- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:18Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan, and this is episode number three
- 0:21Speaker 1: d and fifteen, and today in the show, I'm joined
- 0:23Speaker 1: by outdoor writer and white Tail expert Travis Faulkner to
- 0:27Speaker 1: go deep into new rut hunting ideas, stand sites, calling, tactics,
- 0:32Speaker 1: and much much more. All Right, welcome to the Wired
- 0:40Speaker 1: to Hunt podcast, brought to you by Onyx to In
- 0:43Speaker 1: the show, we've got Travis Faulkner. He is a serious
- 0:48Speaker 1: hunter and outdoor writer from Kentucky and he's in period
- 0:52Speaker 1: in all sorts of places like Outdoor Life, Field Stream,
- 0:55Speaker 1: North American, white Tail, and a number of other publications
- 0:59Speaker 1: and show os. And today he's gonna be joining me
- 1:02Speaker 1: to talk rut hunting strategy, all things rut, pinch points, funnels, betting, years, decoying, rattling,
- 1:10Speaker 1: how to find the spot within the spot, you know,
- 1:13Speaker 1: everything you needed to be doing this time of year
- 1:15Speaker 1: to fill a tag. That's what last week's podcast was about.
- 1:18Speaker 1: That's what this week's podcast is about. Because we're in
- 1:21Speaker 1: that super Bowl of the white tail season. It's now
- 1:24Speaker 1: is the time to get it done, So I want
- 1:26Speaker 1: to make sure we're getting you some good info. And
- 1:28Speaker 1: that is also why I've got a guest co host
- 1:32Speaker 1: on the show with me today for our intro, because
- 1:35Speaker 1: he's always got some helpful things to share, and there's
- 1:38Speaker 1: no better time to hear that kind of thing than now.
- 1:40Speaker 1: So Andy May, thanks for helping me out on this one. Hey,
- 1:44Speaker 1: no problem, buddy, anytime. Excited to catch up because we've
- 1:48Speaker 1: been kinda You've been off in Nebraska. I was in Minnesota,
- 1:52Speaker 1: and we've been like trying to play phone tag and
- 1:53Speaker 1: get caught up and haven't got to spend too much
- 1:55Speaker 1: time chatting. So I'm glad we can do this and
- 2:01Speaker 1: you have. You've been on a tear this year. Um.
- 2:06Speaker 1: We talked earlier. You killed that buck in Kentucky, and
- 2:09Speaker 1: then since then you killed one in Ohio. Then you
- 2:11Speaker 1: went to Nebraska and killed a big mule there, and
- 2:13Speaker 1: then you came back to Michigan. You just killed a
- 2:15Speaker 1: giant Michigan. Um, so I'm curious if you could send
- 2:19Speaker 1: like your lucky rabbit's foot or four leaf clover or
- 2:24Speaker 1: whatever it is. If you send it my way because
- 2:25Speaker 1: because my luck is is all out from last year. UM,
- 2:30Speaker 1: so I need some Andy may good juju please. Yeah, yeah,
- 2:34Speaker 1: it's I don't know, it doesn't always happen like this,
- 2:37Speaker 1: but you know, it seems like every once in a
- 2:39Speaker 1: while it does. You just kinda try to ride that
- 2:41Speaker 1: wave for as long as it will last. But you know,
- 2:44Speaker 1: I'm sure, I'm sure it'll end soon, so I'll try
- 2:46Speaker 1: to send some of your way. Thanks, And in all seriousness,
- 2:49Speaker 1: I don't think it's luck. I know that it's preparation
- 2:52Speaker 1: and hard work and a whole lot of experience that's
- 2:54Speaker 1: led to all that success Andy, But I do think
- 2:59Speaker 1: could be worth it least talking about your Michigan hunt,
- 3:01Speaker 1: because that was pretty recent. That was just in the
- 3:03Speaker 1: last couple of days of October. Um. And it was
- 3:07Speaker 1: interesting because you texted me the morning of and you said,
- 3:11Speaker 1: this big buck showed up. He's in a spot where
- 3:14Speaker 1: if a big boy rolls in, he doesn't live very long.
- 3:17Speaker 1: I think I can kill him. And then like seven
- 3:20Speaker 1: hours later you text him and you said you got him.
- 3:23Speaker 1: So I gotta hear how it happened. Um, this laid
- 3:27Speaker 1: October kind of pre rut time frame. UM. Really interested
- 3:31Speaker 1: to see how you pulled it off. Can you give
- 3:32Speaker 1: me this goop? Sure? Yeah, So this is a book
- 3:36Speaker 1: that UM, I have a little bit of history with
- 3:39Speaker 1: as far as um uh. Last year, I had some
- 3:44Speaker 1: encounters with him. I had some sightings with him and
- 3:46Speaker 1: and lots of pictures and he was very unique, nice
- 3:50Speaker 1: dear last year, very identifiable, super heavy rack UM kind
- 3:55Speaker 1: of tight frame, I'm you know, not very wide, and
- 4:00Speaker 1: he had a typical side that was a half of
- 4:03Speaker 1: an eight so four point side, and then the other side,
- 4:07Speaker 1: UM kind of went up. The brow tyne on that
- 4:11Speaker 1: side split and then it sort of had like a
- 4:13Speaker 1: non typical look. And what I think happened was that
- 4:17Speaker 1: during velvet it must have got bumped and it just
- 4:19Speaker 1: kind of grew sort of funny. It wasn't like a
- 4:22Speaker 1: super freak or anything, but it just kind of grew
- 4:25Speaker 1: non typical a little bit. So he's very identifiable, UM.
- 4:29Speaker 1: And he started showing up on this property UM right
- 4:34Speaker 1: on that like that third week, third and fourth week
- 4:37Speaker 1: of October, so right that pre rot time, UM, he
- 4:41Speaker 1: was one. I was really looking forward to seeing this
- 4:43Speaker 1: year as a four year old because I thought man,
- 4:45Speaker 1: he's non typical, and what's he gonna turn into? He's
- 4:48Speaker 1: gonna turn into this this crazy side non typical. I was.
- 4:51Speaker 1: I was really pumped. Um. One thing that was distinct
- 4:54Speaker 1: about him as a three year old, really long brow tygns.
- 4:58Speaker 1: You know, they're probably six seven inches is, you know,
- 5:01Speaker 1: a lot longer than your typical buck in this area usually,
- 5:05Speaker 1: you know, good brow times are for four or four
- 5:08Speaker 1: and a half inches something like that around here on average,
- 5:11Speaker 1: I guess. And so I was really looking forward to
- 5:16Speaker 1: to finding him this year and hopefully hunting him see
- 5:19Speaker 1: what he turned into. And just like clockwork, just like
- 5:22Speaker 1: a lot of these mature bucks do, Um, he showed
- 5:26Speaker 1: up in the exact same area during the exact same
- 5:29Speaker 1: time frame. And that's something I've really learned the key
- 5:31Speaker 1: in on the last ten years or so, I was
- 5:34Speaker 1: probably ten fifteen years. I started noticing it, and then
- 5:37Speaker 1: I really started planning my hunts for particular deer in
- 5:40Speaker 1: particular areas using that strategy. And he showed up the
- 5:44Speaker 1: same area, um, just like he did last year. Um.
- 5:47Speaker 1: It just must be his kind of breeding area, his
- 5:51Speaker 1: rut area. So he leaves this his summer, you know,
- 5:53Speaker 1: in early season home range and wherever that is, I
- 5:56Speaker 1: have no idea, but he shows up here, and um,
- 6:00Speaker 1: I was in Nebraska. Um uh. Then I on my
- 6:05Speaker 1: way home from Nebraska. You know, I'm kind of runs
- 6:07Speaker 1: through my head. You know, what am I gonna do
- 6:09Speaker 1: when I get back in Michigan. I felt a little
- 6:11Speaker 1: bit out of touch. Um because I was in Nebraska
- 6:14Speaker 1: and then I was hunting Ohio. It's not a big
- 6:16Speaker 1: ten point in Ohio. And I had hunted Michigan some
- 6:19Speaker 1: and I had some really good hunts for some other deer. Um,
- 6:23Speaker 1: but I was out of touch with just what was
- 6:24Speaker 1: going on when I normally, you know, I say I
- 6:28Speaker 1: like to have my finger on the pulse. I like
- 6:29Speaker 1: to know what's going on everywhere I hunt, And um,
- 6:33Speaker 1: I'm just doing that and started to interrupt you, Andy,
- 6:36Speaker 1: But when you say you get the finger on the pulse,
- 6:38Speaker 1: what does that actually mean? Like, how are you actually
- 6:40Speaker 1: doing Is that because you're just checking cameras so frequently,
- 6:43Speaker 1: or you're getting out there and still glassing even where
- 6:45Speaker 1: you're not hunting, or how are you doing that this
- 6:47Speaker 1: time of year? It's just kind of all of the above.
- 6:49Speaker 1: So so I'm I'm my strategy is absolutely checking cameras.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Okay I did. I definitely do that. Um, I get
- 7:00Speaker 1: boots on the ground looking for tracks, looking for areas
- 7:03Speaker 1: that are getting hot with signed so I'll I'll do
- 7:05Speaker 1: quick walkthroughs through areas that aren't super sensitive, looking for
- 7:10Speaker 1: rubs and scrapes popping up. And these are areas that
- 7:12Speaker 1: I know a big buck lives or an area I
- 7:15Speaker 1: know typically produces big bucks, and that's what I focus on.
- 7:19Speaker 1: So when those areas heat up, UM, you know I can.
- 7:23Speaker 1: I can see that by just getting out there and
- 7:27Speaker 1: and just doing a quick kind of edge scout. I
- 7:29Speaker 1: guess you know I'm not. I'm not diving into bedding
- 7:31Speaker 1: areas or or real thick areas where I risk bumping
- 7:34Speaker 1: deer because I've already done that. I already know where
- 7:37Speaker 1: those places are. I know them, and I know them
- 7:39Speaker 1: like the back of my hand. So this is more
- 7:41Speaker 1: of an edge scout. I'm looking for are these bucks
- 7:44Speaker 1: getting more active? Are they in the area? Am I
- 7:47Speaker 1: finding a big track? Um? In a lot of cases,
- 7:50Speaker 1: you know, there's only one or two mature bucks in
- 7:53Speaker 1: an area. So when I when I get a big track,
- 7:55Speaker 1: I often know what deer It is not always, but
- 7:58Speaker 1: sometimes they have distinct features and and you learn that
- 8:01Speaker 1: over years. Sometimes it's just a big track and you
- 8:03Speaker 1: assume that that's the one because there's not five or
- 8:06Speaker 1: six of them. There's one a lot of times. So um.
- 8:10Speaker 1: And then the other way is is glassing. I do
- 8:13Speaker 1: a fair bit of glassing in areas that are conducive
- 8:16Speaker 1: to it. You know, I'm not glassing into a swamp
- 8:21Speaker 1: that I have to walk through, you know, a half
- 8:23Speaker 1: mile of hardwood's to get to. I'm not glass in
- 8:25Speaker 1: those areas. But where a hunt in northern Ohio, it's flat,
- 8:30Speaker 1: it's agg country. The the trees that are there are
- 8:34Speaker 1: hedgerows and tiny woodlots. So there it pays for me
- 8:39Speaker 1: to stay mobile and glass and and just try to
- 8:43Speaker 1: catch a glimpse of a good deer right at last
- 8:47Speaker 1: light or right at first light. So it just depends
- 8:49Speaker 1: on the property. Um. But I use all those above
- 8:52Speaker 1: methods and I I kind of do them all. Not
- 8:57Speaker 1: not every day, but I'm doing something every day to
- 9:00Speaker 1: kind of narrowed down my focus to a certain deer
- 9:02Speaker 1: or a certain area. So um, jumping, just real quick
- 9:06Speaker 1: jumping from the Michigan Buck to the Ohio buck. I
- 9:09Speaker 1: spent five days over like an eight day period, driving
- 9:13Speaker 1: down to Ohio to Glass before work. So it's not far.
- 9:18Speaker 1: My new location where I live is only fifteen minutes
- 9:21Speaker 1: from border, about twenty minutes from the property. So I'm
- 9:24Speaker 1: driving twenty minutes away from work to Glass at first
- 9:28Speaker 1: light trying to locate the steer, and then I'm driving
- 9:30Speaker 1: from there an hour and tend to work. So it
- 9:33Speaker 1: wasn't that big of a sacrifice. It was just twenty minutes,
- 9:36Speaker 1: you know, five or six days over a I don't know,
- 9:39Speaker 1: tend to two week day period, and then I finally
- 9:41Speaker 1: located them and that's what led to that kill. So
- 9:44Speaker 1: so there the strategy was glassing um with this Michigan buck.
- 9:48Speaker 1: The strategy was just checking cameras and my cameras, you know,
- 9:52Speaker 1: at this spot. I run cameras kind of two ways.
- 9:56Speaker 1: I run them in spots that I can checked off
- 9:58Speaker 1: and check often, you know, uh, just in to cover
- 10:02Speaker 1: um around food sources where dear typically encounter humans or
- 10:07Speaker 1: farming equipment or just more traffic, and I'll check those often,
- 10:12Speaker 1: not every day, um, it might be a once in
- 10:14Speaker 1: a week deal. It might be during a rain if
- 10:16Speaker 1: there's rain for four days, I might check it two
- 10:19Speaker 1: out of the four days, but I'll check them more
- 10:22Speaker 1: when things start heating up like now and during the rut,
- 10:26Speaker 1: I feel like I can get away with Marcus dearre
- 10:28Speaker 1: moving more. Their focus is not so much on survival
- 10:31Speaker 1: more on breeding. I can get away with a little
- 10:33Speaker 1: more foot traffic in the areas I hunt, but I
- 10:35Speaker 1: still don't go into the sensitive areas. So with this
- 10:39Speaker 1: buck got back from Nebraska, I felt a little out
- 10:43Speaker 1: of touch with what was going on in Michigan. I
- 10:45Speaker 1: didn't know what big bucks were around right now, I
- 10:49Speaker 1: didn't know what areas were heating up. So I I
- 10:52Speaker 1: spent that first day back doing that. After work, I
- 10:55Speaker 1: drove a hit two or three spots, check some cameras,
- 10:58Speaker 1: check some field edges for activity, UH, for tracks and whatnot.
- 11:04Speaker 1: And I got a picture of this deer. And he
- 11:06Speaker 1: had been on the camera for three or four days,
- 11:09Speaker 1: nothing in daylight, but you know, within an hour after dark,
- 11:14Speaker 1: so I knew he was I knew he was here,
- 11:16Speaker 1: I knew he had showed back up. And the reason
- 11:19Speaker 1: I sent you that text is because I felt very
- 11:22Speaker 1: confident I could kill this dear because he was so
- 11:24Speaker 1: active last year. I knew where he wanted to bed,
- 11:27Speaker 1: I knew where he wanted to travel, and I just
- 11:29Speaker 1: know how to hunt this area really well. Okay, And
- 11:32Speaker 1: and the whole key to this this area is just
- 11:35Speaker 1: just staying out. Really, you just have to have the
- 11:37Speaker 1: discipline to stay out. And if you can monitor when
- 11:41Speaker 1: that area heats up and then die right in, you
- 11:44Speaker 1: got a really good chance of it, at the very
- 11:46Speaker 1: least seeing that dear. But because of the way this
- 11:48Speaker 1: property sets up, you have a really good chance of
- 11:50Speaker 1: having an encounter, like a close encounter with this deer.
- 11:53Speaker 1: The movement and the betting is pretty straightforward. It's got
- 11:57Speaker 1: some pretty well defined betting and and uh like travel
- 12:02Speaker 1: routes because because a lot of it consists of open field,
- 12:06Speaker 1: a lot of it consists of standing water, so it
- 12:08Speaker 1: creates a lot of terrain type funnels. Um, So all
- 12:12Speaker 1: I need to do is wait for the good buck
- 12:15Speaker 1: to show up and then to hunt these areas smart um,
- 12:19Speaker 1: with the wind and watching my access and then with
- 12:23Speaker 1: you know, with some luck, you know, those deers, those
- 12:25Speaker 1: deer come out of the betting areas that they've always used,
- 12:28Speaker 1: and they traveled down these areas. So what I try
- 12:31Speaker 1: to do is going at the right time, wait for
- 12:34Speaker 1: the right wind, wait for the right conditions. I like,
- 12:36Speaker 1: obviously cool weather is good, not a necessity in my
- 12:40Speaker 1: opinion this time of year, but um, you know some
- 12:44Speaker 1: cooler weather is good and mean, the main thing is
- 12:46Speaker 1: just waiting until they show up and then and then
- 12:49Speaker 1: timing it right and waiting for those perfect wing conditions.
- 12:51Speaker 1: And then in this this piece in particular accessing, you know,
- 12:56Speaker 1: there's an easy access where you're going through dry land
- 12:59Speaker 1: and you will bumped here and you're at least on
- 13:03Speaker 1: that day your wind is going to blow into one
- 13:05Speaker 1: of the betting ears, and happened to be one that
- 13:07Speaker 1: he was in that day I killed him. So what
- 13:11Speaker 1: I do is I come in through the back access
- 13:12Speaker 1: and and um, I have to wait, I don't know,
- 13:16Speaker 1: thirty five minutes, well about thirty minutes through knee deep
- 13:19Speaker 1: water and cat tails. So that's what I did on
- 13:23Speaker 1: that day. I put the hip boots on and I
- 13:27Speaker 1: waded through the water and the cat tails, and I
- 13:31Speaker 1: got set up. There was there was two betting areas.
- 13:35Speaker 1: There's actually three betting areas that I thought he could
- 13:38Speaker 1: be in. Two for sure. Can you explain what those
- 13:43Speaker 1: betting airs looked like? Like, what kind of zone were
- 13:46Speaker 1: you looking at the potential buck betting are he could
- 13:48Speaker 1: be in. I didn't. Just trying to picture exactly the
- 13:51Speaker 1: whole scenario. I'll explain. Um So on the edge of
- 13:55Speaker 1: this swamp and cat tails, there's an island, okay, And
- 14:00Speaker 1: you can walk around the swamp on dry land and
- 14:03Speaker 1: get to that same island and set up, But the
- 14:05Speaker 1: wind would have busted you up before before set up.
- 14:09Speaker 1: So what I did is I came in on the
- 14:11Speaker 1: back side. This island doesn't have any yoaks or anything,
- 14:15Speaker 1: but what it does have is a little point off
- 14:17Speaker 1: the island where there's a really nice little thicket and
- 14:20Speaker 1: some kind of um, I don't know what kind of
- 14:23Speaker 1: trees there are. I'm not good at identifying trees, but
- 14:25Speaker 1: they're kind of bushy trees, like the kind of deer
- 14:27Speaker 1: like the bed under and there's always five or six beds,
- 14:30Speaker 1: big buck beds, and it's the same buck moving positions
- 14:34Speaker 1: kind of around that point and around that island. I mean,
- 14:37Speaker 1: it's been there for years and I've seen multiple multiple
- 14:40Speaker 1: bucks come off of that island, but there's just not
- 14:42Speaker 1: always mature. UM. So that was my number one. UM.
- 14:48Speaker 1: The number two was about about a quarter mile away.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Is this this wood's okay, it's just a normal block
- 14:57Speaker 1: of woods when you look at it, budding up to
- 15:00Speaker 1: a bean field. So when you go to that wood's
- 15:04Speaker 1: edge and you look in it, it looks open, kind
- 15:07Speaker 1: of like parkish, you know, not your typical woods you
- 15:10Speaker 1: want to you want to be hunting in for mature deer.
- 15:12Speaker 1: But if you go about a hundred yards in, there
- 15:15Speaker 1: is remnants of an old tornado or some sort of
- 15:19Speaker 1: super cell or something where all the trees are a
- 15:22Speaker 1: good portions of them are down and they're creating all
- 15:25Speaker 1: this tangle and horizontal cover and let a ton of
- 15:29Speaker 1: sunlight in. This happened who knows, five ten years ago,
- 15:33Speaker 1: I don't know, but it's super thick like it's hard
- 15:36Speaker 1: to walk through. You can't see into it. And that's
- 15:39Speaker 1: another area where the big ones like to bed, and
- 15:42Speaker 1: I've had them come out of there before. So that
- 15:44Speaker 1: was my number two. But the reason that spot is
- 15:47Speaker 1: so deadly, it's kind of a fairly big woods, probably
- 15:51Speaker 1: fifty acres or so UM, but up up against the
- 15:56Speaker 1: woods in the middle of that bean field is a
- 15:59Speaker 1: is a drainage. Okay. So it's this little creek that's
- 16:02Speaker 1: about two three ft wide, kind of winds through the field,
- 16:06Speaker 1: whether it's corn or beans, just winds through the field
- 16:09Speaker 1: on anywhere. On each side of that creek is fifty
- 16:13Speaker 1: two let's say maybe eight yards of like swale marsh grass.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Because it's low, it dips down. The farmer can't plant,
- 16:21Speaker 1: it's too wet. Okay, So where do you Where do
- 16:26Speaker 1: mature bucks like to enter into a field? Low spots
- 16:30Speaker 1: the low spot. They always enter the low spot in
- 16:32Speaker 1: the evening, Okay, So that's what they do. The thermals
- 16:36Speaker 1: fall down into this low spot and that's where they
- 16:39Speaker 1: come out. What what sweetens this spot so much is
- 16:42Speaker 1: that this low spot is a swale of marsh grass.
- 16:45Speaker 1: I mean they can literally enter leave that woods and
- 16:48Speaker 1: enter into the field in that low spot and they'll
- 16:53Speaker 1: mingle in, rut and and rub and do all this
- 16:56Speaker 1: stuff in that little swale. And you can't see them
- 16:58Speaker 1: unless you're right on the edge, Like if you're in
- 17:01Speaker 1: the field, you're a hundred yards away. You can't see
- 17:04Speaker 1: down there. It's it's too low. Um. So I've had
- 17:09Speaker 1: good luck hunting right on the edge of that woods,
- 17:11Speaker 1: either on the north or south side of that swale.
- 17:15Speaker 1: I call it a swaye. I don't know what you'd
- 17:16Speaker 1: call it, but it's a drainage, you know. It's a
- 17:18Speaker 1: drainage that kind of winds through. Ye. So that was
- 17:22Speaker 1: my number two. So my plan was to hunt number
- 17:25Speaker 1: one and if he's not there, the hunt number two.
- 17:28Speaker 1: If he's not there, hunt number three, number three. I
- 17:30Speaker 1: wasn't as confident in, but I've killed deer out of
- 17:33Speaker 1: out of one and two. Um, so I chose number
- 17:37Speaker 1: one the first day. UM went in with my saddle.
- 17:40Speaker 1: Don't have a spot set up or anything this. Other
- 17:42Speaker 1: people hunt this, so it's like I don't have presets.
- 17:45Speaker 1: I don't want other people norm where I'm going. And
- 17:49Speaker 1: I went in and I set up on the north side.
- 17:53Speaker 1: It was it was a southernly. Um. It was like
- 17:58Speaker 1: it's blowing out of the south at a bit that day.
- 18:00Speaker 1: So I set up on the northern side. And and
- 18:04Speaker 1: where you set up. You said that this betting areas
- 18:06Speaker 1: on a point coming off of this island, and this
- 18:08Speaker 1: island is inside from the edge of the timber and
- 18:12Speaker 1: the swamp. So are you actually right on the edge
- 18:14Speaker 1: of that island north of it. Yes, let me explain
- 18:18Speaker 1: that a little more. So. This this island is on
- 18:21Speaker 1: the edge of the swamp okay, on the other side.
- 18:24Speaker 1: The swamp kind of narrows down on the one side.
- 18:27Speaker 1: And what what dear do is they'll come out of
- 18:30Speaker 1: the swamp or off that point of that island. They'll
- 18:33Speaker 1: come through the island, and then back behind me is
- 18:37Speaker 1: is his food is egg. So it's a very defined
- 18:42Speaker 1: traveler out from this island to the egg. Okay, they
- 18:46Speaker 1: can go through. They can go through the marsh where
- 18:48Speaker 1: I waited through, but it's knee deep water. They're not
- 18:50Speaker 1: going to do that unless they get spooped down there.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Pressure down there. Um, it's it's very distinct. So what
- 18:56Speaker 1: I do is I go right to the edge of
- 18:57Speaker 1: the island. I don't go onto the island. This island small.
- 19:00Speaker 1: I can cover the whole thing with my bow, and
- 19:03Speaker 1: I set right right up on the edge. Um it
- 19:08Speaker 1: just quietly set up on the edge. I got about
- 19:10Speaker 1: fifteen feet up. And you know, if he's there and
- 19:14Speaker 1: he comes out towards the food, I gotta crack at him.
- 19:18Speaker 1: You know. Within the first ten or fifteen feet that
- 19:21Speaker 1: he moves, probably yards, I'm sorry, ten or fifteen yards
- 19:23Speaker 1: that he moves. So how far do you think you
- 19:25Speaker 1: were from the bedded from the bed when you set up?
- 19:29Speaker 1: Probably seventy yards maybe, So this island is a little
- 19:35Speaker 1: bit higher. It dips down into more Martian like swampy area,
- 19:41Speaker 1: but the point kind of tapers down, so he's just
- 19:45Speaker 1: over a little rise and he's kind of down. The
- 19:48Speaker 1: winds blowing the marsh grass, the swamp grass, everything's blowing.
