• 0:31
Speaker 1: Is it coming your way on that, mr Mars, as this week's events calendar is just ahead?
• 0:36
Speaker 1: On the In Wheel Time car talk show, along with Mike out of this world, mars, we always need more.
• 0:42
Speaker 1: Jeff Seekin, I'm Don Armstrong.
• 0:44
Speaker 1: Thanks so much for joining us today.
• 0:45
Speaker 1: I was telling everybody just before the show started this morning that we were at the Hemi hideout, so what that means is that we pick up all of this and we haul it in the In Wheel Time car hauler Well, actually, the donkey hauler, the donkey hauler.
• 1:00
Speaker 1: And then we have to bring it all back and then we have to set it up.
• 1:03
Speaker 1: So the setup occurred beginning two hours ago and we're still working on making sure that everything works.
• 1:10
Speaker 1: It's down to work, because it's always a tap dance around here when it comes to tearing things down and reinstalling it, and we all have two left feet.
• 1:18
Speaker 1: So is Chris ready?
• 1:21
Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so.
• 1:23
  Speaker 3: I think we're golden Mars.
• 1:24
Speaker 3: Are you with us?
• 1:24
Speaker 3: He is, he's still double checking.
• 1:26
  Speaker 1: No, he's not.
• 1:26
Speaker 3: Chris is in the queue.
• 1:28
Speaker 1: Oh, he is in the queue, all right.
• 1:29
Speaker 1: So yes, mr Mars, you're so sewing it over there, but you're not on, mike, no, you.
• 1:36
  Speaker 1: But.
• 1:39
  Speaker 4: I'm going home.
• 1:40
Speaker 4: No, it seems that the YouTube and Facebook has an audio issue.
• 1:46
Speaker 4: Our website in wheel timecom that we live stream to is fine, my heart's fine, the rest of the world's fine, except for YouTube and Facebook, and we're working on that.
• 1:56
Speaker 4: Okay, well, you just continue to work on that.
• 1:58
Speaker 4: We need to bring Chris in.
• 1:59
Speaker 4: I'm going, I'm going back, quiet, chris.
• 2:01
Speaker 1: Chris is here, all right.
• 2:02
Speaker 1: Well, let's just talk to Chris.
• 2:03
Speaker 1: Chris, good morning to you, chris P.
• 2:05
Speaker 1: She's the CEO and founder of Smarter AI.
• 2:08
Speaker 1: We're going to talk today about autonomous vehicles and, chris, before I get to you, you are there with us, are you not?
• 2:16
  Speaker 5: Good morning guys.
• 2:17
Speaker 5: Thanks for having me.
• 2:18
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it's good to have you with us.
• 2:19
  Speaker 1: Thanks so much.
• 2:20
Speaker 1: I'm going to read this story first.
• 2:22
Speaker 1: This is a story you probably have already heard about.
• 2:25
Speaker 1: Only about 14% of companies specializing in autonomous driving, connectivity, electrification and shared mobility appear to be meaningfully using applied artificial intelligence.
• 2:37
Speaker 1: According to McKinsey report.
• 2:39
Speaker 1: You heard about this?
• 2:39
Speaker 1: Yes, I heard about that, guys.
• 2:42
Speaker 1: Okay, roughly 470 of the 3,500 companies McKinsey examined are working on products related to applied AI or enabled by them.
• 2:55
Speaker 1: We have the tree guy.
• 2:57
Speaker 1: Give you something else to do, mike.
• 2:59
  Speaker 1: Thank you.
• 3:00
Speaker 1: You asked the dog to shut the door, please.
• 3:04
Speaker 1: Applied AI uses data to learn patterns and make predictions that can be used to solve real world problems, in contrast to generative AI, which creates new content.
• 3:16
Speaker 1: For example, with applied AI, developers may use algorithms to find weaknesses in virtual worlds utilized for autonomous vehicle training.
• 3:25
Speaker 1: I'll get you to comment on that, chris, so you can give us an explanation of how that all works.
• 3:29
Speaker 1: Companies that are using applied AI at the center of their businesses are employing it in engineering and research and development, and additionally, they're using it in manufacturing, marketing and sales and aftermarket services, such as infotainment preferences.
• 3:43
Speaker 1: Companies are also using applied AI to examine environmental, social and governance risks in potential suppliers.
• 3:51
Speaker 1: Can you drill that down for us that aren't used to all of that wordage?
• 3:56
Speaker 3: I hope you can.
• 3:57
  Speaker 1: Exactly.
• 3:58
  Speaker 5: Sure.
• 3:59
Speaker 5: So the most common form of AI is machine learning.
