Transcript
- 0:00You are listening to Look Who's Talking.
- 0:18I am Cameron Minter.
- 0:19I am your co-host and the fabulous Jessica Coffie.
- 0:24I'm fabulous today.
- 0:25Our executive.
- 0:26No, I'm not there.
- 0:27See, I just keep going.
- 0:30I should have stopped and fabulous, but oh no.
- 0:33I had to go and get another ad.
- 0:35Hey, what's going on Jessica?
- 0:36Hey y'all.
- 0:37How you doing?
- 0:38She is our host.
- 0:39Welcome, welcome, welcome back.
- 0:40You know it's funny when I hear you say she is our host.
- 0:43Am I?
- 0:44Right, you are the host.
- 0:45I feel like I'm a guest to your show.
- 0:47I'm just running the board over here.
- 0:50If you could run the board, you would be doing it all.
- 0:52Oh really?
- 0:53Yeah.
- 0:54When are you going to teach me the board?
- 0:55Oh anytime boo.
- 0:56Yeah.
- 0:57I want to see you play.
- 0:58I want to see you just, yeah.
- 0:59Don't play.
- 1:00You'll be sitting over here by yourself.
- 1:03What's going on Jessica?
- 1:04Not much Cam Bam.
- 1:06Like you know what we say last show, life be life.
- 1:11Life be life.
- 1:12Yeah, we're just.
- 1:13It ain't even funny.
- 1:14I know.
- 1:15What's been going on with you?
- 1:17Oh, just slow motion.
- 1:19Just surviving.
- 1:20I'm trying to get, oh I'm so desperately trying to get back into a groove.
- 1:25I left my groove in the second week of December and I haven't found it yet.
- 1:29You know what?
- 1:30It is really hard after the holidays because not only have you been like resting for maybe
- 1:36a couple of weeks for the holidays, but then winter weather hit us so hard that we had
- 1:45another extra week.
- 1:47Well, it wasn't off, but it wasn't in the office.
- 1:50I am really just struggling trying to get back to the groove.
- 1:55Every time I get there, I'm almost there, something happens.
- 1:59No, I'm not almost there.
- 2:01I'm far from it.
- 2:02I'm far from it too.
- 2:03I am far from a groove, but I have to find it quick.
- 2:07I mean we got to.
- 2:09Work has got to get done.
- 2:11Because the day seemed like they last 45 years and it's only eight hours.
- 2:18But when you're busy, when you're in your groove, the day goes by quick.
- 2:23No, I've been busy and look up and it's 10, then I look up again and it's two, then I
- 2:28look up and it's only two 15.
- 2:31I'm with you on that.
- 2:33It's hard after the holidays, but you know what?
- 2:37We've gotten so much snow that I'm ready for spring.
- 2:42Come on birds.
- 2:44I am ready for my allergies to be messed up.
- 2:47Wow, that's saying something.
- 2:49That's how much I'm over winter.
- 2:51That's saying something.
- 2:54So I see you're doing some new styling and profiling.
- 2:58Well, it's not new, but-
- 3:01It's original, huh?
- 3:02I took off my nails.
- 3:04Oh no, put the dope.
- 3:09Dope?
- 3:10Yeah, that's how I feel without my nails right now.
- 3:12Really?
- 3:13I've been with them for probably 15 years straight and over the break, I broke two.
- 3:20I broke two.
- 3:21How?
- 3:22I don't know.
- 3:23That ain't nothing, right?
- 3:24You just go and get them repaired, right?
- 3:25No.
- 3:26So I go to, I don't go to a shop.
- 3:28I go to an entrepreneur and she was out of town and it was Christmas break.
- 3:36So I was like, oh, okay.
- 3:39I was like, you know what?
- 3:40You took them off yourself, didn't you?
- 3:42Because it was hard to type with two broken nails.
- 3:45So I took them off.
- 3:48I had them taken off and I was like, oh, I haven't seen my little fat fingers by themselves
- 3:54in years.
- 3:55So I want my real nails to grow out to be a little bit stronger.
- 4:01Yeah, but I think I'm going to get nails in about two weeks.
- 4:04Wow.
- 4:05Yeah.
- 4:06You know, it's funny.
- 4:10It's something that you really don't think about until you think about it.