- 19:51Speaker 1: It's creating a fair bit of noise. I was able
- 19:53Speaker 1: to set up no problem. Um, you know, on a
- 19:57Speaker 1: calm day that might be a little trickier. I think
- 20:01Speaker 1: you could still do it if you're pretty good with
- 20:04Speaker 1: your equipment, but you just have to move slow and
- 20:06Speaker 1: try not to make any noise. So anyway, I got
- 20:10Speaker 1: set up without bumping him, and the night kind of progresses.
- 20:16Speaker 1: I see a few dolls way off, way off by
- 20:18Speaker 1: the by that other woods out in the out in
- 20:21Speaker 1: the field there, and it's looking like it's not gonna happen.
- 20:24Speaker 1: And then all of a sudden, I'm kind of glassing
- 20:26Speaker 1: down into that into that point, and I just see
- 20:29Speaker 1: kind of antler tips, so I know he's kind of
- 20:33Speaker 1: up and he's on his feet and he's moving. I'm like,
- 20:34Speaker 1: is at him. And then I see just he turns
- 20:38Speaker 1: the side and I just see this really incredible mass
- 20:40Speaker 1: and this deer is really massive. He's got great mass,
- 20:44Speaker 1: and I'm like, oh my gosh, it's him. So now
- 20:47Speaker 1: it's just a waiting game. The light is running out
- 20:50Speaker 1: very fast. When I first saw him, there was maybe
- 20:52Speaker 1: ten minutes of light left. And he's down there and
- 20:55Speaker 1: I just see the top half of his rack and
- 20:58Speaker 1: he's like put his head down own and I think, Okay,
- 21:00Speaker 1: here he comes. And then all of a sudden, I
- 21:02Speaker 1: see him put his head up and he's in the
- 21:04Speaker 1: same spot and he does this like like six or
- 21:07Speaker 1: seven times. I'm like, oh my God, like seriously, just come,
- 21:10Speaker 1: Like I know he's coming this way. But he's like waiting,
- 21:12Speaker 1: you know, he's waiting for like more security darkness or something,
- 21:16Speaker 1: or maybe he's just waiting to kind of get a
- 21:19Speaker 1: good whiff of whatever is around. But the wind stayed
- 21:21Speaker 1: pretty true. It's blowing me into a safe area and
- 21:26Speaker 1: I just need him to come before last shooting. Like,
- 21:29Speaker 1: so then he starts slowly making steps my way, like
- 21:33Speaker 1: a few steps coming. I'm getting the bowl ready, and
- 21:36Speaker 1: then he stands there for a few minutes and I'm like,
- 21:38Speaker 1: oh man, we're gonna run out of time here. And
- 21:41Speaker 1: then it's just it's those last couple of minutes of
- 21:43Speaker 1: daylight and all of a sudden, you know how like
- 21:47Speaker 1: you're watching a deer do this, and they're kind of
- 21:49Speaker 1: waiting and they're biding their time. They're wait until they
- 21:51Speaker 1: feel comfortable or feel like they they've scented the whole area,
- 21:55Speaker 1: and then they make that decision to come, and then
- 21:57Speaker 1: they come, and you know it, right, it's like, yeah,
- 22:01Speaker 1: it's like, okay, all, all is good, All's clear. Here
- 22:04Speaker 1: I go, you know, like I feel, I feel comfortable.
- 22:06Speaker 1: And then he made that. I could see it. I
- 22:08Speaker 1: can see his body and his demeanor change, and here
- 22:11Speaker 1: he comes, and he's coming. So he's coming across that island, heading,
- 22:16Speaker 1: you know, right through the middle of it, basically right
- 22:18Speaker 1: towards you know, where all the food is. And he's
- 22:22Speaker 1: coming right at me and I'm set up in the saddle.
- 22:24Speaker 1: I'm set up in this big tree, um pretty pretty
- 22:27Speaker 1: large tree, and so I'm on the opposite side of it.
- 22:30Speaker 1: So I'm peeking around to the left where I can
- 22:34Speaker 1: see him coming, and he's coming right at me. I
- 22:38Speaker 1: was hoping he'd come more like off the side, you know,
- 22:40Speaker 1: yards he's coming right towards my tree. And I'm like, okay,
- 22:44Speaker 1: this is gonna be you know, this is gonna be
- 22:46Speaker 1: a really really close shot. Now I know the SHOT's
- 22:49Speaker 1: gonna happen, and it's gonna be right under me, and
- 22:51Speaker 1: it's gonna be very close. So I leaned back to
- 22:54Speaker 1: the right so that the big tree is directly between
- 22:57Speaker 1: him and I, and he's already within fifteen yards of
- 23:00Speaker 1: me and walking, and I come to full draw behind
- 23:04Speaker 1: the big tree, which was a huge advantage to have
- 23:08Speaker 1: the saddle in this situation. UM. Unless I had a
- 23:12Speaker 1: tree stand facing the opposite way of the deer, which
- 23:14Speaker 1: I probably wouldn't have done. In this case, I probably
- 23:17Speaker 1: would have been faced off to the right or face
- 23:20Speaker 1: directly at him. UM. It would have been really hard
- 23:23Speaker 1: to come to full draw because I wasn't that high.
- 23:25Speaker 1: I didn't want to get super duper high, um, because
- 23:28Speaker 1: the canopy wasn't real high. It was a little lower. UM.
- 23:33Speaker 1: But with the saddle, I was able to literally just
- 23:37Speaker 1: just kind of swing back behind the tree so that
- 23:39Speaker 1: the tree blocked me, blocked me from his vision, and
- 23:42Speaker 1: I came to full draw, and then I just slowly
- 23:45Speaker 1: swung back around and creeped around. By the time I
- 23:48Speaker 1: creeped back around, he was at five yards like right
- 23:51Speaker 1: under my tree, and he was he was quartering to
- 23:53Speaker 1: me just a little, and he was starting to smell around,
- 23:56Speaker 1: which I thought was incredible because he hadn't even crossed
- 23:59Speaker 1: my as yet. But he he wasn't locked up, but
- 24:02Speaker 1: he was like almost like he was sensing something. And
- 24:06Speaker 1: I was like, oh, man, like come on, Like I purposely,
- 24:10Speaker 1: I did have to walk through the center of uh
- 24:13Speaker 1: Like there's there's pretty much two trails that looked like
- 24:18Speaker 1: they were kind of coming out off through that island.
- 24:20Speaker 1: I did have to cross those trails to get to
- 24:23Speaker 1: the tree I was in because of the way I
- 24:25Speaker 1: was playing the wind, Do you get me? Okay? So,
- 24:29Speaker 1: but what I tried to do is I tried to
- 24:31Speaker 1: make sure I crossed them where I would already have
- 24:35Speaker 1: a shot at that deer beforehand, Like if he was
- 24:38Speaker 1: coming down those trails, i'd have a shot before he
- 24:40Speaker 1: would cross my boot trail. Is what what I tried
- 24:43Speaker 1: to do so, but he's he's starting to sniff, like
- 24:46Speaker 1: he smells me before he even gets to my track,
- 24:48Speaker 1: like like like ten ft before, and I'm like, oh
- 24:52Speaker 1: my gosh, is he's smelling, you know, like he's gonna
- 24:53Speaker 1: he's gonna bust. But I just was patient and I said,
- 24:58Speaker 1: I'm not gonna take that shot. He's according to Well,
- 25:00Speaker 1: then he just kind of slowly starts creeping forward. He
- 25:03Speaker 1: turns a little more broadside. I put the pin right,
- 25:06Speaker 1: you know, kind of high on his back. It's like
- 25:07Speaker 1: it's almost like a not straight down, but it's a
- 25:10Speaker 1: it's a steep angle shot. Not not ideal, but with broadside, um,
- 25:15Speaker 1: you know, it's not too bad. It's it's a lot
- 25:18Speaker 1: harder when they're right under the tree. A lot of
- 25:19Speaker 1: times you'll get that one long. But he was out
- 25:22Speaker 1: about five six yards and I could get just that angle.
- 25:26Speaker 1: If I go just into the spine, I'm gonna I'm
- 25:27Speaker 1: gonna get him good. So I put the pin there,
- 25:31Speaker 1: I shoot, and I see that the lighted knock berry
- 25:34Speaker 1: like up to the fletching and he takes off and
- 25:39Speaker 1: it was it was dark enough where I just you know,
- 25:45Speaker 1: it just wasn't sure. Like I said, I think that
- 25:48Speaker 1: shots great, but it was high, but it's supposed to
- 25:52Speaker 1: be high because of the angle right. So but it's
- 25:55Speaker 1: just like if he was out thirty yards and I
- 25:57Speaker 1: hit him there, i'd be a little worried, but he
- 26:00Speaker 1: was so close, so I felt I felt pretty good.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Text to my buddy Mike to come out and help me.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Um when he ran off, I did hear him go
- 26:07Speaker 1: through some brush, but then I didn't hear anything. I
- 26:09Speaker 1: didn't hear a crash or anything, and I was like, oh, man,
- 26:11Speaker 1: I should have heard a crash. Karen's starting to stress
- 26:14Speaker 1: out a little bit. And then long story shore, we
- 26:17Speaker 1: give him a couple of hours just to be safe.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Buddy shows up. We started walking out there and we
- 26:23Speaker 1: come around the dry side so we don't have to
- 26:24Speaker 1: wade through the water. I was like, let's you know,
- 26:26Speaker 1: we're not who cares if we bumped anything. Now, let's
- 26:28Speaker 1: just walk the dry side. And we come walking down
- 26:32Speaker 1: and we're kind of getting someone up close to, uh
- 26:36Speaker 1: where the shot happened, and I kind of looked to
- 26:39Speaker 1: my left. It's pitch dark. We don't even have any
- 26:41Speaker 1: lights on, and I go what's that Shine your light
- 26:43Speaker 1: over there? And he shines his light over there, and
- 26:46Speaker 1: he was laying dead right there. So he only went
- 26:49Speaker 1: he only went about sixty yards. It was a it
- 26:51Speaker 1: was a good double long shot, um. And we walked
- 26:55Speaker 1: up to him and he was he was even bigger
- 26:58Speaker 1: than what I thought he was, to be honest. You, um,
- 27:01Speaker 1: his mass in trail camp pictures and stuff, it's kind
- 27:04Speaker 1: of hard to identify mass. Like sometimes when you get
- 27:07Speaker 1: like a real palmated one, you know he's heavy, um,
- 27:11Speaker 1: but you couldn't really tell that with this book. Um.
- 27:13Speaker 1: But his his beans are just so heavy. That's the
- 27:15Speaker 1: best part about him. And the tall brown tens. His
- 27:17Speaker 1: brown times have had grown a lot from the year prior.
- 27:20Speaker 1: But he's super cool. Yeah. So so I did. Wasn't
- 27:24Speaker 1: trying to sound cocky or anything when I said I
- 27:26Speaker 1: think I got a good chance of this, dear. It's
- 27:28Speaker 1: it's because he showed up where he did in this area.
- 27:31Speaker 1: It's very clear, very distinct lines of travel, very straightforward
- 27:36Speaker 1: on how to hunt it. If you can stay out,
- 27:39Speaker 1: which a lot of people can't, you know, if they
- 27:41Speaker 1: you know, if they have trouble staying out until things
- 27:46Speaker 1: kind of heat up. You know, if I would have
- 27:47Speaker 1: been hunting that island and hunting this other spot before
- 27:51Speaker 1: he was there, before the activity picked up, probably wouldn't
- 27:54Speaker 1: have helped my cause. So tryl Camber played a big
- 27:59Speaker 1: role in this one. Really really interesting to hear how
- 28:02Speaker 1: you played it and how you you waited for the
- 28:05Speaker 1: right time, made the move, understood the property well enough
- 28:08Speaker 1: that you knew where those top spots were, and then
- 28:11Speaker 1: had the plan to go in one, two, three, And
- 28:14Speaker 1: that's cool. It was really cool to see it all
- 28:15Speaker 1: come together. When you texted me that morning, I was like, oh,
- 28:18Speaker 1: that buck better watch out, And sure enough, that's uh,
- 28:22Speaker 1: that's what the case was. So before, um, before, let's
- 28:27Speaker 1: go Andy. When this podcast drops, it's gonna be November
- 28:34Speaker 1: six or seven, so people will be you know, right
- 28:39Speaker 1: in the midst of it. Um, yeah, November seven. So
- 28:44Speaker 1: one or two quick, just rut hunting rules from Andy.
- 28:49Speaker 1: May your couple pieces of wisdom for people hunting this
- 28:52Speaker 1: next week or so? Sure? Yeah, Well, I'll start off
- 28:56Speaker 1: by saying this is this is probably my least favorite
- 28:59Speaker 1: time to hunt, uh, when I'm after a particular deer,
- 29:02Speaker 1: But if you're not after it's really hard to pattern
- 29:04Speaker 1: them down. Um, the movement's become much more kind of
- 29:09Speaker 1: all over the place. But if you're just looking for
- 29:12Speaker 1: a nice deer or any mature buck, it's it's a
- 29:16Speaker 1: great time. Um. I'll say this, my favorite areas typically
- 29:23Speaker 1: depending on where where I'm hunting, I like to be on.
- 29:26Speaker 1: I like to know where dog groups bed. Um. They
- 29:29Speaker 1: usually kind of stay pretty similar throughout the fall, and
- 29:32Speaker 1: I like to I like to play around the downwind
- 29:34Speaker 1: sides of those. I've had great luck with that, and
- 29:37Speaker 1: it's a great spot to sit all day, um at
- 29:40Speaker 1: least until um, at least until like that three o'clock
- 29:45Speaker 1: time frame. Okay, at least till then, because what happens
- 29:49Speaker 1: is those dolls will come back to bed sometimes. Uh
- 29:53Speaker 1: sometimes you'll get bucks kind of cruising that downward side
- 29:56Speaker 1: early in the morning. But about my favorite time during
- 29:59Speaker 1: the rut is like that mid morning, like that nine
- 30:02Speaker 1: o'clock to noon, UM, seems to be a really great
- 30:06Speaker 1: time for that that type of scenario. Um. Definitely, Um, definitely,
- 30:12Speaker 1: if you can on all day, if you're in that
- 30:15Speaker 1: type of situation, at least until three or four o'clock.
- 30:17Speaker 1: If if once the evening hours hit like that afternoon
- 30:22Speaker 1: if you want to move to something more maybe kind
- 30:25Speaker 1: of towards a food source or something where there's you
- 30:28Speaker 1: could kind of get into the cover a little bit.
- 30:29Speaker 1: But on the way to a food source, that's not
- 30:31Speaker 1: a bad idea. Um. The evening sits tend to be
- 30:35Speaker 1: a little slower on the downward sides of dope betting
- 30:38Speaker 1: area once the dolls start to leave. Um. So that's
- 30:42Speaker 1: that's one. UM. The other one I like is just
- 30:45Speaker 1: your your basic funnel between dough between dope betting areas.
- 30:49Speaker 1: So I see this a lot in like river bottom ground. Um,
- 30:52Speaker 1: sometimes you'll get it like in egg country where you
- 30:56Speaker 1: know you've got a wood lot here that holds deer
- 30:59Speaker 1: and and you've got a marsh here that holds deer,
- 31:02Speaker 1: and then there's some sort of strip of cover that
- 31:04Speaker 1: connects the two or maybe just two wood lots that
- 31:07Speaker 1: that typically hold dose. Um. Those are great spots. And
- 31:11Speaker 1: those are again great spots to sit all day at
- 31:14Speaker 1: least through that at least through that eleven to three
- 31:17Speaker 1: time frame I've I've killed. I can't tell you how
- 31:20Speaker 1: many big bucks I've killed. In mid day it's my
- 31:23Speaker 1: favorite time of day during the rut, and I've killed
- 31:26Speaker 1: some really old including my biggest. My my big one
- 31:28Speaker 1: seventy two was was that three in three in the afternoon,
- 31:32Speaker 1: so maybe not exactly mid day, but still plenty early um,
- 31:36Speaker 1: but a lot in that eleven to two range. UM.
- 31:39Speaker 1: I really like that time frame. And if you're if
- 31:41Speaker 1: you're hunting either of those spots, definitely sit through that
- 31:43Speaker 1: time frame. You can sit there the rest of the night, um,
- 31:47Speaker 1: but you might be better off moving towards something a
- 31:50Speaker 1: little more related to food for that afternoon. I don't
- 31:54Speaker 1: always do that. Sometimes I camp out all day because
- 31:56Speaker 1: I really don't like leaving and then moving in um
- 32:01Speaker 1: to a new new spot. But I will do that
- 32:03Speaker 1: if I don't think the evening is going to be productive. UM.
- 32:05Speaker 1: And then another tip is you're going to start to
- 32:08Speaker 1: see the big mature box. A lot of times you'll
- 32:11Speaker 1: see them for the first time and they're gonna be
- 32:13Speaker 1: locked down with a dough. UM. They usually pick up
- 32:17Speaker 1: the first dough or two that's in heat. When you
- 32:20Speaker 1: see that, you have a short window. You have anywhere
- 32:24Speaker 1: from like a depending on when you first see him.
- 32:27Speaker 1: If he did, he just just lock up with that
- 32:30Speaker 1: dough or has he been with her for a day?
- 32:32Speaker 1: He usually got like one, two, at the very most
- 32:37Speaker 1: three days that he's gonna be with that dough, and
- 32:40Speaker 1: you can almost count that he's going to be in
- 32:42Speaker 1: that area. Okay, So what what I've had good luck
- 32:45Speaker 1: with doing is when I see that, I usually a
- 32:48Speaker 1: lot of times will get out of the tree and
- 32:50Speaker 1: I will move closer and I will set up as
- 32:54Speaker 1: close as possible um to where that action is. And
- 32:57Speaker 1: if you can if it's a scenario where you can
- 32:59Speaker 1: see and observe like um CRP type ground or marsh
- 33:04Speaker 1: type ground or or you know, kind of scrub brush,
- 33:07Speaker 1: that's all the better because then you'll be able to
- 33:09Speaker 1: see this buck kind of pushing this dough around, or
- 33:11Speaker 1: the dough kind of moving around naturally, and he's just
- 33:13Speaker 1: following her, and he he's occupied. This is your time
- 33:16Speaker 1: to dive in if you want that particular deer to
- 33:19Speaker 1: get in tight. And I've been really aggressive when I
- 33:22Speaker 1: see him locked down like that, and I'm able to
- 33:24Speaker 1: get in really close within a hundred yards sometimes closer,
- 33:28Speaker 1: and then and then it's just a matter of like
- 33:30Speaker 1: waiting for him to make a mistake, waiting for that
- 33:32Speaker 1: dough to come a little closer, or when they're preoccupied
- 33:34Speaker 1: looking away, you can sneak in and crawling a little closer.
- 33:38Speaker 1: That this is another good, good dog, you know, plugged
- 33:41Speaker 1: for a saddle. UM. You know, if you have something
- 33:44Speaker 1: to get up in a tree and you're wearing that saddle,
- 33:47Speaker 1: that's perfect tool in that type of scenario. But if
- 33:50Speaker 1: you see that and you're sitting two hundred yards away,
- 33:54Speaker 1: get down and move closer if you can, if you
- 33:56Speaker 1: have that ability to stay mobile, um, And it's a
- 33:59Speaker 1: very very re least move into that area the next
- 34:02Speaker 1: day and and you're in the game. They're gonna be
- 34:05Speaker 1: in that area that that that buck will not let
- 34:08Speaker 1: that dough go too far. And the only way I've seen, um,
- 34:13Speaker 1: when one's locked down with a dough. The only time
- 34:15Speaker 1: I've seen a buck move an area like more than
- 34:20Speaker 1: like two or three hundred yards is when another buck
- 34:24Speaker 1: comes in and tries to tries to, you know, interfere
- 34:28Speaker 1: with that that breeding process. That buck, the big buck,
- 34:31Speaker 1: the more mature buck will meet and and chase that
- 34:35Speaker 1: other buck off, and then I've seen the dough take off.
- 34:38Speaker 1: So I've seen the dough take off like two three
- 34:40Speaker 1: yards and and now they're in a different area. But
- 34:43Speaker 1: that's I've seen that happen multiple times. I saw that
- 34:46Speaker 1: in Iowa on a big buck um that I end
- 34:48Speaker 1: up shooting. Luckily, this other buck came across the crp
- 34:52Speaker 1: faield the buck I was hunting challenge that buck. The
- 34:55Speaker 1: doe came running right by me. And then once that
- 34:58Speaker 1: buck chase that I went off, he came. He came
- 35:01Speaker 1: right by me and I got a shot. So nice
- 35:03Speaker 1: when that happens. Yeah, those are those are probably some
- 35:05Speaker 1: tips that I'd try to keep in mind, you know
- 35:08Speaker 1: during the rut and you know, just putting a lot
- 35:10Speaker 1: of times it's just putting in time out in the tree,
- 35:12Speaker 1: you know. Don't overlook that that midday time frame. Yeah,
- 35:16Speaker 1: good stuff, my friend, good stuff. I appreciate you taking
- 35:19Speaker 1: a little time to help us introduce this episode with
- 35:22Speaker 1: your story and some quick tips. Um. At this point
- 35:26Speaker 1: we're recordings on Halloween, so about a week before this
- 35:29Speaker 1: podcast will go out. I still haven't had my rut success,
- 35:32Speaker 1: but hope they'll change here soon and uh maybe we'll
- 35:36Speaker 1: be able to chat again here with a couple more
- 35:37Speaker 1: success stories in the in a matter of days. Al right, buddy,
- 35:41Speaker 1: sounds good. All right, We're gonna now flip it over
- 35:43Speaker 1: to my chat with Travis Faulkner with a whole lot
- 35:47Speaker 1: more rut hunting info and stick around for a deer
- 35:51Speaker 1: hunting joke at the end. It's worth the weight, all right.
- 35:55Speaker 1: Before moving on that, we need to thank our friends
- 35:57Speaker 1: over at first light. And I'm out there hunting the
- 35:59Speaker 1: white right now. And here's what I'm wearing. I'm wearing
- 36:03Speaker 1: a couple different sets of their bass layers, depending on
- 36:06Speaker 1: how cold it is. It's really cold and wearing their furnace.
- 36:09Speaker 1: That's three fifty level bass layers. If it's warmer and
- 36:12Speaker 1: running there one fifty or two fifty layer bass layers.
- 36:15Speaker 1: Then on the bottoms. The next thing I add would
- 36:17Speaker 1: be straight to the main piece, which is these Solitude bibs.
- 36:21Speaker 1: On the top. I'm gonna be wearing those bass layers.
- 36:23Speaker 1: I just mentioned that them to throw on top the
- 36:25Speaker 1: claymath hoodie. If it's super duper cold, they might layer
- 36:28Speaker 1: a vest or something like the Brooks jacket, which is
- 36:32Speaker 1: a really lightweight down sweater. And then finally overtop is
- 36:36Speaker 1: going to be the Solitude jacket. Uh. And of course
- 36:39Speaker 1: gonna throw in a beanie, some gloves, and I'm ready
- 36:41Speaker 1: to rock and roll. If you want to learn more
- 36:43Speaker 1: about that system or any other stuff out there that
- 36:45Speaker 1: first Lay has to offer, you can go to first
- 36:48Speaker 1: Light dot com. And while we're at it, also want
- 36:52Speaker 1: to thank Lacrosse and I've been telling you about the
- 36:54Speaker 1: new Navigator series, their new lace up boots. I've been
- 36:57Speaker 1: testing them for the last I don't know, three weeks now.
- 37:00Speaker 1: I took him on that Minnesota Boundary waters hunt. That
- 37:02Speaker 1: was my main boot and it worked great. I mean,
- 37:05Speaker 1: that was the ideal type of boot to have for
- 37:07Speaker 1: that hunt because I wanted something super comfortable for hiking
- 37:10Speaker 1: all over the place. We're going up and down these
- 37:12Speaker 1: big rocky ridges, hiking all over the place. They're comfortable.
- 37:16Speaker 1: They were waterproof when I had to get in and
- 37:18Speaker 1: out of the canoe and uh, I have no complaints.
- 37:21Speaker 1: So check out the wind rows by Lacrosse. That's when
- 37:24Speaker 1: I was running and two thumbs up. All right with me?
- 37:28Speaker 1: Now on the line is Travis Fultoner. Welcome to the show. Travis.
