Speaker 4: for the Boys State Chairman, which begins tomorrow morning. The

Speaker 4: voice of high school sports in West Virginia, Fred Persinger,
• 2:40
Speaker 4: will join us for a preview coming up a little
• 2:42
Speaker 4: bit later on the show Today plus always a good

Speaker 4: time when this guy stops by. Senator Mike Stewart is
• 2:47
Speaker 4: here now. If he is confirmed, he will be joining
• 2:50
Speaker 4: the Trump administration. But until then, whenever that may be,
• 2:55
Speaker 4: he's got some got some things on his mind. And
• 2:57
Speaker 4: you may, based on our conversation we were texting back
• 3:02
Speaker 4: and forth the other day, you may be surprised at
• 3:04
Speaker 4: some of the things that are on Mike Stewart's mind,
• 3:06
Speaker 4: so we'll talk to him about that, plus of other
• 3:08
Speaker 4: things in the news, and your calls and text are

Speaker 4: zero zero eight. Well, we are now one week away
• 3:22
Speaker 4: from the grand experiment here Metro News Midday hosted by
• 3:26
Speaker 4: myself and from WOWK TV thirteen and Tonight Live Amanda Baron.
• 3:30
Speaker 4: The show air Noontul three, not only here in Charleston,
• 3:34
Speaker 4: but statewide via the Metro News Radio Network. At least
• 3:37
Speaker 4: parts of the show will be on Metro News TV.
• 3:40
Speaker 4: And it's kind of complicated, but due to contractual reasons,
• 3:44
Speaker 4: we won't be able to show Miss baron a Metro
• 3:47
Speaker 4: News TV, but at least the two to three o'clock
• 3:49
Speaker 4: hour will be on Metro News Television. Now we're planning
• 3:51
Speaker 4: on starting that I think next week with Coop and
• 3:55
Speaker 4: weekly on on Hotline two, also on Metro News TV.
• 4:00
Speaker 4: Exciting stuff, really, and I just want to take time
• 4:04
Speaker 4: to thank everyone at Metro News and WVRC Media for
• 4:07
Speaker 4: taking a chance on this show. I've been doing radio
• 4:11
Speaker 4: now for thirty seven years. I'm in appearances on Metro
• 4:14
Speaker 4: News and some national radio programs and TV programs, but
• 4:17
Speaker 4: never on a consistent basis, and never really a show.
• 4:21
  Speaker 3: Quite like this.
• 4:23
Speaker 4: So we've had all the meetings, we have more meetings
• 4:25
Speaker 4: coming up, and all the stuff that goes on behind
• 4:28
Speaker 4: the scenes. Now I guess we have to get to
• 4:29
Speaker 4: work and do a show. And I've had several people
• 4:32
Speaker 4: that have asked me how the show will look or
• 4:35
Speaker 4: sound or both, and I can tell you that the
• 4:39
Speaker 4: noon to one hour will be a news format show
• 4:41
Speaker 4: hosted primarily by Amanda. I will join during the second
• 4:47
Speaker 4: hour before we send her on her way down the
• 4:49
Speaker 4: street to her other job, and then I'll handle the
• 4:51
Speaker 4: two o'clock hour solo. And the way I envision this,
• 4:56
Speaker 4: the two o'clock hour is going to be your time,
• 5:00
Speaker 4: and your time will to weigh in on the subjects.
• 5:04
  Speaker 3: Of the day.
• 5:04
Speaker 4: Now, I'll I'll give a lot of my own opinions,
• 5:08
Speaker 4: just about as much as I do on this show daily,
• 5:10
Speaker 4: but I still prefer to leave the bulk of it
• 5:14
Speaker 4: up to you via the phone lines and the text.
• 5:19
Speaker 4: We will be booking guests you know on the show.
• 5:23
Speaker 4: But I really the vision of this thing is for
• 5:28
Speaker 4: it to be West Virginia's show. And again it's not
• 5:31
Speaker 4: going to be heard only here in Charleston, but the
• 5:35
Speaker 4: same show will air in places like Morgantown, Clarksburg, Martinsburg, Elkins,
• 5:39
Speaker 4: et cetera, et cetera. So please remember to put your
• 5:43
Speaker 4: teeth in and put on a bra before you call
• 5:45
Speaker 4: the show again. It starts next Monday noon till three daily,
• 5:49
Speaker 4: replacing Dan Bongino, who is off to join the Trump administration.
• 5:52
Speaker 4: We are excited about it, Big Pigli Wigley Hotline three

• 6:11
  Speaker 4: Visit Bridge Valley, dot E d U. I do want
• 6:14
Speaker 4: to put this out there. Over the weekend, we lost
• 6:19
Speaker 4: a former member of the radio ranch here the family
• 6:22
Speaker 4: here at eleven eleven. Mike Fitzgerald was heard for several
• 6:26
Speaker 4: years on our sister station ninety six one KWUS, most
• 6:30
Speaker 4: notably part of the morning show with Miss Amanda, not
• 6:34
Speaker 4: Amanda Baron, but the other Amanda when the station was
• 6:37
Speaker 4: known as The Wolf. Mike had a litany of health
• 6:41
Speaker 4: issues and he passed away Saturday in Florida. That's according
• 6:44
Speaker 4: to his daughter. And I'll say this, Mike was a
• 6:47
Speaker 4: true radio guy. He had worked at several places up
• 6:51
Speaker 4: and down the radio dial of America. He and I
• 6:54
Speaker 4: never worked together, but certainly knew each other well and
• 6:59
Speaker 4: became really good friends. We worked several events together, but
• 7:02
Speaker 4: never worked under the same company umbrella at the same time.
• 7:06
Speaker 4: But I was thinking about this yesterday. I can remember
• 7:11
Speaker 4: one particular day that really sticks out to me. And
• 7:16
Speaker 4: you may remember, if you go back to sometime two
• 7:19
Speaker 4: thousand and eight, two thousand and maybe through eleven or twelve,
• 7:22
Speaker 4: something like that, that Massy the Massy Cole Company CEO
• 7:26
Speaker 4: Don Blankenship used to have this big party, a huge
• 7:31
Speaker 4: event on twenty two Mountain, which straddles both Mingo and
• 7:35
Speaker 4: Logan Counties. Now, Don brought in all the big names
• 7:40
Speaker 4: for his employees and their families. I'm talking about folks
• 7:42
Speaker 4: like Hank Williams, Junior, and Ted Nugitt and Toby Keith
• 7:45
Speaker 4: at late Toby Keith and even brought Sean Hannity in
• 7:48
Speaker 4: one year. Don was not shy about spending money to
• 7:52
Speaker 4: advertise this event either, so mister Blankenship bought time and
• 7:58
Speaker 4: he bought live podcast from every radio and television station
• 8:02
Speaker 4: around from Charleston to Huntington, Williamson, Pikeville, Beckley, Bluefield.
• 8:07
Speaker 5: We were all there at.
