- 0:10Speaker 1: Hey, what's up everybody. Welcome into this edition of to
- 0:12check O Daily. Andrew decheco here and you probably already
- 0:17heard the postgame podcast with Jeff Adam and myself where
- 0:20we collaborated and gave our immediate reactions to the game.
- 0:25But I wanted to give you guys one here, just
- 0:28a quick one with some of my musings now that
- 0:30I've had some hours to sort of digest the game.
- 0:33Not a pretty game. I call it a grimy win
- 0:36for the Eagles, but they've proven that they can win
- 0:39in a multitude of ways, which I think is actually
- 0:43fascinating because every game is seemingly different. And I look
- 0:46back at last season the Stewers game where they threw
- 0:49the ball all over the yard, and then they can
- 0:52win those grinded out type of games, or a game
- 0:54like they want to against the Browns, which effectively turned
- 0:59things around where Jalen Hurts wins, ends the game, calls
- 1:03game with a deep shot to AJ Brown. But let's
- 1:06look at the game yesterday in Kansas City in a
- 1:09hostile environment. Look, I based off of what I've seen
- 1:15and heard over the past I don't know twenty four hours.
- 1:19Kevin Patulo is not very popular. But I'm here to
- 1:23tell you that it's been two games. It's been two games,
- 1:27and this is the same play caller, a first time
- 1:30play caller, by the way, that engineered or presided over
- 1:36three consecutive scoring drives to start the season in the
- 1:39opener and had the offense largely humming prior to that
- 1:44lightning delay. But then in Kansas City, the passing game
- 1:49left a lot to be desired, and honestly it did
- 1:51in Week one as well. But I thought jaywhen Hurts
- 1:53was really efficient in distributing the football and they got
- 1:56off to that fast start, which was always good to see.
- 1:59But in Kansas City, that's where this was going to
- 2:03be always going to be a big test for Kevin Patulo,
- 2:05And I just thought that while the offense looked largely
- 2:09clean from an operational standpoint, getting in and out of
- 2:12the huddle, there was the passing game that just had
- 2:17it lacked for innovation, It lacked for creativity. There was
- 2:21the over routes and the slants with aj Brown five
- 2:24catches for twenty seven yards. Devonte Smith of course caught
- 2:27the deep shot which was a twenty eight yard which
- 2:29was really the only pass that Jay when Hurst pushed
- 2:31down the field. But I didn't really think that the
- 2:36passing game was I guess efficient enough. I mean, you
- 2:41could argue that they made the plays necessary when needed,
- 2:44but when you look towards what it could mean for
- 2:47the season, you're gonna have to advance in that part
- 2:50of the game in order for the team to be
- 2:53what they and everyone is expecting them to be. So
- 2:58I have to go back and they watch the coaches tape,
- 3:01they get a better assessment of it. But for Kevin Patulo,
- 3:05it's again, it's been two games. Give him time. This
- 3:08is really the month of September is more or less
- 3:11the preseason. I know that that's not what you want
- 3:13to hear, but the reality is is that aside from
- 3:16training camp, this unit, this contingent of players have not
- 3:21repped together in a game situation. The first time they
- 3:24did was, you know, September fourth against the Dallas Cowboys
- 3:27in the opener. So just give it a little bit
- 3:29of time. I've been on the record even when the
- 3:31schedule came out that I highlighted Week five against the
- 3:34Broncos as being a really good indicator as to what
- 3:38the team's identity is on both sides of the ball.
- 3:42But after that first month, that's where things start to
- 3:45reveal themselves in a good way or a bad way.
- 3:48And that's why you have to reserve judgment, as tough
- 3:51as it may be, you have to have a measured
- 3:54thought process with this, and I think that he's going
- 3:57to be able to figure it out. They have enough
- 3:59talent there, and I believe that as he continues to
- 4:01find his groove as a play caller, you're going to
- 4:04see that manifest in a much more cohesive offense. But
- 4:09on the other side of things, we talked about identity,
- 4:11and it seems like this youth infused defense has really
- 4:15rounded into form. It's encouraging to see, and again it
- 4:20highlights and underscores what I've been talking about for a
- 4:23while now, and that is the coaching and the development.
