Transcript
- 0:05[SPEAKER_00]: Hello!
- 0:06[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to the M&P NFL podcast, I'm Connor Ward.
- 0:10[SPEAKER_00]: That is Albert Brear in Massachusetts.
- 0:12[SPEAKER_00]: Normally we have about college football for the first 45 minutes of this and talk about dropping our kids off in practice and T-ball and all that stuff.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_00]: But my God is Albert Securities, a great guest today.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_00]: Scott Turner, Longtime NFL, offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, wide receiver of
- 0:27[SPEAKER_00]: My once beloved Cleveland Browns.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_00]: He got Josh Gordon off the shnide that year and he's so fired up about I thought we were going to the Super Bowl But I'm so excited because what Scott has done is he's broken down more top six quarterbacks on the board I feel like the discourse around the quarterbacks in this draft has been just a Bismal Albert and I think this cuts through all the crap we get to clean it up a little bit and the cool thing about this conversation And I think people can be really excited about
- 0:53[SPEAKER_02]: is we do talk about the process that all these guys are going through and what he would be doing if he was a team which he was with teams for the last 15 years and was part of the process of drafting guys in the first round like Cam Newton and Teddy Bridgewater.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_02]: So excited for everybody to get to listen to all of that.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_00]: Alright, we're back and we have a very special guest here.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_00]: Someone who listeners of the pod you guys will finally say there's at least two people on this show who know what they're talking about.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_00]: I get to remove myself.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_00]: Albert, I'm going to let you handle the introduction as you brought Scott to us today, and I'm pretty psyched to dig into all this.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so Scott and I actually go pretty far back.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_02]: I think you and I might have first cross paths when you were in Cleveland working for Judd and your dad was the OC, we're bringing in Scott Turner, longtime NFL assistant coach.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm gonna run through your resume real quick.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_02]: Browns receivers coach when Josh Gordon was there.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_02]: In fact, I think the first time I ever met Scott might have been, I was an NFL network, I was on the field.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_02]: and they were playing New England.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_02]: It was a great game.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_02]: And I remember one of Scott's guys, Josh Gordon just rose to the keep to leave for like a 70 yard touchdown that game.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_02]: You probably remember that Scott.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was the first play of the drive, but yeah, Josh was on an epic run.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_01]: He had back to back 200 yard games and then you know, so to leave was going to follow him around the field.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_01]: He ended up having 10 catches for 150 yards and we, uh,
- 2:21[SPEAKER_01]: We and it was the ADR.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_01]: It was an ADR touch.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_01]: I saw a lot of it.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously came on one play, but You know, it was funny though.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_01]: We we of Jason Campbell was the quarterback and we had a great game and offensively and really overall We scored a touchdown with two minutes and 45 seconds left to go up by 12 and we lost the game So they went the Patriots went and scored a touchdown kicked an on-site kick got it and then scored another touchdown
- 2:46[SPEAKER_01]: that's why we're doing that's why we're doing really really kind of kicked like a 60 yarder with no time left and we didn't quite get there but it was a good we weren't very good before in 12 but that was later in the year and we that was one of our better games even though we didn't pull off the
- 3:04[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so after that, Scott started, like really honed in on coaching quarterbacks, which is a huge reason why we haven't here today, was a college quarterback himself, quarterbacks coach with the Vikings from 14 to 16, the Teddy Bridgewater era there, went to Michigan for a year,
- 3:22[SPEAKER_02]: Then Carolina was the quarterbacks coach there with Cam Newton, went to Washington under Ron Rivera, becomes the offensive coordinator there for three years, then he's with Josh McDaniels for a couple of years in Las Vegas, did call plays at the end there too, in his time with the Raiders, and so Scott's got play calling experience, got quarterback coach experience,
- 3:47[SPEAKER_02]: Well, we want to do here in Connor and I had talked about this as bring in somebody who has just really great experience of evaluating the position Scott where I want to start with you on all this is just you know it's always interesting for me because I try to get ahead on this stuff and so I'll ask scouts about quarterbacks in the fall and I'll say like who should I be paying attention to who should I be washing out that I'm a scout or a coach but I like to pay attention to it.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, what I'll hear from a lot of guys at that point is, well, I like this guy, but I haven't studied him yet.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_02]: So I don't know yet.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_02]: So I want to start there for our listeners before we get dive into the individual guys in the difference between just watching a guy and having an opinion on a guy and then how that opinion evolves when you start studying him in the difference between watching and studying in quarterback.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, for sure.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think we all start, especially as coaches, like we're focused on the season at hand.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_01]: So, but you know, I think a lot of us is coaching NFL, you're a fan of the game.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_01]: So, like Saturdays, you know, if you're hanging around the hotel or you get some time at home, like you're watching college football.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_01]: And you get some you see some of these top guys so that's you know, generally how the fan and you and you notice like you can see just like a fan Would like you see if the guys making plays or not like you have a general feel like all right this guy you know this guy's making the team go They're scoring a lot You know, you see who the top guys are the teams that are winning So you have a general idea and then you know this time or you know as soon as the season's over
- 5:18[SPEAKER_01]: and you get your college list and then you start looking at it and you study them and the number one thing you look at is just kind of what their physical makeup is.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_01]: You know what's their height weight, you know, as you watch the tape, you get a feel for like arm strength, is you making the accuracy, you know, you
- 5:37[SPEAKER_01]: you see that on completion percentage, but then like a lot of times you'll watch tape and like guys are making great catches and they're not getting the quietest minutes yard after catch because the badball placement even though the stats might look good.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_01]: And then the one thing that I think that like the coaches and the really good evaluators do is they try to understand like what is this quarterback being asked to do?
- 5:58[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 5:58[SPEAKER_01]: Like within their offense.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_01]: So whether it's
- 6:02[SPEAKER_01]: You know, whether it's a college offense that you've evaluated before, so you generally know their rules or like reaching out to a coach or maybe it's not even a coach on that exact staff, but like it might be an aerate offense or like someone that I knew there was an aerate, just talked to him about what in, in my aerate is very common.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_01]: So you kind of had a feel and, and then, you know, we'll get into this.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_01]: I think when we talk about Mendoza, but like,
- 6:26[SPEAKER_01]: What is the quarterback asked to do?
- 6:28[SPEAKER_01]: And then like, how well is he, you know, doing that?
- 6:33[SPEAKER_01]: How well is he accomplishing what his goal is within the offense?
- 6:36[SPEAKER_01]: And then, you know, the guys that are asked to do a lot, obviously, that's good.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's a lot of the discourse that's going on right now about the quarterbacks and what they're asked to do, but, you know,
- 6:51[SPEAKER_01]: just because the guy hasn't necessarily been asked to do that like you can't fault them for that now with that being said like you try to dig into a little bit and it's hard to get answers because obviously everyone's to sell their guy but it's like all right you didn't ask the quarterback to do a lot why didn't you and then if that coaches had
- 7:07[SPEAKER_01]: been coaching for 15 years and this is what they've always done.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_01]: Well, then that's not a fault to the kid, but like if you have a quarterback, the previous guy was making much checks of the line of scrimmage or getting you out of place and then this the next quarterback, you don't see any of that, then you know, you try to figure out why, you know, why that is.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_01]: But I always try to like what I always tried to do was not blame a quarterback or
- 7:36[SPEAKER_01]: because he wasn't asked to do something, you know what I mean?
- 7:38[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, and now, because he's not asked to do it like, if you feel like it's something you're going to need him to do, then that's what the meetings are for, you know, that's what asking around the different coaches, different people, maybe he's either played against and say, do you think that he is capable of those things?
- 7:58[SPEAKER_01]: And to me, that's all part of the process, but it's hard for me to just truly evaluate a player, especially at the quarterback position, if you don't know what it is, he's coached to and asked to do.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_01]: And then does he master that, you know?
- 8:17[UNKNOWN]: So.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_00]: That's why I'm so happy to have Scott here because I feel like the discourse this year, especially with the quarterback class has left planet Earth in terms of, you know, sanity.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_00]: And I was actually going through this the other day.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_00]: Literally, uh, everybody after Ty Simpson has been pumped by someone to taste him.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, and like, it's just like this is what we do now.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_00]: When a quarterback doesn't present his complete, we're like, I'll just make him a tight end and have him, you know, slam into the defense 80 times a game and that'll be fine.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_00]: But like,
- 8:47[SPEAKER_00]: Before we get into Mendoza, do you feel that there is at least some element of like you could pick your flavor beyond the top two and you could have a guy that might be useful in this draft class, or do you think it is as presented where everyone's kind of like, hey, after the top two guys here, we're going to have a hard time finding someone to help.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think, no, I think it is what you said.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's a choose your flavor.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's what you're looking for.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_01]: I think, you know,
- 9:19[SPEAKER_01]: If you have a quarterback that's like established a little more established and you want you want to take a chance on a guy like drew a lot that's going to be more of a trait.
- 9:33[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you're not picking him necessarily based on how he played but based off of what you think he can be because of his size athleticism arm strength.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_01]: You know, or then or do you have a guy that like is a.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_01]: You know, a quarterback that, you know, is going to get banged up, you want, you're, you want like a long-term backup that's going to be ready to go in and play three, four games that might be a, that might be a nussmaharan and I'm just kind of throwing it out there is like a thought of a,
- 10:00[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be maybe a higher floor, lower ceiling type of player.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_01]: So I think it all is depending on exactly what you're looking for, a little bit maybe potential in style of offense.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_01]: But it is, I think it truly is a pick your flavor.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_01]: I think outside of the top two guys, I think it's going to be a little bit of a surprise I think you're going to go on draft day on whether it's right air saturday and it'd
- 10:30[SPEAKER_02]: for sure and like I think one of the good things about having Scott here too is like he went through this yeah with Teddy Bridgewater and the Viking scouting a quarter back in 2004 to get too many times
- 10:45[SPEAKER_02]: And then even like your first NFL job was the year that Cam Newton got the Carolina.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_02]: You know, so you at least were around for that.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_02]: I know you were at the time just starting out, you know, but you got to observe a lot of things I'm sure.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_02]: And so let's just start with Fernando Mendoza.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_02]: When you, so, you know, I think everybody knows the basics here, unbelievable
- 11:13[SPEAKER_02]: When's the high's been trophy?
