- 0:45Hi everybody and welcome back to the show Blue origin SpaceX
- 0:51competitor rocket company. Jeff Bezos is baby.
- 0:56They recently experienced an anomaly during the NS 23.
- 1:00Uncrewed suborbital, spaceflight mission of the new Shepherd
- 1:04rocket, which launched on September, 12 of 20 20, 20 the
- 1:09flight was carrying the capsule, RSS h.g.
- 1:11Wells, and the propulsion module till 3:00, and involve Six
- 1:16payloads including 18 funded by NASA's flight opportunities
- 1:20program. And during the flight, the
- 1:22booster failed during max-q, triggering the crew capsule
- 1:26Escape system and this system, functioned as designed and
- 1:29brought the capsule in its payloads, to a safe landing at
- 1:32launch site. One with no damage.
- 1:35This propulsion module, on the other hand, commanded a shutdown
- 1:39of the be-3 p.m. engine and followed an unpowered trajectory
- 1:43to impact within the defined. And flight safety analysis
- 1:47prediction, resulting in no danger to human life or
- 1:51property. Now, in accordance with the new
- 1:53Shepherd. Mishap investigation plan, blue
- 1:56origin, formed a mishap investigation team, the MIT,
- 2:01which included representatives from Blue origin safety.
- 2:03And Mission Assurance. Organizations the FAA, the
- 2:07national Transportation safety board and NASA's flight
- 2:10opportunities program and Commercial crew office.
- 2:14Now the investigation Concluded that the direct cause of the
- 2:17mishap was a structural fatigue. Failure of the be3 p.m. engine
- 2:23nozzle during powered flight, the structural fatigue was
- 2:27caused by operational temperatures that exceeded the
- 2:31expected and analyze values of the nozzle material testing of
- 2:35the be-3, p.m. engine began immediately following the mishap
- 2:41and establish, that the flight configuration of the nozzle
- 2:43operate at hotter temperatures, And previous design
- 2:46configurations, basically engine got too hot and it failed.
- 2:52Now forensic evaluation of the recovered nozzle fragments also
- 2:55showed clear, evidence of thermal damage and hot streaks,
- 2:58resulting from increased operating temperatures and the
- 3:02fatigue location on the flight nozzle is aligned with the
- 3:05persistent hot streak identified during the investigation.
- 3:10Now, the MIT the term of that nozzle changes made to the
- 3:13engines boundary layer cooling system.
- 3:15Accounted for an increase in nozzle Heating and explain the
- 3:18hot streaks. Present.
- 3:20Blue origin is implementing corrective actions.
- 3:22At this point, including design changes to the combustion
- 3:25chamber and operating parameters, which have reduced
- 3:29engine, nozzle, bulk and hot streak temperatures.
- 3:32Additional design changes to the nozzle haven't proved structural
- 3:35performance under thermal and dynamic loads.
- 3:39Now, the crew capsule and all the payloads on board.
- 3:43Landed safely and will be flown. Again, it all system designed to
- 3:47protect Public Safety function as planned.
- 3:50And there were no injuries during this flight.
- 3:54There was no damage to ground-based systems and all
- 3:56debris was recovered in the designated Hazard Area.
- 4:00Public Safety was unaffected by the mishap and no changes to
- 4:03crew safety system. Designs were recommended as a
- 4:07result of the investigation. Now, blue origin expects to
- 4:11return to flight soon and they'll Reef Li the NS 23
- 4:15payloads. The company has also convened a
- 4:18mishap review board the mrb which included external non
- 4:23advocate. Advisors to review, casual
- 4:25determinations made by the MIT and will continue to exercise
- 4:29oversight of the corrective action, implementation.
- 4:34Now, blue Origins, and s23 mishap was the first complete
- 4:37mission failure of the new Shepherd vehicle and the second
- 4:40inflate anomaly. After the ns1 where the booster
- 4:44crashed upon Landing, while the capsule landed safely though.
- 4:49Now this was the fourth time, the abort motor has been used,
- 4:52and only time outside of testing the three previous times, were a
- 4:56pad abort test and in-flight abort test at Max Q the ns5 and
- 5:01an in-flight test at high altitude.
- 5:03The NS 9, despite the mishap blue Origins commitment to
- 5:07safety. Remain steadfast.
- 5:09They'll continue on in the company's rigorous approach to
- 5:12safety was demonstrated by its prompt formation of the MIT and