• 8:08
Speaker 4: The same time, and I guess the statute of limitations
• 8:12
Speaker 4: has run out, so I can tell this story now
• 8:16
Speaker 4: if you're familiar at all with this, Well, the area
• 8:19
Speaker 4: that was known as twenty two Mountain is a big
• 8:21
Speaker 4: old place. I mean, it probably stretches thirty miles, you know,
• 8:26
Speaker 4: as I said, and it kind of darts in and
• 8:28
Speaker 4: out between Logan and Mingo Counties. So, as I said,
• 8:32
Speaker 4: we were all up there, and when you have that
• 8:34
Speaker 4: many radio and television stations up there, space can be
• 8:39
Speaker 4: an issue. So they asked some of us to try
• 8:42
Speaker 4: to carpool if we could. Now, I was working at
• 8:44
Speaker 4: the time at WVW Radio and Logan, and you know,
• 8:49
Speaker 4: it really wasn't a big deal for me up there.
• 8:53
Speaker 4: I left my car in the community of Omar, and
• 8:57
Speaker 4: I caught a ride up the mountain with a buddy
• 9:00
Speaker 4: of mine who actually worked at Massey, and I figure,
• 9:03
Speaker 4: I know everybody in southern West Virginia. When it's time
• 9:06
Speaker 4: to come off the mountain, I'll catch a ride with
• 9:07
Speaker 4: somebody back to pick up my car to cut to
• 9:11
Speaker 4: the chase. End of the day comes and I'm looking
• 9:14
Speaker 4: around at this motley crew of radio people, and there
• 9:19
Speaker 4: were three of us standing there together. It was myself,
• 9:26
Speaker 4: Mike Fitzgerald and the late Al Woody from Crosstown WQBE,
• 9:33
Speaker 4: and with some folks up there. Some alcohol may or
• 9:38
Speaker 4: may not have been involved, and I remember that whoever
• 9:44
Speaker 4: that Al Woody was riding with in their station van
• 9:47
Speaker 4: had left. So here we are, Mike, myself, Al Woody
• 9:52
Speaker 4: all on this mountain. And you have to keep in
• 9:55
Speaker 4: mind that Al and Mike and their stations were big
• 9:58
Speaker 4: time competitors the time here in the Charleston market. Now,
• 10:02
Speaker 4: when I was at WVW, our biggest competition was from
• 10:05
Speaker 4: Williamston and Pikeville in places like that. So for me,
• 10:08
Speaker 4: hanging out with Mike or Al was really not that
• 10:10
Speaker 4: big a deal, but apparently it was for them, especially
• 10:15
Speaker 4: had their respective station managers, programmers and whatnot found all
• 10:20
Speaker 4: this out. So Mike offers to drive me and al
• 10:25
Speaker 4: Woody off the mountain. So we all pile into what
• 10:30
Speaker 4: was then the Wolf Radio station truck, which I think
• 10:34
Speaker 4: is still the truck we're driving today for our sister
• 10:36
Speaker 4: Dation ninety eight to seven.
• 10:37
  Speaker 3: Of the mountain.
• 10:38
Speaker 4: It's been wrapped and re wrapped a couple of times.
• 10:41
Speaker 4: So away we go. Mike Fitzgerald, ol Woody, and Me
• 10:46
Speaker 4: and IW only had to get to Logan because, as
• 10:50
Speaker 4: many of you may know this about the late Owl,
• 10:53
Speaker 4: he had a variety of side hustles and he was
• 10:55
Speaker 4: working the night shift at Loew's of Logan at the time,
• 10:58
Speaker 4: then getting up the next morning to do the morning
• 11:02
Speaker 4: show on WQBE. And somehow we all made it off
• 11:07
Speaker 4: that mountain and had a whole lot of good stories
• 11:10
Speaker 4: on the way down. All of course passed away a
• 11:12
Speaker 4: couple of years ago. Now we lost Mike over the weekend,
• 11:15
Speaker 4: so our thoughts and prayer certainly go out to Mike
• 11:18
Speaker 4: and his family passed away in Florida. He was one
• 11:21
Speaker 4: of a kind, to say the least. But Dave Island

• 12:06
Speaker 4: Let me knock out a couple of texts here before
• 12:08
Speaker 4: we go to break Texas Day. Thanks for having Mike
• 12:10
Speaker 4: Pushkin on Friday. Well, yeah, Texas, I really hope that
• 12:17
Speaker 4: Democrat Pushkin is paying for his time on your radio station. Well,
• 12:21
Speaker 4: I mean, Mike is the state Democratic Party chair and
• 12:24
Speaker 4: he is uh, he represents this area, so no, he
• 12:27
Speaker 4: does not. None of my guests are paid to appear
• 12:31
Speaker 4: on the show. I'm barely paid to appear on the show.
• 12:36
  Speaker 3: Okay.
• 12:38
Speaker 4: Text says, while you keep going after Dave Allen, much
• 12:40
Speaker 4: of what you say about him is actually true. You
• 12:43
Speaker 4: have to give it to him that he was smart
• 12:44
Speaker 4: enough to partner with the very talented Amanda Baron on
• 12:47
Speaker 4: the new midday show. That show will be a huge
• 12:49
Speaker 4: improvement from what we currently see on Metro News TV.
• 12:53
Speaker 4: I don't know who that was named after him, Dave,
• 13:01
Speaker 4: you're a veteran supporter. Did you hear about the West
• 13:03

• 13:06
Speaker 4: taken down by the Pentagon and replaced with a four
• 13:09

• 13:12
Speaker 4: some uproar from our federal delegation. If not, I'm pretty
• 13:14
Speaker 4: sure I know the reason why, says a Texter Texas
• 13:20
Speaker 4: Mike Stewart's confirmation. For the sake of West Virginia cannots
• 13:22
Speaker 4: come soon enough, we'll talked about Mike to Mike about
• 13:26
Speaker 4: that what he's allowed to talk about covered up a
• 13:28
Speaker 4: little bit later on the show, I say, because you know,
• 13:30
Speaker 4: there could be things he's not allowed.
• 13:32
  Speaker 3: To talk about.
• 13:33
Speaker 4: So he can talk about what's going on the legislature though,

• 16:20
Speaker 4: state champions. The man who called a lot of that
• 16:21
Speaker 4: action and who will again call the action this week
• 16:24
Speaker 4: is the Voice of high school Sports in West Virginia
• 16:27
Speaker 4: front person, and he joins, is now Fred, good morning,
• 16:29
Speaker 4: welcome to the show.
• 16:30
Speaker 5: Good morning. I'm sorry, good morning.
• 16:33
Speaker 4: Voice hasn't gone yet, not probably will by the end
• 16:35
Speaker 4: of next week. So you did the Mountain East tournament
• 16:38
Speaker 4: a couple of weeks ago, and then you drove they
• 16:40
Speaker 4: had the meetings in Parkersburg, and then you did the
• 16:43
Speaker 4: girls tournament this week, and then you rent and repeat
• 16:46
Speaker 4: as they say, because you had to go back to
• 16:48
Speaker 4: Parkersburg yesterday, and how you go to do the boys
• 16:51
Speaker 4: state basketball tournament as well.
• 16:53
Speaker 5: It's a wonderful time of the year, isn't it.
• 16:54
Speaker 4: It is really like you said to me earlier. I
• 16:57
Speaker 4: took my head in your office before we far would
• 17:00
Speaker 4: on the air, and I suck my head in and
• 17:01
Speaker 4: I said, are you tired getting And you said, well,
• 17:03
Speaker 4: I've done this before I have, so you kind of
• 17:05
Speaker 4: train yourself, I guess, to get ready for these marathon
• 17:07
  Speaker 4: days right now.