- 4:14I mean, if I shaved my mustache, it would be a huge change that I would not like.
- 4:20I don't think I would like it either.
- 4:22Hold up.
- 4:25So like, did you do the no shave November or any of that?
- 4:28I don't participate in none of that.
- 4:30See, I, you know, I've got a small little bit here.
- 4:34I keep telling my barber not to give me the chin strap.
- 4:37Yeah.
- 4:38Because my hair doesn't grow properly here.
- 4:41You know, we get this, right?
- 4:43And so then he tries to cut, you know, real close.
- 4:46No, leave all of that because that's the only place my hair is going.
- 4:50And so, you know, I've gone close and...
- 4:53Cam, what would you look like with no facial hair?
- 4:56I don't want to know.
- 4:57I don't want to know.
- 4:58I don't think I do either, but it would be fun to laugh at.
- 5:03Yo, so my dad, I don't know what made him do this.
- 5:10I don't, and he never has done it again.
- 5:13Right.
- 5:14But I think he might nicked himself where he had to shave off his mustache.
- 5:18That's the only way it's happening.
- 5:20I was like, I had no idea you didn't have an upper lip.
- 5:24Right.
- 5:25Where'd it go?
- 5:26So he made sure he never made that mistake again.
- 5:30I was like, Dad, this is not the look for you.
- 5:34I mean, you know, but just as you were saying, 15 years of nails and then the change, although
- 5:41the change is natural and normal, you don't like it.
- 5:45Right, right.
- 5:48My fingernails are an expense that I will go for.
- 5:53Like, you know, for years I didn't have internet.
- 5:56No, I didn't know that.
- 5:59Like, not too long ago, like I was like, I'm not going to get into all of this.
- 6:07And then I like went Instagram came, I said, Oh, I need internet.
- 6:12But like I use my phone mostly.
- 6:16But now with the smart TVs and things like that, I'm like, Oh yeah, I need internet now.
- 6:22But like there's things you can go without.
- 6:25You just don't realize.
- 6:26Yeah.
- 6:27But the older, the more advanced in technology, the older I find myself because I remember
- 6:34when we didn't have it.
- 6:36Oh, absolutely.
- 6:37I remember calling information instead of Google.
- 6:40You know what I'm saying?
- 6:42But you know what?
- 6:43This is one thing because I've I've tried to take a little social media break.
- 6:50How did we find out when things were happening?
- 6:53We didn't.
- 6:54We found out a week later or whatever, whenever we found out, because nothing was that pressing.
- 7:01But no, we used to go places and do like live music and things like that.
- 7:08Like I don't know, like how am I off social media going to stay up to what's happening?
- 7:14See, I grew up when you contacted people at home, like after six and before that they
- 7:25were not available.
- 7:27Period.
- 7:28All day.
- 7:29You're not getting you're not getting in touch with.
- 7:31Yeah.
- 7:32And so this world will go absolute bonkers if we can't contact each other immediately.
- 7:39Immediately.
- 7:40Yeah.
- 7:41You know what?
- 7:42I remember one day I don't even know when I forgot my phone.
- 7:48That's a time back around.
- 7:51You know what?
- 7:52And I realized I forgot my phone when I was driving.
- 7:54Why?
- 7:55Because my music didn't connect.
- 7:56But I said, you know what?
- 7:59I am not turning back around.
- 8:01So I'm going to be without my phone like all day.
- 8:06So I was without my phone.
- 8:09I got so much more accomplished, but then I said, what if I have a medical emergency
- 8:15in the car?
- 8:16What's going to happen?
- 8:17Who can I call?
- 8:18Can't call nobody.
- 8:19That's a hypochondriac.
- 8:20Yeah, that's what that is.
- 8:21All right.
- 8:22Enough of that.
- 8:23It's time for a Coffie Break.
- 8:30Okay.
- 8:33So for today's Coffie Break, I want to say, better to admit you walk through the wrong
- 8:43door than to spend your life in the wrong room.
- 8:46What you got to say about that?
- 8:48That's powerful because, you know, we make dumb decisions as we're younger.
- 8:56Yeah.
- 8:57And older.
- 8:58But you should be making more advanced decisions as you're older because you've been through
- 9:04some things.
