- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, this is Caroline Munro and you're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 0:21Speaker 2: The following feature has been rated R by the Motion
- 0:24Speaker 2: Picture Association of America. It is intended for mature audiences
- 0:27Speaker 2: and parental discretion is advised.
- 0:39Speaker 3: It's showtime, folks.
- 0:42Speaker 4: Enjoy the show.
- 0:45Speaker 5: Our nuclear reactor pumping out one million kilowatts of power.
- 1:20Speaker 4: They bought their tickets.
- 1:22Speaker 6: They knew what they were getting into.
- 1:25Speaker 5: I say, let them crash.
- 1:32Speaker 7: Way down among Brazilians, coffee beans grow by the billions.
- 1:37Speaker 8: So they've got to find those extra cups to fill.
- 1:41Speaker 7: They got an awful lot of coffee in Brazil.
- 1:47Speaker 8: What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian.
- 1:49Speaker 9: I'm Ben.
- 1:50Speaker 10: I'm Erin.
- 1:51Speaker 5: I'm Greg.
- 1:52Speaker 11: I'm Marlena.
- 1:53Speaker 12: I'm Beau. I'm Fred.
- 1:55Speaker 8: And we are back with another exciting adventure of The
- 1:58Speaker 8: Caffeinated Movie Geek.
- 1:59Speaker 5: Cappuccino on my butt.
- 2:00Speaker 4: I still drink coffee.
- 2:03Speaker 3: The last fucking thing you need is another cup of coffee.
- 2:06Speaker 5: It's time for The Caffeinated Movie Geek.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Woohoo!
- 2:11Speaker 8: We are coming to you live via digital recording from
- 2:13Speaker 8: Nancy's Bagel Grounds, where we will get together, drink too
- 2:16Speaker 8: much coffee, and start getting kind of silly, obviously. So,
- 2:23Speaker 8: with that, we'll see.
- 2:23Speaker 12: How is that funny?
- 2:24Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 2:26Speaker 5: He's always asking for some kind of noise during the call.
- 2:29Speaker 8: Not at the wrong place. It's too late. You already
- 2:32Speaker 8: missed that one.
- 2:32Speaker 12: It's like a joke in church. The very fact that
- 2:34Speaker 12: you're not supposed to laugh at that moment makes it
- 2:36Speaker 12: so damn funny.
- 2:37Speaker 5: Interrupting Cal. Woo-hoo! I've had too much coffee, so.
- 2:44Speaker 8: Well, this will be a good test on your memory. So, Erin,
- 2:47Speaker 8: I ask you, what blend of coffee are we drinking
- 2:50Speaker 8: this week?
- 2:51Speaker 9: Pacific Blacktail?
- 2:54Speaker 8: Good! Way to pull it out.
- 2:56Speaker 6: All right.
- 2:57Speaker 8: It is, in fact, Pacific Blacktail. Come on, have it.
- 3:00Speaker 8: I'm going to enjoy some now.
- 3:02Speaker 5: We established that that's a fish.
- 3:03Speaker 4: Is that right?
- 3:04Speaker 8: I still say it's a deer.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Oh, okay.
- 3:06Speaker 8: It's a deer. You guys don't believe me.
- 3:09Speaker 5: I was just going to say that there's a fish
- 3:11Speaker 5: in the percolator.
- 3:11Speaker 8: Everybody else thinks it's a fish and they want to
- 3:13Speaker 8: put it in their percolator, which sounds kind of inappropriate.
- 3:16Speaker 8: But speaking of fish.
- 3:18Speaker 6: If you move that deer out of the way, put
- 3:20Speaker 6: that in my percolator.
- 3:21Speaker 8: Speaking of fish and inappropriate things, I'll do a quick
- 3:26Speaker 8: one-off geek activity here. And it ties into this week's movie.
- 3:30Speaker 8: I watched Piranha Double D.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:34Speaker 8: I knew what I was getting myself into.
- 3:35Speaker 9: It already got released?
- 3:37Speaker 12: Oh yeah, it's on DVD already. Apparently it just got
- 3:39Speaker 12: dropped in the Redbox from the sky.
- 3:41Speaker 9: Immediately. Here you go.
- 3:43Speaker 8: They were not messing around.
- 3:44Speaker 9: A present from God.
- 3:45Speaker 8: Because that was my thing. I was like, how the
- 3:46Speaker 8: hell is this here already? It was just in the
- 3:49Speaker 8: theater like a week and a half ago.
- 3:50Speaker 5: I think movies don't actually exist outside of Redbox. I
- 3:54Speaker 5: think they're completely produced in them.
- 3:56Speaker 8: They might be. There's a lot of computer stuff now.
- 4:00Speaker 8: It might all be going on in that box.
- 4:01Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 4:02Speaker 13: Yeah, they can crank out those fake Madagascar and fake
- 4:07Speaker 13: Brave movies faster than they can complete the previews for
- 4:10Speaker 13: the real ones.
- 4:10Speaker 8: That's true. As soon as you turn around, there's another,
- 4:13Speaker 8: there's some sort of knockoff movie that's only available at
- 4:17Speaker 8: Redbox now.
- 4:17Speaker 12: I have high expectations for Piranha 3DD. I hope I'm
- 4:20Speaker 12: not going to be disappointed.
- 4:21Speaker 8: I just saw Double E because I was at home,
- 4:23Speaker 8: so there was no 3 involved. But, well, that's the thing.
- 4:26Speaker 8: I'd already, like, as soon as it came out, which
- 4:29Speaker 8: was that only week that you could have talked about it,
- 4:31Speaker 8: because then it was already a red box. But that week, like,
- 4:33Speaker 8: it got so much bad press that I just went
- 4:37Speaker 8: in going, this is, like, I mean, like, unwatchable kind of,
- 4:40Speaker 8: you know, comments. So I was just like, I was
- 4:42Speaker 8: expecting it to be so bad. And I'm like... I
- 4:45Speaker 8: get in there, I'm like, this is just a bad
- 4:47Speaker 8: horror movie. Like, it's like pretty much all of these
- 4:50Speaker 8: bad horror movies. I mean, it's the same as the
- 4:52Speaker 8: first one. It knows what kind of bad horror movie
- 4:54Speaker 8: it is, and it's playing with that, and it's making
- 4:57Speaker 8: fun of, you know, the fact that it's already a
- 4:59Speaker 8: knockoff of a movie that really didn't take itself all
- 5:01Speaker 8: that seriously to begin with. So it's, Yeah, I mean,
- 5:05Speaker 8: if you're looking for something that's equally as much comedy
- 5:08Speaker 8: as horror, this is probably for you. Well, that's good.
- 5:11Speaker 12: I mean, the trailer in and of itself, I mean,
- 5:13Speaker 12: you see that Ving Rhames has shotguns for legs. I'm like,
- 5:16Speaker 12: all right, I mean, I can buy into this.
- 5:18Speaker 8: That's the thing. They had to pull out, like, how
- 5:20Speaker 8: many people could we kind of explain that we could
- 5:23Speaker 8: get back, even though we thought they were dead last time?
- 5:26Speaker 8: Because there's a couple of characters that they're like, well,
- 5:28Speaker 8: we didn't see him die, so we're going to bring
- 5:30Speaker 8: him back in the sequel.
- 5:31Speaker 12: I mean, Christopher Lloyd, that's the first thing he's done
- 5:34Speaker 12: in forever is those films, and he steals the scene.
- 5:37Speaker 12: I mean, he's chewing the scenery more than the piranhas
- 5:39Speaker 12: are when he's gone.
- 5:40Speaker 8: He's back, not to spoil it for you. Speaking of
- 5:44Speaker 8: the cameos, that's what steals this movie. It almost runs
- 5:49Speaker 8: away with it in a bad way.
- 5:50Speaker 12: The Hasselhoff.
- 5:51Speaker 8: That Hasselhoff. Which, I mean, that's not really a spoiler,
- 5:55Speaker 8: because I heard he was in it from the beginning. But,
- 5:58Speaker 8: if you don't want to ruin the end of Spirana
- 6:00Speaker 8: Double D, yeah, turn it off for a minute. He's, like,
- 6:04Speaker 8: the joke doesn't stop. In the beginning, it's kind of fun,
- 6:08Speaker 8: because it shows you how self-aware he is of What
- 6:12Speaker 8: a joke he's kind of become. Like, and he's sort
- 6:14Speaker 8: of playing with that in the beginning. Like, he's in
- 6:17Speaker 8: a motel, and he's still writing one of his bad songs.
- 6:20Speaker 8: And he's like, he gets to the thing, and he
- 6:22Speaker 8: says something to the effect of, oh, God, how desperate
- 6:24Speaker 8: am I? You know, he makes some sort of comment
- 6:26Speaker 8: to that. So he's acknowledging the level of stardom he's
- 6:29Speaker 8: fallen to. And then, like, but it doesn't stop. Like,
- 6:33Speaker 8: he gets in there, and it's like they just keep
- 6:35Speaker 8: beating these Hasselhoff jokes to death. And by the end, like, there's, like,
- 6:40Speaker 8: multiple endings of Hasselhoff jokes. Like, it continues on. As
- 6:44Speaker 8: the credits go on, they do several alternate joke endings
- 6:48Speaker 8: of Hasselhoff. And I'm just like, okay, we get it.
- 6:50Speaker 8: We think he's funny for a minute, but not anymore. So, yeah,
- 6:55Speaker 8: maybe that's it. Maybe just a little Hasselhoff goes a
- 6:57Speaker 8: long way because, yeah, it's too much by the end
- 7:01Speaker 8: of it, but. Other than that, I didn't hate it.
- 7:04Speaker 8: I mean, if you want a stupid movie, this is
- 7:06Speaker 8: your movie. It doesn't pretend to be anything else.
- 7:10Speaker 9: So it's like Pieces. It's exactly what you think it is.
- 7:14Speaker 9: My favorite.
- 7:15Speaker 8: Stolen straight from the trailer there. But, yeah, you've got
- 7:19Speaker 8: to respect movies that do that.
- 7:20Speaker 4: Yeah, that's how it is.
- 7:21Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 7:23Speaker 9: I mean, any film to where it's self-aware, I mean,
- 7:25Speaker 9: I very much like.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:28Speaker 8: Well, that middle line of self-aware but not winking at
- 7:31Speaker 8: the camera.
- 7:32Speaker 12: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Very much, yeah.
- 7:35Speaker 8: Yeah, that's okay. It can go too far, as this
- 7:38Speaker 8: one kind of seems to, at least with that joke.
- 7:40Speaker 8: The rest of it is tolerable, but it just beat
- 7:43Speaker 8: that to death. On that note, we'll get back to
- 7:47Speaker 8: that actor in a minute here. So we will take
- 7:50Speaker 8: a break and be back with this week's movie.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Woo! Woo!
- 8:12Speaker 12: So are the.
- 8:12Speaker 15: Stars in the sky Singing goodnight to the setting sun
- 8:24Speaker 15: That's when.
- 8:24Speaker 16: My world comes alive I am the Night.
- 8:30Speaker 3: Rocker I wanna rock you all.
- 8:32Speaker 8: Night long I am.
- 8:35Speaker 16: The Night Rocker I want to love you with my soul.
- 8:41Speaker 16: It's a sweet lullaby.
- 8:43Speaker 9: And I know you want to fly.
- 8:46Speaker 16: So come, let's fly away. I am a night rocker.
- 8:59Speaker 7: When you're on a picnic, hot dogs are mighty good
- 9:01Speaker 7: this way. But when you're here at the theater, hot
- 9:04Speaker 7: dogs are at their best. We start with the choicest franks.
- 9:07Speaker 7: Cook them until they're just right. Make available your favorite
- 9:10Speaker 7: seasonings and leave the rest to you.
- 9:13Speaker 8: Everyone likes our hot dogs.
- 9:15Speaker 7: Why not get one for everyone right now?
- 9:17Speaker 2: All his life, he only cared about one thing.
- 9:20Speaker 14: Himself.
- 9:21Speaker 2: But now, the best hotshot pilot in the galaxy was
- 9:25Speaker 2: playing babysitter to an old man, a green kid, two robots,
- 9:30Speaker 2: and a princess. Han Solo really had his hands full.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Han Solo is back. Star Wars is back. Star Wars.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Rated PG. Parental guidance suggested.

- 10:34Speaker 16: It's time for Sofa Theater. Sofa Theater.
- 10:49Speaker 17: Is split into two warring factions, our own and the
- 10:55Speaker 17: one ruled by the evil Count Zarzan from the League
- 11:00Speaker 17: of the Dark Worlds. The Count has created a weapon,
- 11:05Speaker 17: a weapon so vast, so huge, that it would take
- 11:09Speaker 17: a whole planet to conceal it. You must sail through
- 11:15Speaker 17: the haunted stars, find accounts, secret, planet, and destroy it.
- 11:31Speaker 10: From dusk till dawn You don't miss a kiss till
- 11:38Speaker 10: it's gone So just hold on You don't have forever
- 11:47Speaker 10: for long I don't need to tell you what you
- 11:51Speaker 10: already know.
- 11:52Speaker 16: I don't want to say.
- 11:55Speaker 10: What my lips want to show My heart's like dynamite,
- 12:00Speaker 10: ready to blow.
- 12:03Speaker 16: Until the stars come crashing down. Until the earth spins
- 12:10Speaker 16: halfway round. Until the sunlight hits the ground. Baby, you
- 12:17Speaker 16: should know I won't let you go.
- 12:22Speaker 10: Until the stars crash down.
- 12:25Speaker 8: Alright, welcome back to Movie Meltdown Sofa Theater. This week's
- 12:28Speaker 8: Sofa Theater feature is Star Crash. The year is 1978,
- 12:33Speaker 8: which is arguable depending on where you look at it,
- 12:35Speaker 8: but I believe it was actually released in 78. The director,
- 12:40Speaker 8: Luigi Cozzi, I believe is how he says it, or again,
- 12:44Speaker 8: if you watch the movie, Lewis Coates is his Americanized
- 12:47Speaker 8: cover name. I don't know why he needs a stage
- 12:49Speaker 8: name as a director, but whatever. I guess people hated
- 12:52Speaker 8: to work with Italians. I don't know. The plot, according
- 12:56Speaker 8: to IMDb, and this is almost as bad as it gets,
- 13:00Speaker 8: For IMDb, and that's saying a lot. Epic action in
- 13:04Speaker 8: outer space when the good guy set out to track
- 13:06Speaker 8: the evil Count's secret weapon.