• 17:08
Speaker 5: You know, I think if you're doing something that you
• 17:10
Speaker 5: really enjoy, you don't think about it. I honestly no exaggeration.
• 17:15
Speaker 5: I get to the coliseum here in Charleston during the
• 17:19
Speaker 5: tournament Tuesday through Saturday by seven fifteen every morning, and
• 17:24
  Speaker 5: I don't leave until eleven o'clock that night. I mean,
• 17:26
  Speaker 5: I don't go outside. I don't that's it.
• 17:29
  Speaker 3: I don't know what it's doing outside.
• 17:30
Speaker 5: No idea to be doing anything before we.
• 17:32
Speaker 4: Get in to the state tournament. Since everybody else is
• 17:35
Speaker 4: been weighing in on this, and I know it's going
• 17:37
Speaker 4: to be talked about in detail on Metro News talk
• 17:40
Speaker 4: Line with Wilson Meadows today, what do you think about
• 17:42
Speaker 4: WVU not making the NCAA tournament?
• 17:45
Speaker 5: You know, really, I think in retrospect as to who
• 17:49
Speaker 5: knocked them out of the tournament, that's hard to believe.
• 17:52
Speaker 5: It name wins North Carolina is a name I don't
• 17:55
Speaker 5: have any tournaments they've been through at a Row one
• 17:57
Speaker 5: hundred and thirty seven or whatever it was. But honestly,
• 18:01
Speaker 5: West Virginia could have done themselves right by beating Colorado.
• 18:06
Speaker 5: Maybe Big Colorado, you're in Okay. Maybe not though maybe
• 18:09
Speaker 5: not because there was another scenario in there, because if
• 18:12
Speaker 5: UAB and Memphis and all that nonsense, it had it.
• 18:15
Speaker 5: But again, you got to take care of business. I thought,
• 18:19
Speaker 5: here's the problem. One hundred and eleven brackets for the
• 18:24
Speaker 5: you know, Joe Lenardi and Ciba and all the other
• 18:26
Speaker 5: stuff they do. One hundred and eleven out of one
• 18:28
Speaker 5: hundred and eleven had West Virginia in. So I think
• 18:32
Speaker 5: Mounted Deer fans were thinking, Okay, we're in. No, don't
• 18:34
Speaker 5: worry about it. You know they're in, and then all
• 18:35
  Speaker 5: of a sudden, you're not in. And that's that's a
• 18:38
Speaker 5: tough pill to swallow, you know, he who knows it's
• 18:42
  Speaker 5: a crazy, crazy world. I don't know what they're going
• 18:44
Speaker 5: to do. I know they're not in the n It
• 18:46
Speaker 5: that's already been pushed out bread or heard or something
• 18:50
Speaker 5: that the Big twelve is tractually obligated to do this
• 18:55
Speaker 5: Vegas tournament of sixteen teams. And if that's the case,
• 19:00
Speaker 5: West Virginia maybe in that. I don't know.
• 19:01
Speaker 4: But the women's team is in the NCAA tournament. So
• 19:04
Speaker 4: see a lot of folks will be turning their attention
• 19:06
  Speaker 4: that way.
• 19:06
Speaker 5: And it's close. They can travel to watch the Mountains play.
• 19:09
Speaker 5: So and that's oddly enough.
• 19:11
Speaker 4: Oddly enough to Carolina, Yeah, I love that. You can't
• 19:15
Speaker 4: write this stuff all right, So let's talk about the girls.
• 19:17
Speaker 4: Tournament over the weekend, four champions work Crown was that
• 19:20
Speaker 4: everything you thought it would be. Any surprises, standout performances, Oh.
• 19:24
Speaker 5: There are a lot of standout performances, no question. And
• 19:27
Speaker 5: uh you know the the fourth championship games were all
• 19:31
Speaker 5: all right, here we go, Fred the horrible. They were horrible.
• 19:35
Speaker 5: I mean from the fat oddly.
• 19:36
Speaker 4: Enough, oddly enough, you're a good friend of mine. Speedy
• 19:38
Speaker 4: Bevans and I were having coffee this morning and he said,
• 19:41
Speaker 4: the Speedy will be on the state and the boys tournament.
• 19:43
Speaker 4: Speedy said the same thing.
• 19:44
Speaker 5: Yeah, it was just not it was not It was
• 19:46
Speaker 5: great basketball, but it was in good basketball to watch,
• 19:48
Speaker 5: if you know what I mean. Yeah, Uh, you know
• 19:50
Speaker 5: the winners they played extremely well. The losers they did
• 19:53
Speaker 5: what they had to do to lose. They did it well.
• 19:56
Speaker 5: Uh so I think the boys will be better. I
• 19:59
Speaker 5: hope so. And again I'm a firm. I've said it
• 20:03
Speaker 5: thousands of times. West Virginia doesn't need four classes and
• 20:07
Speaker 5: this is what you get. And somebody said, well, but
• 20:10
Speaker 5: you know they're here. Okay, fine. The last memory, if
• 20:13
Speaker 5: I'm a senior, the last memory I have in my
• 20:15
Speaker 5: high school career getting beat to death. I don't want
• 20:18
  Speaker 5: that much. Yeah, I don't want it. I don't care
• 20:20
Speaker 5: where it happens. I don't want it. So West Virginia
• 20:23
Speaker 5: is not a state large enough or have four teams
• 20:25
Speaker 5: or four classes in any sport. We're just not accept it.
• 20:29
Speaker 5: And don't say it's everybody gets a trophy thing that
• 20:33
  Speaker 5: I don't like. I just don't care for it. I
• 20:35
Speaker 5: don't think that's the way you do it. I think
• 20:37
Speaker 5: we lost a lot when we went to the new
• 20:40
Speaker 5: regional formats where the sectional tournaments were fun. I mean,
• 20:43
Speaker 5: that was exciting time for all schools. Now they're gone.
• 20:46
Speaker 5: Now you're a part of a whatever number of teams
• 20:49
Speaker 5: are in your region, and that varies from region to region.
• 20:52
Speaker 5: It was just like I was talking Rick Green from George, Washington.
• 20:56
Speaker 5: He's in there, his team is in a third seed
• 20:59
Speaker 5: and deservedly so, and he was saying, you know, I
• 21:02
Speaker 5: had to beat one team to get to the state tournament.
• 21:06
Speaker 5: That's what's wrong with that. A lot of things, he said,
• 21:09
Speaker 5: a lot of things is wrong with that. So this
• 21:11
Speaker 5: system that they put into place this year not good.
• 21:14
Speaker 5: I don't know if they're going to change it, but
• 21:16
Speaker 5: that's up to the principles and folks that be like that,
• 21:20
Speaker 5: not the SSAC. Okay, don't get on them. It's up
• 21:23
Speaker 5: to the principles. They make the rules, all right.
• 21:25
Speaker 4: So let's get to the boys tournaments. Top seeds.
• 21:29
Speaker 5: Oh yeah, you know Class A, tug Valley, Class Double A,
• 21:32
Speaker 5: Williamstown Class Triple A, the top seed is Bridgeport, and
• 21:36
Speaker 5: in Class Quada the top seed is spring Mills. Now,
• 21:39
Speaker 5: last week I said I thought Triple A was the
• 21:42
Speaker 5: toughest bracket in the girls. I think QUAUDA is certainly
• 21:45
Speaker 5: the toughest bracket in the boys tournament, coming up one
• 21:48
Speaker 5: through honestly one through eight, and I'm not exaggerating. I
• 21:52
Speaker 5: think one through eight could win it, and of course
• 21:54
Speaker 5: only one will. And certainly Spring Mills is the team
• 21:57
Speaker 5: to beat. Right now, how about spring Mills and Martinsburg.