- 37:32Speaker 1: It's good to be here. I really appreciate it. Like
- 37:35Speaker 1: we were just saying before we started recording, This is
- 37:38Speaker 1: a real busy time for folks, so I know it's
- 37:40Speaker 1: no small thing to carve out the time out of
- 37:42Speaker 1: the tree stand to chat. So thanks. Yeah, it's like
- 37:45Speaker 1: I said, it's time of being the woods and not
- 37:46Speaker 1: on the phone. But you know, we'd like to take
- 37:50Speaker 1: Tom too a little deer on soil. You know, we're
- 37:52Speaker 1: good to go on that good. Well, for all those
- 37:55Speaker 1: that maybe aren't familiar with who you are yet, could
- 37:57Speaker 1: you give us just a quick cliff notes in row
- 38:00Speaker 1: on who you are what you do in the hunting world. Yeah,
- 38:04Speaker 1: I'm Travis Father. I'm an outdoor rider. Um, I also
- 38:07Speaker 1: teach school and and don't I can't remember while I've
- 38:11Speaker 1: been riding for that dooor maybe the stuff I write
- 38:13Speaker 1: for a little bit of everybody like Outdoor Life and
- 38:15Speaker 1: Film Stream, North American Light, Tell Turkey Country magazines like that,
- 38:20Speaker 1: and uh. I grew up in the mountains of southeastern
- 38:23Speaker 1: Kentucky Appalachian Mountains, and you know, like most boys right here,
- 38:27Speaker 1: I grew up in you know, in the outdoors. My dad,
- 38:30Speaker 1: you know, practically carried me round in the woods before
- 38:32Speaker 1: I was even able to walk, you know, on squirrel
- 38:34Speaker 1: hunts and stuff. And I was fortunate enough to know
- 38:37Speaker 1: my grandfather growing up. And you know, those two guys
- 38:40Speaker 1: are not only taught me a lot, you know in
- 38:41Speaker 1: the woods, they taught me a lot, you know, about life,
- 38:44Speaker 1: you know, through taking me hunt and fishing and whatnot.
- 38:48Speaker 1: And uh, I've just pretty much lived my life you know,
- 38:50Speaker 1: in the woods and on the lake and and uh,
- 38:53Speaker 1: you know, fortunately I was able to you know, kind
- 38:55Speaker 1: of make a career out of my riding and stuff
- 38:57Speaker 1: and you know, making appearances on shows on that door channel,
- 39:01Speaker 1: shoot the videos and stuff like that. You know, that's
- 39:03Speaker 1: when it's want live to do. Yeah, it's it's a
- 39:05Speaker 1: it's a real fulfilling and fun way to make a living,
- 39:09Speaker 1: that's for sure. It doesn't feel like we're that's pretty
- 39:14Speaker 1: lucky to be able to do it, that's for sure. Um.
- 39:17Speaker 1: You mentioned squirrel hunting, and I was actually just reading
- 39:20Speaker 1: a pretty recent piece of years and you were talking
- 39:23Speaker 1: about maybe it was your dad or some other friend
- 39:26Speaker 1: of yours who said that the best way to get
- 39:28Speaker 1: good at deer hunting is to be a squirrel hunter.
- 39:31Speaker 1: I'll tell you my dad and my grandfather said that,
- 39:34Speaker 1: and also Harold lied or not Hal you know, told
- 39:38Speaker 1: me they don't lainew many times he said, you know,
- 39:40Speaker 1: if you shuns pretty much the foundation and sad thing
- 39:44Speaker 1: today is a lot of kids are it's out well
- 39:46Speaker 1: necessarily sad, but a lot of kids just jump out
- 39:48Speaker 1: into the deer hunting in Turkey on him because the
- 39:50Speaker 1: deer and turkeys so plentiful now, whereas you know, when
- 39:53Speaker 1: I was a kid and from the older generations when
- 39:55Speaker 1: they were growing up, there just weren't a lot of
- 39:57Speaker 1: deer and the zero turkey's. So we you know, we
- 40:01Speaker 1: squirrel hunted and rabbit hunted and and of course with
- 40:04Speaker 1: deer hunted back then. But there was a roll of
- 40:06Speaker 1: the difference between now and then, you know, back in
- 40:08Speaker 1: those days. If if you've seen it though you were
- 40:12Speaker 1: calling your friend, you know, tell them about if you've
- 40:14Speaker 1: seen tracks. I mean, you just have the numbers that
- 40:16Speaker 1: we have today and and that's um, it's kind of
- 40:19Speaker 1: a good and a bad thing. The good thing about
- 40:21Speaker 1: that is is there are fewer deer and whatnot. You
- 40:23Speaker 1: really had You really had to know your stuff. You
- 40:26Speaker 1: had to be able to scout and and and know
- 40:29Speaker 1: what to do and be able to find sign. I
- 40:31Speaker 1: know how to react to that sign and and uh,
- 40:33Speaker 1: you know, it really made you a better deer hunter.
- 40:35Speaker 1: But going back to the squirrelling poor, I mean, I
- 40:38Speaker 1: I strongly believe with those guys that you know, scoure
- 40:41Speaker 1: hunting is the foundation, because that's where you you learn
- 40:43Speaker 1: your woodmanship skills out. You know how to identify the
- 40:46Speaker 1: different masteries, how to be quiet, how to dis preen
- 40:50Speaker 1: your surroundings, reading an animal's body language, reading sign uh
- 40:54Speaker 1: sneaking through the woods, all that stuff you know you
- 40:56Speaker 1: learn from squirrel hunting. Yeah, I was one of those
- 41:00Speaker 1: kids who didn't get into squirrel hunting. I wish I had.
- 41:03Speaker 1: I shot squirrels, but it was kind of you know,
- 41:05Speaker 1: sitting behind the house and you want to shoot something
- 41:07Speaker 1: as a kid. And I did that, but I never
- 41:09Speaker 1: took it serious. And I wish I had. UM probably
- 41:12Speaker 1: have learned a few important things earlier than I did.
- 41:15Speaker 1: Um that woodsman shipped, like you said, is is pretty
- 41:18Speaker 1: underrated these days, isn't it. Yeah, it's it's underrated. I mean,
- 41:21Speaker 1: you know a lot of people you only watched the
- 41:23Speaker 1: TV and I see a guy in uh, you know,
- 41:25Speaker 1: it's over manicured food plot and in a shooting the
- 41:28Speaker 1: else and and you know it was rand astrail cameras
- 41:31Speaker 1: or he's had a guy. So you know, eight thirty,
- 41:33Speaker 1: there's gonna be uh, you know, one forty class one
- 41:36Speaker 1: class book come out, you know, from the east and
- 41:38Speaker 1: the end of the field and and all that's great.
- 41:41Speaker 1: I mean, I'm you know, definitely, I definitely not cutting
- 41:43Speaker 1: over food pots stuff like too. But growing up here
- 41:45Speaker 1: in the mountains, we didn't we don't have a lot
- 41:47Speaker 1: of food plots or fields, and you just had miles
- 41:49Speaker 1: and miles and miles of woods. And that really made you,
- 41:53Speaker 1: like I said, you had to have your woodness ship
- 41:55Speaker 1: skills on the on the next level, you know, to
- 41:57Speaker 1: get to where you had the opportunity even you know,
- 41:59Speaker 1: see if very much less shoot one. So it's you know,
- 42:02Speaker 1: it's a lot, it's a it's a lot different. You know,
- 42:04Speaker 1: hunt around here and stuff. And I squir hunting, you know,
- 42:07Speaker 1: without a doubt, maybe a better you know, all around hunter,
- 42:10Speaker 1: maybe a better deer hunter and a better turkey hunter.
- 42:13Speaker 1: And um, you know, growing up, like I said, I
- 42:16Speaker 1: hunted my pappa, my dad and my uncle's and we
- 42:19Speaker 1: used to go to beat each other at squirrel one.
- 42:21Speaker 1: I mean it was you know, we love the hunt part,
- 42:24Speaker 1: but we also like to get back of the truck
- 42:26Speaker 1: and swapping stories and see who killed the most. And
- 42:29Speaker 1: we usually used bolt Action twenty two with scopes and
- 42:32Speaker 1: we try to head shoot, and we wouldn't even count
- 42:34Speaker 1: the squirrel, you know, unless it was head shot. So
- 42:36Speaker 1: if you brought back six squirrels and only four of
- 42:39Speaker 1: them are head shot, you know you only killed four
- 42:41Speaker 1: and so forth. But it and and that's no thing.
- 42:43Speaker 1: You had to really pick your shots. You have to
- 42:45Speaker 1: be able to snake and and uh um, squirrel hunting.
- 42:49Speaker 1: I mean, I think a lot of people that didn't
- 42:51Speaker 1: grow up like I did doing it, they've got a
- 42:54Speaker 1: long impression about what you know, what it is. I mean,
- 42:57Speaker 1: you know, you when you're in a deer stand, it
- 42:58Speaker 1: seemed like the squirrels where ever, or I mean, they're
- 43:00Speaker 1: they're running up the tree besides you there, you know
- 43:03Speaker 1: before on the all time you sometimes you think they
- 43:05Speaker 1: might be dear and that the squirrels are running. Everybody think, man,
- 43:08Speaker 1: if I you know, if I was scrowling, you know,
- 43:09Speaker 1: the scrowling stuff is easy. But if you scure hunt,
- 43:12Speaker 1: you know, pressured areas, the squirrel has been hunting and stuff.
- 43:15Speaker 1: I mean, you've gotta be able to snake, you'll be
- 43:16Speaker 1: able to move through the woods. And and the way
- 43:18Speaker 1: we always did it, we didn't just go out and
- 43:21Speaker 1: flat then under a hcornut tree that had cuttings under
- 43:23Speaker 1: and you know, wait for the squirrel that you know
- 43:24Speaker 1: come to us. We would move through the woods, you
- 43:27Speaker 1: know where you have to be able to snake and
- 43:29Speaker 1: and and identify the different trees and nowhere to go
- 43:33Speaker 1: and all that kind of stuff. You know, look up
- 43:35Speaker 1: at their rising and you can see if the little
- 43:36Speaker 1: branch go down and back up, you knew that was
- 43:38Speaker 1: a squirrel. You could identify that even if it was
- 43:40Speaker 1: windy and stuff. And um as far as like like
- 43:43Speaker 1: I said, we've talked with rifles and and a lot
- 43:45Speaker 1: of times you'd come up on like a beech nut
- 43:47Speaker 1: tree or acrenut tree or wide oak tree and then
- 43:50Speaker 1: have multiple squirrels in it. And you know, guys that
- 43:54Speaker 1: aren't experienced squirrel hunters were just ease up there and
- 43:57Speaker 1: shoot the first squirrel they got a good shot at
- 43:59Speaker 1: and you can kill it that way. But the way
- 44:01Speaker 1: we would do it is we would cherry pick the
- 44:04Speaker 1: tree and what I mean by that is if the
- 44:06Speaker 1: if the tree had six squirrels in it and they
- 44:08Speaker 1: were spread out on tree cut and uh, we would
- 44:11Speaker 1: get in position to shoot where we could see most
- 44:13Speaker 1: of the tree and would get a lane and you
- 44:16Speaker 1: would you would shoot the squirrels lower down and work
- 44:18Speaker 1: your way up and you put space in between your shots.
- 44:21Speaker 1: And um, if you would do that, you could end
- 44:24Speaker 1: up killing five if the squirl has and it's the
- 44:26Speaker 1: tree at five or six worlds, you could kill up
- 44:28Speaker 1: to five and possibly even six worlds if you did
- 44:29Speaker 1: it right. And the reason why you start the bottom.
- 44:32Speaker 1: You know, if you shot one out the top and
- 44:34Speaker 1: it fell through the other ones that were in the tree,
- 44:36Speaker 1: you know eating, they would they would see that, they
- 44:38Speaker 1: would get spooked. But if you shoot the lower ones
- 44:41Speaker 1: out and and uh, you know, put some time in
- 44:43Speaker 1: between your shots and wait a lot of times when
- 44:45Speaker 1: the first shot, even with the rife, we know they
- 44:47Speaker 1: stopped cutting, like you know what was that If you
- 44:49Speaker 1: don't let they're looking around or being wary and and
- 44:52Speaker 1: if you don't move and don't do anything sooner or
- 44:54Speaker 1: later want to get greeting start you know, cut of
- 44:56Speaker 1: hiccornut again and drop a little bit of another, so
- 44:58Speaker 1: well it must be fine that one, and so I'm
- 45:00Speaker 1: will start eating and they don't start eating again, and
- 45:02Speaker 1: you pick another one out and you could, like I said,
- 45:04Speaker 1: you could put some space in between the shots and
- 45:05Speaker 1: you could clean out an entire toree. And you know
- 45:09Speaker 1: that's that was the wordsmanship skilled part of it. And um,
- 45:12Speaker 1: today a lot of it seems like a lot of
- 45:14Speaker 1: hunters to get away from, you know, from the wordsmanship skills,
- 45:16Speaker 1: which is which is kind of silly. Yeah, it's interesting
- 45:19Speaker 1: that that that idea of working the tree like that.
- 45:22Speaker 1: It's sounds just like, uh, you know, I've been getting
- 45:25Speaker 1: the fly fish in the last half decade or something
- 45:27Speaker 1: the same thing, like work in a pool and start
- 45:29Speaker 1: at the back and work your way out because they're
- 45:31Speaker 1: facing upstream. Um, that's pretty interesting. You talked about how
- 45:36Speaker 1: when you're deer hunting, it feels like squirrel hunting should
- 45:38Speaker 1: be easy, you know, because you're seeing all over the place.
- 45:40Speaker 1: I feel like we get the same thing as deer hunters.
- 45:42Speaker 1: When you talked to a friend or family member who
- 45:44Speaker 1: doesn't deer hunt, and they're like, while you're out there
- 45:46Speaker 1: all the time, it seems so easy. I seen when
- 45:48Speaker 1: I drive to work every day, Right, I hate that. Yeah,
- 45:52Speaker 1: I think they could be. And a lot the start
- 45:53Speaker 1: of that one as a brother law or somebody was
- 45:55Speaker 1: a deer hunter and he's talking how lucid they were
- 45:58Speaker 1: and all that kind of stuff and and wrong kind
- 46:00Speaker 1: of making fun because he didn't deer and the other
- 46:02Speaker 1: real lousive. You know, I've got head bites on and
- 46:03Speaker 1: blowing the horn and up doing up hitting one. But
- 46:06Speaker 1: it's it's a whole different ball game when you're you know,
- 46:08Speaker 1: in the in their environment and you know a lot
- 46:11Speaker 1: of people go like the state parks and stuff, and
- 46:13Speaker 1: I'll see the deer and the deer little walk right,
- 46:15Speaker 1: bim and whatnot, and you know, and they'll feed, but
- 46:18Speaker 1: you know, sometimes find up somebody's hand and stuff. They think,
- 46:20Speaker 1: Manda's this deer and it's not hard at all. And
- 46:23Speaker 1: I'm thinking, yeah, i'll tell you what comes in in
- 46:25Speaker 1: the mountains with me after about the first week a
- 46:27Speaker 1: gun season and and talk to me about how easy
- 46:30Speaker 1: it is. It's a different different worlds and they're like,
- 46:33Speaker 1: you're in their environment. They've been hunted before. Yeah, a
- 46:35Speaker 1: whole different story. So speaking of that, then when this
- 46:40Speaker 1: episode is going to drop for the world to here,
- 46:43Speaker 1: it's gonna be smack dab in the middle of what
- 46:46Speaker 1: probably most people consider to be the best hunting of
- 46:48Speaker 1: the entire year, right in the middle of that first
- 46:51Speaker 1: two weeks in November. Um, that period is still ahead
- 46:54Speaker 1: of you and me right now as we talk, though,
- 46:56Speaker 1: So what are you going to be doing over the
- 47:00Speaker 1: next couple of weeks? What's your what's your planet? You
- 47:03Speaker 1: hunt at home and you're traveling? What are you got
- 47:05Speaker 1: in the store? I live in, like I said, in
- 47:09Speaker 1: south east Katucky, round in Tennessee, Kentucky one and um
- 47:12Speaker 1: Kentucky and Tennessee. And I'm gonna go up to Ohio
- 47:15Speaker 1: this year, and I gotta try up. There'st got some
- 47:17Speaker 1: proper people will go on in southern Ohio and think
- 47:21Speaker 1: about may possibly even going to uh southern Indiana, depending
- 47:24Speaker 1: on you know, how the other states and stuff go.
- 47:27Speaker 1: But you know, from now till January, I'm planning on
- 47:29Speaker 1: being in the woods as much as as much as
- 47:31Speaker 1: possible and as um farther rutting stuff goes. I think,
- 47:37Speaker 1: you know, there's a you know, the myths of you
- 47:40Speaker 1: know that Big Bucks just lose their minds and they're
- 47:42Speaker 1: out just chasing and then you know they're they're running
- 47:45Speaker 1: around everywhere. You know, there's a little bit of truth
- 47:47Speaker 1: to that, but I think sometimes people get uh, you know,
- 47:51Speaker 1: uh kind of a false idea about what what that entails.
- 47:54Speaker 1: You know, you're not just gonna flop out in the
- 47:56Speaker 1: woods and sit down and you know a monster buck
- 47:58Speaker 1: run right over top of you. And sometimes that does
- 48:01Speaker 1: happen on them. You always show the story about the
- 48:03Speaker 1: guy that hadn't scouted all years, didn't even want, you know,
- 48:06Speaker 1: the plan on hunting, and and well and caused all
- 48:08Speaker 1: his buddies decidety was gonna go go that and borrows
- 48:10Speaker 1: the gun or buy the gun at Walmart the night before,
- 48:13Speaker 1: you know, and just and and sitting out there and
- 48:16Speaker 1: and and I just dropped him off anywhere. And he's
- 48:18Speaker 1: sitting out there and gets board, walks around or scientistical
- 48:21Speaker 1: back to the truck, you know, the warm up or
- 48:23Speaker 1: something and ends up shooting a boon a truck at buck.
- 48:26Speaker 1: And yeah, you know that that can happen, you know,
- 48:28Speaker 1: because there's a lot of factors. You know, they're big
- 48:30Speaker 1: bucks are definitely on the moves. You're seeing more daytime activity.
- 48:32Speaker 1: And then you've got the hunt pressure in the woods,
- 48:34Speaker 1: which is, you know, bucks that are normally nocturnal can
- 48:37Speaker 1: get bumped and jumped and ran right over top of somebody,
- 48:40Speaker 1: you know, and and that does happen. But that, you know,
- 48:44Speaker 1: is pretty much luck. And I'll take luck, don't get
- 48:46Speaker 1: me wrong. But if you want to be consistent, you know,
- 48:49Speaker 1: you've got to be able to you gonna have some
- 48:51Speaker 1: strategies and tactics, you know, for hunting or run. You
- 48:53Speaker 1: can't just go out there and hope for the best.
- 48:55Speaker 1: And you know, like buying a lottery ticket, you know
- 48:56Speaker 1: you can't. You can't have that mentality that will get
- 48:59Speaker 1: your buck right now and then where if you do
- 49:01Speaker 1: it the right way, you know you can you can
- 49:02Speaker 1: get bucks season after seasons or in the rut. Yeah,
- 49:05Speaker 1: so would that be in the case then when your
- 49:08Speaker 1: rut hunts kick off here maybe today or soon in
- 49:11Speaker 1: the next few days or whatever it is. Um, what
- 49:14Speaker 1: do you what does that look like for you? Do
- 49:16Speaker 1: you go in and you know, are you thinking just
- 49:19Speaker 1: basically a right, I've got this property and hunting, and
- 49:21Speaker 1: I have got this many spots set up for certain
- 49:23Speaker 1: wind directions and you're just gonna check the wind and
- 49:25Speaker 1: do it or or what's on your mind right now
- 49:28Speaker 1: leading up to these next couple hunts. Well, I'm a
- 49:31Speaker 1: firm believer in um uh, you know, there's there's transitional
- 49:34Speaker 1: phases of the rut, and how you have the rut
- 49:37Speaker 1: depends on what transit, you know, what current transition that
- 49:40Speaker 1: you're in, and what the deer doing. And um, you know,
- 49:43Speaker 1: some guys go out there and they find some you know,
- 49:45Speaker 1: fresh scrapes and rugs and some hot sign and they
- 49:48Speaker 1: throw a stand up or pop up the blind and
- 49:49Speaker 1: that's where they're gonna hunt. And sometimes that works. Um,
- 49:54Speaker 1: but I've learned, you know, over the years, I've kind
- 49:56Speaker 1: of find two my tactics, you know, to meet each
- 49:58Speaker 1: transitional phase, you know, activities going on like right now,
- 50:02Speaker 1: I rank cameras this morning before I before I was
- 50:06Speaker 1: talking to you here, and and um, I've seen, you know,
- 50:10Speaker 1: we're going in. I've seen some scrapes that weren't there,
- 50:12Speaker 1: you know a week ago, you know, with scrapes and
- 50:14Speaker 1: rubs are starting to pop up and everything and and
- 50:17Speaker 1: it's like I said, a good time to be in
- 50:18Speaker 1: the woods. And what's going on right now, and its
- 50:20Speaker 1: particular transitions what I call the it's the scouting and
- 50:23Speaker 1: roaming stage. And what I mean by that is the
- 50:27Speaker 1: mature bucks that are gonna be doing a lot of breeding.
- 50:29Speaker 1: What they're doing right now, you know, they're obviously their
- 50:31Speaker 1: territorial they're they're scraping, and they're rubbing, they're doing all that.
- 50:35Speaker 1: But what they're doing and I've got like on one property,
- 50:37Speaker 1: I've probably got um one of the locations on mine
- 50:40Speaker 1: probably right now, I've got ten cameras out. And when
- 50:43Speaker 1: I'm starting to see and I see this every year,
- 50:45Speaker 1: it's about this time of year here in southeast Kentucky,
- 50:48Speaker 1: what the bucks are doing. They're out scouting for those
- 50:51Speaker 1: and when I'm they're going to the dough hotspots, are
- 50:54Speaker 1: going to, you know, dough betting areas, dough feeding areas,
- 50:58Speaker 1: the dough travel routes, that kind of stuff, and they're
- 51:01Speaker 1: scouting when those dolls are at and when they find
- 51:04Speaker 1: a hotspot place like that, they are usually they're gonna
- 51:06Speaker 1: leave a big scrape. You know, they're gonna make some rubs,
- 51:08Speaker 1: are gonna leave a scrape, and they're letting those does
- 51:09Speaker 1: know that, Hey, you know I'm here, and they'll also
- 51:12Speaker 1: go you routinually go through and check those and the
- 51:14Speaker 1: dolls will go in and urinated and let them know
- 51:16Speaker 1: that they're there even when they're not in hete. I mean,
- 51:17Speaker 1: I've got I've got video and pictures right now of
- 51:20Speaker 1: those urinate and you know, in in the scrape and
- 51:23Speaker 1: some of the mock scrapes that I've made that you know,
- 51:26Speaker 1: they're not in heat, you know, by no means, but
- 51:28Speaker 1: they're just letting another you know that they're there. And
- 51:30Speaker 1: there's I've got young bucks, you know, coming up and
- 51:33Speaker 1: working you know, established scrapes and mock scrapes that I've maink.
- 51:37Speaker 1: But while I talk about the scouting and roaming, we
- 51:40Speaker 1: had one buck that um about two weeks ago. He
- 51:44Speaker 1: was in a you know, a textbook feeding the bedding
- 51:46Speaker 1: pattern and um, in Kentucky you can put out corn
- 51:49Speaker 1: and you know, apples and stuff like that. It's legal
- 51:51Speaker 1: to put that out here during deer season. And uh,
- 51:54Speaker 1: there's a ton of acrons this year. And I had
- 51:57Speaker 1: a spot that's down in the hollars, you know how
- 51:59Speaker 1: the in and there's a lot of white oak and
- 52:01Speaker 1: red oak and pin oak trees. And and how Sybio
- 52:05Speaker 1: had some corn and stuff like that and had a
- 52:06Speaker 1: camera over the feed and we had this deer coming
- 52:08Speaker 1: in you know sometimes you know, right after dark, sometimes
- 52:11Speaker 1: the middle and I you know are sometimes before we
- 52:14Speaker 1: went back to bed and and every now and you
- 52:16Speaker 1: had a little bit of daytime activity from it. But
- 52:18Speaker 1: he was mainly feeding in bed. He's what he was doing.
- 52:20Speaker 1: And about a week ago I started we started put
- 52:23Speaker 1: that some mork scrapes and stuff on other cameras on
- 52:26Speaker 1: this same property, and he was a good mile a
- 52:29Speaker 1: half two miles from where we've been getting and uh,
- 52:32Speaker 1: working on mark scrapes. And we had another mark scrape
- 52:35Speaker 1: probably about a mile a half from there, and he
- 52:36Speaker 1: was on it the same day, like two hours later,
- 52:39Speaker 1: he was on it. And what he's doing is he's
- 52:42Speaker 1: going around in those areas, he's working scrapes. He's letting
- 52:45Speaker 1: those know he's there, and he's getting an idea where
- 52:47Speaker 1: the those are gonna be at because he knows this.
- 52:49Speaker 1: This isn't his first rodeo. You know, he's a veteran.
- 52:51Speaker 1: He's probably a five or six year old buck, and uh,
- 52:54Speaker 1: he knows that when the dose start coming into ansters.
- 52:58Speaker 1: He's know whether they're going to be at and he'll
- 53:00Speaker 1: make a milk run. And what I mean by that,
- 53:02Speaker 1: he'll go to each spot, sit check and looking for
- 53:05Speaker 1: those you know in those areas, and they'll go the
- 53:07Speaker 1: next spot. He'll go the next spot till he finds one.
- 53:10Speaker 1: And he finds one, he'll try to lock it down
- 53:12Speaker 1: and breed and then he'll go right back again. He'll
- 53:14Speaker 1: go on that that same you know, those same areas.
