Transcript
- 0:00Chapter 16 from the book of Jeremiah.
- 0:04Let's pray, dear God, as it says in Second Timothy 3 verse 16.
- 0:11All Scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching,
- 0:15rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness so
- 0:19that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every
- 0:23good work. Please let our minds be opened
- 0:26as we read through this chapter. We ask this in Jesus name.
- 0:32This chapter is called the Day of Disaster.
- 0:36Then the word of the Lord came to me.
- 0:39You must not marry and have sons or daughters in this place.
- 0:44For this is what the Lord says about the sons and daughters
- 0:47born in this land, and about the women who are their mothers and
- 0:50the men who are their fathers. They will die of deadly
- 0:55diseases. They will not be mourned or
- 0:58buried, but will be like dung lying on the ground.
- 1:02They will perish by sword and famine, and their dead bodies
- 1:06will become food for the birds and the wild animals.
- 1:10So the study Bible says, why couldn't Jeremiah get married?
- 1:14A marriage relationship could have distracted Jeremiah from
- 1:18his ministry. Or perhaps God was saving
- 1:22Jeremiah from overwhelming heartbreak.
- 1:25The next generation of children would be devastated by disease,
- 1:29war, and famine. Continuing on in Scripture Or
- 1:35Alvare, Was it unusual to stay single?
- 1:39Celibacy was extremely rare in that culture.
- 1:42Family life and having children provided not only a retirement
- 1:46plan in quotations, but also the means to preserve one's name.
- 1:53Therefore, the animosity of Jeremiah's foes was revealed
- 1:58when they said, let us cut him off from the land of the living,
- 2:02that his name be remembered no more.
- 2:05By remaining single with no heirs to carry on his name,
- 2:10Jeremiah showed trust in God and submission to God's will.
- 2:16So verse 5 says, For this is what the Lord says, do not enter
- 2:20a house where there is a funeral meal.
- 2:23Do not go to mourn or show sympathy, because I have
- 2:27withdrawn my blessing, my love and my pity from this people,
- 2:31declares the Lord. Both high and low will die in
- 2:36this land. They will not be buried or
- 2:38mourned, and no one will cut themselves or shave their head
- 2:43for the dead. No one will offer food to
- 2:46comfort those who mourn for the dead, not even for a father or a
- 2:51mother. Nor will anyone give them a
- 2:53drink to console them. And do not enter a house where
- 2:57there is feasting and sit down to eat and drink.
- 3:00For this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel says
- 3:04before your eyes, and in your days I will bring an end to the
- 3:10sounds of joy and gladness and to the voices of the bride and
- 3:15Bridegroom in this place. When you, when you tell these
- 3:20people all this, and they ask you, why has the Lord decreed
- 3:24such great disaster against us? What wrong have we done?
- 3:28What sin have we committed against the Lord our God?
- 3:31Then say to them, It is because your ancestors forsook me,
- 3:36declares the Lord, and followed other gods and served and
- 3:41worshipped them. They forsook me and did not keep
- 3:44my law. But you have behaved more
- 3:48wickedly than your ancestors. See how all of you are following
- 3:54the stubbornness of your evil hearts instead of obeying Me.
- 3:59This is something that we can probably learn from because a
- 4:03lot of times people will say we'll just follow your heart,
- 4:06but we'll see in this in this chapter, in the next chapter
- 4:11that our hearts are not what we should follow.
- 4:15And and this is again, it says in this verse 12, it says, but
- 4:23you have behaved more wickedly than your ancestors.
- 4:26See how all of you are following the stubbornness of your evil
- 4:32hearts instead of obeying me. So we can see that there's a a
- 4:40conflict, a conflict of interest where the evil heart does not
- 4:44want to obey God. So it continues.
- 4:48So I will throw you out of this land, into a land neither you
- 4:53nor your ancestors have known, and there you will serve other
- 4:56gods day and night, for I will show you no favour.