• 22:02
Speaker 5: They are in the same town almost of them, and
• 22:05
Speaker 5: I have to travel three hundreds of miles to play.
• 22:07
Speaker 5: We could do this up there, Yeah, two weeks ago
• 22:10
Speaker 5: we could have done So that's but you know, there's
• 22:12
Speaker 5: going to be some good matches. I think Spring Valley
• 22:14
Speaker 5: and Beckley will be good. I think Morgantown, Parkersburg South,
• 22:17
Speaker 5: Mike Fallon is the head coach of Parkersburg South, a
• 22:19
Speaker 5: great coach and certainly well I know what Dave Tallman's doing.
• 22:22
Speaker 5: I think a good note too. Dave Tauman from Martin's
• 22:25
Speaker 5: or Morgantown is in and Dave Tallman, his dad from
• 22:30
Speaker 5: Magnolia is in and they it happened twenty five years ago.
• 22:34
Speaker 3: I was going to say, has that happened before?
• 22:36
Speaker 5: Well, when Dave Tollman played for Dave Thomas as a player,
• 22:40
Speaker 5: So that that's a great story and hopefully we'll do
• 22:42
Speaker 5: a story on that on the network, and I'm sure
• 22:44
Speaker 5: we will. But now there's a lot of good storylines.
• 22:47
Speaker 5: You know, when you look at at Single A Tech,
• 22:49
Speaker 5: Valley's a very good team. I've seen them play. Tucker
• 22:52
Speaker 5: County is always around. They're that blue collar type of
• 22:56
Speaker 5: team that's you love to watch play. They're the two
• 22:59
Speaker 5: seed in Class Double A Williamstown's I mentioned the one seed,
• 23:02
Speaker 5: the two seed willing Central Catholic. If those two teams
• 23:05
Speaker 5: are gonna make it out, I think they'd be a
• 23:06
Speaker 5: half a game. Bridgeport, I think, honestly is a solid
• 23:10
Speaker 5: solid number one. I will be surprised if anyone really
• 23:13
Speaker 5: gives them any troll. Maybe maybe Shady and Shady will
• 23:17
Speaker 5: only meet them if they get to the championship game goes.
• 23:19
Speaker 5: They're in two different brackets, you know. And Fairmont senior
• 23:22
Speaker 5: Dave rettin his team is back. He's a four seed.
• 23:25
Speaker 5: He could meet Bridgeport in the semi finals if he
• 23:28
Speaker 5: beats Chapmanville. But Brad Nappery, you know, Chapmanville Tigers are
• 23:32
Speaker 5: always fun to watch. Yeah, we'll see what happens there.
• 23:35
Speaker 5: But you know, I think it's going to be a
• 23:37
Speaker 5: great tournament. Starts tomorrow morning, bright and early at nine
• 23:39
Speaker 5: thirty with the Class Single A teams getting no no, no,
• 23:44
Speaker 5: whoa whoa WOA with the Class Triple A teams. That's
• 23:48
Speaker 5: what is. Triple A plays mostly Tomorrow or tomorrow sandwich
• 23:52
Speaker 5: in with a couple of quality games, and it's a
• 23:55
Speaker 5: strange scheduling, but it inter rotates every year, so I
• 23:58
Speaker 5: guess it's fair for everyone to get you know, for
• 24:00
Speaker 5: tripa A. For example, if you went on Tuesday morning
• 24:03
Speaker 5: at nine thirty, you won't play again until Friday at ninth.
• 24:08
Speaker 4: And as a coach, how do you feel about that?
• 24:10
Speaker 4: I mean, if you're a coach, I mean you got that.
• 24:12
Speaker 4: You come off that win, and then you got it.
• 24:14
Speaker 4: You're thinking, I don't play until practically next week.
• 24:17
Speaker 5: But it's about the same shield you have in regular
• 24:20
  Speaker 5: season Tuesday Fridays.
• 24:22
  Speaker 10: Point.
• 24:22
Speaker 5: Here's the deal, though, if you're a team that is close,
• 24:26
Speaker 5: you just go back home. Kids probably go to school,
• 24:29
Speaker 5: sleep in their own beds, do the thing you practice,
• 24:31
Speaker 5: just like a normal regular season week. But how about
• 24:34
Speaker 5: a team like, let's use the farthest team away. Well, wow,
• 24:38
Speaker 5: they're kind of lucky. I guess the farthest team away
• 24:41
Speaker 5: is Elkins. Do you take your kids all the way
• 24:43
Speaker 5: back to Elkins just to return if you win? Or
• 24:46
Speaker 5: do you wrestle with them in a hotel for three days?
• 24:50
  Speaker 5: I don't know, So that's a I guess that's a
• 24:52
Speaker 5: decision the coaches get to make. But yeah, it's a
• 24:55
Speaker 5: it's a fun week. It's really no question about it.
• 24:57
  Speaker 5: It's a it's a great way to wrap up the
• 25:00
Speaker 5: high school football basketball season rather and I'm sure we'll
• 25:04
Speaker 5: have some good games. I'm looking forward to a number
• 25:06
Speaker 5: of games on this schedule. So you know, thirty two
• 25:10
Speaker 5: teams are down and we'll see what four go home
• 25:13
Speaker 5: with the big trophy.
• 25:14
Speaker 4: Give me one if you're looking at your sheet, there
• 25:17
Speaker 4: at one game that sticks out to you, as this
• 25:20
Speaker 4: is whether you're calling the game or not with the
• 25:22
Speaker 4: one that is most intriguing to you. Is there one
• 25:26
Speaker 4: may or maybe I'll follow that up by saying, or
• 25:28
Speaker 4: a certain player that you are really looking forward to seeing.
• 25:31
Speaker 5: Now, you know, there's a lot of great players, so
• 25:33
Speaker 5: I don't really go down to players exactly right. But
• 25:37
Speaker 5: the game, and I'm actually on the call of the
• 25:39
Speaker 5: game is Wednesday night at nine o'clock in Spring Valley
• 25:42
Speaker 5: and Beckley. I think that will be a great, great game,
• 25:46
Speaker 5: and both teams are very good. Both teams are solid,
• 25:49
Speaker 5: Both teams have everything you need as far as height
• 25:51
Speaker 5: and speed, and they both play mostly alike, you know,
• 25:55
Speaker 5: in your face defense and that kind of thing. So
• 25:57
  Speaker 5: I think that's going to be a great game. That's
• 25:59
Speaker 5: in quite a if you look at each class real quick,
• 26:01
Speaker 5: if you look at each class, I think Nitro and
• 26:03
Speaker 5: Ripley is going to be a good game that comes
• 26:05
Speaker 5: up on Wednesday morning at eleven to fifteen and Class
• 26:08
Speaker 5: single A. I think the best game in the first
• 26:10
Speaker 5: class is probably going to be the last game Thursday
• 26:15
Speaker 5: night at nine Greater Beckley Christian and Saint Joseph Central
• 26:18
Speaker 5: hunting to private schools going after one another that really
• 26:22
Speaker 5: have a good pedigree of players and they they're always
• 26:26
Speaker 5: it has It's been a while since Saint Joseph Central's
• 26:28
Speaker 5: boys team has been there, so looking forward to seeing
• 26:30
Speaker 5: them and then I think in Class Double A, if
• 26:33
Speaker 5: we can get out to the if both these teams
• 26:36
Speaker 5: get to the semi finals, West Side and Wheeling Central,
• 26:39
Speaker 5: should be a heck of a ball game, all right Now,
• 26:42
Speaker 5: the EU Logan Wildcats, they play Tuesday Morning or Tuesday
• 26:46
Speaker 5: night brother at nine o'clock and they get Wyoming East.
