- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And he came thither unto a cave,
- 0:04Speaker 1: and lodged there. And behold, the word of the Lord
- 0:08Speaker 1: came to him, and he said unto him, What doest
- 0:11Speaker 1: thou here, Elijah? 1 Kings 19.9 When the weight of
- 0:18Speaker 1: my journey weighs on me, and the threats from the
- 0:22Speaker 1: cynics echo around me, strengthen me, Lord, that I can
- 0:27Speaker 1: complete my mission on this earth. Provide me with the
- 0:31Speaker 1: energy and spiritual nourishment to make it to the next
- 0:34Speaker 1: checkpoint in my journey. I make the conscious decision to
- 0:39Speaker 1: ignore the chatter and empty threats and to remember all
- 0:44Speaker 1: the magnificent miracles you've done on my behalf. So I
- 0:50Speaker 1: say to myself, get up, keep going, because the Lord
- 0:55Speaker 1: wants to meet you on the mountaintop of His presence.
- 1:00Speaker 1: As you speak, Lord, tune my ears to hear your
- 1:04Speaker 1: whisper in the midst of the calamities that seem to
- 1:07Speaker 1: be taking place. For it is in the calamity that
- 1:11Speaker 1: you'll teach me how to hear through the static and
- 1:14Speaker 1: noise of this world. Connect me to my now and
- 1:19Speaker 1: my next as you did with Elijah and Elisha. I
- 1:24Speaker 1: will finish strong and get the prize you've set up
- 1:28Speaker 1: for me to receive. In Jesus' name.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Amen.

- 1:55Speaker 2: Elijah at Mount Sinai In our last story, Elijah put
- 2:00Speaker 2: the God of the universe on display against the false
- 2:03Speaker 2: gods of Baal. 450 prophets of Baal and King Ahab
- 2:08Speaker 2: gathered to challenge Elijah and the one true God. In
- 2:12Speaker 2: front of the whole nation, God sent fire and rain
- 2:15Speaker 2: down from the skies to prove his power and might.
- 2:19Speaker 2: The blighted and unfertile land finally received rain. Now we
- 2:23Speaker 2: learn about the witch queen Jezebel. The darkness she carries
- 2:28Speaker 2: infects all those around her, and she seeks to take
- 2:31Speaker 2: the life of Elijah for making a fool out of her,
- 2:34Speaker 2: the king, and Baal. Inspired by the book, The First Kings.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Jack Graham here today with another episode of The Bible
- 2:45Speaker 3: in a Year. In our last reading, we saw how
- 2:48Speaker 3: Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal to a showdown. It
- 2:52Speaker 3: was their false god against the Lord Almighty, God Almighty,
- 2:56Speaker 3: the one true God, at a place called Mount Carmel.
- 3:00Speaker 3: In the presence of thousands of Israelites, God showed his
- 3:03Speaker 3: amazing power, raining fire down from heaven upon the altar
- 3:08Speaker 3: while Baal was missing in action. Of course, there was
- 3:11Speaker 3: no Baal because he is no god. Elijah then had
- 3:15Speaker 3: every false prophet killed, and the Lord finally sent rain
- 3:18Speaker 3: to quench the dry land in the kingdom. In effect,
- 3:23Speaker 3: a revival. Today we're going to hear the aftermath of
- 3:27Speaker 3: this great victory. How Ahab and his wicked wife Jezebel
- 3:31Speaker 3: react to what occurred and what Elijah does in response.
- 3:36Speaker 3: It will be a reminder to all of us that
- 3:38Speaker 3: often the enemy will seek to discourage us and defeat
- 3:42Speaker 3: us after great victories. Let's listen today to the story
- 3:46Speaker 3: of Elijah the great prophet.
- 3:49Speaker 2: The storms raged relentlessly. Wind and rain beat against Ahab's
- 3:55Speaker 2: coat as he made his way back to the palace.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Elijah had made a fool out of him. More than that,
- 4:01Speaker 2: he had slain his prophets. Ahab burst through the palace
- 4:05Speaker 2: doors and flung his wet cloak onto the floor. Defeated
- 4:09Speaker 2: and ashamed, he entered into his room. The air changed
- 4:13Speaker 2: when Ahab opened the chamber doors. The atmosphere was thicker, heavier,
- 4:18Speaker 2: and more sinister. To Ahab it was all too familiar.
