Latest / 360 with Katie Woolf / Karama resident Kylie says she’s too scared to go to her local shops even in the day time due to crime and anti-social behaviour in the area
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We have certainly had concerns raised with us about issues
- 0:03Speaker 1: of crime and anti social behavior in Karama, and well,
- 0:08Speaker 1: having lived in the area for just eighteen months. Local
- 0:11Speaker 1: resident Kylie, who is in a wheelchair after a spinal injury.
- 0:15Speaker 1: She's pretty worried about leaving her home to go to
- 0:18Speaker 1: nearby shops and she joins me on the show right now,
- 0:21Speaker 1: Good morning to you, Kylie.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Good morning Katie. How are you doing?
- 0:25Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 0:25Speaker 3: Really good? Thank you so much for your time, Kylie.
- 0:28Speaker 2: What's been what's them?
- 0:30Speaker 4: I'm not currently in a wheelchair. I use that at times,
- 0:32Speaker 4: but I'm on a four wheel walker.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Good on you.
- 0:35Speaker 1: I know you're a bloody legend and I know it
- 0:37Speaker 1: would still be difficult though, and make it tough. I'm
- 0:41Speaker 1: assuming when you think about some of what's going on
- 0:44Speaker 1: in Karama and when.
- 0:45Speaker 3: You leave your house.
- 0:47Speaker 4: Absolutely it's a tough one because it's other local residents
- 0:55Speaker 4: and myself, I live directly opposite the shops too scared
- 0:59Speaker 4: to go over there even in daylight.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Now, goodness, may can you tell me what has been
- 1:05Speaker 1: happening out there?
- 1:07Speaker 2: Okay, So.
- 1:09Speaker 4: In the last six months, there's been a lot of
- 1:11Speaker 4: gang related stuff, mainly the Karama Boys, but fighting amongst
- 1:16Speaker 4: each other. But a couple of weeks ago, the Jovie
- 1:19Speaker 4: Boys came up and the Parmo Boys and there were
- 1:23Speaker 4: one hundred kids in the car park just fighting. On
- 1:27Speaker 4: my god, when was this about two weeks ago?
- 1:32Speaker 3: Yeah, that must have been pretty frightening stuff.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Absolutely, absolutely.
- 1:38Speaker 4: And the complex I live in is directly opposite the
- 1:41Speaker 4: shopping center and there's quite a lot of elderly here,
- 1:45Speaker 4: a lot of people in wheelchairs, a lot of people
- 1:47Speaker 4: the same as me. I try and walk as much
- 1:49Speaker 4: as I possibly can due to my spinal injury. Sometimes
- 1:53Speaker 4: I can, sometimes I can't. But yeah, it's quite frightening
- 1:59Speaker 4: even just to walk into the shops when you get
- 2:02Speaker 4: for money, you get for smokes to get you know,
- 2:06Speaker 4: and then I walk back from the shop because I
- 2:08Speaker 4: can only get a few bits and pieces at a
- 2:11Speaker 4: time because I get no support from the government and
- 2:15Speaker 4: I'm self funded. And yeah, it is quite frightening.
- 2:20Speaker 3: I can't imagine how scary that would be some days. Kylie.
- 2:23Speaker 1: If you you know you're you're doing amazingly the fact
- 2:28Speaker 1: that you are on that walker, in my humble opinion,
- 2:32Speaker 1: and that is a true feat in itself. But the
- 2:35Speaker 1: fact that then you're trying to get in and out
- 2:37Speaker 1: of the shops, carry your groceries, stay safe and not
- 2:41Speaker 1: being you know, and trying to keep yourself in a
- 2:44Speaker 1: situation where you've got your wits about you and are
- 2:47Speaker 1: as agile as possible as you possibly can be.
- 2:51Speaker 4: Oh yeah, that's right. I look behind myself all the time,
- 2:55Speaker 4: just to make sure I'm not being followed, because you know,
- 2:59Speaker 4: I'm I've been waiting to be rolled, to be honest,
- 3:03Speaker 4: I've been waiting for someone just to come and that
- 3:06Speaker 4: I hired as much as I can in my walking frame.
- 3:10Speaker 4: But one of the things I wanted to talk to you,
- 3:12Speaker 4: obviously about is there's a lot of theft yep, and
- 3:16Speaker 4: the security can do nothing about it, absolutely nothing about it.