• 26:49
Speaker 5: I think they're split in their three season two Yes,
• 26:51
Speaker 5: they did so very familiar with each other and that's
• 26:53
  Speaker 5: a that's a good thing as well.
• 26:55
Speaker 4: All right, Fred, We will be listening of course, the
• 26:57
Speaker 4: daytime Action locally on Charleston's ESPN Radio, Nighttime Action WCCHS,
• 27:03
Speaker 4: and of course all four championship games will be on
• 27:04
Speaker 4: Metro News TV. Great time to remind you if you
• 27:06
Speaker 4: have a done so already download that app read well.
• 27:09
Speaker 4: I'll leave you alone next Monday, I promise, Okay, I'll.
• 27:12
Speaker 5: Come in just say hey, you know what the tournament. Yeah,
• 27:14
  Speaker 5: there you go.
• 27:16
Speaker 4: All right, Fred person and the boice of high school

• 27:24
Speaker 4: plug in for my alma mater, Logan Wildcats. All right, uh,
• 27:28
Speaker 4: Tex says there were a lot of people on Twitter
• 27:30
Speaker 4: who are not Mountaineer fans or ticked at North Carolina
• 27:33
Speaker 4: was gifted a spot, even the host of sirius XM
• 27:36
Speaker 4: College Sports Radio or angry. Yeah, I saw a lot
• 27:38
Speaker 4: of that too, Tex says. Talking about basketball, Morrissey is
• 27:41
Speaker 4: wanting to sue to get WVU a tournament spots.
• 27:44
  Speaker 2: What are they?
• 27:44
Speaker 4: A DEI team? I thought we were about meritocracy in
• 27:48
Speaker 4: this state. WVU season didn't merit a tournament spot. Also,
• 27:52
Speaker 4: Morrissey has only one move, Sue Sue, Sue. Can we

• 28:50
Speaker 11: way too far. They're pushing a van on safe ingredients
• 28:54
Speaker 11: in our grocery stores. That ban would jack up prices
• 28:57
Speaker 11: on almost everything we buy. Banning these types of ingredients
• 29:01
Speaker 11: would eliminate sixty percent of the food on grocery shelves,
• 29:04
Speaker 11: hiking prices even more when we're already struggling. Worse, it

Speaker 11: would cost thousands of jobs all across West Virginia. Governor

• 30:31
Speaker 4: Stewart is here. Good morning, sir, Hey, good morning, Thanks
• 30:34
Speaker 4: for having me, Thank you for being here. I'm gonna
• 30:37
Speaker 4: go ahead start with this and say, if this seems
• 30:39
Speaker 4: to be on everybody's mind over the last twelve hours
• 30:43
Speaker 4: or so, go ahead and weigh in on WVU not
• 30:45
Speaker 4: making the NCAA basketball tam.
• 30:47
Speaker 3: Well, it's a travesty, of course.
• 30:49
Speaker 12: And unlike everybody else, I was really upset by this,
• 30:53
Speaker 12: even more so that the University of North Carolina seems
• 30:56
Speaker 12: to be the team that replaced us in pure metrics.
• 30:59
Speaker 12: We'd like to think it's based off merit, right, but
• 31:02
Speaker 12: this clearly wasn't based off merit. But when you lose
• 31:05
Speaker 12: to a number sixteen seed in the tournament, you introduce doubt.
• 31:11
Speaker 12: And when you introduce doubt, schools like West Virginia get
• 31:14
Speaker 12: cut out. And so next time, what I'd say is
• 31:16
Speaker 12: we got to we gotta win those games against the
• 31:18
Speaker 12: number sixteen seeds and finish our business. But I think
• 31:22
Speaker 12: we could have done some damage in this tournament. It's terrible.
• 31:25
Speaker 4: I'm gonna give a really unpopular opinion here real quick,
• 31:27
Speaker 4: and we'll move on. First of all, let me say
• 31:29
Speaker 4: I'm one hundred percent thinking that WVU should have been
• 31:32
Speaker 4: in the Big Dance, no doubt about it.
• 31:34
  Speaker 3: I get it.
• 31:34
Speaker 4: People are frustrated, and I think they have every right
• 31:37
Speaker 4: to be. However, I think sometimes people forget that college athletics,
• 31:41
Speaker 4: like it or not, is a big business and it's
• 31:44
Speaker 4: all about butts in the seats, and it's all about ratings,
• 31:47
Speaker 4: et cetera. As bad as we don't want to think,
• 31:48
Speaker 4: it's true. In West Virginia, many people would say we're
• 31:51
Speaker 4: probably not the national draw, that North Carolina is.
• 31:55
Speaker 12: Well, well, well let me cut let me cut you
• 31:56
Speaker 12: off here, though, because the big twelve we've got in
• 32:00
  Speaker 12: college athletics.
• 32:02
Speaker 3: This is unfortunate. What's happened.
• 32:03
Speaker 12: I was one of those kids that grew up I
• 32:05
Speaker 12: love college athletics. I love college basketball, college football. But
• 32:09
Speaker 12: what has happened the professionalization of college athletics is turning
• 32:14
Speaker 12: people off. When you get the SEC and the Big
• 32:17
Speaker 12: ten getting all the dollars, getting all the television time.
• 32:22
Speaker 12: You take great programs like those teams in the Big twelve,
• 32:25
Speaker 12: a lot of other programs.
• 32:26
  Speaker 3: Just like us.
• 32:27
Speaker 12: We're not competing on a level playing field, not at all.
• 32:31
Speaker 12: And I acknowledge that fact. But when fourteen teams out
• 32:35
Speaker 12: of the SEC make the tournament, and I know this
• 32:38
Speaker 12: is not a sports show, there's a problem with it.
• 32:41
  Speaker 3: Though.
• 32:41
Speaker 12: There's a problem when when marginal, not so good teams
• 32:45
Speaker 12: in the SEC are making it over good teams that competed,
• 32:49
Speaker 12: like West Virginia. But it's not just I don't think
• 32:52
  Speaker 12: it's a problem of this tournament. It's a problem with
• 32:54
Speaker 12: college athletics. They are turning off places like West Virginia
• 32:58
Speaker 12: to the current state of disa disaster of college athletics
• 33:02
  Speaker 12: in America.
• 33:03
Speaker 4: We had a text here somebody sent me a tweet
• 33:04
Speaker 4: from the Voice of Morgantown that said, not sure if
• 33:06
Speaker 4: there's ever been a more clear cut case of corruption
• 33:09
Speaker 4: in college athletics, why or athletic directors making these decisions.
