- 0:04Speaker 1: Here comes Tommy Canley joining us on FT Tommy, it's
- 0:06Speaker 1: good to see you, man.
- 0:07Speaker 2: How you been And.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Yeah, it has everything down there and four Myers right,
- 0:12Speaker 1: you're running four Myers for us for a little.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Bit, I guess. So I'm doing good. You know, it's
- 0:20Speaker 2: it's going well down here. It's obviously sunny out. You know,
- 0:23Speaker 2: it's actually been monsoon in the last three or four
- 0:26Speaker 2: days here, so it's been a little interesting, but that's obviously.
- 0:30Speaker 2: You know how Florida works. Late late afternoon showers is
- 0:34Speaker 2: usually how it works. So I get all the work
- 0:36Speaker 2: in before that and come back to this hotel and
- 0:39Speaker 2: do nothing all day. Love. Yeah, I do love this. Yeah,
- 0:45Speaker 2: you know, no kids right now, So I'm just kidding,
- 0:48Speaker 2: getting the hours in that I can.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Earth thumbs not yet.
- 0:54Speaker 2: No eyes aren't bleeding yet either, so that's that's a
- 0:56Speaker 2: good sign. Good good.
- 1:01Speaker 1: What's what's the word, dude? So like, what's the progression
- 1:04Speaker 1: for you right now? And when do you think that
- 1:05Speaker 1: you'll crack the bigs?
- 1:08Speaker 2: So today I actually threw last of my progression, So
- 1:13Speaker 2: it was I wanted to get a two out of
- 1:15Speaker 2: three before I high tailed it up north. So I
- 1:18Speaker 2: think their plan is to send me to Worcester, so
- 1:22Speaker 2: I'll be I'm pretty sure I'll be activated on Tuesday
- 1:25Speaker 2: for those games, and then I don't know, well, I
- 1:29Speaker 2: think they kind of just want to see me, you know,
- 1:32Speaker 2: see how I do against obviously triple A competition. Kind
- 1:35Speaker 2: of everything feels good right now. I mean today's Live
- 1:38Speaker 2: was the best definitely the best showing so far since
- 1:43Speaker 2: you know, I left the WBC. So I felt I
- 1:46Speaker 2: felt really good after today, and I feel like I'm
- 1:47Speaker 2: in a good spot and you know, hopefully they like
- 1:51Speaker 2: what they see and I can be up there soon.
- 1:54Speaker 4: Are there are there benchmarks they want you to hit
- 1:57Speaker 4: once you're in Worcester, where it's a sense of, you know,
- 2:01Speaker 4: you're a big league veteran. Sometimes big leaguers come to
- 2:04Speaker 4: the minor leagues and.
- 2:07Speaker 2: You give up.
- 2:07Speaker 4: You give up certain things, You give up certain hits,
- 2:10Speaker 4: runs and situations that ay that probably wouldn't happen in
- 2:13Speaker 4: the big leagues. Is there stuff that they said, Hey,
- 2:15Speaker 4: we want to make sure you're throwing strikes, this percentage
- 2:17Speaker 4: of strikes we don't. We want to make sure you
- 2:19Speaker 4: throw one hundred percent change ups stuff like that.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Yeah, to be honest, we didn't really put together like
- 2:26Speaker 2: kind of like benchmarks that I need to like hit
- 2:29Speaker 2: or things that I think they just want to see
- 2:31Speaker 2: that I look right. I know after the first outing
- 2:33Speaker 2: that I threw with with Boston, what was that probably
- 2:39Speaker 2: two weeks ago. I know, Core was really really pleased.
- 2:42Speaker 2: He gave me props, you know, that sat me down
- 2:46Speaker 2: that day. And then I saw him the next day.
