquotino has been outstanding.
- 27:31I'll be obviously Bobby Witt is who he is.
- 27:33Garcia, he's been tremendous and and Garcia's just 25 years old.
- 27:37I mean, it just feels like a guy that's been around a whole lot
- 27:39longer than that. Even if it doesn't happen for
- 27:41this season, it feels like the the base is in place that this
- 27:45is going to be a team in contention next year.
- 27:46Do you see it that way? Absolutely, yes.
- 27:49And how about Mike Yastrzemski, 34 year old?
- 27:51They pick him up at the trade deadline.
- 27:53Seven home runs since then in 27 games.
- 27:57It's unbelievable. He's getting on base, but he's
- 27:59also heading for power. It's like he's freed from, you
- 28:03know what, Oracle Park or whatever they call it, San
- 28:05Francisco now. They would interest me a lot
- 28:11more if the rotation looked like we thought it was going to look
- 28:16heading into the year. And that would be with both Cole
- 28:19Reagan's and Chris Boobich in the rotation there instead of
- 28:22them having to try to piece together.
- 28:23But like, Noah Cameron has been really, really good.
- 28:26Seth Lugo still Seth Lugo. And they grabbed Ryan Berger
- 28:29from the Padres in front of the trade deadline and he's doing
- 28:32well, too. So it's they've got a really
- 28:36good thing going right now. And yeah, I agree with you,
- 28:39Trent, I don't think we can count them out at all.
- 28:42The American League is, and I wrote about this in power
- 28:44rankings today, a couple weeks ago, I said, OK, there's a clear
- 28:47cut top 2. We've been saying all year it's
- 28:49wide open. But now the Blue Jays, Tigers
- 28:52have separated themselves. Well, now they've both kind of
- 28:55come back a little bit. And I think again, you can
- 28:56declare the American League is completely wide open.
- 29:00There are the six teams in playoff position right now.
- 29:02Would not surprise you if they went to the world theory.
- 29:05And I think then you could loop, loop in the Rangers and Royals
- 29:08as well and say, you know, they've got a shot and if you
- 29:10make it, you've got a shot to go to the World Series because
- 29:13there are Achilles heels with every big team.
- 29:16Like the Tigers rotation behind school ball is terrible right
- 29:19now. The Blue Jays, as we already
- 29:21discussed, the bullpens in shambles.
- 29:23So it's the Astros continue to have their fair share of
- 29:26problems. It's.
- 29:27Wide open what? How about the National League?
- 29:29Is it wide open? Yeah, probably.
- 29:32I'm not not as not to the same extent because you could see
- 29:37we've seen how good the Brewers can be and the Phillies
- 29:42obviously losing Wheeler is a big, big blow, but it still
- 29:46feels like the Brewers, Phillies and Dodgers could go into
- 29:49powerhouse mode in October. No, Padres don't Nah, they just
- 29:54don't slug. And I'm worried about the
- 29:56rotation, like King still hurt, don't see is still unreliable.
- 30:01Only the Pirates have fewer home runs than the Padres this season
- 30:05and the entire majors, not just the NL.
- 30:08So I, yeah, you know, and maybe the Cubs could too.
- 30:11But there's just been so many up and down, ups and downs.
- 30:14I just feel like there's a lot more the, the, the upside is a
- 30:19lot higher in the National League with a few of those teams
- 30:22where it looks like, remember how the Astros went gangbusters
- 30:25through the Ala couple of years ago when they went seven and O
- 30:27on the AL side? I believe it's 2022.
- 30:30Feels like at least three, maybe even four teams on the National
- 30:34League could do that. And then the American League
- 30:36side, I just don't see that at all.
- 30:38Should the Cubs be concerned about Polencia at the back end
- 30:41bullpen? His his his disappointing
- 30:43audience have become when there hasn't been a save on the line.
- 30:47He's come in a tie game in the 9th inning.
- 30:49Hasn't gone well, but I don't think he's been the same guy
- 30:51since late June. Still pretty good.