- 53:17Speaker 1: He's just going to each area. It's kind of like
- 53:18Speaker 1: a gobbler all the strut zone. You know they got
- 53:20Speaker 1: they got strut zone. They'll hit one strut zone and
- 53:22Speaker 1: they'll spit and drum and gobble and if they if
- 53:24Speaker 1: the hens come to them, you know, they hook up
- 53:27Speaker 1: or not, they'll go the next struts. I'm gonna do
- 53:29Speaker 1: the same thing the bucks are kind of doing there
- 53:31Speaker 1: in that mode right now, like they're they're scouting and
- 53:33Speaker 1: romans and and looking for the area that you know
- 53:36Speaker 1: when when the dig show starts, they're gonna know where
- 53:38Speaker 1: to go. Yeah, what time period do you think that
- 53:43Speaker 1: that scouting roaming period consists of, because right now we're
- 53:46Speaker 1: talking on October, But when do you think that usually
- 53:49Speaker 1: starts and stops, give or take. That's usually around the ear.
- 53:53Speaker 1: And I mean, you know I've seen it, you know
- 53:55Speaker 1: another state's line. I'll find it the Illinois. I found
- 53:57Speaker 1: in Kansas. I'm in a lot of the place and
- 53:59Speaker 1: usually you know, the Midwest, and it's usually um towards
- 54:03Speaker 1: the end of October, and they'll go away up to
- 54:05Speaker 1: about the about the first week of November, and then
- 54:09Speaker 1: the second week of Novembers when you start seeing a
- 54:11Speaker 1: second phase around here, which is the you know they're
- 54:14Speaker 1: they're they're cruising and and and I actually sent checking
- 54:18Speaker 1: and looking for those to breed. You know that that
- 54:19Speaker 1: stuff's going on. And then then you know, going into
- 54:21Speaker 1: the chasing and breeding stage. Start ahead, go bug ahead.
- 54:26Speaker 1: I was gonna say, can you elaborate then on that
- 54:29Speaker 1: second and third stage it a little bit more. Yeah,
- 54:32Speaker 1: the the stage is wow. I used to breakdown. I've
- 54:35Speaker 1: written ague stuff about you know, you've got the pre rut,
- 54:38Speaker 1: which is the you know, the beginning there and uh,
- 54:42Speaker 1: that's usually when season comes in and they're usually locked
- 54:44Speaker 1: to a textbook feeding bedding pattern, that kind of stuff,
- 54:47Speaker 1: going to watering hose and know it's a little bit
- 54:48Speaker 1: warmer during that time, and then it'll transition into you know,
- 54:52Speaker 1: get you up into October, and a lot of biologists
- 54:55Speaker 1: and stuff refor to that is, uh, that period of
- 54:58Speaker 1: it's a it's a late pre rut, but you also
- 55:00Speaker 1: start seeing um, some activity that makes people think, oh
- 55:03Speaker 1: my gosh, you know the ruts early this year. It's
- 55:05Speaker 1: way early. You know, I hated that. Every year I
- 55:07Speaker 1: get I can't tell you all, Like on Facebook, I
- 55:10Speaker 1: get messages from people I don't even know, man, the
- 55:12Speaker 1: ruts early this year. I see the buck chasing the
- 55:14Speaker 1: dough and and they're not like you know, I mean
- 55:16Speaker 1: as a hundred hundred you know, since I've been able
- 55:18Speaker 1: to walk. You know, people I said, well, those guys
- 55:22Speaker 1: are lying. They're not, but they're actually seeing some activity
- 55:25Speaker 1: with the lots of what they're seeing. They're seeing the
- 55:26Speaker 1: younger bucks, you know that that are they're wanting to breed.
- 55:30Speaker 1: They're fired up, they're anxious. They don't just don't know
- 55:32Speaker 1: what they're doing. They don't have a clue that those
- 55:34Speaker 1: aren't an astor ship and they and they and you've
- 55:36Speaker 1: seen it, you know yourself. You know hunting, you have
- 55:38Speaker 1: three or four dolls out feeding, buying their own business.
- 55:40Speaker 1: No sudden, you know, a spike or a little basket
- 55:43Speaker 1: rack will come in and you see that they'll start
- 55:44Speaker 1: getting nervous, you know, right off the bat. And he
- 55:47Speaker 1: comes in, you seem he'll like bristle up and make
- 55:50Speaker 1: a show one that he'll try to come up on
- 55:51Speaker 1: one and and try to climb up on her, and
- 55:53Speaker 1: she'll run off, and then and then she'll stop, and
- 55:56Speaker 1: then and then they'll start feeding again. He'll feed a
- 55:58Speaker 1: little bit, and he'll go to another one, try to it.
- 56:00Speaker 1: And then sometimes you'll get on one and they'll chase
- 56:02Speaker 1: them plumbat of the out of sight. You know that happens.
- 56:05Speaker 1: But you know, those doughs aren't ready to breed. That's
- 56:07Speaker 1: not a rut. He's not he's not breeding those doughs.
- 56:09Speaker 1: But what does happen sometimes is biologists will tell you
- 56:12Speaker 1: that the oldest dose in the herd will come in,
- 56:14Speaker 1: you know, coming Estra's first, and a lot of times
- 56:17Speaker 1: that is me October. And you actually see a mature
- 56:20Speaker 1: buck on a you know, on a dog like that,
- 56:23Speaker 1: you know, pushing her or even breeding or whatever. And
- 56:26Speaker 1: then people think, oh my gosh, you know the ruds early,
- 56:28Speaker 1: but the rest of the majority of the herd, I'm
- 56:30Speaker 1: not going to come in, you know, the asters until
- 56:32Speaker 1: about the second week in November, aunty or now that
- 56:35Speaker 1: I mean, And that's going to vary from state to state.
- 56:38Speaker 1: You know, when you go south, you've got you know,
- 56:39Speaker 1: it's way later than that. But you know, but around
- 56:42Speaker 1: here about the second week in November all the way
- 56:44Speaker 1: up to light November twenty five is when you know
- 56:46Speaker 1: a lot of the breeding and stuff is going on.
- 56:49Speaker 1: So so those bucks are once they're moving into that
- 56:53Speaker 1: cruising phase, then they're starting to really hit those key
- 56:56Speaker 1: dough areas just more often and more in daylight. What
- 57:00Speaker 1: you're saying, yep, yep, yep. We got some of our
- 57:02Speaker 1: I got a video, one video. I got several videos
- 57:06Speaker 1: of the buck I was telling you about a few
- 57:08Speaker 1: days ago on two of our Mark scrapes. And we
- 57:11Speaker 1: usually put those cameras on video mode because I like
- 57:14Speaker 1: the video model where your batteries down a lot quicker,
- 57:17Speaker 1: you know, and if it takes a lot longer to
- 57:18Speaker 1: go through the videos. But when you put them on
- 57:21Speaker 1: a Mark scrape like it, I mean, I love seeing
- 57:24Speaker 1: I love I love watching that I love watching them,
- 57:26Speaker 1: you know, walk up to and urinating the scrape, put
- 57:28Speaker 1: the rack up in the old king branch and you know,
- 57:31Speaker 1: lick on the branch, doesn't you know, bite off branches?
- 57:34Speaker 1: Do you know? Work the thing and plus what that
- 57:36Speaker 1: does that you know, pictures can be deceiving, you know,
- 57:39Speaker 1: depending on how close the deer is to the camera,
- 57:41Speaker 1: the lighting, the angle of that kind of stuff. Because
- 57:44Speaker 1: you know Nel as well as I do. You know,
- 57:46Speaker 1: in the past, you know, I'm sure you've got pictures
- 57:47Speaker 1: before you think, man, I'm on a shooter. You know
- 57:49Speaker 1: that that's a shooter. And then you get a couple
- 57:51Speaker 1: of pictures a couple of days later, and you know
- 57:53Speaker 1: it's the same deer, Like you don't have a you
- 57:55Speaker 1: need crack like maybe a kicker on this G two
- 57:57Speaker 1: and stuff. So you know it's the same deer. And
- 57:59Speaker 1: you're thinking that there might need another year, right, that
- 58:02Speaker 1: there might be a three or four year old, when
- 58:03Speaker 1: I was thinking it was a five year old. And
- 58:05Speaker 1: then you know, and then you see in person, then
- 58:07Speaker 1: you then then you'll love. But with the video they
- 58:09Speaker 1: come up, you would get all angles of the rack.
- 58:11Speaker 1: You know you're getting on you know, with their head down,
- 58:13Speaker 1: their head up sideways, and that you can you can
- 58:15Speaker 1: judge them a little better. And plus, like I said,
- 58:17Speaker 1: just cool watching them watching them work those scrapes. My
- 58:21Speaker 1: son last year, I think I was like him and
- 58:24Speaker 1: him and he killed He kept one over the mock
- 58:26Speaker 1: scrape that uh that we made, and um, it was
- 58:30Speaker 1: awesome coming and and uh, he was wanting to shoot
- 58:33Speaker 1: it right off the bat made him. I made him
- 58:35Speaker 1: wait just a little bit because I wanted to get
- 58:37Speaker 1: that footage, you know, at work in the scrape. And
- 58:39Speaker 1: and that's it's easy to say when you're running the camera,
- 58:42Speaker 1: when you're buying the camera, you can say stuff like that,
- 58:44Speaker 1: But when you're you know, you're behind the gun or
- 58:46Speaker 1: behind the bow, it's a different different story. But he
- 58:49Speaker 1: was patient. He let me get some good footage of it,
- 58:51Speaker 1: and he knocked in the nerds. So um, like right now,
- 58:55Speaker 1: you know, I'm I'm fired up. You know, I wish
- 58:57Speaker 1: I was in the woods. I'm having to work today,
- 58:58Speaker 1: and um, I wanted to take some time to talk
- 59:01Speaker 1: to you, and I go go right back to work
- 59:02Speaker 1: and get everything done. I'll try to I'll try to
- 59:04Speaker 1: take some time off, you know, our gun season comes
- 59:06Speaker 1: in here the second Saturday November. I try to take
- 59:10Speaker 1: some time off, you know, during that time, hunt my
- 59:11Speaker 1: son and my dad ands I'm I'm excited about it,
- 59:15Speaker 1: but I thought the being the wood right now, right
- 59:16Speaker 1: now is one of my favorite times to be in
- 59:17Speaker 1: the woods. UM for the next few weeks. UM this
- 59:20Speaker 1: scattering the Roman stage I was telling you about, you can,
- 59:23Speaker 1: They're really territorial during that that period you're starting semi
- 59:26Speaker 1: more daytime activity and going back to these transitional phases.
- 59:29Speaker 1: I try to adjust my tactics and my setups, my
- 59:32Speaker 1: strategies to that, you know, the current phases and that
- 59:35Speaker 1: that we're in and like right now, you know, I'll
- 59:38Speaker 1: use mark scrapes, I'll hunt over existing scrapes. UM. You can.
- 59:42Speaker 1: You can, you know, you can be versatile, lookin on
- 59:44Speaker 1: what kind of situation stuff you're in, and you can
- 59:47Speaker 1: you can go all out and and and you know,
- 59:49Speaker 1: hit them with tactics that attack all three senses, which
- 59:51Speaker 1: I like doing, you know, tacking their eyes or nose
- 59:53Speaker 1: in their ears. And and one way of doing that
- 59:55Speaker 1: is you can take our nose we know, with sense
- 59:58Speaker 1: and stuff and take her years with calling and tacked
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: their eyes with a decoy. Um. I've used um like
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: up in Illinois and especially Illinois it's a good state
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: to deco. And I've used decoys are in here too.
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: You know during the boat season. I don't do that
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: much turn the gun seasons will get shot season to
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: somebody come in and it looked like Swiss cheese or
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: decoys when they get done with it. But I kind
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: of like, you know, by one, you know, you can
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: get away with that. I'll put a I'll put a
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: buck decoy out and and uh they're you know and
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: marking mox scrape and and put some um some chartial
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: glance in and dominant buck urine and and um. If
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: I'm not seeing anything, I may I'm even blind called
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: a little bit to a you know, a couple of
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: agitated you know grunts or smort waves or something like that.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: An't get one to you know, to come in that
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: decoy idea what time or which phases of the rut
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: are you trying? That? Is that just uh, you know
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: roaming and scouting time period? Is that like you you've
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: gotta you need to match your That's a good question.
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: You need to try to match my decoy set ups.
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: My calling tactics everything to go like like I said,
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: like the current transition, like right now, you know, a
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: single buck decoy, like an intruder buck decoy is a
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: good tactic to use, and I'll use it over the
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: next you know, the next couple of weeks and um um,
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: you can put them out and and and and you know,
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: and just kind of get a feel for what the
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: they're doing. I mean, if if you see them, if
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: you're starting to get some day to my activity bucks
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: working an existing scrape or a mark scrape during the
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: day and that kind of stuff, and there you can
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: see their nexts are swelled up. I mean you can
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: see a big difference. I mean, like a couple of
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: weeks ago, you know they look normal. Now they look
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: like monsters. I mean they're two and three year old
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: bucks are looking like they're you know, they're next and
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: stuff for NFL line and they're huge and they're swelled
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: up and they're just like, you know, look like different
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: animals now and you know their territorial it's what they're
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: and you can key and on that exploited if you
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: if you do it right. But I'll use a I'll
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: use a button and not all the time. I mean,
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: I'm not saying every time I go out and set up,
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: I'm attacking all three. You know, in the right situations,
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: I'll take a buck be coy and and like I said,
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: I'll use some dominant buck heren and and um some
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: tarsal gland and stuff like that and and uh and
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: just see what happens, and occasionally hit him with some
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: some column things is you know, just do some like
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: agitated grunts. And another good tactic is one you can
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: do uh with that that same scenario, you can do
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: a grunt and rub and what I mean by that,
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: you can take an antler. Um. You know, if everybody's
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: got most people got sheds and stuff, take a shed
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: antler and and when you get their things set up,
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: especially during the long periods where you're not seeing a
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: whole lot of action and stuff. And sometimes if the
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: if the deers within earshot, you can you can take
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: that antler and you can rub it on a Samplin tree,
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: rub it and do a couple of agitated grunts. Rub
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: it again, you know, And and and it's all about realism.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: I mean, you know, deers here and a lot of
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: a lot of people go out and and they've watched
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: the outdoor channel. They've seen a guy rattling them in
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: of Texas, and they'll go out and they rattle like
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: cray easy and they do this and do that, and
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: they're they're you know, they're doing it way too much
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: and way too loud, and and they're not seeing a
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: whole lot of wonder. Well, heck, that worked on TV,
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: but it didn't work here. Well, you've gotta match your
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: calling tacttes is the current transition. So what I'm saying
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: like this this rub and um, this scrunt and rub tactic,
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: I mean, it'll work because that's what they're doing right now.
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: Their territories. They're making rubs and they've they've got their
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: quarries established, like you know, this is my domain. This
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: is where I'm gonna be breeding that. These are my dolls.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: You know, let's have the dominant bucks looking at it.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: And if you went in there and worked his scrape
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: or made a mark scrape in his area, and then
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: he's within the near show and he may be you know,
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: bedded down, and he hear you in there grunt and
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: going on and making a rub and stuff that that
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: ticks him off he doesn't like that, you know, and
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: they'll they'll come in. I I killed one. Um, it's
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: probably been three or four years ago. It rant on
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: the Night and Hill Show on out Door Channel, and
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: it was here in the mountains and we got in
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: there as the evening hunt is about this time of
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: year out here, and the buck we had on camera
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: was completely nocturnal. I mean, he was just he was
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: a ghost. I mean I had, like I said, I
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: had ten eleven cameras out and you know, had him
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: pretty much paid where he was bed and had his
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: stage in area where he was feeding that at his
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: travel rail. I knew all that stuff, but we just
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: won't get a whole of the daytime activity. And then
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: he started showing up some during the day and working
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: on Marks Grave when he was out you know, like
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: I said, he was at Romans Scount looking for those
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: and I knew that was the time I could capitalize on,
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: you know, take advantage of it. So we got Litree
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: and I The anny thing is we got in there,
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: the cameraman and I and UM, there was a there
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: was an already a couple of those. It was one
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: of those cloudy, overcast days and I had to work,
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: but I got in there early. I mean I left
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: work a little early and got into a three thirty.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: You know, you know, they were already in there, and
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: uh so we had to sit there and wait, you know,
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: for them to kind of kind of feed out. And
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: I had, luckily, I had had the camera that the
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: wires camera sends the pictures to your phone, which was
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: cool because I knew before going down in there if
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: there was any deer in there. He had the camera
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: facing towards the double set stands, and you know, I
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: had a pretty good idea of with any deer you know,
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: in that area and and and we could see those
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: those so we basically just let them feed on out
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: and left and uh so we smuckle that in there,
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: didn't bump any deer guy in the stand and got
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: everything got set up and just perfectly and co front
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: coming in overcast, cloudy, I mean, just you know, deer
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: hunter's dream got in there, and we had a couple, um,
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: we had a couple of basketbacks come in and you know,
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: they were coming in and they were seeing a little
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: bit and they were and then they got too close
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: to see their next bist or up and they they'd
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: lock up and push each other. They weren't like fighting
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: violently or anything like that. They just push you due
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: back and forth, and that all that stuff was going on,
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: and uh, we see them on that to join everything.
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: And at that time the hulla blow us a cow
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: comes up and those deer lost their minds. I mean
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: they blew and they ran right down into the area
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: with a buck that we were hunting where he was
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: generally been betting at. So you know that that could
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: have messed up the entire hunt because I know they
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: ran about a top of them. They were blow in
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: every few minutes. I was like, oh my gosh, you know, like, man,
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: that's that's a perfect thing. And that's even right before
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: a co front, I know, I mean just had it
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: my guy. I knew he was gonna probably come out
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: and give us a shot. And out here these jokers
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: are down everybody. I'm just going crazy. And um, what
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: I've learned though a long a long time ago hunting
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: and as I've seen, like we was talked to, when
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: these a lot of these young bucks chase those and
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: they're not ready to breed, those dolls will will blow
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: luck that you know, when they're being harassed and aggravated.
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: And I've seen them blow lup, you know, just like
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: they would if they've they've seen something they didn't like,
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: or they you know, they picked up human sing or colley,
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: since they do that, but occasionally do it because of that.
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: So I did that. I blew like a duck with
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: my mouth, you know, back where he's at. I mean,
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: I did it like a little young buck tending grunt.
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: You know. I've got a grunt call that I can adjust,
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: you know, sound like a young bucks, sound like a doze,
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: sound like a you know, mature buck or whatever. And
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: I did like a little young buck tendon grunt, you know,
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: and like he was a asser. And by that you're
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: just saying, like about you, it's kind of it's kind
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: of it's more of a nasally type grunt. You know.
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: It doesn't have that day to have that base to it,
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: you know, but you can tell us a book and
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: and uh, I did that, and it wasn't I've got
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: a list off him. This is not just some you know,
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: just some some un story. I mean, this all happened
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: and it ran out that door. We were sitting there
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: and I had a young cameraman at the time, and
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: and uh, he was crazy about deer hunt and he'd
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: killed some deer, but he had never you know, he
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: was always an impression his day and granted a hunter
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: around here. And and you know, people just didn't call
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: a lot, you know, because you just call them what.
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: They didn't think Colin was very effective and all that
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: kind of stuff. And and a lot of them it
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: seemed to you know, the shows on TV with the
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: Hunt Texas ner Rattle and you were just running for
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: every direction and they tried to hear it didn't work.
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: So they just said, how call it doesn't work here?
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: And Colin does work. Colin works everywhere. You know, your
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: vocal everywhere. It's just you're just gonna match what, you know,
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: what they're doing at the time we're calling. And of
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: what happened was we're sitting up there and he said,
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: why why did you do that? You know, he's whispering
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: using the standing by me, and I told myself, thought
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: to take right after that, I'll take what I was done,
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: you know. So he was there and thinking, you know what,
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: what was he doing that? And um, all of a
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: sudden down in the holloway or you know, deep at
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: deep pitch and he goes, he goes. He his eyes
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: got I mean bigger of saucers. He said, if you
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: said you take up with somebody somebody called a grut
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: cause and no, that's that's not that's not somebody, that's
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: that's that's that's that's a that's the buck. And that's
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: the right where he beat at those bucks that just
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: had ran down there. Only and um, he could hear
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: we start hend stick. It was dry at starting sticks
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: breaking here and that Steady walk, I mean he was
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: just he come in all stiff flag like Frankenstein, you know,
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: all stiff legged, bristled up mad. I mean he was.
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: He was mad and I could literally hear my camera
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: and breathing. I mean he was, I mean he was
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: in the stand above me. But he was just so
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: fired because he never heard a bug be vocal and
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: and it's Stuart was before he got up there, he'd
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: never heard by Bucks noort Ways before, so he's seen
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: it on TV and that kind of stuff. But when
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: he heard that, I mean he was just he was
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: just about to lose his mind. And so it comes
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: up there after smort Ways, Steady walked up there, hit
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: my marks great wore it out. We got footage of
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: it just wearing the mark scraped out. You know, it's
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: pollen and dirt's gots rack up in the Reagan branch
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: bit and stuff. It's your and I mean it's awesome,
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: just just I mean, just beautiful footage. And it comes
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: on that from Mark straight who comes over right her
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: most of the calling and right into one of my
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: shoot lanes and I was all right at full drawing
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: and I smacked it. I mean he watched it fault
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: inside of the staying. It read about forty yards and
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: you know, piled up. But um, that hunt would in
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: my opinion, you know, it's sometimes it's hard to say
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: what would happen, what wouldn't have happened. But in my opinion,
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: if I hadn't done the calling there, I don't think
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: that buck would have come out after dark. I think
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: it would have been thinking, you know, a predator jumped
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: those those young bucks made him better on it. But
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: there was something there was possibly something drew up there.
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: If he was going to go through it had probably
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: been after doorter. But I think when he heard that
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: he heard them doing that and he heard the uh
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: probably got him alarmed. And then when he heard me
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: do the you know that ten and grunt and then me,
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: do you know, I'll blow in my mouth, you know,
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: right when he was doing that, when I was doing
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: the tenor grunt, I think he was convinced at a
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: buck it might have been a little bit bigger than
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: the two that ran in on top of him. Was
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: up there head ran them off, and them was up
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: there harassing that though, And that's what I think he thought,
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: and he was gonna go up there and let him
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: know who who the boss was. Yeah, So what about
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: I mean, you mentioned the fact that calling can be
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: effective if it's done, you know, at the right times
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: to match the right time of year or situation. So
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: what about some of the other typical calls we're thinking of,
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: like a snort, wheez or donast something like that. When's
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: the right to something like I'm trying to me in
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: the ruption. What what I'll do right now is we're
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: doing this territory or scout in the Roman stage, I'll
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: do some of the agitated grunts, little deep grunts. I'll
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: do that grunt and rug technique I was telling you about,
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: and um and stuff like that, and the snort ways. Um.
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: I usually don't do UM until I see a buck.
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: And if I see a buck and it's at a
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: bow range and it's going the opposite direction or you know,
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: it's going away from me, I might already say I'm
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: not going to get a shot. I'll hit him with
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: the stort ways of the short ways of tricky votivation.
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: You can do it sometimes. And a buck or coming
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: there wanting to I mean just bristled up, wanting to
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: wanting to fight the world, And you can do it
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: other times. And a buck that's been whipped and stuff,
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: and maybe a mature buck and may even be a
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: shooter buck, but if it's been whipped before or or
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: you know, bucks are just like people. You know, You've
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: got some people that you know you look in the
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: wrong way, they're ready to fight you. And you've got
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: other people that will go ten miles out of the
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: way to avoid any kind of confrontation, you know, and
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: and deer and stuff with the or the same way,
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: especially once we've been with so I've seen dear you know,
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: respond to short ways where they come in fired up,
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: wanting to want to rock. And I've seen them where
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: they you know, We're made them weary and they steal.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: They've come in, but they're kind of weary about you know,
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: where's this buck added at the buck that's already with me?
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: You know that kind of deal. I've seen them goes
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: the other way, you know, you know with it. So
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: I'll use the short ways. You know, if I in
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: a situation where the buck's going away and I'm not
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: gonna get a shot, you know, and and I'll hit
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: them with that, and you know, sometimes it will turn around,
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: and you know sometimes it won't. But the but this
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: time here with my colleing saple is, I'll do that
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: that that grunt and rub techniques I've told you about earlier.
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: I'll do the some agitated grunts and I will do
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: a snort ways, you know, depending on you know, the situation.
