- 0:00Speaker 1: On sevent ten, WOI inn from Mark Today. Here's Ken Rosato.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Very good to be with you on your Halloween Friday.
- 0:07Speaker 1: She is a Republican New York City council woman representing
- 0:11Speaker 1: District thirty two, which includes Glendale, Wood Haven, OZP, Howard Beach,
- 0:16Speaker 1: Broad Channel in parts of Rockaway Peninsula, Queens. Previously, she
- 0:19Speaker 1: was the chairwoman of the Queen's Republican Party, and she's
- 0:23Speaker 1: here to talk about the mayor's race and what a
- 0:25Speaker 1: possible Mamdani mayoralty would mean to New York City. We say,
- 0:29Speaker 1: good morning, Joe Anne Ariola, welcome to the Mark Simone Show.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Good morning and thank you. It's great to be here.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Good to have you on. You know, whenever I have
- 0:38Speaker 1: the rare Republican council member out, I always say ask,
- 0:42Speaker 1: does do you need like a giant bottle like the
- 0:44Speaker 1: thousand bottle of Toms to be on your desk to
- 0:47Speaker 1: get through your day?
- 0:50Speaker 2: Not at all. I'm used to fighting the good fight,
- 0:53Speaker 2: and I'm the minority leader at the New York City
- 0:56Speaker 2: Council and I work very well with my more moderate
- 0:59Speaker 2: colleague on the other side of the aisle, and we
- 1:02Speaker 2: have been able to get things done. So, yes, we
- 1:05Speaker 2: have days they are more challenging than others, but most
- 1:08Speaker 2: days we get things done.
- 1:09Speaker 1: But you know, you look at you look at a
- 1:11Speaker 1: Mayor Adams, and as much as Mayor Adams is a
- 1:13Speaker 1: Democrat for sure, but Mayor Adams there because he was
- 1:16Speaker 1: a police captain. There is an adult side of Mayor
- 1:20Speaker 1: Adams who when he did things, you kind of trusted him.
- 1:24Speaker 1: He was a mayor. When you have a guy like
- 1:27Speaker 1: Zornmumdani potentially coming in as mayor, what goes through your
- 1:31Speaker 1: mind as a Republican on the city Council.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Well, I think you make a good comparison. You say
- 1:37Speaker 2: that Mayor Adams, who had government's experience, who was a
- 1:42Speaker 2: police officer and came in and is you know, is
- 1:46Speaker 2: quite possibly going to go down as the worst mayor
- 1:49Speaker 2: and with the most corruption in his administration of any
- 1:52Speaker 2: mayor in the history of New York City. And then
- 1:55Speaker 2: you have Zora Mumdani, who you know has even less experience.
- 2:01Speaker 2: He's a member of the DSA. He is not a Democrat.
- 2:05Speaker 2: And and it's sorry to say that the Democratic Party
- 2:08Speaker 2: has been devoured by the Democratic Socialists of America. So
- 2:12Speaker 2: I always make the analogy of Mayor Adams is walking
- 2:15Speaker 2: out of City Hall and lighting the match. And if
- 2:19Speaker 2: Zoram Mamdani should God forbid, when that New York City
- 2:24Speaker 2: will fall to ashes. Well.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Of the promises that Mamdani has made, you know how
- 2:29Speaker 1: many of them could actually be done by the mayor.
- 2:31Speaker 1: I mean, for instance, a rent freeze. He can't freeze
- 2:34Speaker 1: the rent, right you have a rent control board in
- 2:36Speaker 1: New York City.
- 2:38Speaker 2: This is all speaking to a demographic that wants everything
- 2:41Speaker 2: for free. So he's telling people what they want to hear.
- 2:43Speaker 2: He doesn't realize. Well he does realize, I'm sure he does.
- 2:47Speaker 2: But people want to say, oh, yes, we can free
- 2:48Speaker 2: the rent. No he can't free the rent. We can
- 2:50Speaker 2: give you a free tuition. No, he can't give you
- 2:52Speaker 2: free tuition, free, free, free, free, free. And you know,
- 2:55Speaker 2: most younger voters would say, hey, if it's free, it's
- 2:58Speaker 2: for me. But you know, he can't do that. That
- 3:01Speaker 2: has to come from a state, in a federal level.
