- 0:02Speaker 1: So I've told you before.
- 0:04Speaker 2: We have Sandre and I have three kids, are all
- 0:06Speaker 2: in their twenties now, which is wonderful. So we parents
- 0:08Speaker 2: had babies and children and middle schoolers and high schoolers
- 0:11Speaker 2: and college students and first jobbers and boyfriends and girlfriends
- 0:15Speaker 2: and all the stuff. And when we first started, when
- 0:18Speaker 2: we first had Andrew, you know, you're you're you're nervous,
- 0:21Speaker 2: and you're trying to figure out what are we gonna do?
- 0:23Speaker 1: You know.
- 0:23Speaker 2: So I had worked with high school students for ten
- 0:25Speaker 2: to twelve years before I became a pastor, like a
- 0:28Speaker 2: real pastor, and so I saw all kinds of family
- 0:32Speaker 2: stuff and I decided, Okay, we're not gonna do it
- 0:33Speaker 2: that way. So when we had Andrew and our kids
- 0:37Speaker 2: were old enough to have rules, we decided. I decided,
- 0:40Speaker 2: I said, in our house, we're just gonna have two rules,
- 0:41Speaker 2: just two rules. Honor mom and tell the truth. Honor
- 0:45Speaker 2: mom and tell the truth. I'd tell my kids all
- 0:47Speaker 2: the time. The worst thing you can do is tell
- 0:48Speaker 2: a lie. The worst thing you can do is tell
- 0:49Speaker 2: a lie. The worst thing you can do is tell
- 0:51Speaker 2: a lie. When day I'm driving and Andrew's in the
- 0:53Speaker 2: back seat, and it's in the car seat and or
- 0:55Speaker 2: he his big boy buckled up seat and he said, Dad,
- 0:58Speaker 2: I think I know something worse than telling a lot
- 1:01Speaker 2: like what because in our house, the worst thing you
- 1:02Speaker 2: can do is tell a lie, because if you tell
- 1:04Speaker 2: a lie, it breaks the relationship. You know, all this
- 1:06Speaker 2: preacher stuff, you know, he's not I think on the worst
- 1:09Speaker 2: in telling Alia I said what he said, worshiping the devil.
- 1:15Speaker 1: So we added a.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Third rule, honor mom, don't tell you know, tell the truth,
- 1:21Speaker 2: and never worship anyway. So we just had these two
- 1:23Speaker 2: rules because here's what I knew that you know what,
- 1:27Speaker 2: if you if you cover the basic things, that pretty
- 1:30Speaker 2: much takes care of everything. And in family life, those
- 1:33Speaker 2: two basic things covered just about everything. Now today, in
- 1:39Speaker 2: our journey with Jesus, Jesus does something similar, but he
- 1:43Speaker 2: takes it even a step further.
- 1:46Speaker 1: If you haven't been with us, we're in.
- 1:48Speaker 2: A series where we are following Jesus from his introduction
- 1:51Speaker 2: to the world to the day that he became the savior.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Of the world.
- 1:55Speaker 2: And we said throughout this series that Jesus was not
- 1:57Speaker 2: an end. Jesus was an Instead of that he came
- 2:01Speaker 2: to this place to replace everything that was pretty much
- 2:05Speaker 2: in place. He came to introduce something extraordinarily, brand spanking new.
- 2:11Speaker 2: He came to introduce, as we talked about last time
- 2:13Speaker 2: we were together, a new covenant, a new kind of
- 2:16Speaker 2: relationship between God and mankind. He came to institute the
- 2:20Speaker 2: new command, basically the fine print of the new covenant
- 2:24Speaker 2: that will talk about in a few minutes. And then
- 2:25Speaker 2: he left his new movement us the church. And throughout
- 2:30Speaker 2: his time with his guys, and throughout his three year
- 2:34Speaker 2: journey in Galilee and in Judea and in that part
- 2:37Speaker 2: of the world, he would drop hints.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Throughout.
- 2:39Speaker 2: He would say things like this, you've heard it said,
- 2:41Speaker 2: But I say, you've heard it said, But I say,
- 2:43Speaker 2: And his audience would say, yeah, we've heard it said.
- 2:45Speaker 2: That's what our parents said, that's what their parents said,
- 2:48Speaker 2: that's what Moses said.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Who do you think you are?
- 2:51Speaker 2: And Jesus would smile and say, just keep paying attention.
- 2:54Speaker 2: He claimed to be greater than the temple. Well, if
- 2:57Speaker 2: you're greater than the temple, then we don't need the temple.
- 2:59Speaker 2: But if we're we're not going to have a temple,
- 3:01Speaker 2: what are we going to have? What are you talking
- 3:02Speaker 2: about he insisted that the great people go to the.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Back of the line.
- 3:07Speaker 2: And then in a religious system, in a religious system
- 3:11Speaker 2: that valued cleanliness physical cleanliness, Jesus insisted that the people
- 3:16Speaker 2: who had the holiest hearts oftentimes had the dirtiest hands.
- 3:21Speaker 1: And Jesus would touch unclean people and he made them well.
- 3:26Speaker 1: He made them.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Knew it was an indication that something new was on
- 3:30Speaker 2: the horizon. But of course his upside down value system,
- 3:33Speaker 2: his kingdom that was not of this world, would be
- 3:36Speaker 2: in conflict with the kingdoms of this world. Conflict was inevitable.
- 3:41Speaker 2: And that's where we left off last time, the last
- 3:44Speaker 2: couple of times we've been together in this journey. Jesus
- 3:47Speaker 2: is on his way to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover with
- 3:50Speaker 2: his guys, and when the religious leaders heard that Jesus
- 3:53Speaker 2: was on his way to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover, they
- 3:56Speaker 2: put spies out everywhere. The text says that the chief
- 3:58Speaker 2: priest and the Pharisees had given orders than anyone who
- 4:01Speaker 2: found out where Jesus was should report it so that
- 4:04Speaker 2: they might arrest him. And it turns out that Jesus
- 4:07Speaker 2: was easy to find, but he was not easy to
- 4:09Speaker 2: arrest because everywhere he went there was a crowd. In fact,
- 4:12Speaker 2: as he came to Jerusalem, people lined the streets outside
- 4:16Speaker 2: the city.
- 4:16Speaker 1: We know they lined the streets inside the city.
- 4:19Speaker 2: The text says that the great crowd that had come
- 4:21Speaker 2: for passoverheard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem,
- 4:25Speaker 2: and the intensity built and the excitement built, because they
- 4:28Speaker 2: assumed that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem to do something
- 4:32Speaker 2: for the nation, but in fact, Jesus was coming to
- 4:35Speaker 2: Jerusalem to do something for you and for the entire.
- 4:41Speaker 1: World.
