- 0:00In our massive country, there are card collectors throughout
- 0:04the land participating in the hobby.
- 0:07There's Mike of Junk Wax Hero and Greg of Midlife Cards.
- 0:11And while distance may separate them, here is where they come
- 0:15together to talk cards. Hey, Tony, how you doing buddy?
- 0:22Oh, don't call me Tony. Oh, Mike is back.
- 0:25Tony's gone and Mike is back. Well, welcome back, Mike.
- 0:30We're excited to have you, bud. Yeah, a big, big thanks to Tony
- 0:34for taking over for me last week.
- 0:36He did such a great. You did too, of course.
- 0:38But Tony, you know, I, I listened to that on my drive
- 0:42home from work on Monday. I think first time I've listened
- 0:47to a podcast in 5 1/2 years, ever since I stopped going into
- 0:52the office on a regular basis. Now I'm going into the office
- 0:53more and so I'm starting to do podcasts again.
- 0:56And you and Tony, I, I texted you this, I think are two people
- 1:00I could listen to for hours. You both have, there's no dead
- 1:05air, there's no filler talk. It's just consistently
- 1:09interesting conversation. Well, I genuinely love Tony.
- 1:14It's so weird because it was about 14 months ago that we met
- 1:20for the first time and he walked by me at the National and
- 1:24recognized me and actually his his buddy, his buddy recognized
- 1:30me and said, isn't that Greg? And and they stopped me and said
- 1:33hello. And then I saw him the next day
- 1:36and then I saw him again the next day and I was like, dude,
- 1:38let me just get he's all here. Why don't you get my Instagram?
- 1:41I'm like, how about I just give you my number?
- 1:44And then fast friends ever since.
- 1:46So it was, it was, you know, you weren't feeling good, but it was
- 1:51nice to have a loaded bullpen. It was like, I'm like, hey, we
- 1:55got Mariano Rivera out there, let's bring him in.
- 1:59Yeah. So.
- 2:00Yeah, he's great. I'm a huge Tony fan, big
- 2:04believer. And when you told me you had
- 2:05him, I was like, great, perfect. He's better than me.
- 2:09You, Wally pipped me as you. Now, you've been teasing
- 2:13something here for, I don't know, a week or two about an
- 2:18announcement about another podcast where you're going to be
- 2:22cheating on me. And I think people are anxious
- 2:26to hear what this is. So do you would do you want to
- 2:29share it? Yeah.
- 2:31Yeah, so I'm starting a a dual like a rotating podcast series.
- 2:36One week I'm going to be doing a series called So You Want to Be
- 2:41a dealer. And it is all about dealing.
- 2:46And I'm I'm interviewing or I shouldn't say interviewing.
- 2:49It's more of a conversation with various dealers around the
- 2:52hobby. It's not all Youtubers, although
- 2:54the first one is going to be Chris Sewell, collector,
- 2:57investor dealer, in that order. And then I have some others
- 3:02lined up that I'm really excited about.
- 3:03People that I bet 90% of the YouTube audience have never
- 3:07heard of. But they are big dealers out
- 3:10there and like one of them is on is a popular dealer on Twitter
- 3:16who has a lot of followers there.
- 3:17And I think it'll be really interesting.
- 3:20And then the other portion of this rotation is so you want to
- 3:24be a content creator. So it's so you want a rotating
- 3:27series, You want to be a this one is me interviewing content
- 3:32creators. And again, I'm going to, I will
- 3:34do some Youtubers, there's no doubt, but I'm trying to get
- 3:41other people out there that I've never talked to that are outside
- 3:44of my normal, normal sphere and get them talking about what it's
- 3:50like being a content creator. I believe my first one is Adam
- 3:54Gray. I keep on and call him Adam
- 3:56West, which I know is wrong, but every time it's four letter last
- 3:59name Adam, Adam Gray, who is mostly basketball cards.
- 4:04And I'm going to have him on to talk about basketball cards,
- 4:09some vintage, some modern, probably not much ultra modern
- 4:13with basketball. But so, you know, just talking
- 4:16about what it's like being a content creator.