- 2:48Speaker 2: He was very pleased. He seemed like he liked where
- 2:51Speaker 2: I was at, and he said, you know, they just
- 2:54Speaker 2: want me to build that workload and just be prepped
- 2:57Speaker 2: and ready for the big league. You know how things
- 3:01Speaker 2: go up there, It's just it's a grind. You're gonna
- 3:03Speaker 2: have to be the arms, gotta be ready to go
- 3:04Speaker 2: and be asked to take the ball every day. And
- 3:07Speaker 2: that's always been my that's my forte. So you call
- 3:10Speaker 2: down there, I'm gonna pick the ball up and go
- 3:12Speaker 2: whatever you need.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Tommy, when we were talking about benchmarks, does that mean
- 3:17Speaker 3: throwing a fastball? Do you have to be able to
- 3:19Speaker 3: throw a fastball in order to get called up or
- 3:22Speaker 3: do you just go down there and just throw change up,
- 3:24Speaker 3: change up, change up, strike out. These seventeen eighteen year
- 3:27Speaker 3: old kids, and you're like, I'm ready, guys, bring me up.
- 3:30Speaker 2: So it's funny you say that. Obviously that's that's not
- 3:33Speaker 2: everybody's mind. So these outings since I've been with Boston
- 3:37Speaker 2: have been for me. It's mental like like exhale essentially,
- 3:42Speaker 2: you know, I have the guys. I had Veritec come
- 3:44Speaker 2: up to me in the first couple of days and
- 3:45Speaker 2: kind of run through you know, where do I like,
- 3:48Speaker 2: you know, the catcher set up on certain pitches, when
- 3:50Speaker 2: do I like to throw them into acounts like slider,
- 3:53Speaker 2: change up, sinkers, everything and every outing I've had so far,
- 3:56Speaker 2: I've been using it all and I feel like I've
- 3:58Speaker 2: gotten better just by doing that instead of spamming change
- 4:01Speaker 2: ups you know eighty five percent of the time. So
- 4:05Speaker 2: the heater is good shape right now. You know, guys
- 4:07Speaker 2: are taking funny swings at it. So I think we're
- 4:09Speaker 2: in a good spot and I'm hoping that that'll translate
- 4:13Speaker 2: to the big league level this year. So hopefully we
- 4:15Speaker 2: can get some more fastballs, and that's for sure, some sliders.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Slider's been a lot better. I do. Yeah, that's the
- 4:22Speaker 2: funny thing.
- 4:22Speaker 3: Wait, hold on, since win, since like this week Kratz knows.
- 4:26Speaker 2: He just never called it.
- 4:29Speaker 4: That is not that is not true.
- 4:32Speaker 2: That is not true.
- 4:33Speaker 4: For the first like two or three times I caught
- 4:37Speaker 4: you in triple A, I thought your best pitch was
- 4:40Speaker 4: the slider, and then everyone was like, do you realize
- 4:43Speaker 4: where his change up profiles at? You have to you've
- 4:47Speaker 4: thrown your slider forever.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Yeah. Fine, I've been using a lot more in these games,
- 4:52Speaker 2: so it's been great. I'm u. I feel like it's
- 4:55Speaker 2: got good shape, you know, I've I mean today it
- 4:57Speaker 2: was through one bad one and it was a luckily
- 5:00Speaker 2: the wind was blown in so centerfield. But uh, I
- 5:05Speaker 2: just want to get used to throwing it, you know.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Repetition's huge, and the more I can throw it, the
- 5:09Speaker 2: better I'll feel out there command wise with it. And
- 5:12Speaker 2: I'm really looking to just use it early in the
- 5:14Speaker 2: count and steal strikes and just get hitters thinking even more.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Is there something to like?
- 5:20Speaker 4: Okay, you talked about the two and three days, making
- 5:23Speaker 4: sure you have back to backs, being able to be
- 5:26Speaker 4: ready once you're in the big leagues. It's still freaking
- 5:29Speaker 4: cold up there. It's gonna be cold in Worcester all
- 5:31Speaker 4: of April. It's gonna be cold to like Sinco de
- 5:34Speaker 4: Mayo in Boston. So does that kind of go into
- 5:39Speaker 4: it a little bit for you too, where you're like, Okay, yes,
- 5:42Speaker 4: I feel great at eighty degrees. Maybe I need a
- 5:46Speaker 4: day or two more to be able to then get
- 5:48Speaker 4: up to one hundred percent at forty five degrees in
- 5:52Speaker 4: a night game in Worcester.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it's so, you're not wrong. They did give me
- 5:57Speaker 2: an option. So they gave me the option. You know,
- 6:00Speaker 2: do I want to stay down here and keep going
- 6:01Speaker 2: or do I want to go up there with with
- 6:04Speaker 2: the team and continue building, you know, in more in
- 6:07Speaker 2: like a controlled setting, but in the cold. And it
- 6:10Speaker 2: seemed as if they were pushing more towards staying here,
- 6:13Speaker 2: just just getting staying healthy in the warmer weather and
- 6:16Speaker 2: then going up there and embracing the cold. But I
- 6:20Speaker 2: you know, man, I'm the Northeast guys. If it's thirty
- 6:24Speaker 2: or forty even better, I'm used to it being you know,
- 6:28Speaker 2: ten twenty degrees. It's great stuff.
