Transcript
- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another episode? Episode fifty-one already — can you believe it? Luna: Wow, fifty-one! That's awesome. I feel like I can actually say some real things now. What are we learning today? Lucas: Today we're talking about transport — how to get from A to B. You know, cars, buses, trains, bicycles. Useful stuff. Luna: Oh nice! I walk a lot, but I do take the bus sometimes. Okay, hit me with the first word. Lucas: First up: das Auto. That's 'the car' in German. Das Auto. Luna: Das Auto. Sounds like 'auto' — easy! Lucas: Exactly. Now let's try a sentence: Ich fahre mit dem Auto. That means 'I go by car' or 'I drive the car.' Ich fahre mit dem Auto. Luna: Ich fahre mit dem Auto. Oof, that's a mouthful. Ich fahre mit dem Auto. Lucas: You got it. Nice. Now, what if you want to ask someone? Fährst du mit dem Auto? — 'Do you go by car?' Fährst du mit dem Auto? Luna: Fährst du mit dem Auto? Right, because 'fahren' changes to 'fährst' for 'you.' Lucas: Perfect. That's the pattern. Next word: der Bus. 'The bus.' Der Bus. Luna: Der Bus. That's basically the same as English too! Lucas: Yeah, German likes to borrow words. So, 'I go by bus' — Ich fahre mit dem Bus. Try it. Luna: Ich fahre mit dem Bus. So it's 'mit dem' plus the vehicle. Makes sense. Lucas: Exactly. Now, a trickier one: der Zug. 'The train.' Der Zug. Luna: Der Zug. Hmm, that doesn't sound like 'train' at all. Der Zug. Lucas: No, it's its own word. But you'll hear it a lot at train stations. Ich fahre mit dem Zug. Luna: Ich fahre mit dem Zug. Okay, I'll remember that one. Zug, like 'pull' — trains pull carriages. Lucas: That's a good trick. Now last one: das Fahrrad. 'The bicycle.' Das Fahrrad. Luna: Das Fahrrad. That literally means 'driving wheel' or something? Fahr-rat? Lucas: Close! 'Fahren' means to drive, and 'Rad' means wheel. So Fahrrad. Try it. Luna: Das Fahrrad. Das Fahrrad. I like that word. Lucas: Good. So, 'I go by bike' — Ich fahre mit dem Fahrrad. Luna: Ich fahre mit dem Fahrrad. That's a longer one but I think I can say it. Ich fahre mit dem Fahrrad. Lucas: Let's do a little practice. I'll ask you a question and you answer using one of the words. Fährst du mit dem Auto? Luna: Uhh, let me think... Nein, ich fahre mit dem Bus. How's that? Lucas: Perfect! You used 'Bus.' Now answer: Fährst du mit dem Zug? Luna: Ja, ich fahre mit dem Zug. Actually, I do take the train sometimes. Lucas: And one more: Fährst du mit dem Fahrrad? Luna: Nein, ich fahre nicht mit dem Fahrrad. I'm more of a walker. Lucas: So you can also say 'nicht' to negate. Great. Let's review all four vehicles. Luna: Okay, I got das Auto, der Bus, der Zug, das Fahrrad. And the sentence: Ich fahre mit dem... Lucas: Then add the vehicle. Now you can talk about how you get around. Next time you're in Germany, you can say 'Ich fahre mit dem Zug' at the ticket counter. Luna: That's so useful. I'm going to practice these on my walk home. Thanks, Lucas! Lucas: You're welcome, Luna. Keep practicing, and we'll have more for you next time. This is Learn German with Fexingo — see you in episode fifty-two! Luna: Bye everyone! Keep fahring!
