- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Kiss Breakfast. All righty. Kate Miller-Heike is joining
- 0:04Speaker 1: us live on air right now.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Of course, you can check out The Voice, 7.30pm on
- 0:09Speaker 2: 7 and 7 Plus.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Back again tonight. Hello, Kate. Hi, Mikey. How are you? Hello.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Really good.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Hey, The Voice is going off at the moment. And Nat,
- 0:20Speaker 2: you've got a question.
- 0:20Speaker 3: About The Voice.
- 0:21Speaker 4: Yeah, so last night on The Voice, Kate, the judges
- 0:23Speaker 4: learned that Tones and I had been secretly watching.
- 0:26Speaker 3: So did you guys have no idea that she was
- 0:28Speaker 3: there the whole time?
- 0:30Speaker 5: No idea whatsoever. Like, we were completely blindsided and kind
- 0:36Speaker 5: of in shock for a while, actually.
- 0:38Speaker 2: How did they do it?
- 0:39Speaker 1: Like, how did they find us?
- 0:41Speaker 5: They told us that she was hiding in a cupboard
- 0:44Speaker 5: for the whole time.
- 0:45Speaker 4: We spoke to Sonia Kruger, actually, who said they even
- 0:48Speaker 4: went as far as having code names for her, but
- 0:50Speaker 4: then Sonia said she forgot the code name.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Yeah, because Sonia knew. Yeah, Sonia knew.
- 0:54Speaker 5: Sonia knew. Right, she's so duplicitous. She's, yeah, clearly a
- 0:59Speaker 5: good liar.
- 1:00Speaker 1: But did you have, like, an inkling of who it
- 1:02Speaker 1: would be? Like, was there guesses? No, we didn't know.
- 1:05Speaker 5: We didn't know there was a secret coach full stop.
- 1:08Speaker 5: We just thought it was a regular season of The Voice,
- 1:10Speaker 5: you know, just like we've always done.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Do you feel betrayed?
- 1:15Speaker 5: No, look, I mean, at first we were shocked. But,
- 1:20Speaker 5: I mean, the thing is the blind auditions are so
- 1:22Speaker 5: much fun. And so I was kind of happy that
- 1:26Speaker 5: that part of the show was getting extended. And, you know,
- 1:30Speaker 5: we had the opportunity to have a bigger team.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Yeah, that was great.
- 1:34Speaker 4: Hey, I want to know when your chairs are facing
- 1:35Speaker 4: the other way and someone's singing, do you picture what
- 1:39Speaker 4: this person will look like in your head? Or do
- 1:41Speaker 4: you try and keep them as like a faceless person
- 1:43Speaker 4: and just focus on their talent only?
- 1:45Speaker 3: Because it'd be so hard to not think, oh, young
- 1:48Speaker 3: guy sounds attractive, blonde hair. You know what I mean?
- 1:51Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah. No, I can't help it. I totally picture
- 1:55Speaker 5: what I think they look like. And then when the
- 1:57Speaker 5: chair spins around, sometimes it's completely different.
- 2:01Speaker 4: Oh, some people's voices sound so different to what they
- 2:04Speaker 4: actually look like.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Do you ever turn it around and you go, oh,
- 2:07Speaker 2: I mean, they've got a good voice, but I don't
- 2:09Speaker 2: like the.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Look of them?
- 2:10Speaker 5: Yeah. Oh, that's a shame. No, I mean, yeah, you
- 2:16Speaker 5: sort of expect someone's voice to match their body.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:20Speaker 5: But sometimes when it's a surprise, it's kind of extra cool.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I get you. I mean, it's funny, isn't it?
- 2:26Speaker 2: Like back before like social media and the internet, you'd
- 2:29Speaker 2: listen to people on.
- 2:30Speaker 1: The radio, for example.
- 2:31Speaker 3: I have no idea.
- 2:32Speaker 1: You don't know what they look like.
- 2:34Speaker 2: And I've disappointed so many people when they've met me
- 2:37Speaker 2: in real life or seen me online.
- 2:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:39Speaker 2: And that big red button, I just want to check here.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Does it actually do something or do you hit it
- 2:44Speaker 2: and someone in a control room? I actually want to
- 2:46Speaker 2: know that too. Could you just sit in there just
- 2:49Speaker 2: hitting that button and turn around all the time?