- 30:55There's it just it doesn't seem like he knows where it's going a
- 30:58lot of time, especially with the fastball.
- 30:59Like it almost feels like he overthrows, which I can't judge
- 31:02that I'm I don't know if he's overthrowing or not.
- 31:04I'm just saying it looks like it when he throws it 101 and it's,
- 31:08you know, the catcher setting up blowing away and it ends up high
- 31:10and it just seems like he's just throwing it as hard as he can
- 31:13and he doesn't have any command on it.
- 31:15And meanwhile, Brad Keller is as reliable as any reliever right
- 31:19now. So I could see a little switch
- 31:22there. The only issue is then, well, if
- 31:24you were shaky in the with Palencia now and you flip them
- 31:27now, you're shaky in the 8th. So it's like, did we really
- 31:30solve the problem there? But yeah, I I mean, I'll admit
- 31:35when he comes in and it's only a one run game, I kind of get that
- 31:39gulp, uh oh, what's going to happen here?
- 31:41Feeling. What's going on with PCA?
- 31:45The power's been completely sapped.
- 31:47He's always going to be a Big Whip fastball, yes.
- 31:49What's going on there with PCA? I think he was probably just way
- 31:54better in the first half than he should have been.
- 31:56And there's just course corrections all over the place
- 31:58here. I mean, remember heading into
- 32:00the year, I believe you guys asked me like, what's his
- 32:03offensive upside? And I said maybe around league
- 32:06average, batting average and 2015 to 20 home runs.
- 32:09We hit over 20 in the first half and most people in the scouting
- 32:13community didn't think he was ever going to hit 30, You know,
- 32:16and he's probably going to hit 30 maybe.
- 32:18I mean, it sounds weird when he has 28, but he might not hit two
- 32:20more the rest of the year. But it's to be talking about him
- 32:24as a possible 4040 guy at the All Star break.
- 32:27We probably should have seen it coming that nobody thought he
- 32:30was going to be this good of a hitter, and certainly not this
- 32:33soon. If it was ever, hey, he might
- 32:35hit 35 home runs in a season. I think he would have said, OK,
- 32:39well, that's by the time he's 2829, thirty years old, not when
- 32:42he's 23. So honestly, he was probably
- 32:45just too good in the first half. And this is just the kind of the
- 32:49baseball gods and the marathon that is the Major League
- 32:52Baseball season coming for him. Love it.
- 32:54MVP of this team is who? I still think it's probably PCA.
- 33:01Do you? Because you have to take the
- 33:03whole whole whole picture of the season.
- 33:05Could I interest you in Nico Horner?
- 33:09Yeah, he's definitely he's so reliable defensively and on the
- 33:15bases as well. I would go, I would go PCA if I
- 33:19look at the whole picture because one of the reasons the
- 33:21Cubs were so good in the first half was because it was so much
- 33:24better than expectations. And even not being a good since
- 33:27the All Star break, you don't give all that back.
- 33:30But yeah, I Nico's in the mix. You know who else might be?
- 33:33And actually if you if you look at I just clicked on the Cubs to
- 33:36look at WAR PCA first, Nico 2nd and then Tuckers third, Dairies
- 33:414th. How?
- 33:42About Carson Kelly the year, he said.
- 33:44Surprise. Well, yeah, he was so good in
- 33:48the first two months or so, and then he was still good yesterday
- 33:51as well. In between, Not so much.
- 33:53True, he had eleven home runs in like 2 months and now he has 14.
- 33:58But like the Cubs, what they've gotten from the catcher position
- 34:01as a whole this year, mostly Carson Kelly, but also
- 34:06production from Reese McGuire when he's been there.
- 34:08Production from Miguel Amaya at the start of the year before he
- 34:10got hurt and then he came back, got hurt again.
- 34:12The Cubs have gotten so much from catcher and the last couple
- 34:16years they had been one of the worst teams in baseball at
- 34:18production behind the plate. So that's another area where
- 34:21along with PCA where they got so much more than they were
- 34:25expecting. Saw the Cardinals head in
- 34:27attendance under 20,000 for the first time and I think it was
- 34:30eons. But what do you do with that
- 34:33organization? They said for the last couple of
- 34:35years, we're not going to tear this thing down.
