Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: The India FTA is up to businesses now
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Judging by the coverage out of New Delhi overnight, the
- 0:02Speaker 1: Indian press are as optimistic about the trade deal with
- 0:05Speaker 1: New Zealand as optimistic as our government. Industry and as
- 0:08Speaker 1: of last week, labor are about it. Here their Trade
- 0:12Speaker 1: department has pointed out that the thing excludes dairy, so
- 0:15Speaker 1: that's safe for them, along with other sensitive markets that
- 0:18Speaker 1: they're interested in. They like the fact that we have
- 0:20Speaker 1: conceded one hundred percent duty free access in key manufacturing
- 0:25Speaker 1: labor intensive industries. The Mint news site names checks, textiles, leather,
- 0:30Speaker 1: foot where, engineering goods, plastics, process, food, a whole bunch
- 0:34Speaker 1: of stuff. Here. Our primary industries are celebrating their wins too,
- 0:38Speaker 1: and that's the point that I think has been somewhat
- 0:40Speaker 1: lost in the last few months. Both sides win from
- 0:44Speaker 1: trade deals. You make some concessions, sure, but you get
- 0:47Speaker 1: some gains. Like any deal, it's not all one way traffic.
- 0:51Speaker 1: India is set to overtake Germany as the third world's
- 0:54Speaker 1: third largest economy. It's an absolute behemoth. It's massive. To
- 0:59Speaker 1: not jump on board would have meant missing the boat.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Most Kibis can see the benefits from the deal that
- 1:06Speaker 1: Goff and Clark to their credit did and signed with China.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Trump may be trying to sully the reputation of free trade,
- 1:11Speaker 1: but it hasn't dampened our spirits because we can see
- 1:14Speaker 1: the benefits. There's an argument to be made against NAFTA
- 1:19Speaker 1: affecting the rost belt workers in the US, and you
- 1:21Speaker 1: see that showing up at the polls. But in this
- 1:24Speaker 1: country the benefits have largely outweighed the costs. And there
- 1:27Speaker 1: will be costs, like with any deal, but the net
- 1:31Speaker 1: benefit is what we should be focused on to realize
- 1:34Speaker 1: those benefits. The rains are now firmly in the hands
- 1:38Speaker 1: of business to do what it does best. Our exporterers,
- 1:41Speaker 1: our deal makers, our market specialists are already on the blower,
- 1:45Speaker 1: on the plane or in country trying to get a
- 1:47Speaker 1: slice of the action, and good luck to them. For
- 1:50Speaker 1: more from early edition with Ryan Bridge. Listen live to
- 1:54Speaker 1: News Talks at be from five am weekdays, or follow
- 1:57Speaker 1: the podcast on iHeartRadio.