- 4:42Speaker 2: And then something unusual happened. One of Jesus's closest followers
- 4:47Speaker 2: broke rank. Judas got tired of waiting. It dawned on
- 4:51Speaker 2: Judas as they made their way to Jerusalem, Wait a minute,
- 4:54Speaker 2: he's not going in there to become the Messiah. I
- 4:56Speaker 2: think he's going to go in there and surrender all
- 4:59Speaker 2: this talk of the first shall be last and last
- 5:01Speaker 2: shall be first. And it finally dawned on Judas, this
- 5:04Speaker 2: is not going the way he always thought it would
- 5:06Speaker 2: and assumed it would, And it was time for him
- 5:08Speaker 2: to get out. But he wanted to get out with
- 5:11Speaker 2: something to show, so he broke away from the group
- 5:14Speaker 2: to run an errand he went and found the chief priest.
- 5:16Speaker 1: And he went to the chief priest and said, you want.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Jesus, I can get you Jesus, and I can get
- 5:21Speaker 2: you Jesus when he's not surrounded by a crowd. They agreed,
- 5:26Speaker 2: and they paid him, and the text says that he
- 5:28Speaker 2: watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over when no
- 5:31Speaker 2: crowd was present. And in the end their plan would succeed,
- 5:36Speaker 2: but their objective would not be bat because unlike them,
- 5:40Speaker 2: and unlike me, and perhaps unlike you, Jesus did not
- 5:43Speaker 2: cling to his life all along.
- 5:46Speaker 1: He had come to give it away.
- 5:50Speaker 2: But before that moment, before he sacrificed himself for the world,
- 5:54Speaker 2: there were two loose ends that he needed to wrap up.
- 5:57Speaker 2: So first, as they gathered for Passover with the guys,
- 6:00Speaker 2: the first thing he did was declare that he was
- 6:02Speaker 2: establishing a new kind of relationship between God and all mankind,
- 6:06Speaker 2: between God and God's image bearing rebel race. And so
- 6:10Speaker 2: in the upper room, as they prepared and as they
- 6:12Speaker 2: celebrated passover, Jesus changed the tone and Jesus changed the
- 6:16Speaker 2: meaning of passover, and he said, okay, I know You've
- 6:18Speaker 2: been it this way since you were little boys.
- 6:20Speaker 1: But from now on, when.
- 6:21Speaker 2: You gather for Passover, you're not going to remember Egypt,
- 6:24Speaker 2: and you're not going to remember Moses.
- 6:26Speaker 1: You're going to remember me.
- 6:29Speaker 2: And this bread that always meant one thing, from now on,
- 6:31Speaker 2: it means it represents my body.
- 6:33Speaker 1: And this wine that represented.
- 6:34Speaker 2: The blood of the lamb that our you know, ancestors
- 6:37Speaker 2: put over the doorposts, from now on it is going
- 6:39Speaker 2: to represent my blood. And I'm establishing a new covenant
- 6:42Speaker 2: in my blood. And this signaled the end. And this
- 6:46Speaker 2: is such a big, big, big idea that we miss
- 6:49Speaker 2: so easily. This signaled the end of God's conditional covenant
- 6:54Speaker 2: with the nation of Israel, and it signaled the beginning
- 6:57Speaker 2: of a permanent, unilateral, unconditioned, unconditional covenant with all mankind,
- 7:05Speaker 2: a new relational arrangement. But just like contracts, modern contracts
- 7:11Speaker 2: come with fine print. Just like modern contracts come with
- 7:13Speaker 2: terms and conditions, so covenants, ancient covenants came with fine print.
- 7:18Speaker 1: They came with terms and conditions.
- 7:20Speaker 2: And this new arrangement between God and man would require
- 7:24Speaker 2: new terms and new conditions. These would replace the terms
- 7:30Speaker 2: and conditions of the old covenant. And the thing is,
- 7:33Speaker 2: jesus closest followers should have seen this coming, because all
- 7:36Speaker 2: along the way, all along the way, he hinted at
- 7:38Speaker 2: the fact that something new was coming, something big was coming,
- 7:41Speaker 2: and it wasn't going to be an end. It was
- 7:43Speaker 2: going to be an Instead of that, he had come
- 7:45Speaker 2: to replace again much of everything that was currently in place.
- 7:49Speaker 2: For example, months before his gathering for Passover in Jerusalem
- 7:54Speaker 2: with disciples, about ten or eleven months before that occasion,
- 7:58Speaker 2: Jesus was the move through villages and towns, teaching, and
- 8:02Speaker 2: they're again sort of dropping breadcrumbs all along the way,
- 8:05Speaker 2: pointing to what was coming, and the Pharisees and the
- 8:08Speaker 2: Sadducees and the teachers of the law were constantly following him.
- 8:10Speaker 2: They were constantly trying to trap him and constantly trying
- 8:13Speaker 2: to separate him from the crowd. So on one particular afternoon,
- 8:16Speaker 2: they joined forces and they drew straws to see who
- 8:19Speaker 2: would go first, because they wanted to trap Jesus with
- 8:21Speaker 2: his words in order to embarrass him in front of
- 8:23Speaker 2: the crowd, separate him from the crowd so that he
- 8:25Speaker 2: would lose the crowd, so that they could ultimately arrest
- 8:28Speaker 2: and get rid of Jesus.
- 8:30Speaker 1: So here's what happens.
- 8:31Speaker 2: This is, you know, months and months before the events
- 8:34Speaker 2: have passover. The text says that then the Pharisees went
- 8:37Speaker 2: out and laid plans to trap Jesus with his words.
- 8:40Speaker 2: But they didn't go themselves. They would be recognized. So
- 8:43Speaker 2: they sent their disciples, their underlings, and they gave them
- 8:46Speaker 2: a very very specific question. We want you to go
- 8:48Speaker 2: sit in the crowd, blend in with the crowd. When
- 8:51Speaker 2: Jesus gets to the Q and a part after his talk,
- 8:53Speaker 2: you raise your hand and we want you to ask
- 8:55Speaker 2: a specific question. And if you ask it correctly, you
- 8:59Speaker 2: might be the one that wraps and trips up the teacher,
- 9:02Speaker 2: the rabbi from Nazareth.
- 9:04Speaker 1: And so here's what they said. They said, teacher. First,
- 9:06Speaker 1: they buttered him up. Teacher. They said, we know that
- 9:09Speaker 1: you were a man of.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Integrity, that you are teaching the ways of God in
- 9:12Speaker 2: accordance with the truth. And Jesus, we know that you,
- 9:16Speaker 2: like most people, you are not swayed by others because
- 9:18Speaker 2: you pay no attention to who they are.
- 9:21Speaker 1: You know, and Jesus sees this coming.
- 9:23Speaker 2: And then once they get him, all buttered up, and
- 9:25Speaker 2: they think he's leaning in and they think he's vulnerable.
