- 0:00Hey guys, this is friendly. Welcome back to another episode
- 0:04on the podcast. OK, so today is really special
- 0:08because we closed out in Second Thessalonians yesterday and
- 0:13we're starting a new book study series.
- 0:15I kept praying and asking the Lord as I was wrapping up Second
- 0:19Thessalonians. OK, God, what should I study
- 0:22next? What do you want me to really
- 0:24press into and learn? And what has been so clear on my
- 0:29heart is this desire to know the Father's love even deeper and
- 0:35have more of a revelationary response and so that I can give
- 0:41it out more freely and more sacrificially because Jesus
- 0:45tells his disciples freely. You have received so freely give
- 0:50and I don't want to just talk about love.
- 0:53I want to actually live it out from a place of truly knowing
- 0:57Him who is love. So we are going to be walking
- 1:02through 1st and 2nd and 3rd John over the next few weeks and I
- 1:07really believe that this is going to be a super identity
- 1:10shaping series for me and I pray for all of us.
- 1:15Before we read, just a little background that I want to go
- 1:18into to set the tone. This book, it was written by
- 1:22John. This same John who literally
- 1:25walked with Jesus, talked with him and witnessed his teaching
- 1:29and ministry. And this man, he had front row
- 1:34access to this life of Jesus like he is literally leaning on
- 1:38his chest at the Last Supper. He wrote this letter to affirm
- 1:43believers in their faith, to correct any false teachings and
- 1:47misunderstanding, and to really build their confidence in their
- 1:52identity in Christ. And something that I love about
- 1:56John is how he writes because he's very simple and direct, but
- 2:02he also uses very vivid contrast.
- 2:05He contrasts light versus darkness and truth and lies,
- 2:10love and hate. It's super straightforward, but
- 2:14it still paints a picture that we can imagine, and honestly, it
- 2:18is so relevant for us today. At this point in the early
- 2:24church, Christianity had already been around for about a
- 2:27generation and there was starting to be a decline in
- 2:32commitment. We could see more compromise.
- 2:36There's more conforming to the world standards and kind of like
- 2:40a lukewarm cultural Christianity, which sounds
- 2:44familiar. So as we read this, don't just
- 2:48listen to it and hear it as history.
- 2:52I want us to hone in and think this is for us right now because
- 2:57God's Word, it is living and active and it is not dated by
- 3:03time. It does not expire.
- 3:05So let's just look at it from a lens of this is for us today.
- 3:11And also one more thing that I do love.
- 3:14John is often referred to as the disciple whom Jesus loved.
- 3:19And as I was thinking about this as I started this book, I
- 3:22thought it was kind of funny because we see him refer to
- 3:26himself as this in his own gospel.
- 3:28But instead of that coming from an area of pride, I think it
- 3:33actually reveals something really powerful.
- 3:36John knew his identity. He was secure in the fact that
- 3:41Jesus loved him. And that confidence that he had,
- 3:45it shaped how he lived and how he loved those around him.
- 3:50So that really inspired me as as I was thinking on it.
- 3:54But with that, let's go ahead and read.
- 3:56I'm going to be reading from the Passion translation, but we're
- 4:00going to read first John chapter 1 verses one through 4 today.
- 4:06We saw him with our very own eyes.
- 4:09We gazed upon him and heard him speak.
- 4:12Our hands actually touched Him, the one who was from the
- 4:16beginning the living expression of God.
- 4:21This life Giver was made visible and we have seen him.
- 4:25We testify to this truth. The eternal life Giver lived
- 4:30face to face with the Father and has now dawned upon us.
- 4:35So we proclaim to you what we have seen and heard about this
- 4:40life Giver so that we may share and enjoy this life together.
- 4:45For truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son
- 4:49Jesus, the Anointed One. We are writing these things to
- 4:54you because we want to release to you our fullness of joy.
- 4:59So good. OK, so going into my takeaways,
- 5:05I really liked how John started this letter.
- 5:08It wasn't with opinions, but it was with evidence.
- 5:11He's basically saying in layman's terms, guys, I saw
- 5:15Jesus, I heard him speak, I touched him.
- 5:19This is real. And there is so much weight in
- 5:22that because he immediately establishes A foundational
- 5:26truth. Jesus is the living expression
- 5:30of God. God did not stay distant.
- 5:34He came near. He took on flesh.
- 5:40Jesus is God. That is a core part of the
- 5:44Christian faith, and we see this all throughout Scripture.
- 5:48We see this in Colossians 1, John 1, Hebrews one.