- 13:09Speaker 9: That's not even a sentence.
- 13:10Speaker 8: They were five years old, right?
- 13:11Speaker 3: Right.
- 13:12Speaker 8: Because there's no excuse for a grown-up to have written that.
- 13:14Speaker 9: Right.
- 13:15Speaker 5: The bad guys and the good guys.
- 13:18Speaker 8: And in the middle, I expect it to go, and
- 13:20Speaker 8: then pew, pew.
- 13:21Speaker 5: But it does.
- 13:24Speaker 8: It does in the movie. I mean, in the description,
- 13:26Speaker 8: I expect them to work in the sound effects. It's
- 13:29Speaker 8: that badly pieced together. So with that, spoiler alert, because, yeah,
- 13:33Speaker 8: we're going to ruin this. And it's, It's an epic
- 13:35Speaker 8: action in outer space.
- 13:37Speaker 12: Can we ruin it?
- 13:38Speaker 5: Right.
- 13:38Speaker 9: I think we can.
- 13:39Speaker 5: Maybe that description's perfect.
- 13:41Speaker 8: I think we can, and we probably will.
- 13:44Speaker 17: Right.
- 13:45Speaker 8: But before we get to our thoughts, it's time for
- 13:48Speaker 8: one from the vaults. And with that, I thought I
- 13:50Speaker 8: would share with you. Go ahead and get the props
- 13:52Speaker 8: out here. I would let you all partake in my
- 13:55Speaker 8: official Stella Star autographed photo here.
- 13:58Speaker 3: Oh, wow.
- 13:59Speaker 8: So if you want, I can leave that there for
- 14:00Speaker 8: you to gaze upon her the entire episode.
- 14:03Speaker 4: Sure.
- 14:05Speaker 12: Caroline monroe was still hot she is she she.
- 14:08Speaker 8: Has held up amazingly well yeah and was ridiculously nice
- 14:11Speaker 8: so i have to give her credit.
- 14:13Speaker 5: Well she has access to a uh a vehicle that
- 14:17Speaker 5: can stop time so maybe she's so.
- 14:20Speaker 12: Did the emperor in the movie.
- 14:22Speaker 8: She might have tapped in a little of that i
- 14:24Speaker 8: suppose so with that yeah we we did sit down
- 14:28Speaker 8: and talk to caroline monroe and we're going to get
- 14:30Speaker 8: her take on uh stella star and um star crash
- 14:33Speaker 8: as a whole here so We'll see what Caroline has
- 14:36Speaker 8: to say.
- 14:36Speaker 18: You did Star Crash, which is pretty interesting. I've just
- 14:46Speaker 18: been recently watching it again, and it's so likable.
- 14:50Speaker 2: It's likable.
- 14:51Speaker 16: What a good word.
- 14:52Speaker 8: Yeah, there's so much fun going on. How did you
- 14:54Speaker 8: end up in that?
- 14:56Speaker 1: That was Luigi.
- 14:57Speaker 6: It's Luigi.
- 14:58Speaker 1: He knew, he loved Ray's work, Ray Harryhausen's work.
- 15:02Speaker 3: And....
- 15:04Speaker 1: I think he'd seen some of my work, but I
- 15:06Speaker 1: think he liked the thought of the combination of me
- 15:09Speaker 1: having worked with Ray on his special effect films and
- 15:15Speaker 1: some of my work that I think I was cast
- 15:18Speaker 1: as Dennis Day.
- 15:18Speaker 8: He kept sort of playing the character around you more?
- 15:21Speaker 1: I think so, yes, which is wonderful, really.
- 15:24Speaker 6: Very, very lucky.
- 15:26Speaker 1: She was a character.
- 15:27Speaker 8: She was just.
- 15:29Speaker 1: You just had to go for it. I mean, in
- 15:31Speaker 1: every way. And, of course, then we had David Hasselhoff,
- 15:35Speaker 1: Christopher Plummer, who bought the heavyweight acting, serious stuff, who
- 15:40Speaker 1: was wonderful, wonderful. And then they had the rest of us.
- 15:46Speaker 8: How about the costuming for you?
- 15:48Speaker 5: How much fun was that?
- 15:50Speaker 1: Well, the costuming is.
- 15:53Speaker 8: Or lack thereof.
- 15:54Speaker 1: The lack of. I was quite surprised when I'd I
- 15:59Speaker 1: read the script. Luigi had called me, you know, said
- 16:02Speaker 1: I'm very interested. Let's see the script, read the script,
- 16:05Speaker 1: like the script. Came over, he said, oh, we're going
- 16:08Speaker 1: to do the costume fittings first. I thought, wonderful. Space pilot,
- 16:12Speaker 1: I'll wear, you know, the 2001, I'll wear all the
- 16:16Speaker 1: serious stuff. So I get to the place, and there's...
- 16:20Speaker 1: A leather bikini. There was a strip. He said, I said,
- 16:27Speaker 1: this is your costume, can I? This is your costume.
- 16:30Speaker 5: I said, oh, great.
- 16:31Speaker 1: I'll put that on under the, you know, under the suit.
- 16:34Speaker 1: He looked at me and said, he said, what'd you say?
- 16:38Speaker 1: I said, I'll put that on under the suit and then,
- 16:40Speaker 1: you know, that's fine. He said, no, no, that is
- 16:43Speaker 1: the suit.
- 16:44Speaker 5: I said, okay.
- 16:46Speaker 1: So we use lots of what you call toupee tape.
- 16:49Speaker 1: What do you call toupee tape?
- 16:51Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 16:52Speaker 9: Or double-sided.
- 16:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Yes, and I think there's one or two mishaps, but
- 16:57Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm sure there must have been. So
- 17:00Speaker 1: there I was, still a star.
- 17:02Speaker 8: Wasn't it like platform heels running around through space?
- 17:05Speaker 1: Well, I did wear tiny... No, actually, no.
- 17:08Speaker 14: No, no.
- 17:09Speaker 1: No, there was tiny little heels. And then for certain
- 17:12Speaker 1: scenes they had... Because I had a lot of running
- 17:15Speaker 1: and stuff. So for certain scenes the boots were flat.
- 17:19Speaker 1: But they were long thigh boots, but with little heels,
- 17:23Speaker 1: if you noticed. Hardly any heels. No, I couldn't have
- 17:26Speaker 1: done it.
- 17:26Speaker 8: Can you imagine that?
- 17:27Speaker 1: I think Barbarella did that. Jane Fonda, I think she
- 17:31Speaker 1: did it in platforms, but no. It sort.
- 17:36Speaker 12: Of has a Barbarella look about it.
- 17:40Speaker 13: Yeah, that's what I thought. Very Barbarella.
- 17:43Speaker 6: All the costumes had a kind of ubiquitous space wedgie
- 17:46Speaker 6: thing going on.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Right.
- 17:49Speaker 6: They all sort of had that extended wedgie V Vulcan something.
- 17:57Speaker 12: Well, that was the whole thing is when David Hasselhoff's
- 17:59Speaker 12: character was fighting the, I can't even remember the character's
- 18:03Speaker 12: name now, the fellow with the shaved head, you know,
- 18:06Speaker 12: the alien. I just noticed as they were fighting, of
- 18:09Speaker 12: all things, I was like, the whole back of that
- 18:11Speaker 12: costume zips up. And then I got to thinking on
- 18:14Speaker 12: a day-to-day basis, what a pain in the ass to like,
- 18:17Speaker 12: Be in some sort of uniform to where you have
- 18:20Speaker 12: to reach and try to zip up all the way
- 18:23Speaker 12: from the butt to the neck.
- 18:25Speaker 8: He gets his green bald girlfriend. Can you zip me up, honey?
- 18:28Speaker 8: Isn't that how you do it in those situations?
- 18:31Speaker 5: I mean, they're stuck in space forever.
- 18:32Speaker 9: I guess the robot does it for him.
- 18:34Speaker 4: Right.
- 18:36Speaker 13: As she said, he was a girl's best friend or
- 18:40Speaker 13: something like that.
- 18:43Speaker 6: So obviously we've already rolled.
- 18:46Speaker 8: Into it here. So yeah, thank you to Caroline. Now
- 18:49Speaker 8: let's get into our thoughts. So I'd say where do
- 18:52Speaker 8: you want to begin? But I mean, you get the
- 18:54Speaker 8: overhead ship shot. I mean, the first shot you get
- 18:58Speaker 8: is stolen from Star Wars.
- 18:59Speaker 9: I feel like this movie was like everything they used
- 19:03Speaker 9: was like scraps or leftover props and like sets from
- 19:07Speaker 9: Star Wars that Lucas didn't want to use. And they
- 19:10Speaker 9: just like... I don't.
- 19:11Speaker 8: Think they look that good. I'm sorry.
- 19:13Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't know. My feeling about it was that
- 19:16Speaker 6: it was so cynical, it was innocent. It didn't even
- 19:20Speaker 6: know what cynical was.
- 19:22Speaker 19: Yeah.
- 19:22Speaker 6: Kind of like the early Beatles, you know?
- 19:25Speaker 5: And I remember like.
- 19:26Speaker 6: Paul thought back on it and he said, I guess
- 19:29Speaker 6: all of our early songs were basically written to our
- 19:32Speaker 6: fans and essentially said, please buy this record.
- 19:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:37Speaker 12: It's like, yeah.
- 19:38Speaker 8: That sounds about right.
- 19:40Speaker 6: It's so cynical that it's innocent.
- 19:44Speaker 12: I felt there were moments about it that were endearing
- 19:47Speaker 12: in and of themselves.
- 19:48Speaker 8: I think there were a lot of them.
- 19:51Speaker 9: I think that if 2001 made you feel like you
- 19:56Speaker 9: were in space, this movie made you feel like you
- 19:58Speaker 9: were in someone's basement or something.
- 20:01Speaker 8: But it's an awesome basement.
- 20:03Speaker 9: Yes, it's an awesome basement. It's a very crazy awesome
- 20:07Speaker 9: basement with Cool stop-motion robots and things.
- 20:11Speaker 8: And really good weed.
- 20:14Speaker 5: That's right.
- 20:14Speaker 12: Yeah, because I've never seen space that colorful in any movie.
- 20:17Speaker 9: It was like Christmas space.
- 20:18Speaker 6: Yeah, the colors in there.
- 20:19Speaker 5: That was the better part of the whole movie.
- 20:21Speaker 9: It's very inspired.
- 20:22Speaker 5: Charming color sensibility.
- 20:24Speaker 9: Art direction for space. I really do. He did that
- 20:27Speaker 9: on purpose.
- 20:28Speaker 8: I mean, he actually... I mean, he shot it in Technicolor.
- 20:30Speaker 8: He dusted off the technology it used to make that,
- 20:34Speaker 8: I guess, because if you look, it's actually used in
- 20:36Speaker 8: part of the process. And that's what it... Which, this
- 20:39Speaker 8: is why I almost give him credit. I mean, for
- 20:41Speaker 8: as much as wrong with this movie, like, it's the
- 20:44Speaker 8: same thing with all of those. With anybody who really
- 20:47Speaker 8: kind of loves what they're making, I mean, it's like he...
- 20:51Speaker 8: really wanted to make a good movie in his mind.
- 20:53Speaker 8: It's that Ed Wood thing. This is the greatest thing ever.
- 20:56Speaker 8: And again, being inspired by much better movies. He's looking
- 21:01Speaker 8: at all the old sci-fi from the 50s and Forbidden Planet.
- 21:05Speaker 8: Look at those colors. And he was looking at that going,
- 21:07Speaker 8: I want that. I want that in my movie. And
- 21:10Speaker 8: he's trying to do it. You're just... You're like, oh,
- 21:13Speaker 8: look at you trying to make a sci-fi movie.
- 21:16Speaker 12: It's very much like that. You can almost imagine just
- 21:18Speaker 12: him sitting in there opening day of Star Wars like, oh,
- 21:21Speaker 12: this is so cool. I want to make a movie now.
- 21:24Speaker 12: And then that's what happened. I don't think it was
- 21:27Speaker 12: a malicious attempt to ride the coattails of Star Wars.
- 21:31Speaker 12: I think it was just, you know, just what I
- 21:35Speaker 12: took from it is it was the person who was
- 21:36Speaker 12: so awestruck with it. It's just like, I want to
- 21:38Speaker 12: make a movie like that.
- 21:39Speaker 4: Sure.
- 21:40Speaker 5: I thought it was some of those bands, those garage
- 21:45Speaker 5: bands in the early 90s that might have listened to
- 21:49Speaker 5: Pearl Jam or Nirvana and said, I can do that.
- 21:51Speaker 8: I want to be that.
- 21:52Speaker 5: And then you get the crap of 96 through 98, 96, 98.
- 21:58Speaker 5: That's kind of what you... And I don't want to
- 22:00Speaker 5: call this crap, but it is on obviously a lower level. Now,
- 22:05Speaker 5: I got a different feel from it, though. I kind
- 22:08Speaker 5: of thought... Because I thought the Barbarella thing, I thought
- 22:11Speaker 5: it was like your dad had this awesome Barbarella Star
- 22:17Speaker 5: Wars porn. and then your mom found it and made
- 22:20Speaker 5: him edit out all the sex.
- 22:23Speaker 6: I had the exact thought that it was like porn
- 22:26Speaker 6: without the sex.
- 22:26Speaker 8: Without the sex, exactly.
- 22:27Speaker 5: I thought the same, yeah.
- 22:29Speaker 11: I expect her to be sentenced to be like a
- 22:31Speaker 11: sex slave.
- 22:31Speaker 8: Right.
- 22:32Speaker 9: I mean, when they go on the plane with like
- 22:34Speaker 9: all the ladies who I, it looked like, what's her name? Oh, who,
- 22:36Speaker 9: was that a famous actress who played like the leader
- 22:38Speaker 9: of the woman plant?
- 22:40Speaker 8: Not that I.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Heard of her.
- 22:41Speaker 12: What's her name?
- 22:42Speaker 5: She looked familiar.
