- 0:09Oh, hi, it's you. I'm so glad to see you.

- 0:27Have you just been watching Bear in the Big Blue House VHS tapes
- 0:32downstairs in the basement? Because you smell like you've
- 0:39been watching Bear in the Big Blue House VHS tapes.
- 0:53Because you. Now you should just use that
- 0:56tape. Just do it.
- 0:59Just go. Just go.
- 0:59It's. Fine, or maybe you just smell
- 1:02this good all the time. Hi, welcome to Bear in the Big
- 1:05Blue podcast. A Hi, welcome to bear in Oh God,
- 1:11I'm Jadzia Dax. Save me now.
- 1:15But hi, welcome to Bear in the Big Blue podcast brought to you
- 1:22by toughpigs.com. This is the podcast where a
- 1:26lifelong Bear in the Big Blue House fan Me Becca Petunia is
- 1:30joined by. Me, Joe Hennes, who's watching
- 1:33Bear in the Big Blue House for the very.
- 1:35First time the Berry first time. I don't get it.
- 1:40The winter Berry first time. There it is.
- 1:43So we've been watching through the show because again, I'm a
- 1:48huge fan of Bear Joe is watching for the first time, and also
- 1:53we've got to get ready for our long winter's nap and for the
- 1:56feast of the Winter Berry. And well, we've come to the end
- 2:02of another one because, folks, this is the last episode of this
- 2:06little mini series of Bear in the Big Blue podcast, because we
- 2:12are talking about a Barry Bare Christmas Part 1 and 2, which
- 2:19are episodes 325 and 326. And joining us, uh oh, I'm
- 2:27getting that feeling again. Yeah, it's an itchin, a
- 2:31scritchin, a twitchin, a scratchin.
- 2:35It's time for Anthony Strand of toughpigs.com.
- 2:40Oh, la, la, we're doing the very cha, cha cha.
- 2:45I'm so excited. Hi, Becca.
- 2:46Hi, Joe. You got to do the Anthony Cha
- 2:49cha cha, Yeah. The Anthony Cha Cha Cha is just
- 2:52to like, move my head back and forth like this.
- 2:54Yeah, that's your, yeah, that's your signature move.
- 2:56You're always, you're always doing that.
- 2:58I'm always doing it. You have no idea.
- 3:00I'm so glad you could join us from your VHS tape basement
- 3:04because I got to tell everybody if you don't know the downstairs
- 3:09Muppet Babies, this joke which has shown up occasionally on
- 3:13Tough Pigs things definitely on Moving Right Along, which
- 3:18Anthony who hosts Moving Right Along.
- 3:20Why our pal Ryan Rowe and myself.
- 3:23That's true, Co hosts. Moving right along, but.
- 3:27Anthony Anthony loves watching VHS tapes in the basement with
- 3:31his family and Anthony owns a Berry Bare Christmas on VHS
- 3:36tape. You own the only the last
- 3:39surviving copy. Wait, I'm going to go grab it.
- 3:41I should have it with me. I'm going to go show you guys.
- 3:43This is really important that you have the prop in your.
- 3:45Hands. For a podcast, yeah, everyone
- 3:47can tell whether or not. Here's a prop.
- 3:50Here's a prop I have of Rizzo. Here's a broken gem in the
- 3:56Holograms Christmas ornament that I've been meaning to glue
- 4:00back together, but it's been a little tricky so it's just
- 4:03sitting on my desk and I figured out.
- 4:05Here's a pin that I bought for Sarah that says Charisma,
- 4:08Uniqueness, Nerve, and Talent. That's pretty good.
- 4:11I don't know if we can say that on a podcast though.
- 4:13To say what? Don't worry about it, you'll
- 4:15hear it when you listen to the final episode.
- 4:18OK, here's my tape of Bear in the Big Blue House, a Berry Bear
- 4:22Christmas parts 1 and 2. Can't confirm that it's what
- 4:26Anthony is holding in his hand. Which I watched earlier today.
- 4:29And here's what's weird about this tape, if I can get real in
- 4:33the weeds. This thing was recorded in SLP
- 4:36mode, which is like the version where you could record 6 hours
- 4:40on a tape so it looked like mud. This is a professionally
- 4:43released tape that is instead of SP like you would expect.
- 4:47It's SLP or EP mode and it looks on a 70 inch TV hooked VCR
- 4:53hooked up to it. Who, buddy?
- 4:56It does not. Look great?
- 4:57Let me tell. You guys.
- 4:59So folks at home, if you don't know, Episode 325 of Barry Bear
- 5:05Christmas is on Disney Plus. Episode 326 of Barry Bear
- 5:11Christmas Part 2 is not on Disney Plus.
- 5:15It's actually, it's actually called a Barry Bear Christmas
- 5:18Foley Adu. We're a little.
- 5:22We're a little, you know, you know, earlier we released the
- 5:26first episode and someone said that I was bringing Tough Pigs
- 5:29podcasts to a new height. And I think today is the day I
- 5:32bring Tough Pigs podcasts to a new low.
- 5:35That's that's what happens when you invite the Strand Man on I.
- 5:39Didn't even fully introduce you, but we're getting into VHS talk
- 5:43because right now in my house I only have two VHS tapes.
- 5:49One is more Muppets Please and the other is a copy of Kermit
- 5:54Swamp Years on VHS that Dave gave me.
- 5:58Kermit Swamp Years Prep might have some of the same previews
- 6:01as this because this is 2002 and it's Columbia Tristar.
- 6:05Well, I'm sure Becca would check her VHS copy, but it's probably
- 6:08holding up a table just at the perfect level right now, you
- 6:11know? No, no, no, no it is.
- 6:13It is prominently displayed on one of the shelves in my office.
- 6:18But I don't own Bear in the Big Blue House.
- 6:21Barry Bear. Boy, is everybody enjoying this
- 6:23episode yet? I don't own Bear in the Big Blue
- 6:27House, A Barry Bear Christmas on VHS, so we had to watch Part 2
- 6:31on Internet Archive. And some of the things on
- 6:36Internet Archive, especially those uploaded by our friend
- 6:39Garrett Gilchrist, are uploaded beautifully restored.
- 6:44You know these gorgeous, gorgeous things.
- 6:46I know he just finished a different version of John Denver
- 6:49and The Muppets of Christmas together.
- 6:51That's restored better than ever before.
- 6:55Barry Bear Christmas was not that.
- 6:59It was a muddy recording from Playhouse Disney.
- 7:02They advertise Roly Polyoli at the end.
- 7:05Imagine a world where everything is round and robotic.
- 7:08And I was like, yes, I was 6 at the time.
- 7:11I could imagine that world. Do you want to know what
- 7:15previews are on the tape? Anthony, let me introduce you
- 7:18first. So Anthony is a long time pal of
- 7:21tough pigs. Like Anthony said, Anthony hosts
- 7:25the Moving Right Along podcast for toughpigs.com.
- 7:29And Anthony, before you tell me the VHS previews that I might
- 7:33see if I watch Gav's copy of Kermit's Swamp Years, why don't
- 7:39you, Why don't you tell us about your history with Bear in the
- 7:42Big Blue House? Because, much like Joe, you were
- 7:45older than six years old when the show premiered.
- 7:49Yes, but I'm, I'm a few years younger than Joe, so I was about
- 7:5312 1/2 when the show premiered. I was starting 7th grade, right.
- 7:58It's fall 97. Yeah.
- 8:00Yeah. So I'm starting 7th grade, and I
- 8:02didn't really start watching it until probably the next school
- 8:06year. I think.
- 8:07I feel like it had been on for a little while.
- 8:09I have a brother who's five years younger than me, so he's
- 8:12like 8 at this time. And he really loved the show,
- 8:17which was my excuse to watch it, you know, But the thing about me
- 8:22is that, like on your first episode, Joe, you were talking
- 8:24about how there's that age where you're like, too cool for
- 8:27Muppets. And for me at least, eighth
- 8:30grade was not yet that age because I was, I was trying so
- 8:36hard to love every Muppet thing still, you know, this was this
- 8:40was the age where I'm like, Muppets tonight is the greatest
- 8:42TV show ever made. And Ben, the Blue House, I
- 8:46watched it. I loved it.
- 8:47My brother and I watched it all the time.
- 8:50I know you talked about the toilet tears episode when you've
- 8:54got to go on a previous episode. And when my when my nephew Ollie
- 9:00was starting to be potty trained, my brother Benjamin was
- 9:03like, I can't believe that I'm pulling up this episode to to
- 9:06show it to him, you know, like my son.
- 9:09Quick question, your nephew Ollie.