• 4:07
Speaker 5: This is the kind of AI which is used in autonomous transportation, self-driving cars.
• 4:13
Speaker 5: Essentially, the way it works is it's a set of algorithms for examining data and then, based on that data set, being able to make predictions when the system encounters new data.
• 4:31
Speaker 1: For instance, we're driving down the road and there is a person crossing the road a human being crossing the road.
• 4:39
Speaker 1: This system has to understand that that's a person crossing the road into slowdown.
• 4:46
Speaker 1: Is that what you're saying?
• 4:47
Speaker 5: It has to understand it's.
• 4:48
Speaker 5: A person has to be able to estimate the distance, has to be able to estimate what we call time to collision and, perhaps based on the direction and speed of the person, make a decision to either stop or slow down or change course or some combination of those three things.
• 5:10
Speaker 1: It has to apply the brakes clearly or turn the steering wheel.
• 5:15
Speaker 5: Steering wheel brakes, maybe both yes.
• 5:17
Speaker 3: It's just an object, not necessarily a person, but just an object.
• 5:21
Speaker 1: Well, I used that person as an example.
• 5:22
Speaker 1: It could be anything.
• 5:22
Speaker 1: Yeah, so it has to take all of that.
• 5:26
Speaker 1: Then you have to say okay, I want you to see all of this, we're going to take that information and we're going to apply it to the car.
• 5:33
Speaker 1: So all of that really has to be written by either a human being or through artificial intelligence itself.
• 5:40
Speaker 1: Which one is it?
• 5:43
Speaker 5: So in the early days of autonomous transportation, all of those algorithms were written by people Yep.
• 5:49
Speaker 5: Today, the way Tesla's system works and the way most of the system's work is, they use machine learning.
• 5:58
Speaker 5: So what machine learning is is people writing algorithms to study what we call training data.
• 6:05
Speaker 5: So imagine thousands, hundreds of thousands, millions of images taken from vehicle cameras of people in crosswalks, and these algorithms study those images and, based on the patterns in those images, they learn to recognize people when they encounter new images.
• 6:31
  Speaker 1: Interesting.
• 6:31
  Speaker 1: Do they do?
• 6:32
Speaker 1: They, does it people?
• 6:34
Speaker 1: Or is it just a moving object that it, that it looks at?
• 6:39
  Speaker 5: For both.
• 6:39
Speaker 5: So so machine learning can be trained to identify any kind of object in the context of transportation.
• 6:49
Speaker 5: You know the most, most common is other cars.
• 6:52
Speaker 5: But machine learning systems can also be trained to read traffic signs, traffic lights, you know, to identify people, bicycles, potholes.
• 7:04
Speaker 5: You know any kind of obstruction or scenario that you might find on the street.
• 7:11
Speaker 1: So like, for instance, a big boulder comes off the back of a dump truck and falls in the path of you.
• 7:18
Speaker 1: He doesn't know, but he's still in the picture.
• 7:21
Speaker 1: The dump truck is moving away from you and now the boulder is down in front of where you're going to go.
• 7:28
Speaker 5: Yeah, so the machine learning system should identify.
• 7:32
Speaker 3: I don't know if it'll know that that's a boulder, but it should identify some sort of obstruction or object the vehicles have the capability of looking down over the vehicle when they park and you have all the sensors and the cameras around it plus the one down looking at the top of the vehicle.
• 7:50
Speaker 3: Is that part of that program as well?
• 7:52
Speaker 3: Can you look vertically, I guess, instead of horizontally?
• 7:56
Speaker 3: Can you look down on things Like coming up to an intersection?
• 7:59
Speaker 3: Does it look down on it for potential?
• 8:02
Speaker 5: Yeah, so the machine learning algorithms can be trained to use any number of inputs, and the number of inputs in the context of a car, now, that's up to the vehicle manufacturer.
• 8:17
  Speaker 5: Typically, you'll find, I think, between 10 and 20 cameras installed in a self-driving vehicle.
• 8:25
Speaker 5: So there'll be cameras lower down, higher up, left, right, that sort of thing, but the idea is, in totality, to give the machine learning a 360 degree picture of what's happening around the vehicle.
• 8:40
Speaker 1: So, chris, I kind of led into this because I want to talk to you specifically about this California State Assembly passing this, a bill that would prohibit autonomous trucks from operating on the state's roads without a human driver present, and that kind of goes against what we are hearing here in the state of Texas that it's becoming more commonplace.
• 9:05
Speaker 1: We don't recognize, I don't recognize an autonomous 18-wheeler going down the freeway, but I understand that there are certain routes that these autonomous vehicles are moving down the freeway, say, and so why is it that California has passed this bill that says nay-nay, without a driver?