- 22:42Speaker 12: I heart Huckabees. Um, Are you talking about Lily Tomlin?
- 22:46Speaker 9: I thought it was like a young... No, seriously. No,
- 22:49Speaker 9: for a split second, I was like, is that Lily Tomlin?
- 22:52Speaker 9: Because she's really hot. She was really hot. Because she
- 22:55Speaker 9: sounded like Lily Tomlin. I was like, that can't be her.
- 22:58Speaker 8: She'd be okay on a lesbian play.
- 22:59Speaker 12: The weird thing is, I looked up on IMDb, and
- 23:02Speaker 12: I was looking at all the credits, and of all
- 23:05Speaker 12: the odd credits, Hamilton Camp dubbed that character... The voice
- 23:11Speaker 12: of Gizmoduck from DuckTales dubbed the woman you're talking about
- 23:16Speaker 12: in the English version.
- 23:18Speaker 4: Wow.
- 23:19Speaker 9: So obscure.
- 23:20Speaker 8: Well, I mean, you were talking about watching Star Wars
- 23:23Speaker 8: and being taken with it. Now, if you want to
- 23:26Speaker 8: go with Luigi's story, again, this is how he's telling
- 23:29Speaker 8: it years later, is that he already had this big
- 23:32Speaker 8: sci-fi project together. and was trying to sell it, and
- 23:36Speaker 8: the guy was like, no, I don't want anything to
- 23:38Speaker 8: do with this. Not a chance in hell. And, like,
- 23:40Speaker 8: a few months later, Star Wars opens up, and the
- 23:44Speaker 8: guy calls him back, and he's like, hey, remember that movie?
- 23:47Speaker 8: So then suddenly they buy it. I think there's maybe
- 23:50Speaker 8: somewhere in the middle that's true. I think maybe he
- 23:52Speaker 8: had a sci-fi story, and then they started adding in
- 23:55Speaker 8: all this knockoff Star Wars stuff once they saw it.
- 23:58Speaker 12: And that might have been the Roger Corman thing, too.
- 24:00Speaker 12: He's like, why don't you put some of this in
- 24:02Speaker 12: so that way it helps sell it a little bit more.
- 24:05Speaker 8: I thought maybe he bought it after the fact.
- 24:07Speaker 5: After it was already made.
- 24:08Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 24:08Speaker 8: I think that's what it sounded like. It's like the
- 24:10Speaker 8: original company that finished it with the guy watched it
- 24:14Speaker 8: and didn't want anything to do with it and dropped it,
- 24:16Speaker 8: and New World picked it up and was like, Roger's like,
- 24:18Speaker 8: I don't care. This looks great.
- 24:20Speaker 16: It was awesome.
- 24:21Speaker 8: In fact, I'm going to make Battle Beyond the Stars now.
- 24:23Speaker 5: Wouldn't you love to sit and watch a movie with him? Because,
- 24:27Speaker 5: especially a movie that was undiscovered and it was something
- 24:30Speaker 5: like this, and just to watch his expression like, this
- 24:32Speaker 5: is it. This is what I want.
- 24:34Speaker 9: This is my favorite part.
- 24:35Speaker 5: Right. I would love, that would be like a bucket
- 24:38Speaker 5: list kind of thing.
- 24:39Speaker 9: Oh, yeah.
- 24:40Speaker 5: Sit and watch a movie with him.
- 24:41Speaker 12: That's, I really, I met him a couple years ago
- 24:44Speaker 12: at Fright Night Film Fest and there's a guy to where, hey,
- 24:47Speaker 12: I was just kind of sad and you go there
- 24:48Speaker 12: and You've got these giant lines for the new Jason
- 24:52Speaker 12: and these obscure zombies from Dawn of the Dead. And
- 24:55Speaker 12: here's Roger Corman sitting there, just tumbleweeds blowing by his table.
- 24:59Speaker 12: And I come in and I'm just like, ah.
- 25:02Speaker 8: It was kind of sad.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:04Speaker 17: Right.
- 25:04Speaker 12: But you could tell that he just loves every project
- 25:07Speaker 12: that he's done.
- 25:08Speaker 5: That's great.
- 25:09Speaker 8: And was amazingly talented. He gets so much... notoriety for
- 25:14Speaker 8: being sort of schlocky as a producer which he was
- 25:17Speaker 8: but like you go back and look at those things
- 25:19Speaker 8: he directed early yeah he's got a good eye i
- 25:22Speaker 8: mean he knew how to make a movie granted he
- 25:24Speaker 8: was also really good at getting him in under budget
- 25:27Speaker 8: but for what he was doing for what he was
- 25:29Speaker 8: dealing with i think he makes some some pretty decent
- 25:31Speaker 8: looking pictures for what he was trying to do and
- 25:34Speaker 8: what he was working.
- 25:35Speaker 3: With poor stella your escape efforts have been wasted okay
- 25:40Speaker 3: i've lost again Take me back to that hell of
- 25:44Speaker 3: a prison.
- 25:45Speaker 8: You don't understand.
- 25:46Speaker 3: We were sent to free you. Your sentence has been canceled.
- 25:49Speaker 3: Have you both gone mad? I only have logic and
- 25:52Speaker 3: emotion circuits. No room for craziness. We've only been assigned
- 25:55Speaker 3: to a top-secret Imperial mission. We must now leave and
- 25:57Speaker 3: set Acton free.
- 25:58Speaker 9: I did think the robot sort of C-3PO character... I
- 26:07Speaker 9: thought his southern accent was very charming. It actually kept
- 26:11Speaker 9: me going through the movie.
- 26:12Speaker 6: He was the cook on the western wagon thing.
- 26:16Speaker 8: That was that boy.
- 26:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 26:18Speaker 6: The guy who's the cook.
- 26:19Speaker 10: Yes.
- 26:20Speaker 8: He's cooking.
- 26:21Speaker 9: I'm wired for logic and emotion.
- 26:25Speaker 8: Got no room for crazy.
- 26:26Speaker 9: Yeah. He was telling her where they're stuck on the
- 26:31Speaker 9: snow planet and he tells her to lie down in
- 26:33Speaker 9: the snow and monitor your heart. And he says, like,
- 26:37Speaker 9: lay your head down. He says, like, lay your head down.
- 26:38Speaker 9: He's like, lay your head. And the way he said
- 26:40Speaker 9: head was so funny. I was just like, that's so cute.
- 26:43Speaker 9: Lay your head down.
- 26:44Speaker 12: I think the thing that cracked me up the most
- 26:45Speaker 12: about that scene, too, is when the snow starts piling
- 26:49Speaker 12: on them. It's like you can essentially see the footsteps.
- 26:51Speaker 5: Around the door.
- 26:52Speaker 12: People were like, dump some more snow on them. And
- 26:54Speaker 12: it ran out of shot.
- 26:55Speaker 9: And it's like, let's go back in and put more
- 26:57Speaker 9: on them. And it ran out of shot.
- 26:58Speaker 5: What I really appreciated is when they're warming her back up.
- 27:03Speaker 5: her hair is wet from the melting snow and then
- 27:06Speaker 5: all of a sudden she sits up and it's blown
- 27:07Speaker 5: dry and perfect.
- 27:09Speaker 8: The wonders of space.
- 27:11Speaker 5: It was beautiful.
- 27:12Speaker 13: One thing I thought was weird is like the robot
- 27:15Speaker 13: doesn't have room for crazy but he said something about
- 27:17Speaker 13: being nervous.
- 27:19Speaker 9: He's the nervous robot.
- 27:20Speaker 13: They programmed you to be nervous but you can't be crazy?
- 27:23Speaker 12: It's going to be like C-3PO somehow.
- 27:25Speaker 6: That's because he's also part the cowardly lion.
- 27:28Speaker 8: Yeah. He definitely is.
- 27:30Speaker 5: To her Dorothy.
- 27:31Speaker 8: Which again, Star Wars is kind of being known for
- 27:34Speaker 8: ripping off Wizard of Oz as well as many other movies. So,
- 27:38Speaker 8: I mean, that's just, yeah, it all kind of falls
- 27:40Speaker 8: in there.
- 27:40Speaker 6: But in a weirdly prescient way, he was also Bender.
- 27:44Speaker 8: He definitely was. But, I mean, to me, like the look,
- 27:47Speaker 8: I'm like, so you kind of stole the Darth Vader
- 27:49Speaker 8: look and took the personality of 3PO. and gave him
- 27:53Speaker 8: a weird texan accent or whatever the hell that accent
- 27:56Speaker 8: i don't know where it was from but yeah i
- 27:59Speaker 8: was just like it was because i mean you had
- 28:01Speaker 8: dressed all in black you had a weird black helmet
- 28:04Speaker 8: so i mean that's the closest thing we really get
- 28:05Speaker 8: because even our villain isn't really darth he's a little
- 28:08Speaker 8: more grandma of tarkin i guess and.
- 28:10Speaker 12: Also kind of wondered too with that robot like is
- 28:13Speaker 12: that the way it was originally written or if that
- 28:15Speaker 12: was something that was changed in like post-production since he
- 28:19Speaker 12: has to be dubbed anyway like they decided to do
- 28:21Speaker 12: sort of a last minute change of his lines like
- 28:24Speaker 12: maybe Carolyn really didn't know exactly what she was reacting to.
- 28:30Speaker 8: Like or there's a version in Italy somewhere where he
- 28:32Speaker 8: just sounds normal and he's not Yahoo and as.
- 28:36Speaker 5: He jumps that.
- 28:38Speaker 11: I thought it was really funny when, like, I think
- 28:40Speaker 11: it was when they were finding the third launch site.
- 28:43Speaker 11: He said something about chauvinism.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:46Speaker 8: Robot chauvinism.
- 28:48Speaker 9: Robot chauvinism.
- 28:49Speaker 8: Robot chauvinism.
- 28:49Speaker 9: I thought that was very quotable. He said a lot
- 28:52Speaker 9: of defining one-liners. Like, can't keep a good robot down.
- 28:58Speaker 9: I'm like, that is true, sir.
- 29:00Speaker 8: Circuits, don't fail me now.
- 29:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:03Speaker 8: These are classics.
- 29:04Speaker 5: Come on, man.
- 29:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:06Speaker 8: Well, the rest of the crew there, I mean, is
- 29:11Speaker 8: it Acton? What is it? How do you even?
- 29:13Speaker 5: What is that guy? He was the most perplexing character.
- 29:16Speaker 8: Well, first of all, I was just like, that hair.
- 29:19Speaker 8: I'm like, to make a, I would say a dated reference,
- 29:21Speaker 8: but it's actually equal with this movie. He's just like
- 29:24Speaker 8: Willie Ames in space. It's just, why are you, for
- 29:27Speaker 8: God's sake, shave that down.
- 29:29Speaker 6: Yeah, what was that guy? He was kind of like a. Man,
- 29:33Speaker 6: I don't know what that dude was.
- 29:36Speaker 8: Well, he's like a mix, because they all, like you
- 29:38Speaker 8: start watching it, if you're going to, I mean, Stella's
- 29:40Speaker 8: obviously the Han Solo. I mean, she's the smuggler. She's
- 29:43Speaker 8: the cool one. She's also the pilot of the ship.
- 29:46Speaker 8: He's the navigator. So really, it's like they mixed him
- 29:51Speaker 8: with two characters, because he's the navigator, and if you
- 29:54Speaker 8: read on it, he was supposed to be this hideous creature,
- 29:57Speaker 8: but he wouldn't wear any makeup. He was a pissy bitch, obviously,
- 30:00Speaker 8: so he wouldn't get in the makeup. So really, he
- 30:02Speaker 8: was going to be a giant creature that was the
- 30:04Speaker 8: navigator of her ship. Isn't that chewy? I mean, isn't that...
- 30:08Speaker 8: But he also was pretty much chewy.
- 30:10Speaker 5: Calculating the logic of, we have this percent chance of...
- 30:13Speaker 5: And I thought, isn't that stolen? That is stolen, right?
- 30:17Speaker 12: From Star Wars.
- 30:18Speaker 5: Right, yeah.
- 30:18Speaker 8: But then they kind of steal the Luke storyline, because
- 30:22Speaker 8: then he becomes the one that kind of has the powers,
- 30:25Speaker 8: if you want to call it that.
- 30:26Speaker 13: Of course, yeah.
- 30:27Speaker 8: And he's got the lightsaber that they randomly bring up
- 30:30Speaker 8: out of nowhere.
- 30:31Speaker 5: You really can see the future.
- 30:33Speaker 8: They just jammed all these characters into one and gave.
- 30:36Speaker 3: It to him.
- 30:36Speaker 6: And then he's also kind of Michael Bolton.
- 30:40Speaker 9: Unfortunate. Yes.
- 30:43Speaker 13: Why?
- 30:44Speaker 8: Because he has no soul? Yeah, that's it. Exactly.
- 30:49Speaker 9: I thought it was strange how Stella, going through the
- 30:53Speaker 9: whole movie, wasn't phased or didn't seem to be like,
- 30:57Speaker 9: impressed by anything that was happening to her, anything that
- 31:01Speaker 9: was happening around her. But the scene where they go
- 31:04Speaker 9: in and see some computer, she's.
- 31:05Speaker 12: Like, wow!
- 31:07Speaker 5: These computers!
- 31:09Speaker 9: They can store memory! I'm just like, you just saw
- 31:13Speaker 9: David Hasselhoff just kick some alien's asses with the lightsaber.
- 31:19Speaker 9: And there's a southern accent robot, and you're impressed by this?
- 31:23Speaker 12: That was the only thing that.
- 31:24Speaker 8: They didn't have an internet.
- 31:25Speaker 9: Yeah, I guess so.
- 31:26Speaker 12: That perplexed me about this. I was like, all right, so...
- 31:29Speaker 12: And maybe I got confused on something here, so correct
- 31:32Speaker 12: me if I'm wrong, but the whole movie up until
- 31:35Speaker 12: that point was to find that planet where this weapon was,
- 31:39Speaker 12: but as soon as they found it, the Count shows up,
- 31:41Speaker 12: and he's like, I'm going to blow it up now.
- 31:42Speaker 12: I was like, wait, I.
- 31:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:45Speaker 5: Wait, what? You're blowing up.