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: And if it's in a situation like I thought about earlier,
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: you know where a young bucks around, do a young
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: buck ten and grunt and then do a dog blow,
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: you know, like she's being a rasp bomb, you know,
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: I'll do that sometimes. It just depends on what you know,
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: what the situation is. But those are kind of calls
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: I'll use on that now. Later on when I'm starting
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: to see that, you know, going to the actual breeding
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: transition of the rut, and I'm starting to see bucks chasing,
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: you know, mature bucks, not the basket wraps with up
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: with mature bucks actually you know, you know on doze
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: and you know they're they're they're if you see breeding
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: activity or then you know walking mind on pushing the
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: dough or and actually breeding a dough, and I'll switch
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: it up and that time I'll do more of the
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: uh astrastoe bleeds and stuff like that, and uh the
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: tend on the situation till on the bucks doll ratio
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: in that area, I may even um, you know, during
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: a long period, I may do a dominant buck tending
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: grunt you know, louder grown you know them than tending
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: the dough, pushing the dough and and and do the
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: astrastoe bleeds and maybe it mix up a little rattling
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: and fighting what they have because you know, bucks are
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: still territorial whatnot and if they I mean how many
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: times I've I've watched it on that door channel and
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: I've seen it in first and I know you have
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: to where you've got a buck chasing the dough and
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: he's grunting, he's chasing and whatnot, and he's a pretty
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: good looking buck. And another bucks that with the near
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: shop heard that and here he comes in, you know,
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: and sometimes he'll doing up with that buck and chaser,
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: and sometimes those two bucks will fight each other. And
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: that's a common scenario that happens. So you might do
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: a tendon grunt and you know, into an astro stop
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: bleeding into a agitated gun. That too some potting, you know,
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: because that that's a snare that could happen. You know,
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: bucks come in there there was a buck chasing a
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: though he was on or and a more dombined buck
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: come in and you know, confront of them and they
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: broke it into the thought. So you can you know,
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: you can mix it up. Now, what about rattling, because
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: that's another one of those calling tactics, And I like
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: the fact that a lot of your calling ideas revolver
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: on trying to make a realistic scenario, you know, with
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: the rubbie, the tree and everything. When you're rattling, do
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: you do the same kind of thing? I know some
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: guys that will put rattley antlers on a rope and
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: banging around down on the ground so that rustles and
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: the leaves or shake a tree or do you do
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: anything like that. Yeah, I'll tell you what they do,
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: and I'll probably some people listen. It's probably laugh at
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: me for doing it. And I'm sure some of cameraman
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: folks humors when I've done it until actually a buck
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: comes in after I do it. And it's all about realism.
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: I mean, it's the same time of turkey calling everything else.
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: I mean, you've got to sound real. I mean, just
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: got sound like a real scenario. And sometimes like when
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: I'm doing it, you know, going back to the tender
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: grunt and and you know, an astrastow bleat if I'm
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: sitting there, you know, uh, and I'm not seeing a
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: whole lot and loker or not and a lot going on.
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: And sometimes especially if I'm going off the ground, and
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: you could do it the tree stand tube, but just
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: it's a little bit more risky trying to get back
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: up in the tree if I'm in a blind and
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: in an area where I think that they're that you're
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: a pretty good distance from me, where I've got time
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: to get back in the trail too, is uh, I've
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: got like one one of the drunk calls I use.
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: It's got the it's kind of a dampture on where
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: you can you can adjust the vocalizations. You can go
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: from like I said, a young buck to a dough
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: bleat astros dowbleat to a dominant buck runt. And it's
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: kind of tube. You can do a snort waves on it.
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: You can do all that. So what the snails I'll
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: do is I'll I'll actually, especially when it's dry, I'll
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: get out and I'll just do a tend to go up,
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: this light tend and grunt and nasally go up, and
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: I'm moving with it. And I'll move and I'll be
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: breaking sticks. I'm trying to make some noise. I'm I'm
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: going through the waves just like you would. You would
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: you know, you would hear if it was actually going on,
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: and do an astros do bleed and they do it.
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: And and if they're sitting there at therenthing air shot,
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: they can hear that that calls moving. The bucks can
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: get call shot I just like turkeys or anything else can.
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: But when they're hearing a lot of times may have
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: been called to. The calling is coming from the same
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: exact spot. And just like a Turkey. If you make
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: a call, they've ten pointed almost. It's eerie how how
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: they can pimple exactly where you where you called from.
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: The bucks are the same way. I mean, they can
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: pimpoint exactly what that call is coming from. And if
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: it's moving and stuff and they're hearing, you know, leaves
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: ruffle and sticks break, and you're trotting, you know, like
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: a deer. That that sounds. That sounds realistic. And a
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: lot of times I've done that and then get back
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: in you know, get back in my blunt or or
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: you know, sometimes I'm not but I'm just sitting on
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: the ground and got a makeshift blind, you know, lat
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: up around me or come out in a tree and
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: you do that. And it's crazy how how fact of
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: that can be. I mean, it really can work. And
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: I remember the first time I did it with my
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: my son. He was feeling me and he said, the
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: head he said, you know what, he said, it's crazy,
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: he said, But if if you know, if I closed
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: my eyes that stuff was going on, he said, I
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: would have been sure that that was actually a buck
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: chasing the dough. He s because it sounded, you know,
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: so real, you know, with the lead and all that
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: stuff moving and the same thing with that, that grunt
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: and rub tactic I'm telling you about. I mean, you
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: get real antler going up against a sapling tree and
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: you're scraping it and the and if it's got leaves
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: on it and and it's shaking and going on, and you
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: stop a little bit and drun a little bit and
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: put some time between the do it again. That sounds realistic.
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: I mean that's something that they don't hear every day
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: unless it's the real thing. So I think that, you know,
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: the more you can add realism to your you know,
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: to your set up, the better, the better off the
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: odds or be that you you know, you get a shot. Yeah,
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: I really I really like that. That's that's something not
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: a lot of people take to that level, but it
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: sure makes a lot of sense. Um, I'm gonna amit.
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: You feel kind of goofy there, you know, trotting for
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: relk and you're trying to sound like a deer. You know,
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: you're trotting around and and and and stuff and and
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: and you're thinking out I must look pretty you know,
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: pretty silly right now. But it I mean it sounds real.
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: I mean, you can you know, I've got it on
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: video of us doing it. And and if you if
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: you not looking at me, and you know, turn your
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: head and you can you know here, you would think
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: that that's actually what's going on. I mean that there's
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: a buck chasing chasing. That was the same thing with
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: the rattling. I mean a lot of people just break
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: out bamplers or break out the rattle bag whatever they
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: got and just start, you know, going crazy. And sometimes
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: that works. But what I do with when when I
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: write or you know, he's asking about the rattling and
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: I got off on another. But what do you do
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: on the when I rattled? Well, I'll start it out,
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: you know, like a real scenario. I'll do an agitated
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: just a deep buck grunt, grel real, you know, real
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: real deep with some base to it. And then I
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: may and I'll turn my head work because it's come
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: from a nether direction. Just the vocalization on the grunt
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: they've been doing, you know, another buck grunt, and the
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: sounds a little bit different. There's two bucks coming there
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: and they've seen each other and they know grunt that
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: each other like hey, you better, I'm here, you better
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: get out of here and the other one's doing the
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: same thing, and then I'll hit a snort wee's you know,
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: do that with them and if they and well that
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: that bucks respond to another but coming up and then
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: you know, I might do that as state relics coming
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: towards them and they start with the you know, with
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: the with the rattling you know, make makes noise and
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: stuff tend to lead it up to that, and I
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: just start out, you know, rattling. And I'm not saying
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: just turn arounto doesn't work because it will depend on
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: the scenario. But I always try to create as a
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: realistic calling scenarios I can that you know, it sounds
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: like the sounds like the real thing. That seems like,
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: you know, I have better results when when I when
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: I do that, and it's not I mean, it's not
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: like on TV. You know people say it don't TV,
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: especially now Texas, you know, because the deer you know,
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: I've seen people just it just blows my mind. I
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: remember the kid and the Outdoor cham Force came out
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: watching some of these shows in Texas, you know, and
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: being from Kentucky, I never have been the Texas or
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: anything like that, and that those guys walk out there,
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: and the s Darrow's and they crash thees big antwers
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: together and just bucks are just coming running in from
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: everywood direction like he's ringing a dinner bell or something.
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: I was thinking, my gosh, I gotta get a set
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: of you know, of a rattling I gotta get out
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: there and do that. And then you go out there
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: and do it, and you do it the wrong time
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: of year, you don't do it right, or you do
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: it too much, and and you don't have the wind right,
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: you don't, you know, you don't, your setups not right
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: and stuff, and it doesn't work. Then you get you
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: start losing confidence that well maybe the dear, myer, they
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: just aren't you know, they just don't respond to the columns.
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: I hear that a lot of round here in these mountains,
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: because I say, you know, this ain't this ain't kids,
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: this ain't Illinois. You these deers don't, dear, don't respond.
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: And you know what I'm sure of thinking, well, you
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: you just not done it right, I mean, and it's
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: not gonna work every time, you know, I mean, it's
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: like anything else. I mean, every time you hit a deer,
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: call you know, Doon and Crocus, I gonn run up
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: there and jump in your lay up. It just you know,
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: it just doesn't work that way. I don't care if
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: you're hunting Illinois or Texas or wherever. It just doesn't
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: work that way. But if you if you can match
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: their vocalizations with the current transition and add realism to
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: your call, and Colum can work. I don't care what
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: states are, you don't care where your hunting. Okay, how
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: much hunt pressure as there is, you know it'll it'll work.
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: And I know that from fact, and and I've got
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: the video to prove it. And you know I've got
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: hunt after hunt after hunt. You know, when I'm public
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: laying areas and and private only, it doesn't know that
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: man ors. I mean, if you if you've done it
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: right in a situation's right. You know, they definitely probably
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: dearer vocal, no matter what states they're living in and
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: how much pressure it is. Dear or vocal. I mean,
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: that's just how it is. Yeah, it's interesting. It's one
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: of those things that, like you said, a lot of
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: people probably give up after trying a handful of times
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: and not getting the response. But I feel like a
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: good response rate to calls, I mean one out every
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: every ten times maybe is what's honestly gonna happen. But
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: usually that when you get that one positive response, it's
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: it's so worth the ten other times trying or the
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: night other times. Right, so it's it's worth the right thing,
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: you know, the young man, do you know when you're
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: you're staying on your out and girl, if you just
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: you know, put the first pretty girl and hit on
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: a little bit and she blew you off and and
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: rejected you, you know, what do you do? You just
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: go home and quit. Forevery never hit on another girl.
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: I mean, that's not how it works. I mean, you know,
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: don't you know what everybody's ratio the grants, racial is
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: different on that. But I mean, you know, you've just
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: got to keep doing it till till it works. Unfore
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: you got to do sometimes I'm not setting saying, you know,
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: climb up in your stand or climate your w to
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: just sit there on a call the entire time you're
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: out there, you're probably not going great results. But I
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: mean colin can be a super effective way to generate shot.
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: Like you said, the you know, one out of ten
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: times if it worked at one at ten times it
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: was well worth, but I thought that it didn't absolutely.
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: I mean, so let's let's rewind the tape a little bit. Um.
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: So we've talked about how to call to deer, you know,
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: when you're at the right time of year, in the
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: right places. But let's rewind back to getting in the
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: right places again. We we we talked a little bit about,
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: you know, especially in this kind of seeking or scouting
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: and roaming phase first part of November, first couple of weeks,
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: maybe these deer are going from dough hot spot to
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: do hot spout check in to see if they're ready
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: to breed. Um. You hear about this a lot. I mean,
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: if anyone's read or listen to any talk about the rut.
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: You hear about dough betting areas, you hear about funnels, um,
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: and then you hear about one other thing, which is
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: dear crazy during the right you can't pattern them. But
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: what I hear you say, well, they're going back to
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: hot spot to hot spot to hot spot. That makes
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: me think maybe you can pattern um a little. So.
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: So yeah, I'm curious about your thoughts on that because
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: I've I definitely have some thoughts with chatted with a
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: few folks that have pointed to some recent studies that
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: show there's a little bit of pattern rble behavior. But
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: what have you seen. What do you think about patterning
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: deer during the run? Yeah, you you definitely can patternger
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: during the run. I mean, and there is truth that there.
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: It is chaotic. I mean, the truth of the matter
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: is I'll use this example before, is that if a
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: dough it's an eat, and she's got a mature buck
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: on her and she decided to walk across a crowded
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: Walmart park a lot on Saturday morning. If she goes
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: across that park a lot, he's gonna go with her.
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: That's what gets them killed this time of year, knowing
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: by others, what gets them killed on the road and
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: everything else. Wherever that dough goes, he's gonna go. That's
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: you know, that's how it works. And you said, well,
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: how do you know how can you pattern that? Well,
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: you pattern what we just talked about. You need to
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: go to those spots, you need to run trail cameras
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: and more of those. It's I guess it's kind of
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: it's great, but it's kind of accursed because like right now,
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: I'm talking to you. My phone's vibrated. My cell phone
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: has about I'm on the land line and my cell
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: phone vibrate about six times. Let me know what. I've
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: got pictures right now. They're there in front of one
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: of my my trail cameras. And and that's keeping me
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: up late at night because I hear my phone vibrated
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: three in the morning, I'll jump up. It's like a
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: kid at Christmas or see what you know in front
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: of the camera. Sometimes it's coons, sometimes it's you know there,
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: you know, and sometimes something else. But going back to
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: what I was saying, you use those wireless cameras and stuff,
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: and in real time you can know what's going on,
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: you know, in real time, like if you get, uh,
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: you know, Buck's going to a certain area one of
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: those no hot spots and you know mid morning or whatnot,
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: and you need to you need to try to hunt
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: mid morning at that place. That's when he when he's
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: going through there. Now, what won't be paid was that
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: if he could when he goes to those spots like he,
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: like David Hell used to say, you know, like God
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: was making the milk run and Bucks making the milk run.
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: Along with me by that they're they're going to those
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: spots this spot and if they don't don't get there,
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: they're going to the next spot then because they're going
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: to the next spot. And the pot is that you
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: can't pattern is if they go to one of those
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: spots and they get all of though, you know, that's
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: actually ready to breed. And he, you know, he's gonna
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: go with her, and and a lot of times he'll
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: try to get her. He'll try to you know, corral
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: and push her away from high traffic areas so he
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: won't be interrupted by I know, the buck. We have
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: any competition, he'll try to get he'll try to push
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: her a little bit, but I mean, you know, that's
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: gonna mind her own. And she decides to go left,
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: and he's wanted to go right. He can't persuade her
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: and kind of push her to go right, and she
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: ends up gonna left. He's gonna go with her, and
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: you know, and and some dose they'll they'll make the
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: buck work for it. They'll make them, you know, from
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: a piece and and and and you know, and get
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: them rended up and then you know, then they'll breed
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: with them. So you know, the mind of the dough.
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: You don't know which way she's gonna go, you know
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: what's gonna happen. But what you depart that you can
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: pattern is the areas that he's gonna be looking forward
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: those and after he after he gets with the dough
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: and he's pushed her off and he's bred or you know,
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: several times when he gets done, he's gonna go and
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: look for another dough So he's gonna go those same
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: spots again. And it's all that time. And so if
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: you can be in those areas, and trail camps can't
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: help you on that, especially the wireless ones. You know,
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: if you if you've got a prop to get some
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: moss cameras and and you've got them in those spots
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: and you're you're seeing a lot of mid morning activity
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: or midday activity, or you know it could be right
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: at day on or whatnot. That's the times you need
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: to hunt because even if he's already got to go
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: out of there, I mean how many I mean, name
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: me a place where you you know there's only one dough.
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: I mean most time of those those are a real family.
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: When it will be you know, groups of dose and
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: when he's he's already got one out of there, and
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: when he gets done with her, he'll be back through,
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: you know, try to get another one. And and you
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: just gotta be there. And so there is some patterns
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: to it. I mean, you can't just go out and
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: and flop down and just hope, you know, hope for
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: the best west of the rut. You know, where's it
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: the boon and crocodad. It should be here any time.
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: It doesn't work that way. I mean, you can't pattern.
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: But they're at the same time, there's lots there is.
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: There is some chaos in it. And the chaos or
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: the factors you can't control. You and I can't control.
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: We're an instrus that's gonna go after a boat gets
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: on her. We can We don't know what she's gonna do.
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: A lot of times, I don't think she knows what
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: she's gonna do. You know, she's being pushed by him,
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: you know, and she's you know, it's a breeding thing.
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: She she may go with, she may go right, she
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: may go back the way she came, but that Bok's
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: gonna go with her, you know. So we can't we
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: can't control that. We can't control hunting pressure. You know. Uh,
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: that's another part of the chaos. There's people that don't
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: hunt all year, they don't hunt any time, but they'll
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: hunt during the rut. And and and one of the
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: reasons why they've heard all the stories, you know, like
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: we said that so on and so didn't even even
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: need scared. He just they just put him somewhere. He killed,
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: he killed, you know, the big buck in his sculling.
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: Hear about that stuff all the time. So a lot
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: of people, you know, it's like when the parrot ball
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: gets up there to the multi millions. You know, people
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: both ever played the lottery're gonna play the lottery. And
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: the same thing going on with with with with the
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: rutting deer says people are don't harley bow hunt or
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: don't do anything that they get a little bit excited
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: during the rut and they're just hoping for the best.
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: And when you get those people out, a lot of
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: them don't have confidence in the places that they're sitting
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: at because they know deep then they've not scouted or
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: they've not been running cameras, they've not put in the work,
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: and they'll sit there and they'll get cold. Get here
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: with that the grass is greener mentality where maybe I
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: should go over here and look, maybe I should go
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: over there, and they get out, they roam around, and
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: then they inintentionally you know, jump Bucks and those you know,
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: and they push them you know, wherever, so that you
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: can't control that part of it. But the part you
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: can't control is putting yourself in a situation where you've
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: got a really good chance of of of of same
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: one that's out looking for those So those hot spots
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: are the key places. And I'm a firm believer if
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: you can put Wiars cameras out and if you don't
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: have Wiars camps, but the other can you know, the
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: regular standard cameras out and and just kind of march
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: what's going on. And it's trying to put yourself in
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: the best position that you can. So let's dive in
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: deeper into what those right spots are. We we've mentioned
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: dough hot spots a couple of times, but let's talk
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: a little bit more about specifically what kind of places
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: you find to be those dough hot spots there in
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: the right And then secondly, so part part one is
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: where specifically or what specifically do these doe hot spots
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: look like. And then number two is how he is
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: set up on them, because lots of times we'll hear, oh, well,
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: you know hunt down wind of the dough betting area,
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: and that sounds great in theory, but how do you
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: find the absolute right spot within the spot like that
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: the killing spot down are? Can you answer me those
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: two things? But that all goes to your scaling. I mean,
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: that goes into your personal experience and you're scouting, you know,
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: watching if you've got one of my favorite places obviously
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: is is you know a preferred dough betting area, you know,
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: and and you know where those are bed and that
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: because that's where they're going to be at the majority
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: part of the day. You know, there are in that
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: lime and actually nocturnal even a lot of activity goes
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: on and stuff at night and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: And but during the bedding area, and that's a usually
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: a daytime place. Now they do feed during the day.
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: Stuff goes on during to day. They may get off
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: the bed and you know, go go feed and come back,
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: but that bed and there is where they spend the
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: bulk of their time. So that's where I want to be.
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: I want to spend the book of my time in
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: a doe betting area. And that's not the only place
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: I one, but that's one. If I can find a
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: spot like that, and I rank cameras, and I see
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: the way that does you know how they go into
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: you know, how they're entering it, how there, And that's
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: why I'm a firm believer using multiple cameras. I mean,
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: you know, one camera tells you a little bit. Five
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: cameras will tell you a whole lot more. And if
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: I've got a dough bean an area, I make the
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: truth three cameras on that bed area, so I can
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: determine how the majority of the those and and deer
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: don't follow a script. I mean you know, well, either
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: you've been a situation we think this set up. I've
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: got this tree stand here, the deer is coming from
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: the west this you know the buck is That's how
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: it comes in. And then you get up there and
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: get set up, and the deer comes in from the least.
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: I mean, you know they don't follow a script. But
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: the more you know, the better off you are on
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: how to set up on it. So if I know
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: that those primarily the majority of them are coming in
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: a certain way to the band area, they're exiting a
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: certain way, and that tells me how, you know, I
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: need to set up. And also if those cameras are
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: gonna tell me is is are you know all the
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: bucks coming through there? You know what time is a
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: really coming through there? And when they come through there,
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: how are they going in? Do they just go by
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: and sent check the thicket from a distance, you know,
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: get the win in their favorite scent check it, or
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: they actually going into the thicket if they do go in,
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: how they go in, if they get on the dough,
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: how they're going out. All that stuff will tell you, you
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: you know, if there's I can't you know nobody's here
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: and say, well you find out the bed in the
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: area you get down when you set up, Well, you
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: know that may work and may not work. You you've
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: got to do the You gotta do the homework on it.
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: You gotta know how they're, how they're entering, how they're
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: leaving the you know the prime times that they're that
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: they get off the bed. Dear, don't a lot of
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: people think that, Dear, just come in Buck's and those
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: they come in they feed at night, they come in.
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: You know, if you're lucky, you get them a little
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: bit after daylight and they go in, they lock in
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: on the bed and then that's it. You know, they
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: don't move to the right at you right before dark
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: or after dark and there they do that a lot.
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: But dear, I've I've hunted dead in the areas my
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: whole life, and I can tell you that I've never
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: in my life seen dear that go in before daylight,
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: lay down in the bed and they lay there till
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: dark and don't move throughout the day. You, I mean,
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: just put yourself in that situation, do you? And I've
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: hunted all day it's hard. It's one they said, y'all
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: hunt all day during the rut. But when you get
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: in there two hours before daylight and sit down and
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: and it's cold and whatnot, and you're sitting there and
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: you sit there throughout the entire day, and if it's
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: one of those days you're not seeing a lot of activity.
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: It is hard to sit there like that all day long,
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: all day till after dark. And I can tell you
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: one thing. When you do do that, a couple of
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: days of that, these guys that say, oh, I have
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: trouble to sleep, and go hunt the rut, Go hunt
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: the rut before day lute the dark. I guarantee you
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: at sixty so it starts getting dark at five and
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: six o'clock. And even I guarantee you when you get home,
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: you don't want to eat or do anything, you just
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: want to go to bed. Completely wears you out. And
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: it's hard for the deer too. I mean, think about it,
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: they're just sitting there all day. Well a lot of
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: more what they'll do is they'll get up and no
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: brows around. You know, you know, everybody wants to hunt
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: food plots and uh, you know, when the acrons are
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: dropping a lot of stuff is great. But the deer,
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: a lot of their has been studies showing a lot
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: of brows makes up a lot of big portion of
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: their diet. And the brows on sapling twigs and honeysuckle
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: and and you know at the akrons and stuff like that.
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: They'll move around little bit. So a lot of times
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: there will go down that have been pressure. We'll go
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: down in bed before before it gets daylight. But a
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: lot of times, you know, after that morning they'll get
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: up and stretch. They'll get up and stretch. Um bucks
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: are no tourists with getting up and and and going
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: to the bathroom, you know, getting them going to bathroom,
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: stretching legs, brad as a little bit. They may they
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: may work as gray or do something. They go back
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: and bed down four ft from where they were originally. Bad,
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: but they will get up and move a little bit.
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: But no one like I'm going back, got a little
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: off track there, but going you know, no one where
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: those those are bad bad, no one how they typically
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: go in, how they typically you know, exit um is
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: our mid morning. You know Brow's activities are getting up
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: off the bed and moving around a little bit, and
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: how they do and the more you can know about
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: that the bed and I'll tell you exactly how to
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: set up or let's take a second here to think
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: our friends at Morton. Morton is the builder of wood frame,
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: steel sided buildings. And we're out on the back forty
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: right now as I speak. I am just dreaming. I
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: said this before, but I think a Morton building would
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: be perfect up here. We're actually sleeping in a fifth wheel.
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: We pulled the fifth wheel all here that I was
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: lucky enough to get to borrow from my in laws.
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: That's great, but it would be nice if we had
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: a building here that could be our skin and shack,
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: that could be our bunk house, that could store our equipment.
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: If we get a tractor someday or something like that,
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: that would be perfect to store here, our mower, our UTV.
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: Morton building would be ideal for a scenario like this,
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: and it might be a deal for your hunting camp
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: or deer property as well. Visit Morton Buildings dot com
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: to learn more. We also want to thank weather Be.
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: Weather b is a three generation family business. These guys
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: are in Sheridan, Wyoming, now producing some of the most
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: high quality precision rifles you can find. I've got one
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: of their Vanguards and I'm gonna be putting it to
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: the test in just a couple of weeks. Opening day
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: of firearms season and mission is November. I'm gonna be
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: heading up north to our family deer camp taking my
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: thirty at six van guard, and I'm excited because from
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: what I've experienced so far, it's gonna put the bullet
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: right where I want it and it's gonna feel really
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: good doing it. So if you want to learn more
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: about weather Be, you can visit Weatherby dot com. They've
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: got some great videos over on YouTube as well. The
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: story of their family business, the story of how they
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: came to Wyoming in particular, I found really interesting, So
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: check it out and happy hunting. You mentioned trail cameras
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: a couple of times there throughout about a lot using
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: that intel to to really get that detailed information and
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: getting the right setup or know the right time to
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: hunt it. And you mentioned how you're using wireless cameras
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: and all that. Can you elaborate a little bit on
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: where I guess more detail on how you're setting up
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: these cameras for the rut sounds like put them around
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: dough betting area sometimes. But are you placing them on scrapes?