- 3:03Speaker 2: There's very little that he can do on any of
- 3:06Speaker 2: his policies as a mayor. And that's why I believe
- 3:09Speaker 2: that he just doesn't have the competency to do it.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, every time you say free, I think
- 3:14Speaker 1: people don't understand that nothing is free. That the reality
- 3:18Speaker 1: is somebody somewhere, somehow has to pay for it, because
- 3:23Speaker 1: in society, somebody has to do the work to produce
- 3:26Speaker 1: the product that you are talking about giving away free,
- 3:29Speaker 1: whether it be freezing the rent. Now we talked about
- 3:32Speaker 1: this earlier.
- 3:33Speaker 2: You know.
- 3:33Speaker 1: The fact is the city and the state imposed so
- 3:36Speaker 1: many regulations on landlords. You have to maintain an active
- 3:40Speaker 1: heating system, air conditioning in some cases, paint has to
- 3:43Speaker 1: be done, You get inspected all the time. You have
- 3:45Speaker 1: to have the exterminator in. You have to have windows replaced.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Then you have the case of kids or or some
- 3:52Speaker 1: vandal type people in a lot of the lower income
- 3:56Speaker 1: housing that destroy things. You could have an elevator replaced.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Remember when I was a Channel seven, there was one
- 4:02Speaker 1: building I went to and the people were complaining the
- 4:04Speaker 1: elevator's broken. And I went there and there were other
- 4:07Speaker 1: residents who came up to me and said, yeah, the
- 4:08Speaker 1: landlord has the elevator fixed every Tuesday and by Wednesday.
- 4:11Speaker 1: There is such and such who lives in an apartments, such
- 4:13Speaker 1: and such who intentionally breaks it. So this is the problem.
- 4:17Speaker 1: You can't now tell a landlord, well you got to
- 4:19Speaker 1: freeze the rent, but you still have to come up
- 4:21Speaker 1: with the money for all of this stuff.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Well that's true. What he's doing is he's giving some
- 4:27Speaker 2: type of fantasy. That's what he's doing, like straight out
- 4:29Speaker 2: of Central Casting and none of the camping done. But
- 4:31Speaker 2: no one's thinking about who are you said it right? Ken?
- 4:35Speaker 2: Who are the economic engines here? Your small landlords, your
- 4:38Speaker 2: business owners, your tax payers, your city workers, your people
- 4:43Speaker 2: who go to work in our hospitals, the people who
- 4:45Speaker 2: go and grind it out every day and pay their
- 4:47Speaker 2: taxes and keep this city going. And that's exactly who
- 4:50Speaker 2: will leave if there is a mayor Mom Donnie. And
- 4:54Speaker 2: he doesn't care about that. That's not what his focus is.
- 4:57Speaker 2: His focus is to destroy or this city. He will
- 5:01Speaker 2: not change the bail reform laws, he will not lower
- 5:04Speaker 2: the age, he will he will not change the discovery laws.
- 5:09Speaker 2: And even Janel Lieber from the MTA said he will
- 5:13Speaker 2: not be able to give free fairs. So even people
- 5:17Speaker 2: who may agree with him on some level of ideology
- 5:21Speaker 2: are saying, no, you can't do that, that's not within
- 5:24Speaker 2: your purview. He should be talking about raising the age
- 5:28Speaker 2: so that young criminals are held accountable. He should be
- 5:31Speaker 2: talking about bail reforms so people can go and have
- 5:34Speaker 2: consequences for the crimes they commit. He should be talking
- 5:37Speaker 2: about about bringing police on instead, he's just dancing around
- 5:44Speaker 2: it with his public safety ambassadors. I don't want a
- 5:48Speaker 2: public safety ambassador. I want a police officer on the street.