- 31:46Speaker 12: I didn't understand.
- 31:47Speaker 5: It was a trap to get... Ah, see.
- 31:50Speaker 8: Pretty early on. It's the Admiral Ackbar moment. We gotta
- 31:56Speaker 8: have one of those.
- 31:57Speaker 3: All these power modules, what are they for? This is
- 32:00Speaker 3: the force that projected the red monsters into space. Then
- 32:04Speaker 3: this is the way they produced real monsters? No, not real.
- 32:08Speaker 3: The monsters never existed. These machines discharge metal projections of
- 32:13Speaker 3: monsters in our brains.
- 32:15Speaker 17: Incredible.
- 32:17Speaker 7: Images of monsters designed to drive men insane with fear.
- 32:20Speaker 3: With this kind of weapon, Count Xarth Arn can take
- 32:23Speaker 3: over the entire galaxy. But why didn't they finish us off?
- 32:26Speaker 3: When the red monsters were attacking us, suddenly they disappeared.
- 32:31Speaker 3: This machine controls how long the attack will last. It's
- 32:34Speaker 3: all done automatically. Programmed for a certain amount of time.
- 32:37Speaker 3: Usually the amount of time is enough to drive most
- 32:39Speaker 3: people insane. But we're not like most people.
- 32:42Speaker 8: Pretty early on I was just like that The exposition
- 32:46Speaker 8: in this thing. The minute and a half of rambling
- 32:50Speaker 8: on with techno mumbo jumbo with space thrown in front
- 32:53Speaker 8: of it. right yeah i mean it just goes on
- 32:56Speaker 8: forever and you're like i don't i don't care like
- 32:58Speaker 8: just stop just like don't.
- 33:00Speaker 9: Even bother it reminded me of like when i tried
- 33:02Speaker 9: to write a sci-fi short story when i was in
- 33:04Speaker 9: fifth grade and i i literally wrote like i was
- 33:07Speaker 9: like oh this is so cool like i thought it
- 33:09Speaker 9: was the best thing ever i was like and then
- 33:10Speaker 9: they go and they he picks up his laser phone
- 33:14Speaker 9: and the scene where she's like i think it's a
- 33:16Speaker 9: laser spear i'm like that's like me how when i
- 33:19Speaker 9: was writing those short stories and you must have been
- 33:21Speaker 9: just as excited as i was you wrote the plot
- 33:23Speaker 9: for this on imdb too yeah yeah and and somewhere
- 33:27Speaker 9: she set down that rifle ray yeah rifle ray wouldn't.
- 33:31Speaker 12: It be a ray rifle i don't know i remember
- 33:35Speaker 12: staring at the weapons laser spear Like, the weapons that
- 33:39Speaker 12: the Count's people are using, they have, like, the bat
- 33:41Speaker 12: wings on the side. I'm like, those are the most cumbersome,
- 33:43Speaker 12: impractical weapons I've ever seen. I mean, it's just, they'd
- 33:46Speaker 12: get entangled if you're near close quarters.
- 33:49Speaker 5: And what were the prisoners? That was the other thing.
- 33:52Speaker 5: They were like, hurry up, hurry up, hurry up. Dump
- 33:54Speaker 5: the uranium or whatever into the hole. And then they're like, okay,
- 33:57Speaker 5: now everybody take a break.
- 33:58Speaker 9: Yeah, five minute break. Like, what?
- 34:01Speaker 8: My favorite part of that whole thing was, like, we
- 34:04Speaker 8: get there and, like, And everybody in there is dressed
- 34:07Speaker 8: like a peasant from medieval times. Except for her, who's
- 34:11Speaker 8: magically wearing a leather bikini.
- 34:13Speaker 9: Where did that come from? She was not wearing that
- 34:15Speaker 9: in the opening scene. That is not explained at all.
- 34:18Speaker 9: It's just shamelessly there.
- 34:20Speaker 12: Why is she the only one?
- 34:21Speaker 9: Which is maybe the best way to handle that kind
- 34:24Speaker 9: of costume, I guess.
- 34:26Speaker 12: And that could have been explained so easily. Just have
- 34:29Speaker 12: a little five-second cutaway to where you... have the supervisor
- 34:33Speaker 12: for all the workers, and they're all working, and he's
- 34:36Speaker 12: just looking down at her. And then you would know
- 34:38Speaker 12: in that little moment that when she first got put
- 34:40Speaker 12: into prison, it's like, this is your uniform.
- 34:43Speaker 5: This is your uniform.
- 34:44Speaker 8: My favorite part. I mean, it's mostly a bathing suit
- 34:47Speaker 8: of sorts, but thank God it's got a collar. And
- 34:51Speaker 8: a popped collar.
- 34:51Speaker 12: Right.
- 34:53Speaker 8: This was cutting edge. This was the 80s.
- 34:55Speaker 5: Later, they had the sparkly popped collar.
- 34:57Speaker 3: Though, too.
- 34:58Speaker 8: She is stylish, let me tell you.
- 34:59Speaker 11: And at one point, like, the straps on the stomach disappear,
- 35:02Speaker 11: and it just gets even smaller.
- 35:05Speaker 8: Well, they change anyway. Like, she ends up in a
- 35:08Speaker 8: couple of variations. But, yeah, one time within the scene,
- 35:11Speaker 8: it's a changing, so.
- 35:12Speaker 11: And then you can, like, see that under her costume
- 35:15Speaker 11: when she's on one of the planets.
- 35:18Speaker 8: Well, you know.
- 35:18Speaker 12: But in the way of, like, exposition i like the
- 35:21Speaker 12: scenes to where there wasn't any because i think my
- 35:23Speaker 12: favorite moment of the entire movie was when you know
- 35:27Speaker 12: the emperor christopher plumber he's just like chip please stop
- 35:31Speaker 12: the passage of time and.
- 35:32Speaker 8: He's like i have this real all right he's got
- 35:36Speaker 8: powers i mean he told you he's got powers i think.
- 35:39Speaker 6: My favorite moment in the movie was whenever somebody would
- 35:43Speaker 6: just add an extra unnecessary word.
- 35:47Speaker 9: Like, yes, you can breathe on here, yes. Like, where
- 35:50Speaker 9: they asked if she could breathe on the planet, and
- 35:51Speaker 9: he said, like, yes twice in a weird way, and
- 35:54Speaker 9: I was like, that was odd, how he just said that.
- 35:55Speaker 6: And the editing is kind of like when a news anchor, like,
- 35:59Speaker 6: when the camera lingers on them just a little too long,
- 36:02Speaker 6: and they don't have anything else to say.
- 36:05Speaker 9: Whereas they're watching the monitor, and there's just a pause of, like,
- 36:08Speaker 9: they're watching the planet, and he's telling them, like, it's breathable,
- 36:10Speaker 9: and it's just a pause. Like, someone forgot their line
- 36:13Speaker 9: clearly in that shot. She's like... So what's the planet like?
- 36:16Speaker 9: I'm like, was someone supposed to say something?
- 36:19Speaker 6: Or when there's an exchange and they cut to the
- 36:22Speaker 6: other person who says nothing. Then they cut back again.
- 36:26Speaker 5: I love that.
- 36:26Speaker 12: That's a great shot.
- 36:27Speaker 9: They pointed the camera at the wrong person or something.
- 36:29Speaker 5: I got nothing. Okay, well, I'll continue then. Don't look
- 36:32Speaker 5: at me.
- 36:32Speaker 9: I don't have nothing to add.
- 36:34Speaker 5: Allow me to retort.
- 36:37Speaker 8: Well, the extra words might be, okay, their mouth's still
- 36:40Speaker 8: moving in Italian, so throw an extra yeah in there
- 36:44Speaker 8: or something. After the fact, I'm assuming they had to
- 36:47Speaker 8: do some creative dubbing since half the people weren't even
- 36:50Speaker 8: there to dub their own parts.
- 36:52Speaker 6: The exposition, you know, like early on, it's like, why
- 36:56Speaker 6: are we... But then late into the movie, it gets
- 37:00Speaker 6: to the point where they say, if we do this,
- 37:02Speaker 6: we could save billions of lives.
- 37:04Speaker 12: And I'm like, why?
- 37:06Speaker 8: Because I don't remember.
- 37:11Speaker 6: Anybody ever doing in the entire movie anything that makes
- 37:15Speaker 6: a life seem worthwhile?
- 37:17Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 37:18Speaker 6: I mean, nobody eats, nobody has a conversation about anything, nobody.
- 37:25Speaker 6: And then, you know, in the final speech, not to
- 37:28Speaker 6: ruin this movie, but it's just like, well, good has
- 37:33Speaker 6: triumphed over evil, but evil will come back again, and
- 37:37Speaker 6: the wheel will always turn. but for now we can.
- 37:44Speaker 8: Rest oh man oh man he was just setting up
- 37:49Speaker 8: the sequel i'm sure evil will be back and so
- 37:52Speaker 8: will we next.
- 37:54Speaker 12: Year speaking of evil and going back to the whole
- 37:56Speaker 12: costume thing i remember watching the and especially in the
- 38:00Speaker 12: scenes to where he confronts them at the basement of
- 38:03Speaker 12: the giant supercomputer planet ridden with troglodytes. And I was
- 38:10Speaker 12: watching him, and I thought, you know, there's a man
- 38:12Speaker 12: who knows how to work a cape.
- 38:14Speaker 8: There's a lot of other people.
- 38:15Speaker 12: It's like they just have a cape. It was like
- 38:17Speaker 12: his prop throughout the entire film.
- 38:19Speaker 5: He flipped it around.
- 38:20Speaker 12: Exactly.
- 38:20Speaker 5: He would wrap himself in it, I guess, if he
- 38:22Speaker 5: got cold on set.
- 38:23Speaker 1: I mean.
- 38:24Speaker 12: It's like between that and this.
- 38:25Speaker 9: There was Tim Curry in The Worst Witch. And now
- 38:29Speaker 9: this guy.
- 38:30Speaker 12: He did. He out-Tim Curry'd Tim Curry.
- 38:33Speaker 8: Joe Spinelli.
- 38:34Speaker 12: Put that on your resume. Just the laugh.
- 38:37Speaker 5: The laugh alone.
- 38:38Speaker 9: I can work this shit out in this kitchen.
- 38:40Speaker 12: I want that laugh as my ringtone on my phone.
- 38:42Speaker 8: That's what I'm saying. He's an entertaining villain.
- 38:46Speaker 6: Are you talking about the laugh that goes down the hall?
- 38:50Speaker 6: And then he gets in the elevator.
- 38:52Speaker 9: Yeah, I was like, I'm in the elevator, now I
- 38:53Speaker 9: can stop.
- 38:54Speaker 12: Yeah, I'm in the elevator.
- 38:55Speaker 6: I'm not laughing anymore.
- 38:56Speaker 9: No, there was like a weird... Okay, the transition.
- 38:59Speaker 1: Seven.
- 38:59Speaker 9: That scene where he was laughing... Oh, yeah. That scene
- 39:06Speaker 9: where he was walking down the hall and he was
- 39:07Speaker 9: laughing with his cape and it was just really cheesy.
- 39:10Speaker 9: I was like, oh, yeah, this just looks bad. And
- 39:12Speaker 9: all of a sudden, it just cut to this kind
- 39:14Speaker 9: of really awesome shot to him in the elevator. The
- 39:16Speaker 9: camera zoomed in and it was centered really... I was like,
- 39:19Speaker 9: that was... it was like something like almost sort of
- 39:23Speaker 9: maybe like if Martin Scorsese were to do a shot
- 39:26Speaker 9: of something in a space like it was almost that
- 39:28Speaker 9: good I really do think that like it zoomed in
- 39:30Speaker 9: in an interesting way and it caught me off guard.
- 39:32Speaker 8: Why don't we have Scorsese in space? He's really been
- 39:34Speaker 8: slacking on that specific genre.
- 39:37Speaker 9: Next movie.
- 39:38Speaker 8: I think we need to get on that, Scorsese.
- 39:40Speaker 12: But yeah, I mean, I like the fact that, you know,
- 39:42Speaker 12: the Count was channeling more Ming the Merciless than like, Vader,
- 39:48Speaker 12: which could have been easy to do, but it's like
- 39:50Speaker 12: he went a different route with that. I thought that
- 39:52Speaker 12: was a lot of fun.
- 39:53Speaker 8: Definitely a lot more Ming. And the whole thing feels
- 39:55Speaker 8: a lot more kind of Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers. It's
- 39:59Speaker 8: very serial-oriented in the way the acting kind of goes.
- 40:03Speaker 8: So it seems fitting, really, because those are kind of fun,
- 40:07Speaker 8: and it transfers over. I mean, as ridiculous as it is,
- 40:10Speaker 8: it's pretty damn fun.
- 40:14Speaker 5: How do they, because they talk about breathing a lot,
- 40:18Speaker 5: Are they able to breathe on this planet and this planet?
- 40:20Speaker 5: But then when the emperor's troops are using their gold vibrators...
- 40:27Speaker 5: I had a.
- 40:27Speaker 12: Lot of questions about that.
- 40:29Speaker 9: Yeah, exactly.
- 40:31Speaker 5: Wouldn't they just be bringing the vacuum of space into
- 40:34Speaker 5: the ship with them and they all die?
- 40:37Speaker 6: Don't they just dive out the window at some point?
- 40:40Speaker 9: Yeah, they do.
- 40:42Speaker 2: They do.
- 40:43Speaker 8: She had a helmet on by the end.
- 40:45Speaker 12: I was thinking, I thought, okay, two things. If you're
- 40:48Speaker 12: in that, A, how hard does that have to hurt
- 40:52Speaker 12: your head when you crash through this window?
- 40:55Speaker 9: You have to aim for the window.
- 40:56Speaker 12: And that was the other thing. What if they just
- 41:00Speaker 12: misshoot and don't even hit the ship at all?
- 41:02Speaker 9: They just keep going in this golden dildo forever in space.
- 41:06Speaker 9: That's their own movie, like, you know.
- 41:09Speaker 8: But I like the attitude. It was like kamikaze dildo.
- 41:12Speaker 8: It's like, we're going to fire ourselves in there, and
- 41:15Speaker 8: I don't know what's going to happen, but if I live,
- 41:17Speaker 8: I'm going to jump out and start shooting someone.
