- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is a Wednesday.
- 0:15It is the 10th of September. We're in double digits already.
- 0:20My goodness, it feels like it was just August.
- 0:22And here we are on the 10th of September.
- 0:23I hope you're going well. I hope that this week is
- 0:26treating you well. Here we are in the middle of the
- 0:28week and we have got a bit of a treat.
- 0:31Today we are going to read one of my favourite chapters in the
- 0:35Bible. This has got the story about
- 0:37Paul going into the space where there are so many different
- 0:41idols to all these different gods, and he has this incredible
- 0:45way of sharing the gospel message.
- 0:48He looks for some overlap. He looks for this space where he
- 0:52can present the gospel in a way that lands as part of a story
- 0:57that they already know. Oh, it's beautiful.
- 1:00And we get to share it today. So without any further ado, let
- 1:03us read together Acts chapter 17.
- 1:16Paul and Silas then travelled through the towns of Amphipolis
- 1:20and Apollonia and came to Thessalonica where there was a
- 1:24Jewish synagogue. As was Paul's custom, he went to
- 1:27the Jewish synagogue and for three Sabbath's in a row he used
- 1:31the scriptures to teach with the people.
- 1:33He explained the prophecies and proved that the Messiah must
- 1:37suffer and rise from the dead. He said this Jesus I'm telling
- 1:41you about is the Messiah. Some of the Jews who listened
- 1:46were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas along with many God
- 1:50fearing Greek men and quite a few prominent women.
- 1:53Some of the Jews were jealous, so they gathered some
- 1:56troublemakers from the marketplace to form a mob and
- 1:59start a riot. They attacked the home of Jason,
- 2:03searching for Paul and Silas so they could drag them out to the
- 2:06crowd. Not finding them there, they
- 2:08dragged out Jason and some of the other believers instead and
- 2:12took them before the City Council.
- 2:14Paul and Silas have caused trouble all over the world.
- 2:18They shouted and now they are disturbing our city too, and
- 2:23Jason has welcomed them into his house.
- 2:26They are all guilty of treason against Caesar, for they profess
- 2:29allegiance to another king named Jesus.
- 2:33The people of the city as well as the City Council were thrown
- 2:37into turmoil by these reports, so the officials forced Jason
- 2:41and the other believers to post bond and then they released
- 2:45them. That very night the believer
- 2:48sent Paul and Silas to Berea. When they arrived there, they
- 2:53went to the Jewish synagogue and the people of Berea were more
- 2:56open minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened
- 2:59eagerly to Paul's message. They searched the scriptures day
- 3:03after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.
- 3:07As a result, many Jews believed, as did many of the prominent
- 3:11Greek women and men. But then some Jews in
- 3:15Thessalonica learnt that Paul was preaching the word of God in
- 3:19Berea. They went there and stirred up
- 3:22trouble. The believers acted at once,
- 3:24sending Paul onto the coast while Silas and Timothy remained
- 3:28there. Those escorting Paul went with
- 3:31him all the way to Athens. Then they returned to Berea with
- 3:35instructions for Silas and Timothy to hurry and join him.
- 3:40While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was deeply
- 3:44troubled by all the idols he saw everywhere in the city.
- 3:48He went to the synagogue to reason with the Jews and the God
- 3:51fearing Gentiles, and he spoke daily in the public square to
- 3:55all who happened to be there. He also had a debate with some
- 3:58of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers.
- 4:01When he told them about Jesus and his resurrection, they said,
- 4:05what's this babbler trying to say with these strange ideas he
- 4:09has picked up? Others said he seems to be
- 4:13preaching about some foreign gods.
- 4:16Then they took him to the high council of the city.
- 4:19Come and tell us about this new teaching.
- 4:21They said you were saying some rather strange things and we
- 4:26want to know what it's all about.
- 4:28It should be explained that all Athenians, as well as the
- 4:31foreigners in Athens, seem to spend all their time discussing
- 4:35the latest ideas. So Paul, standing before the
- 4:38council, addressed them as follows.
- 4:41Men of Athens, I noticed that you were very religious in every
- 4:46way. For as I was walking along, I
- 4:49saw your many shrines, and one of your altars had this
- 4:54inscription on it to an unknown God.
- 4:58This God whom you worship without knowing is the one I'm
- 5:02telling you about. He is the God who made the world
- 5:06and everything in it. Since He is the Lord of heaven
- 5:09and earth, He doesn't live in man made temples, and human
- 5:14hands can't serve his needs, for He has no needs.
- 5:17He Himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies
- 5:22every need. From one man He created all the
- 5:26nations throughout the whole earth.
- 5:29He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and He
- 5:33determined their boundaries. His purpose was for the nations
- 5:36to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward Him and
- 5:41find Him, though He is not far from any one of us.
- 5:45For in Him we live and move and exist.
- 5:50As some of your own poets have said, we are His offspring.
- 5:54And since this is true, we shouldn't think of God as an
- 5:57idol designed by Craftsman from gold or silver or stone.
- 6:02God overlook people's ignorance about these things in earlier
- 6:05times, but now He commands everyone everywhere to repent of
- 6:10their sins and turn to Him. For he has set a day for judging
- 6:15the world with justice by the man he has appointed.
- 6:19And he proved to everyone who this is by raising him from the
- 6:23dead. When they heard Paul speak about
- 6:26the resurrection of the dead, some laughed in contempt, but
- 6:29others said we want to hear more about this later.
- 6:33That ended Paul's discussion with them, but some joined him
- 6:37and became believers. Among them were Dionysius, a
- 6:41member of the council, a woman named Damaris, and others with
- 6:45them. My Lord, your presence is
- 6:57written on the hearts of every human.
- 7:00Every man, woman and child in this world is just beautifully
- 7:04and carefully made by you, and your fingerprints are all over
- 7:08them. And here we hear that although
- 7:11they didn't know you, these men and women of Athens made this
- 7:16temple to the unknown God, and poetry to this God who they
- 7:21didn't know. Our Lord, we do know you though.
- 7:26You have come and you have taught us not just how to live
- 7:29and not just how to be saved, but you have taught us about
- 7:32your very nature, the nature of the Father and yourself and the
- 7:38Spirit that now lives in us to know that you are God and a God
- 7:44of love, of compassion, of mercy, and of goodness beyond
- 7:51our ability to fathom. And so we come before you and we
- 7:56praise you, knowing who you are and so grateful for what Jesus
- 8:00has done in showing us your very nature.
- 8:05So we worship you, we lift up our hearts, we give them to you,
- 8:10for all we are is yours. We are your people, and we love
- 8:14you. And we pray all of this in your
- 8:16wonderful name, Jesus, Amen.