- 9:28Speaker 2: They ask him an irs question seriously. Jesus responds with
- 9:32Speaker 2: a coin trick, and he sends them scurrying back to
- 9:35Speaker 2: their handlers. So the Pharisees are sitting in the back
- 9:38Speaker 2: of the crowd. Their guys come back. They've embarrassed themselves,
- 9:40Speaker 2: as Sadducees say, we're up next, And so the Sadducees
- 9:44Speaker 2: approach Jesus, blend into the crowd, Q and a stand
- 9:47Speaker 2: up in. One of the sadducees asked this question, teacher,
- 9:50Speaker 2: they said, Moses told us because they're always trying to
- 9:53Speaker 2: divide the people around the idea that Jesus was against Moses,
- 9:56Speaker 2: and Jesus stood in contrast to Moses. So now Jesus,
- 10:00Speaker 2: Moses told us that if a man dies without having children,
- 10:03Speaker 2: to follow this, if a man dies without having children,
- 10:06Speaker 2: his brother must marry the widow his wife and raise
- 10:10Speaker 2: up offspring for him. Now, if you are ever tempted
- 10:13Speaker 2: to embrace the Old Testament and live by the Old Testament,
- 10:16Speaker 2: this law in and of itself is a reason not
- 10:18Speaker 2: to okay. When you think about the implications of this,
- 10:21Speaker 2: And by the way, the New Testament says, if you're
- 10:23Speaker 2: going to do any of the law, you got to
- 10:25Speaker 2: do the whole thing. And this is probably illegal, you know,
- 10:28Speaker 2: in some capacity, especially if you're already married. But the
- 10:31Speaker 2: idea this was a good law in ancient times because
- 10:34Speaker 2: women were so vulnerable. So if a woman's husband died
- 10:38Speaker 2: and she didn't have any children, her husband's name wouldn't
- 10:40Speaker 2: be carried on.
- 10:41Speaker 1: There would be no one to take care of her.
- 10:42Speaker 2: So this was a good law. So her husband's brother
- 10:45Speaker 2: would then have to marry her. He'd have multiple wives
- 10:48Speaker 2: and then produce children through her so that his brother's
- 10:51Speaker 2: name could be carried on. So wasn't a bad thing.
- 10:53Speaker 2: But this was a law. So they tell Jesus the law.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Jesus already knew all this, and then they turn it
- 10:59Speaker 2: into a of sorts. Now there were among us. There
- 11:04Speaker 2: were seven brothers among us. They're just making this up.
- 11:06Speaker 2: There were seven brothers among us. The first one married
- 11:08Speaker 2: and died, and since he had no children, he left
- 11:11Speaker 2: his wife to his brother.
- 11:13Speaker 1: So they get married.
- 11:14Speaker 2: The husband dies, the wife marries the brother, and then
- 11:16Speaker 2: they say, and then the second brother died and she
- 11:19Speaker 2: married the third brother, and then the third brother died,
- 11:21Speaker 2: and she married the fourth brother, and then the fourth
- 11:24Speaker 2: brother died, and she married the fifth brother. The fifth
- 11:26Speaker 2: brother died, she married the sixth brother. The sixth brother died,
- 11:29Speaker 2: and she married the seventh brother, and then the seventh
- 11:32Speaker 2: brother died, and then she died. Now, every riddle has
- 11:38Speaker 2: a question at the end, So here's the question. So
- 11:40Speaker 2: when she got to heaven, who is she married to?
- 11:44Speaker 2: And the crowd was like, wow, that's a good question.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Who would she be married to in heaven?
- 11:49Speaker 1: Wow?
- 11:50Speaker 2: Now, the point of their question was to show how
- 11:52Speaker 2: ridiculous it was to believe in an afterlife, because the
- 11:55Speaker 2: Sadducees did not believe in the afterlife. That's why they
- 11:58Speaker 2: were sad, you see, Yes, okay, So they believed that
- 12:04Speaker 2: we all aren't you glad you came to church today
- 12:06Speaker 2: and you're glad you're watching the things you learn? Yes,
- 12:08Speaker 2: So they believe that we lived for mankind womankind. We
- 12:12Speaker 2: live for the pleasure of God, and when our lives
- 12:14Speaker 2: are over there over and that's okay, because we live
- 12:15Speaker 2: for the pleasure of God, not for ourselves. So they
- 12:18Speaker 2: were just showing how ridiculous it was that there was
- 12:20Speaker 2: an afterlife, which offended the Pharisees and was contrary to
- 12:23Speaker 2: what Jesus taught. So they asked him this trick question
- 12:25Speaker 2: that Jesus smiles and he tells says to them the
- 12:27Speaker 2: thing they hated when he said, he said.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Have you not read the scriptures?
- 12:32Speaker 2: We other think that's pretty much all we do is
- 12:34Speaker 2: he said, if you not read the scriptures, then he
- 12:36Speaker 2: skips over Moses, goes to Abraham, makes an incredible point
- 12:39Speaker 2: based on the tents of a verb, and sends them
- 12:42Speaker 2: scurrying off to their handlers as well, and.
- 12:45Speaker 1: The crowd goes wild.
- 12:48Speaker 2: They love it when Jesus humiliates the hypocritic religious leaders
- 12:53Speaker 2: who were constantly putting a burden on them that they
- 12:55Speaker 2: weren't willing to carry themselves.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Here's what the text says.
- 12:58Speaker 2: When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his
- 13:01Speaker 2: teaching and hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the
- 13:06Speaker 2: Pharisees decide to reload, so they sent their guys in.
- 13:09Speaker 1: That didn't work.
- 13:10Speaker 2: The Sadducees went in. Now the Pharisees have reloaded. They've
- 13:12Speaker 2: got a really good question. They are sure, this is
- 13:14Speaker 2: the one that's going to trip him up. And they
- 13:16Speaker 2: choose one of their best guys, he's actually a lawyer,
- 13:19Speaker 2: to blend into the crowd, wait for Q and A,
- 13:22Speaker 2: raise his hand.
- 13:23Speaker 1: And ask his question.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Now, this question is a question you've probably heard before
- 13:27Speaker 2: if you were raised in church. But this is an
- 13:30Speaker 2: extraordinary moment in jesus teaching ministry, and he uses it
- 13:33Speaker 2: to point to what is about to come.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Here's what happened.
- 13:37Speaker 2: One of them, an expert in the law, tested him,
- 13:40Speaker 2: so he wasn't there sincerely was this was part of
- 13:42Speaker 2: a setup? Tested him with this question, teacher, which is
- 13:46Speaker 2: the greatest commandment in the whole law again, the law
- 13:49Speaker 2: of Moses, which is the greatest commandment, and all the
- 13:52Speaker 2: laws that Moses broke brought down from Mount Sinai, which
- 13:54Speaker 2: is the greatest commandment.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Now, everybody in Jesus'.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Audience pretty much knew the answer to this question, because
- 14:00Speaker 2: there was a standard Sunday school answer to this question.
