- 0:28Hey, everybody. Good morning from the chicken
- 0:30coop. So today we're going to do a
- 0:32little bit of a different exercise and this is going to be
- 0:35a bit of a stretch for the things that we normally do on
- 0:39here. But I think it's important to
- 0:41recognize in your life sometimes you have to think about the dark
- 0:45side of things in order to be, you know, more productive, more
- 0:49on point with the light side of things.
- 0:51So today we're going to talk about the eulogy, and the eulogy
- 0:54is an exercise. Admittedly, the first time I
- 0:57heard this, I hated it. And there are some of you on
- 0:59here that may feel the same way and resist it.
- 1:02And it took me a long time to say, OK, this is a good
- 1:06exercise. But basically what it is comes
- 1:08down to the fact that think about a eulogy, it's for someone
- 1:13that's passed away. You're going to go and you're
- 1:14going to listen to people talk about this person and what they
- 1:17have to say about this person and they're passing.
- 1:22My father was always very funny about this because he would say,
- 1:25well you know you go and you listen and they're only going to
- 1:27say good things because they feel bad.
- 1:29They can't say the bad things. They can't tell you the truth
- 1:31about the person. Always made me laugh every time
- 1:34he said it because he's probably wasn't wrong about that.
- 1:36We always choose to pick up all the good stuff.
- 1:39But over Christmas, I was watching, you know, the my, all
- 1:44my favorite Christmas movies. And Love Actually is a big, I'm
- 1:48a big fan of Love, actually. And he has her.
- 1:52There's a scene in the movie where one of the characters
- 1:54wives die and there's a eulogy and a funeral going on and how
- 1:58he was, you know, going through it.
- 2:00And he was saying he was doing it the way she wanted because
- 2:04she planned it. And it got me thinking, you
- 2:06know, at some point I'm going to talk to everybody about doing
- 2:09this exercise where you write your own eulogy, which is so
- 2:12wonderful when you think about it, because right now,
- 2:15obviously, that's not happening. But you start thinking about,
- 2:18well, what do I want people to say about me?
- 2:20And from the perspective of like what my father said, do you want
- 2:25them to say just the things that are like the positives, but they
- 2:30really don't believe them or do you really want them to believe
- 2:33what they're saying? Do you want them to really like
- 2:37as one of my clients once said to me, I really want to make
- 2:40them cry that I'm gone. I want them to really miss me
- 2:43because I did such a good job being me.
- 2:45And I thought that that's such an interesting take on it.
- 2:48You know, she, she wants them to really miss her because she did
- 2:52such a great job being herself. And I thought that's exactly
- 2:55what my father did. He such a did such a great job
- 2:58being himself that missing him everyday even all these years
- 3:02later. Hell yes yes 100% that is that
- 3:06is 1000% true. And doing the exercise is not
- 3:11easy my friend. So as you get ready to do it you
- 3:14have to sit down. You have to say OK well if I was
- 3:16to write my own eulogy what would I want to say?
- 3:18How would it sound? What would I want that to look
- 3:21like? How would I want people to think
- 3:23of me? And you just start sketching it
- 3:25out for yourself. And it's not just about your
- 3:29accomplishments. It's not just about, oh, they
- 3:32were members of this and this and this.
- 3:35I had this when we used to get the newspaper when I was a kid.
- 3:38And every single time the paper would come, I would always read
- 3:41the obituaries. And my mother would say to me,
- 3:44why do you read the obituaries? And I'm like, well, I'm just
- 3:46curious who these people were. And I could never understand it.
- 3:50And then once I got past the fact that I didn't want to write
- 3:53my own eulogy, when this exercise was given to me many
- 3:55years ago, I actually said, you know, this could be useful.
- 3:58And I was wondering who these people were.
- 4:00I was curious. But in those obituaries, they
- 4:04always gave such facts about what the person accomplished on
- 4:08paper, but not so much about the character.
- 4:11So the eulogy is where the character comes in, where you're
- 4:14talking about who do you want to be?
- 4:16How do you want to be remembered in that?
- 4:20Do you want to be remembered for just an accomplishment?
- 4:22Like, you know, you were in the Navy for so many years and you
- 4:25had this, this many awards? Or do you want to be remembered
- 4:28for the acts and the moments and the person that says, well, they
- 4:33always had time, they always stopped by, they always sat,
- 4:36they always gave me their attention.
- 4:38How do you want to be remembered?
- 4:40And that's the trick to this. So grab a piece of paper when
- 4:44you have a chance, sit down and start the exercise.
- 4:47You probably won't be able to do this.
- 4:49If you're like me, you will not be able to accomplish this in
- 4:51one sitting because it feels awkward.
- 4:54And the first time you put it down, it's going to be like,
- 4:56wait, what? I don't know if I even want to
- 4:58do it this way, and it's not easy.
- 5:02I I don't know what to say. This is hard.
- 5:04You'll get into that stirred up place, but you keep coming back
- 5:07to it. You keep coming back to it.
- 5:09You keep coming back to it. And you'll start to figure out,
- 5:12OK, this is what I want, this is how I want to be remembered.
- 5:15And then once you have that, then you can figure out how do I
- 5:18want to reverse engineer my life living like that person that's
- 5:22on that piece of paper. Putting yourself in the position
- 5:26where you know you can live like that person that's on the paper.
- 5:30Give it a shot. All right, my friends, I hope
- 5:32you have a blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 5:35Bye.