- 4:26And when I look at two young players like Jihad Campbell,
- 4:29the Eagles first round linebacker out of Alabama, and rookie
- 4:33safety Drew mccouba, their rapid rise is something that should
- 4:38be talked about, even a little bit more than it
- 4:40already is. Coming off that win, Campbell was ahead of schedule.
- 4:45He made some plays in training camp, but the more
- 4:47reps that he gets and the more opportunities he got
- 4:50in the summer, and then he saw it really reveal
- 4:52itself in week one. He plays with physicality, he's moving
- 4:57with urgency, and he's seeing things quickly. The ability to
- 5:01read and diagnose and attack the line of scrimmage compliments
- 5:04what the Eagles have already with Zach Bonn at linebacker.
- 5:08But I thought Johat Campbell was all over the field
- 5:11against the Chiefs and really made some tough tackles and
- 5:14he's a hard nosed player, but he's really taken to
- 5:17that position a lot earlier than you might expect a
- 5:20player who, let's not forget, I mean the expected timeline
- 5:24was sometime in August. He was there from the first
- 5:25day of training camp and has really hit the ground running.
- 5:29And then for Drew mccooba, he makes the play of
- 5:33the game, really sort of saving the Eagles from potentially
- 5:37giving up a score and flipping momentum. But Travis Kelsey's
- 5:41unable to hold onto the pass in the red zone
- 5:43and it was almost like Drew mccooba was Johnny on
- 5:46the spot, picks it up, runs forty one yards down
- 5:48the sideline, gets tackled by rookie left tackle Josh Simmons,
- 5:52who is an impressive athlete, and took a really good
- 5:55angle to make sure that he was able to kind
- 5:57of cut him off and knock him out of bounds.
- 5:59But this is what mccuba is here for. This is
- 6:03why vic Vangio showed the confidence that he did in
- 6:07the second round pick starting him in week one, despite
- 6:11maccuba having two injuries in training camp and missing a
- 6:14significant amount of time. Where As Sydney Brown saw the
- 6:18Lion's share of the first team reps, they plugged mccooba
- 6:21in week one. Vic Vangio said he did okay and
- 6:24alluded to a couple of quote unquote major busts, but
- 6:28I thought that he was able to kind of bounce
- 6:30back from that in this game where he had to
- 6:33believe six tackles, a half sack, the interception, had a
- 6:36really nice tackle on a third and one, which I
- 6:38thought was even more impressive than the interception. But it
- 6:42highlights his ability to be around the football. He is
- 6:45a ballhawk. I've mentioned this even during the draft process.
- 6:48He was my third rated safety and I had a
- 6:50late second round great on him, and I know that
- 6:53that may have not been popular at the time because
- 6:55five to eleven eighty six, and I think some maybe
- 6:59viewed him as a third or a late third round pick.
- 7:01But it's the football intellect. He has a very high
- 7:04level football IQ and you accompany that with the versatility
- 7:09and the ball skills, and he plays bigger than his size.
- 7:13So it's really no wonder that he was inserted Week one,
- 7:17and the objective is always to get your best players
- 7:19on the field, and he's a second round pick, so
- 7:22the more reps that he gets, much like Campbell, he's
- 7:25going to continue to get better and grow and develop.
- 7:29But that's what he brings to that defense, the ability
- 7:31to take the football away. When he was drafted, I
- 7:33equated his skill set to that of CJ. Gardner Johnson
- 7:37in some ways because of the versatility and because of
- 7:41the plus ball skills and the way that he moves
- 7:44and the size right, So he's going to start to
- 7:48become much more of a playmaker the more he plays
- 7:52those two players, right, there were really big standouts for me.
- 7:55So too was veteran free agent addition who signed just
- 7:58over a week ago as Arrius Smith, wearing number fifty two.