- 9:05You've learned some things.
- 9:06But when you walk through that door and you decide, I don't care if I'm in the wrong
- 9:11room.
- 9:12I'm staying here.
- 9:13That's crazy.
- 9:14That's stunning your growth.
- 9:16That's stunning your purpose in life.
- 9:19You know what I'm saying?
- 9:20Yeah.
- 9:21Yeah.
- 9:22You may have walked into a railroad station and became a real, but what if you're meant
- 9:27to be president?
- 9:28You know what I'm saying?
- 9:29Get out of the room.
- 9:32And don't let the room confine you.
- 9:33Yeah.
- 9:34Yeah.
- 9:35You know what?
- 9:36I've done that at conferences.
- 9:37I went to the wrong room.
- 9:39Oh, talk about it.
- 9:40And it's like, oh, do I continue to sit here and pretend if I know what's going on and
- 9:48I'm supposed to be here?
- 9:50Or do I get up and feel like-
- 9:54Everyone's looking at me.
- 9:55Everyone's looking at me, go out the room, but I would rather get up and go out because
- 10:00the information that I'm trying to absorb wasn't the information that I was supposed
- 10:04to have anyway.
- 10:05And it's wasting your time.
- 10:07Yeah.
- 10:08That's the whole point.
- 10:09Going into the wrong room and not admitting it, it's wasting your time.
- 10:14Right.
- 10:15But you know what?
- 10:16You always have the ability to get up and go where you're supposed to go.
- 10:20That's right.
- 10:21And that happens with life too.
- 10:23We all make-
- 10:24Yeah.
- 10:25We all make wrong turns, wrong decisions, but we have the opportunity to-
- 10:29Just don't stay there.
- 10:30That part.
- 10:31Don't stay there.
- 10:32Yeah.
- 10:33I think that's good.
- 10:34That's a good one.
- 10:35Okay.
- 10:36What is going on today?
- 10:38What are we talking about?
- 10:39Today, I forgot to wear my red and you did too.
- 10:42Yeah.
- 10:43However, we have Ms. Rose Hampton with us who is our nurse practitioner.
- 10:49You know what?
- 10:50We have her on the show, have heard so much about our nurse practitioner and now we have
- 10:54her on the show.
- 10:55Now we have her on the show.
- 10:56Yes.
- 10:57And we will be talking about Heart Health Month.
- 11:00Welcome, Rose.
- 11:01You know, February is Heart Health Month.
- 11:03Welcome.
- 11:04Glad to be here.
- 11:05Thanks for having me.
- 11:06Yeah.
- 11:07Very good.
- 11:08Very good.
- 11:09So we want to get a little into your background.
- 11:15You know, I want the viewers because literally I feel like every, almost every other show
- 11:20we mentioned, we have a nurse practitioner.
- 11:23So we're always talking about you, Rose.
- 11:26So give the viewers a little bit about your background.
- 11:31Yeah.
- 11:33Just tell us a little bit about yourself.
- 11:35Well, I currently live in London, Kentucky.
- 11:39I have two sons.
- 11:42And I've been in the nursing, I've been a nurse for over 22 years.
- 11:47My last five years, I've been a nurse practitioner and I've worked with all ages, geriatrics,
- 11:57pediatrics, and I love what I do.
- 12:02Yay.
- 12:03So how did you go from, I guess you were a registered nurse before.
- 12:09What made you go to wanting to be a nurse practitioner?
- 12:13I wanted to do more.
- 12:14I felt like I was capable of doing more and I wanted more.
- 12:18Yeah.
- 12:19So can you tell the viewers, like what is the difference between a registered nurse
- 12:24and a nurse practitioner?
- 12:26The difference there is the school.
- 12:30You're more educated and you can diagnose and treat patients.
- 12:34As a registered nurse, you cannot do that.
- 12:37You just take care of patients.
- 12:38So you're able to write prescriptions and things like that?
- 12:42Yes.
- 12:43Okay.
- 12:44I'll probably need a...
- 12:45Yeah, that's good.
- 12:46I didn't know that.
- 12:47No.
- 12:48So we want to talk about Heart Health Month.
- 12:54If you could, let's talk about the heart.
- 12:59What are some of...