- 14:03Speaker 2: But Jesus saw this as an opportunity to point the
- 14:06Speaker 2: way forward to where he was eventually taking all of
- 14:10Speaker 2: his followers. And Jesus replied, and everybody in Jesus audience,
- 14:14Speaker 2: for the most part, could have mouthed along with Jesus
- 14:16Speaker 2: the answer to this question because this was there was
- 14:18Speaker 2: a stock, standard theological answer to this question, because this
- 14:22Speaker 2: wasn't the this wasn't the lawyer's real question. He had
- 14:25Speaker 2: a question behind the question, and once he got Jesus
- 14:28Speaker 2: to commit himself to the standard answer, he had a
- 14:30Speaker 2: zinger that was going to you know, not Jesus back
- 14:33Speaker 2: on the ropes, or so he thought. Jesus replied, love
- 14:37Speaker 2: the Lord your God, with all your heart. Everybody's like, yeah,
- 14:39Speaker 2: we know this, and with all your soul and with
- 14:41Speaker 2: all your mind. This is the first and the greatest commandment.
- 14:44Speaker 2: And the lawyer is about to ask his second question,
- 14:47Speaker 2: and Jesus says, and the lawyer's like no, no, no, no, no,
- 14:51Speaker 2: no no. And if you ann that's gonna miss this
- 14:53Speaker 2: thing up. Because see that was the setup. Then I
- 14:55Speaker 2: got my question, and Jesus is.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Like and and the second is like it.
- 15:02Speaker 2: The second is like it, The second is equal to it.
- 15:06Speaker 1: This is important.
- 15:07Speaker 2: The second is second in sequence, it is not second
- 15:11Speaker 2: in greatness. The second law is just as great as
- 15:15Speaker 2: the first law. They go together, and the second is
- 15:19Speaker 2: like it. Love your neighbor as yourself. Now, this is
- 15:23Speaker 2: the first time in all of recorded history that anyone
- 15:26Speaker 2: that we know of took a verse from Deuteronomy and
- 15:29Speaker 2: this verse from Levitigus and put them together in this way.
- 15:32Speaker 1: The two greatest.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Commandments are love God with all your heart, soul, mind,
- 15:34Speaker 2: and strength, and your neighbor as your self. And this
- 15:38Speaker 2: signaled a very important shift, a shift that Jesus had
- 15:41Speaker 2: been signaling all along.
- 15:42Speaker 1: But this was a big clue.
- 15:44Speaker 2: This signaled a shift when it came to religion, that
- 15:47Speaker 2: things were shifting from a vertical orientation to a horizontal
- 15:53Speaker 2: orientation in the religious world in which Jesus lived, in
- 15:57Speaker 2: the religious world perhaps in which you were raised east,
- 16:01Speaker 2: a person could love God and treat people poorly. A
- 16:06Speaker 2: person could claim to be good with God and mistreat
- 16:10Speaker 2: other people. And when they were confronted, they say, oh, no,
- 16:13Speaker 2: God and I are good. I've confessed my sins. I
- 16:15Speaker 2: go to church, I'm in ministry, I serve Yet but
- 16:18Speaker 2: do you see how you're treating your wife. Look how
- 16:20Speaker 2: you listen to the way you talk to your son,
- 16:23Speaker 2: Listen to the way that you respond.
- 16:24Speaker 1: To people at work.
- 16:25Speaker 2: I know, but me and God are good. This was
- 16:27Speaker 2: the religion of the first century, my friends. This was
- 16:30Speaker 2: every religion of pretty much every century. And Jesus says,
- 16:34Speaker 2: something new is on the horizon that is about to
- 16:38Speaker 2: change with me. And then he says, this all the
- 16:43Speaker 2: law and the prophets, all the law and the prophets. Now,
- 16:47Speaker 2: law and the prophets. In the first century, that meant Bible.
- 16:49Speaker 2: That's their Old Testament scripture. They didn't have the Bible
- 16:52Speaker 2: that came later. But they would call their scripture. They
- 16:55Speaker 2: would call it the Law and the prophets. This was
- 16:57Speaker 2: Genesis all the way basically through Malachi. There was no
- 17:00Speaker 2: formal canon yet, but basically, these are all the sacred scriptures.
- 17:03Speaker 2: So Jesus says, your entire sacred body of literature, your
- 17:07Speaker 2: entire Bible.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Hangs on these two commands.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Now, if Jesus had had a screen at that point,
- 17:14Speaker 2: I think this is what he would have shown them.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Next.
- 17:16Speaker 2: It would look like this. He'd say, love God, love
- 17:19Speaker 2: your neighbor. All of your Old Testament prophets, and all
- 17:23Speaker 2: of your Old Testament law, and all of your Jewish
- 17:25Speaker 2: scripture hang on these two things. If you're reading along
- 17:29Speaker 2: in Isaiah and you get confused, Just go back to here.
- 17:32Speaker 2: If you're reading along in Daniel and you kind of
- 17:33Speaker 2: get confused, just just go back here.
- 17:35Speaker 1: This is the starting point.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Everything else is history, explanation and commentary. In other words,
- 17:43Speaker 2: love for God this is his point. Love for God
- 17:46Speaker 2: is best illustrated, demonstrated, and authenticated by love for others.
- 17:52Speaker 2: And in this moment, Jesus reduces all of the Jewish
- 17:55Speaker 2: commands to two big ideas that he says are equal
- 18:00Speaker 2: in value. But he wasn't through the problem at this
- 18:04Speaker 2: point is that for a first century Jewish person, a
- 18:07Speaker 2: neighbor had a definition, and a neighbor was another jew
- 18:10Speaker 2: In fact, Levitgus nineteen eighteen that says love your neighbor
- 18:12Speaker 2: is yourself. It actually in that passage defines what a
- 18:15Speaker 2: neighbor is, and a neighbor is another Jewish person.
- 18:18Speaker 1: So Jesus takes it a step further.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Many weeks later, he's in a similar situation and another
- 18:23Speaker 2: lawyer comes and asks him another trick question, and in
- 18:26Speaker 2: response to that question, Jesus changes the definition of neighbor
- 18:31Speaker 2: for every generation and in every nation, and he tells
- 18:36Speaker 2: the story the parable of the Good Samaritan, and at
- 18:39Speaker 2: the end of this parable. At the end of this parable,
- 18:42Speaker 2: he answers the question who is my neighbor? And he
- 18:45Speaker 2: changes the definition of neighbor. And from this point forward,
- 18:48Speaker 2: Jesus says, the new definition for neighbor is not simply
- 18:51Speaker 2: another Jew, not someone who's like you, and not someone
- 18:55Speaker 2: you like. From now on, a neighbor is anyone anywhere
- 18:58Speaker 2: with a need that you can meet. This was new, indeed,
- 19:06Speaker 2: that now love for God. Love for God is best illustrated, demonstrated,
- 19:11Speaker 2: and authenticated by love for those who are.
- 19:13Speaker 1: Nothing like you and may not even like you.
- 19:17Speaker 2: This was so new, But unbeknownst to his audience, these
- 19:21Speaker 2: are breadcrumbs. Unbeknownst to his audience, these are all signs
- 19:25Speaker 2: pointing in a specific direction, hinting at the new terms
- 19:30Speaker 2: and the new conditions for the new covenant. And then
- 19:37Speaker 2: he chose passover as the moment for the official reveal.