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: Are you're placing them on trails? Are you putting them
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: in feeding ears and bedding ears and falls or or
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: what like? Where are your cameras right now across your
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: properties for the next two weeks? Well, for the next
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: two weeks, my cameras are going to be on the
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: mock scrapes. I may all established scripes on travel corridors
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: that connect cart feeding areas and beating area is and
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: and uh and if I'm finding the dough bending areas
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: I'm putting them there because like I said, they're not
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: they're not actually the bucks right now, the mature bucks,
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: when I say they're Roman and scouting that they're not.
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: They're not going to these though hotspot areas you know
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: at that point to try to get an insterrastow because
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: they know, I mean, the young bucks don't know. That's
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: the ones that think, hey, I'm I'm gonna get to breathe,
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: I want to breath. They're they're chasing everything now. They're
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: chasing any though that will that they see the run,
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: the run them down. They'll try they run them out
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: of the coutry. That's why you start to see a
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: lot of deer on the air state get killed and stuff,
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: because well, let us be the root. Now you've got
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: these young bucks harassing them. That's what's going on. The
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: old bucks know that that's not that's not what's going
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: on now. But what they are doing. They are going
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: to those areas and they are scraped and they're leaving
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: their scent. They let them know I'm here. They wanted
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: those come in and leave their cent and let them
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: know that they're there, and they want to want other
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: bucks are in the area. So they're making those milk runs,
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: going those places and they're monitoring those dolls or where
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: they're at, where they're gonna be. And then when it
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: gets a little bit closer, they're going those areas and
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: sent check them and look for atually astro stowes and
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: they get on one, they'll take her away, bread her,
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: then they'll go get to the nurse spot, got to
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: another spot. I just keep on like a circle, just
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: keep going through those places and looking for the for
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: those are right now. My cameras are on the traveel
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: corridors that are connecting uh feeding areas to known dough
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: betting areas. I've got them over mock scrapes and I've
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: made I've got them over existing scrapes, and I'm running
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: multiple cameras and I'm trying to figure out as much
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: as i can about about each buck. Like the buck
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: I sent you about the other day that came in
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: and worked one of our mock scrapes. He was doing
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: at mid morning on one heat hit one spot. Mid morning,
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: he came off his bed area and he did about
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: mid morns, like ten o'clock in the morning. We've got
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: a great video of him working the scrape. About two
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: hours later we got a mile and a half away
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: at a different spot working another scrape. So they was
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: making that run. And then about three and a half
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: hours later we got him on another camera that closer
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: to where he was bedding, and he had made a circle.
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: Er that's what he what he'd done. I'm not saying that,
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: you know, they're trying to run, I was gonna be
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: in a circle, But I'm just saying aptitude, good scenario.
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: It's like, it's like a circle. That's where he's going.
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: And at those cameras that well, you know, tell me
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: where you know, if I was gonna hut today, where
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: I would probably need to right need to set up
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: at How much detail do you pay attention to with
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: those pictures? Are you looking at just direction of travel
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: and time of day? Do you look at the conditions
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: and try to correlate his behavior based off of something
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: like wind direction or cold friends or bare mutch of
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: pressure that did do you look at any of that
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: thing you just said, every bit of that every it's like, um,
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: it's like putting together a puzzle, and every every piece
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: of information is an important pace. You gotta able to
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: put it all, you know, put it all together, and
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: I'll give an example that you know, my son killed
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: one of the first big bucks. He killed U This
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: is a true story. We got all of it was
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: during the Kentucky uth season, and we've got all at
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: one fifty eight point. It was a giant deer. I mean,
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: it was hard for me not to go both one
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: and I because it was a big deer. And the pattern,
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: the pattern that we got on, you know, with it
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: was and this is it might sound crazy, but you
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: can you can ask him it that that particular buck
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: was feeding on aprons. And once I got on him,
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: I went to put a bunch of cameras out, so
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: I knew kind of where he was staging, and I
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: knew where he was betting at. I knew obviously where
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: he was feeding at and whatnot. And I had a
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: pretty good pattern. But the problem was he was pretty
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: much you know, like most big bucks are, especially you
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: know prior to the rut, he was he was nocturnal.
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: I mean, you know, we were running a highly pressured area.
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: You know, there's a lot of toaching that goes on
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: around there. I mean, the the deer there, like the
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: big deer like ghosts. I mean just you know, sad fact,
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: but that particular deer and that early extuct youth season
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: he was going. Um he would go bed before daylight
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: and on rainy days this is this is I put
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: this together. On rainy days he would get off the
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: bed about mid morning and would sneak into that acron
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: flat and neath those aprons. I mean, like clockwork. I mean,
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: over about three week period, I noticed that the sometimes
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: the only daytime activity was on rainy day days. Mid
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: morning he would he was sneaking or eat acorns for
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: about you know, thirty or forty mints and he got
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: back in bed and um, as luck would have it,
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: on the open day of Kentucky you season, Uh, they
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: would calling for rain and I came here, my wife
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: telling me, you make sure make sure he doesn't get
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: you know, he was probably at the time I thought
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: he was, I want to say, eleven years old to
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: my random there, you know, and Mommy was being protected her.
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: She's like, oh, you're gonna get him wet. You know.
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: He makes you make sure you are you on a blind.
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: I know we don't. We don't have a blind. I said,
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: if you've got gortex, rain outfit. I said, it's not
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: gonna be too cold. I said, we have to hunt
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: during this rain. That's when that deer is moving. You know. She's, well,
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: I know you do that because he just a little kid.
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: And and uh she she said, you'll get him where
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: he will he won't even want to go. That's definitely
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: not what's happened now, you know, I'm trying to keep
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: him out of the woods. Is a hard thing now,
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: you know, after after do it all that. But anyway,
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: so we got set up. It was gonna rain, and
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: I told him I should just be patient, and but
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: we got in our way before daylight, just to make
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: sure we didn't bump anything and thing like that. And
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: I told him us now that if if what I'm
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: thinking is right, I said, this deer will show up,
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: you know, about mid morning. I said, we met. I
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: see a lot of activity you know from you know,
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: at daylight on, but at mid morning he subjects to
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: show up. So we sat there. We were sitting on
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: the ground, had a little makeshift bline, were sitting in
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: a high pressure area. I didn't want to put up
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: a blind for people other people see her hunt because
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: there's a lot of people down here, and no tourist
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: whom they see a blind or see a stand or
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: trying to hunt us close to as they can. They
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: figure that guys put a stand or blind there for
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: a reason. So I'm won't try to hunt cross. I
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: try to avoid that. In those highly pressures that we
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: had a little makeshift blind natural stuff I've cut and
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: you know, blended us in good. We could move. We
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: were sitting, they were sitting there. He was almost in
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: my lap. I'm he sitting run aside me. We sat
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: there and it rained and rained and rain, and we
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: were getting wet, and we weren't seeing a whole lot.
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: And I think at nine thirty in the morning, which
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: is between nine and ten, we were getting most of
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: the pictures on those rainy days. And he came just
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: like hawkwork and he kills and I, you know, I've
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: got all those cameras runna be different. I just had
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: one camera out and you know, it was tending what
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: I was saying. But we had, you know, probably ten
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: cameras outlet on that deer, you know, and I knew
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: exactly what it what it was doing. And at that
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: point that went opportune. We had is when it was
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: it would come out when it was raining. And there's
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: little stuff like that no matter what time of the season.
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: It isn't what time of the year and what phase
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: of the ruts you could put. Um that they've got habits,
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: I mean, they've got they've got habits and stuff that
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: they do. There's tendency that they follow. I mean. And
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: the more cameras you get out and the more stuff
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: you piece together. And the good news is is the
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: cameras that are out today are unbelievable. I mean, the
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: one I just what I'm telling you about this, one
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: of the ones I've just now checked. It's got the
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: baramedic pressure, the wind. It will tell you the wind direction,
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: the phase of the moon. Um, all that stuff on
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: there and not not just the time and date and
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: all that and and and send it to your phone
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: where it's in real time. And and that saves me.
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: I'm to go, you know, contaminated areas a lot of
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: you know, scent noise and stuff, trying to go and
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: check cameras and stuff because I can check it right
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: there on my phone. And if I've got to work Monday,
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: Tuesday and Wednesday and during that time, you know, during
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: that three day period, and I think about maybe calling
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: in sick on Thursday, and in the three days prior
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: to that, you know that the buck has done you know, X,
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: Y and Z, and I know what he's doing probably
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: on that Thursday, and when I take a sick day,
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: I've got a good chance of chance of killing, you know,
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: because I know what I'm doing in real time. I'm
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: not having to take a day and go in the
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: field and check a camera. I'm you know, right at home.
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: I'm knowing what you know, no one what's going on.
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: The truth of the matter is, if I could afford
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: them every trial camera I have, the the wireless scam. Yeah,
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: they're very handy tool. Yeah, but the bad thing is
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: where I'm at in the mountains, there's we've got a
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: lot of areas that you just don't have sales service from,
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: no matter if it's Surprise or a T and T
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: or whatever. You just don't know. There's just dead zones
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: where you you know, there's not any towers and bad
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: thing that user were you know, those are remote areas
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: that used were a lot of the big deal. Yeah,
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: so you don't you don't have to sell off claim.
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: But even with not that you know, I've I've probably
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: got everybody knows that if they don't want to get
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: me for Christmas, for my birthday or something like that,
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: they buy me a trio came I mean, and I'll
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: take I don't care what kind they are, there, the
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: cheap forty dollar kind. I'll take every one I can
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: get because they're a vital pool. And I'm not saying, Um,
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: there is a mistake that people make, you know, by
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: thinking I'm not hunting because I don't have you know
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: that you know that the choke cameras don't get everything.
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: I don't care what model they are, how expensive they are,
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: what their trigger speed is, how sense than they are. Um,
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: I'll chock and you just because you put a choke
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: camera up doesn't mean that you've got all that too.
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: Just taken place where you've got that choe camera up.
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: I mean, I've been a situation, has been in the
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: stand and I've seen shooter bucks that we're all around
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: the camera but never got in front of it, you know,
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: not intentionally. It wasn't like they knew that the camera
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: was there anything like that. It's just the way they
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: were feeding, the way they were moving and they those
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: got in front of them and everything else, and and
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: the bucks didn't get in front. So you can't go
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: solely on that by no means. But the more cameras
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: you have out, the more clues you can gather, the
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: more pieces of the policy put together, you can you know,
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: eventually solve it and you can get a shot. And
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: so I try to I look at all that, I
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: look at that. You know, what was the Bearmick pressure,
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: when the you know, when I was getting a daytime
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: activity on three of my cameras, what was the Bearmick pressure,
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: What was the wind direction that day? Why was that
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: boat traveling that way? What what direction did he come
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: in from? How long did he stay? Um um? The
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: truck camera scrap and a lot of people they just
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: don't they don't take advantage the full advantage of what
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: all truick cameras can do for him. A lot of
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: people will go out and they'll put up, you know,
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: a trail camera, and they'll get a shooter buck at
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: three o'clock in the morning, and they get them through
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: three nights and it's twelve one, two, three o'clock in
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: the morning, they go put a stand up right there
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: and I'm thinking, unless you're gonna spotlight that there, that
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: that's really not doing you a whole lot of good.
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: You know, that just showed you where that buck is at.
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: So when I get a three o'clock in the morning
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: pitch or what I'm trying to do, I'm say, Okay,
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: he's here at three o'clock in the morning. You know,
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: I'll get out Google Maps and look at it. He
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: come in from, you know, from the north. Where was
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: he coming from? Why did it take him to three
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: o'clock in the morning to get there? You know, was
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: you know, where is he possibly batting it? Where is
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: he possibly where is he going to? What is he easy?
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: Going there? To feed? You need to put all that
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: stuff together and that way, that way you know more
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: of what to do, how to sit up? Yeah, now
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: what about looking at pictures? In past years, we we
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: talked to a lot of folks that are getting more
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: and more into observing annual trends or annual patterns and
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: some kind Is that something you key in on it all? Yep,
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: there's places. I've got places here in my home state,
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: and that the truth of the matter is, if I
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: got laid up and put in the hospital or something,
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: you know, weeks before or a month before you know,
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: the road or gun season or whatever. That if I
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: got able to go, even with that scout or even
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: checking the camera, there's places I know that with confidence
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: i'd go and have a good chance of killing the
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: book because some of the some of the patterns just
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: don't you know, they don't change there in these certain
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: areas during the run. There always will be you know,
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: and they're just big. There's the areas you can kill
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: big books. I mean I've got places I've killed multiple
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: big bucks out of, and yeah I rank cameras and
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: stuff on the same. But the truth matter is that
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: I could have you know, I'd have complete full confidence
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: going and sitting in on even if I had never
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: ran a camera and didn't know anything that was going on.
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: They're just you know there there their rut hotspots, the
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: places that you know the bucks were going on. We're
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: gonna be and especially through here in these mountains um
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: the way because they you know, our I suldn't even
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: say that because of the flat land, low and terrain.
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: It doesn't matter. I mean, there's the particular to train
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: your hunting. There's gonna be features that terrain that will
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: dictate how the deer travel from point A to point by.
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: Food sources will change, hunting pressure will change. That stuff
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: will change. But there's certain things that are gonna be
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: you know, pretty much the same list or just some major, major,
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: you know things that happened like this when comes into
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: logs or you know, or or uh, food sources just
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: completely changed or something like that. All that stuff can
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: can change somewhat. But there's a lot of stuff that
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: will be. You know, you hear about guys that kill
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: big Bucks out of the same stand every year, and
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: and they and a little brag about it. Yeah, I
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: didn't scale, I didn't run a camera, didn't do anything,
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: didn't put out. I just go up there. And I
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: sitting at stand on Open the Morning and Gun season
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: the last four season to kill the book. And and
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: they've just got they've got a really good spot. I mean,
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: they've got a spot that Big Bucks travel through and
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: and you know that they can you can pull it
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: off like that sometimes. But I like knowing the other way.
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: I like no one what's in there, and I'll take
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: luck and I'll take a surprise. I like I like
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: having a buck that shows up that you know, be
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: running cameras for three months and this buck was not
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: on any of us, and he showed up during the run.
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: I'll take that. I like that too. But at the
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: same time, there's also as far as confidence goes, it's
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: a whole lot easier to sit in the place from
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: before daylight till dark. After you've worked hard all week,
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: you're dead tired. Everybody knows how it is. I mean,
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: you know, when you hunt, you know, like we do.
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: You go when you're tired, you go when you're not
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: feeling good. If you have a day off, you better go.
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: You can't kill one off the couch you get. You've
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: got to get out there. But one thing that will
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: help you stay longer in that stand is those cameras.
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: Knowing that there's a you know, a one fifty or
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: one six or one for word is you're wanting to shoot.
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: If you've got that buck on camera and you've got
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: a general I did what he's doing, and and there's
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: you know in your heart there's a good chance he's
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: gonna come through and give you a shot. It's a
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: lot easier to stay all day. That's the truth. Uh
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: So we talked a little bit ago about dough betting
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: years and doe hot spots, and then we're kind of
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: zeroing in on that with cameras and everything. But another
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: one of those big rut uh, I guess rut hot
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: spots that folks like talked about a lot our funnels
- 1:49:26Speaker 1: and pinch points and things like that. And I'm wondering
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: with you hunting and kind of hilly terrain. Um, I
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: gotta believe that's something that you key in on as
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: far as the terrain features can you can you give
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: us the scoop on the types of terrain features that
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: you kean on during the rud and like the specifics
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: of how to set up on that kind of thing, now,
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: sure they What I try to do is during the rut,
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: I'll try to find current feeding, you know, food sources,
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: current feeding areas, and the end what I finally, you know,
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: I'll put cameras on monitorate and you'll get especially if
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: it's the open um. We don't have a lot of
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: agriculture in the mount but we do have some fields
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: and I do put in food plots you know, in places,
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: but it could be acrons, it could be whatever. Wherever
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: I find the food source said, I'll monitory food, soorce
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: with cameras and see that those that are coming in,
- 1:50:13Speaker 1: what times of day they are coming in and whatnot.
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: And then I'll try to find out from the food
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: source where would they potentially be going, you know, the
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: bed and you can you know, do some of that
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: lake working you do at home. You do want Google
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: Maps look at it, say we know there's a here's
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: the feeding area, and over here is a clear cut.
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: You know it's overgrown, it's thick, you know, it's within
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: you know, uh decent walk from there. It's away from
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: the food source. Most are like bend away from you,
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: away from the food source if they can, and um,
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: they trying to figure out, well, how are they going
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: to get from point A to point the water some
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: those places. Then you go in there and and burn
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: a little boot leather and walk around and find out
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: and look for silent, for the worn trails, look for
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: deer dropping, look for leaves, turn up with for tracks
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: how they traveling there. And then when you find a
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: primary travel route, if you use them, put some cameras
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: on it and see what activity is going through, what
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: times of data were going through, trying to connect it
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: to the bed and area and do the same thing
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: there and put some cameras and stuff on there. Um
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: one of my favorite places, uh, some of my favorite
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: spots to hunt, you know, on hilly mountless train. We've
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: got some steep mountains. I mean I live in the
- 1:51:17Speaker 1: heart of that Placian Mounds. We've got some mountains that
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: go four or five benches up. I mean you're at
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: the bottom looking up and you're thinking, you know, there's
- 1:51:23Speaker 1: no way I'm gonna walk to that top, and then
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: like their Turkey season, little gobble four benches up. The
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: next thing you know, you're halfway up the mountain. You
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: know that the deer and you know you you're seeing
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: little pressure is coming from down here. Most people are lazy.
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: You can't get a fuller up there. Most people are
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: gonna walk up there. And then the back of your
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: money of thinking that if I had a big duck,
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: that's where I'd go. Then you go into those areas
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: you start find big rugs and that kind of stuff.
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: But one of the some of the places I like
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: hunting um from right now all the way through Actually
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: the Breen trade phase of the rud is like UM
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: the natural travel corridors in these mountains like saddles, like
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: you have a saddle or or a gap, and um
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: um these deer on these mountain where these mountains working
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: around here. A lot of it's been over the years
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: of we've had some uh you know, coal mining was
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: big and they've they've stripped some of these which is
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: actually it's actually been a good thing for the deer
- 1:52:12Speaker 1: because you've got that transition in between hardwoods into open
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: coast trips and they reclaim and they put all the
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: motive trees on them and those berries of deer eat them,
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: Turkeys eat them, and they had like bed and in them,
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: and there's the clover and and and stuff like that.
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: So you've got the transition between hardwoods into in the
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: coast trip and stuff like that. And um, you could
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: be on top of the mountain, there'll be a holler
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: down on the right side that's that's full of uh,
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: you know, full of reclamation trees and there's clover fields
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: and stuff like that that they go down in. On
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: the other side of the mountain, there's a completely different
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: you know, places that bossol might be a coast trip
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: or might be a farm that's got farm land and
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: stuff on it whatnot. And then if you drove to
- 1:52:52Speaker 1: those places by the road, it might take you forty
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: five minutes. On top of the mountain, you could drop
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: down either one in five I mean that, and and
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: and deer and other. So these deer in the sounds,
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: they can cover a lot of ground, a lot of
- 1:53:03Speaker 1: different ground by by the mounts by traveling on top
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: of the mountains and then dropping off of me, you know.
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: And and uh, we say hollers, I'm a hill building,
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: but the correct association is hollow, so we call them hollars.
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: That they can drop down in one hollar and go
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: down those doughs and come back through and go down
- 1:53:18Speaker 1: to another. And that goes back to that milk run
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: task I was talking about. They'll go to those places.
- 1:53:23Speaker 1: And that's why you always hear about these people saying
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: brand cameras all year. You know, I've got a handful
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: of decent bugs. And then from you know, from last
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: week till now, there's there's been four new shooters show up,
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: you know, and and all where they came from, well
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: they you know, they've come in from a different area
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: that they've had a different core living area. But they
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: know that there's dose in those areas and within reach,
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: and they're gonna go in there and you know and
- 1:53:44Speaker 1: check for those dose. So that's what's going on. Saddles
- 1:53:46Speaker 1: and gaps are good, uh, ridges points and I'm handing
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: up in Illinois. You know, your your text book, your
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: your your bottlenecks and pinch points, all that stuff. All
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: lot of stuff is good. But there's bottlenecks and pinch
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: points stuff everywhere. The key is to find a bottle
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: on that some pinch points and the and the saddles
- 1:54:01Speaker 1: and the gas that stuff that connect you know, we
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: feeding area to the bedding area that the those are
- 1:54:06Speaker 1: traveling in because those areas that when things start cranking,
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: the bucks are going to be in. You tho' looking
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: looking for those? Now, what about setting up on those
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: kinds of spots so you find the right You find
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: the right pinch point of some kind. Maybe it's a
- 1:54:20Speaker 1: maybe it's cover getting shrunk down to a narrow spot
- 1:54:23Speaker 1: between two fields, or maybe it's uh, maybe it's a
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: saddle in the mountains, you find that pinch, how do
- 1:54:29Speaker 1: you go about picking the spot to hunt on that feature?
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: What's going through your mind? That tree? What's on my mind.
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: The first thing in my mind is a or deer
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: using it? You know all that you're using it? When
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: are that? You know? When are they using it? How
- 1:54:44Speaker 1: are they using how they how are they going from?
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: Are they going from east to west, north to south?
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: Which direction? And stuff? What I traveling in? And one
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: of the most important things that told my mind at
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: that time is once I figure that part out, is
- 1:54:54Speaker 1: how am I going to access that area? How am
- 1:54:57Speaker 1: I gonna hunt? And how am I going to exit
- 1:54:58Speaker 1: that area with that buffet deer In the process, I said,
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: it's one of big you know, dear big deer aren't
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: aren't stupid? I mean they didn't get big by being stupid.
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: You know, they're smart. Big bucks are smart, and they
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: can pattern you either and you can pattern them. So
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: if you're not taking any any steps to trying to
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: figure out, you know, how can I enter, hunt and
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: acted these areas of that bump gender process, you're shooting
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: yourself from the foot because no pattern you, they'll figure out.
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: That's when you start getting more nighttime pictures and anything.
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: It's like, well, just coming by my stamp and everything's
- 1:55:30Speaker 1: after dark, Well, more than likely you've hunted that stand
- 1:55:33Speaker 1: or hunted that blind with the wrong wind direction, or
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: you've entered it the wrong way, or you've exited the
- 1:55:37Speaker 1: wrong way, and you've educated him. And now Buck's educated now,
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: and it's going to figure out. And it doesn't mean
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: that that buck's going to leave the country. You know
- 1:55:45Speaker 1: that it takes a whole whole lot for it get
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: a deer to just leave a core area. But what
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: it will do that dear, that deer will know that
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: you know, during these times a day, I do not
- 1:55:54Speaker 1: need to be coming through here because there's a predator
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: here that's trying to ambush me. I do not need
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: to come through here. So but any spot at hunt,
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: because if it's pre rut, rut, post rut, whatever it is,
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: I try to figure out what the deer doing, how
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: they're getting in there, how they're leaving, why are they
- 1:56:11Speaker 1: going through there, what times a day? How can I
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: get to that that area without bumping deer in the
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: process and educating on man A lot of times, I mean,
- 1:56:19Speaker 1: it just seems like it books out this way. The
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: easiest routes here stands not always the best route you
- 1:56:25Speaker 1: know to where you're hunting. And I mean it might
- 1:56:27Speaker 1: be the quickest, not be the easiest. But if you're
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: going through deer, if you're bumping deer, they're bedded, or
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: you're going through you know how the sensitive areas and
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: and and you know when you're alerting er your presidents,
- 1:56:37Speaker 1: you're you're you're doing more harm than good. But a
- 1:56:41Speaker 1: lot of people, um, a lot of people do that.
- 1:56:43Speaker 1: They touch these guys that they don't take in. You know,
- 1:56:46Speaker 1: they have I each time on the spot, I'm on
- 1:56:50Speaker 1: the Weather Channel website, I'm going by our hour forecast.
- 1:56:53Speaker 1: I'm looking at the wind direction, you know, and it's
- 1:56:56Speaker 1: sadly it's not always right. But I'm at least doing
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: that where I've got an idea. You know what wind
- 1:57:01Speaker 1: I need to have to hunt that area, what the
- 1:57:02Speaker 1: deer been doing, So I know all that, how I
- 1:57:04Speaker 1: need to get in, how I need to get out.
- 1:57:06Speaker 1: But a lot of these guys will see hot side,
- 1:57:07Speaker 1: will throw up, they'll pull up a stand or a
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: blind and they'll they'll hunt it every weekend, it doesn't
- 1:57:13Speaker 1: matter what's going on. They hunted every weekend. And they're
- 1:57:15Speaker 1: they're shooting ourselves from the foot because those they are
- 1:57:17Speaker 1: getting educated on that and they're knowing the key times
- 1:57:20Speaker 1: that you're hunting when you're in there, and they're feeling
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: that pressure, and they're gonna make They're gonna adjust their schedule,
- 1:57:26Speaker 1: you know, in order to survive. Their patterns are going
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: to change in order to survive. And that's what that's
- 1:57:29Speaker 1: what they do. Yeah, So you pick the right way
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: to get in and out to these spots. You're thinking
- 1:57:35Speaker 1: about how the deer using it. Now, how do you
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: pick the tree? Well, I picked the tree that's gonna
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: give me the best chance, all right, you know, they
- 1:57:44Speaker 1: have to be a tree. You know, I don't have
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: a lot of the ground, taking a lot of big
- 1:57:47Speaker 1: bugs off the ground. I prefer to hunt at a tree.