- 9:12Yeah. Round and robotic no.
- 9:16He is, he is round. He has a big old noggin, but he
- 9:20it's spelled differently. It's Ole, it's not OL i.e.
- 9:23Like rolling polyol, a connection I've never made and I
- 9:27if I had to. Guess I wouldn't.
- 9:28I promise you I wouldn't have made it if I hadn't just made a
- 9:31joke about rolling polyoli. Right.
- 9:34But anyways, when I was a freshman in high school, we had
- 9:36to do a persuasive speech on a topic, and I chose why You
- 9:40should watch Bear in the Big Blue House as my persuasive
- 9:44speech topic. And I delivered this to a room
- 9:46full of my peers. So that's what I was like.
- 9:49Did you, did you successfully indoctrinate any of them?
- 9:54I mean my my friend Jason already liked it.
- 9:57But that's not what I'm talking about.
- 9:58I'm talking about like, were you, were you so good at
- 10:00persuasive speaking that there was one kid in there who was
- 10:03like, wow, I gotta go check. This out Anthony is like Anthony
- 10:07is like the Purple Man, but only for bear in the Big Blue house.
- 10:12So you might call him the Purple Otter.
- 10:17I don't know what the purple man is.
- 10:20That's David Tennant's character in Jessica Jones.
- 10:23TV show I've never seen. Yeah, yeah.
- 10:24I mean. Yeah, I saw the.
- 10:26I read the. He's also.
- 10:27No, I did. I read, I read Alias the I read
- 10:30the original run of Alias, but he's only in that last arc, I
- 10:33don't think. Yeah, I don't think about him
- 10:34when I think about that comic. It's like Case of the Week
- 10:39stuff. That's.
- 10:40What this podcast? Is about I didn't watch the show
- 10:42because I heard it. They didn't do cases of the
- 10:44week. I don't want to watch a show
- 10:45about a detective where she doesn't solve cases.
- 10:47All right. Would well, how would you feel
- 10:49if Bear and the Big Blue House solved a case every week?
- 10:52Bear the Big Blue House is very episodic.
- 10:55No, I'm saying what if he was literally a detective?
- 10:57Bear does solve cases every week.
- 10:59It's like what if? What if the big.
- 11:01Blue House was in the the little town from the murder, She wrote.
- 11:05That'll be good, I would watch that.
- 11:07I can't believe we started the season so good.
- 11:12You want me to leave and you guys can just do this without?
- 11:14Me. No, absolutely not.
- 11:16Absolutely. Not the The other thing I was
- 11:18going to say about my history with Bear in the Big Blue House
- 11:21is that I could only find an episode list online.
- 11:26I was a real episode guide head. I was my brother Derek used to
- 11:29make fun of me for printing episode guides out and putting
- 11:32them in binders, and I could only find an episode list for
- 11:36Bear. So I decided that I needed to
- 11:39write the episode guide myself. But the only way I knew how to,
- 11:43the only way I knew how to do this was that when an episode
- 11:46would come on, I would just like write a description.
- 11:51And so I, I got through like 10 of them because it was just
- 11:54like, that's not feasible when you're in school, you know?
- 11:58Right. Yeah, I couldn't.
- 11:59That's, that's fascinating. Yeah.
- 12:01That's like, that's like what Danny, that's like what Danny
- 12:03Horn was doing on in Muppetzine back in the 90s where it was
- 12:07like in those like basically setting the stage for what the
- 12:10Muppet Wiki would be and just saying like, I don't know, no
- 12:12one's ever like written this down before.
- 12:14So I guess I should watch these episodes of these TV shows and
- 12:18like list them out in. Order of production.
- 12:21Right. We talked about we talked about
- 12:24how bear information was so hard to come by on the Internet at
- 12:29this time that this was how I found tough pigs in the first
- 12:33place. Was searching.
- 12:35Was searching for bear information and Danny happened
- 12:38to be writing a lot of a lot of bear articles at the time
- 12:42because it's what was on TV. Right.
- 12:45And then the the other part of my history with Bear that I
- 12:48applies to this episode is that we I bought the soundtrack.
- 12:53I bought bear in the big below holiday favorites on iTunes like
- 12:5615 years ago or more. And I have that burned on ACD
- 13:01with the Phineas and Ferb Christmas album.
- 13:06And we listen to this in the car all the time, every Christmas
- 13:09season many, many times. And so the the soundtrack to
- 13:13this plus like a few Thanksgiving songs, Halloween
- 13:15songs. That's my kids primary
- 13:17experience with Bear in the Big Blue house.
- 13:19Like for sure, you know? This is a great soundtrack like
- 13:24it is I never owned. I owned the other two Bear
- 13:29soundtracks because there was Songs from Bear and the Big Blue
- 13:32House which I had on cassette. We have that one too.
- 13:35It's. Still on cassette in in in my
- 13:39office. It's right by Sidek.
- 13:42Yeah, while you're pointing at Sidek, he's different.
- 13:47Yeah, there's a giant side up behind me.
- 13:50That's just the way that I live my life.
- 13:53But. And I owned the second one,
- 13:56which was more songs from Bear in the Big Blue House.
- 13:58But I never owned this one. And after watching it today, I
- 14:03got to, I got to find myself a copy of Bear's Holiday
- 14:06Celebration from Jim Henson's Bear in the Big Blue House. 20
- 14:11favorite Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas songs.
- 14:16What a catchy title. Really pithy.
- 14:21I I'll be I'll warn you a few of them are just about snow.
- 14:25Yeah, I'm looking right now at the track list.
- 14:27They also have some of the ones that are just about bats, which
- 14:30is not. I'm Benny the Bat and I like it
- 14:34like that, yet rules. Yeah.
- 14:38Jim Krupa isn't it, I think. It is.
- 14:39Jim Krupa does play Benny the Bat.
- 14:41He played Batley, didn't he? I believe he did.
- 14:44Yeah, it's all, it's all bats all the time at the Krupa house.
- 14:47Anyway, so Anthony, before we get into talking about a Barry
- 14:52Bear Christmas Part 1 and 2 and just kind of again our thoughts
- 14:57on it. We don't really go play by play
- 14:59scene by scene in this podcast. We talk about our thoughts
- 15:03overall, but this is basically just one episode.
- 15:07So I think it's a lot easier to even just go play by play a
- 15:11little more for. But Anthony, why don't you tell
- 15:14us what previews come before this on your SLPVHS tape of Bear
- 15:20in the Big Blue House? A Barry Bear Christmas Part 1
- 15:23and 2. All right, so there were three
- 15:25previews. First one is Thomas and the
- 15:29Magic Railroad, the Thomas the Tank Engine movie with Alec
- 15:33Baldwin as Mr. Conductor. Was that?
- 15:35Yeah, that one was the theatrical 1, correct.
- 15:37Theatrical movie. Mara Wilson's last film as a
- 15:40child actress and Jim Cummings narrates that trailer.
- 15:44So great to hear him as always. And then the second one is the
- 15:49Trumpet of the Swan. Animated movie like the EB White
- 15:52novel. I didn't know that existed.
- 15:55I have never. And I was a kid at this point.
- 15:58Right. I've never heard of it outside
- 16:00of this VHS team. It is like the only, but it
- 16:02here's the thing. At the start, it says with the
- 16:05voices of Jason Alexander, Reese Witherspoon, Mary Mary
- 16:11Steenburgen, Seth Green with Carol Burnett and Joe Mantagna,
- 16:16and music by Little Richard. So do you think that this is
- 16:22like a grindhouse situation where they're like giving you
- 16:24fake trailers with the hopes that maybe someday they'll make
- 16:27real movies out of them? I mean, it might be.
- 16:30I hope so. Does it mean a machete?
- 16:33EB White's Trumpet of the Swan, we we like.
- 16:36That's what they were hoping for.
- 16:37That was their number one wish list.
- 16:39This is this is like a real machete situation, right?
- 16:42Or or. Or.
- 16:43Hobo with a shotgun? Right.
- 16:46Or Thanksgiving isn't that? Wasn't that one of them?
- 16:48And. That's yeah.
- 16:49Thanksgiving. Yeah, Yeah.
- 16:51But it says it's. Wikipedia says it's directed by
- 16:54Richard Rich, who directed the Swan Princess.
- 16:56So he's just a swan boy. Wasn't Richard Rich the guy who
- 17:02was? He had his family's fortune
- 17:04hidden in the Mount Rushmore. Yes.
- 17:07Yeah, Richard Rich had like a McDonald's inside his house.
- 17:11He did. He had.
- 17:11That's what. He did on McDonald's and.