- 4:19And those will roll out in the next probably 2 weeks or so. 1
- 4:24So you want to be a dealer 1st and then so you want to be a a
- 4:27content creator after that? I mean that sounds fun.
- 4:31I I I don't know if I fully knew about this.
- 4:36So you want to be a content creator part?
- 4:38I knew about the other one, but that'll be fun.
- 4:42That'll be that'll be good stuff.
- 4:43Now the channel here, the oh, hold on.
- 4:48I didn't even put our logo up. If you're watching, gosh, you
- 4:51should have. You should have told me that I
- 4:55was. Oh, look at that.
- 4:57There it is. I should wait.
- 4:59Hold on. Hold on.
- 5:00Let me do you do a magic trick. Ready.
- 5:03Pow did it. Love it.
- 5:07So so the sports card clubhouse it it now has I post my midlife
- 5:14Q and as on there, if you want to get them the soonest, it
- 5:19would be on Wednesday on my channel.
- 5:21But then on Sundays, they're going on to the podcast.
- 5:26And then we've got us, which we are on the podcast on Saturdays
- 5:31and then well, Tuesday, Thursday ish for on YouTube.
- 5:37And then we have Adam and Dylan did their their duo that they do
- 5:43which to turn back the clock, which I love and their first one
- 5:46posted on the podcast and on the YouTube channel and that was.
- 5:50Together. What's that?
- 5:52They're so good together. Oh, it's.
- 5:55It's as fun as any listen for me is listening to those two guys
- 6:00because there is a Ying and a Yang.
- 6:03You know, they are different, but they also they just have
- 6:07this just just great chemistry. So all right, well, that's
- 6:13exciting and we have more things coming to be added to the to the
- 6:19channel as well. There's been some talk about
- 6:23some things that have been, but, but once everything kind of
- 6:26officially starts happening, we'll start continuing to share.
- 6:30But I have gotten to the point where podcast listening long
- 6:35form content, 30 to 60 minutes is really my jam.
- 6:43I love listening during my work commute.
- 6:45It's a 30 minute commute door to door.
- 6:47And so I, I, I really enjoy listening to stuff.
- 6:52So this is, this is fun because I'm hoping that people out there
- 6:56are feeling that way about this, where we could just talk about
- 6:59cards, which I guess we should maybe 7 minutes in now start
- 7:02talking about cards in summer. So there were a few ideas of
- 7:08what we could talk about and, and in my last live stream, my
- 7:13midlife live #9 which was about a week and a half ago now at the
- 7:22end of the the stream, we asked the people in the chat, hey,
- 7:28what do you guys want to talk about?
- 7:30And there were two things that pop that really caught my eye.
- 7:33One was Orlando of a collector's dream.
- 7:36One of my favorite topics, I could talk about it all day
- 7:39every day is quality versus quantity.
- 7:43And so I thought that would be fun to kind of pick your brain
- 7:47on that because we're also always evolving.
- 7:50One of the reasons I bring this topic up, I don't know, a couple
- 7:53times a year is because for me, it's always changing.
- 7:57And, and I might be one way now and I might be different here in
- 8:02a few months, but all and, and because there's not a right
- 8:06answer that makes it interesting.
- 8:08And then our buddy Mookie Chilson, he also had a topic
- 8:13that, you know, is interesting. It was more topical or current
- 8:19eventi, which is if we started a syndicate, what would our first
- 8:24big purchase be for the syndicate?
- 8:27You know, taking a page out of Kevin O'leary's book.
- 8:31So which of those get you the most excited to start with?
- 8:36I'm really excited about both of them, but let's start with the
- 8:38syndicate. And I think it'll be important
- 8:40to define what we mean by a syndicate because I'm not sure
- 8:44that this is a term that everybody's familiar with.
- 8:47And you know, when I mentioned it on my channel, there were a
- 8:50bunch of people who are asking what even is a syndicate?