- 11:15[SPEAKER_02]: When's the national title at a school?
- 11:17[SPEAKER_02]: No one thought was capable of winning a national title until a couple of years ago.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_02]: When you watch Fentford, Ando Mendoza, the player, where are the things that just immediately jump off the screen at you?
- 11:29[SPEAKER_01]: To me, the poise and the accuracy are the two things that really jump out of me.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_01]: Like, he never seems flustered back there.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_01]: The ball, his ball placement's outstanding.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_01]: You know, that's, you know, and different people in different evaluators who've talked about this, like, there's a lot of truth.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, there's a lot of pick and stick throws, like he's picking out matchups and he's throwing the ball to those guys, but his ability to whether it's lead them down the field or throw a back shoulder based off the DB's leverage.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_01]: Some of the up and away throws where the his guy can get it or the and the deep and the defense can't.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_01]: especially in the red zone, some of that accuracy that he showed down there, like that's what really jumped out of me.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_01]: I watched a lot of him pretty much as much as I could over the course of this season, Mike Shannon, the offensive coordinator, and he and a play for me at Pitt and is a good friend of mine.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_01]: So I was following him, you know, even before I even knew who for NANDOM and those of was, you know what I mean?
- 12:25[SPEAKER_01]: And, uh,
- 12:25[SPEAKER_01]: So I watched him and I had coverage with more of the court season.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_01]: Like you guys got a pretty good quarterback and he felt the same way.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_01]: I think the more you watched him, the more you saw some of that sneaky athleticism.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_01]: And then his size, like that six, six, five, two, 36, that goes a long way of being able to stand in there, take the hits, kind of absorb it, you know, still deliver the ball with bodies around you.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_01]: He doesn't need a lot of space to generate power throw in the football.
- 12:53[SPEAKER_01]: It does he have is he have the same arm as Josh Allen though, but he's got plenty plenty arm strength.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think you need.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_01]: anything's going to be an issue there, you know, so, so all that, like as far as a evaluation based off of traits or where you're looking for for an NFL quarterback, I think he hits every, every checkmark like, and I know a lot's gotten into like the scheme part of it, and that's valid.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_01]: Like, it's not an NFL scheme.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_01]: Like, there's not a lot of reading the middle of the field.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_01]: There's not a lot of like the concepts you necessarily see.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_01]: in the league, but that goes back to what we were talking about earlier, that's just not what they're asked to do in his offense.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_01]: And he was very successful running the offense that he came in and learned in a year, too.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 13:40[SPEAKER_01]: Like he came in in the spring.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_01]: and picked it up and obviously granted as well as you possibly could.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_01]: I think his ability execute in two-minute drill.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think it was three different times he threw in receptions that where the where the team was able to tie the game up or take the lead.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_01]: because of that and he responded with leading the team down to throw gaming touchdowns all three times and there's something definitely to be said for that.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's no secret he's gonna go first in the draft and I think the Raiders understand like, yeah, he's gonna, he has three through five passes under center in his entire college career.
- 14:25[SPEAKER_01]: So like there's gonna be a little bit of
- 14:28[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the learning curve there and that's why they sign curp, you know, I mean, and it's good.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_01]: It takes the pressure off of the player and it takes the pressure off the organization to a certain extent To get the guy ready and everyone makes a big deal out of the under center gun stuff
- 14:44[SPEAKER_01]: And it's not like, it always, I shouldn't say bothers me, but like, it's not like, you can teach, you can teach one of these athletes how to take a snap from under center in about 25 minutes, you know what I mean?
- 14:57[SPEAKER_01]: And they're going to be fine, like, that's not it's, it's the, it's the actual action and turning your back to the defense that guys have, they just got to get used to it, you know what I mean?
- 15:07[SPEAKER_01]: And they got to understand that like,
- 15:09[SPEAKER_01]: you're doing this because it's going to affect the defense and get your eyes around those linebacks from the last termage, especially having effective running game and it's going to open up a lot of holes for your throw the ball and get exposed to plays.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_01]: I think he understands throwing in windows.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_01]: They threw a bunch of the strike routes and stuff in Indiana based off the RPOs.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_01]: Again, there's going to be a learning curve.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_01]: And, but I don't think it's anything he's going to have an issue with.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_02]: Like as you have intimate knowledge of that offense, right?
- 15:43[SPEAKER_02]: Because you know, obviously you've got the relationship with Mike, where is the biggest learning curve?
- 15:48[SPEAKER_02]: Like, where do you think you can see the least of what he's going to be on tape?
- 15:53[SPEAKER_02]: You know what I mean?
- 15:53[SPEAKER_02]: What where is like the translation hardest?
- 15:56[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think what he's didn't college versus what he's going to have to do in the NFL.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so we mentioned the back to the defense stuff and then I think just like just the the amount of different you know route concepts that you're going to run the the reading of the middle of the field I think on some of those types of concepts there wasn't a ton of you are being and just going through like your your progression.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_01]: a lot because like I said like they were so such a good run game they were ahead of the sticks a lot like in so a lot of it was more of a pick and stick you know one-on-one you know take my one-on-one matchup or we're gonna run the ball because we're in shell defense um and you know there there is gonna be some of that now his stuff was RPO they didn't have a lot of kills in their offense
- 16:43[SPEAKER_01]: he's going to have to do that in pre-snap with kills and checks and I know that you know the cans that Clint has in his offense that he'll have to learn which he'll learn.
- 16:54[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's a smart guy.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think that's going to be an issue.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_01]: Playing with your back to the defense, like I said, off the play action and then just the concept, you know, the concepts and going through progression and having familiarity with those things and you know he's going
- 17:12[SPEAKER_01]: training camp.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_01]: And then, you know, obviously, I'm sure that I'll have a plan for him if he's not going to be the day one starter to where he continues to develop during the development during the season and be ready to play whenever they need him.
- 17:23[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to ask a dumb question, because unlike my co-host here, I was never one to sling it.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_00]: Like Albert was a Lincoln sub berry QB.
- 17:30[SPEAKER_00]: He was
- 17:31[SPEAKER_00]: According to himself really low really low level.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_00]: I was going to be able to play defense.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_00]: I was a backup quarterback Okay, I think if there was a start.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, great.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, good gigantic political mess there That's why he wasn't the starting cubie.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_00]: I think we don't know it but that was a back to the defense I mean, is that just a matter of almost being comfortable with the unknown or being okay with being like just crushed at one point or is it like is there something else to that?
- 18:01[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think it's about getting hit because it's very fast.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_01]: It's just like when you're in the Shaka and your eyes are always forward, so like you can see everything about.
- 18:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, or like I'm gonna read in the will line back or air.
- 18:16[SPEAKER_01]: If you get a lot of depth, I'm checking it down.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so like you get the snap and you eyes on the field and you find the will.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_01]: Whereas, you know, okay, we're trying to affect this line back with with hard play action.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm gonna come out, I'm bury the ball of the writing back and then I got to snap my eyes around.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_01]: and then find it.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_01]: So just that repeated motion action of getting your eyes back to where they need to be, as well as your feet and being ready, being ready to throw.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_01]: That's it.
- 18:41[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, because you know, you're going to lose, you're going to lose vision of what you're reading for a short period of time.
- 18:47[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 18:49[SPEAKER_01]: And obviously it works.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_01]: And the benefit of that is because your eyes
- 19:01[SPEAKER_02]: And like I that you had a lot of work to do with Cam on that and Caroline I just seem right because he was almost exclusively out of the shotgun in college.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, right.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we did and I was just on like I was just on the a show in the DC area and they were talking because their their big thing is like with Jay and Daniels now like he they're going to transition to David Blau and like he's running the Detroit offense if you will you know his version of it and they're going to they're like that all the talk there
- 19:30[SPEAKER_01]: And like when you have somebody like Jayden or like we had like with cam like yeah You have to do some of that with cam, but like also we play in the gun a lot with cam Because he Because he now you play in 11 on 11 football because of his ability to be to be a runner where I'm just like like I've said that on The some of the podcast talking about the washing stuff is like I'm sure they're gonna get Jayden understand her stuff Some but like he's gonna play in gun as well too and I'm and I'm sure there's gonna be some of that You know, with
- 19:59[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, those are for different reasons more so maybe for his comfort level and like you know, I don't know what they're going to do like Atlanta was almost all in the pistol because Kirk was recovering from the Achilles, I'm like they didn't want him to keep going our center, like are they going to.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_01]: implement some pistol stuff because Kirk's got familiarity with it.
- 20:16[SPEAKER_01]: And then Mendoza, you know, he's in the gun, but you still, you know, I mean, you still get some of that under center cell from the right.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_01]: So there's a little bit there's fluidity like they're going to they're going to adjust the offense to fit the skill set of the quarterback and they're going to and the quarterback's going to adjust what he does it.
- 20:33[SPEAKER_01]: There's always like a.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_01]: you're going to meet in the middle, you know, I mean, and then where exactly you end up, you know, I mean, you know, you, you find that after practice, you know, with practice and not only the quarterback too, but like the other players on the team, you know, I mean, like where, where do they do?
