- 0:30That's five three five four three four three. Andrew, how are you doing
- 0:34this morning? I'm staying warm. We haven't had to talk about that yet,
- 0:39and all of a sudden it got cold and I'm like, I'm not
- 0:44ready for this. It's not a good feeling, is it. It's it's
- 0:47no good at all, real quick before we're going to talk about doctor Energy
- 0:52Saver and the great things you guys can do at Larst Home Services. Does
- 0:55your does gregor or your mom ever call you Andy? Does anyone ever call
- 0:58you Andy? Because you don't look like an Andy at all? Like it
- 1:00seems like Andrew my whole life, Are you serious? Growing up? That's
- 1:06all my friends know me really And yeah, and it goes way back in
- 1:10my career working for Linda's Construction and where I got my start and their son
- 1:15now CEO, one of the owners of their great company. His name is
- 1:19Andy Lindis, and I got sick of people yelling Andy and being like what
- 1:26I just like at that point, it's like, all right, it's Andrew,
- 1:30and I won't respond to Andy. So that's interesting. You look but
- 1:34you like you don't. I'll be honest. You don't look like you look
- 1:37like an Andrew. And maybe it's just because that's how I've always known you,
- 1:40but like, like, I just I'm like, I don't know why
- 1:42it even popped in my head this morning. I'm like, he doesn't even
- 1:45look like like I like that, And it's always great chatting with you.
- 1:52As of course. Andrew comes to us from Larsenal Home Services the West site
- 1:55Larsen Home Services dot com, l A R s O N Home Services dot
- 1:59Com. I call much you like, but it's an important time of year
- 2:01to call Andrew and the team in Larsnome Services because of that weather. And
- 2:06I feel like one of the slogans that any that you guys need to implement
- 2:09at Larstome Services and any homeowner could appreciate as something like we make addicts beautiful
- 2:15because you guys do amazing work. Let's talk about doctor Energy Saver, about
- 2:22the process but also we talk about the before and after of an attict.
- 2:27People say, what does it matter? It makes a huge difference. Let's
- 2:30talk about doctor Energy Saver Andrew. It makes a huge difference. And the
- 2:32one thing I wanted to talk about today, one thing that can sum help
- 2:38some up everything that we do to help someone's home in the winter months is
- 2:43stack effect. And if you're you know, if you're listening, look it
- 2:46up, Google it, you know, see what it's all about. I
- 2:49mean, basic principles of pretty much everybody knows. Hot air rises. You
- 2:53can see that from a hot air balloon. You blow hot air into it,
- 2:55and a balloon rises and it takes people up in it. Now,
- 3:00your home is screwed down to the ground while it's cemented, nailed, screwed,
- 3:05bolted down to the ground, thankfully, so when you heat it up,
- 3:08it doesn't float away. But one of the main reasons as well is
- 3:12because most people's homes are leaky. And what we know it through home science
- 3:16is that probably, I would say probably starting twenty years ago, even earlier
- 3:23anything before that, homes weren't air sealed like they are now. They didn't
- 3:28air seal penetrations. You know, basically all your all of your electrical wiring
- 3:35that goes through your house. All those wires come through the attic and they
- 3:39drop for the most part, but most of the time a lot of them
- 3:44come through attics. They drop down the wall and it's a clear cut hole
- 3:50that goes straight up, straight up to the ceiling, straight up through your
- 3:53top plates. We lose tons of heat through through can lights. Can lights
- 3:58are super popular, but I mean, honestly, it's like a gallon ice
- 4:02cream pail hole cut in your ceiling. And they're typically not air sealed.
- 4:06They're typically not insulated very well. We've seen them where there's no insulation around
- 4:10them whatsoever. Even though most of them are rated to have the insulation around
- 4:15them, they're not going to get that hot anymore because we use typically LEDs.