- 17:14His Butler doesn't know that the runs in baseball are called the
- 17:17runs because he asked him how many points he scored.
- 17:19That's the main thing I remember from the Richie Rich movie.
- 17:22I think each of us just said the one thing we remember.
- 17:24Well. I, I, I also remember that
- 17:27Macaulay was getting old. So all the adults are like 6
- 17:30foot five. It's John Larroquette, Edward
- 17:32Herman, and they're all, they're all so tall.
- 17:38What's the third trailer, Anthony?
- 17:41The third trailer is the PBS cartoon Dragon Tales.
- 17:45Great. There you go.
- 17:46Yep. A Sesame Workshop joint?
- 17:51Absolutely. Yeah.
- 17:54Connection to nothing with that we usually talk about on these
- 17:57podcasts. Yeah, and and that's why Zach
- 18:01and Weezy are just as important to the Henson legacy as Baron
- 18:06the Big Blue House. Anyway, the point is, I have
- 18:13mixed feelings about this holiday special, but honestly,
- 18:18those mixed feelings are basically 90% positive.
- 18:23And I think, and I've written about this on toughpigs.com, I
- 18:27think the entire first half is perfect.
- 18:31I think the entire first half is one of the best Muppet Christmas
- 18:37things. I think it's very sweet, it's
- 18:39very cute, it has a great message, the music is really
- 18:42good, There's some good jokes in it.
- 18:46I find the second-half. What makes the second-half not
- 18:51perfect to me is that it is a lot worse than the first half.
- 18:57Sure. Like I feel like I would like it
- 19:00more if I didn't have the first half to compare it to.
- 19:04Can you? Can you use better words to
- 19:07explain what was not as good about it in your opinion?
- 19:11You expect me to use better words?
- 19:13Me, a writer and podcaster? You want me to describe
- 19:18something? Yes, I liked it because it was
- 19:22good. I didn't like that one because
- 19:23it was less good. Look, I I already work in an
- 19:26elementary school. OK, So I think my point is like,
- 19:34I feel like, and what I wrote in this article on toughpigs.com is
- 19:38that I feel like the first episode tells a complete story.
- 19:43And I think the second episode adds a conclusion to that story
- 19:49that you don't necessarily need and trades in a lot of the the
- 19:55warmth and heart of the first half for a lot of silliness that
- 19:59I don't think. Fits as well with the the, the
- 20:04sort of vibes I would expect from a bear holiday special.
- 20:09But also it's fun and all of my friends are there.
- 20:13So I don't have a, you know, I don't think it's awful, but I
- 20:18just feel like you can watch episode 325 on its own and it
- 20:23would still be a really good Christmas special.
- 20:26Whereas if you watched episode 326 on its own, it would be a
- 20:30fine Christmas special. So I I kind of want to bounce
- 20:35off that a little bit because the big thing that I took from
- 20:39this two-part special is I was thinking about the way that the
- 20:43whole thing wrapped up at the end and I'm jumping straight to
- 20:44the end of this thing here. But when bears kind of giving
- 20:47his summary of of what happened to Luna, he talks mostly about
- 20:53like, oh, well, it's really great that there's all these
- 20:55different types of animals that are in this house.
- 20:57We can all get together. Wouldn't it be nice if we could
- 20:58all end war with that concept in Fraggle rock style, You know,
- 21:03and I was thinking that isn't what this was about at all.
- 21:07And not that it's bad that he made that comment, but it made
- 21:09me think, well, what was this about?
- 21:11Well, OK, it was a little bit about a homeless dog.
- 21:13It was a little bit about everyone who wants a presents
- 21:15and doesn't know how to gift it gives something to bear.
- 21:18And there's all these little subplots that none of them
- 21:21really were like, fleshed out enough to make a whole story.
- 21:24And The funny thing about that is like, I might be complaining
- 21:26about that now, but it's the thing that I love most about
- 21:29Muppet Family Christmas, which is a, as we all, I think would
- 21:32agree, a perfect Christmas special.
- 21:35It's the. It's the greatest thing The
- 21:36Muppets have ever made. Yes, right.
- 21:38Yeah. I mean, it's, it's certainly, I
- 21:39think it. Goes for me, I think.
- 21:41I think it goes, Elmo says Boo. Rats of the Lost Nebula.
- 21:46Muppet Family Christmas. And then dragon tails.
- 21:52You would you would Becca, I'm I'm going to remind you, you and
- 21:57I wrote a review of the first 3 episodes of Brats of the Lost
- 22:00Nebula and we both hated it. And you've never finished the
- 22:05series. I sure haven't.
- 22:07Like I mean. Y'all you got to do a podcast
- 22:12about that to finish it up anyway.
- 22:14I'm never watching. That show again.
- 22:15Yeah, don't do that. No one will listen to that.
- 22:16No one would listen to that now. But but, yeah, but my point
- 22:19really here is like, I felt like they didn't commit enough to any
- 22:24of these storylines to really get me, you know, like, really
- 22:29invested. And I think the storyline that
- 22:31did feel the most important, which is the one about the
- 22:34homeless dog, was wrapped up so quickly and in a way that, like,
- 22:38gotta do. I have questions, you know,
- 22:41like. Like I have so many questions
- 22:43about that homeless dog. But I feel.
- 22:45Like that's what I'm saying, because if you just look at
- 22:50episode 1, if you just look at the first half of this, it is a
- 22:56little more focused on the idea that the kids are being kind of
- 23:01selfish. They go to Santa Hog and I have
- 23:04so much to say about how much fun that Santa Hog sequence is,
- 23:08but they go to Santa Hog and Pip and Pop are like, we want 100
- 23:12clams. No 7 million clams, No 10.6
- 23:17billion clams or whatever it is they're saying.
- 23:19I loved that so much I can't even tell you.
- 23:22I had a big stupid grin on my face.
- 23:24That whole kettle. Thing.
- 23:25Like pip and pop? The kids are being selfish and
- 23:28then they meet shellfish, shellfish because they're asking
- 23:32for clams and Treelo is asking for but they the the kids are
- 23:39being selfish and then they meet someone who actually needs
- 23:43something like doesn't just want something, but like need
- 23:48something. They need Jack the dog.
- 23:50And it makes them realize how lucky they are to have each
- 23:54other and that the best thing that they can give someone is,
- 23:59you know, is a home, even temporarily.
- 24:03And I think that is a nice self-contained story that only
- 24:07becomes confusing when you start adding the other elements from
- 24:12the second episode. And I think that that's maybe
- 24:16once I I shook out my sillies, the more eloquent way of saying
- 24:20what I was trying to say before. Is it it really is.
- 24:24You know, I think by putting it just, you know, again, by just
- 24:30looking at the first half in a weird way, Disney Plus has given
- 24:34us a rare blessing because it does create a more cohesive
- 24:39thematic story in in that regard.
- 24:42And also, you don't have to figure out not to jump to the
- 24:45end, but you don't have to figure out what it means that
- 24:48Doctor Hogg has a dog house in his backyard.
- 24:53That's where he sleeps when Missus Hogg really gets angry at
- 24:57him. I mean pip and Pop live in a
- 24:59pond right? Like.
- 25:00Yeah, they do. This is fine.
- 25:02Some animals live outside and some animals live inside well.
- 25:05That's no, But I think, I think what Becca's saying is that Doc
- 25:08Hogg presumably lives in a house, but he has an unused
- 25:11doghouse. This is like for sale 1 doghouse
- 25:15never used, you know what I mean?
- 25:16Yeah, sure, sure. Yeah, it also does raise a lot
- 25:19of questions. Found it in his backyard.
- 25:22How big is Doc Hog's backyard? I mean, it's not that it's big,
- 25:25it's just messy. It's a stye.
- 25:28That's a stye. That's.
- 25:29True, I'll accept it. So can as long as Anthony.
- 25:32I want to hear your thoughts overall though on Barry Bare
- 25:36Christmas. So as I said up front, I hear
- 25:40the songs from this like dozens of times every single year.
- 25:44So I think of this as a soundtrack like way more this is
- 25:49this is me. I mean, I've probably seen this
- 25:505 or 6 times, but like, I don't watch it every year, you know?
- 25:54And so all of this, like my kids love the winter Berry because of
- 26:01the song. We have a big ornament that's
- 26:04like a big Raspberry looking thing.
- 26:06My kids call that the winter Berry.
- 26:08This was not something Roz and I invented.
- 26:10It was something the kids decided.
- 26:12Miles was running around yesterday, literally yesterday,
- 26:16carrying it. When we were decorating the tree
- 26:18yelling, I found the winter Berry.