- 20:47[SPEAKER_00]: Well, do you have a hardened, fast rule on that as a coach where, you know, and I know it's not the same position, but everyone last year was talking about, Ashley and Jenny likes to stand a certain way before he gets the ball and I forget what Chip Kelly called it, like, Freddy,
- 21:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think you do, I mean, there's a lot of guys that are like, there's a lot of like the trend now and quarterback to help is be like, and when you're in the shotgun, have your left foot forward in the shotgun where it's always been right foot forward.
- 21:42[SPEAKER_01]: And there's certain coaches that are like, no, we're left foot forward team, like, and like, I, like, I don't, it's for me, like it wasn't as important.
- 21:51[SPEAKER_01]: It was like as long as like the timing and the rhythm and the dress match up with our route concepts,
- 21:57[SPEAKER_01]: For example, like in Carolina, a cam was our starter.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_01]: He'd like to be left forward and then Kyle Allen.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_01]: He'd like to be right-foot because he always felt like he was like a half a step ahead of everything with the drops.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_01]: When his left foot was forward, and I said, yeah, that's no problem, you know what I mean?
- 22:12[SPEAKER_01]: And he had it, you know, that's just whatever.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_01]: So you work with guys based on how they feel.
- 22:16[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of times, like, okay, you know, be, hey, let's try it the way that everyone else is doing it.
- 22:22[SPEAKER_01]: And then we can work through it, you know what I mean?
- 22:25[SPEAKER_01]: But to me, there's always conversations to be had there.
- 22:30[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, sometimes, some things are super important, but other things that's like, hey, if this is you have a comfort level, do some of the certain way and the ball is getting out on time and accurate and you're seeing everything, then like, I got, I got no issue with it.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, since we know where he's going then, and you're looking at what you're looking at, would you play him right away?
- 22:49[SPEAKER_01]: The question.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_01]: I would, I just feel like you knew you're going to pick him, like, he's going to get, you know, you got a new staff, you're going to have a lot of time with the offseason.
- 23:05[SPEAKER_01]: You know, now if you get around him and you think, hey, this isn't going to be good, but I just feel like he's going to be ready to play.
- 23:13[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like, you know, if he shows these ready play, like he should play, you know what I mean?
- 23:19[SPEAKER_01]: And I think a lot of it's like,
- 23:22[SPEAKER_01]: if it's close, like if him and Kirk like now, Kirk's his way ahead of them.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_01]: And because you got to think about the team too, like you can't, that's where you see people lose locker rooms when they play a guy that's clearly not the better player.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 23:36[SPEAKER_01]: But if he shows he's the better player, then I think he should play and understand that he's gonna go through some lumps and you can help him as a play caller.
- 23:50[SPEAKER_01]: And then he's going to grow and and feel that comfort level, but I mean, like, it's only a matter of time, right?
- 23:55[SPEAKER_01]: You pick guy first the first round of space to say the number one overall, like he's going to be your starter.
- 24:00[SPEAKER_01]: So if he shows that he isn't practice, like, I don't think that there's any reason to keep one of the bench.
- 24:06[SPEAKER_02]: Because as you know, as you know, as you see, so well, just tell us what.
- 24:10[SPEAKER_02]: like what you've heard about him personally, like what like the intangibles, the leadership, obviously like there's no questioning the results, right?
- 24:18[SPEAKER_02]: Like, yeah, I'm not fricking Indiana, I don't know.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_02]: I just don't see him, I just don't see him, I just don't see him.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_02]: No, I mean, what would Mike tell you about him as a person?
- 24:27[SPEAKER_01]: Just that he's all ball, like super serious.
- 24:29[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes, Mike, we try to get him to relax a little bit.
- 24:33[SPEAKER_01]: He's just kind of, but just that he's a great person, team first, works hard, always trying to get better.
- 24:43[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, their first team mates, kind of basically, as advertised, all the stuff you see with the interviews and all that kind of stuff that we're gonna laugh at, but it's just him being himself, and he's a genuine person that works hard.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, it looks, you're just going to do everything you can to be successful.
- 25:01[SPEAKER_00]: Before we move to Ty Simpson, Scott, I'm just curious, like, and I guess how it works and also what you would do.
- 25:09[SPEAKER_00]: So forgive me if this isn't exactly the way it works, but like you have Kirk Cousins and then you draft Fernandem and Dosa and you say, here's what my day one, practice rep kind of breakdown is going to be for training camp.
- 25:20[SPEAKER_00]: Are you 80, 20, you 50, 50, I mean, understanding that Fernandos going to need so many reps with his back to the defense.
- 25:26[SPEAKER_00]: how are you breaking this whole thing down?
- 25:28[SPEAKER_00]: What's your pitch to the head coach in that situation?
- 25:30[SPEAKER_01]: Well, in training camp, it's easy because you have 1s, 2s and 3s.
- 25:38[SPEAKER_01]: And normally, as the practice is going on, you end up eliminating the 3s because guys get banged up.
- 25:44[SPEAKER_01]: But you have a first and second group.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_01]: And if you have a set of 10 plays,
- 25:49[SPEAKER_01]: let's say whatever like you're going to have five with the ones and five with the two.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_01]: So he's going to get his reps. You know what I mean?
- 25:56[SPEAKER_01]: And he's going to be able to work through it.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_01]: And so now what you want to do is he want to be like, okay, you know, and especially with like Kirk being an older guy, like maybe one period of Kirk won't get any reps. And that'll be like Mendoza gets a set with the ones.
- 26:11[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 26:12[SPEAKER_01]: And then, um,
- 26:14[SPEAKER_01]: and then whoever your third quarterback is that's the chance that he could maybe steal a couple of reps.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_01]: But that's going to be the breakdown of like, okay, how much do we give me those over the ones?
- 26:25[SPEAKER_01]: These are going to be the guys.
- 26:27[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to ultimately be playing with like, you want him throwing the Brock Bowers.
- 26:31[SPEAKER_01]: You want him throwing, you know what I mean?
- 26:34[SPEAKER_01]: to whatever.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 26:37[SPEAKER_01]: They need some receivers in there now.
- 26:38[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my god.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my god.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_01]: My guy tuck there.
- 26:41[SPEAKER_01]: My guy tuck there.
- 26:42[SPEAKER_01]: My guy.
- 26:42[SPEAKER_01]: Tray tuck.
- 26:45[SPEAKER_01]: You know the worries about that.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_01]: But you know, I know they draft the jackback.
- 26:51[SPEAKER_01]: But the point is like those guys that are going to be with the wants.
- 26:54[SPEAKER_01]: Michael Mayer.
- 26:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah the back feel like you'd those are the guys you want to work him up because that's who he's going to be that's who he's going to be Ultimately playing with but Kirk needs that to like if he's going to be a starter So there's just a balance of that like the sheer volume of reps like I don't think there's any problem with that It's making sure he's getting the reps with with the right guys and sometimes like we've done that before in the past like
- 27:18[SPEAKER_01]: You know, when we had Teddy, like we had Kyle Rudolph was our tight end, and he was at the ones and Matt Castle starter, and Teddy was the backup, but like we might, we might have like a deep cross route to the tight end, there was like the second play with the twos, and we'd be like, hey, like Kevin Stephans who's tight in goes, but like Kevin put, put Kyle in that second play with the twos and explain it to him, because like we want Teddy to throw him the ball.
- 27:41[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 27:41[SPEAKER_01]: So like, you can get, you can manufacture those.
- 27:46[SPEAKER_01]: you know that we can work on those connections with the second group you know I mean then you don't have to always put the back of quarterback in with the first group in order to do that you know I mean so just anytime to me like that's that's the thing it's not necessarily learning the plays or getting the reps is just building that connection with the guys he's ultimately going to be out there playing with.
- 28:05[SPEAKER_00]: I loved by the way, so Mike Zimmer, that was my first the Teddy Bridgewater years, my first year at NFL Network, and I remember talking to him shortly after the draft, and I was like, what do you think about taking Teddy Bridgewater and he said something to the effect of, well, I know the clock starts ticking now, and it was the most Mike Zimmer, like, you know, I think where it was like, this is exciting, but now I know, I'm in trouble if he doesn't play.
- 28:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you'd be a negative.
- 28:29[SPEAKER_01]: I don't believe you.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_00]: That was, it made me laugh, but let's get to Ty Simpson because first off, we have to all vet now what agencies were represented by whenever you talk about Ty, no, I'm kidding, with Tyson's job.
- 28:45[SPEAKER_00]: Do you see him as kind of that true number two foil in this class, or what's the gap you see from one to two and just tell us what you think about?
- 28:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think there's a decent sized gap between one and two.
- 28:58[SPEAKER_01]: But I do think that he is clearly the second guy.
- 29:02[SPEAKER_01]: The good with him is really, really good.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_01]: And then the bad is he's had some rough deals.
- 29:10[SPEAKER_01]: Now the thing with tie and the reason why some guys like him as much as they do is because he's an ass to do the most.
- 29:20[SPEAKER_01]: That's a true
- 29:22[SPEAKER_01]: passing offense.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_01]: Like they throw the ball first in that event and like I actually have some appreciation for that because not many people do that anymore.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_01]: That's why like if you go back to Michael Pinnicks, like that's the same offense, right?
- 29:35[SPEAKER_01]: So like you know and the game is on the quarterback shoulders at all times.
- 29:41[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 29:42[SPEAKER_01]: So you get a really true evaluation when you have guys like that and you look at like how well he played against Georgia.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and you're like, wow, you want this right now.
- 29:55[SPEAKER_01]: Again, guys get a play to this size.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I think a lot of that's like, oh, you guys gone, but you shoved the nausea six foot 200 pounds or two of six or whatever.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_01]: You know, but yeah, I think he's showing some athleticism.
- 30:09[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's like a true Like grip and rip gunsling or like and I think that's why you see so many like Tight window throws like I mean, there's the one camera who's grants where you know They're running the deep cross and the DB Is right underneath them and he throws exactly where and now you see some throws other in some other games where
- 30:28[SPEAKER_01]: you know, it's an interception or, you know, there's some throws in there, you're like, man, why did he decide to throw that ball?