- 4:19But they're giant holes, and when you add up all the holes in
- 4:25a home, it creates one massive hole. And you know, I was
- 4:30learning home science quite a few years ago, and I went to a training
- 4:38where we did something called a blower door test, and it's a big fan
- 4:42that you hook up to your door, and it basically it exacerbates the leakiness
- 4:46of your home. So it pulls air through your home, and the more
- 4:49resistance obviously, the less leaky your homes. So what was kind of neat
- 4:56is we took some readings on a home. We found out what their levels
- 5:00were, and then we went in and we did all of our air ceiling
- 5:04and reinsulating, and then we turned that blower fan back on, and the
- 5:10new readings were they were off the charts. It was like forty percent different.
- 5:14So then we wanted to do a test. What is it going to
- 5:15take to get this home back to where it was now? Mind you,
- 5:18all we did was air seal the attic and add insulation. We had to
- 5:24open two windows in their home completely open to get their home back to as
- 5:30leaky as it was before. Now, nobody would ever leave two windows completely
- 5:35open all winter long, correct, correct soon unless you unless your blood runs
- 5:42really warm, nobody would ever do that. But that showed exactly how all
- 5:47of those holes in the attic ceiling added up to being having two windows open
- 5:54all the time, three hundred and sixty five days a year. That's insane,
- 5:58right, and never do That's just how it was, and that's unseen
- 6:01to people. And so that's kind of where I was visually to visualize that.
- 6:06It makes a lot of sense. You take all of those electrical holes,
- 6:11all the plumbing holes, all of your can lights, it's it creates
- 6:15one massive hole. And for this home that we worked on, and honestly,
- 6:18that home really wasn't even bad. The readings weren't terrible, but we
- 6:21had to open two windows completely to get it back to as leaky as it
- 6:26was before. So when we come into a home, and that's that's what
- 6:30we're looking for. We're getting up in the attic. You know, we're
- 6:32finding all the penetrations and we want to take that attic down to bare bones.
- 6:39We want to get in there with a clean slate. We want to
- 6:41air seal up all of those holes so you don't have two windows open all
- 6:46winter long. And then, like you say, make that attic beautiful by
- 6:50putting seventeen inches of beautiful cellulose insulation over the top of it. And now
- 6:58our air leaks are gone, and our home has a beautiful blanket in the
- 7:01attic. And I guess that's how I imagine it, putting a blanket in
- 7:03there. So did I explain it? While I think you did? It
- 7:06did a great job. And the illustration of and pointing out, you know,
- 7:11real world examples of kind of people sometimes wonder about, well, what's
- 7:15the equivalent? Okay, so if there is cold are getting in getting into
- 7:18my house? What is you know, what does that look like? When
- 7:21you illustrate, you're literally it's like having two windows open. I think we
- 7:26can all really quickly visualize that's not good. And of course Andrew can help
- 7:30you deal with that issue and get rid of that problem. Reduce the wear
- 7:32and tear on your furnace, make your house overall completely more comfortable. You
- 7:36won't have cold spots. Hotspots will be consistently comfortable again, wear and tear
- 7:41on the furnace, comfortable home, save money, save significant money on your
- 7:46energy bills. It's a phenomenal thing they can do with doctor Energy Saver at
- 7:48Larsen Home Services. Today is a day to pick up phone, give them
- 7:51a call six oh eight five three five forty three forty three. That's five
- 7:55three, five four three four to three for Larsen Home Services. And Andrew,
- 7:59were that term that I learned from you and uh kind of look in
- 8:01the other direction of your home. It's the word rim joice and I had
- 8:05never thought of a rim joye before and then you had said something to me.