- 26:21Wow, did you make a wish? No, because he doesn't know
- 26:24anything about that because it's not on the soundtrack like he's
- 26:27seen this. I'm sure they didn't watch it
- 26:29with me just now. You know, I watched it last
- 26:30night after they were in bed. And so to him, there's there's
- 26:34no pay off. There's no, like, the wish that
- 26:36they don't know that it ends with Jack the dog getting a
- 26:38house, you know? Sure.
- 26:40Yeah. So I think of this as more
- 26:43cohesive than Becca does, probably because I just think of
- 26:46it as 12 songs or, or whatever the amount is, you know, 10
- 26:48songs. And I'm watching it again.
- 26:51I certainly, I had, I had read your article not too long ago
- 26:54back and I certainly understand your point.
- 26:57But on the other hand, like for example, the, the the carols
- 27:01thing moment in this in which is in the second episode and I
- 27:05think is such a delight because it is just over a minute long.
- 27:10It is 64 seconds long and they do 5 songs.
- 27:15They pack in five weird little song parody Christmas carols,
- 27:19right O Come all ye otters eat some clams, whatever it is.
- 27:23And that's weird. Like it's a it's a strange thing
- 27:28for ATV show to do and it makes me so happy.
- 27:32But to me that's just one of those things.
- 27:33It's the same as the visit to Santa hog.
- 27:34It's all, it's all just part of the the episode, you know, So
- 27:38this. Is really making me like realize
- 27:40like more of the parallels between this month of family
- 27:42Christmas. I would love.
- 27:44Carol Sing I feel like I feel like this this is a this is a
- 27:46topic maybe we should we should turn into something else for the
- 27:48website. But but yeah, like, like, yeah,
- 27:52with all these different storylines and yeah.
- 27:55Do they both have extended Carol Sing characters?
- 27:59You have a familiar character, just as Santa Claus.
- 28:02Right. Which, by the way, Doc Hogs
- 28:05Santa Claus costume looks awesome.
- 28:08I think this is this is some of the best Doc Hog stuff as as
- 28:12Santa hog. He's so.
- 28:14So fun in that in that. I like him a lot.
- 28:17And you know, Anthony, I do want to be clear.
- 28:20Like, I'm not saying that I dislike the second episode.
- 28:23No again. No, no, no, no, you're, you're
- 28:25doing that thing that we all do. And when I say us, I mean like
- 28:28nerds where like you basically like a thing, but all you want
- 28:32to do is talk about the problems because it's bothering you that
- 28:34you don't love everything about it, right?
- 28:36Like I I do that all the time too.
- 28:37Like we all do, you know? But, and I've always said it's
- 28:40more fun to complain about something, so we do.
- 28:43Yeah. It's like, let's let's RIP it
- 28:44apart. Well, listen, the problem is
- 28:47that something is wrong with everything except the way I
- 28:51sing. If there's nothing wrong with
- 28:53me, there must be something wrong with the universe, all
- 28:57right? It's the children who are wrong.
- 29:02Though the other thing I wanted to say is we we're going to talk
- 29:05about Jack the dog, though we haven't said that it's Dave
- 29:08goals yet. Yeah.
- 29:09So. Yeah, which?
- 29:10Which, by the way, like using a voice I feel like I have never
- 29:13heard him do. Yeah, it's a, it's a new, new
- 29:15character, so. Incredible.
- 29:17It is. It is so it feels to me.
- 29:20And we were watching this, my spouse, former podcast guest Eli
- 29:26Lee, and my sister who will have to be on a Tough Pigs podcast
- 29:30eventually. We were just watching it
- 29:32together just before recording this, and Jack started talking
- 29:37and Eli turns to me and goes, well, that's someone, isn't it?
- 29:42Like that feels like someone important.
- 29:45And I was like, yeah, it's Dave Goles.
- 29:47It's gonzo. And what we realized is it's
- 29:51it's it's two things. First of all, the Dave Goles
- 29:53character it sounds the most like is the Elephant elevator
- 29:59operator from Sesame Street from a little before this on Sesame
- 30:04Street. But what it really is is it's
- 30:07Dave doing a Rolf impression. Oh yeah, yeah, I can see that.
- 30:12I can see that. It's like Dave's version of
- 30:14Rolf, if Dave was Rolf. It's a little bit gruff and laid
- 30:18back. Oh yeah, he says a lot of the
- 30:22house, I mean, and he makes a lot of the same.
- 30:24He has he has a joke about taking himself for a walk.
- 30:27I was just about to say he has a joke about taking himself for
- 30:30the walk. But I was going to say about
- 30:33Dave Bowles and being somebody important.
- 30:36A lot of time, like sitcoms do this all the time, right?
- 30:39They'll bring in like an old star of an old sitcom, right?
- 30:44Like Carroll O'Connor on Mad About You, or Carl Reiner on Mad
- 30:48About You, or Carol Burnett on Mad About You, right?
- 30:51I was. I was.
- 30:52Going to make the same joke about George and Leo.
- 30:58And you know, that's always exciting.
- 31:00And what I love about this is that this is absolutely the
- 31:03Muppet equivalent of that. Like this is this is all next
- 31:07generation performers, right? Nobody who worked on Barry the
- 31:10Baby Blue House worked on The Muppet Show.
- 31:12Nobody who worked on it worked on Fraggle Rock.
- 31:15And here's Dave Goals like a legend, one of the original 5
- 31:21Muppet Show performers showing up at the end of Season 3 to
- 31:26play a main guest character in the Christmas special.
- 31:30Yep. Yep, and it's it's what a
- 31:32delight. But the, the the asterisk in
- 31:35this is like for the key audience who wouldn't know?
- 31:40Like it's not even like, yeah, like not even like he's using
- 31:42like a bouncing honey do voice in a kit.
- 31:44Some kid at home is going to be like, that sounds familiar.
- 31:46It's like, like, even, you know, I'm mad about you.
- 31:49Someone might watch and be like, oh, that person kind of looks
- 31:51like someone from another show. Like, it gets you excited for
- 31:54some reason that you can't quite explain, but there's no reason
- 31:57except for nerds like us to go. That's Dave Goals.
- 32:00I think the reason is all these guys got to play with Dave.
- 32:03Goals for the Christmas special. Peter, Peter and Nolan,
- 32:06everybody, you know. Yeah.
- 32:08And I, I'm sure that was a thrill for for Dave and for
- 32:11them. But also, he had as, as Becca
- 32:14just mentioned, he'd been on Sesame Street a few years
- 32:16earlier. Dave is the only person who's in
- 32:19everything, you know. Oh, wow.
- 32:22He shows up for all the major Muppet.
- 32:24I mean, he's barely on Sesame Street, but like, he's in Elmo
- 32:26and Grouchland. And yeah, he did.
- 32:29Three whole Sesame Street things.
- 32:30That's enough to to get you on the list.
- 32:32Yeah, and now here he is in Bear the Big Blue House, because he's
- 32:34just a guy. He's in Dark Crystal Age of
- 32:36Resistance. Dave Bowles is a guy who shows
- 32:39up, you know? So so.
- 32:42Didn't see Frank Oz. Frank Oz was playing a Turkey in
- 32:47the Thanksgiving episode of Baron the Big Blue House.
- 32:50Now did ya? You.
- 32:51You. Didn't see Frank Oz on Fraggle
- 32:52Rock? Well, no, that's true.
- 32:54You know, You know. Like, wow.
- 32:58Oh, no. I had a thought and I think I
- 32:59lost it. Oh, my God.
- 33:00You're gonna have to edit this out now.
- 33:02Well, hi, Becca. In the future editing this
- 33:05episode. Oh, darn.
- 33:08I think I lost it. It was about Dave, though.
- 33:10Yeah, I was talking about Dave. I keep, I keep slouching and
- 33:13looking down because Rizzo's hand fell off and I'm trying to
- 33:16find oh. I was wondering what you were
- 33:17doing down there. Yeah, I'm sorry, Do you?
- 33:19Want to take a second to look for it?
- 33:20No, it's OK while. I think about what I was going
- 33:22to say about Dave goals. Well, I mean, if you're thinking
- 33:24then. I'll yeah, give me a second.
- 33:25I found it. Sure.
- 33:27It was very pithy, very interesting.
- 33:29Should probably. Do that back on talking.
- 33:31About him being and everything, talking and making a cameo
- 33:34appearance. Oh, I know what I was going to
- 33:38say. So remind me what year we think
- 33:43this was filmed in this episode 'cause I.
- 33:45Can I can literally tell you what year it was filmed in?