- 30:34[SPEAKER_01]: And he's kind of trusting his read and he's letting it go.
- 30:38[SPEAKER_01]: You would rather have that and have to kind of like pull the governor back on a guy than someone that's like afraid to turn it loose in my opinion.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_01]: but the turnovers and the turnover worthy plays, I think, are an issue, you know what I mean?
- 30:54[SPEAKER_01]: But as far as, like, scheme wise, like, you know, they're running the past offense, I mean, they got everything, they got every concept, I mean, you see them do it and like,
- 31:04[SPEAKER_01]: they're throwing the ball like, you know, they're up by 14 in the second half and they're freaking an empty, like, rip it.
- 31:12[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's, that's just what they do and it's, it's great, you know what I mean?
- 31:16[SPEAKER_01]: And, and you get to see a lot of that and there's good and bad because of it, I think, you know, I don't fault them because I think he's going to be a first round pick, but like it would have been interesting to see how he would have played another year
- 31:33[SPEAKER_01]: seeing how he would have developed, does he cut down on the turnover worthy place?
- 31:38[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the one-year starter thing is real.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_01]: Like, that's real.
- 31:42[SPEAKER_01]: That doesn't mean you can't draft the guy, but guys that have only started for a year, like their success rate is lower, considerably.
- 31:51[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I don't know if you can find a lot of guy.
- 31:53[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I've heard the baseline, I want to dive into that with you, because I've heard the baseline is 25 starts, right?
- 31:58[SPEAKER_02]: Like a lot of teams work off of.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_02]: Like can you explain that because I like I think what it is and what I've turned from people over the years is like There's like a process of like okay like now you're new and you're getting in there and defenses are learning how to play you and then now they've got 10 games to tape on you and they have 15 games to tape on you so now they're making you play a different way and like it's just like it almost feels like
- 32:21[SPEAKER_02]: The more starts you have, the more you've, like, Brock Perty's a good example.
- 32:24[SPEAKER_02]: Like, he had to play that cat mouse game a lot, right?
- 32:27[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 32:28[SPEAKER_02]: You know, like, can you explain, like, why the volume of starts can be a really important thing when it comes to a quarterback's readiness to play in the process.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_01]: it's it's wraps you know I mean it's just that the reps the more things he's seen even though it's college football and not the NFL like it's still you know still eleven guys out there they're still the coverage structures are all relatively the same like you're you know I mean it's like you see something you you dock it as a as memory and then the next time you see it it's not a it's not a surprise you know I mean or like you know you try not to get full by the same same thing twice the other thing like
- 33:04[SPEAKER_01]: that is and maybe a little overlooked is like if a guy has over 25 certain like you can't come out to after third year right so like if a guy has 25 starts even though he's a junior like it means that he was the best guy at that school the whole time like clearly right so like set just in rule makes him a better player like mr. bisky not picking on mr. bisky just throwing out an
- 33:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, North Carolina and Mitch couldn't beat him out and Marcus Williams on drafted player like that and he and he was very successful, you know, as a college quarterback in North Carolina nothing bad about him.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just saying that Mitch Cherrisky ends up going and starts for a year and all of a sudden he's a second year picking the draft and.
- 33:50[SPEAKER_01]: He couldn't beat the other guy out flip flip the other side of that as like Trevor Lawrence Like Clemson was an undefeated team the guy's name Kelly whatever his name is I can picture him but and Yeah, I know you're talking about this guys.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_01]: And then we're picking the draft like we're not sitting in behind This quarterback even though he was like a two-year starter, you know, come in and come in into it.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_01]: You are so like
- 34:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one, it's a good one
- 34:34[SPEAKER_01]: He's a better player, you know, I mean, so they played him more, you know, I mean, like that to me is part of it that people don't necessarily talk about like that's the simplest answer, but the biggest thing to answer your question though to me is the experience and just the reps and the different that different looks and that's what the worry is with Mendoza, like yeah, he started more games, but like does he have the reps of the running the concepts over to get enough right and get like and that's what
- 34:59[SPEAKER_01]: kind of what we're saying.
- 35:00[SPEAKER_01]: But for whatever reason, though, like the correlation is real, the guys with the fewer starts have had less success.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_01]: And we talk about a couple of reasons, obviously.
- 35:11[SPEAKER_00]: I forgot to ask this woman does a cell kind of package it is a question about Mendoza and Ty Simpson too.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I don't know is it an evaluator do you hate the comp question and is that something that when you when you are delivering a report on someone like are you saying he can be kind of this version of x, y, or z an existing player or are you trying to avoid that altogether?
- 35:34[SPEAKER_00]: And if you're not, do you see someone in Ty Simpson or Mendoza that they remind you of at the NFL level?
- 35:40[SPEAKER_01]: I do try to avoid it to be honest, like, yeah, I try to, because everyone's different, and I don't want to like, lump somebody into a different, you know, a certain category.
- 35:51[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, some guys, it's like, some guys are, I mean, I'm trying to think of, like, an example, like, some guys are like so much like somebody else, that it's like hard not to make rights comparison.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 36:02[SPEAKER_01]: But I think when you make comparisons, I think you end up being doing a disservice to both players, but the person you're comparing them to, and the,
- 36:10[SPEAKER_01]: the person, the player himself, you know.
- 36:12[SPEAKER_02]: So like with Simpson, then like the one thing you hear, I've got two parts this question, but the first one is like your coaches kid and you always hear like about Simpson, coaches kid, coaches kid, coaches kid.
- 36:25[SPEAKER_02]: Can you see that watching him?
- 36:28[SPEAKER_02]: Can you see like his football IQ?
- 36:31[SPEAKER_02]: on the tape like does it really show up like that this guy grew up with it that he's got an ability to process everything to understand what's going on what a defense is trying to do to him what he's trying to accomplish offensively like can you legitimately see that watching him on tape
- 36:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think so.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_01]: I think you see him, you see him make decisions.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_01]: You see him make decisions quickly.
- 36:51[SPEAKER_01]: I think it kind of where I talk about before like he's going to turn the ball loose and that gets him in trouble sometimes, but like he sees something he makes decisions and ball gets you know turn loose and You know there's a couple plays really the defense wasn't necessarily I think where it was supposed to be and it
- 37:06[SPEAKER_01]: they fell into something, you know what I mean?
- 37:07[SPEAKER_01]: Because he trusted his process and, you know, the film study and everything like that.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_01]: But no, you see that.
- 37:14[SPEAKER_01]: And again, I wasn't, like, I'm not working for a team right now.
- 37:18[SPEAKER_01]: So I haven't been a part of the interviews or anything.
- 37:22[SPEAKER_01]: And that's why I don't have that side of it.
- 37:25[SPEAKER_01]: But just from what I've seen, like media interviews and stuff, it seems like that's how these wired.
- 37:29[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so the second part of that question is it does seem like midway through the year, the thing flipped on him a little bit, right?
- 37:36[SPEAKER_02]: Like where after 9 or 10 games, he started to get hit more, he got hurt.
- 37:41[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the run game sort of evaporated.
- 37:44[SPEAKER_02]: And like I remember hearing from a couple of people like the Brent Venables did something.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_02]: You know, the Oklahoma coach did something in that game that kind of exploited something that was never really fixed.
- 37:57[SPEAKER_02]: How do you view that?
- 37:59[SPEAKER_02]: Like you view that is like some of the things that he had to go through where it was like, all right, the run game's not here and I'm getting knocked around a bunch.
- 38:06[SPEAKER_02]: Like obviously like that led to his play, the climbing a little bit.
- 38:09[SPEAKER_02]: But could you even take a positive from that?
- 38:11[SPEAKER_02]: And now I've seen them in some adverse situations where he had to kind of fight through.
- 38:15[SPEAKER_02]: And what did you see towards the end of the year with him?
- 38:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think there was a little bit of research.
- 38:20[SPEAKER_01]: I think, we talked about the George game being his best game.
- 38:23[SPEAKER_01]: I think he did have ability to fight through the adversity as the season went on.
- 38:27[SPEAKER_01]: I think a lot of it was being hurt, taking the hits.
- 38:31[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that wears on people again.
- 38:34[SPEAKER_01]: the fact that the game was always on his shoulders like whether you know there wasn't a lack of the run there was a lack of a run game but also just they decided to play you know play through him all the time which was good because you got the considercity you can see the evaluation I think that's kind of goes back to what I've seen too like how he was like it would have been really cool to see him come back because now you like really see you know how he how he responded you know
- 39:04[SPEAKER_01]: Whether you got knocked out of the game or they pulled them and put the other guy in.
- 39:07[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, you know, whatever happened.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, the that part of it didn't in well, but they did, they played pretty well against Oklahoma.
- 39:15[SPEAKER_01]: The game before that in the college floor playoff, which was a good bounce by game for him.
- 39:20[SPEAKER_01]: Based on what you're talking about with the Brett Venerable stuff and the different pressures and, you know, things that they brought to the table there.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, I think he's got a chance to be a good player.
- 39:30[SPEAKER_01]: How good?
- 39:31[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not necessarily sure.
- 39:35[SPEAKER_01]: you know but you do like you like his ability to see the field turn the ball loose and you like that the the evidence that you have of him running NFL type scheme.
- 39:45[SPEAKER_00]: You think the venibals thing was that he just learned all their signals?
- 39:48[SPEAKER_00]: That was the, yeah.
- 39:49[SPEAKER_00]: But he's like the best, isn't he like that?
- 39:52[SPEAKER_01]: Is he really out of, I don't know that.
- 39:53[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he's apparently like, I'm a stat, yeah, yeah.
- 39:56[SPEAKER_01]: No, I'm not trying to know this.