- 19:42Speaker 2: They just finished the meal we talked about that last
- 19:44Speaker 2: time we were together. They just finished the meal. Then
- 19:46Speaker 2: he humiliates them by washing their feet.
- 19:49Speaker 1: They are so off balanced.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Then suddenly Judas gets up and leaves with no explanation.
- 19:54Speaker 2: And then Jesus, having replaced Moses, as the covenant maker,
- 19:58Speaker 2: because Moses was the one that established the covenant between
- 20:01Speaker 2: God and the nation of Israel, and now Jesus has
- 20:03Speaker 2: just established a brand new covenant between God and all mankind,
- 20:07Speaker 2: even though they didn't understand it at the time. Now
- 20:09Speaker 2: Jesus not only takes on the role as covenant maker.
- 20:12Speaker 2: Now Jesus steps into the role as law giver and
- 20:17Speaker 2: the new covenant, the new covenant, like the one that
- 20:21Speaker 2: he just replaced, would have its own set.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Of thou shalts and thou shalt not, but not six
- 20:28Speaker 1: hundred and not even two.
- 20:33Speaker 2: This is one of the most important moments in the
- 20:37Speaker 2: life of Jesus, and it's heartbreaking to me that for
- 20:41Speaker 2: centuries and centuries and centuries it has been so underplayed,
- 20:44Speaker 2: if given such little emphasis. Because what happens next would
- 20:48Speaker 2: ultimately change the world. Jesus says to his GUIs again,
- 20:54Speaker 2: who had no idea the significance of these words. He says, gentlemen,
- 20:59Speaker 2: I now get you a new command. Now, if they'd
- 21:04Speaker 2: been thinking straight, they'd say, wait, wait, wait, wit Jesus, Jesus,
- 21:06Speaker 2: you can't give us any new commands. Okay, only God
- 21:10Speaker 2: gives commands, you know. The story Moses went up to
- 21:13Speaker 2: Mount Sinai, God gave Moses the law, Moses brought it
- 21:16Speaker 2: back down. So Moses delivered the law. But Moses didn't
- 21:20Speaker 2: originate the law. So Jesus, okay, if you're saying that
- 21:23Speaker 2: you're giving us a new command once again, and you
- 21:25Speaker 2: do this all the time, it says, if you're stepping
- 21:27Speaker 2: in between us and God, it's like you're playing the
- 21:30Speaker 2: role of God.
- 21:31Speaker 1: Who do you think you are?
- 21:33Speaker 2: I think we're sort of getting the idea of who
- 21:35Speaker 2: you think you are, and that's disturbing to us. Jesus,
- 21:39Speaker 2: I'm going to give you a new command, into which
- 21:40Speaker 2: they might have said, okay, but we don't need any
- 21:42Speaker 2: more commands.
- 21:43Speaker 1: We have enough.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Besides, okay, besides, you've already reduced six hundred.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Plus to two. So now there's like a third command.
- 21:49Speaker 2: There's like love the Lord your God with all your
- 21:51Speaker 2: heart and mind, soul and strength, and love your neighbor
- 21:53Speaker 2: as yourself. And if you can't be with the one
- 21:56Speaker 2: you love, love, that's probably not it. So what you know,
- 21:59Speaker 2: what is the third command?
- 22:01Speaker 1: Man? Maybe three is good.
- 22:02Speaker 2: I mean tens a lot, six hundreds a lot. And
- 22:04Speaker 2: you gave us two threes the perfect number. So you're
- 22:06Speaker 2: gonna give us like the third command to go with
- 22:09Speaker 2: the other two. Is that what we're doing? But Jesus
- 22:13Speaker 2: had not come to add to. Jesus had come to
- 22:17Speaker 2: take from. Jesus had come to reduce even two to one.
- 22:25Speaker 2: If the church gets this right, everything changes. A new command,
- 22:33Speaker 2: I give you love one another, to which they thought,
- 22:36Speaker 2: that's not new, to which Jesus would have said, I'm
- 22:39Speaker 2: not through. There's a stipulation, as I have loved you, oh,
- 22:49Speaker 2: so you must love one another. And in this moment,
- 22:54Speaker 2: he could have gone around the room from person to
- 22:56Speaker 2: person to person to person, and perhaps he did and
- 22:58Speaker 2: no one recorded it, because he could have paused at
- 23:02Speaker 2: this moment and says, as I've loved you, you must
- 23:04Speaker 2: love one another. Matthew, you remember when we met, Yes, sir,
- 23:08Speaker 2: you remember what you were doing? Yes, sir, say it
- 23:10Speaker 2: out loud. I was a tax farmer. I was a
- 23:13Speaker 2: tax collector. And do you remember when we met? Do
- 23:16Speaker 2: you remember what I said to you? Yes, sir, you
- 23:19Speaker 2: invited me to follow you. And Peter would have spoken
- 23:22Speaker 2: up and said, I remember.
- 23:23Speaker 1: I was not happy.
- 23:25Speaker 2: In fact, none of us were happy about Matthew following you,
- 23:27Speaker 2: because if Matthew follows you, he tails around with us
- 23:29Speaker 2: and it's embarrassing Jesus. Like, Matthew, remember where we went
- 23:35Speaker 2: after I asked you to follow me? Yes? Or we
- 23:36Speaker 2: went to my house Peter's like I remember that, Peter. Matthew,
- 23:44Speaker 2: for the rest of your life. The grace I extended
- 23:48Speaker 2: to you that day, I want you to extend that
- 23:51Speaker 2: to every single person you meet for the rest of
- 23:54Speaker 2: your life. Matthew, it's not the Golden rule. Were stepping
- 24:00Speaker 2: it up as I have loved you. That's how you
- 24:03Speaker 2: to love other people. Nathaniel, Yes, sir, you remember when
- 24:06Speaker 2: we met, Yes, sir? Remember what you said about my hometown,
- 24:09Speaker 2: my parents, my stickball team, all my friends, Nazareth, Nazareth,
- 24:13Speaker 2: what good thing could come from Nazareth?
- 24:15Speaker 1: Do you remember that, Nathaniel? Yes, sir? Do you remember
- 24:17Speaker 1: how I responded?
- 24:19Speaker 2: Yes, sir, you invited me to be one of your
- 24:22Speaker 2: closest followers.
- 24:23Speaker 1: That's right, Nathaniel.
- 24:25Speaker 2: I want you to extend that same kind of grace
- 24:27Speaker 2: and that same kind of acceptance to everyone you meet,
- 24:29Speaker 2: regardless how they treat you. Guys, you remember that afternoon
- 24:34Speaker 2: that I didn't have my best day, I will admit it.
- 24:37Speaker 2: When I preached that sermon about drinking my blood and
- 24:39Speaker 2: eating my flesh, and people got nervous because they couldn't
- 24:41Speaker 2: go with the illustration, and people started leaving. You remember
- 24:44Speaker 2: that afternoon. You guys were all sitting around looking at
- 24:46Speaker 2: me like you're paying attention, but I saw you glancing
- 24:48Speaker 2: off to the side.