- 2:51Speaker 1: Or is the button a fake?
- 2:52Speaker 5: No, it's real.
- 2:53Speaker 4: It's real.
- 2:54Speaker 5: Like robotics and electronics. Um, it, it breaks quite often.
- 3:00Speaker 3: It's a real button.
- 3:01Speaker 5: Yeah, no, it's all real. It's all real.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Now tell us, you've got a new album coming out
- 3:05Speaker 2: and it's been five years between albums.
- 3:08Speaker 1: How come so long?
- 3:10Speaker 5: Oh, well, you know, COVID happened and I was busy
- 3:14Speaker 5: doing a bunch of other stuff, some music theater stuff and,
- 3:17Speaker 5: and some other projects. But, um, Yeah, this record, it
- 3:21Speaker 5: just came out. It's called The Kiss and the Abyss.
- 3:23Speaker 5: And I just love it. We're on tour at the
- 3:25Speaker 5: moment and playing these new songs for people is so
- 3:28Speaker 5: much fun.
- 3:29Speaker 2: There is a track called A Certain Panic, and that
- 3:32Speaker 2: was inspired by an encounter with an influencer at the Logies.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Can you explain that?
- 3:37Speaker 5: Yeah, I met her in the queue for the toilets
- 3:41Speaker 5: at the Logies. That's the opening line of the song.
- 3:44Speaker 5: And she was, Um, you know, I actually can't remember
- 3:48Speaker 5: who she was now, but it was someone from The
- 3:50Speaker 5: Bachelor or Love Island or one of those shows. And
- 3:54Speaker 5: she just sort of, I think the Logies is a
- 3:56Speaker 5: time for, you know, a lot of DNM happen.
- 4:00Speaker 1: And, um.
- 4:02Speaker 5: She just confessed to me that, you know, she felt
- 4:05Speaker 5: so lonely and she hated being an influencer and she
- 4:08Speaker 5: hated the fact that her whole life was, you know,
- 4:10Speaker 5: she was being judged on how she looked and she
- 4:13Speaker 5: just had become like a content machine, you know, instead
- 4:17Speaker 5: of living her real life. And it was such a,
- 4:20Speaker 5: like I found it to be a really fascinating experience.
- 4:22Speaker 5: conversation and I get it you know I think I
- 4:26Speaker 5: would really struggle with that if that were me so
- 4:28Speaker 5: yeah it just inspired me to write a song about.
- 4:30Speaker 4: It when someone has a conversation with you like that
- 4:32Speaker 4: or inspires you to write a song do you immediately
- 4:34Speaker 4: kind of go back to your table at the Logies
- 4:36Speaker 4: and write in your notes like remember this you.
- 4:38Speaker 5: Do yeah Yep, yep, yep. I've got a little notebook
- 4:42Speaker 5: and I've tried to put all the juicy stuff in there. Because,
- 4:45Speaker 5: you know, my own life is not interesting enough.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Yeah, you find inspiration through other people.
- 4:50Speaker 4: And I also want to chat to you about the
- 4:51Speaker 4: fact that in 2010, you performed at Coachella.
- 4:55Speaker 3: What was that like?
- 4:56Speaker 4: Because that would be an experience that so many musicians
- 4:59Speaker 4: would die for.
- 5:00Speaker 5: Yeah, look, it was amazing. It was so cool. I
- 5:04Speaker 5: actually opened the whole festival, so... We were the first
- 5:08Speaker 5: act on and the audience was just so incredible. And
- 5:13Speaker 5: the atmosphere is amazing. And it was, you know, we
- 5:16Speaker 5: just had a great time at that festival.
- 5:17Speaker 3: How does that compare to Eurovision?
- 5:19Speaker 4: Because you also have performed at Eurovision where we watched
- 5:22Speaker 4: this year and Delta obviously performed, did really well. You
- 5:24Speaker 4: came ninth back in 2019, if I'm not wrong. What
- 5:28Speaker 4: was the crowd like at Eurovision? Because I feel as
- 5:30Speaker 4: if the Europeans sometimes don't accept that we're even in it.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Well, I still don't understand why we are, Kate. We're
- 5:36Speaker 1: nowhere near Europe. I'm very confused by it.
- 5:39Speaker 5: Look, we're in Eurovision because we love Eurovision.
- 5:42Speaker 4: Yes.