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: But that's not always you know, possible. Um, what I'm
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: trying to do, I try to if if if the
- 1:57:55Speaker 1: tree stands set up, I try to find and they're
- 1:57:58Speaker 1: just gonna give me the most opportunities to get a
- 1:58:00Speaker 1: shot within you know, within comfortable bow range. That's that's
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: the first thing. The sacond thing is you know, Um,
- 1:58:06Speaker 1: you've gotta make sure, especially right now, we've got a
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: lot of leaves and stuff on the trees, and leaves
- 1:58:10Speaker 1: are are starting to fall a little bit, but we
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: the fold is still pretty thick. So you can get
- 1:58:15Speaker 1: away with your tree stands ups, you know, put throwing
- 1:58:18Speaker 1: up a tree stand. But when you've gotta gotta take
- 1:58:20Speaker 1: in the mine. You know, here shortly the leaves are
- 1:58:21Speaker 1: gonna start falling, the trees are gonna be bare, and um,
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: you stick out like a sore thumb, you know it.
- 1:58:27Speaker 1: From these places, you've got to have backdrop cover especially.
- 1:58:31Speaker 1: You know, we do a lot of film, and you
- 1:58:33Speaker 1: know I've done a lot of femilar ears. Don't have
- 1:58:34Speaker 1: my aunt's famile whatnot. And you don't just have to
- 1:58:37Speaker 1: hide you. You gonna hide you in a cameraman. And
- 1:58:39Speaker 1: so you've got two stands, you've got double scent. Double
- 1:58:42Speaker 1: isn't always double the movement. So when I hang my
- 1:58:44Speaker 1: tree stands, I I take a drill. I'll take a
- 1:58:46Speaker 1: drill and I'll cut cedar limbs, you know, pine liambs,
- 1:58:50Speaker 1: anything like that. That's gonna give me cover. It's gonna
- 1:58:52Speaker 1: you know, it's not gonna lose leaves, even when it
- 1:58:54Speaker 1: turns brown. It's still gonna laugh cover. And I'll drill
- 1:58:57Speaker 1: them into the tree, you know around me. I'll break
- 1:58:59Speaker 1: up outline good and very seldom do I get bumped
- 1:59:02Speaker 1: up in the tree. So I want to find a
- 1:59:03Speaker 1: place that's in bow range. And then I'm gonna go
- 1:59:07Speaker 1: ahead and and and and go ahead and do that stuff.
- 1:59:09Speaker 1: And even with leaves and stuffup, I'm gonna go ahead
- 1:59:10Speaker 1: do that now. But I don't have to do it later.
- 1:59:12Speaker 1: I might. They're making noise hanging up in lembs. I'll
- 1:59:14Speaker 1: hang them now, even though I've got plenty cover right now,
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: I'll still do that. Every tree stand of mine. You'll
- 1:59:18Speaker 1: see that their cedar limbs and or pine limbs and
- 1:59:21Speaker 1: stuff in there to break up that line of myself
- 1:59:23Speaker 1: and my camera, and and I'll do that. That's what
- 1:59:27Speaker 1: I do. And then i'll map out, you know, it's
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: got a little bit ahead of myself, you know, backing up,
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: I always map out before even hanging the stand of
- 1:59:35Speaker 1: how I'm going to enter it and how I'm gonna exit.
- 1:59:37Speaker 1: You're gonna have get have a game point on how
- 1:59:38Speaker 1: you're gonna do that. If you're going to a stand
- 1:59:41Speaker 1: and or a blind or whatever, and you're bumping deer
- 1:59:44Speaker 1: from the time you go in the woods, and then
- 1:59:46Speaker 1: when you leave your buppeteer again, you're I mean, you're
- 1:59:49Speaker 1: you're just like I said, you shoot yourself in the foot.
- 1:59:51Speaker 1: You're decreasing your chances of getting a shopton at amature
- 1:59:54Speaker 1: bud because like I said, they didn't, they didn't get
- 1:59:56Speaker 1: big by being stupid. They're not gonna they can send
- 1:59:59Speaker 1: something pressure. I can feel it like a pan on you,
- 2:00:02Speaker 1: and I can figure out stuffy out. So you've got
- 2:00:03Speaker 1: to take all that in mine when you're when you're
- 2:00:04Speaker 1: choosing the ruts set up. Yeah, what about this scenario?
- 2:00:08Speaker 1: What if you pick your tree, you put your branches
- 2:00:10Speaker 1: up there, you're downwind of wherever you think the buck
- 2:00:13Speaker 1: is gonna come through. But somehow that big old buck
- 2:00:17Speaker 1: comes rolling through the saddle, he comes over the rise,
- 2:00:20Speaker 1: he starts dropping down towards you, and somehow, despite all
- 2:00:24Speaker 1: your best efforts, he picks you off in the tree.
- 2:00:27Speaker 1: Or or maybe you drew your ball back and the
- 2:00:29Speaker 1: arrow fell off, or something happened and you spook a buck.
- 2:00:32Speaker 1: But it's November. Let's say it's the it's you know,
- 2:00:35Speaker 1: the ruts pumping. You spook that buck out of there
- 2:00:38Speaker 1: during the rut. What are your thoughts on that situation?
- 2:00:42Speaker 1: In the rut, you know, there's there's a couple of
- 2:00:44Speaker 1: different ideas here. Like some people think, oh, you know,
- 2:00:47Speaker 1: the bucks are crazy this time of year. You can
- 2:00:49Speaker 1: you could go right back in there and maybe they'll
- 2:00:50Speaker 1: kill him. Or other people might say, no, he's never
- 2:00:53Speaker 1: gonna walk past that tree again for another month. What
- 2:00:55Speaker 1: do you think about spooking a bucket during the rut?
- 2:00:57Speaker 1: What do you what's the impact going to be? I
- 2:01:00Speaker 1: think every scenario is different. It just depends on There's
- 2:01:04Speaker 1: so many factors on that. I mean, how you spent
- 2:01:07Speaker 1: the book. I mean, did you shoot him with the
- 2:01:10Speaker 1: bow and and and it was it a clean miss?
- 2:01:12Speaker 1: Or did you did you you know, did you scrape
- 2:01:15Speaker 1: my hair off of him? But where he felt like
- 2:01:16Speaker 1: he got shot? Sometimes, you know, somebody misses a I
- 2:01:20Speaker 1: know there's a hunter here in our county that had
- 2:01:22Speaker 1: missed a good duck um the weekend before um and
- 2:01:27Speaker 1: missed it and uh come in the actually the weekend
- 2:01:31Speaker 1: other hunt. It was a uh she she she she
- 2:01:35Speaker 1: shot the deer Saturday, missed it, but it was a
- 2:01:37Speaker 1: clean miss. Didn't hit hair, didn't anything clean miss but
- 2:01:40Speaker 1: the deer blew and ran off And the next day
- 2:01:44Speaker 1: she'd have the understands for that particular wind direction, and
- 2:01:47Speaker 1: she was off work and she wouldn't go. She win,
- 2:01:49Speaker 1: and the deer come back through there about a hour
- 2:01:51Speaker 1: later than it did that. Therefore, once she killed right
- 2:01:53Speaker 1: of the same the same tree and at the same time.
- 2:01:55Speaker 1: Though I found situations myself or stuff like that tappen
- 2:01:59Speaker 1: of the wind the you know what. I hunt in
- 2:02:01Speaker 1: Illinois and Cans of those places, it's a little bit
- 2:02:03Speaker 1: easier to hunt the wind. And this during the mountains
- 2:02:06Speaker 1: because the wind swirls. I mean it might be a
- 2:02:10Speaker 1: you know, a northwest wind or whatnot, but at some
- 2:02:13Speaker 1: time during to day it'll it'll it'll, it swirls and
- 2:02:16Speaker 1: been on the train bounces, all stuff goes back. I mean,
- 2:02:18Speaker 1: you can get It's it's real tricky, you know, the
- 2:02:21Speaker 1: wind when you're hunting hilly and in mountless terrain, and
- 2:02:24Speaker 1: you know, I've I've had there that the winds sported
- 2:02:26Speaker 1: at the wrong time, and I'm I'm, I guess I
- 2:02:30Speaker 1: sometimes a lot of people say I go overboard with
- 2:02:32Speaker 1: sent control, and I tried to. But you know, no
- 2:02:35Speaker 1: matter what, nothing's a h percent. I mean, despite what
- 2:02:39Speaker 1: some advertising might tell you, I mean, I do everything
- 2:02:42Speaker 1: I watched my clothes with the you know, with the
- 2:02:44Speaker 1: the no scent detergent. I wear no cent uh the odor,
- 2:02:48Speaker 1: and I shower, I wear rubber boots. I don't put
- 2:02:51Speaker 1: my clothes until I getting the fell do all that
- 2:02:52Speaker 1: kind of stuff. And and a lot of times, you know,
- 2:02:56Speaker 1: most times it works, but there's some some cases where
- 2:02:58Speaker 1: you're gonna get You're gonna get how good year you're
- 2:03:00Speaker 1: going to get them a high end of the tree,
- 2:03:02Speaker 1: you know, thermals changed, dropped, I made there. There are
- 2:03:05Speaker 1: many things that could happen, you know, where a deer
- 2:03:07Speaker 1: can you know, can detection and bust you. And I've
- 2:03:11Speaker 1: had situations where that, you know, the deer it changed
- 2:03:16Speaker 1: a routine a little bit. I've had it where it changed,
- 2:03:18Speaker 1: it changed it completely. So every every hunt situation is
- 2:03:20Speaker 1: a little bit a little bit different, you know, And
- 2:03:23Speaker 1: I guess one of them the best ways to figure
- 2:03:26Speaker 1: that out is if you have bumped of deers, just
- 2:03:27Speaker 1: keep your cameras on it and and see if it
- 2:03:31Speaker 1: if it's if it's changes routine any so, like if
- 2:03:34Speaker 1: you and I were hunting this weekend and we went
- 2:03:36Speaker 1: to a place and something, you know, something happened we
- 2:03:38Speaker 1: were up in the stand and and right when the
- 2:03:40Speaker 1: buck was coming in, something tell o the tree standing
- 2:03:43Speaker 1: bumped it or or the wind switched and it it
- 2:03:45Speaker 1: went in one of us and it took off and
- 2:03:48Speaker 1: we were gonna hut the next weekend. What I would
- 2:03:50Speaker 1: want to do is model thors cameras through the week
- 2:03:51Speaker 1: and see, well, did that you know the lust pumpany?
- 2:03:54Speaker 1: Did that changes routine? Did it make him come in
- 2:03:56Speaker 1: or after dark? Did he completely changes travel route that
- 2:03:59Speaker 1: you know what happened, And I'll tell you better what
- 2:04:01Speaker 1: you need to you know what you need to do.
- 2:04:04Speaker 1: But there was I mean, every bug everything, Like I said,
- 2:04:07Speaker 1: every situation different. I mean, I'm not long ago. I
- 2:04:09Speaker 1: can't remember the I may get the names of the
- 2:04:11Speaker 1: show or something wrong that they were. I think it
- 2:04:13Speaker 1: might have been Lee and Tiffany. I think that Lee
- 2:04:15Speaker 1: had shot a buck and it may not have been them,
- 2:04:18Speaker 1: but I think it's been several years ago. But but
- 2:04:20Speaker 1: he actually shot the buck and hit it, and um,
- 2:04:22Speaker 1: it was during the rut and it was handling the dough,
- 2:04:24Speaker 1: and um, they couldn't they couldn't find it, and um,
- 2:04:28Speaker 1: I went back got into he was sick, sick, about
- 2:04:30Speaker 1: it went back, got in the same standard. He was
- 2:04:32Speaker 1: just sick, I mean, just manage the that there just
- 2:04:33Speaker 1: to be answer because it was you know, during the
- 2:04:35Speaker 1: rut and whatnot. And the buck comes through there and
- 2:04:37Speaker 1: he killed the chasing another dough and it was it
- 2:04:39Speaker 1: was it was wounded, you know, and it was still chasing,
- 2:04:42Speaker 1: chasing does and he killed it. It It might I'm thinking
- 2:04:44Speaker 1: it was lativity, but it may have been another show.
- 2:04:46Speaker 1: But um, a friend of mine, UM that hides up
- 2:04:50Speaker 1: in Kansas. He killed a lot of big woppy bucks.
- 2:04:52Speaker 1: He's not a TV hunter, he's not a rider, he's
- 2:04:55Speaker 1: not in the industry. And I'll be just a good friend.
- 2:04:57Speaker 1: And he's killed you know, killed some you know, good deer.
- 2:05:00Speaker 1: And he told me a story simular that happened to him,
- 2:05:02Speaker 1: you know, several years ago where he made a he
- 2:05:04Speaker 1: made a bad shot with a bow and U uh
- 2:05:07Speaker 1: and was just sick over it. And um and sent
- 2:05:10Speaker 1: spent two days looking for the deer. Couldn't find it,
- 2:05:12Speaker 1: you know, claude up couldn't find it. And he'd hit
- 2:05:15Speaker 1: a limb and hit it, hit it uh way back
- 2:05:17Speaker 1: and high and uh did got through you know, the
- 2:05:20Speaker 1: vitals or anything, but I mean that you were still
- 2:05:22Speaker 1: hit and it led pretty good and wasn't getting on camera,
- 2:05:26Speaker 1: and it was just sick over and thought about not
- 2:05:28Speaker 1: even going on the next weekend. I mean just I
- 2:05:30Speaker 1: mean he just depressed about it. And but he went back,
- 2:05:33Speaker 1: got in the stand and up killing the deer. I
- 2:05:35Speaker 1: mean the deer come through there on on another dough
- 2:05:37Speaker 1: and um, when they're in the ruts, aer Jenel and
- 2:05:39Speaker 1: stuff's going. And I was done a hunt one time
- 2:05:42Speaker 1: in Illinois, years and years and years ago, and um,
- 2:05:45Speaker 1: Craig Morgan was there and Alex Rutledge and that's back
- 2:05:48Speaker 1: when they were off with HSS and everything and and
- 2:05:51Speaker 1: buy me the hum with them and Alex killed um,
- 2:05:55Speaker 1: he killed a buck over a decoys about this time
- 2:05:57Speaker 1: of the year. He came into a decoy fighting man
- 2:06:00Speaker 1: and came up to the decoy. I'm pretty sure it
- 2:06:05Speaker 1: attacked the decoy and Alex shot it with a boat.
- 2:06:08Speaker 1: And I don't take it an attack to you. It
- 2:06:10Speaker 1: was coming up to it was coming up to it
- 2:06:12Speaker 1: to attack it, and all bristled up. I mean, the
- 2:06:15Speaker 1: drool coming out of its mouth. It's Frankenstein looking walk
- 2:06:18Speaker 1: and he shoots it and makes a good shot on it,
- 2:06:21Speaker 1: I mean smacks it. I mean it goes right to it.
- 2:06:24Speaker 1: And you could see on the footage the deer standing there.
- 2:06:27Speaker 1: It jumps a little bit where he got it, felt
- 2:06:29Speaker 1: the impact of there, but didn't even know it ben't hit.
- 2:06:32Speaker 1: It's sitting there just gushing mud out both sides. It
- 2:06:34Speaker 1: lowers its head and attacks the decoy. It thought the
- 2:06:37Speaker 1: decoy did that to it. It thought that the other
- 2:06:38Speaker 1: bucket somehow did that to it, and it attacked the
- 2:06:41Speaker 1: attacked the bug and it it rolled it and and
- 2:06:44Speaker 1: it got to do that, it kind of jumped back
- 2:06:45Speaker 1: and was looking and sidestepping and looking at going circle
- 2:06:48Speaker 1: around like it was going to hit it again. And
- 2:06:50Speaker 1: it's lake started get a little bit wabbly, and it
- 2:06:52Speaker 1: dropped them and die. They didn't know what it was,
- 2:06:53Speaker 1: didn't know it was it. So I mean, but like
- 2:06:57Speaker 1: I said, on that stuff, he just there's always a
- 2:07:00Speaker 1: sessions to the rule. That's one thing I have learned
- 2:07:02Speaker 1: about hunting in general, and bass fisher and thingl is.
- 2:07:06Speaker 1: You know, over the years, I've had theories in my
- 2:07:08Speaker 1: head that have been proven year in and year out,
- 2:07:11Speaker 1: wrote about them, and all that kind of stuff. And
- 2:07:12Speaker 1: and thought I had a pretty good grass and a thing.
- 2:07:14Speaker 1: And then I find an exception to the rule where
- 2:07:16Speaker 1: you know that that's not always a d percent of
- 2:07:18Speaker 1: the time. It's not always what happens as Yeah, well,
- 2:07:23Speaker 1: I give an example of that. I mean, not the
- 2:07:25Speaker 1: change substry, but hunting around here. I'd always believe and
- 2:07:30Speaker 1: that big big bucks that have survived hunt pressure, survived
- 2:07:33Speaker 1: all the poach and we're smart, you know, elusive a
- 2:07:37Speaker 1: lot of them, you know, nocturnal most of the year,
- 2:07:39Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff. That those deer had a
- 2:07:41Speaker 1: tight core area that they stayed in, and that's what
- 2:07:45Speaker 1: kept them staye They new that area, you know, like
- 2:07:47Speaker 1: you and I know our house. They knew every part
- 2:07:50Speaker 1: of it. They knew how to travel the new work
- 2:07:52Speaker 1: the pressure comes from. The new had to avoid the
- 2:07:54Speaker 1: pressure and new were to bed, and they stayed in
- 2:07:56Speaker 1: that general area. And you know the only thing that
- 2:08:00Speaker 1: changing that pattern was were they were seeing that. And
- 2:08:02Speaker 1: it obviously changed during the rud, you know, whenever we're
- 2:08:04Speaker 1: going to look for those and that kind of stuff.
- 2:08:05Speaker 1: But I mean, they had that core area that they
- 2:08:08Speaker 1: stayed in, and I always assumed that it was a
- 2:08:11Speaker 1: tight a tight area. Well, the last four or five years,
- 2:08:15Speaker 1: my sons killed a couple of bucks. I've killed a
- 2:08:17Speaker 1: couple of bucks that had unique cracks that had you know,
- 2:08:20Speaker 1: like a kicker on the G two or or double
- 2:08:22Speaker 1: brow times or bladed you know, something you can identify.
- 2:08:25Speaker 1: I mean a lot of big deer, a big typical
- 2:08:28Speaker 1: like you know, it's a little like that. We could look.
- 2:08:29Speaker 1: You could get online and punch in big typical eight
- 2:08:33Speaker 1: point white tail bucks and you have hundreds of pictures
- 2:08:37Speaker 1: and and a lot of them. You could lay right
- 2:08:39Speaker 1: on top of the other one, a big typical eight Well,
- 2:08:41Speaker 1: you know there'll be a hundred deer if you find
- 2:08:43Speaker 1: it looked like twins, you know that. But if they've
- 2:08:46Speaker 1: got a unique rack, you know, like with with bladed
- 2:08:49Speaker 1: G two or G three's got a kicker point or
- 2:08:52Speaker 1: double brow, you know, it's very simle. You'll see another
- 2:08:55Speaker 1: deer just identical to that. And we had pictures. He
- 2:08:58Speaker 1: killed a real big buck and I killed a real
- 2:08:59Speaker 1: big buck, and we had a ton of trail camp
- 2:09:01Speaker 1: pictures of them, and uh, hunter's worst nightmare. You go
- 2:09:05Speaker 1: through the places, you getting pictures. I'm consistently and three
- 2:09:07Speaker 1: or four days go by and you don't have a
- 2:09:09Speaker 1: picture of them, So I ran here. When that happens,
- 2:09:11Speaker 1: the first thing we start, you think of the worst.
- 2:09:14Speaker 1: You think somebody's stuck in her and they spotlighted it.
- 2:09:16Speaker 1: You know, it's it's went across the roads. Mother guy
- 2:09:19Speaker 1: shot it. You always you know, nightmare scenarios start unfolding.
- 2:09:23Speaker 1: And and what's happened is that books just moved in
- 2:09:24Speaker 1: the area. And like I was saying, what defied my
- 2:09:27Speaker 1: my theories on these tight quarias that two or three
- 2:09:31Speaker 1: different books that we've killed. Other hunters in our area,
- 2:09:33Speaker 1: if we've killed them, have came up to us and said,
- 2:09:36Speaker 1: man I had choke CHOKEMP pictures that deer I believe,
- 2:09:39Speaker 1: and you get up with them. They they send you
- 2:09:40Speaker 1: the trail camp pictures and look at them and it's
- 2:09:42Speaker 1: your deer. And um example, one of the ones my
- 2:09:46Speaker 1: son killed I got. We we had it on cameras
- 2:09:48Speaker 1: three days in the row. And this is not all
- 2:09:50Speaker 1: people can say we have during the rut, you know,
- 2:09:51Speaker 1: they go everywhere you have, they're their their core libingary
- 2:09:54Speaker 1: does expand on the run. I'm not not that land
- 2:09:56Speaker 1: at all. I've always known that, but this guy was
- 2:10:00Speaker 1: getting pictures of the deer way before the rud way,
- 2:10:02Speaker 1: before the cruising and scouting stage, you know, phase of
- 2:10:05Speaker 1: the road rights to looking for the dose. I mean
- 2:10:06Speaker 1: just when they should be locked in the textbook feeding
- 2:10:09Speaker 1: the bedding area, and I want the properties I'm talking about.
- 2:10:12Speaker 1: It's eleven hundred acres locked up. Uh, there's there's we
- 2:10:17Speaker 1: control it. There's no hunting pressure on it. I mean,
- 2:10:19Speaker 1: we've got food plots. There's there's hard woods, there's there's thickets,
- 2:10:24Speaker 1: there's alamato trees, there's apple trees, or semetries, mental licks,
- 2:10:28Speaker 1: two ponds of creek. I mean, the any kind of
- 2:10:32Speaker 1: terrain or atmosphere a buck would want to be and
- 2:10:35Speaker 1: it's got it could do whatever it wants to do
- 2:10:36Speaker 1: in an area zero hunting pressure. And yet those deer,
- 2:10:39Speaker 1: that dear secret deer was leaving way before, like I said,
- 2:10:43Speaker 1: way before the rud or anything like that, way before
- 2:10:45Speaker 1: it was even thinking about those. It would disappear for
- 2:10:47Speaker 1: two or three days and we start thinking something happened
- 2:10:49Speaker 1: to it. And during that time that guy would get
- 2:10:51Speaker 1: it on camera. It was it was six or seven
- 2:10:53Speaker 1: miles away from from you know what we were hunting
- 2:10:56Speaker 1: at and I know what I know it was that
- 2:10:59Speaker 1: Dear I mean that that particular deer had a kicker
- 2:11:01Speaker 1: on the sea two and had one side had a
- 2:11:03Speaker 1: double brewl I mean, and the guy had a daytime
- 2:11:06Speaker 1: pictures of it, and then he would he would he
- 2:11:08Speaker 1: wouldn't get it on camera for three or four or
- 2:11:10Speaker 1: five days. And during that time we were getting back
- 2:11:12Speaker 1: on camera, and that deer was leaving, not because of
- 2:11:14Speaker 1: hunting pressure, not because of food, because any food it
- 2:11:17Speaker 1: could have been getting up there it had on the
- 2:11:19Speaker 1: on the propect that we were at. But sometimes they
- 2:11:21Speaker 1: just row on and get out and they and they
- 2:11:23Speaker 1: move around. He just like people or some people stay
- 2:11:26Speaker 1: in one state their whole life and only ever leave
- 2:11:28Speaker 1: their count unless they know nless they have to. And
- 2:11:30Speaker 1: then there's other people that just like to get out
- 2:11:32Speaker 1: in Rome. I think dear nature that way too. But
- 2:11:35Speaker 1: all those years, I thought, you know that these big
- 2:11:37Speaker 1: bucks staying in the tight core area. But I've had
- 2:11:39Speaker 1: we've killed four or five bucks here that the other
- 2:11:41Speaker 1: people for sure have had on camera prior to the rut,
- 2:11:45Speaker 1: and even during the post rut. And I might talking
- 2:11:47Speaker 1: about during the secondary part of the rud I'm talking
- 2:11:49Speaker 1: about during the post rut when they really should be
- 2:11:51Speaker 1: locked down to the feeding bed and patting and there,
- 2:11:55Speaker 1: you know, get way out of the area that I
- 2:11:57Speaker 1: thought was a core area. And so they moved a
- 2:11:59Speaker 1: lot more than uh what I thought. So the thing
- 2:12:01Speaker 1: about deering is if you if you're want of these people,
- 2:12:04Speaker 1: you've killed some big deer and and you get cocky
- 2:12:08Speaker 1: and you think you know everything about about deer. And
- 2:12:11Speaker 1: I've never felt that way. I try to learn every
- 2:12:14Speaker 1: time I go in the worlds. I try to learn something.