- 5:52Speaker 2: And we're not going to get police officers to take
- 5:54Speaker 2: the test and become officers if the reforms that were
- 5:59Speaker 2: made stay in place, and with Mamdani, you will advocate
- 6:03Speaker 2: for even more dismantling of our public safety system.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Seven ten wo R The Voice of New York. This
- 6:10Speaker 1: is the Mark Simon Show. Ken rozottowin from Mark on
- 6:12Speaker 1: Halloween Friday, and with us right now is New York
- 6:15Speaker 1: City Republican councilwoman, the minority leader of the City Council,
- 6:19Speaker 1: Joanne Ariola, who's from Queens. It's good to have you
- 6:22Speaker 1: here again. Let's talk about one statistic that really frightened me,
- 6:26Speaker 1: and that is that sixty nine percent of all New
- 6:29Speaker 1: York City residents age fifty and under support Mamdani. How
- 6:36Speaker 1: the hell do we arrive at that? What is going
- 6:39Speaker 1: on in our education system in this city. That's sixty
- 6:42Speaker 1: nine percent of people not under the age of twenty,
- 6:46Speaker 1: not under the age of thirty, councilwoman, under the age
- 6:50Speaker 1: of fifty. You would think that by the time you
- 6:51Speaker 1: hit forty forty five you were mature enough to understand
- 6:54Speaker 1: things are not free.
- 6:58Speaker 2: You would think that, But you're going to schools, they're
- 7:00Speaker 2: going to colleges, they're going to universities where the instructors,
- 7:04Speaker 2: the professors, the people who are there, the mentors they
- 7:07Speaker 2: are indoctrinating, are young and telling them that you're room.
- 7:12Speaker 2: You shouldn't have to pay your taxes, you shouldn't have
- 7:14Speaker 2: to pay your tuition, you shouldn't have to pay your loans,
- 7:16Speaker 2: you shouldn't have to pay for anything. You shouldn't have
- 7:18Speaker 2: to pay to ride the bus. And I don't know
- 7:20Speaker 2: why because and this is something that was talked to
- 7:23Speaker 2: to Mamdani from a little child. Both his parents, who
- 7:26Speaker 2: are megal wealthy, you know, reach the free ideology and
- 7:32Speaker 2: this is what he was raised on and that he
- 7:36Speaker 2: can if you can tell me can anywhere that socialism
- 7:39Speaker 2: or communism works, that I say, great, but it has
- 7:42Speaker 2: never worked. It's always fallen. And we are America and
- 7:46Speaker 2: we're a capitalist country and we thrive on entrepreneurship and
- 7:52Speaker 2: people going to school and getting their degrees and paying
- 7:55Speaker 2: their taxes. And yes, loans can become very different cult
- 8:00Speaker 2: to pay if you become a doctor or a lawyer
- 8:03Speaker 2: or a teacher, but that is something that you've chosen
- 8:05Speaker 2: to do and there are ways to help you pay that.
- 8:09Speaker 2: But free, that's an impossibility. That is, that's just a fantasy.
- 8:14Speaker 2: And to be able to keep this city going when
- 8:17Speaker 2: we can't support our subway system as it is, and
- 8:21Speaker 2: people are jumping the fairs all the time anyway, and
- 8:23Speaker 2: we're not enforcing that. So so you know, in a way,
- 8:26Speaker 2: we do have free transit system, but what did that
- 8:29Speaker 2: get us? Congestion pricing to make up the difference, and
- 8:32Speaker 2: we still.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Haven't made it up. We're billions in the hole in
- 8:35Speaker 1: spite of that. If you take a look, and I
- 8:36Speaker 1: don't mean to step on your councilwoman, if you look
- 8:38Speaker 1: at all the free that the fair jumpers, the people
- 8:41Speaker 1: who walked on buses. And when I was a Channel
- 8:42Speaker 1: seven we had bus drivers. There were two who used
- 8:44Speaker 1: to call and say, yeah, the mayor will not allow
- 8:47Speaker 1: us to do what we used to do. If somebody
- 8:48Speaker 1: walked on the bus and didn't pay their fare, bus
- 8:50Speaker 1: driver would pull aside and say I'm not moving until
- 8:53Speaker 1: you get off, or I'm going to call a cop today,
- 8:55Speaker 1: or at that point then the mayor, I guess it
- 8:58Speaker 1: was Mayor to Blasier at the time. Marriedor Blasio said,
- 9:01Speaker 1: can't do that, let them on for free, and so
- 9:03Speaker 1: nobody was paying for the bus. So you're right that
- 9:05Speaker 1: was happening. They lost about four hundred million a year
- 9:09Speaker 1: in fairs. Well if you can't keep doing that, what
- 9:12Speaker 1: happens after four or five years, you're two billion dollars
- 9:15Speaker 1: in the hole, which is exactly what they were.