- 39:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm sure they got that.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_01]: But I mean, the signals, but they got the coach to quarterback now.
- 40:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know what I mean?
- 40:06[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 40:06[SPEAKER_01]: I just, I think he just has the exotic pressure thing.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_01]: I think when you're throwing the ball all the time, like, and you're always in past pro, and people are blissful at the time,
- 40:13[SPEAKER_01]: you're going to get some free hitters, like he got some hits, you know, and whatever, they shut them down, like, do you think, do you think Samson can be a long term starter for somebody?
- 40:24[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I think in the right in the right situation, I think he can be, um, I don't think he's ever going to be.
- 40:31[SPEAKER_01]: You know, a top 10 guy in the league, but I think he's got, you know, if you put a good team around them, I think you can be in that, you know, that, you know, the teens, you know, does he belong in like a shenanow offense, then?
- 40:43[SPEAKER_02]: What do you say?
- 40:44[SPEAKER_01]: Like, well, if you had an outage asking him, everyone.
- 40:47[SPEAKER_01]: That's a captain.
- 40:48[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 40:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 40:49[SPEAKER_01]: So like, I mean, everyone.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_01]: Um, no, I don't, I don't know if you can like, if you need like, Pigeon home in this scheme, you know, I mean, I think that like,
- 40:59[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think he's a kind of daft and play the different schemes.
- 41:02[SPEAKER_01]: But I think, yeah, I think that you'd be good in that offense.
- 41:05[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, because that's the only reason I ask, because I didn't want to put the comp on you, but the comp I've heard for him is Brock Perti.
- 41:10[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, and I've seen that.
- 41:12[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, and again, winded, like, that's where that's why I kind of dislike these, or I dislike the comps.
- 41:18[SPEAKER_01]: And that's, like, because like, when Brock Perti was a last pick in the draft, and we're talking about this guy being a first-row pick.
- 41:25[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I mean, so like, you know, like that's where it's like, okay, Brock pretty coming out or like Brock pretty, yeah, yeah, which I know you mean that, but like, you know what I'm saying, like best off of Brock pretty is like,
- 41:41[SPEAKER_01]: physical traits and the, you know, he started four years.
- 41:45[SPEAKER_01]: He probably would have been like a fourth round pick if he came out like out there, or you know, fifth round, but whatever he's junior, like he's actually one of those guys like the more and we'll, and there's some other guys like this that we'll talk about later, um, that for this draft, that like sometimes the more the more draft you tape you have, like the more you get picked apart too, you know, in like, um, and I think that happened to rock pretty.
- 42:05[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's a perfect segue to our next guy who's Garrett Nussmire and it's interesting, right?
- 42:09[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, six, two and up until the senior year, the 20, 25 year yards per game, touchdown passes, touchdown percentage, quarterback rating, everything was on a steady descent to the point where I thought, you know, at least at this point last year, we were talking about him being a potential top three pick, right, and top five pick.
- 42:32[SPEAKER_00]: where do you think that changed or, you know, was it, do you think just a little bit early?
- 42:37[SPEAKER_00]: I think on everybody's part, I don't know, what's just your general takeaway on, on Garrett, Nussmire, after watching him play?
- 42:43[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, I'm a fan of his, I've known him for a while, you know, his dad obviously being the office corner at the Saints in the long time quarterback coach, I did some work like a long time ago in the summer, like the quarterback collective and
- 42:56[SPEAKER_01]: Was at a camp and he was I think he was going into his junior year at the time But like you see like he's just a natural quarterback like natural leadership got a lot of like good like energy to them Really enjoyed being around them and they kind of followed him like he was in like a legit quarterback competition with Jay and Daniels and Rcj and beat him out and won the high trophy and but
- 43:20[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I remember people be like, oh, you know, there's a group of people that thought Nus should have played.
- 43:26[SPEAKER_01]: And then took over and like you said, like, has had a lot of success.
- 43:30[SPEAKER_01]: And then this season for them, for whatever reason, like it just didn't, it kind of one of those things that kind of spiraled, you know, and it didn't end up.
- 43:40[SPEAKER_01]: going well for him, obviously the coach, you know, all those things and that's a fact, you know, he was, he battled through some injuries as well.
- 43:53[SPEAKER_01]: And I do think like he's one of the two guys I would follow in the category of this, they like.
- 44:00[SPEAKER_01]: the he's getting picked apart based off of the amount of tape he has, you know, yeah, I think like, I think he's a guy that like his floor is probably going to be like a 10-year backup in this league, you know what I mean?
- 44:14[SPEAKER_01]: Like, you know, talk about coach's kid,
- 44:18[SPEAKER_01]: But, like, understands football, understands offense.
- 44:21[SPEAKER_01]: Like, knows where to go with the ball.
- 44:23[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think his issue is issues on tables where he tried to do too much.
- 44:28[SPEAKER_01]: He held on the ball, took some bad sacks.
- 44:32[SPEAKER_01]: You know, some turnovers, those types of things.
- 44:34[SPEAKER_01]: But, I think,
- 44:36[SPEAKER_01]: I think you can get in the situation where he's not gonna press and he just runs the offense that he can be very successful whether it is as a long-term backup or like a low-end starter.
- 44:46[SPEAKER_01]: I don't see him very far behind.
- 44:49[SPEAKER_01]: Ty, yeah, steps in, you know what I mean?
- 44:52[SPEAKER_02]: I think you say it's like this.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, sir between Simpson and Nussmire, then it is between Mendoza and Simpson.
- 44:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 44:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_01]: I would fall, I would put them in the same bucket though
- 45:06[SPEAKER_01]: the intangibles and the, like football IQ is as higher strength to them than necessary their physical ability, you know what I mean?
- 45:18[SPEAKER_01]: For both those guys, that's where like, you know, I remember last year, early, like, Nuss had a really good game, I think one of the first games everyone's like, you know, now he's like, supposed to be the number one pick in the draft and like, I remember having a conversation with my dad about it and being like,
- 45:33[SPEAKER_01]: This guy's really not the first pick in the draft.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 45:35[SPEAKER_01]: Like he's just not like, yeah, his his makeup.
- 45:38[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 45:38[SPEAKER_01]: And then again, I'm not trying to be next right, but you're saying the traits on the right, but just the right, you know, the first pick in the draft time.
- 45:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 45:47[SPEAKER_01]: Even like going back to, you know, Baker like when Baker was the first pick in the draft, like,
- 45:51[SPEAKER_01]: He had the harm strength and the unbelievable accuracy like the athleticism and then but then the I remember talking about these things like basically accuracy was like nothing you ever seen.
- 46:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah it was great yeah it was outstanding on tape and you know and that's what got him to that point obviously to be the number one overall pick and you know again picked over guys that are were better physically you know what I mean obviously with Josh Allen and Lamar and those guys but
- 46:18[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, I mean, I think that those two guys kind of fit in a category together and like I just I think Simpsons got a little bit more the the little more ability little more playmaker to them maybe this is then then that's why I put him just thought yeah, I don't know.
- 46:33[SPEAKER_01]: So how do you divorce?
- 46:35[SPEAKER_02]: Like because I assume this is like a huge part of the evaluation with a guy like this who played better the year before, right?
- 46:41[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, how do you when you're looking at it?
- 46:44[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I'm assuming part of it would be having the opportunity to sit down with him and talk with him through it like when you were with a team, but like how do you divorce the This was just a worse situation versus like he didn't he is on him too.
- 46:57[SPEAKER_02]: You know what I mean like how like was that could you see those pieces to the puzzle and watching him?
- 47:02[SPEAKER_01]: No, I mean, I think the truth is always somewhere in the middle, too, right?
- 47:05[SPEAKER_01]: Like, okay, this is a bad situation, and then you didn't handle the bad situation very well.
- 47:11[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, you know, like, you know, you made a bad situation worse or whatever.
- 47:17[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's why that's where you're getting, that's why he's getting knocked out a little bit.
- 47:23[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 47:23[SPEAKER_01]: And that's where, you know, he's not thought of as a firm pick necessarily.
- 47:28[SPEAKER_01]: Again, we don't know what's going to actually happen, but just based off what people are saying.
- 47:32[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that like you said like talking to them as part of it, but just watch the tape too like okay if a guy came free of the like and the guy came free on a pressure do you like step on the pocket and take a sack for two yards or do you like try to spin out of it when you know maybe that's not your deal and all of a sudden it's like an 11 yard sack phone ball because you're a bad boss here you know I mean like
- 47:59[SPEAKER_01]: So I think, or like, okay, the pocket's collapsing on you, like, do you just throw it and you throw it right through a defect?
- 48:05[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean, like, those types of things, Giron's a wrong route, like how do you react?
- 48:10[SPEAKER_01]: Take it, you know, all those types of things, and again, a lot of it is harder when you can't necessarily have those conversations.
- 48:17[SPEAKER_01]: with the with the player but like you can see a lot of it off of tape.
- 48:21[SPEAKER_00]: Do you subscribe to mean a lot was made I think about Sean Peyton coming out and saying like that was basically the formula behind him picking Bonyx was turnover worthy plays or disaster worthy plays and that was basically the key component of whatever statistical measure he used to pick Bonyx.
- 48:39[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I've heard like Sean Sean said to me like sat a sack as a quarterback stat.
- 48:45[SPEAKER_01]: it's absolutely true.
- 48:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I'm just curious from your perspective.
- 48:50[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, is that is that a curable ailment or are some guys just, you know, kind of magnetic in terms of like when something goes wrong, they're going to almost run into danger or put themselves in a bad spot.
- 49:03[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I think a lot of times it's, I think it's a case by case situation.
- 49:09[SPEAKER_01]: I think it is curable like a lot of times like, um, and I think with, in that's this case, I think a lot of it was like trying to do too much.