- 34:37Is it time? Is it time to really go into
- 34:40true true rebuild mode? Well, they probably, in terms of
- 34:45salaries keeping them down and staying cheap, yeah, I think
- 34:48they can do that. But they have a lot of talent
- 34:53that's younger, you know, between, you know, Mason, when
- 34:57Victor Scott, Yvonne Herrera, those guys are all 25 or less
- 35:01right now. Maybe there's still a chance
- 35:03with Jordan Walker, who's still 23.
- 35:05Maybe there's still a chance with Nolan Gorman who's 25.
- 35:07Like they have guys early mid 20s who look like they're pretty
- 35:12talented players and they can build around those guys.
- 35:15I think they need to just not bother with the veterans.
- 35:18Like let's say for example, a couple years ago and it looks
- 35:21fine at the time, but Sonny Gray signing, they probably don't
- 35:24need to do that for a few more years.
- 35:26They need to just stick with the youth movement, keep the
- 35:29salaries down and build up the farm system.
- 35:31And they're probably in that mode.
- 35:32So tear down might not be the right phrase.
- 35:36But yeah, I would say that don't be one of those teams that's
- 35:40trying to contend by signing some veterans that are more
- 35:44expensive. I think you just need to say
- 35:46we're playing for 2027 or 2028 going into next year.
- 35:51My last thing for you and and it seems like it's inevitable, but
- 35:55there's about to be this offseason a former number one
- 35:58overall pick on the market. That's Adly Rushman, who if I
- 36:02was still buying rookie baseball cards as something to put away
- 36:05and hopefully the value goes. I thought rushman was going to
- 36:08be any type of player and he stillwell may be, but these
- 36:11aren't seemingly, but Basalo's taking his spot right be.
- 36:13They gave him all the money. Rushman then width and Andrew
- 36:16Vaughn was 123. What's happened to adly rushman?
- 36:20He seemed like he was headed to Cooperstown when he broke in.
- 36:23It was. Yeah, around the All Star break
- 36:26last year, he just stopped hitting.
- 36:28He was terrible in the second-half last year and that's
- 36:31carried over into this year. And you're looking right now at
- 36:33227 batting average, sub 400 slugging.
- 36:37His slugging last year fell down under 400 as well.
- 36:39Like I said, with that terrible second-half.
- 36:41So we're we're more than a year of him being just broken at the
- 36:46plate. Maybe a change of scenery is
- 36:48needed. He's a switch hitter.
- 36:51He he he's fine as a receiver behind the plate.
- 36:54But it it looked like he was going to be a superstar.
- 36:57I mean, he finished 10th in MVP voting in 2023, finished ninth,
- 37:01top 10, ninth in MVP voting in 2023 and was still great in the
- 37:06first half last year. But ever since then, he's
- 37:08completely falling apart. Yeah.
- 37:11And. And The thing is, he's not as
- 37:13young as a lot of people might think.
- 37:15He's 27. Why do?
- 37:17You realize that? Yeah, he was.
- 37:20When they drafted him, he was already old for a college player
- 37:24and he was 24 when he got to the bigs, so he did not.
- 37:27We're used to seeing these debuts in 20/21/22.
- 37:30He didn't debut till 24. So yeah, he's 27 years old.
- 37:33It's concerning. I would be interested to see if
- 37:38the Orioles did kind of put him on the market.
- 37:41You would think a lot of teams would be interested and think
- 37:43that they could fix him offensively and he's good behind
- 37:46the plate. He's a switch hitter, seems like
- 37:48a good clubhouse guy, but he just stopped hitting.
- 37:53He's completely stopped hitting. And we have to stop talking
- 37:56because we've gone over our break time.
- 37:57We got to do this next week as we will.

- 39:00Who decided? You know why?
- 39:00We're gonna take Bradley Chubb, This Allen guy, we'll let him go