- 4:23Speaker 2: His wife was in the room. There, sitting in the corner,
- 4:27Speaker 2: was the witch-queen Jezebel. She sat at attention. Authority oozed
- 4:32Speaker 2: out of her and slithered about the room. She exuded strength.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Only it was the type of strength one feared, not admired.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Ahab lay at her feet and told her of everything
- 4:43Speaker 2: that happened. The prophets, the sacrifice, the fire, the storm
- 4:47Speaker 2: and the bloodshed. Jezebel sat silently as she listened to
- 4:51Speaker 2: her husband. Although he was king, he was truly a
- 4:55Speaker 2: weaker vessel than she. She stroked his hair and listened
- 4:59Speaker 2: to his incessant whining. Jezebel teemed with anger. The wickedness
- 5:04Speaker 2: in her heart was aroused at the news of Elijah
- 5:06Speaker 2: and God. She stood up slowly. Ahab watched as she
- 5:10Speaker 2: paced the room. Lighting lit up the room in an instant,
- 5:14Speaker 2: and then the room returned to darkness. May the gods
- 5:18Speaker 2: kill me, she whispered. May they kill me if by
- 5:21Speaker 2: this time tomorrow I have not held Elijah's head on
- 5:25Speaker 2: the tip of my spear. She yelled for her servants
- 5:29Speaker 2: and had them send Elijah the same message. The message wrote,
- 5:33Speaker 2: May the gods strike me down if I have not
- 5:35Speaker 2: killed you as you have killed my prophets. Jezebel's threats
- 5:40Speaker 2: were not empty. Elijah knew that there would be no
- 5:43Speaker 2: hiding from a vengeful gaze. Terrified, Elijah left his servant
- 5:48Speaker 2: and fled to the wilderness. All day he traveled, taking
- 5:51Speaker 2: no food, water, or companion. Jezebel desired for Elijah to
- 5:56Speaker 2: be scared. She wanted him to be tormented by the
- 5:59Speaker 2: idea that she could find him at any minute. It
- 6:02Speaker 2: was the fear she enjoyed most. Exhausted, Elijah finally stopped
- 6:08Speaker 2: under a single broom tree. He laid there sobbing to
- 6:11Speaker 2: the Lord. He had just had such a tremendous victory.
- 6:15Speaker 2: and now he was hiding for his life. His body
- 6:18Speaker 2: was weary from the day before, and his mind was
- 6:21Speaker 2: muddled from panic and fleeing. Elijah lay curled up beside
- 6:25Speaker 2: the tree and whispered to God, I have had enough, Lord,
- 6:30Speaker 2: take my life. As he prayed for the Lord to
- 6:33Speaker 2: remove him from existence, he fell into a deep sleep.
- 6:37Speaker 2: A slight breeze trickled in across the wilderness. The sun
- 6:41Speaker 2: was beginning its descent across the valley, and the skies
- 6:44Speaker 2: were golden. and beautiful. Elijah felt a gentle tug on
- 6:48Speaker 2: his robe. He opened his eyes to see an angel
- 6:53Speaker 2: sitting beside him. Next to him was some baked bread
- 6:56Speaker 2: sitting on hot stones next to a jug of water.
- 6:59Speaker 2: The angel smiled and said, Get.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Up and eat.
- 7:03Speaker 2: His voice was gentle, kind, and foreign. Elijah looked down
- 7:07Speaker 2: at the meal, then up again. The angel was gone.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Elijah ate and lay back down again. He slept some more,
- 7:15Speaker 2: this time through the night. Again Elijah woke to the
- 7:19Speaker 2: angel tugging at his robe. Get up and eat, for
- 7:22Speaker 2: the journey ahead will be great, the angel said. So
- 7:26Speaker 2: Elijah had his fill of bread and water, enough to
- 7:29Speaker 2: fuel him for the long journey ahead. After resting some more,
- 7:33Speaker 2: Elijah rose. God was calling him somewhere sacred, somewhere only
- 7:38Speaker 2: few had been. God was calling Elijah to Mount Sinai.