- 41:18Speaker 12: But I thought it was a cool idea at the
- 41:19Speaker 12: same time, because I didn't picture that, but I pictured, like, okay,
- 41:22Speaker 12: what if it was maybe submarines fighting, and they did
- 41:25Speaker 12: something like that, where you launch people in torpedoes, and
- 41:27Speaker 12: it goes through the hull, and then suddenly, like, not
- 41:30Speaker 12: only is the water rushing in, but then these soldiers
- 41:32Speaker 12: come out and start shooting people. I was like, it's
- 41:34Speaker 12: kind of a cool concept, just sort of, oddly done.
- 41:38Speaker 8: Yeah just i haven't seen that before i'll give.
- 41:41Speaker 6: Them that yeah it seemed to me like though to
- 41:45Speaker 6: launch yourself into a place and then throw open a
- 41:49Speaker 6: door and look over and shoot why wouldn't you just
- 41:52Speaker 6: make a window and have a turret where you would
- 41:54Speaker 6: go in there and be still protected, and you could
- 41:58Speaker 6: see where people were before you throw open a hatch
- 42:02Speaker 6: and look around like a groundhog.
- 42:04Speaker 5: Or why not just make that dildo a bomb? No,
- 42:08Speaker 5: you're losing me there.
- 42:12Speaker 8: That sounds dangerous.
- 42:14Speaker 9: No, it has to be two guys with machine guns.
- 42:15Speaker 5: It needs to be guys in a dildo.
- 42:17Speaker 8: That is no way to make a dildo.
- 42:18Speaker 12: But I also appreciate any bridge of a ship that
- 42:21Speaker 12: has the option of stairs outside Or the fireman's pole.
- 42:25Speaker 6: I did notice the fire pole.
- 42:27Speaker 8: Because towards the end, he walks around the pole to
- 42:30Speaker 8: go down the stairs. I was like, oh, I don't
- 42:32Speaker 8: want to go down the pole. Why would you want
- 42:34Speaker 8: to go down the pole?
- 42:35Speaker 9: You've got a cape.
- 42:36Speaker 12: Think how much more.
- 42:37Speaker 8: Fun it's going to be.
- 42:39Speaker 12: Maybe it gets hung up when you go down the pole.
- 42:41Speaker 8: Oh, no. It seemed like a missed opportunity to me. Dude,
- 42:44Speaker 8: there's a pole right there.
- 42:45Speaker 5: I liked his leadership as a general as well because
- 42:49Speaker 5: he walks out onto the catwalk and he's like, shoot
- 42:52Speaker 5: that guy. Shoot that guy.
- 42:54Speaker 12: And then later on, suddenly he has a gun. It's like, wait,
- 42:57Speaker 12: you had a gun?
- 42:59Speaker 8: But he just likes telling people what to do, you know.
- 43:01Speaker 5: Oh, we're shooting people now.
- 43:03Speaker 12: Well, then later on they send out these.
- 43:05Speaker 9: I'm a great leader. Yeah, they send.
- 43:07Speaker 12: Out these troopers that have heavy armor and they can
- 43:09Speaker 12: shoot crazy fast. I was like, why didn't you send
- 43:11Speaker 12: them to begin with? You let your men get killed
- 43:14Speaker 12: for five minutes before you send in the guys you
- 43:16Speaker 12: knew could take care of the problem.
- 43:17Speaker 8: Who's leading this battle?
- 43:21Speaker 12: And I was also confused about the structure of his ship.
- 43:23Speaker 12: I mean, I liked the hand, but every time it
- 43:27Speaker 12: was going into protection mode... the fingers curled, and I thought,
- 43:30Speaker 12: how bad does it have to suck to be like,
- 43:32Speaker 12: you know, maybe those are the crew's quarters on the
- 43:35Speaker 12: outside of the fingers. It's like, sucks to be you, man,
- 43:38Speaker 12: but we're in battle, so we got to let you.
- 43:40Speaker 9: Be the father first. It was a left hand, like
- 43:44Speaker 9: instead of a right.
- 43:45Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 43:46Speaker 9: It's just weird. It's just an odd choice to make
- 43:50Speaker 9: it left.
- 43:51Speaker 16: I don't know why.
- 43:51Speaker 12: But I think that's the first time in any movie
- 43:53Speaker 12: I've seen the structure of that ship, and I thought
- 43:56Speaker 12: the phrase, you know, Never Ending Story 2 ripped off
- 44:00Speaker 12: that design. It's probably the only time.
- 44:03Speaker 8: It's probably the only time anybody's seen it.
- 44:05Speaker 9: The inspiration for Never Ending Story.
- 44:06Speaker 8: Well, I mean, you mentioned the Choglodites, or as I
- 44:12Speaker 8: refer to them, Flying Cavemen.
- 44:14Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 44:15Speaker 8: Why were they just, like, they just spring out of nowhere?
- 44:19Speaker 8: That scene was one of the most confusing.
- 44:22Speaker 9: They had amazing pouncing abilities.
- 44:24Speaker 8: They did.
- 44:25Speaker 3: Um....
- 44:27Speaker 8: And then I was like, obviously this isn't a Starfleet vessel,
- 44:29Speaker 8: because Prime Directive says you shouldn't be beating up these cavemen.
- 44:33Speaker 8: They shouldn't even know about you yet.
- 44:35Speaker 5: You're doing it wrong.
- 44:37Speaker 9: They don't like robot chauvinism.
- 44:38Speaker 8: No, you're not supposed to. Don't be infecting them with
- 44:42Speaker 8: your robot chauvinism, dammit. You're ruining this planet.
- 44:46Speaker 3: Look!
- 44:47Speaker 4: Amazon's on horseback!
- 44:49Speaker 6: I hope they're friendly.
- 44:54Speaker 16: Soon find out.
- 44:57Speaker 12: The planet of women that's scantily clad yeah i mean
- 45:01Speaker 12: i like that i like that because that's definitely a
- 45:03Speaker 12: throwback to a lot of old b sci-fi but you
- 45:07Speaker 12: know there were just so many moments where it's like
- 45:10Speaker 12: we're here five minutes we gotta move.
- 45:11Speaker 5: On right yeah well what i was i thought it
- 45:15Speaker 5: was kind of funny that l when they first got
- 45:17Speaker 5: there said that they there must be this must be
- 45:19Speaker 5: some sort of civilization here uh you know And then
- 45:24Speaker 5: they go through the whole queen and the escape and everything.
- 45:28Speaker 5: And he said, let's hurry. He doesn't know anything about
- 45:31Speaker 5: them yet. He goes, let's hurry. The Amazon women will
- 45:34Speaker 5: soon be releasing their fighter jets or something. How did
- 45:38Speaker 5: you know that they had them? How did you figure
- 45:41Speaker 5: out that they had them? And how did you know
- 45:43Speaker 5: what they called themselves? We used to work for Batman.
- 45:48Speaker 8: Which character was that, though?
- 45:50Speaker 5: El, the robot.
- 45:52Speaker 13: Okay.
- 45:52Speaker 8: Because my problem was the other guy, the giant-haired dude.
- 45:57Speaker 8: Why did he know everything?
- 45:58Speaker 12: Because he could see the future.
- 46:00Speaker 8: But he would ramble off, like, not even future, just
- 46:04Speaker 8: random plot details that he shouldn't know he would magically know.
- 46:08Speaker 12: He'd seen the movie, though, before the movie was made.
- 46:10Speaker 8: I think so. That was his future. He just read
- 46:12Speaker 8: the Into the script.
- 46:13Speaker 12: And definitely going back, you could tell he loved Harryhausen
- 46:16Speaker 12: because when I was watching that statue, I was like,
- 46:18Speaker 12: this is exactly Talos from Jason the Argonaut. It's like
- 46:22Speaker 12: almost shot for shot.
- 46:23Speaker 8: Yeah, the whole beach scene looked exactly like... I mean,
- 46:26Speaker 8: it's like they found the same beach.
- 46:28Speaker 12: That's what I was so amazed by.
- 46:29Speaker 5: I was like, this looks like the exact same set.
- 46:31Speaker 6: The best person working on that movie, I think, was
- 46:34Speaker 6: the location scout. They had some nice spots.
- 46:39Speaker 8: It looked pretty good, yeah.
- 46:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 46:41Speaker 9: They had the field planet, the snow planet, the water planet.
- 46:47Speaker 5: They did beat Lucas to Hoth.
- 46:52Speaker 9: This was before? That's true, it was 80.
- 46:57Speaker 8: I had a whole, if we're on that, I started
- 46:59Speaker 8: noticing all of them. They did the Hoth before he did.
- 47:03Speaker 8: They captured her. They had a floating city. They had
- 47:07Speaker 8: her captured and were hanging her upside down and carrying
- 47:10Speaker 8: her off to potentially.
- 47:11Speaker 5: Go eat her.
- 47:12Speaker 8: That's straight out of Jedi. Most of these weird, I
- 47:16Speaker 8: don't know.
- 47:17Speaker 9: That was a weird kind of Terry Gilliam moment too
- 47:19Speaker 9: when they were just carrying her off Like the camera
- 47:21Speaker 9: had this fish eye lens. I was like, this, wow, okay.
- 47:24Speaker 9: Kind of a break in tone.
- 47:26Speaker 8: It was interesting. A lot of that, it's interesting that,
- 47:30Speaker 8: you know, for being a ripoff of Star Wars, they
- 47:32Speaker 8: kind of beat Star Wars to a couple of different
- 47:34Speaker 8: little plot points there.
- 47:36Speaker 6: Yeah, it's not like the Star Wars exposition and storylines
- 47:41Speaker 6: make all that much sense. It just feels like you
- 47:44Speaker 6: have maybe just enough to go on to get through
- 47:47Speaker 6: the little passage.
- 47:48Speaker 9: It's just done more coherently.
- 47:49Speaker 8: I think, yeah, they sell it a little better. You're
- 47:51Speaker 8: just like, oh, okay, I'll buy that.
- 47:53Speaker 9: These guys are just like, what? Okay, but that one part,
- 47:58Speaker 9: when they were over on the women's planet.
- 48:04Speaker 9: Where they're taking the robot.
- 48:05Speaker 6: The lady's planet.
- 48:06Speaker 9: The lady planet. They're taking the robot, and the woman
- 48:10Speaker 9: just jumps out of frame and shoots him.
- 48:12Speaker 5: That was crazy.
- 48:14Speaker 9: Because you don't see that in movies. Usually when something happens,
- 48:17Speaker 9: it cuts to someone with a gun jumping out. But
- 48:19Speaker 9: they were just walking, and she just ran into him
- 48:21Speaker 9: off frame.
- 48:23Speaker 12: It was really weird and jarring.
- 48:24Speaker 8: She probably just missed the cue, and they didn't know.
- 48:26Speaker 9: They cut him off mid-conversation, too. Like, we don't want
- 48:28Speaker 9: to die. She just jumped out and shoots him. You're like,
- 48:31Speaker 9: holy shit, what?
- 48:33Speaker 5: What is this?
- 48:36Speaker 9: That was probably the most surprising part of the movie.
- 48:40Speaker 8: I can't believe when they killed L myself.
- 48:43Speaker 4: I know.
- 48:44Speaker 5: I cried a little bit. I know.
- 48:45Speaker 8: It was pretty sad because they beat the hell out
- 48:47Speaker 8: of him.
- 48:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:49Speaker 8: I was pretty sure we'd see him again. But still,
- 48:52Speaker 8: it was a sad moment because they didn't just disconnect him.
- 48:55Speaker 12: And see, that's something else that they beat Lucas to because,
- 48:58Speaker 12: you know, C-3PO.
- 48:59Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 49:02Speaker 6: I think the thing that surprised me was when that guy.
- 49:06Speaker 12: Michael Bolton, act on.
- 49:09Speaker 8: Willie Ames, whatever.
- 49:10Speaker 6: Yeah, when he was dying, he said, I'm no use
- 49:17Speaker 6: anymore at this time.
- 49:20Speaker 12: At this time.
- 49:21Speaker 9: Didn't need that extra.
- 49:24Speaker 5: What was that for? At this time.
- 49:26Speaker 8: How about right at the same time, she's looking at
- 49:28Speaker 8: him going, but you never die.
- 49:29Speaker 9: Enough with the dangly personable... Just don't... You never die?
- 49:34Speaker 8: Like, this happens this weekend, and you never die.
- 49:37Speaker 9: I mean, what the hell?
- 49:38Speaker 8: Yeah, you can breathe here, yes.
- 49:38Speaker 6: Yeah, that made it sound like it was a TV show.
- 49:41Speaker 8: I know. Like, remember last week you didn't die?
- 49:43Speaker 6: All the other episodes.
- 49:44Speaker 12: And it was also very much, you know, a Monty
- 49:46Speaker 12: Python-esque sort of thing, too, because it's like, you know,
- 49:48Speaker 12: it's just a flesh wound.
- 49:49Speaker 5: No, no, no, I'm dying.
- 49:51Speaker 2: I'm dying.
- 49:52Speaker 5: I'm dying.
- 49:53Speaker 12: I know they just grazed my arm, but I'm dying.
- 49:56Speaker 8: And by the way, I'll disappear. Why does everybody that
- 49:59Speaker 8: dies disappear? Whether they're human or robot, whatever.
- 50:02Speaker 9: Also, I will say this squid judge thing kind of
- 50:07Speaker 9: reminded me of the weird squid thing in Dune. That's
- 50:12Speaker 9: immediately what was my first thought when I saw it.
- 50:14Speaker 9: But he looked like whoever the actor they had filming
- 50:16Speaker 9: for that, he looked like he was literally reading the script.
- 50:19Speaker 9: He was looking down. You have to go to.
- 50:22Speaker 6: Yeah, but he's also operating on a squid thing.
- 50:26Speaker 8: He's reading it, but he's following along with his squid fingers.
- 50:30Speaker 8: You have to.
- 50:31Speaker 9: He's handling other trials because he has extra arms.
- 50:34Speaker 12: Yeah, but that's very much Invaders from Mars right there.