- 8:53So. I mean to me, I mean, are you
- 8:56asking to me? It would be like an investment
- 8:59group. It would be a group of people
- 9:02who pull money together to try to make a splash at some larger
- 9:09purchases that individually would be difficult to
- 9:14accomplish. And I think Kevin O'leary's plan
- 9:17long term and and that syndicate's group is to maybe
- 9:23sell like fractional ownership of the portfolio, but but we'll
- 9:29see. Yeah, he claims that he's
- 9:31already spent. He and his syndicate, he and
- 9:33Shine have already spent 20 or $21 million.
- 9:37But we don't know. We only know the card that was
- 9:39the 2007 upper deck, Jordan LeBron I think.
- 9:44I thought he showed. I thought I saw some more.
- 9:45There were some Kobe's, some like flawless Kobe autos in
- 9:51there. Yeah, I saw something.
- 9:54I saw something. But but that said, so if if the
- 10:00two of us pooled you know both $100 bills together, but if we
- 10:05had a, a deep pocketed group and we were going to make a major
- 10:11acquisition, what acquisition would you make?
- 10:15I have a list. So first, first and foremost, it
- 10:18is on the market right now for the first time in two years.
- 10:21It's a 1914 Baltimore News Babe Ruth.
- 10:24It's in an SGC 3 at last sold for $7.2 million two years ago.
- 10:30It's right now at $3.1 million with, I don't know, two or three
- 10:36weeks remaining on it. And that's for me the the
- 10:40perfect opportunity right now to start our syndicate of wealthy
- 10:44people like us. Yeah, I mean super wealthy.
- 10:49When when? Now let me let me back up
- 10:54because you caught me a little off guard.
- 10:56I I thought that you might go that route, but the type of
- 11:01collector I am as an individual is and we're recording this on
- 11:08Thursday, October 2nd. I have a video that posts
- 11:12Friday, October 3rd on my midlife channel and it's all
- 11:17about the main reason I collect and the thing that is the most
- 11:25exciting for me when I collect, which is the image itself, which
- 11:30is the visual of the item that I'm buying and what I do.
- 11:36And, and at this point it will have what I did in the video is
- 11:40I share my 10 favorite looking cards, not my 10 most expensive
- 11:45cards, but the 10 cards that when I see them, I just, I'm
- 11:48like, oh, that's like, it's like walking through Yosemite, you
- 11:52know, it's like just gorgeous 19. 91 tops.
- 11:56Rodger Clements. Which is actually AI have.
- 12:02I have it right behind me. Now I have to grab it.
- 12:04I know we're not supposed to show things.
- 12:06We're not supposed to show things because this is supposed
- 12:08to be a podcast, but hold on. I also have it on my wall on my
- 12:12new shelf behind me in a one touch.
- 12:16But it's one of the. Greatest cards of all time.
- 12:19A Desert Shield copy. Oh, it is definitely not the
- 12:23Desert Shield. Mine came up in a Mont
- 12:25collection. That's a beautiful It's the most
- 12:27amazing card in Red Sox history. Have you?
- 12:31Seen it? Oh, it's really not.
- 12:33It's really not the 49 Leaf, Ted Williams says.
- 12:35Have you seen my picture of that exact same spot?
- 12:39Me leaning up against the the green monster picture?
- 12:43Oh, I'll have to. Yeah.
- 12:46Now I'm going to have to put this.
- 12:48I don't want to overlay this. I will.
- 12:50I will share that soon somehow. Yeah.
- 12:53This was given to me from a viewer of the channel in A tag.
- 12:59A tag. Lab.
- 13:01Do you have any other tags labs? I have a couple.
- 13:04I was also gifted. I, I once gifted, I was gifted a
- 13:09card of I was talking about some of the most memorable looking
- 13:16cards and unique cards. And people were talking about
- 13:19the, you know, the bubble gum bakwava card and stuff.
- 13:23And there's a leaf card where Pascal Perez has super Jerry
- 13:29girl and somebody sent me A tag card of that card in A tag
- 13:35holder. So I think I have two.