- 6:31Speaker 4: Wait wait, wait, wait, I just read on your profile
- 6:36Speaker 4: that you were in Boca Raton, Florida when you went
- 6:39Speaker 4: to Lynn University, So that makes you a Florida guy.
- 6:41Speaker 4: Based on AJ's that that base. That's an AJ theory
- 6:46Speaker 4: that wherever. You know, he was born in the Hampton,
- 6:50Speaker 4: so he's front. He's a Long Island guy, played in Chicago,
- 6:53Speaker 4: so he's a Chicago guy. So so that's probably why
- 6:56Speaker 4: you're soft and you want to stay down in Florida
- 6:58Speaker 4: because you were at the school in Florida. But my
- 7:01Speaker 4: real question is not even a question. I actually know
- 7:04Speaker 4: what day you're gonna get called up.
- 7:07Speaker 2: What do you have for me?
- 7:09Speaker 4: April twentieth, Boston plays a day game and then you're
- 7:13Speaker 4: gonna get called up that night because they play the
- 7:17Speaker 4: Yankees the next day or the first series, and Eraldus
- 7:22Speaker 4: Chapman is over there going. Tom My Gailey, I know
- 7:27Speaker 4: him and I like I like him very much, so
- 7:29Speaker 4: he has to be up here because we are going
- 7:31Speaker 4: to beat the Yankees together. Is there any is there
- 7:35Speaker 4: anything to do with I see your smile? Is there
- 7:38Speaker 4: any extra little hype that like, I'm not saying the
- 7:41Speaker 4: Yankees did you wrong or anything like that. I'm saying
- 7:43Speaker 4: the extra hype to be part of that rivalry again
- 7:46Speaker 4: just on the other side.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Uh, there's definitely some extra juice. I mean, that's that's
- 7:53Speaker 2: a given. I mean, being on the other side of
- 7:54Speaker 2: this rivalry obviously, you know you you look forward to it,
- 7:58Speaker 2: He really did. I mean, I know, like there's been
- 8:01Speaker 2: a lot of like crazy talk over the last few years.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Guys were trying to say that this wasn't a rival anymore.
- 8:06Speaker 2: That's definitely false. So to be on the other side,
- 8:11Speaker 2: you know, I'll be a little amped up, that's uh.
- 8:13Speaker 2: I got to try to kind of control that though,
- 8:16Speaker 2: because I feel like that's usually where I get in trouble.
- 8:18Speaker 2: You know, you go against an old team and you
- 8:20Speaker 2: know everybody, you want to prove that you know, you're
- 8:22Speaker 2: still good, and so I got to try to maybe
- 8:25Speaker 2: calm the emotions if it does get you know, if
- 8:27Speaker 2: I get called up then but if not, then you know,
- 8:31Speaker 2: I see him the next time. I know that at
- 8:33Speaker 2: some point I'm gonna end up running into them. So
- 8:35Speaker 2: I'm looking forward to it and definitely, you know, keep
- 8:37Speaker 2: the ship talk going.
- 8:40Speaker 3: Tommy, were you nervous about not signing because you signed late?