- 50:38Speaker 8: Which I think was another one he referenced as being
- 50:41Speaker 8: Invaders from Mars and Forbidden Planet as being a big
- 50:43Speaker 8: influence on him. So you can kind of see, again,
- 50:46Speaker 8: how much he's invested in this type of movie and
- 50:49Speaker 8: And really loves it. And I think that's still like
- 50:52Speaker 8: what comes through it. It is ridiculous as many of
- 50:55Speaker 8: the problems are. It feels genuine still. Only occasionally. And
- 51:00Speaker 8: that's what I'm trying to decide is what stuff got
- 51:03Speaker 8: jammed in after Star Wars. Because I'm like, you know
- 51:06Speaker 8: that lightsaber wasn't there.
- 51:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:08Speaker 8: There's no way that was written in there because nobody
- 51:10Speaker 8: would have known what the hell it was. But all
- 51:12Speaker 8: of a sudden, because there's no explanation, they never mentioned
- 51:15Speaker 8: that they had it before. I mean, they're running around
- 51:17Speaker 8: with blasters. Well, The whole rest of the movie.
- 51:20Speaker 5: When he was hiding it behind his back, it looked
- 51:22Speaker 5: like a gun that he had had earlier. It's not
- 51:25Speaker 5: a gun.
- 51:25Speaker 8: It doesn't come out as a gun.
- 51:27Speaker 9: He holds it really weird.
- 51:29Speaker 8: Actually, the effect didn't look as bad as I expected.
- 51:32Speaker 8: It looks kind of iffy in the first Star Wars anyway.
- 51:35Speaker 8: It looks... a little worse than that but it's still
- 51:38Speaker 8: better than i expected but it didn't match like he
- 51:41Speaker 8: wasn't holding it right i was like it was like
- 51:43Speaker 8: he was holding a different type of weapon and didn't
- 51:46Speaker 8: know that's what they were going to animate in sometimes.
- 51:48Speaker 9: Yeah i mean like when he would say like hit
- 51:51Speaker 9: a robot with it like the lightsaber would totally overlap
- 51:55Speaker 9: like the outline of the robot like they animated it
- 51:57Speaker 9: over the outline it didn't make like there was no
- 52:01Speaker 9: hit detection it was yeah.
- 52:04Speaker 12: I just remember seeing those two robots, and I was like,
- 52:08Speaker 12: this is the best that the Count has got. It's
- 52:11Speaker 12: just these two robots.
- 52:12Speaker 5: With pirate swords. And see, I need to go back
- 52:14Speaker 5: and watch.
- 52:15Speaker 9: And angry eyebrows, got to make that there so you
- 52:18Speaker 9: know they're evil.
- 52:20Speaker 12: But was there an earlier scene to where, am I
- 52:23Speaker 12: getting David Hasselhoff and Michael Bolton? confused in my memory
- 52:27Speaker 12: to where a little bit there was a scene earlier
- 52:30Speaker 12: in the movie to where he had the michael bolton
- 52:33Speaker 12: character on his ship am i incorrect in recalling it
- 52:36Speaker 12: like near the very beginning i could have sworn there
- 52:40Speaker 12: was but i guess it.
- 52:41Speaker 8: Was you can tell the difference because hasselhoff is wearing
- 52:45Speaker 8: eyeliner yeah.
- 52:46Speaker 12: I think they both are.
- 52:47Speaker 6: No, I don't think the movies do have a little
- 52:50Speaker 6: bit of a resemblance.
- 52:52Speaker 8: But yeah, when they did that close-up on him, I
- 52:54Speaker 8: was like, is he wearing that? Like, he was wearing
- 52:58Speaker 8: almost as much as she was.
- 53:02Speaker 9: Also, their ship had a really, what looked like just
- 53:05Speaker 9: kind of impractical front view window. Like it was just
- 53:10Speaker 9: like two real small windows and they're really far apart.
- 53:12Speaker 9: So you could kind of see, only see what's to
- 53:14Speaker 9: either side of you in space. You're like, here's this planet.
- 53:17Speaker 9: I'm like, well, you're lucky. Like the one eyeball is
- 53:20Speaker 9: aimed right in front of it. Cause you can't, it's like, cause.
- 53:23Speaker 12: I saw that as a pilot. It's almost like when
- 53:24Speaker 12: you have a bad wiper on your car, you keep
- 53:26Speaker 12: like looking around the street. Yeah. I feel like it
- 53:31Speaker 12: was that same way with that vehicle.
- 53:32Speaker 5: It was a peripheral vision. You couldn't see him straight
- 53:36Speaker 5: in front of you, only on his side.
- 53:38Speaker 6: It's like a hammerhead shark. You've got the two eyes
- 53:42Speaker 6: looking different directions. Yeah, the thing about that lightsaber battle, though,
- 53:49Speaker 6: was that at some point he decided to focus for
- 53:53Speaker 6: a while on the one robot.
- 53:54Speaker 8: And that's what gets you in trouble. And the other.
- 53:56Speaker 6: Robot thought for a long time before he decided to take.
- 54:00Speaker 8: Advantage of the situation. He had to process.
- 54:04Speaker 6: Yeah, I picture him sitting out of frame, like maybe
- 54:07Speaker 6: sitting down in a chair and thinking about it. Like,
- 54:11Speaker 6: you know, he's really pointing that thing at the other
- 54:15Speaker 6: guy a lot. And he's not really paying any attention
- 54:20Speaker 6: to me. You know what I think I could do
- 54:24Speaker 6: is attack him.
- 54:25Speaker 9: They did seem a bit lacking.
- 54:28Speaker 8: He's got 1978 computer systems. He's only got 64-bit, man.
- 54:31Speaker 12: I was going to say, maybe you're just putting too
- 54:34Speaker 12: much into it. Maybe they just had one stop-motion animator,
- 54:37Speaker 12: and so he could only animate one at a time.
- 54:40Speaker 8: So the other guy... The other one is just.
- 54:43Speaker 12: Not being moved.
- 54:44Speaker 8: Yeah, he's just sitting over there.
- 54:47Speaker 12: But apart from the giant hand ship, none of the
- 54:52Speaker 12: other ship designs really jumped out at me. or made
- 54:55Speaker 12: an impression.
- 54:56Speaker 9: The city one looked like it'd be interesting, but they
- 54:57Speaker 9: never got a good close-up of it, so I could
- 54:59Speaker 9: never really tell what it looked like.
- 55:01Speaker 12: And not only that, but they had this giant floating
- 55:02Speaker 12: city that was just empty.
- 55:04Speaker 8: Well, they cleared them out. They said they did their
- 55:07Speaker 8: little evacuation, but I'm like, that seemed pretty quick. That's
- 55:09Speaker 8: what I'm saying.
- 55:10Speaker 12: If you're evacuating this entire gigantic thing, that was pretty
- 55:14Speaker 12: darn quick.
- 55:14Speaker 9: It just looked interesting, because it looked like the only
- 55:17Speaker 9: shit model they bothered to paint.
- 55:19Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 55:20Speaker 8: Well, that was the thing about the.
- 55:22Speaker 9: package or whatever.
- 55:24Speaker 8: The other ships, like you were saying, they didn't... It's
- 55:26Speaker 8: because none of them were really... There was no theme.
- 55:29Speaker 8: There was no uniform. They were all just random. Everything
- 55:33Speaker 8: was just, and this sort of looks like this, and
- 55:35Speaker 8: we glued some stuff over here.
- 55:36Speaker 5: I really enjoyed, especially when you talk about just random things,
- 55:42Speaker 5: when Thor was on the ship, on Hoth, trying to
- 55:47Speaker 5: get it restarted after... acton had stolen the little drive
- 55:52Speaker 5: or whatever um and he's just like pulling random things
- 55:57Speaker 5: from under the table you know they weren't connected to
- 56:00Speaker 5: anything they were supposed to be and he was just
- 56:02Speaker 5: touching a little lighted thing to it and like well
- 56:04Speaker 5: that one doesn't work and he just pulls out and
- 56:06Speaker 5: touches something and that one doesn't work and it just
- 56:08Speaker 5: i i don't know it was it's like okay somebody
- 56:11Speaker 5: just get me a bunch of things that could run
- 56:13Speaker 5: a ship and we'll make it Make the green-faced guy
- 56:16Speaker 5: touch a light to him.
- 56:17Speaker 9: And what was that weird laser-like thing that he just
- 56:19Speaker 9: decided to play with instead of doing whatever, you know,
- 56:21Speaker 9: the million other important, you know, life-threatening things that he
- 56:24Speaker 9: should be doing on this show? You know, I'm just
- 56:26Speaker 9: going to hang out and just play with my laser
- 56:28Speaker 9: beam until someone comes and knocks me on the back
- 56:31Speaker 9: of the head.
- 56:31Speaker 8: Why was that there?
- 56:34Speaker 12: He was very amused by it, whatever it was.
- 56:36Speaker 8: He was really stoked.
- 56:37Speaker 9: Like, his facial expressions, like, I think that was the
- 56:39Speaker 9: most excited he was in the whole movie was him
- 56:41Speaker 9: playing with that thing.
- 56:42Speaker 12: I mean, just very self-contented. It's just like, yeah, I rock.
- 56:50Speaker 5: And another touch is that. L referred to himself as
- 56:55Speaker 5: like the space police or something like that. Um, you know,
- 56:58Speaker 5: when they were, he.
- 56:59Speaker 9: Literally said, it's the police. Like they were, the line
- 57:01Speaker 9: was like, Oh no, it's the police.
- 57:03Speaker 5: Right.
- 57:04Speaker 9: It was just weird. And it said like that.
- 57:07Speaker 12: Space version of Dukes of Hazzard.
- 57:08Speaker 5: Right. It just, um, I was laughing those first few
- 57:13Speaker 5: minutes of the chase scene and why does one come on?
- 57:16Speaker 5: And then the other come on, they're like bantering back
- 57:18Speaker 5: and forth while they're supposedly chasing each other. And, uh,
- 57:24Speaker 5: I don't.
- 57:25Speaker 12: Like that, but it's like you have the robot. I
- 57:27Speaker 12: got the impression early on that, like, Al and Atkin
- 57:30Speaker 12: were in different ships.
- 57:32Speaker 3: Right.
- 57:32Speaker 12: And then suddenly it's like they're in the same ship
- 57:34Speaker 12: but on different monitors. I was like, it was just
- 57:37Speaker 12: very weird.
- 57:38Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 57:38Speaker 8: Well, and the set design. Some of it's awesome, but
- 57:41Speaker 8: then those big, like, chairs that they're in, which change color,
- 57:45Speaker 8: or I guess they change ship, because early on it
- 57:47Speaker 8: just looks like a giant eggplant sitting there.
- 57:49Speaker 5: Well, did you notice the chair that.
- 57:52Speaker 12: on the female planet, the main throne that the queen
- 57:57Speaker 12: was sitting on, it was very phallic. Did you notice this?
- 58:00Speaker 12: I was like, is that purposeful? Is that incidental? Am
- 58:03Speaker 12: I like looking too much into the shape?
- 58:06Speaker 8: Maybe you're reading a little too much.
- 58:08Speaker 13: I expected the Freudian undertones.
- 58:14Speaker 8: There's a lot of this that feels very Futurama, I
- 58:16Speaker 8: would say. It seems right at home in that universe, actually.
- 58:21Speaker 8: But if we're going to the thrones, I did want to, like,
- 58:25Speaker 8: jump ahead when we get to the emperor's throne at
- 58:27Speaker 8: the inn. That was awesome, and I kind of want one.
- 58:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 58:30Speaker 8: But at the same time, it almost looked like the
- 58:32Speaker 8: ornamentation you would see on a 70s bowling trophy.
- 58:35Speaker 9: It was just that.
- 58:37Speaker 8: It's awesome, though, but I'm just like, that... It doesn't
- 58:40Speaker 8: strike me as outer space, but it's awesome, and I
- 58:42Speaker 8: need one.
- 58:43Speaker 12: On that ship where they were at with the Emperor,
- 58:45Speaker 12: I just remember thinking, that's a tremendous waste of space
- 58:49Speaker 12: they've got there. I mean, look at how big the
- 58:51Speaker 12: walls and the ceiling and everything are. It's cavernous, and there's, like,
- 58:54Speaker 12: nobody there, and there's nothing there. There's no computers. There's
- 58:57Speaker 12: no windows. It's just, it's like the warehouse portion of
- 59:01Speaker 12: the ship, and they just put it there.
- 59:03Speaker 9: That's right.
- 59:04Speaker 8: They hadn't made the pickup yet of all the, you know,
- 59:06Speaker 8: they got to haul in all the stuff that's their food.
- 59:10Speaker 5: And then they had the the shuttle uh ship that
- 59:13Speaker 5: they take down to the little window the window ship
- 59:17Speaker 5: and like you don't even your people can't even fit
- 59:19Speaker 5: into it like he had to duck down and bend
- 59:22Speaker 5: backwards to even get into like that's the most impractical
- 59:25Speaker 5: shuttle I've ever seen. There's no, nothing driving the thing.
- 59:28Speaker 5: It's just a metal and glass. Oh, the controls are easy, right?
- 59:33Speaker 5: You should have no trouble with it.
- 59:34Speaker 9: Why don't you fly?
- 59:35Speaker 5: You should have no trouble with this.
- 59:37Speaker 12: It's easy.
- 59:38Speaker 8: Well, we're talking impractical. I mean, I brought it up
- 59:41Speaker 8: to her, but I was just like, it really struck
- 59:43Speaker 8: me in this. And you see the cover of like
- 59:46Speaker 8: the cheesy pulp sci-fi stories. And it's like, those outfits
- 59:49Speaker 8: always look awesome on the girls, but watching her walk
- 59:52Speaker 8: around and I'm like, this is, This is so impractical.
- 59:55Speaker 8: It makes no sense. And she was supposed to be
- 59:58Speaker 8: like that the whole movie, actually. She was supposed to
- 1:00:00Speaker 8: have the leather bikini thing going on as her look.
- 1:00:04Speaker 8: And then midway in, the American producers got involved and
- 1:00:07Speaker 8: were like, again, if it's not being caught up on
- 1:00:10Speaker 8: the sex end of it, it's money. They were like,
- 1:00:13Speaker 8: we don't think we're going to be able to show
- 1:00:14Speaker 8: this on television with her in the whole movie like that.