- 13:37Yeah, I well, what year is that, Pascal Perez?
- 13:42I think it's 1991. I think it's the the kind of
- 13:47Gray silver bordered leaf. The second year of leaf.
- 13:49Isn't that 90? One.
- 13:50Yeah, leaf. That makes sense.
- 13:51I didn't hear the leaf part. So I don't have a single tag
- 13:56slab in my collection. I have two Beckett slabs.
- 13:58We're getting way off track here, but that's OK.
- 14:00I have two Beckett slabs out of I don't know how many slabs.
- 14:03I have 250, maybe 300. So, so back to where I was going
- 14:11after you picked the Babe Ruth Baltimore news card is I don't
- 14:16know, for me, that's an important card.
- 14:19Obviously once you've seen that card, it's kind of becomes
- 14:25memorable. But I don't know if that card
- 14:29would check enough of the beauty box for me to want to spend that
- 14:36kind of money on it. But is the syndicate just an
- 14:41investment group or is the syndicate also a collector
- 14:45investment group? That kind of changes how I might
- 14:50go with it because as an investor, I could see how that
- 14:55would be a really good buy. It's it's a highly graded Babe
- 15:00Ruth, super rare early card like, but there are a lot of
- 15:06cards that I find to be more beautiful.
- 15:09So for instance, if if we wanted to pick one card per GOAT
- 15:15athlete, right, you would probably choose the 1933 Gowdy
- 15:18Ruth yellow background, would you go with full body?
- 15:24We're talking most beautiful. Yeah, well, I I love the M1 O1
- 15:29cards and. And so that thin Babe Ruth
- 15:33throwing on the M1 O1 Ruth I'm a big fan of.
- 15:38And I don't mind black and white.
- 15:39Actually I love black and white. I would probably go the full
- 15:45body of the Gaudis but I like the M1 O ones.
- 15:49But we'd have to get a high grade if.
- 15:51'Cause we're wealth, of course. Outrageously wealthy in the
- 15:54stream. Correct, Correct.
- 15:56So yeah, Baber Ruth would definitely be in the
- 15:59conversation on what to buy. There are some Gaudi roots that
- 16:06are signed. There are Jackie Robinson Leafs
- 16:10that are signed to something like that.
- 16:12Excite. You yes, this is that was were
- 16:15on my list the 49 leaf Jackie high grade signed yeah, and you
- 16:21know as high as we could get signed, which I know there are
- 16:23very few that are actually autographed and then, you know,
- 16:27I start thinking about Mantle. I'd want to high grade 52
- 16:33signed. I obviously I'd want to find a
- 16:38grade 51 as well signed, but I would I would try to diversify.
- 16:45If you're going to spend this kind of money, we want it to be
- 16:49a extremely rare card because when you have an extremely rare
- 16:53card, then it potentially creates a bidding war if and
- 16:58when the syndicate we're going to liquidate.
- 17:01So again, I don't usually look through things through these
- 17:04eyes. I look through them of the what
- 17:06does my what is my eye attracted to?
- 17:09I don't look at it of what is the, the card that has the most
- 17:16upside. I actually think that and, and I
- 17:22don't remember who I was listening to.
- 17:25I was, oh, I was listening to Dustin Sports car Dad and John
- 17:30Mangini and, and Dustin was talking about buying lots of the
- 17:37high grade of a specific card so you could almost control the
- 17:41market. And he used the Jim Brown.
- 17:44He was like, say there are, you know, 100 Jim Brown rookies in
- 17:48an 8. That card's hard to get an high
- 17:50grade. What if you bought like 60 of
- 17:53them and you kind of controlled the market?
- 17:56And so that's an angle we could take too, is try to buy up
- 18:02something. And the card that I think might
- 18:06be the most ups and Tony and I have talked about this Southern
- 18:10collector 14 is the bond bred Jackie Robinson with the Michael
- 18:17Jordan star being now kind of it seems like the preferred card
- 18:24over the 86 flare if people are really going with that as the
- 18:30true rookie. The true rookie of the Jackie
- 18:33Robinson is the 47 bond bread, which is also a very cool image
- 18:38of him. And and you can buy them for
- 18:41about $3000 in low grade and like a one.