- 7:43Speaker 2: For forty days Elijah traveled, Through hills, valleys, and storms,
- 7:48Speaker 2: Elijah braved the journey to God's meeting place, the place
- 7:52Speaker 2: he had once spoken to Moses. He scaled the mighty
- 7:55Speaker 2: mountain and camped in a cave hewn by the wind.
- 7:59Speaker 2: There he slept and awaited the voice of God. What
- 8:03Speaker 2: are you doing here, Elijah? God said. Elijah woke in
- 8:07Speaker 2: a panic at the sound of God's voice. He stood
- 8:09Speaker 2: to his feet and looked outwards. I have served you fervently,
- 8:13Speaker 2: Elijah said. His knees were trembling, and his eyes were watering.
- 8:17Speaker 2: But your people have rejected you. They break your covenant.
- 8:21Speaker 2: They destroy your altars, and they kill your prophets. Elijah
- 8:25Speaker 2: was flailing his arms now, frantically speaking with God. I
- 8:29Speaker 2: am the only one left. I alone am the remaining
- 8:32Speaker 2: faithful servant, and now they come after me. They want
- 8:35Speaker 2: to kill me, and it's not fair. Go out and
- 8:38Speaker 2: stand before me at the mountain, God interrupted. Elijah walked
- 8:43Speaker 2: towards the entrance of the cave and stood outside. The
- 8:46Speaker 2: vast mountain range was on display before him. He could
- 8:49Speaker 2: see the valleys below. As Elijah stood there, a mighty
- 8:53Speaker 2: windstorm blew through the mountain. Elijah did all he could
- 8:57Speaker 2: to stay on the ground while rocks and trees were
- 9:00Speaker 2: ripped from the side of the mountains. The wind ceased
- 9:03Speaker 2: and Elijah composed himself. There a mighty quake came up
- 9:08Speaker 2: from the bottom of the earth. The whole of the
- 9:10Speaker 2: mountain shook and swayed like a wave. Rocks began to
- 9:14Speaker 2: fall around Elijah as he ducked for cover. After this,
- 9:17Speaker 2: a great fire blew through a valley below. Yet God
- 9:21Speaker 2: was not in the wind. He did not speak through
- 9:24Speaker 2: the earthquake, nor was his presence in the fire. After
- 9:28Speaker 2: all these acts of greatness, God drew in close to Elijah.
- 9:33Speaker 2: All was completely silent. All Elijah could hear was the
- 9:37Speaker 2: sound of his own breathing. Then, a gentle whisper. A still, small,
- 9:43Speaker 2: and quiet voice. What are you doing here, Elijah? God
- 9:48Speaker 2: asked gently. Elijah replied again with a whisper. The winds, earthquakes,
- 9:54Speaker 2: and fires had mimicked Elijah's previously panicked demeanor. But now,
- 10:00Speaker 2: Elijah understood how one speaks with God. I have served
- 10:04Speaker 2: you passionately, my Lord, but the people have fallen far
- 10:08Speaker 2: from you. They have killed everyone who loves you, and
- 10:11Speaker 2: now I am to be next. The Lord spoke to
- 10:14Speaker 2: Elijah again, saying, Go back the same way you came,
- 10:19Speaker 2: You are my prophet, and I have given you the
- 10:21Speaker 2: authority to anoint kings on my behalf. Go to Aram
- 10:25Speaker 2: and anoint him king over Syria. Then go to Jehu
- 10:29Speaker 2: and anoint him to be king over Israel. Then find
- 10:32Speaker 2: Elisha to replace you as my prophet. There will be
- 10:35Speaker 2: conflict ahead. Whoever flees from Hazael will be killed by Jehu,
- 10:39Speaker 2: and whoever flees from Jehu will be killed by Hazael.