- 1:00:17Speaker 8: Somehow it's okay for the second half to not.
- 1:00:20Speaker 13: Be like that.
- 1:00:20Speaker 9: It's okay for like 90% of the crew to be
- 1:00:23Speaker 9: in that.
- 1:00:24Speaker 6: Is that when they put her in the sandwich bag?
- 1:00:26Speaker 8: Yeah, then she's in a plastic bag the whole rest
- 1:00:28Speaker 8: of it.
- 1:00:28Speaker 13: I mean, if she was wearing that in the place
- 1:00:30Speaker 13: where it was really cold, that.
- 1:00:31Speaker 8: Would just be like, It would make a little more sense.
- 1:00:34Speaker 13: It would just make her seem like an idiot. Come on.
- 1:00:37Speaker 8: Well, I mean, we've had some good thoughts on it. Marlena,
- 1:00:40Speaker 8: you did not seem as thrilled. So with the alternate take,
- 1:00:43Speaker 8: what was your thoughts on this?
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: On the movie?
- 1:00:45Speaker 12: Yes.
- 1:00:47Speaker 13: It was really hard for me to watch without the
- 1:00:49Speaker 13: assistance of Crow and Gypsy.
- 1:00:54Speaker 8: That's true. It is asking for that treatment. Yeah.
- 1:00:58Speaker 5: They would have had fun with it.
- 1:00:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:01:00Speaker 8: And we would have had fun hanging out with them.
- 1:01:02Speaker 12: I like how you say they would have had fun
- 1:01:04Speaker 12: with it. It's like a past relative. She would have
- 1:01:07Speaker 12: had a good time if she were here tonight.
- 1:01:09Speaker 6: In spirit she was.
- 1:01:12Speaker 8: It's true because they're not around anymore. In spirit they
- 1:01:15Speaker 8: are in another way now, but it's just not the
- 1:01:17Speaker 8: same without their little silhouettes up there. So I don't know.
- 1:01:21Speaker 8: Aside from that.
- 1:01:23Speaker 13: I mean, her outfits were really fun. It was campy.
- 1:01:26Speaker 13: It was fun. I didn't realize... To, like, the end
- 1:01:30Speaker 13: of the movie, that that was the Hoff.
- 1:01:34Speaker 6: Yeah, he's... You know, I had the exact opposite. I
- 1:01:37Speaker 6: knew he was in it, and I'm like, is that
- 1:01:39Speaker 6: too David Hasselhoff?
- 1:01:41Speaker 8: And it wasn't.
- 1:01:43Speaker 5: No, he looks like Michael Bolton. What is this? I
- 1:01:47Speaker 5: kept wondering when he was going to show up, and
- 1:01:49Speaker 5: I was like.
- 1:01:50Speaker 9: He's not the robot, is he? I was like, David
- 1:01:52Speaker 9: Hasselhoff looks really skinny and weird. Yeah, he looks like.
- 1:01:56Speaker 12: The Gautier guy or something.
- 1:01:58Speaker 9: I was like, yeah.
- 1:02:00Speaker 5: Guys, what's going on?
- 1:02:01Speaker 12: I remember looking, and I was like, he hasn't aged
- 1:02:03Speaker 12: that much, but.
- 1:02:06Speaker 8: Well, watch him running in slow motion on the beach
- 1:02:09Speaker 8: in Toronto Double D and you'll change your thoughts.
- 1:02:12Speaker 13: It's how I met your mother syndrome.
- 1:02:14Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 1:02:14Speaker 13: He got older and became someone else completely.
- 1:02:16Speaker 8: Yeah, that's kind of what happened.
- 1:02:18Speaker 9: Was the mask he was wearing ever explained?
- 1:02:21Speaker 4: Basically.
- 1:02:22Speaker 8: Stole that from something.
- 1:02:24Speaker 5: Yeah, so it was a shield something. It was a
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: something shield.
- 1:02:28Speaker 9: There's a caveman.
- 1:02:29Speaker 8: I assumed he was, yeah, playing a god, which happens
- 1:02:32Speaker 8: in every sci-fi movie.
- 1:02:33Speaker 5: It was a something shield.
- 1:02:35Speaker 8: Zardoz mask is what it was. It's Zardoz. Yeah, the
- 1:02:40Speaker 8: same mask he's wearing in Clash of the Titans, I'm
- 1:02:42Speaker 8: pretty sure. That thing keeps turning up. I don't know.
- 1:02:46Speaker 13: This movie really made me wonder how I don't flunk
- 1:02:52Speaker 13: out of college. I can't focus on anything. I did
- 1:02:57Speaker 13: my nails the entire time.
- 1:02:58Speaker 12: I don't think that's you.
- 1:03:00Speaker 6: I had a really hard time keeping my face clean.
- 1:03:04Speaker 6: directed in the general direction yeah of this.
- 1:03:07Speaker 9: Movie the dog fight at the end was where it
- 1:03:09Speaker 9: just kind of lost me it literally felt like they
- 1:03:11Speaker 9: looped they did over it for like 10 minutes like
- 1:03:15Speaker 9: it did not end it was the same shot of
- 1:03:17Speaker 9: the golden dildo and the people shooting and the guy
- 1:03:19Speaker 9: going kill them and then i was like i've seen
- 1:03:22Speaker 9: this it's almost surreal like it's like a fever dream
- 1:03:26Speaker 9: is this.
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: Like the movie Speed, where they loop the video.
- 1:03:30Speaker 9: Yeah. That's exactly what... And you start to notice something's
- 1:03:34Speaker 9: off after a while.
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: You're like, what?
- 1:03:35Speaker 8: Wait a minute. He already put that short pass.
- 1:03:37Speaker 9: And it just takes you a while.
- 1:03:40Speaker 5: It's as long as the... chase scene, the motorcycle chase
- 1:03:44Speaker 5: scene with the cops and the thing with two heads.
- 1:03:47Speaker 8: The hell you say. I don't think anything is that long.
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: That's the longest chase scene. Unnecessary chase scene ever.
- 1:03:53Speaker 8: But I'll give you, that's the, if there's a weak
- 1:03:55Speaker 8: point in this movie, I mean, that's the point where
- 1:03:57Speaker 8: you're like, okay, really? Let's start around. That's my own.
- 1:04:01Speaker 8: Other than that, this is flawless. This is flawless cinema.
- 1:04:05Speaker 9: I'm sure it won all the Oscars out here.
- 1:04:06Speaker 8: Yeah, that scene is a little tedious, I'll give you that.
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: Well, again, it's a flawed masterpiece.
- 1:04:12Speaker 9: It is.
- 1:04:13Speaker 8: I mean, by the end, I was just like.
- 1:04:15Speaker 6: Like Citizen Kane and Vertigo.
- 1:04:20Speaker 9: Star Crash is Star Crash.
- 1:04:23Speaker 8: It would be on my list.
- 1:04:24Speaker 6: But you could say the same thing about Madame Bovary.
- 1:04:28Speaker 6: Because it begins from his point of view, and then
- 1:04:30Speaker 6: it shifts to hers. But when asked about it, Flaubert said,
- 1:04:35Speaker 6: life is like that.
- 1:04:37Speaker 8: And then we looped a scene over and over again.
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:04:40Speaker 12: I've just been distracted by the autograph there. And just
- 1:04:43Speaker 12: the very fact that she put to Brian... Brian is
- 1:04:46Speaker 12: in quotation marks. It's a weird nickname.
- 1:04:51Speaker 9: I'll sign it to Brian.
- 1:04:53Speaker 12: She knows your true identity. We'll call you Brian.
- 1:04:57Speaker 8: She's the only one. She does a drawing. I like
- 1:05:01Speaker 8: the star. No, it's the star.
- 1:05:06Speaker 12: It's a disclaimer asterisk.
- 1:05:08Speaker 5: You turn it over to the back of the autograph.
- 1:05:11Speaker 8: It says, this is Nolan Boyd representing It's actually signed
- 1:05:16Speaker 8: by Brian in quotation marks. This is a total fraud.
- 1:05:20Speaker 8: That's what it says right there.
- 1:05:21Speaker 5: Is that a question mark?
- 1:05:22Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 1:05:23Speaker 5: She did it. She's the Riddler. I think it's supposed
- 1:05:26Speaker 5: to be a heart. Maybe it's a heart. She's like,
- 1:05:28Speaker 5: I've got this negative space. I need to just.
- 1:05:30Speaker 8: Just scribble something out.
- 1:05:31Speaker 12: Maybe it's like one of the explosions of the ships.
- 1:05:34Speaker 6: Or maybe you're all thinking that was like the ending.
- 1:05:38Speaker 6: Maybe that was the beginning. Does this pen work?
- 1:05:40Speaker 9: It's the tester's spot.
- 1:05:43Speaker 6: I'm guessing that's her navel half hidden under the... It
- 1:05:47Speaker 6: bothers me when you can't see a navel because it
- 1:05:49Speaker 6: makes me think somebody's a replicant.
- 1:05:52Speaker 12: It's like the movie The Brood. It's like she just.
- 1:05:56Speaker 12: That or Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
- 1:05:58Speaker 9: One or the other.
- 1:05:59Speaker 5: And from here, the red part that would be the
- 1:06:02Speaker 5: codpiece front looks kind of like the Autobot symbol.
- 1:06:05Speaker 9: It does. I was going to say it looks like Cobra.
- 1:06:08Speaker 9: She's Autobot.
- 1:06:10Speaker 5: That would be one badass Baroness, wouldn't it?
- 1:06:12Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:06:14Speaker 8: I'd watch that. That seems fine to me.
- 1:06:16Speaker 5: And we're all staring at the picture. Yes, we are.
- 1:06:20Speaker 9: For those listening.
- 1:06:20Speaker 8: Because it got dark and you couldn't look out the window.
- 1:06:23Speaker 5: You're going to have to put the picture up because
- 1:06:25Speaker 5: people will just be like, God, I wish I knew
- 1:06:26Speaker 5: what they were talking about.
- 1:06:28Speaker 8: I'll post it.
- 1:06:28Speaker 12: It doesn't matter.
- 1:06:31Speaker 8: Okay, what else? Anything we forgot to hit? I don't know.
- 1:06:36Speaker 8: It's pretty epic. I don't know what else we can do.
- 1:06:39Speaker 12: I mean, it's very much one of those everything-in-the-kitchen-sink movies.
- 1:06:43Speaker 12: We could talk here for a long time and then
- 1:06:45Speaker 12: afterwards be like, oh, wait, we forgot about this.
- 1:06:47Speaker 8: I can't believe we didn't even go into that.
- 1:06:49Speaker 6: I just wish the story was a little better because
- 1:06:52Speaker 6: a lot of the cheesy effects have a kind of
- 1:06:55Speaker 6: primitive charm that I would like to see them really
- 1:06:58Speaker 6: working in the service.
- 1:06:59Speaker 5: Of the story.
- 1:07:00Speaker 4: Yeah, mm-hmm.
- 1:07:01Speaker 6: I mean, if you had a really tight story, that
- 1:07:04Speaker 6: would just be so amazing to see these pastel colors
- 1:07:09Speaker 6: and the sky and some of the weird landscape effects.
- 1:07:16Speaker 12: Or just the weird effect of the red aliens that
- 1:07:19Speaker 12: get into your brain and make you think they're monsters.
- 1:07:22Speaker 12: It's like there's a liquid light show that just kind
- 1:07:24Speaker 12: of pours into the ship at some point in time.
- 1:07:26Speaker 12: I was like, this is either really cheesy or really cool.
- 1:07:31Speaker 12: I can't decide.
- 1:07:32Speaker 8: The first time, I swear, I thought she reached up
- 1:07:34Speaker 8: to her head and said, my hair.
- 1:07:37Speaker 12: I was pretty sure that's what she said. But I
- 1:07:40Speaker 12: cracked up at that.
- 1:07:41Speaker 8: My hair.
- 1:07:44Speaker 12: Such a funny line. And then what's his name?
- 1:07:47Speaker 6: Michael Bolton goes, we just survived an attack by the
- 1:07:50Speaker 6: most powerful.
- 1:07:51Speaker 5: Weapon in the universe.
- 1:07:52Speaker 9: Yeah, congratulations. Mike, he was really excited.
- 1:07:55Speaker 8: Cross that off my bucket list. The best part is
- 1:07:58Speaker 8: then she does this little hop and is like, that
- 1:08:00Speaker 8: was awesome. Like, we are so cool because we just
- 1:08:03Speaker 8: did that.
- 1:08:04Speaker 6: Yeah, those little moments, it's like, these are the movies
- 1:08:08Speaker 6: Burt Reynolds made in Boogie Nights.
- 1:08:11Speaker 9: Yeah, I know.
- 1:08:14Speaker 8: I don't know. I mean, there's a level where I
- 1:08:16Speaker 8: think it does work, like you were saying. It still
- 1:08:19Speaker 8: has the really cool visuals and the campiness that sort
- 1:08:23Speaker 8: of carries it. And then there's a lot of moments of,
- 1:08:26Speaker 8: and it's mostly dialogue and just, yeah, story stuff that
- 1:08:29Speaker 8: sort of drags it down.
- 1:08:30Speaker 6: It's just the awkwardness and dead space that keeps it
- 1:08:34Speaker 6: from cohering.
- 1:08:35Speaker 8: But in a way, that's almost, it's like charm.
- 1:08:37Speaker 12: At the same time, it's like there's dead space, but
- 1:08:39Speaker 12: there were so many times I was watching that and
- 1:08:41Speaker 12: I feel like, did they cut 20 minutes out of this?
- 1:08:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:08:44Speaker 8: Kind of. Where are we now?
- 1:08:46Speaker 9: At moments, I thought, this is just like the room
- 1:08:49Speaker 9: in space.
- 1:08:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:08:52Speaker 8: It's Sinbad in space. That's what he wanted to do.
- 1:08:54Speaker 8: And it feels like that. Even aside from the weird
- 1:08:58Speaker 8: stop motion stuff, it still kind of has that same
- 1:09:01Speaker 8: spirit of the Sinbad movies, only their ship is a spaceship.
- 1:09:05Speaker 8: It still kind of feels like a Sinbad in space movie.
- 1:09:08Speaker 6: I thought you meant Sinbad the comedian.