- 8:09And now if I'm ever at like a buddy's house, helping them move
- 8:13things out of the basement, I'm looking at something that I noticed. And
- 8:18this is why I carry around your information. Is a lot of them have
- 8:22what looks like moldy moldy insulation wedged in that little crack there. What is
- 8:28the rim joye and why is it important when it comes to stealing up your
- 8:31home? Yes, thank you, I'm glad that you go around looking at
- 8:35rim choices. Now like I driver, I look at rim joy's drive around,
- 8:41I look at brooks, I look at like this is it's it's a
- 8:43sickness and I've got infected with it's clearly contagious. Yeah. Rim joice is
- 8:48basically a technical term for the area created where we set our floor choice on
- 8:54top of our block foundation. Everybody has it. We we create a foundation,
- 8:58either on a block or out of poured concrete, and then we put
- 9:01floor joys on top of it. Those floor joys are basically carry the load,
- 9:07carry the weight of the entire home on them. What creates little crevices
- 9:11above the blocks and my whole life and really all I had ever seen.
- 9:16Was some people stuff that pink insulation in there. Why, well, they
- 9:20thought that it helped because it's a very leaky spot in the home, and
- 9:24as warm air leaves our house through all of the holes in the attic the
- 9:31home, it's it's not a vacuum, right, it has to take air
- 9:35in. So it's typically pulling air from the lowest spot, the leakiest spot
- 9:39of the home, and that tends to be the rim Joye area. It's
- 9:43literally there's typically there's no insulation there. There's not a wall there, you
- 9:48know. And the rest of our home we've got walls sitting on top of
- 9:52a floor. They're studded, they're insulated, they're bapor barrier, their sheet
- 9:54rock, they're all of this stuff. That area is kind of a forgotten
- 10:00area. That's why we spray foam that area a lot, because that's the
- 10:05area that tends to suck in during the winter. As the warm air rises
- 10:09and leaves the home, it sucks in the cold air from down below,
- 10:13the cold, dry air, which is a really big deal. In my
- 10:16family, I have two daughters that for some reason are very prone to nose
- 10:22bleeds. Oh no, it's like I have a seven year old. If
- 10:24she gets a nose bleed, it's like I don't know, going to the
- 10:30sink and getting a drink of water, like your nose is just running,
- 10:33and he's like, oh, I got a nose bleed, I better go
- 10:33plug it. She's seven, so she's used to it. So the dry
- 10:37air makes it way worse. So we keep the cold, dry air out
- 10:43by sealing up those rim joises. And when you seal up the top and
- 10:48you seal up the area where it brings the cold air in, the cold
- 10:52dry air. And obviously you can't seal it up one hundred percent, nor
- 10:56do you want to. Your home has to breathe. But slowing it down,
- 11:00slowing those air exchanges down is what makes our home more comfortable, makes
- 11:03our home less drafty, and ultimately saves us money on heating and cooling bills
- 11:09all year long. So that is what we do. That is something that
- 11:13we absolutely specialize in. And I want to throw this out on the show.
- 11:16For the new year, we're running a special. You know, hey,
- 11:20twenty twenty four is right around the corner, So we're offering twenty four
- 11:22percent off insallation labor and in our area in our zone of the world,
- 11:28the Energy Council says that your home should be at an R forty seven.
- 11:31In the attic. We typically never go to an R forty seven. We
- 11:35always go to an R sixty because it's only like three more inches and it
- 11:41makes it can make a world of difference. So twenty four percent off insulation
- 11:43labor and a free upgrade to our sixty insulation when we do when we do
- 11:48a remove an air seal. So it's a really good deal and it's gonna
- 11:52make your home more comfortable and it's going to save you money in the long
- 11:56run. That is amazing. Today is definitely the day to call Larsen Home

- 12:24As we know, it's going to get much much colder and for much much
- 12:26longer, so it's kind of a teaser. Honestly. It got cold and
- 12:31windy and it was like this is nasty, and you know now it's going
- 12:33to be back up in the forties today, which is nice. But it
- 12:35was kind of like, Okay, this is what's coming. And honestly,
- 12:39it wasn't even that cold. I mean, in January, if it's twenty
- 12:41four degrees, we're gonna be like, hey, this is pretty nice.