- 18:45And if every time one of those popped up, we bought them and we
- 18:50just like kept all other collectors from being able to
- 18:53enjoy this awesome card for our syndicate, for our evil empire
- 18:57syndicate, that would have some upside potential, I think.
- 19:01What if Jackie Robinson tears his ACL though?
- 19:03Did you think about that? That is true.
- 19:06That is true and there are a lot of injuries going on in sports
- 19:11right now. That's possible.
- 19:14I don't even think he can get through 5 innings on the mound
- 19:16these days. Not with these, not with the way
- 19:19the players are nowadays, you know?
- 19:22So you mentioned the Michael Jordan rookie cards and
- 19:25obviously my preference is the 86 player.
- 19:28I would love to have an 86 player Jordan, But in this crazy
- 19:33syndicate dream that we're having here, and I am filthy
- 19:36rich and you are filthy rich, I wouldn't.
- 19:38Of course I'd want both of those, but if I'm only choosing
- 19:421 Jordan, I'm picking the 97 PMG Precious Metal Gems red.
- 19:48There are only 90 of them that were created, 110 of Mcgrane.
- 19:53The red is beautiful with the Bulls jersey I want.
- 19:57I want that and the last one here.
- 19:59I've got some notes here. The last one that I could find
- 20:03that sold was in January PSA 5 for $378,000.
- 20:10That card right now, the same exact card is now on eBay for
- 20:13$1,000,000. Another one sold BGS 7 in 2022
- 20:20for $450,000. I mean, do you think that that
- 20:27is long term sustainable or do you think there's a correction
- 20:31on that card? Because as our evil empire
- 20:33syndicate has to consider if we're going to take over the
- 20:39sports card hobby, don't we need to make sure that we have cards
- 20:45that are are correction proof or, or is that card correction?
- 20:51Proof. I think that card is not only
- 20:53correction proof, I think it may be undervalued.
- 20:59I I don't know enough about it. I know that Nat Turner bought a
- 21:04green that was authentic not all that long ago.
- 21:07That kind of came out of the woodwork.
- 21:09The other thing about a lot of those inserts is like, OK, maybe
- 21:12there were 99 that were made, but surely some of those are
- 21:17gone forever. So it's not nearly 99 because
- 21:21nobody knew what that was when it came out of a pack.
- 21:26Right. I like the Jordan rookie, but I
- 21:30agree that the Jordan rookie is probably not something that our
- 21:36our syndicate, you know, our our is it is it Mr. Burn, Mr. Burns
- 21:41syndicate should be investing in because there's just so many.
- 21:47I really think, yeah, the 86 flare.
- 21:51I don't think that that's it. Now my a buddy of mine, a dealer
- 21:56friend, a local dealer friend and I showed his table in my
- 22:00last card show video at that card show about 2 1/2 three
- 22:04weeks ago he had a Bulls star baggie unopened and he sold it.
- 22:15That even though you can get an idea on the condition, even
- 22:20being in the baggie because the Jordan is the top card I believe
- 22:25in the baggie is insane. Like that's insane.
- 22:30Yeah. And I just saw one that sold
- 22:32recently, I think it was for $30,000.
- 22:35And I, I, I don't know if it's smarter to leave it in the
- 22:39baggy, the team bag because it's more rare in those or if it's
- 22:45smarter to grade it. I guess it would depend on the
- 22:47appearance of potential grade the, the, the I appeal of the
- 22:51card in the bag. Does it have the potential to
- 22:54get a nine or even A10, which I know is highly, highly unlikely,
- 22:59but it's a it's an intriguing thing to think about.
- 23:03Well, he was, he was kind of piling them up and, and for the
- 23:08last couple of years he's been buying them up the Jordan star
- 23:12one O 1 and that that that show he sold the baggy 1 and he also
- 23:17sold one in a, a Beckett 8 And I think the baggy 1.