• 33:12
Speaker 4: What's clear now is that Bubba Cunningham just made one
• 33:14
Speaker 4: hundred thousand dollars at West Virginia's expense because he of
• 33:17
Speaker 4: course with North Carolina and got to get a little
• 33:20
Speaker 4: bit of a bonus there. All right, So did you
• 33:22
Speaker 4: have to do check out my day viatorial over the weekend,
• 33:25
Speaker 4: Kim or me and tell me you did.
• 33:27
Speaker 3: I did? I did, tell me what it's all right?
• 33:29
Speaker 4: So basically I said, I said, Mike, I said, and
• 33:31
Speaker 4: I knew that your guy that will that will discuss
• 33:34
Speaker 4: this with me. I said, I remember a time where
• 33:36
Speaker 4: Republicans were all about smaller government, and it seems to
• 33:41
Speaker 4: me that many, many not all, want government more involved
• 33:47
  Speaker 4: in their lives.
• 33:49
Speaker 3: And I mean, maybe.
• 33:50
Speaker 4: It's more on well there's some here, but it's also
• 33:53
Speaker 4: some other national front as well, going after free speech
• 33:56
Speaker 4: and things of that nature. A lot of folks on
• 33:58
Speaker 4: the GOP that i'll call it for big government on
• 34:01
Speaker 4: a lot of things, Mike, when they know they didn't
• 34:04
Speaker 4: want it all those years before.
• 34:05
Speaker 12: Well, listen, you've asked a question that we could spend
• 34:08
  Speaker 12: hours talking about.
• 34:10
Speaker 3: I talk about this all the time.
• 34:11
Speaker 12: I try to be intellectually consistent with my views here.
• 34:14
Speaker 12: I believe in smaller government. I believe in people. If
• 34:17
Speaker 12: you look at the bills I'm sponsoring most of them
• 34:20
Speaker 12: are about people, and especially kids and families. But I
• 34:25
Speaker 12: think there's something to what you're saying, which is that
• 34:27
Speaker 12: we have two parties within the Republican Party today. We
• 34:31
Speaker 12: have the traditional small government government which does the least,
• 34:36
Speaker 12: does best, and then we have the other group of
• 34:39
Speaker 12: Republicans that are really the old Democrat party that seem
• 34:42
Speaker 12: to think that bigger government, government doing everything for everybody,
• 34:47
Speaker 12: is the way we should be doing things. And so
• 34:48
Speaker 12: I fall into the first camp. I believe that government
• 34:51
Speaker 12: which does not more than it's supposed to do and
• 34:54
Speaker 12: empowers people's probably the best government we could have. But
• 34:57
  Speaker 12: I don't disagree with you.
• 34:58
Speaker 4: So we're a day thirty. I believe in the legislative session,
• 35:02
Speaker 4: and to be honest, Senator, not a lot of bills
• 35:04
  Speaker 4: being passed.
• 35:06
Speaker 12: Well, I think there's a lot of bills being passed,
• 35:07
Speaker 12: but there's nothing that I think your listeners could say
• 35:10
Speaker 12: mean a whole lot to putting more food on the table,
• 35:13
Speaker 12: or fixing the roof, or getting their kids through school
• 35:17
Speaker 12: with better test scores. And so I appreciate that frustration,
• 35:22
Speaker 12: and so I think this session, you have these sessions periodically,
• 35:26
Speaker 12: We've got a brand new governor still getting his sea
• 35:29
Speaker 12: legs from becoming governor. That's a different role than being
• 35:32
Speaker 12: Attorney general. I think he's doing a good job trying
• 35:35
Speaker 12: to figure out how all of the pieces work together.
• 35:38
Speaker 12: And then we have ten new members in the state
• 35:40
Speaker 12: Senate out of thirty four members. Ten that's a huge
• 35:43
Speaker 12: percentage of folks learning how to be state senators. And
• 35:46
Speaker 12: over on the House of Delegate side, another huge turnover.
• 35:50
Speaker 12: And so I think you'll see some good stuff come
• 35:52
Speaker 12: out of this session. But we pass some huge bills
• 35:55
Speaker 12: over the past few years taking down taxes in massive
• 35:58
Speaker 12: ways that I think you can't do that every single year.
• 36:02
Speaker 12: You've got to have some revenue come in the door.
• 36:03
Speaker 12: But keep in mind there are some big issues coming
• 36:06
Speaker 12: out of this session. Child welfare, I believe, is the
• 36:08
Speaker 12: number to me, and I think to many of the
• 36:11
Speaker 12: people listening to your show, child welfare. The crisis we
• 36:15
Speaker 12: have in child welfare in West Virginia to me is
• 36:17
Speaker 12: number one. It is the intersection and bullseye of both
• 36:21
Speaker 12: the economy and those social issues that we care about.
• 36:25
Speaker 12: And when you have federal judges and state judges and
• 36:28
Speaker 12: people in the system saying the foster care system our
• 36:31
Speaker 12: CPS system and the court system don't work together. It's broken.
• 36:35
Speaker 12: We got a problem, right. This should be a red
• 36:38
Speaker 12: red flag SOS going out to all West Virginians. We
• 36:42
Speaker 12: had a bill in my committee. We brought the Secretary
• 36:46
Speaker 12: of the Department of Human Services in. We offered help.
• 36:50
Speaker 12: The response we got back was thanks, but no thanks.
• 36:54
Speaker 12: We can do this on our own. But I've heard
• 36:56
Speaker 12: this before, and so I'm going to take another bite
• 36:59
Speaker 12: at this apple next week. It's going to be a
• 37:01
Speaker 12: bigger bill. I think we need this roadmap. We've got
• 37:04
Speaker 12: to fix the system. It is in crisis. And when
• 37:07
Speaker 12: you have six thousand kids in foster care in West Virginia,
• 37:11
Speaker 12: when you have the top state in the country for
• 37:13
Speaker 12: grandparents raising their grandchildren, when you have the opiate crisis
• 37:17
Speaker 12: that we do, this is a critical point in time
• 37:21
Speaker 12: where there is buy in across the board.
• 37:24
Speaker 3: We can't miss this opportunity.
• 37:26

• 37:45
Speaker 4: you brought that up because I circled that in my
• 37:47
Speaker 4: notes here in this post that you did on X
• 37:49
Speaker 4: last week, and you called the failed child welfare system
• 37:52
Speaker 4: in West Virginia, as you just said, the intersection between
• 37:55
Speaker 4: our economy and social fabric. And when I saw the exchange,
• 38:00
Speaker 4: if you will, the dialogue back and forth between you
• 38:03
Speaker 4: and the gentlemen that you referenced earlier, you got a
• 38:05
  Speaker 4: little heated there.
• 38:07
Speaker 12: Well, listen, I care about these if you look at
• 38:09
Speaker 12: the bills I sponsor. In fact, the next job I'm
• 38:11
Speaker 12: getting ready to undertake, right if I get confirmed by
• 38:14
Speaker 12: the United States Senate and get a chance to work
• 38:16
Speaker 12: with Bobby Kennedy and the whole team at the Department
• 38:19
Speaker 12: of Health and Human Services.
• 38:21
Speaker 3: Uh, there is no there is no position.
• 38:24
Speaker 12: There is no entity in the country that touches more families, families,
• 38:29
Speaker 12: I'm talking children and folks who really need help than
• 38:33
Speaker 12: the Department of Health and Human Services.