- 13:02Let's talk about a heart attack because whenever we hear about Heart Health Month, we think
- 13:06of heart attacks.
- 13:07What are some important things we need to know about heart attacks?
- 13:13So first of all, what is a heart attack?
- 13:15Right?
- 13:16So a heart attack, why does it happen?
- 13:18It happens because blood flow to your heart is either reduced or blocked.
- 13:23And that's usually from fat, cholesterol buildup in your arteries, coronary arteries specifically.
- 13:31So artery disease is the main cause of that.
- 13:35And a lot of times we can do things to prevent that from happening.
- 13:42Like one would be what we eat.
- 13:45Yes, absolutely.
- 13:47So eating healthy, eating a healthy diet, physical activity, staying physically active.
- 13:53I suggest you have at least 150 hours a week to be physical.
- 14:00And then we can also, no smoking, stress.
- 14:06Oh, talk about that.
- 14:09How you get rid of that?
- 14:11Sign me up for getting rid of stress.
- 14:14But you know what, that's interesting because a lot of people think it's all about what
- 14:21I eat and me not being active.
- 14:23No, stress.
- 14:24Stress can play a major role in your overall health.
- 14:28So you want to be as less stressed as possible and do things to help you decrease stress.
- 14:34And we all know how to do that.
- 14:36Exercise is a big thing.
- 14:37Doing things that make you happy, doing hobbies that make you happy, spending time with your
- 14:42family, all those things that make you happy.
- 14:46It's a big one.
- 14:48Sounds good.
- 14:49So, you know, my first, I guess, experience with heart attack or heart disease or whatever.
- 15:01So when I was about 11, my mom's mom, my mom and mom, she had a heart attack.
- 15:07She was very petite, very small.
- 15:09I don't even know if she was over 100 pounds and she she ended up dying.
- 15:14And I automatically thought like, oh, this would happen to someone who is unhealthy,
- 15:22someone who is bigger.
- 15:24But that wasn't the case.
- 15:25And then that's how I ended up getting into nutrition, because I wanted to learn like,
- 15:32what is this disease?
- 15:34What?
- 15:35And knowing that like food can help us was like, you know, important to me for me to
- 15:42learn.
- 15:43What can you do to prevent it?
- 15:44Absolutely.
- 15:45What's my risk factor?
- 15:47What can I do to stay heart healthy?
- 15:51What's some things you would think of?
- 15:52Yeah, yeah.
- 15:53I think coming back from the break, if we could talk about what are risk factors and
- 15:59what are some signs of a heart attack?
- 16:03You are listening to Look Who's Talking.
- 16:06We'll be right back.
- 16:16This past year has highlighted the strength of Community Action Council.
- 16:19Every day our staff works together to help families recover from this crisis.

- 17:08application today by calling 859-233-4600 or go online at commaction.org.
- 17:17That's commaction.org.
- 17:41You are listening to Look Who's Talking.
- 17:44We are here with Ms. Rose Hampton, who is our nurse practitioner.
- 17:49So before the break, we were talking about, you know, heart attacks and things like that.
- 17:54So I want to get into what are some risk factors that folks can look out for?
- 18:00So the things that you can do to help prevent and help with your overall heart health is
- 18:07not smoke, physical activity every day.
- 18:12What's what you eat?
- 18:13Eat as healthy as you can.
- 18:16Exercise.
- 18:17Sorry, I lost my train of thought.
- 18:21So how important is genetics?
- 18:23Like if someone in your family had either a heart attack or heart disease, how what's
- 18:31the probability of, you know, other family members going through that?
- 18:35You want to make sure that you are monitoring your blood pressure and that you're keeping
- 18:40note of that regular normal blood pressure 120 over 80.
- 18:43So any abnormalities outside of that, you want to make sure you notify your provider.
- 18:48Keep good check on that.
- 18:49Keep good check on your cholesterol, triglycerides, of course age plays a factor in your overall
- 18:55health as well.
- 18:57So if you were having a heart attack, is it different signs for different people?
- 19:03Of course, I'm sure, you know, different people respond different ways.
- 19:06But what are some signs of a heart attack that we could look out for?
- 19:10We all kind of know what chest pain, discomfort in the chest, pain in your upper back, pain
- 19:16in one or both arms, your jaw.
