Latest / AFR Saints / Jake Haener To Start For Saints Against Commanders On Sunday
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So all the reports are all the reports are that
- 0:04Speaker 1: the New Orleans Saints will start Jake Hayner against the
- 0:06Speaker 1: Commanders on Sunday if Derek Carr is unable to go.
- 0:10Speaker 1: The official word will be that if Carr can't at
- 0:13Speaker 1: least go through the walkthrough on Saturday, that he would
- 0:18Speaker 1: not play on Sunday against the Commanders. We'll wait and
- 0:23Speaker 1: see what happens with that, but I think all assumptions
- 0:26Speaker 1: are that Derek Carr is not going to be able
- 0:29Speaker 1: to play. So officially on the Friday injury report, Derek
- 0:32Speaker 1: Carr is listed as officially doubtful. DeMarco Jackson bubb means
- 0:37Speaker 1: out Tono Passinio questionable. He could make his season debut.
- 0:42Speaker 1: The good news Alvin Kamara Juwan Johnson both full participants
- 0:46Speaker 1: in Friday's practice. So Camaro with the illness, Juwan Johnson
- 0:49Speaker 1: with the foot injury who did not practice on Thursday,
- 0:54Speaker 1: I'm sorry it was limited on Thursday. Juwan Johnson was
- 0:56Speaker 1: but full on Friday, so that's good news. But again
- 1:00Speaker 1: we'll wait and see on Car again doubtful, but they
- 1:02Speaker 1: want to see if he can go through a walk
- 1:04Speaker 1: through on Saturday before making the final call on Sunday,
- 1:07Speaker 1: but it's very likely that it's gonna be Jake Hayner,
- 1:09Speaker 1: and I don't love the decision. And this isn't necessarily
- 1:12Speaker 1: a knock on Jake Hayner or some tremendous praise for
- 1:19Speaker 1: for Spencer Ratler. I just think it's more a matter
- 1:22Speaker 1: of if you're playing for the now or the future,
- 1:28Speaker 1: what you feel like you're playing for, and the Saints
- 1:31Speaker 1: clearly still very much feel like they're playing for the now.
- 1:35Speaker 1: While their odds of making the playoffs are less than
- 1:38Speaker 1: one percent, as long as you still have a percent chance,
- 1:42Speaker 1: the Saints are are going for it. So they're gonna
- 1:45Speaker 1: play whoever they feel gives them the best chance. And
- 1:47Speaker 1: they watch Spencer Rattler start three games and it didn't
- 1:51Speaker 1: go great. And I don't believe Jake Hayner is much
- 1:56Speaker 1: better an option. But that's my opinion. We just haven't
- 2:00Speaker 1: seen it. Jay Caner has never started a game in
- 2:02Speaker 1: the NFL. Jay Canner has played in seven games this season,
- 2:07Speaker 1: all in a backup role. He's attempted twenty nine passes.
- 2:10Speaker 1: He's fourteen of twenty nine for a bucks seventy seven,
- 2:12Speaker 1: a touchdown, no picks, his QBR is forty two and
- 2:15Speaker 1: his quarterback rating is seventy nine. Like it ain't been good,
- 2:20Speaker 1: but we also haven't seen him go through a week
- 2:22Speaker 1: preparing as a starter and then having the opportunity to
- 2:25Speaker 1: start a game. I presume we will see that on Sunday.
- 2:29Speaker 1: And unlike Spencer Ratler, who the three games he started
- 2:34Speaker 1: was all with a makeshift offense, a mishmash offensive line
- 2:36Speaker 1: in front of him, without his best weapons, at least
- 2:39Speaker 1: Jay Hayner is going to have the starting offensive line
- 2:42Speaker 1: in a hole in front of him on Sunday. That
- 2:45Speaker 1: provided he is the starter, and you'll have Kamara, and
- 2:47Speaker 1: you'll have Kendre Miller, and you'll have Foster Moro, and
- 2:50Speaker 1: you'll have Juwan Johnson. You're not gonna have a Lave
- 2:53Speaker 1: or Shaheed, but that's been notable throughout the course of
- 2:56Speaker 1: the season, and you're not gonna have obviously not gonna
- 2:58Speaker 1: have Taysom Hill either. But most significantly is he will
- 3:03Speaker 1: have the starting offensive line in front of him. I
- 3:06Speaker 1: just don't expect anything better. But I also don't know,
- 3:09Speaker 1: which is probably what the Saints are looking at here.
- 3:11Speaker 1: It's probably one of those situations where they know what
- 3:16Speaker 1: they have in Spencer Ratler, which is a rookie quarterback
- 3:19Speaker 1: who's not ready to go win you games in the NFL.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Not to say he never will be, but just right
- 3:24Speaker 1: now he's not. You can't definitively say that about Hayter
- 3:28Speaker 1: because we haven't seen Haytern do it. It's like they're
- 3:32Speaker 1: trying to catch lightning in a bottle to say we
- 3:34Speaker 1: know Rattler can't. I don't think Hayn can. But until
- 3:38Speaker 1: we find out, we don't know. So let's find out.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Maybe he catch lightning in a bottle. The best example
- 3:42Speaker 1: would be, Ohmy cutlets from a year ago. We saw
- 3:46Speaker 1: it with Tommy DeVito. A year ago, Tommy DeVito ripped
- 3:48Speaker 1: off three straight wins as the Giant starting quarterback. Now
- 3:51Speaker 1: he stinks, he stinks. He's not a starting quarterback in
- 3:54Speaker 1: the NFL. He'll never start again, unless if it's in
- 3:57Speaker 1: a situation like this, the starter gets hurt, he has
- 3:59Speaker 1: to go in. But he's a career backup for as
- 4:02Speaker 1: long as he might play in the NFL. But last
- 4:04Speaker 1: year the Giants went and won three in a row
- 4:08Speaker 1: and four of their final six with Tommy Cutletz as
- 4:11Speaker 1: the starting quarterback for in place of an injured Daniel Jones.
