- 0:01Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett.
- 0:06Speaker 2: All right, well, it is April fifteenth, twenty twenty five.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Actually, one of my.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Dad's favorite days of the year is tax Day because
- 0:15Speaker 2: by the time Tax Day was here, he'd making sure
- 0:19Speaker 2: all the clients got their tax returns in and we'd
- 0:22Speaker 2: run over the post office on thirty fourth Street, and
- 0:26Speaker 2: you know, the rest is history. He'd filed the taxes
- 0:29Speaker 2: for people and then we go off to Yankee Stadium
- 0:32Speaker 2: or Shay Stadium or the film for him a couple
- 0:34Speaker 2: of times on Tax Day. But this Tax Day, it's
- 0:41Speaker 2: so exciting because we woke up today on the day
- 0:48Speaker 2: we honor my dad's.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Passing two years later. The Cubs his favorite.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Team, and the two the New York teams I met
- 1:01Speaker 2: most to us as I was growing up and even
- 1:03Speaker 2: into adulthood with my dad, and I still go into games.
- 1:06Speaker 1: The Yankees and the.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Mets all all are in first place. On April fifteenth,
- 1:15Speaker 2: the Yankees, the Mets, and the Cubs are all in
- 1:18Speaker 2: first place. They have one leg up in their division,
- 1:21Speaker 2: and I believe that is for Pops right there. On
- 1:25Speaker 2: the two year anniversary of his passing two years ago,
- 1:28Speaker 2: around the time I was just sitting by his bed
- 1:30Speaker 2: and watching him fight to stay alive until seven to
- 1:41Speaker 2: twenty six pm.
- 1:44Speaker 1: I don't want to get two graphic or too depressing, because.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Here's how I want to remember my dad as the vibrant,
- 1:50Speaker 2: always active, plastic bag carrying son of a gun that
- 1:55Speaker 2: my dad was. And I know some may get a
- 2:00Speaker 2: little emotional hearing his voice, but I hadn't played this
- 2:04Speaker 2: one yet for you. But if you're wondering why I
- 2:07Speaker 2: have to be everywhere at once and all the time,
- 2:11Speaker 2: I think this audio from my dad directly, Thank god
- 2:16Speaker 2: I capture this says it all. Take a listen to
- 2:18Speaker 2: what he said in February of twenty twenty three. As
- 2:23Speaker 2: I went around for the years.
- 2:30Speaker 1: An event nothings. Most stuff is cast the answer or
- 2:38Speaker 1: twice because of the water.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Accept the stuff, Accept the things except the or like
- 2:44Speaker 2: recreational night.
- 2:50Speaker 1: We were you walked a lot cold.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Snow or not that bank in front of us.
- 3:10Speaker 1: It was always Wendy last year and and yeah we
- 3:19Speaker 1: always listen to the radio.
- 3:20Speaker 2: But that's how I remember my dad always talking about
- 3:24Speaker 2: where we ended up, all the stories for thirty one years.
- 3:30Speaker 2: And I know he's probably talking about things with mister Steinbrenner.
- 3:33Speaker 1: And Yogi and Whitey and.
- 3:35Speaker 2: All legends, even Ricky Henderson and Buddy up above. And
- 3:41Speaker 2: I know most importantly he's watching over us alone with
- 3:44Speaker 2: God every day that I am on this earth, that
- 3:48Speaker 2: my mom's on this earth. Then vis on this earth.
- 3:51Speaker 2: That Abby, that Gabby, He's with us always.
- 3:55Speaker 1: But I wanted you to hear that.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Because the one one Leg Up Moniker really was that
- 4:02Speaker 2: we kept having one leg up wherever we went, and
- 4:09Speaker 2: he made sure of that. He got me connected into
- 4:12Speaker 2: these worlds, and I hope I'm making.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Him proud with these connections.
- 4:17Speaker 2: I continue to build and make and open doors with
- 4:21Speaker 2: this podcast, and I'll never forget. He actually told me,
- 4:24Speaker 2: how do you stand out as one of seven hundred podcasters?
- 4:29Speaker 2: And I said, well, you know, I just keep going,
- 4:33Speaker 2: and all of a sudden the name hit. Thanks to
- 4:35Speaker 2: my stepdad, Vic and I, we came up with the
- 4:40Speaker 2: One Leg Up Moniker and it's stuck. It has stuck
- 4:43Speaker 2: more so than any other podcast title I might have
- 4:45Speaker 2: had over the years. So Dad, Pops, I know you
- 4:52Speaker 2: engineered the Yankees, Cubs and Mets being in first place
- 4:56Speaker 2: on the anniversary of your passing.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I also won't remember. I won't how do I say it.