- 5:52There's something about all of these authors starting it and
- 5:57establishing it because everything was created through
- 6:01him, by him, and for him. And here's why that really
- 6:05matters. Life is found in Jesus and not
- 6:12just eternal life, like one day when I die, I'm saved.
- 6:18But it's your present life right now.
- 6:21So I want us to really sit with this.
- 6:24What do you believe brings you life?
- 6:28What do you run to for happiness or fulfillment?
- 6:33And if you're honest, if that thing was taken away, something
- 6:39that really brings you happiness, think about your job,
- 6:43maybe it's a relationship, your body or appearance, your plans.
- 6:48Would you still say that life is found in Jesus?
- 6:52That Jesus is enough? Because John is making it
- 6:56crystal clear. Life is not found in what Jesus
- 7:00gives, it is found in him. And when you actually know him,
- 7:07not just know about him, when you truly know him and
- 7:10experience Jesus, you cannot help but share.
- 7:15John lays out this kind of road map.
- 7:19I'm very visual, so I like to put things in arrows sometimes.
- 7:22It's like an equation. But I wrote out he's seen arrow,
- 7:29he testifies, arrow he proclaims.
- 7:34And while we have not physically walked with Jesus like John did,
- 7:39we do walk with him by his Spirit.
- 7:43So I think the question then becomes, are we testifying?
- 7:49Are we proclaiming? Because guys, you know if you
- 7:56know God, just like you know if you know a person in your life,
- 8:02there's no room for question marks.
- 8:05And knowing God is not just a feeling, it's so much deeper
- 8:09than that. It produces an assurance, a
- 8:14confidence, which gives us a secure identity.
- 8:18But that kind of knowing it only comes through a relationship.
- 8:25It's not a once a week meet and greet with God or a surface
- 8:29level check in. It requires consistency,
- 8:33intentionality, and intimate time with the Lord because
- 8:39that's when you learn His voice sitting in His presence.
- 8:43You begin being transformed by His word.
- 8:47And it's out of that relationship that something
- 8:50beautiful is born. Because we're then brought into
- 8:54fellowship, and John addresses the shared life that we're made
- 8:58for. Fellowship is not just hanging
- 9:01out, It's actually a partnership in the truth.
- 9:05It is anchored in God's Word, it's unified by belief, and
- 9:11ultimately it's sustained every single day by the Holy Spirit.
- 9:17We are to know God and to walk with others who also know Him.
- 9:23We're made to live in the fullness of His presence where
- 9:27Psalm 1611 says that is where the fullness of joy is found.
- 9:32So I think that this is a moment for us to really take kind of an
- 9:37inventory on our lives. One, are you taking advantage of
- 9:42the gift of fellowship? Who are you surrounding yourself
- 9:47with? What are you filling your time
- 9:49with? And also, is your confidence in
- 9:54your relationship with Jesus the true life giver?
- 9:57Is it being reflected in how boldly and openly you share Him?
- 10:03It's not just meant to be with your words, but with your entire
- 10:07life. Are you unashamed?
- 10:12Because when you do know Jesus, it naturally shows.
- 10:19So with all of that, I'm going to go ahead and close this out
- 10:22in prayer. Father God, thank you so much
- 10:28for revealing yourself to us through Jesus, the living
- 10:33expression of who you are. Thank you for not staying
- 10:40distant, but for coming so near, so much so that we would truly
- 10:45know You and experience full, abundant life in You.
- 10:53I pray that You would really deepen our understanding of Your
- 10:57love, that it would not just be in our thoughts and minds, but
- 11:02anchored in our hearts. Would you draw us into a more
- 11:06intimate relationship with You? Jesus?
- 11:10Teach us to recognize Your voice and to crave Your presence every
- 11:15single day from the moment that we wake up to the time that we
- 11:19lay our heads. Would you strengthen our
- 11:21confidence in our identity as your beloved children and let
- 11:27that confidence overflow into how we love others?
- 11:32Would you give us a boldness, not that is proud, not that is
- 11:37arrogant, but humble, humble enough to testify and to
- 11:42proclaim and to live unashamed of the truth of the gospel.
- 11:48May our lives reflect that we truly do know you, Jesus.
- 11:54We give this entire study of first and second and third John
- 11:58to you. We give this day to you.
- 12:01Lord, just do your work in our hearts from the inside out.
- 12:05Transform us. We are here to glorify your
- 12:09name. We pray this in your name,
- 12:11Jesus. Amen.
- 12:13OK y'all. Well that is what I have for
- 12:15today's episode. I'm so looking forward to going
- 12:18through the series with you guys and praying that y'all have a
- 12:22wonderful rest of your day. I will see y'all on the next
- 12:25pod.