- 24:49Speaker 1: We started losing the crowd that day. Do you remember that, guys? John?
- 24:52Speaker 2: You do?
- 24:53Speaker 1: You wrote it down right? We remember?
- 24:58Speaker 2: And do you remember how I responded when I busted you?
- 25:01Speaker 2: Do you remember, Peter? I looked at you guys and said,
- 25:03Speaker 2: you don't want to go too? Do you? And you
- 25:04Speaker 2: were smart enough ought to lie to me because by
- 25:07Speaker 2: that time you knew I would know you're lying.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Remember when I said, do you want to go too?
- 25:10Speaker 2: Because I knew every single one of you, every single
- 25:13Speaker 2: one of you, in spite of all I've done for you,
- 25:15Speaker 2: every single one of you, wanted to blend into the
- 25:17Speaker 2: crowd and disappear. Do you remember that day? Yes, sir,
- 25:22Speaker 2: Do you remember how I responded? You wanted to unfollow me,
- 25:26Speaker 2: But I never chose to unfollow you, and I never
- 25:29Speaker 2: brought it up That's how I want you to treat
- 25:32Speaker 2: each other and the people that you meet for the
- 25:35Speaker 2: rest of your life.
- 25:37Speaker 1: And this is just the passover meal. You know what
- 25:39Speaker 1: he could have said.
- 25:40Speaker 2: And guys, you think you've seen love, you ain't seen
- 25:44Speaker 2: nothing yet. Two days from now, three days from now,
- 25:50Speaker 2: four days from now, I'm gonna take this to a
- 25:53Speaker 2: whole other level. And I want you to remember this
- 25:55Speaker 2: night because your responsibility is to love other people the
- 25:59Speaker 2: way that I have loved and am about to love
- 26:04Speaker 2: you by this one thing, By this one thing, By
- 26:10Speaker 2: this one thing, everyone will know that you are my disciple.
- 26:15Speaker 2: If you love one another, not if you love me
- 26:19Speaker 2: because I'm leaving, not if.
- 26:21Speaker 1: You love God.
- 26:22Speaker 2: Nobody knows if you love one another. His point being
- 26:28Speaker 2: that your love for me and your love for your
- 26:30Speaker 2: heavenly Father will be demonstrated by how well you love
- 26:34Speaker 2: each other and how well you love the people that
- 26:36Speaker 2: are difficult to love.
- 26:40Speaker 1: And compared to.
- 26:42Speaker 2: The extraordinarily complicated system of laws that they had grown
- 26:46Speaker 2: up with.
- 26:47Speaker 1: This was far, far, far.
- 26:49Speaker 2: Less complicated, but it was far more demanding. Now let
- 26:55Speaker 2: me try to illustrate why, and I would rather just
- 26:57Speaker 2: not leave the room. Okay, So this is just between us.
- 27:01Speaker 2: If you give me a list of rules, I can
- 27:04Speaker 2: find a loophole. In fact, the more rules you give me,
- 27:08Speaker 2: the more space there is and the more potential for loopholes. Right,
- 27:11Speaker 2: And it's not just me. If I give you a
- 27:13Speaker 2: list of rules, you can find a loophole. If you're
- 27:15Speaker 2: a parent, and you have parented through the middle school years,
- 27:17Speaker 2: you get this. If you can remember middle school, you
- 27:20Speaker 2: get this. Well, Mom, you didn't say exactly. Well, Dad,
- 27:24Speaker 2: you said to be home, but you didn't say where
- 27:26Speaker 2: at home. Dad, you said I couldn't play, but you
- 27:28Speaker 2: didn't say.
- 27:29Speaker 1: You didn't say. In other words, you didn't give me
- 27:31Speaker 1: the Dad. You know you're gonna have to spell this out.
- 27:33Speaker 2: We're gonna have to have tiny print anytime you ever
- 27:35Speaker 2: say anything to me, Because Dad, I'm twelve years old,
- 27:37Speaker 2: I'm thirteen years old. I'm gonna find a loophole. Because
- 27:39Speaker 2: where there are rules plural, there is space, there are cracks.
- 27:45Speaker 2: In fact, it's worse than that. And this is the
- 27:46Speaker 2: part I really don't want you to tell anybody.
- 27:47Speaker 1: If you give me a.
- 27:48Speaker 2: Bible and I get to use the whole Bible, I
- 27:51Speaker 2: can find a loophole for just about anything you want
- 27:53Speaker 2: to do, especially if I get to use the first half,
- 27:58Speaker 2: because some of the people who wrote the songs we
- 28:00Speaker 2: sing on Sunday did some horrible things. One of them
- 28:04Speaker 2: was a man after God's own heart.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Well, there you go.
- 28:09Speaker 2: This is why you know people like me get questions
- 28:13Speaker 2: like this all the time. You've asked this question or
- 28:15Speaker 2: some question like it, Well, what does the Bible say
- 28:17Speaker 2: about because I want to do A? Does the Bible
- 28:19Speaker 2: say anything's wrong with A? Because I want to do A?
- 28:20Speaker 2: And if the Bible doesn't say A specifically, okay, that's
- 28:23Speaker 2: not exactly Okay, that's like B I'm asking about A.
- 28:26Speaker 1: So I'm good to go? Right?
- 28:28Speaker 2: Is there anything wrong with Does the Bible say there's
- 28:30Speaker 2: anything wrong with?
- 28:31Speaker 1: All those questions?
- 28:32Speaker 2: I mean, I understand what's behind the questions, but often
- 28:34Speaker 2: what's behind the question is, look, this is what I
- 28:36Speaker 2: want to do, and I don't want to do anything
- 28:38Speaker 2: that God's absolutely against. But if he doesn't spell it
- 28:40Speaker 2: out specifically.
- 28:41Speaker 1: Am I good to go?
- 28:44Speaker 2: And the answer is, give me a Bible, and I
- 28:46Speaker 2: can find you an opportunity to be good to go,
- 28:48Speaker 2: because give me a list of rules, give you a
- 28:49Speaker 2: list of rules, you'll find a loophole, you'll find some
- 28:53Speaker 2: wiggle room. Jesus walked into a religious environment where the
- 28:58Speaker 2: religious leaders were professional loophole creators, and the hypocrisy was overwhelming,
- 29:05Speaker 2: and it drove people away from the very God that
- 29:09Speaker 2: had created them to worship them. New Covenant love, New
- 29:18Speaker 2: Covenant love. The New Covenant command closes all the loopholes
- 29:22Speaker 2: because there's only one command. You can't slide in between them.
- 29:29Speaker 2: There's not an M, It's just one. This was the
- 29:34Speaker 2: brilliance of Jesus. Besides, after all, I'm not always sure
- 29:41Speaker 2: what to believe, I'm not always sure who to believe,
- 29:46Speaker 2: but I almost always know what love requires of me.