• 38:35
Speaker 3: So I'm excited by that. Challenge.
• 38:36
Speaker 12: But as I finish finish up things here in West Virginia,
• 38:40
Speaker 12: and if you look at the past, most of my
• 38:43
Speaker 12: bills touch on families. Whether it's the Cohen Cradoc Student
• 38:46
Speaker 12: Athlete Safety Bill, a critically critically important bill that will
• 38:50
Speaker 12: transform the way we view safety for our kids competing
• 38:54
Speaker 12: on fields and courts and uh and and tracks all
• 38:58
Speaker 12: across West Virginia. Or when you look at the Joel
• 39:02
Speaker 12: Archer Substance Abuse Intervention Act, which will be for the
• 39:05
Speaker 12: first time ever allow West Virginians who have dependent children
• 39:09
Speaker 12: eighteen to twenty six years old today, if they have
• 39:13
Speaker 12: a substance abuse problem and you want to get them help,
• 39:15
Speaker 12: you can check them in. They'll agree to go, but
• 39:18
Speaker 12: they can check themselves right back out they're an adult.
• 39:20
Speaker 3: This will allow a parent of a loved one.
• 39:23
Speaker 12: We call it Joel Archer Substance Abuse Intervention Act because
• 39:26
Speaker 12: Joel was one of those adult children that didn't get
• 39:29
Speaker 12: the help, didn't allow the help to be brought to him,
• 39:33
Speaker 12: and couldn't get long term treatment. But this will allow
• 39:36
Speaker 12: parents or a loved one to try to go get
• 39:39
Speaker 12: that mental hygiene, a determination that they're abused to drugs
• 39:43
Speaker 12: that they're a substance abuse person in terms of their
• 39:49
Speaker 12: use of whether it's narcotics, ventyl heroin, whatever it happens
• 39:53
Speaker 12: to be, and get them in voluntary long term treatment,
• 39:57
Speaker 12: a chance to save these kids those faces.
• 40:00
Speaker 3: That fill my wallet.
• 40:01
Speaker 12: And so this is a bill that could have big
• 40:03
Speaker 12: impact in terms of trying to turn the corner on
• 40:06
Speaker 12: a substance abuse crisis that is not going away.
• 40:10
Speaker 4: And Senator I will say this, Uh, the things that
• 40:12
Speaker 4: you that you brought up there, I mean, I think
• 40:16
Speaker 4: that's where our focus needs to be.
• 40:19
  Speaker 2: Now.
• 40:19
Speaker 4: It's easy for me, as a member the media, who
• 40:21
Speaker 4: you know, has never never served in the legislature, to
• 40:25
Speaker 4: set back and criticize. But I want to I want
• 40:27
Speaker 4: to see more as a as a voter, I'm saying
• 40:30
Speaker 4: as a taxpayer, I want to see more focus on
• 40:32
Speaker 4: things like what you're talking about here, and a little
• 40:35
Speaker 4: bit less on a lot of the social issues.
• 40:38
Speaker 12: Well, I got to tell you, I'm not in any
• 40:39
Speaker 12: of the claques. So when you when you get to
• 40:41
Speaker 12: the state senator of the House of Delegates, there are
• 40:42
Speaker 12: clicks that develop, and I'm not in any of those cliques.
• 40:45
  Speaker 3: I'm pretty independent.
• 40:46
Speaker 12: I think most folks will tell you, Stuart's pretty independent,
• 40:48
Speaker 12: but I try to keep my focus on what matters
• 40:51
Speaker 12: to my constituents. We're going to run a bill today.
• 40:53
Speaker 12: I think it comes out of my committee that's going
• 40:55
Speaker 12: to provide a utility rate credit, not tax credit, utility
• 41:00
Speaker 12: rate credit for folks who just don't have reliable water service,
• 41:03
Speaker 12: a reliable electricity service so they can get a generator
• 41:06
Speaker 12: or a water buffalo. Listen, we got folks in Lincoln County,
• 41:10
Speaker 12: Logan County, Boone County, Macdale. I can keep going if
• 41:16
Speaker 12: they have any water, it's brown water. This is a problem.
• 41:19
Speaker 12: We've got to fix these issues. We can do this right.
• 41:23
Speaker 12: This isn't rocket science. And when it comes to electricity service,
• 41:27
Speaker 12: we can't pay our bills. We're tapped out. I hear
• 41:30
Speaker 12: from folks that just don't have one dollar left. But
• 41:33
Speaker 12: how about the reliability of that service?
• 41:36
  Speaker 3: Right?
• 41:36
Speaker 12: Why are the trees still next to the lines across
• 41:40
Speaker 12: West Virginia. I thought we learned in the Durracho that
• 41:43
Speaker 12: if there's not a tree above the power line, that
• 41:46
Speaker 12: that tree can't fall on the power line and make
• 41:48
Speaker 12: the power go down. There's not a little storm that
• 41:52
Speaker 12: happens in West Virginia. Not a little snowstorm, not a
• 41:55
Speaker 12: little windstorm where we don't have absolute havoc for folks.
• 41:58
Speaker 12: And it's over and over and over again. We've had
• 42:02
Speaker 12: it with bad public customer service. We've had it with
• 42:06
Speaker 12: not being able to call these utility companies and get
• 42:08
Speaker 12: an answer as to when my service will be restored.
• 42:11
  Speaker 3: And we've had.
• 42:12
Speaker 12: It when the wind blows a little bit, or we
• 42:14
Speaker 12: get a little bit of snow or a little bit
• 42:16
Speaker 12: of ice and all that power goes down. People in
• 42:19
Speaker 12: West Virginia deserve reliable electricity and they deserve clean, pottable water.
• 42:24
Speaker 12: I've said it over and over. If we have to
• 42:26
Speaker 12: spend more money on this, that's what we're going to
• 42:28
Speaker 12: have to do. But I've had it, and I know
• 42:31
Speaker 12: my constituents have had it, and I think most West
• 42:33
Speaker 12: Virginians have had it paying exorbitant rates for utility services,
• 42:38
Speaker 12: getting crappy service. And I hate to use that word crappy,
• 42:41
Speaker 12: but let's be honest, a lot of times it's crappy service.
• 42:44
Speaker 3: It's got to improve.

• 46:22
  Speaker 3: Me tell you.
• 46:22
Speaker 12: You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot
• 46:24
Speaker 12: make it drink. You know, during that hearing, I think
• 46:27
Speaker 12: I gave the example to the secretary, and we proposed
• 46:31
Speaker 12: bill after bill after bill. I talk about these things
• 46:34
Speaker 12: all the time, why cause it matters that we fix
• 46:36
Speaker 12: the system despite that opiate crisis while I was US
• 46:40
Speaker 12: attorney and now I get more messages from parents people
• 46:44
Speaker 12: who are concerned about this system than I do any
• 46:47
Speaker 12: other subject. And during that hearing, I say, you know,
• 46:50
Speaker 12: this reminds me of the guy who's drowning on top
• 46:54
Speaker 12: of the Zarofin. He says, God will save me, and
• 46:57
Speaker 12: here comes a rowboat and he says, no, no, no, God
• 46:59
  Speaker 12: will save me.
• 47:00
Speaker 3: He waters up to his waist.
