- 0:00Well, October is just chugging right along as we went past the
- 0:05halfway point, and now we are, um, we're j- we're just still doing it.
- 0:13Here we are doing October.
- 0:15So today's topic is when no one appreciates how hard you work,
- 0:22and this is one of those areas where we can become discontent as
- 0:31wives and mothers and homemakers.
- 0:34Um, the work is, um, all-consuming.
- 0:41There is so much work to do, and we can think of a lot of ways that
- 0:49people could support us or help us feel better or pitch in and help, and
- 0:56we don't see those things happening.
- 1:00And so we start a little internal pity party for ourselves instead of
- 1:08maybe asking for help in a cheerful, you know, non- argumentative or, you
- 1:16know, harsh way or an accusatory way, but, you know, maybe just asking.
- 1:23Um, we-- When, when we get these kind of self-pity stories in our
- 1:31systems, we, we do derive a, a kind of comfort and coping from them.
- 1:42Like, we're getting something out of it.
- 1:46And so we have to recognize, um, what's really going on, and notice when we
- 1:57can tell a different kind of story.
- 2:00Notice different sets of facts, and recognize maybe when we are spinning
- 2:09an interpretation of the facts in such a way that we're allowed to feel sorry
- 2:16for ourselves, especially in today's culture where it is just the default
- 2:26to assume the status of a victim, where, well, the situation and the
- 2:33other people are making it difficult.
- 2:35It's not me, it's the circumstances.
- 2:38It's the other people, and then that means that there's nothing I can do about it.
- 2:44But there is always something that you can do.
- 2:47There is always a path of faithfulness, and sometimes the interpretation
- 2:54that we spin with certain circumstances and people isn't true.
- 3:01It isn't charitable.
- 3:04It isn't, uh, an interpretation of the events in keeping with how
- 3:12God wants His people to think and relate to other people Um Yes.
- 3:20So we, we do derive comfort from feeling sorry for ourselves.
- 3:28And that's not a healthy kind of comfort.
- 3:32That's not a comfort that brings connection with other people.
- 3:35In fact, it's, it is a turning into self kind of comfort that cuts us
- 3:42off from better connection with those people who we can get support from, our
- 3:49husbands, our kids, friends, family.
- 3:52Um, no one can read our minds.
- 3:56Although it gets easier to read our minds when, um, it buil- when a
- 4:04discontent builds and builds and makes us increasingly irritated and dissatisfied.
- 4:14That becomes evident on our face and in our demeanor.
- 4:18But then that's actually off-putting, right?
- 4:22So the results from self-pity and the kind of, um, internal self-centered
- 4:33comfort that that brings cuts us off from the people who we
- 4:40say we would like support from.
- 4:43And we're more likely to become that dripping faucet or the nagging wife
- 4:50because the internal spin and the self-centered spin that we've put on
- 4:55our circumstances and other people's actions is not godly is not in keeping
- 5:05with how God wants us to think about others or relate to our circumstances
- 5:11or his providence in our lives.
- 5:13Like, are we praying about this?
- 5:15Are we being charitable and putting the best spin on other people's choices?
- 5:21Or are we looking for more ways to make a case for our own self-pity?
- 5:28And that kind of comfort that we derive from the self-pity story is
- 5:36not lasting, is not beneficial, is not gonna take us good places And so we
- 5:43need to recognize it and confess it.
- 5:48We need to confess feeling sorry for ourselves and ask God to give us humility
- 5:57and grace and the comfort of His Holy Spirit and not-- so that we don't look
- 6:04for our own little self-pity comfort, but we get real comfort from the Holy Spirit,
- 6:11which will then turn us outward and help us joyfully serve And then we will be
- 6:22living in light of scripture, which is, "He who waters will himself be watered."
- 6:30Right?
- 6:31If we're looking for other people to appreciate us or do something
- 6:35w- we're-- say, "I just need my cup filled," or, "I just need this, I
- 6:39need that," we are noticing that we, we do have needs, and that's true.
- 6:47But God has given ways for th- our own neediness to be filled, and so
- 6:53we need to not be looking for how we think it ought to be filled or
- 6:57what other people ought to be doing.
- 6:59Are we doing what we ought to, to be doing and accepting the living
- 7:05water that is available to us?
- 7:08Are we reading the Bible every day?
- 7:12Are we praying every day?
- 7:15Are we serving others in love in the normal, mundane work that doesn't
- 7:21feel rewarding in the moment?
- 7:24These are actually ways that the Lord feeds us.
- 7:29Going to church on Sunday.
- 7:32God has provided ways for us to be filled, and He has told us about them in His Word.
- 7:39Are we filling our minds with scripture, meditating on God's Word, or are we
- 7:43meditating on how things are not the way that we would like them to be?
- 7:47And we will be happy, we will be content, we will be joyful after, you know, this,
- 7:53that, and the other thing fall into place.
- 7:55Like, well, that's not the way God says it's going to work.
- 8:00We have to confess discontent and disgruntlement and complaining
- 8:07hearts, which are usually underneath the veneer of self-pity, right?
- 8:13The, the cover of self-pity, feeling sorry for ourselves allows us to see
- 8:22ourselves as the victim who can't help but feel a certain way And so we're-- So
- 8:30it's a protection around discontent and complaining, and it allows us to call
- 8:36it by another name that makes it seem inevitable and definitely less offensive.
- 8:44But the cover is just a veneer, and the heart of discontent is
- 8:51always going to produce more sin, more ugliness, more brokenness.
- 8:59And we have to confess that and practice contentment in our current
- 9:06circumstance, not, "I will be content after this person does this thing
- 9:14they ought to be doing," or, you know, we set up our little requirements
- 9:18that we think we need to be happy.