- 29:51Speaker 2: The old Covenant question was this question, what does the
- 29:53Speaker 2: law require? The modern version of the Old Covenant covenant
- 29:58Speaker 2: question is what does the bi require? The New Covenant question,
- 30:05Speaker 2: the Jesus question is what does love require of me?
- 30:12Speaker 2: And here's something our middle school students and our high
- 30:15Speaker 2: school students and our college students need to know. And
- 30:17Speaker 2: here's something we all need to know. But here's something
- 30:20Speaker 2: that has to become more foundational in.
- 30:22Speaker 1: The teaching of the church.
- 30:24Speaker 2: Is simply this that every New Testament imperative of an
- 30:28Speaker 2: imperative is like a command. Right, Every New Testament imperative,
- 30:32Speaker 2: every New Testament imperative, especially those that follow the resurrection,
- 30:36Speaker 2: Every New Testament parative is simple. Imperative is simply an
- 30:40Speaker 2: application of this new Covenant command. In other words, the
- 30:44Speaker 2: New Testament is not full of a bunch of rules.
- 30:47Speaker 2: The New Testament is full of one rule with hundreds
- 30:50Speaker 2: or dozens rather of applications.
- 30:52Speaker 1: In other words, if we had.
- 30:53Speaker 2: A new chart, it would look like this love just
- 30:56Speaker 2: as I've loved you, And everything else is explanation. Everything
- 30:59Speaker 2: else application, everything else's history, everything else's background, everything else
- 31:05Speaker 2: is commentary to what you say.
- 31:07Speaker 1: It can't possibly be that simple.
- 31:09Speaker 2: Yes, it became because the Savior of the world waited
- 31:14Speaker 2: until the time was right to deliver this final blow
- 31:18Speaker 2: to our ego, in this final blow to our selfishness,
- 31:23Speaker 2: and this final blow to that thing and me and
- 31:25Speaker 2: that thing and the thing in you that wants to
- 31:27Speaker 2: have my way but wants to justify it.
- 31:29Speaker 1: Because I found a gap. I found a loophole.
- 31:34Speaker 2: I'll tell you who saw this. We miss it, the
- 31:36Speaker 2: church misses it, preachers miss it. But I tell you
- 31:39Speaker 2: who didn't miss it the Apostle Paul, the first church planter.
- 31:41Speaker 1: He did not miss this.
- 31:43Speaker 2: The Apostle Paul applied this one New Testament New Covenant
- 31:46Speaker 2: command to everything.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Here's a few examples. He wrote this.
- 31:50Speaker 2: You've heard this before. Be kind and be compassionate to
- 31:53Speaker 2: one another, forgiving each other. Well should I forgive?
- 31:57Speaker 1: Yes?
- 31:57Speaker 2: Because the Bible says so? Paul says, what's a Bible?
- 32:00Speaker 2: Oh yeah, you didn't have a Bible.
- 32:01Speaker 1: So, Paul, are we.
- 32:02Speaker 2: Supposed to be kind and compassionate because you told us
- 32:04Speaker 2: to be kind and compassionate? Paul's like, are you kidding? No, Well, Paul,
- 32:09Speaker 2: why should we be kind and compassionate? Paul says, oh, well,
- 32:12Speaker 2: let me finish the statement, just as two of the
- 32:15Speaker 2: most powerful words in the New Testament. And you find
- 32:17Speaker 2: him throughout his letters, just as in Christ, God forgave you.
- 32:21Speaker 2: Why should I forgive because the Bible says forgive? No,
- 32:24Speaker 2: you forgive because you're forgiven. Why should I be patient?
- 32:28Speaker 2: Why should I be patient with her? Why should I
- 32:30Speaker 2: be kind? He's not kind to me? Why should I
- 32:32Speaker 2: be patient with her? She's not patient with me? Why
- 32:34Speaker 2: should I be kind? Why should I be patient? Show
- 32:36Speaker 2: me the verse.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Paul would say, what's a verse? Oh yeah, they didn't
- 32:40Speaker 1: have those yet.
- 32:40Speaker 2: Paul would say, No, here's why you should be patient.
- 32:42Speaker 2: Here's why you should be kind, because love is patient,
- 32:46Speaker 2: he wrote, and love is kind, And those are your
- 32:49Speaker 2: marching orders. Love does not dishonor others. Here, Essentially, love
- 32:55Speaker 2: does not dishonor Here essentially is the core ingredient of
- 32:58Speaker 2: the New Testament sexual ethic. You never do anything to
- 33:04Speaker 2: dishonor another person, even if it's consensual. If you are
- 33:08Speaker 2: a Jesus follower, Well, is there any verses that don't
- 33:11Speaker 2: have a verse? Honor him, honor her, Honor her husband,
- 33:17Speaker 2: honor his, Honor his wife, honor his children, Honor her
- 33:21Speaker 2: future relationship, honor his future marriage.
- 33:24Speaker 1: You put other people first. You don't need a verse.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Love is the mandate. Love is the command.
- 33:29Speaker 2: There is no wiggle room, there's no space to cheat,
- 33:33Speaker 2: there is no loophole. It is so uncomplicated, it's so
- 33:36Speaker 2: extraordinarily compelling.
- 33:39Speaker 1: Paul goes on.
- 33:39Speaker 2: He says this, He says this in your relationships, Oh yeah,
- 33:43Speaker 2: tell us about relationships. In fact, I'd like to do
- 33:45Speaker 2: an eight week series on relationships. And if you just
- 33:47Speaker 2: do an eight week series on relationships. You can you know,
- 33:49Speaker 2: Paul would say, you don't need eight weeks in your
- 33:52Speaker 2: relationships with one another. Just have the same mindset as
- 33:56Speaker 2: Christ Jesus. You don't need a series. You need a
- 33:59Speaker 2: three by.
- 33:59Speaker 1: Five card and just put this somewhere that when you're.
- 34:02Speaker 2: Wondering how to respond to your husband, you go, oh, yeah,
- 34:04Speaker 2: I'm to respond to my husband the way that God
- 34:06Speaker 2: through Christ responded to me when I was an idiot
- 34:08Speaker 2: and when I was an honest and when I was insecure,
- 34:10Speaker 2: and when I did the wrong thing, and when I
- 34:11Speaker 2: you know, was trying to cover for myself.
- 34:14Speaker 1: That's it. I mean, you don't need a series.
- 34:16Speaker 2: You just asked, Okay, what did God through Christ do
- 34:18Speaker 2: for me? That's what I'm supposed to do for other people.