• 47:01
Speaker 12: Then next thing you know, he turns it down because
• 47:03
Speaker 12: he thought God would save him. And next time a
• 47:06
Speaker 12: helicopter comes by, waters up to his neck and he says, no,
• 47:10
Speaker 12: don't worry, get somebody else in that helicopter.
• 47:13
Speaker 3: God will save him.
• 47:13
Speaker 12: Well, the guy dies of drowning, and when he's before God,
• 47:17
Speaker 12: he says, I thought you would save me, And God said,
• 47:19
Speaker 12: I sent you a boat and a helicopter, and he
• 47:23
Speaker 12: chose neither of them. That's my point here is that
• 47:26
Speaker 12: we can do better than what's happening in our child
• 47:28
Speaker 12: welfare system. I need everybody.
• 47:31
Speaker 3: We need to We've got to solve this crisis. It
• 47:34
Speaker 3: is a moral obligation we solve this crisis.
• 47:37
Speaker 12: I need everybody who's listening and who's cynical, and who
• 47:41
Speaker 12: believes that it's all about talk. Start calling your legislators,
• 47:44
Speaker 12: and call the governor's office, and call the secretary, and
• 47:48
Speaker 12: let's get a sense of urgency to fix it now.
• 47:51
Speaker 12: Waiting till next year is not okay. Waiting till the
• 47:54
Speaker 12: year after not okay. I'm getting ready to head to Washington.
• 47:58
Speaker 12: I hope to be able to help work on these
• 48:00
Speaker 12: issues on a national basis. I care about these things desperately,
• 48:04
Speaker 12: But I need your listeners, whether they love me or
• 48:06
Speaker 12: hate me, Get on that phone, wear out your legislator
• 48:09
Speaker 12: and tell them you want something done about this issue today.
• 48:13
Speaker 4: Quickly on the Coencratic Bill. That's a young man who
• 48:16
Speaker 4: was tragically killed Boone County, Boone County youngster. And you
• 48:22
Speaker 4: have been a big part of this. You came on
• 48:24
Speaker 4: the show, we talked about the guardian caps and everything.
• 48:26
Speaker 12: Where is this now, Well, it passed committee, It is
• 48:29
Speaker 12: appearing before the Finance Committee. Then it will go to
• 48:32
Speaker 12: the Senate and hopefully to the House. This is an
• 48:34
Speaker 12: important bill, that Cohen Cradoc Student Athlete Safety Bill. It's
• 48:38
Speaker 12: not only about guardian caps around the helmets. That's a
• 48:41
Speaker 12: small piece of this bill. But it creates a fund
• 48:45
  Speaker 12: a grant program, so I don't care whether you're playing
• 48:47
Speaker 12: lacrosse or volleyball or involved in track. It will allow
• 48:51
Speaker 12: folks to get free money basically from the state every
• 48:54
Speaker 12: school to be able to improve on safety for all
• 48:58
Speaker 12: the kids all across West Virginia. But I'll tell you
• 49:01
Speaker 12: one thing that became apparent to me, we need these
• 49:04
Speaker 12: types of things. You know, Cohen Cradock, when he died
• 49:07
Speaker 12: as a result of what happened on that football field,
• 49:10
Speaker 12: to this day, there's been no full scale investigation of
• 49:14
Speaker 12: what happened on the field. It's an outrage and I
• 49:17
Speaker 12: got to tell you whoever's responsible, they need to get
• 49:21
Speaker 12: their work done. You know, Ryan Craddock to this moment
• 49:24
Speaker 12: does not have the football helmet that his son was
• 49:27
Speaker 12: wearing on the field that day. I cannot imagine the pain,
• 49:31
Speaker 12: the anguish that you would feel every single day. And
• 49:34
Speaker 12: You've been quite critical of the SSAC. I've been critical
• 49:37
Speaker 12: because they insulate themselves from any sort of improvement and
• 49:42
Speaker 12: they say they support this bill. If they support it,
• 49:45
Speaker 12: I want to see him out there openly supporting it.
• 49:47
Speaker 12: This is a great bill for student athletes across West Virginia.
• 49:52
Speaker 12: The SSAC listen. I served a foy on them to
• 49:54
Speaker 12: sort of test their transparency. They rejected giving me. They
• 49:58
Speaker 12: said nothing. We're giving you nothing. And so this organization
• 50:01
Speaker 12: reports to no one, does its own thing. I'm very
• 50:05
Speaker 12: disappointed that there's not greater transparency with the SSAC and
• 50:12
Speaker 12: the fact there's been no investigation of the death of
• 50:15
Speaker 12: Cohen Krannock. I'm not going to blame anybody for that,
• 50:18
Speaker 12: but where's the leadership There ought to be something come
• 50:21
Speaker 12: out so we understand exactly what happened that day. His
• 50:24
Speaker 12: family deserves that. His family deserves that.
• 50:26
Speaker 4: Texas people are still dying every day and their kids
• 50:29
Speaker 4: are wards of the state. Less than thirty days left
• 50:31
Speaker 4: in the session, do something.
• 50:32
Speaker 12: Listen, I'm trying listen. Like I said, you can lead
• 50:35
Speaker 12: a horse to water, but you can't make a drink.
• 50:37
Speaker 12: I'm one member up there. I'm speaking loudly on this issue.
• 50:41
Speaker 12: Anybody who's listening will tell you I'm screaming off the
• 50:44
Speaker 12: rooftop about the issues of child welfare. I want these
• 50:48
Speaker 12: things fixed. We cannot continue down this path. It is
• 50:53
Speaker 12: an embarrassment to the state of West Virginia, and I
• 50:56
Speaker 12: think it's more important than any economic issue or social
• 51:00
Speaker 12: asue we're dealing with right now. We've got to make
• 51:02
Speaker 12: sure that we're responding to the needs of these kids
• 51:04
Speaker 12: and we fix it.
• 51:06
Speaker 4: Let me ask you quickly. You kind of alluded to
• 51:08
Speaker 4: a little bit earlier. You still got to go through confirmation.
• 51:11
Speaker 4: I don't know what you're allowed to say at this point,
• 51:13
Speaker 4: so don't want to get you in any kind of
• 51:14
Speaker 4: trouble as we wrap up. But thirty or forty five seconds,
• 51:16
Speaker 4: what does your next career step.
• 51:18
Speaker 3: What is the next step.
• 51:19
Speaker 12: Well, we're getting closer to those confirmation hearings. But if
• 51:22
Speaker 12: I get the opportunity, I don't want folks to understand
• 51:24
Speaker 12: how big this is. It's good for West Virginia and
• 51:27
Speaker 12: it's the National Institutes of Health, the CDC, Medicare, Medicaid
• 51:32
Speaker 12: being the General Counsel something this big, the Office of
• 51:35
Speaker 12: Refugee Resettlement, the Bureau for Children and Families, all Indian Health.
• 51:40
Speaker 12: To be in a position where I can help lead
• 51:43
Speaker 12: efforts to be able to deliver critical services to folks
• 51:46
Speaker 12: who need it, desperately need it. I'm excited by that opportunity.
• 51:51
Speaker 12: And let me say this is about West Virginia, not
• 51:53
Speaker 12: about me, but real honor to be so early selected
• 51:57
Speaker 12: by the President to serve in this role.
• 51:59
Speaker 4: Say Senator Mike's Oh, I appreciate you being here. Man,
• 52:01
Speaker 4: Thanks a lot, Thank you? All right, TJ. What's up