- 3:21Speaker 1: So what do you mean people are people are going
- 3:24Speaker 1: in stealing stuff from the bottle.
- 3:26Speaker 4: Shop yep, yeah, the bottle shop or Woolworth, so just
- 3:29Speaker 4: walk in. I was paying at the checkout a couple
- 3:32Speaker 4: of weeks ago, and you know, I said to the
- 3:37Speaker 4: young fellow that was saving me, I said that lady
- 3:40Speaker 4: just walked out with a chick, and he goes, yeah,
- 3:42Speaker 4: I can't do anything about it.
- 3:44Speaker 1: We hear that so often, Kylie, Hey, like I hear
- 3:47Speaker 1: that so often. And the explanation that's very often given
- 3:52Speaker 1: to me as well is that the security say that
- 3:54Speaker 1: they can't do anything because they're actually worried that they're
- 3:57Speaker 1: going to get hirsh or injured trying to stop themsolutely.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 4:02Speaker 4: The other issue is, you know, around here a lot
- 4:05Speaker 4: of cars get stolen, windows get smashed, a lot of
- 4:08Speaker 4: graffiti on cars. My car's been broken into twice. My
- 4:11Speaker 4: car doesn't actually start, and I don't have a current
- 4:14Speaker 4: driver's license due to my medical condition. They won't let
- 4:17Speaker 4: me drive at the moment.
- 4:18Speaker 2: But I've still got the car.
- 4:20Speaker 4: But yeah, my neighbor informed me that my doors wrote
- 4:23Speaker 4: down my car. How they got into it, I've got
- 4:25Speaker 4: no idea, but they stole someone else's car from the complex,
- 4:29Speaker 4: one of the really nice ones, and then smashed all
- 4:33Speaker 4: these windows and graffiti bonnets and you know, and there's
- 4:37Speaker 4: graffiti inside and the outside of the complex like pole
- 4:41Speaker 4: suck zero eight one two, you know, Parma boys versus
- 4:46Speaker 4: Crume boys.
- 4:47Speaker 2: All that sort of stuff.
- 4:51Speaker 4: The shopkeepers I'm concerned about because it is a great complex.
- 4:56Speaker 4: It's got everything I need in it. The headdress of
- 4:59Speaker 4: the pharmacy or where everything I need. But the shopkeepers
- 5:03Speaker 4: are losing money because people don't want to go there,
- 5:06Speaker 4: and you.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Feel for them because you think to yourself, you know,
- 5:09Speaker 1: these are great people running local businesses. All they want
- 5:12Speaker 1: is to be able to run their businesses safely. As
- 5:15Speaker 1: you've touched on, you know, it's you live in a
- 5:17Speaker 1: complex where you've got people. Some of the people that
- 5:21Speaker 1: are there are seniors. It sounds like everything's so accessible
- 5:25Speaker 1: for you guys to be.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Able to get into the shops.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Really, but then when you're dealing with this kind of
- 5:31Speaker 1: garbage and you know, absolutely despicable behavior, you think, how
- 5:36Speaker 1: can you live your life?
- 5:38Speaker 4: Well, I've been in very close contact with brian O Gallagher.
- 5:42Speaker 4: He is our local counselor. He has been trying to
- 5:45Speaker 4: get police more police presence here last year or late
- 5:51Speaker 4: last year and early this year. He got over twelve
- 5:53Speaker 4: hundred signatures to get to the police presence even just
- 5:59Speaker 4: a caravan for a couple of months.
- 6:01Speaker 2: To deter this behavior.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Yep, because they put CCTV in.
- 6:06Speaker 2: They don't care.
- 6:08Speaker 4: They honestly do not care. They would just fight on
- 6:11Speaker 4: and bash on and whatever.
- 6:14Speaker 2: But you know they did have a caravan, you know, one.
- 6:17Speaker 4: Of those caravans that have the big signs of it.
- 6:19Speaker 4: They did have that here for a couple of weeks, yeah,
- 6:23Speaker 4: late last year. That deterred them for a little bit yep.