- 8:02He brought a lot of energy and tenacity to the defense.
- 8:05Picked up a half sack team with Makuba to stop
- 8:08Isaiah Pachecko on a run play early in that game.
- 8:11Was all over the field, played twenty snaps in that matchup.
- 8:14You could tell when we met him for the first
- 8:16time last week that he was raring to get back
- 8:18on the field and even cited the date that it
- 8:21had been since the last time he was in pads.
- 8:24Goes out there, blends in seamlessly with that defense, and
- 8:27I thought vic Vanjo did a nice job of rotating
- 8:30those edge rushers because josh Usha, who was the third
- 8:33edge rusher in the rotation in the opener, also saw
- 8:35some time. He made a couple of plays that I
- 8:37jotted down in my notes while watching that game. N
- 8:41nice tackle on Isaiah Pacheco following a two yard pickup,
- 8:45and was active around the line of scrimmage plays with
- 8:48a lot of I guess relentless effort is probably the
- 8:52best way to say it, because every time he's on
- 8:54the field, as minimal as those opportunities may be, I
- 8:58noticed him making a play. But for Zadarius Smith that
- 9:03looks to be and this is just one game, but
- 9:05based off of what we've seen and you look at
- 9:08the body of work in his career, he now has
- 9:09sixty nine and a half sacks. This was a good
- 9:12addition by Howie Roseman and someone who I believe is
- 9:16going to continue to carve out a larger role the
- 9:18more snaps he starts to play and really get into
- 9:21football shape. And that was really the big question because
- 9:24he hadn't been in a camp or anything like that.
- 9:26But he goes out there plays twenty snaps. I had
- 9:29about fifteen to twenty. It was my estimation on the
- 9:32podcast earlier last week, and that's kind of right where
- 9:36I expected. But I do believe that you're going to
- 9:38see him gradually see an uptick in snaps and be
- 9:42that third as rusher, and you see his effectiveness against
- 9:45the run and how he attacks. He's very physical. Nick
- 9:48Sirianni on Monday refer to him as being heavy handed,
- 9:51and that definitely tracks when you watch him operate on
- 9:55the field. But I just thought the energy was really
- 9:58good on the defense. I think Zadari Smith added to
- 10:00that in a very positive way, and we'll have to
- 10:03wait and see how that progresses from here. But good
- 10:07debut from the veteran edge rusher. A name, I guess
- 10:12I should say A number that I kept writing down
- 10:14in my notes during the game was three. Nolan Smith
- 10:18did a really good job of setting the edge with
- 10:22physicality and violence. The heavy hands that he has for
- 10:26being somebody who's about two hundred and forty pounds is
- 10:29something that should be talked about a little bit more.
- 10:31It doesn't necessarily always showcase itself in the box score,
- 10:36but when watching him play, and he had a nice
- 10:38play on the fourth and one, knifing in to make
- 10:41that stop. He plays with such toughness and physicality, and
- 10:45every time his name is mentioned, you hear Nick Sirianni
- 10:48gush about his toughness and the way that he plays,
- 10:51But it's with a controlled violence, and I just think
- 10:55he uses his hands really well and he has a
- 10:58really good feel for the position. And again that comes
- 11:00with reps, that comes with time, and that comes with coaching.
- 11:04Jeremiah Washburn has done a really good job with those
- 11:07edge rushers. Jordan Davis had another really good game. He
- 11:11was sort of clogging up the middle and being effective
- 11:13against the run at the point of attack. I thought
- 11:16that he was really really physical, and these are also
- 11:20stats that don't necessarily reveal itself in the box score,
- 11:25but it was almost like the Jaylen Carter effect. It
- 11:28just opened things up for teammates. And that is another
- 11:31advantage of having someone of the caliber of Jalen Carter
- 11:35on your defensive line, because Jordan Davis and Nolan Smith
- 11:39are two players that really caught my eye watching that game.