- 4:14Speaker 1: But very clearly Danny Cutlet's isn't any good. I don't
- 4:17Speaker 1: know why I keep saying Tommy Cutz. I just like
- 4:19Speaker 1: saying Tommy Cutletz to be very honest. That's why I
- 4:21Speaker 1: keep doing it. But you all understand the point. So
- 4:23Speaker 1: I don't think Jay Caneer is any good. I don't
- 4:25Speaker 1: think Jake Caner is gonna wow us and become some
- 4:29Speaker 1: perennial starter in the NFL and get a nine figure deal.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Somewhere down the line. We're all gonna say, Well, it
- 4:35Speaker 1: started in that December game in the Dome when the
- 4:38Speaker 1: Saints took on JD five and the Washington Commanders. I
- 4:41Speaker 1: don't believe that's gonna happen. But could you go out
- 4:44Speaker 1: on Sunday behind a good offensive line, Kamara Kendre Miller
- 4:50Speaker 1: maybe play some really good defense against the Commanders, which
- 4:54Speaker 1: I as much as the Saints have struggle to stop
- 4:56Speaker 1: running quarterbacks, I don't truly, in my heart of heart
- 4:58Speaker 1: believes that's gonna happen. But this is and defense that's
- 5:03Speaker 1: middle bottom, seventeenth in the NFL in scoring defense. Maybe
- 5:08Speaker 1: it's a game. We just watched Thursday Night football and
- 5:10Speaker 1: watch the Niners and the Rams play at twelve to
- 5:12Speaker 1: six game, a field goal game. It's the freaking NFL.
- 5:16Speaker 1: I saw the Saints go on the road and score
- 5:18Speaker 1: nine points against the Bucks and win a game. I mean,
- 5:21Speaker 1: maybe you find a way, as ugly as it might be,
- 5:24Speaker 1: to scratch out a win, and then maybe next week
- 5:26Speaker 1: Derek Carr's back, and so the one off with Hayiner
- 5:31Speaker 1: could keep you mathematically alive for another week. I don't know,
- 5:34Speaker 1: I don't believe it. I'm just going through in my
- 5:36Speaker 1: brain what the Saints are probably thinking. For me, I
- 5:40Speaker 1: still want to see more of Spencer Rattler, because I
- 5:42Speaker 1: know this Saints team is not going to the playoffs.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Like I know this team is not going to make
- 5:48Speaker 1: the playoffs. It might be this week that they're mathematically
- 5:51Speaker 1: eliminated if they lose and Tampa wins, Like we could
- 5:54Speaker 1: see the Saints mathematically eliminated this week, and if that happens, okay,
- 5:59Speaker 1: well then the Saints are out and then you start
- 6:01Speaker 1: looking toward the future and what it may be. And
- 6:04Speaker 1: I believe, as do the Saints, it's why they went
- 6:06Speaker 1: with Spencer Ratler earlier this season that Rattler is the
- 6:10Speaker 1: guy that has the higher upside. So if Rattler's the
- 6:12Speaker 1: guy with the higher upside, then you need to keep
- 6:15Speaker 1: getting him more reps. You need to keep throwing him
- 6:17Speaker 1: in the deep end to see if he figures this out.
- 6:19Speaker 1: It figures it out the way that we've seen Bryce
- 6:22Speaker 1: Young do that in Carolina. Again, I don't think Bryce
- 6:24Speaker 1: Young and Carolina is by any stretch awesome. But what
- 6:28Speaker 1: you've seen with Bryce Young hero of the last month,
- 6:31Speaker 1: is a guy that looks like a competent starter and
- 6:34Speaker 1: might actually end up being a good starter. Whereas through
- 6:37Speaker 1: the first month of this season, as we approach the
- 6:40Speaker 1: trade deadline, there was a very real conversation about whether
- 6:42Speaker 1: or not the Carolina Panthers should trade Bryce Young and
- 6:45Speaker 1: move on midway through his second year. It was that bad.
- 6:48Speaker 1: So sometimes it just takes guys longer to develop. I
- 6:51Speaker 1: don't know that we can make that declaration about Spencer Ratler,
- 6:54Speaker 1: but we can make a declaration about is you're not
- 6:57Speaker 1: winning games because of Spencer Ratler right now? Maybe you
- 7:00Speaker 1: could with Jake Hayner, which is probably what the Saints
- 7:02Speaker 1: are thinking. Still, I would rather not waste the opportunity
- 7:06Speaker 1: to get reps for the guy with the higher upside
- 7:07Speaker 1: to continue to evaluate him. But I don't make those decisions.
- 7:11Speaker 1: And Darren Rizzy's trying to win this job, and if
- 7:15Speaker 1: he keeps winning, every week he wins, he steps closer
- 7:19Speaker 1: to becoming the full time head coach of the New
- 7:21Speaker 1: Orleans Saints, and having the interim tag dropped, maybe Jake
- 7:24Speaker 1: Hayner is a better option for him to get closer
- 7:27Speaker 1: to that this week, So Saints Commander's Sunday if Carr
- 7:30Speaker 1: can't go, and it looks like he won't. But if
- 7:32Speaker 1: Carr can't go, it'll be Hayter instead of Spencer Ratler