- 6:27Speaker 4: And then they moved that on to Palmerstan and it
- 6:29Speaker 4: just started up again.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, it sounds like it's it sounds like
- 6:34Speaker 1: it's really rough going for you guys. Can you tell
- 6:37Speaker 1: me how, you know, how are some of those more
- 6:40Speaker 1: senior people in the complex feeling.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Not good? Not good.
- 6:45Speaker 4: There's a lady that lives upstairs with me. She's also
- 6:47Speaker 4: on a walking frame. I hadn't seen her for a
- 6:49Speaker 4: couple of months, and I thought, oh my god, maybe
- 6:51Speaker 4: she's passed away, because most mornings I meet her down
- 6:55Speaker 4: in the car park yep, not by choice, but you know,
- 6:59Speaker 4: by accident. And she's on a frame as well. And
- 7:01Speaker 4: we walked across the road going to will Work to
- 7:03Speaker 4: do our shopping, and she actually ended up in hospital
- 7:08Speaker 4: because she broke a hip. And when I saw her
- 7:10Speaker 4: a couple of weeks ago, we walked across together and
- 7:13Speaker 4: she said, I don't want to come here anymore, but
- 7:17Speaker 4: I have to live here, and I said, well, so
- 7:18Speaker 4: do I. That is you know where I am right now.
- 7:22Speaker 4: It's not my choice, but this is what's happened. And look,
- 7:26Speaker 4: don't get me wrong.
- 7:28Speaker 2: The units that themselves are beautiful, They are really lovely.
- 7:34Speaker 4: The Body corporate does the best it can. However, the
- 7:38Speaker 4: gates like you need to use like a clique to
- 7:41Speaker 4: get in the gate and swipe to get into the lift,
- 7:46Speaker 4: they break them so they get full access and they
- 7:51Speaker 4: run around the path up and you know, steel cars
- 7:54Speaker 4: and before.
- 7:56Speaker 2: It's also the petrol station across the road.
- 8:00Speaker 4: A lady last week was filling up a car when
- 8:03Speaker 4: into pay came out to drive out. A group of
- 8:07Speaker 4: youths in father tried to stop her, so she stopped
- 8:11Speaker 4: and then locked the car and they tried to get
- 8:15Speaker 4: in car, so they smashed the side a side mirror.
- 8:21Speaker 3: You know, it's a bloody nightmare.
- 8:24Speaker 4: It's going to cost a lot of money even with insurance.
- 8:26Speaker 1: You know, yeah, Colie, this is its Honestly, you shouldn't
- 8:30Speaker 1: have to live like this.
- 8:31Speaker 3: We live in bloody Darwin, for God's.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Sake, you know, the greatest place on there.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Same here, And that is what is upsetting everybody so
- 8:41Speaker 1: much right now is that we all live here because
- 8:44Speaker 1: we want to live here.
- 8:46Speaker 3: We aren't here because we're forced to live here.
- 8:48Speaker 1: We love this place, we want to see succeed in
- 8:51Speaker 1: the way that we know it should be, and there
- 8:54Speaker 1: needs to be some serious work so that people like
- 8:57Speaker 1: you can feel safe in your own home.
- 9:01Speaker 4: I would just like, as Bruno Galladus has said, just
- 9:05Speaker 4: more police presence and even you know Lariche Nation, you
- 9:09Speaker 4: never see them out here, You never see them, yeah
- 9:13Speaker 4: once in a blue moon that they have amped.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Up the private security with dogs.
- 9:17Speaker 4: I have been escorted across the road with the private
- 9:20Speaker 4: security with dogs when the fights have been happening out
- 9:23Speaker 4: the front. I've been locked into Woolworth and had to
- 9:26Speaker 4: sit down on my Willie Walker. So they've locked everybody
- 9:30Speaker 4: in while they deal with what's going on outside.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Yeap, and yeah, that's basically what's going on.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Yeah, Kylie, I'm going to try and get Brian on
- 9:40Speaker 1: the show as well throughout this week. I know it's
- 9:43Speaker 1: something that we've spoken about before, and he'd come on
- 9:45Speaker 1: the show a while ago when he first well he
- 9:48Speaker 1: got those twelve hundred signatures. But it sounds to me
- 9:51Speaker 1: like it's something that we need to focus on again.
- 9:53Speaker 1: So I really appreciate you getting in contact with me
- 9:56Speaker 1: and making me aware of it.
