  So here's a question. Remember when movie night meant a trip to the video store?

  You walked every aisle and finally you picked out a movie and you got home to

  discover somebody forgot to rewind the tape.

  And if you forgot to return it, the late fees was waiting for you.

  Today, Dr. E and I are back to talk about the VHS years.

  It's nostalgia time. We laugh about the movies we rented, the tapes we accidentally

  recorded over, and little reminder to be kind and rewind.

  But here's the bigger question. If you could rewind one moment in your life, would you?

  We can't change yesterday's, but God's grace gives us a way to move forward today.

  I have to start with this, and I'm going to ask this to you and to Dr. E.

  Do you remember going to that video store on a Friday night?

  You could spend a half an hour walking the aisles, right? And you read the movies
• 1:44
  in the back of the boxes trying to agree on the movie.

  Then you get home, you put the tape in, you realize the person left.

  It right at the end. Now you had to wait for the whole thing to rewind before
• 1:56
  the movie night could even begin.
• 1:58
  Dr. E, I know you want to get in on this. There was always that risk of recording
• 2:02
  over something important.
• 2:04
  And I know I've labeled the tape, do not touch, but of course,
• 2:08
  somebody still recorded over it. I'm still hurting by my Saturday Night's Main
• 2:12
  Event tape that was taped over by Art by taping...
• 2:15
  Game six of the 86 World Series. Dr. E, let's get started.

  My man, oh God, these bring back memories.
• 2:23
  So, you know, it started with like the little local store, right?
• 2:27
  We would go into a little strip mall and there would be a little mom and pop
• 2:30
  shop and they would have very few choices. Like it seemed like there were a
• 2:34
  million videos, but there really weren't.
• 2:37
  And then all of a sudden these poor little mom and pop shops got pushed away
• 2:41
  by what Blockbuster video and Hollywood video and all these other things.
• 2:45
  And I remember the kids, it was such an exciting time.
• 2:48
  We would go in and we would pick out the movies for the night and then we would
• 2:53
  stop and get a pizza. And it was like such a, it was a part of my,
• 2:57
  my life as my, as a young parent, as a, you know, as a young man.
• 3:02
  And it went bye-bye poof.
• 3:05
  And by the way, if you didn't rewind tape, you would get penalized.
• 3:09
  I think you would have to pay an extra dollar if you brought it back and you didn't rewind the tape.
• 3:14
  Because, you know, the little kid in the back of the store with the nose ring
• 3:19
  and the tattoo, you know, they would basically, you know, get so pissed that
• 3:25
  they would have to rewind the damn tape.
• 3:27
  It would literally take, it would take five minutes to rewind that thing.
• 3:31
  They used to have a rewinder, a job. Oh, they sure did. Oh, yeah,
• 3:34
  that's what their job was. Yes, they just rewinded tapes. And do you remember
• 3:38
  when they got a little selected, they'd started making those gadgets that just
• 3:42
  was rewinders? Yeah. That's it. The fast rewinders.
• 3:46
  So instead, instead of five minutes, it took two minutes. Yeah.
• 3:49
  But then all of a sudden it would be too powerful and it would rip the tape
• 3:52
  off of the movie. Oh yeah. Oh my God.
• 3:55
  It's a technology, but you know what?
• 3:58
  Those are the kinds, see, that's what we always tell our kids,
• 4:01
  right? You're like, you didn't, they're not going to understand or remember
• 4:05
  like all the work we had to do, like life without cell phones.
• 4:10
  Imagine like you know how to go out and play no video games right you know just
• 4:15
  go out and play no play dates you played with who was in your neighborhood like you know,
• 4:20
  you were more independent you were less you were more social you were able to
• 4:25
  carry on a conversation you were you know you had street smarts right you needed
• 4:30
  street smarts these kids don't have street smarts.
• 4:34
  I'm glad you brought all that up because I am officially doctoring.
• 4:39
  I love using that word because you're the doctor.
• 4:41
  Doctoring the fact that for the next couple of weeks, we are going to be on
• 4:45
  a nostalgia kick and we're going to discuss all those kinds of topics.
• 4:49
  So get ready, get ready. But here's the thing. I know you're going to ask me.
• 4:52
  And it's really sad that these places are not in business anymore.
• 4:55
  I don't get it. I don't get it. Let me tell you something, especially nowadays
• 4:59
  in the dating world, that was the way you would actually get together and And
• 5:03
  you'd actually have that conversation while looking for movies.
• 5:08
  Yeah. Or if you had a girl or a boy or whatever that you were interested in,
• 5:13
  you would say, hey, let's go and pick a movie together. And we'll make popcorn.
• 5:17
  Make popcorn. Not buy popcorn. Make popcorn. On the stove.
• 5:22
  With that cast iron pan. You throw the olive oil on.
• 5:26
  And you would pop it out. I'm telling you. There's nothing like it.
• 5:29
  So now here's what Dr. G is going to ask me. So I'm going to beat him to it.

  Yeah. How do we make this into a spiritual episode? I know exactly why,
• 5:38
  because you're going to ask the, because you already asked the question,
• 5:41
  would you rewind any moment in your life?
• 5:45
  And that's where we're going to go. Would you? We'll start with you.

  A hundred percent. Absolutely. You really would?
• 5:51
  Yeah. A hundred percent. Okay. So we're going to leave that.

  We're going to leave that as a teaser. So then you're going to answer that the next time we come up.

  And I'm going to say no for me. Don't worry, honey. It has nothing to do with my choice in women.

  So today we're going to have some fun with this. And this is how I'm going to

  put it all together for us. Yes. I'm going to, I'm going to do it this way.

  So, you know, the more we laugh about rewinding those old tapes,
• 6:17
  the more I think about how often we try to remind, rewind our own lives.
• 6:23
  We replay our conversations and think, why did I say that?
• 6:28
  We remember a decision and wonder, what if I had chosen differently?
• 6:32
  Just like Dr. E said, sometimes the memory comes back so clearly that it feels
• 6:37
  like we're standing in the moment all over again.
• 6:41
  I'm going to point this out. This is what triggered everything about this episode.
• 6:44
  I was just reading an excerpt in the Bible, and it doesn't ask us to pretend
• 6:49
  those moments never happened.
• 6:50
  If we hurt someone, we can apologize and do what we can to make things right.
• 6:57
  If you've made a mistake, we can learn from it. But God doesn't want us to be trapped there.

  So please, pressing rewind over and over is not a bad thing.

  So maybe the question for today as I close out isn't how do I go back and change everything?

  Maybe it's God, what can I do with a day that you've given me today?