- 10:43Speaker 2: In all this bloodshed, there will be 7,000 others in
- 10:46Speaker 2: Israel preserved who still love me. Elijah was elated to
- 10:50Speaker 2: be given a new task rather than stew in his
- 10:53Speaker 2: obsessive introspection. He was pleased at the Lord's plan to
- 10:57Speaker 2: use the volatility of the nations to weed out the
- 10:59Speaker 2: followers of Baal. So he went down and found the
- 11:02Speaker 2: young man known as Elisha. He was plowing his father's
- 11:06Speaker 2: fields when Elijah found him. Elijah stopped his work, put
- 11:10Speaker 2: his cloak over him, and told Elisha of all that
- 11:13Speaker 2: would take place. Elisha would follow Elijah devotedly. Together they
- 11:18Speaker 2: would witness the rise and fall of kings and the
- 11:21Speaker 2: glory of God.
- 11:24Speaker 3: In today's scripture, the prophets of Baal have been defeated
- 11:27Speaker 3: and put to death by Elijah. And when Ahab's wife, Jezebel,
- 11:32Speaker 3: hears what has happened, she is enraged. It seems clear
- 11:36Speaker 3: that while Ahab was king and title, Jezebel ruled the
- 11:41Speaker 3: kingdom and her own household. She had previously killed countless
- 11:46Speaker 3: men of God, but now this single lone prophet Elijah
- 11:50Speaker 3: has humiliated her, and she is out for his life.
- 11:55Speaker 3: So she sent word to Elijah that she would kill
- 11:57Speaker 3: him that very day. Elijah was terrified. Amazing, isn't it,
- 12:03Speaker 3: that he would be so frightened after such a great
- 12:05Speaker 3: victory when God's power came down on Mount Carmel? Elijah
- 12:10Speaker 3: is facing a very evil and crazed woman, an unhinged woman.
- 12:15Speaker 3: And she, of course, is able to make good on
- 12:17Speaker 3: her threat if she can. And in the wake of
- 12:20Speaker 3: what should have been a monumental victory and celebration for
- 12:24Speaker 3: the cause of God, things do not get better for Elijah.
- 12:28Speaker 3: In fact, they get worse. Now, this is something we
- 12:31Speaker 3: need to talk about. It's not uncommon in our lives
- 12:34Speaker 3: that after great work for the Lord is done, there
- 12:37Speaker 3: will be an enemy attack. Jesus was tempted after his
- 12:41Speaker 3: baptism by the devil, for example. And after great victories,
- 12:45Speaker 3: we sometimes face more battles. And Satan, the enemy, is
- 12:50Speaker 3: always trying to tear down what God is doing. That's
- 12:53Speaker 3: why we see here in this passage Jezebel as an
- 12:57Speaker 3: instrument of the devil trying to destroy what God was doing.
- 13:01Speaker 3: And as God's prophet, Elijah had a target on his back.
- 13:05Speaker 3: So what did he do? He ran. He ran far away.
- 13:10Speaker 3: And finally, exhausted, he stopped to rest under a broom tree.
- 13:14Speaker 3: And in his desperation, he cried out for God to
- 13:18Speaker 3: take his life and end his suffering. He's giving up.
- 13:22Speaker 3: Elijah was at the end of his rope, and he
- 13:24Speaker 3: felt like he could fight no more. He is physically exhausted,
- 13:28Speaker 3: mentally undone, and spiritually depressed. I know in life, sometimes
- 13:34Speaker 3: we face difficulties and circumstances that weigh us down. And
- 13:39Speaker 3: we become spiritually, emotionally, and physically exhausted, even depressed. That's
- 13:46Speaker 3: what happened to Elijah. But in the story of Elijah,
- 13:49Speaker 3: we find how we can find rest and restoration. God
- 13:54Speaker 3: provides for Elijah. He always has. And now he sends
- 13:58Speaker 3: an angel to feed him. Elijah eats, and then he sleeps.