- 49:17[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 49:17[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of guys like put more on their plate than they need to do or like, you know,
- 49:21[SPEAKER_01]: try to like go beyond what their capabilities are.
- 49:25[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 49:26[SPEAKER_01]: And a lot of times, like as a competitor, like you got to make this smart play even though, you know, sometimes it's hard to do that.
- 49:34[SPEAKER_01]: You know, now, somebody else can't get out of their own way.
- 49:36[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 49:37[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of guys, like the sack part of it,
- 49:39[SPEAKER_01]: Um a lot of times like the guys that get sacked a lot are just the guys that can't see like they can't see process exactly so they end up holding on to the ball and That'll kill you in the NFL and it shows up in college for Paul too, and that's where like a lot of times like a guy's won't even take a lot of sacks but like
- 49:56[SPEAKER_01]: If you watch a quarterback and like, you know, he always seems like he's a hitch to later, the ball's not getting there right out of the break, like that you had to add that to evaluation process, too, because that's something that maybe he doesn't catch up with the college football, but it will, as you get to the next level, you know?
- 50:12[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 50:14[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 50:15[SPEAKER_02]: Why don't we go to Drew Aller now and this one's really interesting to me.
- 50:18[SPEAKER_02]: I guess there are some similarities with Aller and Nussmire and that they both came into the year with high expectations.
- 50:27[SPEAKER_02]: They both at least flashed the ability to be a high draft pick, and then in both cases coaches fired in mid-season kind of disaster hits.
- 50:39[SPEAKER_02]: This is a guy who was a three-year starter at Penn State, highly recruited, kid that they were able to get out of Ohio.
- 50:48[SPEAKER_02]: And like, I think it feels to me a little Scott, like when I talk to people about him, it's either you don't like him at all, or you look at him and you say,
- 50:58[SPEAKER_02]: This guy was playing in an offense that wasn't a fit for him.
- 51:03[SPEAKER_02]: And I just, you know, it just feels like maybe, this is like the opposite in us.
- 51:09[SPEAKER_02]: And in certain ways, it's like, not a smile for the reasons they said.
- 51:12[SPEAKER_02]: And then in other ways, it's like almost like, this is a guy who's just chasing the ceiling with, right?
- 51:17[SPEAKER_02]: Like another floor might be really low too.
- 51:19[SPEAKER_02]: But like there's, there's there may be some high end potential here that still is untapped.
- 51:26[SPEAKER_01]: No, I think you're 100% right.
- 51:27[SPEAKER_01]: I think the similar's with Nussmire are that if they come out last year, I think they both would have gotten picked higher than where they're going to get picked this year.
- 51:40[SPEAKER_01]: But for different reasons, I think.
- 51:42[SPEAKER_01]: I think Alar, he's a guy that
- 51:47[SPEAKER_01]: physically like physically you know the size the athleticism like that you would want to take a chance on I think what hurt him this past season is like He didn't look like he necessarily got any better from one year to the next and in some cases like I think the team got worse I think he lost the tight end to throw the ball to you Yeah, and they've struggled You know they've struggled for whatever reason at the receiver position
- 52:15[SPEAKER_01]: They're, you know, of getting, you know, I mean, they, like, through the wall to tie their worn all the time and, you know, I think that had an impact on it as well.
- 52:25[SPEAKER_01]: Um, used to not see that step from one year to the next of, you know, I'm not, um, I see the physical traits.
- 52:33[SPEAKER_01]: I think, um, I don't, I wasn't necessarily a fan of the offense, like it's not a lot to see.
- 52:38[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think a lot of it, like, um,
- 52:42[SPEAKER_01]: It's a different offense than Indiana, but it's more of a, it's more of a college style offense, you know, and a lot of movement and Belgium.
- 52:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, a lot of movement, RPOs, you know, and the thing with him, like, as you, when you compare it to, I mean, those like you didn't see the mastery of it with him, then you did of, of, with, and those, and like you said, like, does that mean it was a bad fit for maybe?
- 53:06[SPEAKER_01]: Like, is it, would he be better?
- 53:07[SPEAKER_01]: as an under center hard play action.
- 53:09[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I don't know.
- 53:11[SPEAKER_01]: Someone's gonna think that and they're gonna take a chance on them.
- 53:15[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think they're gonna, you know, and then you're gonna pick them in the third, fourth round and think of them as a backup or maybe even a guy that, you know, you quote unquote red shirt that's on your 53 that's your emergency third, you know, that you hope that you hope doesn't play, you know, and then you kind of see what he can become.
- 53:36[SPEAKER_01]: through the off-season isn't training camp, get through a whole season, and then another off-season training camp, and then see if he can develop and do a backup, and then potentially be a starter.
- 53:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I just thought there was some accuracy issues.
- 53:50[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, there's a lot, and again, him is probably the hardest one for me to do without being able to spend time with them, or like have a conversation.
- 54:00[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 54:01[SPEAKER_01]: How do you say that?
- 54:02[SPEAKER_01]: Just because of, you know, or like, see them in the workout, just because of the, you know, the offense, maybe the lack of success or the, how it kind of, how we had to deal with the adversity.
- 54:13[SPEAKER_01]: Now, we go back to the other year, like, and there's some turnover worthy plays as well.
- 54:17[SPEAKER_01]: So just like having those conversations.
- 54:20[SPEAKER_01]: Like, what did you see here, like, that sort of story?
- 54:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly, or like, you know, explained to me, I don't have a lot of familiarity with their offense either.
- 54:28[SPEAKER_01]: So like, what were your rules?
- 54:30[SPEAKER_01]: What were your, you know, what you coach to do?
- 54:32[SPEAKER_01]: Those, that type of thing.
- 54:33[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, I'm one of the worst, like, fans of the NFL draft because, like, I'll sit here and say, like, I think, like, four years ago,
- 54:41[SPEAKER_00]: Why can't Kellen Monde be like an NFL starter, you know, and like all this kind of stuff, you fall over the guy on college tape and then you just you you fantasize about it in your head and you think like, oh, someone will be able to make this work, but in your mind, like someone like a lot, you know, and again, this is probably painting with too broad of a brush, but do you remember?
- 55:00[SPEAKER_00]: like a guy with incredible tools that's like a 4th to 7th round or 3rd to 7th round pick that kind of you know if it took him some time to get it and he finally got it he could be in a fell starter like is that does that person exist or do we kind of just like feel ourselves into thinking that
- 55:15[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you fully, you fully, you fully, you fully, you fully yourself like that.
- 55:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 55:19[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Dak Prescott, I mean, but Dak is like, like, Dak would be the worst.
- 55:23[SPEAKER_02]: Dak is an excellent college quarter.
- 55:25[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that's, that's what I'm saying.
- 55:27[SPEAKER_01]: Like, Dak is a guy that like, yeah, he was drafted in the fourth round, but like he was also like,
- 55:33[SPEAKER_01]: He was a quarterback at Mississippi State.
- 55:35[SPEAKER_01]: They started a million games and it for like a five week stretch the middle of season They were the number one team in the country at Mississippi State.
- 55:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so like, you know, but like that's a that's a mid-round quarterback that like has The physical skills, but he also had
- 55:50[SPEAKER_01]: He's also like the one of the toughest dudes that and everyone knew that and he and he like had the success you know, I mean, like You know, how much you have to guard against your pride in that though you know what I mean like as a coach I would think like there's always like that like temptation like oh man like look at it like I think
- 56:12[SPEAKER_02]: I think, I think I had a conversation with you once, Scott, where you said, this was like a line I love.
- 56:18[SPEAKER_02]: I think it might have been from you, maybe with somebody else, but like you said about a quarter back.
- 56:25[SPEAKER_02]: you see everything you need to see, it just takes you a lot of tape to get there.
- 56:29[SPEAKER_02]: You know what I mean?
- 56:30[SPEAKER_02]: Like, it was interesting because it kind of informed me when I heard that line that like, you could turn on YouTube and watch a five minute, like I could watch a five minute reel of somebody, oh my god, he looks great.
- 56:44[SPEAKER_02]: But then that's cutting out like a lot of what it took to get there.
- 56:47[SPEAKER_02]: you know, correct.
- 56:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 56:49[SPEAKER_02]: How much do you have to like defend against your own pride in that where it's like, I can work with that.
- 56:53[SPEAKER_02]: You know what I mean?
- 56:53[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 56:54[SPEAKER_02]: I can fix him versus like he was probably like getting good coaching and college too and just it didn't work.
- 57:00[SPEAKER_02]: You know what I mean?
- 57:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 57:02[SPEAKER_01]: I think that, um, I think there's a lot of that.
- 57:05[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I think there's definitely a lot of that, like, uh, and I think you got to just be smart with what like what it is like, yeah, through a lot for example, like, okay, if you're going to, if you're going to, if you're going to pick him, like, okay, throwing out like a hypothetical, like, what if like buffalo picked them in like the fifth round and like they got Josh.
- 57:24[SPEAKER_01]: And then they got Kyle Allen who's like a solid, you know, two.
- 57:28[SPEAKER_01]: He's a backup, but like they don't want Kyle to be the backup for the next five years Like they want to maybe like now they get this guy for a year and then he, you know, see what he can develop and there's not like a lot of like
- 57:39[SPEAKER_01]: a lot of pressure now will somebody draft him higher than that then like a team like that is maybe comfortable draft thing and then now all of a sudden that's where you get into the issue like okay this guy you know drew a lot of they picked them in the second round because of his traits and that's like well all of a sudden you start the season you're two and four and you're like well we need to play this guy you know I mean like why do we draft of you know I mean and now like you dereal yourself and the player
- 58:05[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 58:06[SPEAKER_01]: So I think you just got to be honest with the evaluation of where he is and And know like the higher you pick them the more you're going to be have pressure to get him out there when you know adversity, you know strikes.