- 33:48It aired December 6th, 1999, so it definitely was filmed in 99.
- 33:55OK, so that kind of screws with my theory, But I was thinking
- 33:59about like, what were The Muppets doing at this point?
- 34:02Because Muppets tonight's was off the air.
- 34:05You know, I didn't know, like, where this kind of lands around
- 34:07Muppets from space, but it was very possible that they were
- 34:09just like, look, we know that The Muppets aren't doing
- 34:12anything. Dave doesn't work on Sesame
- 34:14Street. Like, he's probably just sitting
- 34:16at home and twiddling his thumbs.
- 34:17What if we just hired him? What if he just showed up and
- 34:21then, like, he does? Because, you know, if The
- 34:23Muppets aren't working, then Dave probably isn't working
- 34:26either. Right, right.
- 34:29But I no, you're right also as like, I don't know what I'm
- 34:36trying to say. I'm trying to segue into the
- 34:38topic of Jack the dog being a homeless dog, an unhoused dog.
- 34:44And I think that that's like a pretty heavy topic for the Bear
- 34:50in the Big Blue House Christmas special to tackle.
- 34:53And I think they handle it pretty well.
- 34:55I think they handle it really well.
- 34:57I mean, considering especially because it's not right.
- 35:01Well, obviously it's not going to be the most nuanced thing in
- 35:04the world, but I think it is very considering the show.
- 35:09The thing that really impressed me with the way they handled
- 35:12this is any other kids show would have had the character,
- 35:17the on house character coming on being like, oh, woe is me.
- 35:20And like, oh, I just, you know, if I could just get a home and,
- 35:24and like maybe they have a bindle and it would be very
- 35:27like, this is totally what people are like.
- 35:29Like Tutter. Tutter has a bindle.
- 35:31Oh tutter in his in his fan. Of his imagination.
- 35:34Big Blue House song, Yeah. Yes, yeah, exactly.
- 35:39But but for Jack, like he's like, no, no, no, I'm fine.
- 35:43No, no, no, I don't need anything.
- 35:44No, no, don't worry about me. And like, I feel like that's so
- 35:47much more realistic and like, yeah, it still tugs at your
- 35:52heartstrings, but it's not manipulative.
- 35:54I don't know. I just like it felt really fresh
- 35:58and and well thought out. And I feel like, I feel like
- 36:04also in today's society, not that this necessarily would be
- 36:08done on a kid show, but in today's society, I feel like
- 36:11it's so easy to vilify the unhoused population.
- 36:16And you see a lot of politicians doing that and stuff.
- 36:20And there's no sense that it's like Jack's fault, or even that
- 36:28necessarily. It was like, yes, sometimes this
- 36:30happens and Tutter's like it's not fair and Bear's like it
- 36:35isn't fair. Right.
- 36:37And Bear, they, they make, they go out of their way to give bear
- 36:39the line. They're still the same as you or
- 36:42me, you know, Which I think is great.
- 36:45Now, like, another interesting thing about this whole sequence
- 36:49is that moment right before Doc Hog shows up where Bear is just
- 36:54about to invite, like, another animal into his home
- 36:58permanently. And like, I know, yeah, like the
- 37:01otters and Ojo, like, they have their own homes or whatever, but
- 37:05they really don't. They they all everyone lives at
- 37:06the Blue House, let's be honest. And, like Bear, is their
- 37:09caretaker. Oh, absolutely, 100%.
- 37:12Yeah, yeah. And like Bear was about to be
- 37:14like another mouth to feed, OK, but you got to do it.
- 37:16And like he, he was willing to do it, which is very Bear, you
- 37:19know, Bear. Bear wouldn't, wouldn't think
- 37:21twice. And like I do, I find that
- 37:23really interesting that like it wasn't just like, oh Gee whiz,
- 37:25what are we going to do? Hope for a miracle?
- 37:27Good luck, buddy. Because like again, any other
- 37:29kid show would have done that. Yeah, right.
- 37:33He yeah. I don't know.
- 37:36It's just very, it's very well handled.
- 37:39Yeah. I don't know.
- 37:39I got nothing to add, but I I agree.
- 37:41I already said it. No.
- 37:42I think it's really good and, and again, I think it's also
- 37:45bold of them to tackle, tackle this in a Christmas episode.
- 37:50You know what I mean? Like I, I really, I really
- 37:54admire them for doing that. I agree, and let's see, we
- 38:01should probably. Can we talk about you mentioned
- 38:04Tutter's little newsboy cap and his his fantasy?
- 38:08His winter outfit is so cute. He's got the little Plaid scarf
- 38:12and hat and it's not like a winter hat.
- 38:15It's like it's like also like a newsboy hat.
- 38:17Maybe it's the same 1. I don't know.
- 38:18I couldn't tell because the fantasy is in black and white.
- 38:21But like, I think it's adorable and I just like Tutter and
- 38:25talking about Tutter. Muppets in winter wear Muppets
- 38:28in winter wear always goes. And you know what else is cute?
- 38:31You know what else is cute in this that we don't see as often?
- 38:34There's a scene where they're all sitting at the table
- 38:36drinking hot cocoa and they all have their little mugs glued to
- 38:39their hand. And that is so cute.
- 38:42Oh, Speaking of that, let's talk about this.
- 38:45When Pip and Pop find the winterberry and they climb on
- 38:49Jack's back and they grab it, how did they grab the
- 38:53winterberry? Like their arms aren't even arm
- 38:55rodded, you know, like they're just like wiggly pieces of felt.
- 38:59And yeah, it's whichever one's on top.
- 39:00I don't know if it's Pip or Pop. Like literally like grabs the
- 39:03Berry. And I don't know how they did
- 39:05that. And I have to assume that
- 39:06they're alive. Pip and Pop are alive, yeah.
- 39:10Yeah, OK. Well, you answered my question.
- 39:13Thank you. Now we we talked about Jack's
- 39:19homelessness being well handled, but can I ask you both the
- 39:21question and feel free to tell me that this is an inappropriate
- 39:25question, but I have wondered it for 25 years.
- 39:29I'm ready. I'm do they give do they give
- 39:32Shadow the Kwanzaa song because she's black?
- 39:35OK, so Joe, this is this is what we were talking about before and
- 39:40Anthony, this is the surprise shadow twist on Disney Plus.
- 39:48There is no shadow segment in Episode 325.
- 39:53Really interesting. Now here's the real question.
- 39:57Did they cut it because shadow is black?
- 40:00So by what I can find on Muppet Wiki, it seems that a shorter
- 40:06version of this episode aired on on Playhouse Disney at one point
- 40:13to fit into the regular time slot and they needed to cut down
- 40:20some things for time. And the thing that they cut was
- 40:26Bear hanging up the reindeer wreath that the kids make.
- 40:30Which what a great scene where Pip and Pop are like.
- 40:32We're going to put some tennis balls on this wreath in case the
- 40:35reindeer want to have fun. Yeah, that's me.
- 40:38I love they won't play reindeer games.
- 40:40Yeah, sure. Watch the movie Reindeer Games.
- 40:43But I love it. It also cuts the Kwanzaa song
- 40:48completely. So Joe has never seen or heard
- 40:53the Kwanzaa song because I didn't realize what I was
- 40:57missing. I vaguely remembered there being
- 41:00a Kwanzaa song but. So it's it's it's on that
- 41:03soundtrack, you know, so I, so I hear it every time both of them.
- 41:06She get in the second part, she gets the dreidel song too.
- 41:09Yeah, she gets the dreidel song, which.
- 41:11Also, yeah, OK, so I, I, I've mentioned this on podcast
- 41:14before. I grew up Jewish.
- 41:15I had a Jewish upbringing. I have never in my life heard
- 41:18the second verse of the Dreidel song.
- 41:21Wait, which second verse? So there's like I had a little
- 41:24dreidel made out of clay. There's that that one that.
- 41:26Everyone has a lovely body with legs so short and thin you've
- 41:30never heard that before. Never in my life have I heard
- 41:34that. Oh, they do that.
- 41:35The Bare Naked ladies do that on Bare Naked for the holidays.
- 41:39Well, I guess they're more Jewish than me.
- 41:40And as as you know, Anthony, I told you the story.
- 41:43I met one of the bare naked ladies at my Jewish summer camp.
- 41:46And it was Steven Page, I imagine.
- 41:49I probably I don't know which one's which.
- 41:50Sure it's. It's the they call him the fat
- 41:53one, but he lost a bunch of weight like 20 years ago.
- 41:56Whatever it was they were, they were both there.
- 41:58I only met one of them but they were both there at my like they
- 42:01did a little. It's the one who does it.