- 23:22I think I, I, I should have, I should text him and ask him, but
- 23:26I'm pretty sure the baggy 1 he sold for more, which is
- 23:30interesting. So the syndicate now.
- 23:34OK, so, so we're talking about the PMG Jordan, you've got the
- 23:39Baltimore news. Babe Ruth assigned Jackie 49
- 23:47Leaf signed Ruth Gowdy M1 O1 Ruth signed Mantle tops 52 tops.
- 23:56What other is on the list for you I mean?
- 23:59Ty Cobb back T20 6TY Cobb. So for anybody not familiar it's
- 24:04the Ty Cobb T2O6 and he had his own tobacco and it had the Ty
- 24:12Cobb card. So it's the red portrait and on
- 24:16the back it says Ty Cobb. What does it say?
- 24:19Ty Cobb? Yeah.
- 24:21I I mean and it has a glossier. Jamie yes, I've I've been
- 24:27talking to Jamie and have something coming out soon from
- 24:30Jamie with an update. He now has one of them, but the
- 24:34tie cop back, The tie cop back card, the front of it has a
- 24:37glossier finish than the normal red portraits and those are
- 24:41extremely rare. There are dozens of them in
- 24:46existence. I don't remember the number in
- 24:48the global population, but it's very, very low.
- 24:51And that I would want the highest one graded.
- 24:55Now, of course, if we're a syndicate and we're investing,
- 24:58we want high grade, but also we want high, high appeal too.
- 25:02Yeah. And for me, I think the
- 25:04Syndicate, the rare is really important.
- 25:09And for that reason, the Ty Cobb back of the Ty Cobb is, is
- 25:13checking lots of boxes for me. I think that's a really good
- 25:17choice. I think that's a really good
- 25:20choice. I mean, it's Ty Cobb.
- 25:23I I, I always say though, that the, the player, the, the
- 25:27people, the humans who were players as well are who is part
- 25:35of the social fabric and who is part of in the history books,
- 25:40not sports history, but American history books, who are the names
- 25:46that you see and the Babe Ruth's and the Jackie Robinsons you
- 25:50tend to see more than some, but Ty Cobb's name is Ty Cobb and
- 25:57and Mickey Mantle's name is Mickey Mantle.
- 26:00Like there's something Cy Young. Like how many people do you know
- 26:03named Cy there? There's something about some of
- 26:08these names, like, I mean Walter Johnson, that's not as like
- 26:15exclusive of an it's not, it's not dated, it's not catchy.
- 26:19But Babe Ruth, I mean, there's something about that that I
- 26:24think is is more memorable, that there's something to that.
- 26:29Yeah, absolutely. There's the nicknames in the
- 26:33early 20th century were amazing and and they they would show up
- 26:38on cards and in more modern cards.
- 26:41The like tops didn't put a nickname on a tops card until
- 26:44like 1989 with Rock Reigns, if I remember correctly.
- 26:48I, I might be mistaken, Somebody I'm sure will correct me in
- 26:50comments. But there back in the day in the
- 26:56early 20th century, their nicknames went on cards and so
- 26:59you got to know them as well. I was going to say Stuffy
- 27:02McGuinness, but the card that Jacob Wax back Wisdom show
- 27:04didn't have his first name or his nickname on it just says
- 27:07McGuinness. So yeah, those those nicknames
- 27:11stuck with these guys. Well, and a lot of those
- 27:14nicknames were like, so unpolitically uncorrect,
- 27:18incorrect. It's like dummy tailors like
- 27:22like, I mean. I call my cats dummy, little
- 27:26dummy and big dummy. But for different reasons that
- 27:28they called this guy dummy. JJ Clark is a guy in the T2O6
- 27:33set whose nickname is beyond out of bounds.
- 27:38And and yeah, but but the nickname thing is something, the
- 27:42memorable names are something. And I'm curious about in 50
- 27:48years, in 100 years, Ty Cobb being as recognizable of a name.
- 27:54The fact that it's Ty Cobb certainly helps, But it's it's I
- 28:00think that they'll all know Jackie Robinson.