- 58:21[SPEAKER_00]: So we got two more on the board and just kind of, I want you to tell me kind of, we've Carson Beckham, we have Cole Payton back destroyed my Notre Dame's chance of going to a national championship.
- 58:33[SPEAKER_00]: So we can just skip him altogether if we want to.
- 58:35[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's true.
- 58:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think this was our year.
- 58:37[SPEAKER_00]: And also, you know, because we lose the first round, you know, whatever, whatever.
- 58:42[SPEAKER_00]: But either of those two guys, you know, I guess of the two, do you see any pro upside to either of the two of those?
- 58:49[SPEAKER_00]: Do you think they're two of the more interesting players in the back end of that draft that they have some uniqueness to them?
- 58:55[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what stands out to you with the two of them.
- 58:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so I personally like Carson Beck more than Drew Alar.
- 59:02[SPEAKER_01]: I would take him over him.
- 59:06[SPEAKER_01]: Again, not doing any interviews like not talking to them just based off of the film.
- 59:10[SPEAKER_01]: I think Carson Beck is like a good combination of like what we're talking about with Nussmire and Drew Alar.
- 59:20[SPEAKER_01]: He started it's like it's it's actually because like people were talking about him being the number one overall pick right and then He had that really bad your Georgia where he just threw an interception every game You know, I mean and and then got hurt and they put the other guy in and like transfers to Miami
- 59:37[SPEAKER_01]: And I kind of like, you know, just from watching on TV, I was kind of like this guy, you know, I wasn't the biggest fan, like, and then he really played well last year, you know, he really played well and you talk about like responding from adversity, like we're talking about with Tyson's and like you actually got to see it with this guy of basically everyone, you know, I know my Amy gave him a lot of money and they wanted him or whatever, but still like,
- 1:00:00[SPEAKER_01]: George didn't want him anymore, like it's a, you know, his whole life, he's, but I'm sure he's been told how good he is, and now all of a sudden, like, you've got to, you know, you had, face him adversity, went to a new school, all the, you know, whatever the off the field stuff was that people are giving him a hard time, and then bounce him back and performing, like against good football teams, you know, the Louisville game was a little bit.
- 1:00:23[SPEAKER_01]: troubling with the foreign receptions and and they ended up losing that game um that was kind of like the Georgia Carson Beck kind of creeping back in obviously the interception then the losing at the end of the international championship game was a tough play and there's going to be some plays like that but like you know those are some good defenses obviously talked about Ohio State talk about Notre Dame earlier in the season and and he put some good stuff on tape
- 1:00:49[SPEAKER_01]: from kind of dealing with some negativity.
- 1:00:52[SPEAKER_01]: So I think there's, and he guys have the, kind of the prototypical size and everything that's.
- 1:00:57[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that there's, there's a little bit of intrigue or something that something to be said for that type of player.
- 1:01:05[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's a guy too that like could probably come in and be your number two right away because he started over 40 games.
- 1:01:13[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 1:01:13[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think you'd have a pretty good comfort level with him doing that and then just kind of, you know, see where see where it goes from there, but but I think that I think he's a little bit of an intriguing intriguing prospect.
- 1:01:26[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:01:27[SPEAKER_01]: I haven't talked to a lot of people, but I'm interested to see kind of where he where he goes because he could because what happens is and you guys know like really if
- 1:01:36[SPEAKER_01]: If you're not picking a quarterback that you think is going to be your starter, like that's where like the guys go off the board in the first round, right?
- 1:01:42[SPEAKER_01]: And then every once in a while you get a second round pick, but then after that normally they don't get picked to like fourth or fifth because every one wants to get a second or third round player that's going to play out there for 17 games.
- 1:01:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:01:53[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 1:01:54[SPEAKER_01]: And so, um,
- 1:01:57[SPEAKER_01]: you know, those those those picks are so valuable.
- 1:01:59[SPEAKER_01]: You're picking starters like day one starters at every other position other than quarterback really or at least, you know, if you're pick a defensive end, like he's going to play, you know, 30 snaps again.
- 1:02:11[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I mean, like if you guys are long-term starter at that position, you're going to take him in the first round.
- 1:02:16[SPEAKER_02]: If you don't, you won't take him in the second or third.
- 1:02:19[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 1:02:19[SPEAKER_01]: No, and ever once a while, like you'll, you know, a guy dropped to the second and they'll get picked because the team at first run great on them and they tried to trade up to 32 because they wanted to get the fifth year option, but they couldn't get it done and then they had to pick it on it, you know, whatever 41.
- 1:02:34[SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, but that's that's where, you know, I think they'll be interesting, like, is there going to be two picked for two, two quarterback's picked in the first round probably.
- 1:02:43[SPEAKER_01]: And then after that, like one is the next guy go and who is it going to be and I think there's going to be some.
- 1:02:50[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be interesting to see how that plays out.
- 1:02:52[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 1:02:54[SPEAKER_02]: Colpays are interesting to just the lineage of North Dakota State quarterbacks now with.
- 1:02:58[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, with Carson Wands and Easton stick and trail ants and obviously the two first rounders didn't live up to expectations in the long run.
- 1:03:09[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, what do you see with Colpate?
- 1:03:12[SPEAKER_02]: And because I know he's sort of someone that's
- 1:03:15[SPEAKER_02]: I'd say picked up some steam, it's just like a day three-dark horse, you know.
- 1:03:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, for sure.
- 1:03:19[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's what he is.
- 1:03:21[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's a good athlete.
- 1:03:23[SPEAKER_01]: You know, he probably, his athletic times are probably better than like what he showed.
- 1:03:29[SPEAKER_01]: Like his kind of a build-up speed runner.
- 1:03:32[SPEAKER_01]: So you don't, you know, it's not like he's got a lot of like twitch, you know, moving in the pocket.
- 1:03:38[SPEAKER_01]: You know, so I don't, I think he's just said, okay,
- 1:03:45[SPEAKER_01]: Like I didn't do this with him, but like everyone always talks about left-handed quarterbacks mechanics being bad and then like, you know, someone was watching, did you ever see the reverse angle to a thing?
- 1:03:57[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so the reverse angle, I always thought like to a, I don't know, like everybody, like everybody's saying he's got a good delivery.
- 1:04:04[SPEAKER_02]: It looks long to me and then they did the reverse and he saw what he would look like as a writing and I'm like, oh my god.
- 1:04:08[SPEAKER_01]: like I'm like it looks normal yeah and that's where like same thing with pennies like they did the same thing of pennies and everyone you know so you know I don't know but I do think it's a little long with the delivery and and and I think you know so I think he's truly a project you know I'm not sure if he's ever going to be good enough to be a true contributor just because I'm not sure how good of a passory is that's that's kind of my you know my fall back on that
- 1:04:35[SPEAKER_00]: I like how the deeper you get and this is like any draft analyst or any GM.
- 1:04:39[SPEAKER_00]: It's like the further down you get like the more it sounds like my high school football coach trying to talk about like me, you know, it's just like we're not really sure what he does or like we're to put him, but like, you know, he works hard and like, you know, they're running around, you know, but yeah, no, I mean, I think this is
- 1:04:56[SPEAKER_00]: it's hard to square a class like this with something like next year or the year after that.
- 1:05:03[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the last question I'm going to ask you on this, Scott is like,
- 1:05:07[SPEAKER_00]: How much does what's coming potentially impact what is in the now?
- 1:05:13[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, and how do you calibrate that as a coach?
- 1:05:16[SPEAKER_00]: Like, let's say you're coming in with the Raiders or you're a first year staff.
- 1:05:20[SPEAKER_00]: You know, you're gonna at least have two years of runway to do this.
- 1:05:23[SPEAKER_00]: How much is that?
- 1:05:24[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 1:05:28[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 1:05:28[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 1:05:29[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 1:05:30[UNKNOWN]: I don't know.
- 1:05:30[UNKNOWN]: I don't know.
- 1:05:30[SPEAKER_00]: not anymore.
- 1:05:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's true.
- 1:05:32[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 1:05:33[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:05:33[SPEAKER_02]: Well, you hit it right on the nose.
- 1:05:38[SPEAKER_00]: But how much does what's coming impact, you know, kind of what you're doing in real time there?
- 1:05:43[SPEAKER_01]: So I, I'll just be 100% honest with you for my experience, like you're I'm assuming you're talking about like the 27 draft and now everyone says how good it how good it's going to be last year everyone said how good this quarterback draft is going to be fair to you know I mean he's going to be arch Arch Manu is going to be a number of pick and drew a lot was going to be the number two pick and you know I mean like
- 1:06:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and that's my research.
- 1:06:05[SPEAKER_01]: So like it all.
- 1:06:07[SPEAKER_01]: It's a year to your thing.
- 1:06:08[SPEAKER_01]: I have never in my coaching career talked about next year's draft in an actual like meeting talking about the upcoming draft.
- 1:06:18[SPEAKER_01]: Like we never.
- 1:06:19[SPEAKER_01]: I never talked about that now.
- 1:06:22[SPEAKER_01]: Did the personnel guys in there more closed or meeting that the where there was a GM in the head of call scouting in there together the two of them or with the head coach today talk about that.
- 1:06:33[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know probably when when we were in.
- 1:06:37[SPEAKER_01]: When we were in Cleveland in 2013, that was the 2013 draft, which is terrible.
- 1:06:44[SPEAKER_01]: And we had the six-pick of the draft that we drafted, Arbor Kivius Mingo, and like, you know, the tackle from
- 1:06:53[SPEAKER_01]: Central Michigan was in there weren't picking the draft.
- 1:06:55[SPEAKER_01]: Air fish.
- 1:06:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:58[SPEAKER_02]: And then the Chino Smith craft, EJ Angel, map Barkley, right?