- 5:43Speaker 5: Honestly, just the vibe is that crap.
- 5:44Speaker 1: I want to be in the Olympics because I love
- 5:46Speaker 1: the Olympics.
- 5:47Speaker 5: Yeah. Look, don't ask questions, okay?
- 5:50Speaker 3: Just accept it. Yeah, yeah.
- 5:53Speaker 5: But, yeah, that was electric and, you know, I had
- 5:55Speaker 5: to perform on top of a seven-metre-high bendy pole and
- 5:58Speaker 5: I was wheeled on stage on that pole and just
- 6:01Speaker 5: the rush of, like, electricity from the crowd. I know
- 6:04Speaker 5: what you mean. Like, some of the other countries, I think,
- 6:07Speaker 5: kind of resent us being in and they will never
- 6:10Speaker 5: vote for us ever but the actual audience there um
- 6:14Speaker 5: love it i mean they love it yeah that's awesome
- 6:17Speaker 5: it was an incredible.
- 6:18Speaker 4: Experience who would you want to see at eurovision in
- 6:21Speaker 4: 2027 we've obviously just have delta you've done it guys
- 6:24Speaker 4: sebastian's done it dami im's done it uh who do
- 6:27Speaker 4: you think should be oh.
- 6:29Speaker 5: My god next year Well, look, I like the weird, wacky,
- 6:33Speaker 5: like bonkers side of Eurovision.
- 6:35Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 6:35Speaker 5: So I'd love to see someone really, you know, theatrical
- 6:41Speaker 5: and strange.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Rhonda Birchmore.
- 6:44Speaker 5: Rhonda could be amazing. I mean, a lot of people
- 6:48Speaker 5: say TISM should end.
- 6:49Speaker 1: TISM? Oh, that 90s band? Oh, God, you know them, Sean.
- 6:54Speaker 1: I do.
- 6:54Speaker 3: They're back. I've never heard of TISM.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Are they back? Yeah, they are. Oh, we're going to
- 6:58Speaker 1: play you some TISM. What's TISM mean? Can we get
- 7:01Speaker 1: some TISM up, please? Yeah, when we work out what
- 7:05Speaker 1: that is, we'll get it up for you.
- 7:07Speaker 5: Oh, there's one song.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 7:09Speaker 5: One song.
- 7:10Speaker 1: It's there for you to play. Oh, it's here now. Oh, yeah, yeah. Oh, this, yes.
- 7:14Speaker 1: I'm on the drug. I'm on the drug. I'm on
- 7:16Speaker 1: the drug. The Killed River Phoenix. I'm on the drug.
- 7:18Speaker 1: They're just a wacky Aussie band. The Killed River Phoenix.
- 7:21Speaker 3: I want to know what tism means.
- 7:24Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Is anyone else not picking it? I'm going to look
- 7:27Speaker 3: that up.
- 7:28Speaker 1: So you reckon TISM, Kate?
- 7:31Speaker 5: That's my call right now.
- 7:34Speaker 1: How do you think that.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Would go down, singing I'm on the drug that killed
- 7:37Speaker 2: River Phoenix?
- 7:39Speaker 5: Yeah, I reckon Eurovision would love them. Yeah, they're wacky.
- 7:44Speaker 5: and they're totally, you know, theatrical. Great entertainers.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Didn't they used to wear balaclavas? Is that their thing?
- 7:50Speaker 3: Still no one knows sort of who they are.
- 7:52Speaker 5: Oh, really?
- 7:52Speaker 4: So they were like the OG seer where they were
- 7:54Speaker 4: blocking their faces so they could live a normal life. Yeah, exactly.
- 7:58Speaker 5: Made for Eurovision.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Oh, love it.
- 8:00Speaker 4: Well, thank you so much for chatting to us, Kate.
- 8:02Speaker 4: Of course, The Voice continues tonight at 7.30. You can
- 8:05Speaker 4: check Kate out on there and her brand new album.
- 8:07Speaker 1: The Kiss in the Abyss is out now.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Good on you, Kate.
- 8:11Speaker 5: I'm touring as well, playing Sydney and Melbourne in September
- 8:14Speaker 5: to celebrate the release of the record.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Go and watch it. She might do a TISM cover
- 8:18Speaker 1: for you.
- 8:19Speaker 5: You never know your luck.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Thank you, Kate.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Kate Milahaki there.