- 42:03It's been one week since it's that guy.
- 42:05OK, I I. Was not not not the guy who does
- 42:09hold. They could just see the hood
- 42:10when they can stop thinking. I was probably 11 or 12 years
- 42:12old, I really don't remember. OK, Hey, well, Joe, I want to
- 42:15show you something. I want to show you something.
- 42:18All right, show me something, Anthony, on a podcast.
- 42:20Not this. Wait, this is a commercial.
- 42:23Wait a SEC. I'm going to love editing this.
- 42:26I'm going to love editing all of this talk about which Barenaked
- 42:30lady from the band Barenaked Ladies.
- 42:34You knew who you invited. I did.
- 42:40It's OK. I do this.
- 42:40I do this to you when I'm on your show, so it's only fair.
- 42:43It's true. Well, you do it to Ryan because
- 42:45Ryan. That's where Ryan is the editor.
- 42:50Yeah. All right, Joe, I want to show
- 42:52you something. It's.
- 42:53Lovely, yes? Show me something.
- 43:00So there's one thing that's missing from that song, and
- 43:04that's the voice of Peter Lin's interrupting between every line
- 43:08to say something. It's it's true.
- 43:10And he does. In the episode he does.
- 43:11Does. He does.
- 43:13Yeah, yeah. Why turn it like Wanza?
- 43:19I don't remember, Yeah, I don't remember what it is because I'm
- 43:21so used to the soundtrack version.
- 43:23But but with the one that I love on that album that he do, they
- 43:26do leave him in, is the what do shadows do on Halloween?
- 43:30And in that one, there's a part where it's like tell stores by a
- 43:34campfire light. And then Peter Lynn says there
- 43:37once was a scarecrow who was the greatest scarecrow of all time.
- 43:41And this is like a thing that I annoy my kids by saying often.
- 43:47Like when they asked for a story at bedtime.
- 43:48No the. Ones was a.
- 43:49Scarecrow. Like when we were at the pumpkin
- 43:51patch and we saw a scarecrow. They'll be like there once was a
- 43:53scarecrow and Miles will just be like, it's not that one.
- 43:56He's not. The greatest.
- 44:00So listen, if we bring this show back next year for Halloween and
- 44:04Thanksgiving, we'll we'll watch that one and we'll watch the
- 44:07Thanksgiving episode, which features the greatest song about
- 44:13pilgrims ever recorded. Wow, High bar about songs about
- 44:17pilgrims. You know, I have a lot of
- 44:19favorites. But I think what's interesting
- 44:25about the Kwanzaa song is they definitely make it like Kwanzaa
- 44:29and Hanukkah are things that have to be taught, whereas
- 44:33Christmas is something everything everybody knows and I
- 44:38don't know. I mean, Bear also mentions
- 44:40Hanukkah and Kwanzaa in his introduction.
- 44:43Right. And which is a great song, I
- 44:44think a holiday for everyone. I love that.
- 44:47Yes, yes, yes, I think that's a great song too.
- 44:51And I don't know, I guess it's fine.
- 44:53I know you're also just doing a joke, but like, it definitely
- 44:57feels like, and Mary and I mean, and happy Hanukkah to you, Mr.
- 45:03Hooper, where it's like, we need to throw this in here.
- 45:06We know it's the right thing to do.
- 45:09But the thing that makes it better in this case is it's not
- 45:13just one reference. Like I, I feel like, and then,
- 45:16you know, we, we obviously make the Happy Hanukkah Mr. Hooper
- 45:18joke a lot because it's such a throwaway.
- 45:21But you know, even, you know, later things like I the first
- 45:24thing that came to mind was I think it's Elmo's World, Happy
- 45:29Holidays. Maybe that's like, OK, let's
- 45:32cutaway to baby bear and his family.
- 45:34OK, we're going to talk about the so there's a cutaway to just
- 45:38that one scene of baby bear teaching telly how to spin the
- 45:41dreidel and whatever. And it's like, OK, so they got
- 45:43their whole the whole segment, like it's more than just a happy
- 45:45holidays Mr. Hooper moment, but it's just one.
- 45:49And at least here in the bear special is we've got the song,
- 45:53we have the the reference at the beginning.
- 45:54I feel like there's one of the reference that maybe I I thought
- 45:57of and and missed by the way, I don't, I don't recall it off the
- 46:00top of my head, but it feels like like Hanukkah is present
- 46:03throughout this special, even if it's not about Hanukkah, the.
- 46:05Other. The other reference is that
- 46:08there are a lot of presents that are wrapped in Hanukkah wrapping
- 46:12paper. And there's one scene where
- 46:14Tutter is standing under a menorah.
- 46:17Which Joe leads me to my question for you as a fellow, as
- 46:22a fellow person who was raised Jewish, who are those Hanukkah
- 46:27wrapped presents for? Well.
- 46:32Which of Bear's friends, which of Bear's friends are Jewish?
- 46:37And I've got, I've got some theories that some of which you
- 46:41can't answer. I have one that I'm almost
- 46:43confident you can't answer, but I'm confident I'm right.
- 46:47But I'm curious about any of the any of your thoughts.
- 46:50Anthony, you can't participate. In this, no, I understand.
- 46:54So well, here's my first thought is bear probably just got the
- 46:57cheapest wrapping paper because he's a bear on a budget.
- 47:01And the the the other animals in the house are not they don't
- 47:04care. They're just ripping up the
- 47:05paper. They don't care what's on it.
- 47:08But if we're are we talking about like the all the
- 47:10characters I've met so far? Or are we saying just the
- 47:13characters? In the big they're all, they're
- 47:15all there. OK, well I guess Jeremiah is not
- 47:19in this. Jeremiah is not this.
- 47:22I would say Tutter is is the most Jewish coded coded of any
- 47:27of them because he is neurotic. Yes, that was that was that was
- 47:31something that that Ali and Eli were talking about because
- 47:36Tutter is neurotic. And also there was that joke on
- 47:39Twitter about how all blue Muppets are Jewish a while ago
- 47:45and Tutter is blue. But I mean, I think the obvious
- 47:50answer that Joe can't answer is that it's it's Harry the Duck
- 47:55who is there but doesn't have a speaking line.
- 47:59But he and his grandma are are in that scene in the opening
- 48:04theme song, alongside Pip and Pop's grandparents Etta and
- 48:09Otto, and Pip and Pop's cousin Talley I.
- 48:16Look forward to meeting this Jewish duck.
- 48:19But it's delicious. So Harry is voiced by is voiced.
- 48:23Harry is performed by Eric Jacobson, an early Eric Jacobson
- 48:28role. And and one of his few original
- 48:31characters he's never gotten to play in his career like
- 48:35prominently. Which which by the way, not to
- 48:37segue this, but Speaking of original Eric Jacobson
- 48:41characters, the the mole that he played in one episode of
- 48:45Muppets. Now that puppet was in that
- 48:48opening sequence in in this special.
- 48:51Yep, that's true. Awesome, had to tie that that
- 48:55little bow but. I know, and I completely forgot
- 48:59about Muppets now. Yep, as well you should.
- 49:03I can remember every episode of Bear in the Big Blue House, but
- 49:07if you ask me anything that happened in Muppets now, I would
- 49:10say Pepe was there. We got to know the mole.
- 49:14The mole is the best part. But Harry has a grandmother who
- 49:21we see, who speaks with a thick Russian accent and has like
- 49:26traditional Russian clothing on. And I think that it means that
- 49:31Harry is Jewish. So I think all of those presents
- 49:34are for Harry. I'm going to throw one more out
- 49:37there. One more possibility.
- 49:39Is Treelo speaking Yiddish? Is that what that is?
- 49:46I. Think that's it.
- 49:50I think Treelo is Jewish. Let's leave the silence in the
- 50:02podcast. Just kidding.
- 50:05Joe, did you notice we mentioned briefly, we mentioned briefly in
- 50:09our last episode that you'd be seeing Dikembe, the gems, Spock
- 50:14during the Santa Hog number. Your favorite?
- 50:18Next to the reindeer there is also an antelope in one scene
- 50:23who is only in one of the choruses and isn't there in the
- 50:27other one. I don't know why there is an
- 50:30antelope in one chorus but not the second chorus.
- 50:37I didn't even know that's what a What's the name of the animal?
- 50:42A Gemsbach, it's a titles. Antelope, it's a titles.
- 50:45I mean sounds. Like you work for the COM.
- 50:48Books kid like me. I absolutely was not a Zoo Books
- 50:51kid. I love the commercials.