• 9:28
  Speaker 5: That's a good question.
• 9:29
Speaker 5: You know all the data.
• 9:33
Speaker 5: If you compare the safety of an autonomous vehicle with the safety of a human-driven vehicle, all the data supports overwhelmingly that, even in their current state, autonomous vehicles are much less likely to be involved in collisions than human-driven vehicles.
• 9:55
Speaker 5: And autonomous vehicles are even more or less likely to be involved in a fatal collision than a vehicle driven by a human.
• 10:09
Speaker 1: So what's happened here, I think, is the fact that this cruise vehicle that apparently drug a human being down the street a few hundred feet, or however it was out there in California, has really wreaked havoc on it because, let's face it, I mean cruise, the General Motors-backed autonomous vehicle service, is pretty much out of business today anyway.
• 10:37
Speaker 5: Yeah, so I think it's really more of, as you pointed out, it's more of a sociology issue than a technology issue.
• 10:44
Speaker 5: The best data that we know of suggests that autonomous vehicles are approximately 10 times more safe than human-driven vehicles, where the definition of safe is the likelihood of being involved in a collision.
• 11:04
Speaker 5: So, on that basis, you would think we'd want to be encouraging more, not less, of these vehicles on the road.
• 11:13
Speaker 3: Well, doesn't that Take a little bit?
• 11:14
  Speaker 3: Sorry, go ahead.
• 11:15
Speaker 3: I was going to say doesn't it average out?
• 11:17
Speaker 3: There's more vehicles that are not autonomous on the road than the autonomous vehicles, so the percentages would weigh in their favor, to begin with, because they have a smaller percentage of vehicles on the road.
• 11:30
Speaker 5: So I didn't mean in terms of the total number of collisions, but a human-driven vehicle is involved in about one collision every 500,000 miles.
• 11:40
Speaker 5: A human sorry, an autonomous vehicle is in one collision approximately every five or six million miles.
• 11:50
Speaker 5: So on a per mile basis they're approximately 10 times more safe.
• 11:57
  Speaker 5: Okay.
• 11:58
Speaker 1: All right, so Okay, now let's get into what smarter AI does.
• 12:06
Speaker 5: Okay, we make computer vision systems and AI cameras for vehicles for the transportation industry and we're involved in both OEM systems and aftermarket systems.
• 12:21
Speaker 5: So in other words, OEM system, we're involved working with vehicle manufacturers on camera systems and AI or computer vision systems for driving those vehicles and we're also involved in dash cams and other kinds of aftermarket cameras that can be installed in legacy vehicles.
• 12:46
Speaker 1: And I wanna put it into perspective, because you really run the gamut of who you are involved with.
• 12:53
Speaker 1: I noticed that you've created services tier for AT&T TV, bbm video, poly video, stunt turn ice also been awarded Best of Internet World, canada's top young leader and top 40 under 40.
• 13:11
Speaker 1: That's all you, buddy.
• 13:17
  Speaker 5: You're.
• 13:17
Speaker 5: I don't know if I should say you're bringing back some good memories or making me feel old.
• 13:22
Speaker 5: Where are you located?
• 13:24
Speaker 5: Are you in Canada?
• 13:26
Speaker 5: Well, I'm originally from Canada.
• 13:29
Speaker 5: Right now, I'm dialing in from Dubai.
• 13:31
Speaker 5: So Smarter AI has four or five offices in different parts of the world.
• 13:37
Speaker 5: Our headquarters is not too far from you, gentlemen.
• 13:39
Speaker 5: It's in Las Vegas, nevada, but today I'm in our Dubai office.
• 13:45
Speaker 3: So did you happen to do anything for the Formula One race that was last week?
• 13:50
Speaker 5: Yes, I happened to call my friends that don't run AI companies and I'm trying to get those things.
• 13:56
Speaker 5: They held up their speaker phone in the paddock and I got to hear some of the sounds.
• 14:02
Speaker 1: Very good, very good, All right.
• 14:04
Speaker 1: So let's talk for a minute here while we can and we have the time and we have the AI connection.
• 14:11
Speaker 1: If you're lack of a better term this morning, what?
• 14:17
Speaker 1: Where are we today in AI, here in the United States and globally?
• 14:22
Speaker 1: Is the United States behind all of what's going on, or are we kind of keeping up with the rest of the world?
• 14:31
Speaker 5: No, the United States is leading the world, both in general terms in AI and also as it relates to transportation.