- 1:09:11Speaker 8: That guy's hilarious. I don't want to hear anything other
- 1:09:14Speaker 8: than that.
- 1:09:16Speaker 12: Why haven't they made a Sinbad movie with Sinbad?
- 1:09:18Speaker 8: That's... They really should, actually.
- 1:09:21Speaker 13: Was it Man of the House? The one that had
- 1:09:23Speaker 13: the weird girl that was obsessed with the Smiths?
- 1:09:25Speaker 12: You're assuming we've seen any Sinbad movies.
- 1:09:28Speaker 16: I have.
- 1:09:28Speaker 9: I have seen... Fucking ruled. I've seen First Kid.
- 1:09:32Speaker 12: And There's the Door, Sir.
- 1:09:33Speaker 9: I have seen... It doesn't end there. Is he in
- 1:09:35Speaker 9: Jingle All the Way?
- 1:09:36Speaker 8: Let me tell you.
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: He is.
- 1:09:36Speaker 8: He is in Jingle All the Way.
- 1:09:37Speaker 12: Oh, crap. I have seen one.
- 1:09:39Speaker 8: That's it. We're all leaving then.
- 1:09:40Speaker 5: I'm guilty. I've never seen any of them. Call Tiffany,
- 1:09:43Speaker 5: because he's going to know everything. Yeah, Tiffany will know
- 1:09:45Speaker 5: all of them.
- 1:09:46Speaker 8: So what's your final take on this movie, Eric? The
- 1:09:51Speaker 8: lack of.
- 1:09:55Speaker 5: Fill in the lines.
- 1:09:57Speaker 9: So many things.
- 1:09:58Speaker 8: Yeah, well, Mad Libs the rest of this.
- 1:10:00Speaker 5: We've got a Mad Libs review right here.
- 1:10:02Speaker 11: The whole, he suddenly has superpowers that are completely unexplained
- 1:10:06Speaker 11: really bothered me. And they just, he kind of mentions, oh,
- 1:10:09Speaker 11: it's illegal to mess with time.
- 1:10:11Speaker 8: Like, oh, okay, that's why we're not doing it.
- 1:10:13Speaker 9: Yeah, like wagging his finger.
- 1:10:15Speaker 5: Yeah, but the emperor can do it.
- 1:10:19Speaker 8: Well, he's the emperor, right?
- 1:10:21Speaker 5: He can also fix parking tickets.
- 1:10:24Speaker 8: Mess with time.
- 1:10:25Speaker 6: And if you get a parking ticket... Well, when you've got.
- 1:10:28Speaker 8: That bling like the Emperor, those gold chains he had
- 1:10:33Speaker 8: going on, he was.
- 1:10:33Speaker 12: I've got to give it to Christopher Plummer. I mean,
- 1:10:35Speaker 12: I'd seen Rock-A-Doodle, and I didn't know that he could
- 1:10:37Speaker 12: top that, but damned if he didn't. Damned if he didn't.
- 1:10:40Speaker 13: I really like Rock-A-Doodle.
- 1:10:44Speaker 8: Marlon, there's the dole.
- 1:10:45Speaker 9: I did too. It's another childhood movie that.
- 1:10:49Speaker 16: I don't know.
- 1:10:50Speaker 12: Something about growing up as a kid, Don Bluth animation stuff,
- 1:10:55Speaker 12: it just rubbed me wrong. I mean, it just... To me, like,
- 1:11:00Speaker 12: every single Don Bluth movie felt like I was watching
- 1:11:03Speaker 12: a fever dream.
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: As a kid.
- 1:11:04Speaker 9: Like, they made me feel sick watching that. Did he
- 1:11:06Speaker 9: do All Dogs Go to Heaven?
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:11:08Speaker 9: Which I tried to rewatch, and it's, like, unwatchable.
- 1:11:10Speaker 4: Like, it really.
- 1:11:11Speaker 9: I think I was saying, like, last week how it's...
- 1:11:15Speaker 9: You don't realize when people are in a recording booth
- 1:11:18Speaker 9: for an animated movie how you can't talk like a
- 1:11:21Speaker 9: normal person. You have to be in your emotions, exaggerate everything.
- 1:11:25Speaker 9: And basically, All Dogs Go to Heaven is just Burt
- 1:11:28Speaker 9: Reynolds and Dom DeLuise just kind of bullshitting with each
- 1:11:30Speaker 9: other with no script. And they just animated over that.
- 1:11:33Speaker 9: It's so distracting.
- 1:11:34Speaker 12: Well, the funny thing is when I caught part of
- 1:11:37Speaker 12: that on something... Not too long ago. Yeah, I don't
- 1:11:42Speaker 12: know what the circumstances were, but I remember watching, like,
- 1:11:45Speaker 12: five minutes of it, like, near the beginning, and I
- 1:11:47Speaker 12: was like, you know, when I was a kid, I
- 1:11:49Speaker 12: never realized that the whole plot of this is a
- 1:11:51Speaker 12: film noir. I was like, huh. And I went back
- 1:11:53Speaker 12: to whatever I was doing. Like, I didn't keep watching
- 1:11:55Speaker 12: it after that, but I just remember being like, I
- 1:11:57Speaker 12: didn't get that when I was a kid. No, I
- 1:11:59Speaker 12: still haven't given it a chance. I just moved on.
- 1:12:02Speaker 6: You never realize that The Brave Little Toaster is a
- 1:12:05Speaker 6: Homeric epic.
- 1:12:07Speaker 5: Right. It's a work of art.
- 1:12:10Speaker 12: Speaking of nightmare fodder from childhood, Scott.
- 1:12:13Speaker 8: What if your toaster had an adventure all its own?
- 1:12:17Speaker 12: I like the fact that, you know, 20 years down
- 1:12:19Speaker 12: the road, Brave Little Toaster goes to Mars.
- 1:12:21Speaker 8: Well, sure, like you do.
- 1:12:23Speaker 12: We sent it there before we sent Curiosity.
- 1:12:26Speaker 8: Yeah, that Curiosity guy, he's not only ripping off Johnny Five,
- 1:12:30Speaker 8: but also the Brave Little Toaster.
- 1:12:31Speaker 12: Yeah, I mean, what's going to happen now is essentially
- 1:12:35Speaker 12: Mac and Me is going to come to fruition now
- 1:12:37Speaker 12: that we've set that up in there.
- 1:12:40Speaker 9: Oh, Canada and your knockoff movies. Yeah, speaking of these.
- 1:12:45Speaker 5: That Mac and Me was, it was a McDonald's creation,
- 1:12:49Speaker 5: wasn't it?
- 1:12:49Speaker 8: That's the best scene in the whole movie.
- 1:12:52Speaker 5: It was, they like funded the movie.
- 1:12:54Speaker 6: I'm not familiar with this.
- 1:12:56Speaker 5: It's a horrible.
- 1:12:58Speaker 9: Oh my God.
- 1:13:01Speaker 12: As a kid, I remember watching it and that's what
- 1:13:03Speaker 12: stood out to me. Like that was one of the
- 1:13:05Speaker 12: very first times as a kid I became aware of
- 1:13:07Speaker 12: the concept product placement because like this alien that crashes
- 1:13:12Speaker 12: to earth i'm and i can't remember much of it
- 1:13:15Speaker 12: but basically as i recall the plot he comes to
- 1:13:19Speaker 12: earth he befriends some kid it's need to rip off
- 1:13:20Speaker 12: and what saves him when he's like ill at the
- 1:13:23Speaker 12: beginning is eating mcdonald's food of course.
- 1:13:28Speaker 13: I just thought of this funny thing that happened um
- 1:13:31Speaker 13: not related to anything we're talking about other than I
- 1:13:34Speaker 13: was with a friend, and we were scrolling through Netflix.
- 1:13:36Speaker 12: Speaking of segues.
- 1:13:38Speaker 13: Trying to find a movie, and I was like, ooh,
- 1:13:41Speaker 13: Mac and Me. He's like, hell no. And then there
- 1:13:43Speaker 13: was a little animated movie right next to Mac and Me,
- 1:13:49Speaker 13: and he's like, what's that? He's like, Todd Slons, Todd Slons,
- 1:13:52Speaker 13: get the fuck away from that. Get the fuck away
- 1:13:53Speaker 13: from that.
- 1:13:53Speaker 9: Like it was a bomb.
- 1:13:57Speaker 8: Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb.
- 1:13:59Speaker 12: All that stuff, American Tail, Land Before Time, all that stuff,
- 1:14:01Speaker 12: the animation just... I don't know.
- 1:14:03Speaker 8: Not so great. Was Land Before Time?
- 1:14:06Speaker 12: Land Before Time I'm pretty sure was Don Bluth too.
- 1:14:09Speaker 8: He brought in bigger names there.
- 1:14:12Speaker 5: My daughter loves anything and everything to do with dogs
- 1:14:17Speaker 5: and animation. She draws non-stop. She watches shows and draws
- 1:14:22Speaker 5: everything that's going on. Well you know Netflix she's scrolling
- 1:14:28Speaker 5: through and All Dogs Go to Heaven it's like two
- 1:14:30Speaker 5: and then like a Christmas episode and then one and
- 1:14:34Speaker 5: I said, what do you think about this one, the
- 1:14:36Speaker 5: original All Dogs? She goes, that's the worst movie I've
- 1:14:39Speaker 5: ever seen. And I said, really? She goes, yeah, it's bad.
- 1:14:42Speaker 9: And I was like.
- 1:14:44Speaker 5: I'm very proud of you for knowing the difference between.
- 1:14:47Speaker 12: Good and bad.
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: Good and evil. Right.
- 1:14:52Speaker 9: It's not just bad.
- 1:14:53Speaker 8: That's the true message of All Dogs.
- 1:14:55Speaker 5: That's the same moment my nephew, when his mom had taken,
- 1:14:58Speaker 5: because he was one of those kids that really never
- 1:15:00Speaker 5: had an opinion, and.
- 1:15:02Speaker 4: Loved movies.
- 1:15:03Speaker 5: And his mom brought him back from seeing Flubber. And
- 1:15:07Speaker 5: I said, what did you think of it? He goes,
- 1:15:08Speaker 5: it was stupid. I was like, you've now transcended and
- 1:15:13Speaker 5: you realize.
- 1:15:14Speaker 8: You've just taken your first step into a larger world.
- 1:15:19Speaker 5: Yes, it was.
- 1:15:19Speaker 12: We could almost make an episode.
- 1:15:20Speaker 9: We need these bad movies.
- 1:15:22Speaker 12: Yeah, make an episode almost about the very first time
- 1:15:24Speaker 12: we became aware of movies just being shit.
- 1:15:28Speaker 16: Yeah, right?
- 1:15:28Speaker 9: They were all awesome.
- 1:15:30Speaker 8: Add that to the list. Hold on.
- 1:15:31Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:15:32Speaker 12: Just like the first time there as a kid you
- 1:15:34Speaker 12: were sitting there and you were just like, what am
- 1:15:37Speaker 12: I watching? And to think, you know, you become cognizant
- 1:15:42Speaker 12: of that at like an early age and then at
- 1:15:44Speaker 12: the same time you do the same thing you do
- 1:15:46Speaker 12: as an adult. It's like, well, I haven't made the
- 1:15:50Speaker 12: commitment to sit here and watch this. I'm going to
- 1:15:51Speaker 12: see it through to the end. It's a very adult
- 1:15:54Speaker 12: moment in a child's life, you know, to basically learning
- 1:15:58Speaker 12: to cope with disappointed expectations.
- 1:16:01Speaker 6: Yeah, I think I've already covered mine.
- 1:16:06Speaker 8: We'll save all of that for another episode. So I
- 1:16:09Speaker 8: think we've covered Star Crash. We've veered off as we
- 1:16:13Speaker 8: usually do by the end of this, so I think
- 1:16:15Speaker 8: we better wrap it up and get the hell out
- 1:16:16Speaker 8: of here.
- 1:16:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:16:17Speaker 8: So with that, I'm not going to give you the
- 1:16:20Speaker 8: official Secret Circle reveal yet, mostly because these bastards won't
- 1:16:24Speaker 8: come up with a decent fanfare to save their life.
- 1:16:26Speaker 8: But I'll give you sort of a... It doesn't matter now.
- 1:16:29Speaker 8: It doesn't matter now. You missed your chance last week.
- 1:16:35Speaker 8: And the crowd goes wild.
- 1:16:36Speaker 6: Come on in my kitchen.
- 1:16:39Speaker 9: You don't even know what the fuck that is.
- 1:16:41Speaker 8: Robert Johnson.
- 1:16:43Speaker 12: Cobbler, cobbler, cobbler.
- 1:16:45Speaker 8: He has no fanfare. That's selling him short. So, okay, well,
- 1:16:50Speaker 8: just to kind of give you a heads up, a
- 1:16:53Speaker 8: potential amazing episode is coming your way. We're going to
- 1:16:58Speaker 8: return to our Tales from the Cryptids series. We haven't
- 1:17:02Speaker 8: done a Bigfoot episode in a long, long time, so
- 1:17:06Speaker 8: we're going to try to put together a very special
- 1:17:09Speaker 8: Bigfoot episode. We're roping in a few extra people, some
- 1:17:14Speaker 8: we've had on the show.
- 1:17:15Speaker 12: Because Harry Henderson is such a step above Mac and me.
- 1:17:19Speaker 8: I'm not sure we're going with that one to lead off. Eventually,
- 1:17:22Speaker 8: I hope that we'll get to all Bigfoot movies. I
- 1:17:25Speaker 8: don't like Harry Henderson.
- 1:17:26Speaker 12: Ben Kingsley's finest moment.
- 1:17:30Speaker 8: I think we'll try to find something even more ridiculous. So, yeah,
- 1:17:34Speaker 8: we're going to come back with, not next time, but
- 1:17:37Speaker 8: probably the following. We will come back with some sort
- 1:17:40Speaker 8: of Bigfoot episode that I'm not sure any of us
- 1:17:42Speaker 8: are prepared for. Well, then, otherwise, that about does it.
- 1:17:46Speaker 8: We will return next week. Same geek time, same geek feed.
- 1:17:48Speaker 8: Thanks for listening.
- 1:18:09Speaker 19: Dressed up for a big day.