- 14:03Speaker 3: Then in 1 Kings 19, verses 7 and 8, we
- 14:04Speaker 3: read these words. And the angel of the Lord came
- 14:09Speaker 3: again a second time and touched him and said, Arise
- 14:12Speaker 3: and eat, for the journey is too great for you.
- 14:15Speaker 3: And he arose and ate and drank and went in
- 14:17Speaker 3: the strength of that food forty days and forty nights
- 14:20Speaker 3: to Horeb, the mountain of God. God was certainly not
- 14:24Speaker 3: done with Elijah, and he would give him strength to
- 14:27Speaker 3: meet the responsibilities of his prophetic task. So he sustains
- 14:32Speaker 3: him with food for the long journey. He renews him
- 14:35Speaker 3: and restores him and takes him to a mountain of
- 14:37Speaker 3: where God is about to speak to his man. As
- 14:41Speaker 3: Elijah camped in a cave on Mount Horeb, God spoke
- 14:45Speaker 3: to him, asking why he was there. Why are you here, Elijah?
- 14:51Speaker 3: And Elijah replies that he's the only one, he thinks,
- 14:54Speaker 3: he is the only one who is truly following God,
- 14:58Speaker 3: that the people had rejected the Lord and killed the prophets,
- 15:00Speaker 3: and now his life is in danger. It seemed to
- 15:03Speaker 3: be just too much for Elijah. But God tells Elijah
- 15:07Speaker 3: to stand outside the cave and wait for him to speak.
- 15:11Speaker 3: First there came a great wind, then an earthquake, and
- 15:15Speaker 3: then fires in the valley below. One would expect the
- 15:18Speaker 3: thundering voice of the Almighty to boom loudly in these moments,
- 15:21Speaker 3: but there was no voice, just the noise of winds
- 15:25Speaker 3: and earthquakes and fire. Then everything became very quiet. And
- 15:30Speaker 3: in the stillness of that moment came a small voice.
- 15:35Speaker 3: The Bible describes it as a still, small voice. The
- 15:39Speaker 3: voice of God is speaking now in a whisper. And
- 15:42Speaker 3: of course, when someone is whispering, you must get very
- 15:45Speaker 3: close to hear. While God spoke quietly, the message could
- 15:50Speaker 3: not be more clear. God gave Elijah a mission again,
- 15:55Speaker 3: and that was to anoint two kings in Syria and
- 15:58Speaker 3: in Israel. He told him that war was coming to Israel.
- 16:03Speaker 3: But then he gave Elijah comfort and a commission. Elijah
- 16:06Speaker 3: was to anoint a new prophet, Elisha, who would take
- 16:10Speaker 3: Elijah's place and finish what the man of God had started. Finally,
- 16:15Speaker 3: God assured this man that there would be a remnant
- 16:18Speaker 3: in Israel which would not bow down to Baal, 7,000
- 16:22Speaker 3: who would stand for God. So how did Elijah come
- 16:27Speaker 3: out of his deep depression? How did God restore him?
- 16:30Speaker 3: He gave him a new purpose. Life must be lived
- 16:33Speaker 3: on purpose, and when you have a purpose for your life,
- 16:36Speaker 3: you are strengthened to live it. So Elijah departed just
- 16:40Speaker 3: as God told him to do and found Elisha just
- 16:43Speaker 3: as God had said he would. Together, these two prophets
- 16:47Speaker 3: would witness the Lord's doing great and mighty things. We'll
- 16:50Speaker 3: hear about that the next time. Dear God, we thank
- 16:54Speaker 3: you that when we are at our lowest, when we
- 16:57Speaker 3: are discouraged and depressed and even feeling defeated, that you
- 17:01Speaker 3: speak to us when we listen. When the enemy comes
- 17:04Speaker 3: hard against us, that the battle is yours and that
- 17:07Speaker 3: we can trust in you to give us victory. Thank
- 17:11Speaker 3: you for your plan for our lives. Thank you for
- 17:13Speaker 3: giving us a mission and a commission with others to
- 17:17Speaker 3: take the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ
- 17:20Speaker 3: to the world. Thank you that you always find us
- 17:22Speaker 3: when we're at our greatest need and bring us hope again.