• 14:41
Speaker 5: So, starting from the chips, the majority of the chips that are used in AI-enabled devices are designed in the United States by companies like NVIDIA.
• 14:55
Speaker 5: Most of the software that's used for training the AI models is developed in the United States of America.
• 15:04
Speaker 5: And if we think about the transportation companies that are at the forefront in terms of deploying these technologies so Tesla, cruz, waymo, these sorts of companies these are all American companies.
• 15:19
Speaker 1: And where does smarter AI hang with all of these other companies?
• 15:26
  Speaker 5: So smarter.
• 15:27
Speaker 5: Ai is an enablement software platform, so our software platform enables AI cameras, yep, and, as I mentioned earlier, our software platform sits inside both OEM camera systems, so the kinds of camera systems that are designed and built into vehicles in the factory, and our software platform is also available through aftermarket devices, the kinds of dash cams that either consumers or fleet operators would install into their cars and trucks.
• 16:06
  Speaker 1: Are you?
• 16:06
Speaker 1: Are your phones ringing off the hook over there we're busy.
• 16:10
Speaker 1: Yes, To say the least, because I mean with now connected with the auto manufacturer, is I'm going this guy?
• 16:19
Speaker 1: I mean, you're at the cutting edge of what everybody seems to want these days.
• 16:24
Speaker 1: Yeah, and in fact it's interesting that you mentioned about long haul trucks on the roads in Texas.
• 16:32
Speaker 5: One of the partners that we're working with is the one of the partners that we're working with is involved in.
• 16:40
Speaker 5: The one of our partners is one of the leading manufacturers of long haul trucks in the world.
• 16:48
Speaker 1: Well, I mean, that speaks volumes, and I assume that the success is overwhelmingly good.
• 16:56
Speaker 5: So far, so good.
• 16:57
Speaker 5: We're in about, we're in about the third inning.
• 17:00
Speaker 5: We're probably in the third or fourth inning but so far, so good.
• 17:02
Speaker 1: I got you, and by that you mean years.
• 17:05
Speaker 1: I mean how many years have you been involved in this with these particular sources here, like in the state of Texas?
• 17:14
Speaker 5: So I founded Smarter AI five years ago.
• 17:17
Speaker 5: We started making vehicle cameras about two and a half years ago and we've been working in both the fleet and the trucking businesses for about the last two years.
• 17:31
Speaker 1: Can I buy Smarter AI cameras and systems and retrofit it to my car?
• 17:37
  Speaker 5: Absolutely.
• 17:38
Speaker 5: We've got aftermarket dash cams that come in all shapes and sizes so you can buy one for your car, your medium sized or your heavy commercial vehicle.
• 17:52
Speaker 1: So the question there is is it called Smarter AI vision?
• 17:57
Speaker 1: Is that what it is?
• 17:59
Speaker 5: Companies called Smarter AI.
• 18:01
Speaker 5: The website is SmarterAIcamera.
• 18:03
  Speaker 5: I love it.
• 18:04
Speaker 3: So you're in Dubai.
• 18:05
Speaker 3: So that means there's more activity in Dubai or different parts of the world, in the United States, or are you just there for AI business?
• 18:13
Speaker 5: Yeah, we just have an office here that supports what we call the EMEA region, so Europe, middle East and Africa.
• 18:21
Speaker 5: We've got customers in all three of those places, and Dubai is sort of centrally located among the three, so it works in terms of being in the same time zone for support and also being able to make on-site visits.
• 18:40
Speaker 1: Well, Chris, anytime that you want to spend an entire morning here on the In-Wheel Time Car Talk Show, you just give us a shout and we'll have you on.
• 18:49
Speaker 1: We'll set aside three hours for it, Because I mean I could talk to you for the entire morning.
• 18:56
Speaker 5: I'd love to do that, but I'm waiting for a studio invite.
• 19:01
Speaker 4: What time is it where you're at?
• 19:04
Speaker 5: It's about 6 pm, shortly after 6 pm.
• 19:06
Speaker 1: All right, go get some dinner.
• 19:07
Speaker 1: It's a pleasure talking to you, chris, and you stay in touch with us here.

• 24:56
Speaker 1: I had the 2.5 turbo premium plus.
• 24:59
Speaker 1: Well, the deal is is, with these things, they package what would be Options together and so they just name these option packages something and it's way too confusing and it's way too many of.

Speaker 1: And because now you've got to fiddle with the knob, look at the screen.
• 26:34
Speaker 1: Well, why don't I look at the screen and touch the screen Just seems a whole lot easier and safer than having to mess with the knob.
• 26:41
Speaker 1: Gotcha, that's why I call it the death knob.
• 26:43