- 5:01However, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when it will
- 5:05no longer be said as surely as the Lord lives who brought the
- 5:09Israelites up out of Egypt, But it will be said as surely as the
- 5:13Lord lives, who brought the Israelites up out of the land of
- 5:17the north, and out of all the countries where He had banished
- 5:21them. For I will restore them to the
- 5:24land I gave their ancestors. So here God is talking about how
- 5:30he's going to do this future restoration that hasn't happened
- 5:34yet because he it says I will restore them to the land I gave
- 5:39their ancestors. Like Gaza is part of that land
- 5:43and Israel does not have Gaza and it extends.
- 5:49I forgot what chapter it is where it gives all the
- 5:53boundaries of the land. The land that God promised the
- 5:57Israelites is lot larger than what they currently have.
- 6:01It also includes the West Bank area that is also a highly
- 6:06contested area but that's found in scripture.
- 6:09And anyway, this is so this is talking about the day when Jesus
- 6:14returns actually when the land will be restored back to them,
- 6:19because it says that he will bring the Israelites out of the
- 6:22land of the north and out of all the countries where he had
- 6:26banished them. And so all of the Israelites
- 6:29will be returning back to Israel and out of the north.
- 6:35There's a couple of different places in Bible prophecy that
- 6:38also talks about when Jesus returns and he comes from the
- 6:41land of the north and he's setting the captives free and he
- 6:46has blood on his garments. And so there's there's yeah,
- 6:50there's additional information in the Bible that talks about
- 6:56this. I'll continue on with Jeremiah.
- 7:00But now I will send for many fishermen, declares the Lord,
- 7:03and they will catch them. After that I will send for many
- 7:07hunters, and they will hunt them down every mountain and hill
- 7:10from the crevices of the rocks. My eyes are on all their ways.
- 7:15They are not hidden from me, nor is their sin concealed from my
- 7:20eyes. I will repay them double for
- 7:23their wickedness and their sin, because they have defiled my
- 7:27land with lifeless forms of their vile images and have
- 7:32filled my inheritance with their detestable idols.
- 7:37Lord, my strength and my fortress my refuge in times of
- 7:41distress to you. The nations will come from the
- 7:45ends of the earth and say our ancestors possessed nothing but
- 7:49false gods, worthless idols that did them no good.
- 7:53Do people make their own gods? Yes, but they are not gods.
- 7:57Therefore, I will teach them this time.
- 8:00I will teach them my power and might.
- 8:04Then they will know that my name is the Lord.
- 8:09And that's the end of chapter 16.
- 8:12I'll read a few of the questions and answers for this chapter.
- 8:17Why would anyone cut himself or shave his head?
- 8:21While people today might show grief by dressing in black, the
- 8:24people in the ancient Near East expressed deep sorrow in other
- 8:28ways. One way was to shave the head.
- 8:31Since a man's hair and beard signified his maturity and
- 8:35dignity, shaving them suggested humility and great loss, cutting
- 8:41oneself an expression of grief. Grief practiced by paid pagans
- 8:46was forbidden by the law, and that's found in Leviticus 19.
- 8:51But some people in Judah had adopted this Pagan custom.
- 8:55In this case, however, there would be no grieving, mourning,
- 8:58or burials. Why were the people so naive?
- 9:02Influenced by false prophets? Over time, the people had
- 9:06gradually become indifferent to their sin.
- 9:09Unaffected by the gravity of their sin, they could not see
- 9:13that their wickedness was the root cause of their troubles.
- 9:17Why restore unfaithful people until the final judgment?
- 9:22God's punishment is an act of discipline, a means to bring
- 9:27people to a place of repentance and blessing.
- 9:32Though judgment was inescapable, God planned to bring a remnant
- 9:39out of captivity and back to Judah.
- 9:42God remained faithful to His covenant with Abraham from
- 9:46Genesis chapter 12, even though the people had been unfaithful.
- 9:52And that's the end of Chapter 16.