- 9:18Speaker 2: That's exactly right. And even in today's administration, police officers
- 9:22Speaker 2: that are in the subway are asked to hands out
- 9:24Speaker 2: literature to educate people that they should be paying when
- 9:28Speaker 2: they go onto the bus or in the subway. And
- 9:31Speaker 2: I really it blows my mind because I think that,
- 9:33Speaker 2: first our police officers have a lot of better things
- 9:36Speaker 2: to do than handout literature. And secondly, everybody knows you
- 9:39Speaker 2: have to pay a fare when you go into the
- 9:41Speaker 2: subway or you take a bus, but there's no consequences
- 9:45Speaker 2: and that's what brings me back to Mom Donnie and Cuomo.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Cuomo started this. He started this bail reform, he started
- 9:52Speaker 2: no castles bail, he started raising age. He gave people
- 9:57Speaker 2: license to permit crimes without impunity and without consequence. And
- 10:03Speaker 2: that's why you can and I have to ring a
- 10:06Speaker 2: bell and have a woman come or a man come
- 10:08Speaker 2: with a key to give us the dorance. It's just
- 10:11Speaker 2: not right. But who's thinking for all the shoplifting that's
- 10:14Speaker 2: going on. You and I are because we're standing on
- 10:16Speaker 2: the line and paying sixty and eighty dollars at the
- 10:18Speaker 2: cashier while people who are coming in and a lot
- 10:23Speaker 2: of them our used because there are no consequences filling
- 10:26Speaker 2: up a knapsack and running out the door. It's just
- 10:29Speaker 2: a vicious cycle that will turn into an absolute chaos
- 10:34Speaker 2: if Mom Donny wins. And that's why I so strongly
- 10:37Speaker 2: support Curtis Lee. Well, he's the only one saying the
- 10:41Speaker 2: things that we're talking about at our kitchen tables and
- 10:44Speaker 2: what we're afraid of that's going to happen to the
- 10:47Speaker 2: city and what would make us move if the city
- 10:52Speaker 2: continues in this particular progress, It just can't go on
- 10:57Speaker 2: like this. People are moving that I never thought would.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Nah and like and even getting back to the CVS
- 11:03Speaker 1: is and the Walgreens and whatnot. When you know, I've
- 11:05Speaker 1: heard people say on the left, well insurance pace for that,
- 11:08Speaker 1: no insurance pace for it, once or twice, and then
- 11:10Speaker 1: they cancel. You. People don't realize that they can cancel
- 11:13Speaker 1: the individual stores and that they have dropped stores. And
- 11:16Speaker 1: then CBS, Walgreens their self insured at that point, which
- 11:19Speaker 1: means it comes out of their pocket, you know where
- 11:21Speaker 1: they get it from. You and me. Prices go up
- 11:23Speaker 1: so we all pay for it one way or the other. Ah,
- 11:26Speaker 1: we could talk about it forever. Let's keep our fingers crossed. Everybody,
- 11:29Speaker 1: get out and vote, that's the important thing.
- 11:32Speaker 2: And out and vote, and if you want to still
- 11:34Speaker 2: have a voice with your representatives in city Hall, vote
- 11:38Speaker 2: no on the propositions.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Amen. New York City Republican Councilwoman joe Ane Ariola, It
- 11:43Speaker 1: is such a pleasure to talk to you. Thanks you
- 11:45Speaker 1: for coming on this morning.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Same here, pleasure to be here.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Likewise, good to have you. And this is Candra's outawin
- 11:51Speaker 1: from Mark on your Friday. When we come back, we'll
- 11:53Speaker 1: take more of your calls one eight hundred three two
- 11:55Speaker 1: one zero seven ten for WO R