- 9:19But if we have Christ, we have all we need for joy And so, and
- 9:25then we wanna work with joy.
- 9:28And the joy of the Lord is our strength.
- 9:31The joy of the Lord is ours in the Holy Spirit And if we aren't feeling it, it's
- 9:40because our sin is cutting us off from it.
- 9:42And so we need to ask the Holy Spirit to convict us of our sin and then
- 9:47repent of it so that we can rejoice.
- 9:52And a part of rejoicing is going forth and doing the good work that God has
- 9:56created a- and has set before us to walk in, and we just keep doing that on repeat.
- 10:03This is the life of sanctification that God has given us.
- 10:09And sometimes the good work is just doing the laundry and making dinner,
- 10:15and we would like something grander than that, but that's what the day is about.
- 10:24And so can we contentedly do that And then can we humbly,
- 10:30you know, let our husbands know?
- 10:32Like, I will sometimes just point out what I did.
- 10:37'Cause like I'm not expecting my husband to just notice on his own.
- 10:43It's actually, isn't, isn't it better if he doesn't notice?
- 10:47Because that means it's like normal, and so he doesn't notice or remark
- 10:52upon it 'cause it's actually normal.
- 10:54So, you know, I'll just be kind of childlike sometimes and say, "Ta-da,"
- 11:02and be silly and, you know, invite that recognition that I was hoping for.
- 11:10But you know, it is kind of a childlike, silly need and, but if
- 11:16I would like some, I can ask for it in the spirit that it really is in.
- 11:24And but that takes humility, you know, not being self-serious or feeling
- 11:30self-pity and, and acknowledging like, "Yeah, this is, you know, what I feel
- 11:36I need right now, and I'm just going to ask for, I'm just gonna ask for a hug."
- 11:41I'm not gonna pout my way into hoping he recognizes I need a hug.
- 11:45I can just ask for one.
- 11:49And if I ask, he's gonna give me one.
- 11:51I, you know?
- 11:53But I could get all in my head and do a little pouty face or whatever
- 11:59hoping to make it clear what I need and have him give it to me.
- 12:03And then when he doesn't, I start spinning an interpretation story
- 12:07about what that must mean that is completely false And unkind.
- 12:15And really, it's in my own head and heart, slander against my husband
- 12:21or my children or whatever, because I'm, I'm fishing for something, not
- 12:27getting it, and making that mean something that it doesn't mean at all.
- 12:32And all of this can just be spinning in our heads.
- 12:35You know, the more hormonal, the more it spins.
- 12:39And we just have to recognize that and cut to the chase and be willing
- 12:46to be honest with ourselves, and then with the people around us.
- 12:52And ask for the hug and take it.
- 12:56Or ask for a pat on the back and take it.
- 13:04And, um, and not spin things up into meaning more than they really mean
- 13:12Sarah says, "When I was a child, I saw this martyr from others, and
- 13:16then as a young wife, I had to tell myself that it was not allowed.
- 13:20I could do the job or not, but I couldn't blame someone else
- 13:23for not noticing and doing it."
- 13:25Right?
- 13:25It's like, why didn't so and so, you know, clear the table or whatever?
- 13:30And it's like, sure, maybe they should have.
- 13:32But if you noticed, you could take care of it or you could bring it up.
- 13:37Um, you know?
- 13:40We don't need to make things mean something that they might not
- 13:46Yes.
- 13:47Juliana says, "If I'm setting up requirements, I find I never end up
- 13:50content because no one is perfect enough.
- 13:53It's a dangerous trap."
- 13:55Yes Singing.
- 13:58Singing is a huge help for our attitudes and our mindset and
- 14:04walking in that joy of the Lord.
- 14:06Yes.
- 14:08Constantly telling my kids to just ask because I'm not a mind reader, and it's a
- 14:12good reminder that I need to just ask too.
- 14:16Yes
- 14:17So when you feel like you're doing a lot for other people and no one's appreciating
- 14:25the work that you do, try asking what other people are doing for you that you're
- 14:31not appreciating, and turn it around.
- 14:34Like, if you want the thanks and the appreciation, the notice of
- 14:41someone else, flip it around and give appreciation and notice and gratitude
- 14:49to God and to the people around you.
- 14:52He who waters will himself be watered.
- 14:55And usually what we are wanting from other people is actually what
- 15:00we ourselves need to be giving
- 15:03And it will totally, it will get you out of yourself to notice and appreciate
- 15:08other people And, um It changes our perspective, it gets us out of ourselves,
- 15:16and can really lift our attitude
- 15:20That's right.
- 15:20Megan says, "I have to remind myself, love and serve like Jesus.
- 15:24He probably didn't get recognition either."
- 15:27Right?
- 15:27The more he did, the more people wanted
- 15:30So we're gonna keep organizing our attitudes.
- 15:34I hope that you've made some alignment cards and you're reviewing those, and
- 15:39you're noticing these sad pity party stories that you're telling yourself.
- 15:44And we're gonna practice flipping the script, replacing it with truth, replacing
- 15:51it with living out the gratitude, and it makes all the difference.
- 16:00So thank you for joining me today.
- 16:03We will keep repenting, rejoicing, repeating.
- 16:06We have one more Monday live like this, and, uh, we'll continue to have
- 16:12content, new episodes coming out Tuesday through Friday for the next two weeks.
- 16:20And, um, I would really appreciate it if you would share those episodes.
- 16:24You can share the links through YouTube or whatever podcast
- 16:29app you're listening through.
- 16:31Um, and we'll keep organizing our attitudes this October.
- 16:36So thanks for joining me, everyone.