- 2:12:16Speaker 1: And I do have theories that that I've held true
- 2:12:18Speaker 1: and whatnot on on patterns and behavior and and you know,
- 2:12:22Speaker 1: in tendencies and stuff like that. But there's always exceptions
- 2:12:25Speaker 1: to the rule, always exceptions to the rule, and that
- 2:12:28Speaker 1: so when when you if you think you know everything
- 2:12:29Speaker 1: there is to know, then you're you're you're hurting yourself
- 2:12:32Speaker 1: as a deer hunter, because you need to grow, You
- 2:12:34Speaker 1: need to learn every because and you need to have
- 2:12:37Speaker 1: it in the back of your head and be open
- 2:12:38Speaker 1: mine the best stuff. There's always exceptions to the rule
- 2:12:40Speaker 1: and stuff. So speaking of exceptions to the rule, then
- 2:12:44Speaker 1: and I think you're d right on that um. Speaking
- 2:12:48Speaker 1: of exceptions to the rule, is there anything that you
- 2:12:51Speaker 1: do during the rut that people would think is outside
- 2:12:57Speaker 1: of the ordinary that would be an exception to the rule.
- 2:12:59Speaker 1: Is there anything that you do the other people think
- 2:13:01Speaker 1: is crazy or just you've got them? I guess the
- 2:13:08Speaker 1: which we kind of hit on it a a little bit,
- 2:13:10Speaker 1: the um. I won't think that the different in those concettas,
- 2:13:12Speaker 1: I will try to simulate, like if a buck's chasing about,
- 2:13:15Speaker 1: I'll kind of do that, and I kind of and
- 2:13:18Speaker 1: when I first started doing that, had them and like
- 2:13:21Speaker 1: I said, you feel goof you're doing and there you
- 2:13:23Speaker 1: are stopping through the woods and you're grunting and doing
- 2:13:25Speaker 1: an extra stone bleeping whatnot, You're breaking station duk kind
- 2:13:28Speaker 1: of stuff. You just feel like a moron after doing anything.
- 2:13:30Speaker 1: I hope nobody's seeing this, but it adds realism to
- 2:13:33Speaker 1: your to your setup, in it, in it and it
- 2:13:35Speaker 1: actually you know, it actually works. That's one thing that
- 2:13:38Speaker 1: I do different, But it goes against every I'm always
- 2:13:41Speaker 1: you know, I got kind of got like a sniper mentality.
- 2:13:44Speaker 1: I want to get into a place, you know, quietly,
- 2:13:47Speaker 1: I want to take the shot, make one shot, make
- 2:13:49Speaker 1: an athical shot. Make it count and get out. I
- 2:13:52Speaker 1: make any make any noise I may hit. My dad
- 2:13:54Speaker 1: will be one of that area. Maybe one more and
- 2:13:56Speaker 1: one duck. I want to get any get out. I
- 2:13:59Speaker 1: tried ill he's we talked about, you know, getting to
- 2:14:02Speaker 1: your stands and stuff. I always I take the time
- 2:14:04Speaker 1: to cut out any any briers, clean pass that I
- 2:14:08Speaker 1: can use to get in there and not make anyon ones.
- 2:14:10Speaker 1: Don't even use the flyshlot. I an't get myries without
- 2:14:12Speaker 1: a flyshlot. I will go in. I want to sneak in.
- 2:14:15Speaker 1: I don't want to disturb anything going in or disturb
- 2:14:17Speaker 1: anything going out. And that goes against every fiber of
- 2:14:20Speaker 1: my body. When you get out there and you're breaking
- 2:14:21Speaker 1: sticks and you're grunt and you're making that noise, and
- 2:14:23Speaker 1: because in the back of your money thinking I'm screwing
- 2:14:25Speaker 1: this place up, you know, I'm making all this rack
- 2:14:27Speaker 1: and all this noise, and you know I probably ran
- 2:14:30Speaker 1: a deer off. That's what's what goes through your head.
- 2:14:32Speaker 1: But if, like my son said when he was selling
- 2:14:35Speaker 1: me do at the time he said that, I said,
- 2:14:36Speaker 1: you know, but because he's been in the standing and
- 2:14:39Speaker 1: witnessed that he's witnessed, you know, a buck chasing that
- 2:14:41Speaker 1: I was doing a team and grunt and saying here
- 2:14:43Speaker 1: and I don't do an astra stoll bleak and all
- 2:14:45Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. And when you see melate that
- 2:14:47Speaker 1: and you're breaking the sticks, you're and you're but you
- 2:14:50Speaker 1: go rustle through the waves, and you're trying to sound
- 2:14:52Speaker 1: like deer, you know, trotting through there, trying to sound
- 2:14:53Speaker 1: like it sound like a deer. And he said, you know,
- 2:14:56Speaker 1: close your eyes. That sounded identical to that, and and
- 2:14:58Speaker 1: you know, and it works sometimes. So I one of
- 2:15:00Speaker 1: the guests, I guess the one of the things I
- 2:15:02Speaker 1: think that's kind of it's kind of off the wall.
- 2:15:05Speaker 1: Um uh. One of the other things I do. I
- 2:15:09Speaker 1: think that you'll be a lot different than a lot
- 2:15:10Speaker 1: of people talk about hunting all day and and you know,
- 2:15:14Speaker 1: and they really don't. They'll hunt, you know, before before daylight,
- 2:15:18Speaker 1: and I'll hunt until you know, two or three o'clock
- 2:15:20Speaker 1: in the day and they'll we'll wear down, get hungry
- 2:15:22Speaker 1: and they'll leave. But I'll do a lot of a
- 2:15:24Speaker 1: lot of sense from from before daylight after dark. And
- 2:15:26Speaker 1: it's tough, I mean, it's it's it's tough to do those.
- 2:15:29Speaker 1: But but I mean during the rut you need I mean,
- 2:15:33Speaker 1: you know, pre rut, No, you don't have Tonday lots
- 2:15:36Speaker 1: to dark, you know you do. You need to follow
- 2:15:37Speaker 1: your cameras. They are more on a predictable walk down,
- 2:15:40Speaker 1: you know, pad of feem, the bend pattern. But but
- 2:15:42Speaker 1: when when the rud's end, there's breeding activity, and especially
- 2:15:45Speaker 1: the fact that there are so many other hunters in
- 2:15:46Speaker 1: the woods, you need to stay in there as long
- 2:15:49Speaker 1: as you can stay in there. If you can hunt
- 2:15:50Speaker 1: to day not to dark, do it. You need to
- 2:15:52Speaker 1: stay because you just never know what's going to happen.
- 2:15:55Speaker 1: Hard You hard to argue with that. Just if there's
- 2:15:58Speaker 1: nothing else that comes down down to it. During the rut,
- 2:16:01Speaker 1: it's being in the tree, being there to be present
- 2:16:04Speaker 1: for the opportunity when it comes. Yeah, that's exactly right.
- 2:16:07Speaker 1: You can't kill him at home. I can't shoot them
- 2:16:08Speaker 1: off the couch. You need to be up there and
- 2:16:10Speaker 1: end the past. I hunted with um. I had the
- 2:16:14Speaker 1: moment you two times in my life, and one of
- 2:16:16Speaker 1: the times was during during gunstingy I hunted with which
- 2:16:19Speaker 1: is crazy. I don't recommend that I'm actually I could
- 2:16:21Speaker 1: kill you, but I did it because you know, um
- 2:16:25Speaker 1: you know, I am it out in the ride or
- 2:16:26Speaker 1: I have done TV stuff like that kind of thing.
- 2:16:28Speaker 1: But I've also been a teacher in my whole life,
- 2:16:29Speaker 1: and and and being a teacher you get X amount
- 2:16:32Speaker 1: of sick days and the X amount of personal days
- 2:16:34Speaker 1: and whatnot. And I went to school, you know, definitely sick,
- 2:16:39Speaker 1: because if my principal knew when I was, when I
- 2:16:41Speaker 1: was in the classroom that if I called in sick,
- 2:16:43Speaker 1: I was either going fishing or going on I mean
- 2:16:45Speaker 1: that they do that. I didn't have to lie to
- 2:16:47Speaker 1: I never did tell me, ay, I'm sick. You know,
- 2:16:49Speaker 1: technically you're not supposed to you're not supposed to take
- 2:16:52Speaker 1: you know, sick days to kind of do that stuff
- 2:16:54Speaker 1: that you calate all the sick days and for yours,
- 2:16:56Speaker 1: you know, you can use them, so it's not counting
- 2:16:58Speaker 1: against anybody. So but my prince wasn't I didn't have
- 2:17:00Speaker 1: to fake a call for they knew that that Travis
- 2:17:04Speaker 1: Watter's calling it that he's definitely going deer hunting or
- 2:17:07Speaker 1: turkey unting or bass fishing or something like that. And um,
- 2:17:10Speaker 1: saw went the school definitely stick of save my days.
- 2:17:13Speaker 1: And I've hunted and you can't always control me. I
- 2:17:15Speaker 1: found UH. I used to coach basketball and I was
- 2:17:18Speaker 1: assistant coach on the varsity one year, and and UH
- 2:17:21Speaker 1: played basketball in my entire life, coached that, that all
- 2:17:24Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. And UH, at the time I
- 2:17:26Speaker 1: was coaching, our second string was a lot weaker than
- 2:17:29Speaker 1: the first five. So the varsity coach would want me
- 2:17:31Speaker 1: to take the second string and played, you know, on
- 2:17:34Speaker 1: their team and and scrimmage the first five, and um,
- 2:17:39Speaker 1: you know, because I was a pretty good player and whatnot.
- 2:17:41Speaker 1: I say he'd used me for that. And I've done
- 2:17:43Speaker 1: that a lot and enjoyed doing That's a good exercise
- 2:17:45Speaker 1: for deer and everything. But I remember one year, UH
- 2:17:48Speaker 1: wasn't expecting on doing that and I didn't have my
- 2:17:50Speaker 1: high talk basketball shoes with me, and he said, needs
- 2:17:54Speaker 1: to go to that. We said, we, I know, practice schedule,
- 2:17:56Speaker 1: We hadn't planned on on doing this, but he said,
- 2:17:58Speaker 1: you know, I decide with you know, some things going
- 2:18:01Speaker 1: on wrong. I need to see it. You know, when
- 2:18:03Speaker 1: a game scenarios, I need you to go today. I said, coach,
- 2:18:06Speaker 1: I ain't going. I don't have my eyetops. He said,
- 2:18:08Speaker 1: he's where did you? We'll just go, you know, a
- 2:18:10Speaker 1: quarter or two, he's, I just need to see a
- 2:18:11Speaker 1: couple of things you said, He said, you should be
- 2:18:13Speaker 1: all right. Played the whole life. I've had stitches. Well,
- 2:18:16Speaker 1: I dove all those balls and elbowed all that kind
- 2:18:19Speaker 1: of stuff. Never had a turned ankle's aggressive as I played?
- 2:18:22Speaker 1: Ever had a turned ankle, Bobby Dagon if I didn't.
- 2:18:25Speaker 1: But the third play into into a scrimmage, and I
- 2:18:28Speaker 1: turned my ankles on back. I mean it swell ups,
- 2:18:30Speaker 1: so back and then get my shoe on, and uh
- 2:18:33Speaker 1: I got my boot on. I thought that ever happened
- 2:18:35Speaker 1: on a Friday Saturday morning, hunted and I killed a
- 2:18:37Speaker 1: deer and my cut. I never forget this. My cousin
- 2:18:39Speaker 1: killed up to me and and he drove in that
- 2:18:41Speaker 1: place separately. And back then where we sign up we
- 2:18:44Speaker 1: have seal reservice. We had the you know the radios,
- 2:18:47Speaker 1: the Waltman radio's type dealing. And I've raid up to
- 2:18:51Speaker 1: my killed one and I was headed out and he said,
- 2:18:53Speaker 1: I'll meet you back at the truck. And I considered
- 2:18:54Speaker 1: pulling that deer. He said, but what's wrong with did
- 2:18:56Speaker 1: you hurt yourself? And I said, I hurt myself Friday.
- 2:18:58Speaker 1: I told him what I did. You can just try
- 2:19:01Speaker 1: to take with a lot about too bad. Well, I
- 2:19:03Speaker 1: pulled my boot off the show him and just he
- 2:19:06Speaker 1: said here and he's I cannot believe you're in the wood.
- 2:19:08Speaker 1: He how you even walk? I mean we look like
- 2:19:10Speaker 1: a balloon. But you know, you gotta you gotta do
- 2:19:12Speaker 1: what you gotta do. You know, I could have laid
- 2:19:14Speaker 1: there at home, felt surf myself and my ankles heard
- 2:19:16Speaker 1: or you know, I'm wore out. I've had a rough
- 2:19:18Speaker 1: week at work and we've all been there. We've all
- 2:19:20Speaker 1: been It's hard to work hard all week and then
- 2:19:23Speaker 1: get up even earlier on a Saturday, you know, and hunt.
- 2:19:26Speaker 1: But if it's during the rut, you know, if you
- 2:19:28Speaker 1: love deer hunting like we do, you've got to be
- 2:19:30Speaker 1: out there. I mean, it's just stoll is to it.
- 2:19:32Speaker 1: Perseverance will kill you more dear than then then out
- 2:19:36Speaker 1: anything else you can do, and you've got to, You've
- 2:19:38Speaker 1: got to. You've just gotta put yourself in the in
- 2:19:40Speaker 1: a situation where you can get a shout opportunity, and
- 2:19:42Speaker 1: you sure can't do that at home. Yeah, that that
- 2:19:44Speaker 1: might be the best run hunting advice we've had yet.
- 2:19:47Speaker 1: And that's pretty fitting place to wrap it up to.
- 2:19:50Speaker 1: So now, Travis, this has been this has been great.
- 2:19:53Speaker 1: I've I've really enjoyed it. So so thank you for
- 2:19:56Speaker 1: taking into we're talking to you today. I said I
- 2:19:58Speaker 1: could do this. I could do this all day long.
- 2:20:00Speaker 1: I mean, um, kind of get excited sometimes you're talking.
- 2:20:04Speaker 1: When you bring up a certain scenario or something about
- 2:20:07Speaker 1: twenty different things right there your head, you just can't
- 2:20:09Speaker 1: just can't cover at all. But I think we've done
- 2:20:11Speaker 1: a pretty good job today, you know, covering, covering. You know,
- 2:20:15Speaker 1: the taxes of the people need running ow to get on,
- 2:20:17Speaker 1: get on the big one to kill one all the
- 2:20:18Speaker 1: way up through the through the end of the rut.
- 2:20:20Speaker 1: So yeah, and I'm gonna try I'm heading out probably
- 2:20:24Speaker 1: about half hour and head out and get after it myself.
- 2:20:26Speaker 1: And I might try that rubbing or grunting rub idea
- 2:20:30Speaker 1: if I see my big my big target buck off
- 2:20:32Speaker 1: in the distance. So I'll let you know if that works. Yeah,
- 2:20:35Speaker 1: keep me posts, man, I hope you helpe you knock
- 2:20:36Speaker 1: him in the dirt. Appreciate Travis well, if folks want
- 2:20:39Speaker 1: to read your writing or see the things you're up to,
- 2:20:42Speaker 1: is there any particular place they should keep an eye
- 2:20:44Speaker 1: out for that in the future. Yeah, there's a at
- 2:20:47Speaker 1: do a lot of oracles from North American whitetail do
- 2:20:49Speaker 1: outdoor life, the stuff with the bugs on the out
- 2:20:51Speaker 1: in their life, you know, stuff like that, And you
- 2:20:55Speaker 1: can probably just google my name. I think a lot
- 2:20:57Speaker 1: of the some of the shows or if stay buried
- 2:20:59Speaker 1: on the TV and stuff like, they rerun them on
- 2:21:00Speaker 1: where you can get them online. And some of my
- 2:21:02Speaker 1: hunters and stuff wrong a lone where you can look
- 2:21:06Speaker 1: them up and watch the end of that kind of thing.
- 2:21:08Speaker 1: But um, you usually google on that you can put
- 2:21:12Speaker 1: up some articles and stuff. They can taking a lot
- 2:21:14Speaker 1: of the magazines you know about did they put a
- 2:21:15Speaker 1: lot and put them online? If they come off the
- 2:21:17Speaker 1: off the standing out the magazine put them online, so perfect.
- 2:21:20Speaker 1: A lot of stuff after like that. So all right, well,
- 2:21:23Speaker 1: I'll make sure to let folks know where they can
- 2:21:26Speaker 1: they can find all that. And I've been following you
- 2:21:28Speaker 1: for years and I've always enjoyed your your perspective and
- 2:21:31Speaker 1: the articles you've written, so thanks for doing that. I've
- 2:21:34Speaker 1: done the same to you. I trying to follow you.
- 2:21:37Speaker 1: I didn't. I didn't realize that I get your podcast
- 2:21:40Speaker 1: live there. I'm gonna start listening to a lot. It's
- 2:21:43Speaker 1: a you know, out of me on to do it.
- 2:21:45Speaker 1: I mean, I throw done some research out look at
- 2:21:47Speaker 1: the man, You've got a good thing going. I'm gonna
- 2:21:48Speaker 1: definitely be checking in out from here on out. Yeah,
- 2:21:50Speaker 1: I appreciate that we've It's been a lot of funs.
- 2:21:53Speaker 1: Definitely give me an opportunity to learn from a lot
- 2:21:55Speaker 1: of great hunters. And uh, i'd say today we add
- 2:21:57Speaker 1: one more list, So we thank you. Do you wanna
- 2:22:01Speaker 1: do you want to hear one joke before we go,
- 2:22:05Speaker 1: I'll give you a deer hunting joke. There was a
- 2:22:08Speaker 1: these two guys were hunting in a certain area and
- 2:22:10Speaker 1: they got all of this this monster buck boon a
- 2:22:13Speaker 1: truck at buck, you know, buck of a lifetime, and
- 2:22:17Speaker 1: they both had permission up there area and and everything,
- 2:22:20Speaker 1: and they were decided that you know that they would
- 2:22:23Speaker 1: flip for it. Who was gonna get to kill it?
- 2:22:24Speaker 1: You know that would feel if they wanted to film it,
- 2:22:26Speaker 1: they want filming for a show. I thought, if they
- 2:22:28Speaker 1: just wanted to have it, you know, have that hunt
- 2:22:29Speaker 1: as a as a keepsake. So they flipped for it.
- 2:22:32Speaker 1: One guy. One other guy lost, and they were gonna
- 2:22:35Speaker 1: hunt for that weekend. Um Li was up in the
- 2:22:38Speaker 1: weekend and gun Steasons. They going there and they they
- 2:22:42Speaker 1: got a blind up overlooking this little winter wheat field.
- 2:22:45Speaker 1: It's adjacent to this road. It goes up against this
- 2:22:47Speaker 1: big thicket, and that buck had been coming out right
- 2:22:49Speaker 1: there near the road and coming right out, you know,
- 2:22:51Speaker 1: in the in the morning times of Teton and and
- 2:22:53Speaker 1: and you know said check for those looking for those
- 2:22:55Speaker 1: and whatnot. And they had it on camera. So they
- 2:22:58Speaker 1: were just you know, fired up about Erica. They knew that,
- 2:23:00Speaker 1: you know, they were gonna get it on film. And
- 2:23:02Speaker 1: the guy's gonna get to shoot it. So they're getting
- 2:23:04Speaker 1: their way. Poor daylight gets set up. They're up there
- 2:23:07Speaker 1: in a in a shooting house. They put my big
- 2:23:09Speaker 1: shoot house up and they're gonna do it right, you know,
- 2:23:11Speaker 1: I'll be in beverefit rain or whatever. They're gonna get
- 2:23:13Speaker 1: out there. So they're up there in the shooting house
- 2:23:14Speaker 1: and everything's going on, and in uh start breaking daylight
- 2:23:18Speaker 1: first part of the morning. They seen some doughs whatnot,
- 2:23:20Speaker 1: and and a little activity and got up that bed morning,
- 2:23:24Speaker 1: you know, and they've been getting a lot of bid
- 2:23:25Speaker 1: morning active younger trail cameras something. You know, this this
- 2:23:28Speaker 1: is gonna be it, sure enough, ten thirty levenclock in
- 2:23:31Speaker 1: the morning. Buck steps out there. It is how you're
- 2:23:35Speaker 1: yawing it? How yall? The guy gets carried. Yeah, I'm
- 2:23:37Speaker 1: on I'm on it, I'm on it. And he and
- 2:23:38Speaker 1: he said, let's get some potage. Other it sits out there,
- 2:23:40Speaker 1: it comes out, you know, real cautious life. And I'm
- 2:23:42Speaker 1: looking around and cool up. Tharrel goes up to a
- 2:23:45Speaker 1: doll and and uh comes up in behind her and
- 2:23:48Speaker 1: she kind of trots off and and it's standing out
- 2:23:50Speaker 1: there and they're getting all that on film, and the
- 2:23:52Speaker 1: guy clicks his safety off. These guys are gonna up
- 2:23:55Speaker 1: from the shooting sticks and is getting ready to shoot
- 2:23:58Speaker 1: and he looks up to the porners hire comes but
- 2:24:01Speaker 1: the traffic down that road. But they were used to
- 2:24:03Speaker 1: that traffic, you know, their backs were to that road,
- 2:24:05Speaker 1: so they didn't freak you marrything. But he looked and
- 2:24:08Speaker 1: it was a funeral procession, you know. Flags up on
- 2:24:11Speaker 1: the on the car, lights on you you know, other
- 2:24:14Speaker 1: cars were pulled up to the road. It's went up
- 2:24:15Speaker 1: through there. The guy looks at it, looks back through
- 2:24:19Speaker 1: the scope, looks back at the cars again, looks back
- 2:24:22Speaker 1: at his scope, and his buddy's thinking, why is he
- 2:24:23Speaker 1: not Why is he not shooting it? Why is he
- 2:24:25Speaker 1: not shooting it? So he he looks back at the
- 2:24:28Speaker 1: at the funeral session again, stops, takes off his hat,
- 2:24:32Speaker 1: puts up against his chest, bows his head, and starts praying,
- 2:24:35Speaker 1: you know, then a little silent prayer. And his buddy
- 2:24:37Speaker 1: just can't believe it. You know, those guys that die
- 2:24:39Speaker 1: hard hunter, they've looked for the all season. There the
- 2:24:41Speaker 1: buck is he could shoot it, and and and he's
- 2:24:44Speaker 1: doing They just couldn't believe he's doing that. So, uh,
- 2:24:48Speaker 1: the buck left during that time, and he didn't get
- 2:24:50Speaker 1: the shot, and the cars went by, and and the
- 2:24:53Speaker 1: buddy said, man said, I'm kind of proud of you
- 2:24:56Speaker 1: in a way because you know that I showed great respect,
- 2:24:58Speaker 1: you know, for that funeral things. But I just I
- 2:25:00Speaker 1: just can't leave. You didn't shoot it. I just can't
- 2:25:01Speaker 1: leave you didn't shoot that deer. And he said, well,
- 2:25:04Speaker 1: he's like I kind of failed. Obligated. He said obligated
- 2:25:07Speaker 1: And he said, what do you mean obligated to shower? Said,
- 2:25:09Speaker 1: what are you talking about? He said, well, man, listen,
- 2:25:11Speaker 1: he said. I was married to her for twenty five years.
- 2:25:19Speaker 1: He was at the run like that. I got Runnell
- 2:25:25Speaker 1: Rod Pronty. That is a good one. I didn't know
- 2:25:29Speaker 1: where that was going so thoroughly. That is a good man.
- 2:25:38Speaker 1: I'll let you go. We had again. Be sure to
- 2:25:40Speaker 1: keep me posting on how much you're seeing, and I'll
- 2:25:42Speaker 1: do the same. I'm I'm getting fired up. I'm gonna
- 2:25:44Speaker 1: try to hunt something. We've got a big co front
- 2:25:45Speaker 1: coming in Friday and and I'm gonna try to get
- 2:25:47Speaker 1: on one this this weekend. So make it happens. Sounds good, well,
- 2:25:52Speaker 1: good luck and shoot straight all right, man, you too,
- 2:25:55Speaker 1: And there you go, my friends, Another one in the books.
- 2:25:57Speaker 1: Hopefully this will help a lot of you in the woods.
- 2:26:00Speaker 1: We've got if you're listening to this right when it drops,
- 2:26:02Speaker 1: We've got three weeks left of November, lots of rut
- 2:26:05Speaker 1: hunting ahead of you, So get out there, hunt hard,
- 2:26:08Speaker 1: have a good time. Don't get too stressed. I know
- 2:26:11Speaker 1: I have a tendency that as the as the rut continues,
- 2:26:14Speaker 1: every day flips off the calendar. I start feeling more
- 2:26:17Speaker 1: and more pressure because the rut is falling behind me.
- 2:26:19Speaker 1: Now we're seven days down, we're ten days down, we're
- 2:26:22Speaker 1: fifteen days down. You start to worry it's ever gonna happen.
- 2:26:25Speaker 1: Don't be like me. Just enjoy the moment, get out there,
- 2:26:29Speaker 1: putting the time, and good things will happen. So until
- 2:26:32Speaker 1: with yet again, next time, thank you for listening, and
- 2:26:35Speaker 1: stay wired to hunt