- 8:43Speaker 3: So were you nervous about not signing this this this
- 8:47Speaker 3: off season, this winter, whatever, this spring training? Maybe I
- 8:49Speaker 3: should ask you since you I mean, it happened like
- 8:51Speaker 3: the last week of spring training? Were you worried that
- 8:53Speaker 3: you weren't going to get signed? Because I saw you
- 8:56Speaker 3: when you were a team Israel and you you big
- 8:57Speaker 3: league me. So I don't know if you were mad
- 8:59Speaker 3: at the world norvous making things up. No, I read
- 9:05Speaker 3: it to you.
- 9:06Speaker 2: I gave you a big hug. Did you know?
- 9:09Speaker 3: Did you?
- 9:09Speaker 2: I think so? Yeah, we came up a little bit.
- 9:14Speaker 2: I asked you if everybody was here? You just said
- 9:16Speaker 2: you and Mark Solo trained today.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Yeah, it's true. That is where's that Jupiter? Jupiter?
- 9:22Speaker 2: Right? Jupiter? Yeah, yeah, we're Jupiter. But uh, oh crap.
- 9:27Speaker 2: What was the question?
- 9:28Speaker 3: Were you nervous about not signing?
- 9:30Speaker 2: Were you getting anxious about not signing?
- 9:34Speaker 3: Now you're trying to prove that I'm not telling you the truth,
- 9:35Speaker 3: which is not true.
- 9:37Speaker 2: I uh, I wasn't nervous. No. So I had a
- 9:41Speaker 2: lot of the nri I offers early on. So we
- 9:44Speaker 2: were kind of just, you know, biding time. And I
- 9:48Speaker 2: think a big reason was if I ended up signing
- 9:52Speaker 2: with a team, I wasn't going to be able to
- 9:54Speaker 2: play in the WBC because of insurance things. They deemed me, uh,
- 9:58Speaker 2: chronically injured, so it would have been it would have
- 10:02Speaker 2: been a disaster to try. Yeah, I would I would
- 10:05Speaker 2: have not been able to play most likely. So I
- 10:08Speaker 2: wanted to play in that And then I told my
- 10:10Speaker 2: agent after that, let's try to you know, get if
- 10:13Speaker 2: there's no big league offers, then I'm definitely willing to
- 10:16Speaker 2: sign with. You know, a list of teams that I
- 10:19Speaker 2: uh picked out for NRIs.
- 10:23Speaker 4: Yeah, because you were over thirty five and all the
- 10:25Speaker 4: insurance guys now, I mean everybody, all these guys that
- 10:28Speaker 4: are over thirty five. So if you're a fan of
- 10:30Speaker 4: a player who's over thirty five, do not do not
- 10:34Speaker 4: expect him to play for your country in the WBC.
- 10:37Speaker 2: How was that experience you? I mean, it was awesome.
- 10:40Speaker 4: You held out to not sign with a big league team,
- 10:43Speaker 4: to be in big league camp to do it. Was
- 10:45Speaker 4: it all that you thought it was going to be.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Yeah, and more, it really was. I think that experience
- 10:52Speaker 2: was something that I don't think I'll be able to
- 10:54Speaker 2: experience again. I mean, I hope so, but I'm gonna
- 10:58Speaker 2: be pretty old by the next one, so we'll see
- 11:01Speaker 2: how it goes. But you know, that was I would
- 11:04Speaker 2: put that definitely a top experience of my life. For
- 11:08Speaker 2: top three by far. I mean those games against the
- 11:12Speaker 2: dr and Venezuela were something special. Even Nicaragua game was
- 11:17Speaker 2: there was that's the most fans obviously, I've ever seen
- 11:19Speaker 2: that stadium. You know, I played there plenty of times
- 11:21Speaker 2: and it is not like that, that's for sure. So
- 11:25Speaker 2: that was it was really cool. You know that watch
- 11:27Speaker 2: the games in Houston too. I was following all the
- 11:29Speaker 2: games as best as I could. It was it was
- 11:32Speaker 2: that experience is I really enjoyed it, and I think,
- 11:36Speaker 2: you know, in the future, I would hope more guys
- 11:38Speaker 2: would be willing to sign on and see if we
- 11:40Speaker 2: can get this insurance stuff figured out. But it was,
- 11:44Speaker 2: it was, it was truly special. I was truly honored
- 11:47Speaker 2: and I'm very grateful that I got to got to
- 11:50Speaker 2: experience that. Tommy.