- 50:54But yes, I could not have if you could have paid me money, and I
- 50:57would not have been able to tell you what that thing was or
- 50:59whether or not it appeared in puppet form on this television
- 51:03program. Yeah, well, we'll have to do a
- 51:05Jim Henson's The Animal Show with Stinky and Jake, a podcast
- 51:10at one point. Gladly.
- 51:11Gladly. A show where Dave Goals played
- 51:14one of the leagues because he's in true.
- 51:17And Dave Goals was one of the puppets also.
- 51:21True. That's true.
- 51:27You guys know what? You know what?
- 51:28Hey, go ahead. It's your it's your show.
- 51:31No. No, no, Anthony, I want to hear
- 51:32what you have to say. You're the guest.
- 51:33Everybody gets to hear me all the time.
- 51:37Yeah. Was they going to say there was
- 51:40another? Now I've now I've forgotten.
- 51:42Oh, so in the second episode, another thing that I really like
- 51:45in this is the sequence where they all get their presents in
- 51:50the second app and open pop get a robot clam from Mars.
- 51:56Are we just going to ignore that?
- 51:58I love the fact that they're just like, OK, there's no thank
- 52:03you, There's no like, wow, what a great gift.
- 52:06They're just like robot clam from Mars.
- 52:09OK, that's. Fine, and then and then Tutter.
- 52:13We wanted real clam. Tutter gets a book.
- 52:16They did. They want to eat them.
- 52:17They can't eat that. They open up their present and
- 52:20say you can't eat this and throw it at bear.
- 52:24Right. And then Tutter gets a book
- 52:25about cheese and he can't eat that.
- 52:28He can't. He's a nerd, but also which is.
- 52:33Interesting because there's one episode earlier I think in
- 52:37season 2 where it's revealed that Tutter hates books.
- 52:42Yeah, but he probably learns to appreciate him by the end.
- 52:44Yeah, he does, because sometimes books are about cheese.
- 52:47So I guess I proved myself wrong.
- 52:50It's called continuity. Really heard of it?
- 52:54I should have. My wife Roz has a book called
- 53:01the World Cheese Book, and every time we buy a new kind of
- 53:05cheese, we look it up in the book to see if it's in there.
- 53:09So Tutter and my wife are the same person.
- 53:14Obviously. Is this also the scene where
- 53:18Tutter is? I'm sorry, I'm going to get this
- 53:20wrong. Like Tutter, is he reading his
- 53:22book? And someone was like, you sure
- 53:24know a lot about cheese. And he's like, I dabble.
- 53:26Yeah, it's it's, it's Ojo. It's him and Ojo are looking at
- 53:29the book. It's great.
- 53:31Yeah, I love that that like that I dabble.
- 53:33What a great line. It's it's delivered so well, I
- 53:36still think. I still think I like Ojo more
- 53:39when she's with Tutter because I think Ojo and Tutter as foils
- 53:45for each other makes me appreciate Ojo a little more
- 53:49because I do agree with Joe from the first episode that Ojo is
- 53:53almost a little too normal compared to a lot of the other
- 53:56characters on the show. Well, I think that's in the
- 54:00first episode you talked about how Joe talked about how often a
- 54:03character will just be like a kid.
- 54:06But I think that that is more of a problem in a show like this
- 54:11where she's the smurfed right where she's she's the girl one.
- 54:15Everyone else is a boy and they get distinctive personalities
- 54:19and even like, I don't know if you've gotten into this, the The
- 54:23Boys Will be Boys song and the You Go Girl song.
- 54:25We have not gotten to. I wanted to watch those two
- 54:28episodes. They were actually on my
- 54:30original draft. There's a boys will be boys and
- 54:33girls will be girls episodes, right?
- 54:35Two parter. And in so those are both on that
- 54:38first soundtrack album that you mentioned.
- 54:41So I hear, I've heard those a million times and the boys will
- 54:43be boys song is like playing in the mud, getting dirty, swinging
- 54:47umbrellas around or whatever and and the swinging.
- 54:51Umbrellas around. There's.
- 54:52Some lighting in the rain. There's some light about
- 54:55umbrellas, isn't there, Becca? Hold on.
- 54:58Am I misremembering? Yeah, well, there is, but.
- 55:02It's they ride it with with the. Fellas hang, Pip goes oh, excuse
- 55:06me, Pop goes, one of them goes hanging out with a bunch of
- 55:11fellas, and then everybody on the the the whole the cast sings
- 55:16in unison in a storm with no umbrellas.
- 55:19Boys, boys. That's what it is.
- 55:23But so that's all about like running outside, scuffing up
- 55:26your knees, picking your nose, and then they don't say picking
- 55:29nose and they don't say Mount Picanos.
- 55:32And then and then the Ojo one, the you go girl song is just
- 55:37like you go Ojo. You can do whatever you want.
- 55:41Girls can be whoever they want. And that's the that's the
- 55:44premise of the song. She's singing the song by
- 55:46herself. No, it's like, it's like bear
- 55:48being like, you go girl, yeah, you go Ojo, be the girl you want
- 55:52to be and do what you want to, right?
- 55:55But so it's just like boys do specific things and girls can
- 55:59contain multitudes, you know, Cuz she's she needs to be the
- 56:02only one. It's it's interesting.
- 56:05It and that's not a well meaning show, you know, like for sure.
- 56:09It absolutely is interesting and we'll talk about that if we do a
- 56:13Season 2, if people like this and we do a Season 2 and
- 56:17response has been good so far, so maybe we'll do a Season 2.
- 56:21I'd love to talk about those episodes because there's also a
- 56:24very notable cameo in in the Boys Will be Boys episode.
- 56:30Is it Dave? Goals.
- 56:31No, a cameo of an old puppet. Isn't the Dave goals?
- 56:36Dave the Hewitt. No, I don't want to spoil it for
- 56:41Joe, No. No, don't spoil it.
- 56:42Don't spoil it. I don't want to know.
- 56:43I don't. Want to know another thing?
- 56:44I meant to bring up the Doc Hog sequence.
- 56:48We talked about the Santa Hog, but you, I feel like you know
- 56:52better than me, Becca, is that the first time we ever leave the
- 56:56grounds of the Big Blue House to go to Woodland Valley Mall to
- 57:00see Doc Santa Hog? It's not the first time because
- 57:02we go to Doc Hog's doctor's office at OH.
- 57:06Sure. Of course.
- 57:07Yeah, yeah. At least once.
- 57:09But it is one of and it is a harbinger of how one episode
- 57:14from now or two episodes from now, we will be in Season 4,
- 57:19Becca's least favorite season of Bear in the Big Blue House that
- 57:23I. It's the around the corner
- 57:25season. Yeah, I still haven't watched
- 57:27every episode from season 4 again.
- 57:29I know this show like the back of my hand.
- 57:31I know this show like the back of Charles Dickens hand.
- 57:35But I truly do not know season 4.
- 57:38Wait, let me. No, go ahead, Go ahead.
- 57:41I lose interest in it when it becomes less self-contained.
- 57:47Yeah, it's, it's interesting. It's really, I mean, I sit
- 57:50around the corner. But Joe, this one's for you.
- 57:53It's the Goliath Chronicles of. Excuse me, Anthony.
- 57:57Anthony, I rewatched Gargoyles last year.
- 58:01Radical. And I gave up about 3/4 of the
- 58:05way through the Goliath Chronicles because I was like, I
- 58:09am not enjoying this new direction the show is taking.
- 58:14Yeah, yeah. And it's the same, right?
- 58:15It's like it's basically the same show, but it just doesn't
- 58:18feel right. OK, but like, what if what if
- 58:20Lexington lived in the Big Blue house?
- 58:22What would that be like that? 'D be cool.
- 58:25I think he doesn't. His name is Benny the Bat and
- 58:28he's got a song that goes Anthony.
- 58:31I'm Benny the Bat, and I like it like that.
- 58:34Or something to cool. You see, bats are cool.
- 58:38They're nobody's fool. I remember that one.
- 58:43No, guys, what if Bronx? What if Bronx didn't have a
- 58:47house that he moved into the dark hog?
- 58:49Do we have anything else to say about these Christmas episodes,
- 58:53or do we just have to talk about the Goliath Chronicles?
- 58:58I think I said everything important, you know.
- 59:01You know I own the Gargoyles board game.
- 59:04So do I. Me and Joe almost played it last
- 59:07time we was over here. So I had.
- 59:09We had planned on it, we didn't get around to it.
- 59:10I had a bunch of friends over to play the Gargoyles board game
- 59:14over the summer, actually, and let me tell you something, I
- 59:20didn't enjoy it. It looked.