- 19:20Dizziness could be also an aspect of that nausea, vomiting, weakness.
- 19:25Now why would pain in your back?
- 19:28Women more so with that.
- 19:30Women have more subtle signs than men as far as a heart attack.
- 19:33They have a lot more nausea, vomiting, more discomfort in the chest and upper back.
- 19:42And a lot of times they have a lot of weakness as well.
- 19:45You just feel overall just really weak.
- 19:47Wow, those are some.
- 19:48Kind of you know something's wrong, but you don't know what it is.
- 19:51Right.
- 19:52Yeah, one of the shows we were talking about, you know, you know your body better than anybody.
- 19:56You know when something's not right.
- 19:59Absolutely.
- 20:00And I've seen in and seen a medical professional to, you know, let them know, hey, I know I
- 20:08look great.
- 20:09I know, you know, everything looks right.
- 20:11But I just don't feel right.
- 20:13And if some of the signs of a heart attack are weakness, vomiting, and nausea, then I
- 20:20mean we really need to be taking.
- 20:22You know, sometimes people don't have any signs or symptoms.
- 20:26So that's all also something that can happen.
- 20:31And people don't realize that there's a lot of people that don't have any signs or symptoms
- 20:35of a heart attack until they have a heart attack.
- 20:39So when you're having a heart attack, what should you do?
- 20:46Call 911.
- 20:47Obviously, you think you or anyone around you is having a heart attack, you want to
- 20:51call 911 and get emergency help as soon as you can.
- 20:54So this is not something like, oh, just have a seat, turn the fan on.
- 20:58We'll see how things turn out because time matters, doesn't it?
- 21:04Time matters.
- 21:05And if a heart attack can lead to cardiac arrest and cardiac arrest is when the heart
- 21:10completely stops beating.
- 21:14So that's very important.
- 21:16If you feel like you're having some of these symptoms, you know, the minutes matter.
- 21:22So let's try to mitigate that as soon as possible.
- 21:26Yeah.
- 21:27So can we get into do children have heart problems and what are some of the things?
- 21:34How does this Heart Health Month or Healthy Heart relate to children?
- 21:40We want to make sure everybody is heart healthy, right?
- 21:43Even as a child.
- 21:44So you want to make sure they're physically active and that they're eating well, getting
- 21:49fruits and vegetables, proteins, all the good things, right?
- 21:53And decrease the added sugars in the diet and things that are unnecessary processed
- 21:59foods.
- 22:00It's not good for us to ingest, right?
- 22:03You know that from your background.
- 22:05Right.
- 22:06Yes.
- 22:07Yes.
- 22:08So is there a...
- 22:10I want to say when it comes to like clogged arteries, how long does that process take?
- 22:18Is it something that can happen quickly or?
- 22:22When something happens, it happens, you know, throughout.
- 22:26Gradually, yeah.
- 22:27Yeah.
- 22:28And the longer you go without treatment is the worst that it becomes.
- 22:34So the longer that you go without treatment or monitoring by provider, the greater risk
- 22:40that your heart attack will turn into a cardiac arrest, obviously.
- 22:45Got you.
- 22:46So we talked about some of the things that we can do on our own.
- 22:51What are some things that we can do that are outside of us?
- 22:53And I'm thinking maybe a primary physician will be able to monitor...
- 22:57Make sure you get your lab work, monitoring your cholesterol levels, your triglycerides.
- 23:03Make sure you're talking about am I at risk for diabetes?
- 23:07Diabetes is a big thing with heart disease.
- 23:09So you want to make sure you're not diabetic as well.
- 23:13And our primary physicians will, because triglycerides and all that, that's not in my daily conversation,
- 23:20but the primary physician can definitely keep up with that information.
- 23:25And like I mentioned before, you know, high blood pressure is a big factor.
- 23:28So you want to make sure that you're checking your blood pressure regular and that anything
- 23:32out of the norm that you let your provider know.
- 23:35And for our viewers, what is like a high number for high blood pressure?
- 23:42Well, a normal blood pressure is 120 over 80.
- 23:46So anything out of that range, you want to make sure you're writing it down, taking it
- 23:50to your provider's office.
- 23:53That goes along with age and aspects there.