- 9:59Speaker 4: Oh look, I just need to get it out there,
- 10:02Speaker 4: you know. I'd also like to say one of my
- 10:04Speaker 4: best mates that leaves two streets around the corner.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Beautiful, beautiful home.
- 10:08Speaker 4: Yep, he has electronic gates on his house and here
- 10:14Speaker 4: drove in his driveway a couple of weeks ago and
- 10:16Speaker 4: got followed in his two young kids in the backseat
- 10:19Speaker 4: of his car. So he locked the car in his
- 10:22Speaker 4: own driveway and then they started smashing his car.
- 10:26Speaker 3: Oh my god.
- 10:28Speaker 4: Yeah, and did it to one of his neighbors as well.
- 10:32Speaker 2: And these are kids with ankle bracelets on.
- 10:35Speaker 1: And you know, the thing is, Kylie, we don't even
- 10:38Speaker 1: hear about stuff like this so often because it's you know,
- 10:42Speaker 1: no longer considered something that's you know, that's unusual. It's
- 10:48Speaker 1: something that we're hearing and seeing happen more often, and
- 10:52Speaker 1: it's just not good enough. We you know, we cannot
- 10:55Speaker 1: continue to live like this.
- 10:57Speaker 2: No, we can't.
- 10:58Speaker 4: And he didn' choose to live in Korama. This is
- 11:02Speaker 4: not my chosen area to live in, but my circumstances
- 11:05Speaker 4: are that's where I need to live where I am
- 11:08Speaker 4: right now, yep, you know, but it is a nice place.
- 11:13Speaker 4: I've got a family friend that's lived here for forty
- 11:16Speaker 4: years down on Kln Mostripe where I live, and she
- 11:20Speaker 4: actually wants to move after forty years and she's seventy
- 11:23Speaker 4: five years old, and it's like that's the family home.
- 11:28Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's not acceptable.
- 11:30Speaker 1: And I'm like, I've got friends that live there too, Kylie,
- 11:33Speaker 1: and I just think it's no one should have to
- 11:35Speaker 1: live like that, and you should not have to move
- 11:38Speaker 1: houses or move states like we're seeing some people do
- 11:41Speaker 1: because of the garbage that's going on.
- 11:45Speaker 4: It makes me really really sad that people are leaving
- 11:48Speaker 4: on Math and going back down south because that's the
- 11:51Speaker 4: last place I want to go, because i never want
- 11:53Speaker 4: to be cold again. Because I'm originally from Adelaide. When
- 11:56Speaker 4: I grew up in Darwen, then went back to Adelaide's
- 11:59Speaker 4: thirty five years and now being back in Darwen to seven,
- 12:02Speaker 4: I have no intention of leaving Darwin. And this is
- 12:06Speaker 4: why I'm speaking out though, is because it's the crime
- 12:08Speaker 4: and the antisocial behavior that it's not just Karama.
- 12:13Speaker 2: It's everywhere, you know.
- 12:16Speaker 4: But where my focus on at the moment is it's
- 12:19Speaker 4: where I live and my safety, my neighbor's safety, and
- 12:25Speaker 4: you know.
- 12:27Speaker 3: It's yeah, you deserve to feel I.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Do need to say this.
- 12:33Speaker 4: The Antique government are doing absolutely nothing about crime. They
- 12:38Speaker 4: say they are and they're not. And I'm really really disappointed.
- 12:43Speaker 1: You're not the only one, Kylie, that is for sure.
- 12:46Speaker 1: I really appreciate you speaking to me this morning. Thanks
- 12:49Speaker 1: so much for getting in contact, and yeah, please keep
- 12:52Speaker 1: in contact. Let us know how things are going. We're
- 12:55Speaker 1: gonna try and get Brian on the show this week.
- 12:58Speaker 2: I got to be fantastic.
- 13:00Speaker 4: I'm sure when he's got time he will join you
- 13:02Speaker 4: because I'm telling you right now he's doing the best
- 13:05Speaker 4: for the community and the greatest bloke I've bet you know, good, Honie.
- 13:11Speaker 1: No, I appreciate you having a chat with us, Kylie.
- 13:14Speaker 1: I'm going to have to run off because we've got
- 13:15Speaker 1: to get to the national news. Thanks so much for
- 13:17Speaker 1: your time today. Look to yourself, you too. Thank you