- 34:20Speaker 2: Then here's another one. Okay, this is the church in Ephesus,
- 34:23Speaker 2: Paul writes, Follow this is kind of mushy. You want
- 34:25Speaker 2: to hear some you know, you feel like you're gonna
- 34:27Speaker 2: hear love song in the background. Follow God's example, therefore,
- 34:30Speaker 2: is dearly love children, to walk into the way of love,
- 34:34Speaker 2: the way of love. It sounds so romantic, Paul, what
- 34:36Speaker 2: do you mean the way of love. Oh, let me,
- 34:38Speaker 2: let me explain, just as Christ loved us and gave
- 34:41Speaker 2: himself up for us. Oh that sounds hard. Yeah, there's
- 34:45Speaker 2: no loophole. There are loopholes and romance. There are no
- 34:48Speaker 2: loopholes and this kind of love. Again, I could go
- 34:50Speaker 2: on and on and on and on and on. Paul
- 34:53Speaker 2: does not give Christians a bunch of things to do.
- 34:56Speaker 2: Paul gives Christians a bunch of applications for jesus Knew
- 35:00Speaker 2: Testament command, his New Covenant command, which was simple, as
- 35:04Speaker 2: I've loved you, so are you, so you are to
- 35:07Speaker 2: love one another.
- 35:08Speaker 1: That's it. That's the one commandments. That's it.
- 35:13Speaker 2: This is the fine print of the New Covenant. These
- 35:16Speaker 2: are the terms and these are the conditions. This is
- 35:20Speaker 2: the overarching ethical move This is the sort of the
- 35:24Speaker 2: overarching ethic for jesus brand new movement the Church. This
- 35:30Speaker 2: is you've heard of the ark of the Covenant. This
- 35:31Speaker 2: is the mark of the Covenant, and his first century
- 35:34Speaker 2: followers got it. In fact, his first century followers got
- 35:38Speaker 2: it their other's firstness, their willingness to put other people
- 35:41Speaker 2: before themselves in the in a culture that you know,
- 35:44Speaker 2: recognized and embraced violence. It was absolutely appalling. We talked
- 35:48Speaker 2: about this a couple of weeks ago. In a culture
- 35:49Speaker 2: that worshiped victory and strength, the idea of putting other
- 35:53Speaker 2: people first seems so weak. But this upside down kingdom
- 35:57Speaker 2: that Jesus introduced, eventually it became appealing, and then eventually
- 36:00Speaker 2: it became contagious, and it circled the globe. And we
- 36:03Speaker 2: are here today because a group of first century Christians
- 36:06Speaker 2: got this and against all odds, and I mean against
- 36:09Speaker 2: all odds, sandwich between the Temple and the Roman Empire,
- 36:12Speaker 2: with no territory, no authority, no military, they survived and
- 36:17Speaker 2: they thrived, and they were fueled by this single idea.
- 36:24Speaker 1: As I've loved you, so you must love one another.
- 36:29Speaker 2: By this all people will know that you're my follower.
- 36:34Speaker 2: By this one thing, people will know that you're my
- 36:37Speaker 2: follower if you love one another. You see, when we
- 36:46Speaker 2: get this right, people want to work for us, even
- 36:48Speaker 2: though they don't want to believe like us. When we
- 36:51Speaker 2: get this right, people want us to work for them,
- 36:54Speaker 2: even if they don't believe like us.
- 36:56Speaker 1: When you get this right, people are so happy. There's
- 36:58Speaker 1: a new church in town.
- 37:00Speaker 2: When we get this right, people are so happy that
- 37:02Speaker 2: their daughter or their son is dating a Christian.
- 37:04Speaker 1: I mean, they believe some interesting things, but my goodness,
- 37:07Speaker 1: the way they treat people.
- 37:13Speaker 2: What a night that was for those guys. I mean
- 37:15Speaker 2: they showed up thinking, oh, we're gonna have Passover. And
- 37:18Speaker 2: when the night's over, I mean their heads are spinning. Okay,
- 37:21Speaker 2: we're not doing passover anymore. You made this all about you.
- 37:23Speaker 1: That's weird.
- 37:24Speaker 2: And then you like cancel it out, Moses whole covenant,
- 37:25Speaker 2: everything we grew up with, and you put on there's
- 37:27Speaker 2: gonna be a new covenant and it's in your blood.
- 37:29Speaker 2: But Jesus, I checked, you're not even bleeding. What does
- 37:31Speaker 2: that even mean? And it's not gonna be the Bread's
- 37:34Speaker 2: gonna be your body, but your body isn't broken. And
- 37:37Speaker 2: then you washed our feet. That was like the worst
- 37:39Speaker 2: moment of my life. I was so embarrassed.
- 37:41Speaker 1: And then Judas.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Left and now you've decided you're the lawgiver and there's
- 37:45Speaker 2: just one law.
- 37:48Speaker 1: I mean, their heads are spinning.
- 37:49Speaker 2: There's no way for them to understand what had just happened.
- 37:53Speaker 2: And Jesus says, okay, I'd like to go now and pray,
- 37:56Speaker 2: let's go to the garden that we always pray. Oh
- 37:58Speaker 2: guess somebody, let's go to guess. It's dark, people won't
- 38:01Speaker 2: see us moving.
- 38:01Speaker 1: Through the streets. Try to be quiet. Let's go to
- 38:03Speaker 1: guest semony.
- 38:04Speaker 2: So I mean, they're murmuring and whispering as they make
- 38:06Speaker 2: their way to guest semony.
- 38:07Speaker 1: What in the world's going on? I find?
- 38:08Speaker 2: I mean, we haven't even really celebrated passover. He changed
- 38:11Speaker 2: all the terms, he changed all the rules. It's so confusing.
- 38:15Speaker 2: And they get to the garden. Jesus, as you pray here,
- 38:17Speaker 2: I'm gonna go pray by myself. He checks on him,
- 38:19Speaker 2: They're asleep. He wakes him up, he prays, He checks
- 38:21Speaker 2: on him.
- 38:22Speaker 1: They're asleep.
- 38:24Speaker 2: And then Judas shows up, and the text says he
- 38:28Speaker 2: showed up with a large cohort, probably several hundred people,
- 38:34Speaker 2: several hundred temple henchmen, several hundred guards from the temple,
- 38:41Speaker 2: and Jesus is arrested and his eleven followers flee for
- 38:45Speaker 2: their lives. He's taken the caiaphas at home for trial.
- 38:48Speaker 2: None of his guys show up to be witnesses.
- 38:50Speaker 1: There are other.
- 38:51Speaker 2: Witnesses testifying to things that Jesus never said, and that
- 38:54Speaker 2: Jesus never did. But the guys who had been there
- 38:56Speaker 2: the whole time, who could have told the truth, they don't.
- 38:58Speaker 1: Show up for the trial. And then they hear that
- 39:01Speaker 1: Jesus has been taken.
- 39:02Speaker 2: To Pilot, and that can only mean one thing, because
- 39:06Speaker 2: any other punishment that the religious leaders who would want
- 39:10Speaker 2: to inflict on Jesus they had the right to do.
- 39:12Speaker 2: The only reason they would need Pilot is that they
- 39:15Speaker 2: wanted Jesus put to death. So when the guys heard
- 39:20Speaker 2: that Jesus had been taken to Pilot's palace, they knew
- 39:25Speaker 2: it was over, and they knew they were probably next.
- 39:30Speaker 1: And so we will pick it up there next week.