- 23:57But 140 is a high number, obviously.
- 24:0197, just throwing something out there.
- 24:04But you just want to make sure that you monitor anything out of the norm that you let your
- 24:07provider know.
- 24:08So what if it's lower?
- 24:11What are we looking at there?
- 24:13A low blood pressure?
- 24:14Yes.
- 24:15I mean, there could be aspects there too, but it's not going to affect as far as a heart
- 24:19attack.
- 24:20You're not going to have a low blood pressure.
- 24:21It's not going to affect you in that aspect.
- 24:24Okay.
- 24:25Yeah.
- 24:26Yeah.
- 24:27Those numbers, you know, the only time those numbers mean anything to me is when I'm sitting
- 24:29in the ER and that machine is going and I'm looking at those numbers, although I don't
- 24:34know what I'm looking for.
- 24:35You know, they give me my blood pressure every time it goes to the side and I'd be like,
- 24:39mm hmm, I don't know.
- 24:40Is that good or bad?
- 24:41You don't want a low, low blood pressure because that doesn't mean good things, right?
- 24:47Are you alive?
- 24:48That is what I think.
- 24:49Are you alive?
- 24:50We want to be living.
- 24:51Right.
- 24:52Right.
- 24:53Right.
- 24:54So yeah.
- 24:55Yeah.
- 24:56Those in the top number and the bottom number, I don't know if we want to go that deep because
- 25:02I will forget the moment you tell me.
- 25:04So yeah, it's just 120 over 80.
- 25:06Over 80 normal and write it down.
- 25:08Take it with you to your doctor's office for your annual or if you have anything outside
- 25:15of the norm, if you're having headaches, you're not feeling well.
- 25:18It's a good idea to make an appointment with your provider, obviously.
- 25:24That's awesome.
- 25:25That's awesome.
- 25:26So what?
- 25:27And okay, let's talk about you now.
- 25:29What do you do here at the council?
- 25:31How are you showing, you know, and okay, selfishly for me.
- 25:38What brought you to the council?
- 25:39You know, you you've been a medical profession for how long?
- 25:43I've been a nurse in over 22 years.
- 25:46I've been a nurse practitioner for five years.
- 25:49So this has got to be a little different.
- 25:50So what brought you here?
- 25:52I love kids.
- 25:53Oh, I love pediatrics.
- 25:55Oh, great people here.
- 25:58It's a great job.
- 25:59I'm very blessed.
- 26:00I'm very thankful to be here.
- 26:03Good, good, good.
- 26:05That's awesome.
- 26:06What do what do you do for our kiddos?
- 26:09I do well, child exams and I do lead testing, hemoglobin testing.
- 26:17I just make sure they're overall they're healthy.
- 26:20And that's our goal here is to make sure they're healthy, they're well taken care of.
- 26:25And when you observe something, what what is your protocol?
- 26:30What's what happens?
- 26:31So that our parents know or potential clients know that when you bring your child to us,
- 26:39there is some some firewalls that are set up to help protect your children.
- 26:43If I find any abnormalities, I'm going to speak with the parents first always and then
- 26:49go from there as far as their provider, who I need to speak to, depending on the situation.
- 26:55And one more thing.
- 26:57These things are really brought out and through well, I'm assuming so I'm going to let you
- 27:01answer.
- 27:02How are these things brought to your attention?
- 27:05Are there some assessments that we do or what we'll do in their well child exam, I examine
- 27:11and things that I find out of the norm.
- 27:13I'll let the parents know.
- 27:15Sometimes the staff will let me know and then we'll evaluate and go from there.
- 27:20That's great.
- 27:21That's great.
- 27:22Well, we really appreciate you being on the show.
- 27:24It has been very informative.
- 27:28And I know that our parents rest easy knowing that we've got somebody who's looking out
- 27:33for them and their children.
- 27:37It's heart month, right?
- 27:39Yeah.
- 27:40So that's a right.
- 27:42Yeah.
- 27:43Yeah.
- 27:44Heart awareness.
- 27:45Let's know about it.
- 27:46Let's do something about it.
- 27:47Let's stay healthy.
- 27:48Thank you again for being on the show.
- 27:51You have been listening to Look Who's Talking.