- 5:07Speaker 1: I won't.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Look at life to douce to the last couple of
- 5:12Speaker 2: days of your life. I'll look at your life as
- 5:15Speaker 2: someone heroic. I mean as a kid watching my dad
- 5:20Speaker 2: come up to the Viscardi school with two plastic bags
- 5:23Speaker 2: in hand.
- 5:23Speaker 1: And then put me on his shoulders and then put me.
- 5:27Speaker 2: On his shoulders was pretty special with the bags in hand,
- 5:33Speaker 2: by the way, And I know you remember that from
- 5:40Speaker 2: above as well, Pops, And I know you're smiling down
- 5:43Speaker 2: on all of us.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Like you did your final couple of days of life.
- 5:51Speaker 2: There are some great images of my dad just walking
- 5:54Speaker 2: around plastic bag, blue jacket, his trademark right there, or
- 5:59Speaker 2: walk Yankee same with the cup in his hand, the
- 6:02Speaker 2: collector's cup that he picked up after a game. I
- 6:05Speaker 2: think there'd so many things, so many things, but the
- 6:11Speaker 2: one thing.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Is that he did make sure we had one leg up.
- 6:16Speaker 1: He did make sure we.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Had the doors open, and God blessed twenty five years
- 6:22Speaker 2: older with the Yankees things to so many people, the
- 6:25Speaker 2: doors are still open there. He made that happen. He
- 6:28Speaker 2: helped make that happen with George Steinberger and those like
- 6:39Speaker 2: Nithan and Caleb and Frank, Luna and Madison and justin
- 6:45Speaker 2: time baseball last year with us well, I feel like
- 6:48Speaker 2: they all.
- 6:51Speaker 1: And of course Gad becoming lonely, they all.
- 6:56Speaker 2: And body what my dad did for me by continuing
- 7:01Speaker 2: his work of opening doors for me, and now the
- 7:05Speaker 2: kindness of so many others, and Miss Simon's working opening
- 7:08Speaker 2: the doors the kinds of so many others to continue
- 7:10Speaker 2: those legacies together, it's pretty special. And so to all
- 7:19Speaker 2: those on earth with me working to continue what my
- 7:22Speaker 2: dad built for me. As I worked to continue what
- 7:25Speaker 2: Dad built for me, I want Mom built for me.
- 7:30Speaker 2: I'm ultra preciative that the work can still keep going.
- 7:35Speaker 2: It's what he would want because his plan what's remained
- 7:40Speaker 2: ultimately have that one leg up on life. And through
- 7:44Speaker 2: Mom and Vic and Pops, I've been inspired to continue
- 7:49Speaker 2: that work and as Gabby says, stay healthy in the process.
- 7:55Speaker 1: That's nice too. We did go everywhere. My Dad is
- 7:59Speaker 1: right on that.
- 8:02Speaker 2: We certainly went everywhere.
- 8:06Speaker 1: As I went around for the years, remiss an event.
- 8:16Speaker 2: And while I felt like I've slowed down because I
- 8:19Speaker 2: do miss some things, maybe it's a sign of maturity
- 8:23Speaker 2: that I'm putting health first at times and just taking
- 8:30Speaker 2: the advice that it will come at the right time.
- 8:35Speaker 2: But every event that is something I've always right to
- 8:38Speaker 2: be at. And you could hear it right there from
- 8:42Speaker 2: my dad. Why because he remembered he was so proud
- 8:45Speaker 2: that we were at every event and look at this
- 8:50Speaker 2: twenty twenty four, we were at the World Series.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Okay, So I could say my dad.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Ingratiated me to that idea of being everywhere.
- 9:02Speaker 1: But what's in my.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Gut has changed and maybe matured, and maybe some advice
- 9:17Speaker 2: has helped me out too along the way for sure,
- 9:21Speaker 2: to know.
- 9:24Speaker 1: When to.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Be there at the right time, in the right place,
- 9:35Speaker 2: just like my dad always had us. He and my
- 9:39Speaker 2: mom always knew how to have and my dad and
- 9:41Speaker 2: my stepdad Vic always knew how to help me have
- 9:43Speaker 2: one leg up. And that trait has truly passed down
- 9:48Speaker 2: to me. And now I'm working every day on my own,
- 9:54Speaker 2: in my own journey, in my own path, with so
- 9:58Speaker 2: much support to carry that one leg up everywhere I go.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Love you, Pop, monsieur, but thanks for laying the foundation
- 10:09Speaker 2: that is one leg up Alex, along with my mom
- 10:13Speaker 2: and my stepdad, your earthly family misses you today and
- 10:18Speaker 2: every day, but we know you're with us.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Just the same.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Tell mister s tell Whitey, tell Yogi, tell Buddy Arrolson.
- 10:31Speaker 2: I say hello, and then I miss them all, but
- 10:37Speaker 2: that I know all of you are looking down at
- 10:41Speaker 2: us every day, helping us have one leg up on life.