- 11:53Speaker 3: I'm in Boca right now as we speak, since you
- 11:56Speaker 3: went to land which is in Boca.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Okay.
- 11:59Speaker 3: I got a parking ticket yesterday from the PoCA police
- 12:01Speaker 3: two days it was actually two days ago. Now do
- 12:03Speaker 3: you know anyone there that can get that clear because
- 12:05Speaker 3: apparently I typed in the wrong parking spot. I tried
- 12:08Speaker 3: to do the right thing, and it was like a
- 12:10Speaker 3: six digit parking thing, and I typed in like two
- 12:12Speaker 3: of the wrong numbers. So you know, anyone like the
- 12:15Speaker 3: chief of police that I can call to get me
- 12:16Speaker 3: out of this thirty five dollars ticket.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Oh you should be good. My wife did that. She
- 12:22Speaker 2: actually put the wrong number, and then I think she
- 12:24Speaker 2: like called the people. It was like and they like
- 12:27Speaker 2: took it away. I don't know. Something weird. It happened
- 12:29Speaker 2: to us too well. She had proof that we parked there.
- 12:32Speaker 2: It was just she put the wrong number, that's all.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, okay, So I should I think you.
- 12:38Speaker 2: I would try.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Okay, wow, and then thirty five dollars. That's forty three
- 12:43Speaker 3: dollars me, that's a.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Lot of money. Yeah, I'm not I'm not willing to
- 12:46Speaker 2: sacrifice that. I know my wife's definitely not willing to
- 12:48Speaker 2: sacrifice that. So exactly, Wow, this is a thing.
- 12:54Speaker 1: This is I mean, I was making fun of you
- 12:56Speaker 1: all week, but it is apparently a thing that they have.
- 12:59Speaker 3: Like five digits parking spot numbers you have to type
- 13:01Speaker 3: in and you can't just you have to walk back
- 13:03Speaker 3: and forth because you can't remember the numbers. So you're like, oh,
- 13:06Speaker 3: it's just Joe, and you're like it will expire in
- 13:10Speaker 3: ten seconds. You're like, oh, gets to zero?
- 13:15Speaker 2: No more. I wish we just had the old school.
- 13:17Speaker 2: You don't throw a quarter in the thing, But hey,
- 13:18Speaker 2: what are you gonna do?
- 13:19Speaker 3: Nobody has quarters anymore?
- 13:21Speaker 2: No those are God, where'd they all go? I don't know.
- 13:25Speaker 3: They're all in the in the fountain, the Trevy Fountain
- 13:28Speaker 3: in Rome. Tommy, Tommy, when you do get called up
- 13:33Speaker 3: to Boston, are you still gonna walk rock your Eagles
- 13:36Speaker 3: tired ass gear or your Notre Dame tired gear? Like
- 13:39Speaker 3: what are you still gonna after the years they had?
- 13:42Speaker 3: Are you still gonna wear that stuff?
- 13:44Speaker 2: Oh? Yeah, I think you're in for a big surprise
- 13:46Speaker 2: with Notre Dame this year. You guys like, yeah, Lou Holtz,
- 13:52Speaker 2: it's gonna be the they're gonna win the you know,
- 13:56Speaker 2: but the birds. Yeah, I'm gonna wear it on undred. Hey,
- 13:59Speaker 2: if I get chance to rock Nick Foles in Boston,
- 14:03Speaker 2: I get a lot of funny looks because I usually
- 14:04Speaker 2: bring it every time that we go to Boston. I
- 14:06Speaker 2: wear it around. They don't like it. That's good Philly, Philly.
- 14:13Speaker 2: They will embrace you.
- 14:15Speaker 4: The woostas the Woosta crazies in the mass holes, they
- 14:19Speaker 4: will embrace you. But my last question to you, we
- 14:23Speaker 4: started to show off with it. Carter Jensen slept in
- 14:26Speaker 4: got scratched from the lineup. I've seen you in the morning.