- 1:07:03[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
- 1:07:04[SPEAKER_01]: EJ was the first quarterback picked up off a little like 16 or something like that.
- 1:07:10[SPEAKER_01]: But anyways, so that draft wasn't thought of to be very good, and we traded
- 1:07:17[SPEAKER_01]: I think we traded our fourth brown pick for a next year's third and then we traded our fifth brown pick for a next year's fourth.
- 1:07:27[SPEAKER_01]: So like Joe Banner and like Michael and Barty, like I'm sure they were like this draft isn't very good.
- 1:07:34[SPEAKER_01]: let's kick it down the line, we can get free agents that we like just as much as these guys that we could pick there.
- 1:07:41[SPEAKER_01]: Whatever, I don't know, we all got fired after that year.
- 1:07:44[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't know what happened.
- 1:07:46[SPEAKER_01]: And guess who I'll end Joe Banner, Michael Marty, they got fired too.
- 1:07:49[SPEAKER_01]: So they didn't even get the pick in that next year's draft.
- 1:07:52[SPEAKER_01]: So to me, it's such a year to your deal.
- 1:07:57[SPEAKER_01]: Nowadays, these kids, I think we got to like,
- 1:08:04[SPEAKER_01]: The draft, they're so many guys that are still in school because they're getting the NIM money.
- 1:08:10[SPEAKER_01]: So they're not coming out.
- 1:08:12[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I don't know the numbers, but I know the underclassment has gone down immensely.
- 1:08:19[SPEAKER_01]: It was like going up every single year and then with NIM, it's crashed, you know, and I think that's where a lot of the town.
- 1:08:26[SPEAKER_01]: So like some of these guys, they might not even, like Trinidad, where would people support it?
- 1:08:34[SPEAKER_01]: Um, he's gonna get a ninth year.
- 1:08:36[SPEAKER_00]: So don't worry.
- 1:08:37[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I mean, people do, right?
- 1:08:40[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, and, and there's no rules like any time someone fights something they win.
- 1:08:46[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, I mean, so like, you know, these guys, so I think that's part of it.
- 1:08:51[SPEAKER_01]: I like who knows.
- 1:08:52[SPEAKER_01]: And again, like, I think you just evaluate what it is now.
- 1:08:57[SPEAKER_01]: I get like, but with what that being said, like you get in those, those later round picks, like, if there's a, if there's a player that you don't think is worth, if you're going to draft, and you don't think that this guy's worth that, or is there somebody you want?
- 1:09:11[SPEAKER_01]: You want to trade back and pick up another pick for the, for next year, like, I'm sure there is some conversations that have, like, as far as from a coach, like we, we never, I never talked about that.
- 1:09:22[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we are so worried about, you know, just being as good as we possibly could that year.
- 1:09:26[SPEAKER_02]: Outside Bill on this, like, I think one of the first times me and me and Scott hung out was, and I'm thinking about the drill, or thing again, and like how it doesn't happen that often that the big tools guy comes out, right?
- 1:09:39[SPEAKER_02]: Or, uh, my stuff working out, like late late in the draft, like let's get a fire on him guy.
- 1:09:45[SPEAKER_02]: And so, um,
- 1:09:47[SPEAKER_02]: I think me and Scott, I remember like my wife was pregnant my first was Scott wound up being one of the first people I told about that because I wasn't supposed to tell anybody yet.
- 1:09:51[SPEAKER_02]: My son's birthday is my oldest son's birthday is today.
- 1:09:52[SPEAKER_02]: There you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you go, there you
- 1:10:05[SPEAKER_02]: Well, we were in in Baton Rouge and that was the Pro Day.
- 1:10:10[SPEAKER_02]: I was covering the Pro Day.
- 1:10:11[SPEAKER_02]: It was Odelle Beckham.
- 1:10:12[SPEAKER_02]: It was Jarvis Landry and the quarterback of that team was another one of these guys.
- 1:10:18[SPEAKER_02]: We're always like, man, if he ever puts it all together and that was Zach Baton Murder.
- 1:10:23[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:10:24[SPEAKER_01]: All the matches.
- 1:10:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:10:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:10:26[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:10:26[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:10:27[SPEAKER_02]: So that ties it all together there that like that was like the guy that like if I remember right It's a big time recruit coming out and everybody's like man like if this this kid like if he just puts it all together It's it's really gonna happen.
- 1:10:40[SPEAKER_02]: I think three years later is Neil Ryan mallet too.
- 1:10:42[SPEAKER_02]: Remember Ryan mallet
- 1:10:44[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah, all right, P, right now.
- 1:10:46[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that's right.
- 1:10:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:49[SPEAKER_00]: He was another one of my draft crushes, where I was like, why can't anybody make Ryan Malatt work?
- 1:10:54[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, my God.
- 1:10:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that was very, really.
- 1:10:56[SPEAKER_01]: I need to be betrayed.
- 1:10:57[SPEAKER_01]: They broke up.
- 1:10:58[SPEAKER_01]: There was a lot of, there was more, there was more to the right amount of Ryan Malatt thing, because he was actually incredibly successful in college.
- 1:11:05[SPEAKER_01]: Like they went to the freaking church and almost beat Ohio State.
- 1:11:09[SPEAKER_00]: there he was I mean there was there was more to that story and for sure yeah well Scott I mean we can't thank you enough like we said normal this is just us you happen so anybody that can come in and educate us and educate our listeners I mean everyone's gonna be thrilled with it so we appreciate your time your knowledge for looking at these guys for us I feel ready for the draft now.
- 1:11:30[SPEAKER_00]: This is like I know it's bad to say like 10 days out.
- 1:11:33[SPEAKER_00]: We aren't full of it anymore, Connor.
- 1:11:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah
- 1:11:35[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 1:11:37[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 1:11:37[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 1:11:38[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 1:11:39[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 1:11:40[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 1:11:42[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:11:43[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:11:43[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:11:44[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:11:45[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:11:46[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:11:48[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:11:50[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:11:50[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:11:51[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:11:52[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:11:52[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:11:53[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:11:53[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:11:55[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:11:57[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:11:58[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:11:59[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:12:00[SPEAKER_01]: it's kind of up in the air like who where guys are going to fall and I think you're going to see some some trades and you know what what what teams are what teams are looking for and it may be totally different.
- 1:12:13[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's going to be totally different than whatever the consensus is and there's not a lot of consensus right now so it'll be fun.
- 1:12:19[SPEAKER_01]: Be fun for me to watch it at my house as a
- 1:12:23[SPEAKER_01]: As a fan, I normally eat a bunch at the facility and drop.
- 1:12:27[SPEAKER_01]: And now I might get a crack couple of beers to produce.
- 1:12:33[SPEAKER_00]: That's awesome.
- 1:12:33[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe we'll have Scott pop on after like five beers and break down.
- 1:12:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that'll be good.
- 1:12:40[SPEAKER_00]: That's awesome.
- 1:12:41[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you so much, Scott.
- 1:12:42[SPEAKER_00]: And we'll be back here in a minute to to close things out.
- 1:12:46[SPEAKER_00]: All right, there goes Scott awesome.
- 1:12:48[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you know, I wasn't joking when I said,
- 1:12:50[SPEAKER_00]: You know, because I'm still trapped in this realm where I'm like, Oh, Colpating, you know, maybe someone right guy draft some, no, this is the, this is the.
- 1:12:59[SPEAKER_00]: this guy has actually lived this he's done the I've been here for three years I've been here for two years I've been fired after one year I know how it's like I know what the real world is like and I thought that was the best real world draft preview um that we've ever got yeah that was great I mean we can park on a throw a web blanket on some things you know I mean which I think it's me it because we're all interested in the house
- 1:13:21[SPEAKER_02]: That's a great thing.
- 1:13:22[SPEAKER_01]: That's a great thing.
- 1:13:22[SPEAKER_02]: Let's get a realistic look at it.
- 1:13:24[SPEAKER_02]: I do have one last thing to add to that LSU story, by the way.
- 1:13:28[SPEAKER_02]: When I was pulling in that morning in 2014, I saw this souped up, like whatever was some sort of sports car.
- 1:13:37[SPEAKER_02]: I think it was Dodge Charger, blacked out windows, all of that, just speeding through the parking lot.
- 1:13:43[SPEAKER_02]: It's 65 miles now, or you want to guess who got out of the car after it parked?
- 1:13:48[SPEAKER_00]: Edward's around.
- 1:13:49[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, Dell, back I'm June here.
- 1:13:51[SPEAKER_02]: Right around, I'll be in a fell scout.
- 1:13:52[SPEAKER_02]: So I think he gave everybody around him a nice little window and to what was to come over the next decade or so.
- 1:14:00[SPEAKER_00]: You are what your vehicle says you are.
- 1:14:03[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm about to walk right out this door and hop into a used 2016 Chrysler town in countries.
- 1:14:09[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't know what that says about me.
- 1:14:11[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe Scott, Scott, say I'm pretty.
- 1:14:13[SPEAKER_00]: I'll ask Scott Turner when maybe you'll pop that down.
- 1:14:16[SPEAKER_00]: He's the goal.
- 1:14:17[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I'm financially responsible.
- 1:14:19[SPEAKER_00]: We'll be able to get up next.
- 1:14:19[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe we're in the next Kirk Cousins.
- 1:14:21[SPEAKER_00]: But thank you guys for listening as always.
- 1:14:24[SPEAKER_00]: We hope you enjoyed this episode.
- 1:14:25[SPEAKER_00]: We've got to do a lot of snow.
- 1:14:26[SPEAKER_00]: We'll do more of this.
- 1:14:28[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, this is what our role at X4 at the end of the day to bring in cool people and to educate us on what's going on.
- 1:14:34[SPEAKER_00]: And we'll see you guys next week.
- 1:14:48[UNKNOWN]: You