- 28:02Like, and I asked my kids this, you know, I'll say, hey, Molly,
- 28:06you know who do you do you know who Jackie Robinson is?
- 28:10Well, yeah. And she'll tell me.
- 28:11Do you know who Babe Ruth is? Yeah, she'll tell me.
- 28:14Do you know who Ty Cobb is? No.
- 28:16And I was like, OK, So there is sort of a line in the sand for
- 28:21pop culture and, you know, the social fabric of the country,
- 28:24which is is something that I think the syndicate has to keep
- 28:28in mind, you know, for the long term upside of the investments
- 28:33that we're making. Yeah, absolutely.
- 28:37All right. Do you have anything else that
- 28:38you want to add? I mean, I again, there's a lot
- 28:43of cards that I think are super important.
- 28:46But Clemente, rookie high grade. Really high grade.
- 28:50Very high grade like the 9 sold for $1.1 million.
- 28:55Hard to find that card centered, so a perfectly centered 9 that
- 29:00would work. I don't know if there are any
- 29:02autographed, but that would obviously be a a good choice.
- 29:06But like there's a ton of the Hank Aaron's autographed
- 29:09rookies, 54 tops, you know, so like you can't.
- 29:12That card is not going to go to the moon.
- 29:15Yeah, he lived forever. He.
- 29:16Lived and I think there were two 10's and one of them Nat Turner
- 29:19has so we know that he won't allow any more to be.
- 29:25We're getting into conspiracy theories now so I also.
- 29:28I also want AT2O6. Wagner got 1/2.
- 29:32One. Yeah, have to.
- 29:35Now can it have a major paper loss on the back and 20 creases
- 29:40in it like the one that was in APSA 2 holder at memory lane at
- 29:45the National or? Or APSA restored no the.
- 29:50Restored one that I saw at Strongsville.
- 29:55It was, it looked like something out of the, you know, cartoon
- 30:01section on the, the in the weekend newspaper.
- 30:06It was, it did not look even close to like a real Cardinal.
- 30:11I held it. I picked it up.
- 30:12It was still partially a Wagner and partially something else.
- 30:18It looks like if you ask ChatGPT to create an image of the T2O6
- 30:23Honest Wagner. That's that's about right, yeah,
- 30:27yeah. No.
- 30:29And, and so then you have to ask, would you want your
- 30:32syndicate to own the Greski Mcnall, Mcnall.
- 30:37Wagner I would, because. This Mcnall.
- 30:40M. CNALLI would because it's the
- 30:44first car graded by PSA. It's part of a massive federal
- 30:48investigation. We know it was trimmed and PSA
- 30:50let it through. The story behind it, it's all
- 30:54it's owned by Ken Kendrick. Probably worth $50 million or
- 30:57something crazy. Yeah, I mean, our our buddy Jeff
- 31:03went and and interviewed him and went through, went through and
- 31:10and and he shared the story about how PSA called him up and
- 31:15said, hey, you know, because because it's now proven to be
- 31:19trimmed, you know, our buyback guarantee we will pay you what
- 31:23you paid for it. Even though I thought there was
- 31:26like a lifetime Max on that, but I guess they were going to go
- 31:30past that. And and he's like, no, no, I I
- 31:34would not sell it for that because it's worth way more than
- 31:37that. That is, I mean, that has to be
- 31:40the single individual, most famous and I would think
- 31:45expensive card ever, right? Yep, when I was a kid in the
- 31:5080s, early 90s, it was always the Wagner and the 52 Tops
- 31:53mantle. Yeah, those are the the two
- 31:55cards plus the 86. Donruss can't say Co.
- 32:01I, I believe I saw that card, believe it or not, but my memory
- 32:09might be I, I definitely have seen multiple Wagners, but as a
- 32:14kid could have sworn I saw that exact one, but don't.