- 11:44And then there's a Dori Jackson. So adri Jackson didn't
- 11:48have a good debut against the Cowboys, right, I mean,
- 11:51he was picked on and he was going up against
- 11:54you know, Ceedee Lamb and George Pickens. But then he
- 11:57goes against the Chiefs that have a lackluster receiving corps.
- 12:01They had a couple of players who were injured, and
- 12:04I thought that largely he did a nice job. He
- 12:07played a lot better, and that's something that I forecasted,
- 12:11much like I've been saying with Kevin Patulo, give it
- 12:14time with the Dori Jackson. I know he's a veteran,
- 12:16but if you're going to afford grace to a lot
- 12:18of other players who are sort of finding it, you know,
- 12:21figuring it out and learning how to play with one another,
- 12:24the same should abide for a Dori Jackson. Granted it
- 12:28was not a prolific receiving tandem or receiving core for
- 12:32that matter, and against the Rams is going to be
- 12:34an obviously even greater test, but it's a positive sign
- 12:38for someone who I know many went into this with
- 12:42some concerns. He was not a liability and he held
- 12:46his own largely so. Tight end Cameron Latsu was a
- 12:51player that I talked a lot about about a potential elevation.
- 12:54He was elevated, and he played six snaps in the game.
- 12:58You can see his nastiness and toughness as a blocker.
- 13:01He definitely brings juice there. Played six snaps in the game.
- 13:04On offense, he was a special team's mainstay along with
- 13:07Kylon Granson, who by the way, did a really nice
- 13:09job on special teams. Eighty three popped up a ton,
- 13:12made a lot of tackles. But for Cameron Latou, he
- 13:16had a nice block, a slice block, which Nick Sirianni
- 13:20talked about in his Monday availability. Two plays before Jalen
- 13:24Hurts scores on the from one yard out in the
- 13:28fourth quarter with about nine minutes left, he on a
- 13:31Saquon Barkie running play takes out Charles Amenahew and really
- 13:35drives him into the end zone. I mean, I've talked
- 13:39a lot about Lattu's toughness as a blocker. He's willing
- 13:43to stick his nose in there and really drive through
- 13:46whoever he's blocking. That showed itself in training camp, but
- 13:50it was that was his first NFL game, and I'm curious,
- 13:53based off of the tape, if the Eagles start to
- 13:56try and find ways to incorporate him a little bit
- 13:59more within the offense, especially when you look at the
- 14:02blocking deficiencies from Grant kal Katara and Kylon Grantson. Now,
- 14:06on the first play of the game, it looked like
- 14:09on the right side, AJ Brown was breaking free and
- 14:12that play never was able to materialize because to start
- 14:16the game, Grant kal Katara whifted on the block from
- 14:19a blitzing cornerback Jay when Watson, Jay when hurts fumbles
- 14:23the ball and it gets all disjointed from there. But
- 14:27I didn't think Grantson and he's not a point of
- 14:29the attack. He's not an inline blocker. That's not his specialty.
- 14:32But I didn't think he performed that well either. The
- 14:34Eagles open in twelve personnel, so depending on what the
- 14:38timeline is forgot it, and we're going to learn more
- 14:40this week because the Eagles are back on the practice
- 14:42field Wednesday, we'll have a better idea of maybe how
- 14:47they're going to approach it, or what the roles are
- 14:49going to be for kal Katara, for Grantson, and maybe
- 14:53even if Latsuo's able to play a handful of other snaps,
- 14:56or if they're able to kind of get him involved
- 14:59in maybe the passing game, or who knows, maybe even
- 15:03as the second title. We'll have to wait and see
- 15:05how it all goes. But this is gonna be another
- 15:07very eventful week for the philadelph vehicles. I'm looking forward
- 15:10to covering it. They have a big game with the
- 15:11Rams coming up Sunday. We'll have all the coverage for
- 15:14you on all the Inside the Birds podcast and on
- 15:17Inside the Birds dot Com and of course right here
- 15:20on to check odaily. This has been to check Odaily.
- 15:24I am Andrew de Checko and I will catch you
- 15:26on the next one.