- 14:31Speaker 4: Have you ever slept through your alarm and thought you
- 14:34Speaker 4: were gonna be late for a game? Thou always? That's definitely.
- 14:41Speaker 2: I think the latest though that I got there one day.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Because I did that, it was probably like eleven to
- 14:46Speaker 2: eleven thirty that was panicked. That's a panic, especially as
- 14:51Speaker 2: the younger guy. Woof, you get ragged on. Definitely. I
- 15:00Speaker 2: don't know if anything too crazy happened, but yeah, I
- 15:02Speaker 2: kind of got looked that funny. I think I probably
- 15:03Speaker 2: didn't pitch well either makes sense they'll miss that alarm.
- 15:08Speaker 2: But it's always like, you know, you don't what your
- 15:10Speaker 2: relief pitcher though, you like, yeah, I know, but you're
- 15:14Speaker 2: not a position was there and it doesn't it doesn't
- 15:16Speaker 2: affect other players.
- 15:18Speaker 3: I was thinking about this one. It affected Salvey and
- 15:21Speaker 3: Salvey had to catch instead of d H and you
- 15:23Speaker 3: know the prep for a catcher that goes into it.
- 15:25Speaker 2: Right real quick.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Tommy, was that when you were with the Rockies?
- 15:28Speaker 2: Is that how far back no, I think I think
- 15:30Speaker 2: it was when I was with the White Sox. Okay,
- 15:33Speaker 2: so it was only like two three years in the league,
- 15:35Speaker 2: and I was panic. But luckily that bullpen they were
- 15:38Speaker 2: they were really nice to me. They liked me. That's
- 15:40Speaker 2: a good thing. But say I was like eight, if
- 15:45Speaker 2: I had about eight to nine, you know, ten years
- 15:47Speaker 2: of the league. You show up at eleven, it doesn't matter.
- 15:49Speaker 2: I mean at that age, not a good not a
- 15:52Speaker 2: good look, definitely not. That's what we saw that. Yeah,
- 15:57Speaker 2: it's a that's panic. We've all done it. You sleep
- 16:00Speaker 2: through the alarm, you get as soon as you wake up,
- 16:02Speaker 2: your eyes it's that like your heart drops. It's brutal.
- 16:09Speaker 2: And that's why Michael, that's why I said, like five alarms.
- 16:14Speaker 2: So see it's great.
- 16:15Speaker 3: Michael and her staff does that. He sets like twenty alarms.
- 16:18Speaker 2: I don't understand. My wife gets so mad at me.
- 16:20Speaker 2: So she when I'm home, I only have one because
- 16:22Speaker 2: I used to do that. I'd have like three or
- 16:24Speaker 2: four and it would keep going off. She's like, why
- 16:27Speaker 2: don't you just set it for later because I'm not
- 16:29Speaker 2: going to wake up. I need like four shots. Yeah, man, do.
- 16:39Speaker 3: You also sleep in your socks, Tommy, I just want
- 16:41Speaker 3: to know this is like a thing.
- 16:43Speaker 2: No, yes, and no, just I have no preference. There's
- 16:48Speaker 2: times where I sleep in pants, shorts, boxers, not the shirt.
- 16:52Speaker 3: No shirt, because I didn't know if the sleeping through
- 16:55Speaker 3: alarm thing came with sleeping with socks, because we have
- 16:58Speaker 3: a guy that works for us named Michael that does both.
- 17:00Speaker 3: So I didn't know if they come together, if they
- 17:02Speaker 3: were like a combo platter.
- 17:04Speaker 2: I don't think I don't think it is.
- 17:06Speaker 1: No, Tommy, seems more like a go with the wind
- 17:09Speaker 1: guy at night, right, like whatever, whatever is the flavor
- 17:12Speaker 1: of the night. All right, I like the shirt, I'll
- 17:14Speaker 1: sleep in it.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's all all right.
- 17:18Speaker 1: Well, now that we got all of the important business
- 17:20Speaker 1: out of the way, go do your thing. We're keeping track.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Hopefully we'll talk to you in a couple of weeks.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Will be up in the big leagues shutting down the Yanks.
- 17:27Speaker 2: All right, good talking to twenty. That's when you're getting