- 59:22It seems way too complicated. That's not even the problem.
- 59:27Because I eat complicated board games for breakfast.
- 59:30Sure. It's just complicated with very
- 59:33little payoff. Sure.
- 59:36But any other thoughts on these Christmas episodes of Bear in
- 59:42the Big Blue House? I've I look I'm.
- 59:47Good. No, go ahead, Anthony.
- 59:49Of one, which is that I really enjoy that they all want more
- 59:53eggnog. When Bear says, guess what time
- 59:56it is? Is that a?
- 59:57Reference like are they drinking?
- 59:58Are they date drinking? Well, I think they're you don't.
- 1:00:02Eggnog doesn't need to have booze added to it.
- 1:00:03You buy. No, I I know that and that's
- 1:00:05that's why it passed the sensors.
- 1:00:07But is that actually, do you think that's a reference?
- 1:00:09I do not like more eggnog. I I I do not think Tutter and
- 1:00:14Ojo are secretly drinking eggnog with rummy, no.
- 1:00:18I guess what I'm really asking is, is Mitchell Kriedman like,
- 1:00:21hey, let's, let's slip in a little reference in there, a
- 1:00:23little joke in. There for the yeah, maybe, yeah,
- 1:00:24maybe, yeah, yeah. Right.
- 1:00:26I mean, listen, listen, Mitchell.
- 1:00:28Mitchell Kriegman is quite a wild card.
- 1:00:31Hey, and you know what? It's fine.
- 1:00:32It's, it's not, I'm not saying it's an inappropriate joke.
- 1:00:34I'm just curious if it's that was the intention.
- 1:00:37Sure, Mitchell, if you're listening.
- 1:00:40It's fine. It's fine, Mitchell.
- 1:00:42It's fine. Yeah, don't, don't, don't sweat
- 1:00:44about it. So.
- 1:00:47I want to thank both of you for for being on this episode.
- 1:00:51I want to thank Joe especially for coming with me on this weird
- 1:00:55and wild journey through Bear in the Big Blue House.
- 1:00:59Joe, now that you've watched, now that you have watched 11
- 1:01:04episodes of Bear in the Big Blue House, plus the unaired pilot,
- 1:01:09what are you thinking? So, yeah, I've been putting a
- 1:01:12lot of thought into this because it's so exciting for me to get
- 1:01:17to watch like essentially what is a Muppet program that I've
- 1:01:21never seen before because it's so rare for people like us.
- 1:01:23So we've seen everything and to get to like dive into something
- 1:01:26new at this point in my career as a Muppet Blogger, it's just
- 1:01:32such a joy for the quality of the show.
- 1:01:35I think it's great. I think it's, it's fun.
- 1:01:38I'm invested in the characters. I think like I get the way it's
- 1:01:42written. I think it works for what
- 1:01:43they're going for. The music is great.
- 1:01:45I can go on and on about what I love about it.
- 1:01:48The one thing that's kind of giving me a little bit of a
- 1:01:52pause, I guess, is because of the intended demographic and it
- 1:01:58doesn't have that. I mean, we talked a little bit
- 1:02:00about this in the first episode, but like, because it doesn't
- 1:02:03have that a second layer to, you know, to make it overly
- 1:02:08enjoyable for adults. It doesn't feel like the kind of
- 1:02:11show that I just want to have on in the background to to watch,
- 1:02:14you know, to catch up on to say that I've watched every episode
- 1:02:17of Bear. I'm very happy that I've been
- 1:02:19introduced to the world of Bear, but I don't think I need to
- 1:02:22watch 96 episodes 100. That's how many.
- 1:02:25Episodes are whoa one. 117. Almost as many.
- 1:02:30Almost as many as The Muppet Show.
- 1:02:32And if you count Breakfast with Bear more.
- 1:02:36Canonical. It's non canonical.
- 1:02:38But if you're counting breakfast with Bear, then you're counting
- 1:02:41Muppets tonight. OK, fair.
- 1:02:43Yeah. Right, right.
- 1:02:45That's what I always say. What I do think that this, I
- 1:02:54said this to Joe earlier today. This to me feels like out of
- 1:02:58everything post Jim, Jim's death, this has the closest to
- 1:03:02being like the classic Muppet fee.
- 1:03:04Like it's a group of characters I love seeing, you know, they
- 1:03:08just, they're, they're just fun to watch exist in a way that the
- 1:03:12Sesame and Muppet Chew and Fraggle Rock characters are, and
- 1:03:15in a way that like, Stinky and Jake are not or the Hoobs are
- 1:03:19not or or whatever, like you're laughing, but because you know,
- 1:03:23it's true. I'm also laughing because I've
- 1:03:25never seen an episode of the Hoobs.
- 1:03:27I I'm like, I don't know, I assume you're right.
- 1:03:29Anthony Anthony I agree completely.
- 1:03:32And I think if there's post Jim Henson projects that evoke
- 1:03:37family, I think that this is this is definitely at the top
- 1:03:44tide with Bratz of the lost nebula.
- 1:03:49Does that have been Tripoli your.
- 1:03:51Family, family. But no, I agree.
- 1:03:54I mean, again, I love this show so much and it's always a
- 1:03:58pleasure to talk about it with anybody, especially with my
- 1:04:02Tough Pigs friends and especially with you guys at
- 1:04:05home. And again, I hope everybody has
- 1:04:09a very, very happy holiday. Whatever holiday you celebrate,
- 1:04:14make sure to to to take care of each other.
- 1:04:17You know, the message of the Bear in the Big Blue House
- 1:04:19holiday special is important, especially this time of year.
- 1:04:22See if there's any way you can help out people in your
- 1:04:25community. I would also, sorry, I would
- 1:04:29also love to just I want to thank everybody one more time
- 1:04:31for joining us for this miniseries.
- 1:04:33It was a a blast. Thank you backup for for hosting
- 1:04:37this thing and for introducing me to the world of the Big Blue
- 1:04:41house. I would love to hear from
- 1:04:45everybody what they thought of this and what and if we were to
- 1:04:47do more episodes of this podcast, what they'd love to
- 1:04:50hear us talk about episodes they want us to cover special guests.
- 1:04:54They'd love us for us to bring in.
- 1:04:56And I want to remind you because you're listening to this podcast
- 1:05:00on the Muppet Fan Podcast with thetoughpigs.com channel, that
- 1:05:04means that there's going to be another podcast coming on this
- 1:05:07channel very soon. So I hope that you will
- 1:05:09subscribe and listen to whatever it is that's coming up within
- 1:05:13the next few weeks. And I've got I've got some big
- 1:05:15ideas for podcasts, you know, I really do.
- 1:05:19Here's hoping that 2025 sees one of them come to light.
- 1:05:25Great, I can't wait. Let let me say as a listener of
- 1:05:27this show before the previous episodes, I've only heard the
- 1:05:30pilot because it just came out. I loved it.
- 1:05:32I'm so glad you both did it. I think it was such a a great
- 1:05:35idea. Thank you for having me on, but
- 1:05:37I can't let 4 episodes pass without mentioning Becca's
- 1:05:41greatest idea. Becca's greatest realization?
- 1:05:45Oh my God, Anthony, thank you. I know exactly.
- 1:05:47What am I going to say, Becca? You say it.
- 1:05:49You say it is your no. No, no, no.
- 1:05:50I want you to say it. OK, which is that?
- 1:05:52Any lyrics by the band Modest Mouse can be said in a Tutter
- 1:05:56voice and make sense right out of gas Rd. out of beer, out of
- 1:06:01gas beer, out of Rd. beer, out of car.
- 1:06:04I don't know how I'm going to go beer or whatever.
- 1:06:07I think about not just this thing that I came up with, but
- 1:06:11specifically Anthony's choice of using the song out of Gas by
- 1:06:15Modest Mouse. I think about that literally
- 1:06:20once a day. I hear Tutter's voice saying out
- 1:06:24of gas Bear out of Rd. Bear.
- 1:06:27That's that's the, that's the anxious 1 I think of and the
- 1:06:31cheerful 1 I always think of is shoot what, what was it?
- 1:06:38You wasted. You wasted life, bam.
- 1:06:41Why wouldn't you waste the afterlife?
- 1:06:43Bam. Right, it was going to be Ice
- 1:06:45Age heat wave. Can't complain.
- 1:06:47I can't complain. Bam, you know, like just and
- 1:06:52it's so true. It's so funny because they have
- 1:06:55mouse in their name and it's also true.
- 1:06:59So thank you. The.
- 1:07:00World's at large. Bam, Why should I complain?