- 32:19Well, I guess quote me on it. But but that was like, you know,
- 32:23when hockey was moving into the warmer areas and LA Kings and
- 32:29Gretzky goes down to LA and is expanding hockey and that's when
- 32:32he bought it. And there was like so much like
- 32:35excitement around that and it was so newsworthy.
- 32:38And then the, the legend just was getting started at that
- 32:42point. All right, well, now let me just
- 32:48kind of pivot a little bit. When we talk about doing a
- 32:54syndicate, which we're obviously not going to do, this is just
- 32:57like a, you know, a mental exercise.
- 33:03It feels like we're cheating on the hobby to me.
- 33:06Like I kind of feel like I need to take a shower after this
- 33:09because we're talking about cards that we think have upside
- 33:13and that we would invest in. And, and there's so much talk
- 33:18about how, you know, that's not what the hobby's about.
- 33:22And for some people it's part of it and for some people it's all
- 33:24of it. And for some people it's none of
- 33:26it. I mean, the thought of a channel
- 33:28being called Sports Card investor is just so different
- 33:33than how a lot of us grew up thinking about the hobby and,
- 33:37and participate in it even now. But there is that element.
- 33:42So when you talk about these syndicates, when you talk about
- 33:45these investors coming in, does it kind of taint the hobby at
- 33:50all or, or is it a good thing for the hobby or is it a bad
- 33:53thing or it feels like the stock chart type thing.
- 33:59Now with the hobby it it's it's almost like a what's that?
- 34:05What's that movie where everyone's in black and white
- 34:07and then as soon as you like hook up, you turn to color or
- 34:12whatever. What was that that movie called?
- 34:14No. Oh.
- 34:17You know what I'm talking about. The Wizard of Oz.
- 34:25Where it goes from black and white to color the.
- 34:30Wizard of Oz. No, I know that one when they
- 34:32opened it up Pleasantville, did you ever see Pleasantville?
- 34:36No, came out in the late 90s and it was these two, like it was
- 34:40like they were growing up in like the 50s during like Leave
- 34:44it to Beaver type era. And then as soon as they like
- 34:49grew up to the age where they then were having like encounters
- 34:53and stuff, like they changed color.
- 34:56It's like in The Polar Express when you can no longer hear the
- 34:59bell ring kind of thing. It's like you've changed anyway.
- 35:05I don't even know what we're talking about.
- 35:06What were we talking about? We're talking about does the
- 35:12syndicate ruin the hobby? Yeah, is, is this is, is even
- 35:16looking at the hobby through this lens, is it tainting the
- 35:22whole point of it or is it just where we are?
- 35:27It's just a thought experiment for you and me having Kevin
- 35:31O'Leary and I did a video on this the day after the day we
- 35:34found out he had bought that $12.9 million car.
- 35:39And I said this is going to cause iconic cards to go up, to
- 35:47go up in value and to wait to price us out, the low value
- 35:51collectors like us out of those iconic cards.
- 35:54And I, I got, I'm not going to say I got torn apart in the
- 35:59comments, but a lot of people disagree with, which is great.
- 36:03And then a lot of people, a lot of other Youtubers did videos
- 36:07and talked about it and said, this impacts me in no way
- 36:09whatsoever. And I disagree with them because
- 36:11I think that when you have somebody like Kevin O'Leary
- 36:14going on CNBC frequently, we've seen him on several times since
- 36:17then. And I don't know what other
- 36:20channels he's on and talking about the hobby.
- 36:24And it's all about money and it's all about the value of
- 36:27cards and, and that encourages other people to invest in what
- 36:32we do. And I'm throwing up quote air
- 36:36quotes for anybody who's not watching.
- 36:39And to me, that is going to impact us, even though we are
- 36:46much smaller dollar collectors, it's going to drag up the prices
- 36:51of cards like the mega cracks. Messy, right?
- 36:58It's at the 2004. Yeah, it's going to bring up the
- 37:02values of the 49 leaf Jackie Robinson, which when I started
- 37:06my ACE 100 list two years ago, I've still got to finish it.
- 37:10I could, you could fairly easily obtain a very low grade 49 leaf
- 37:16Jackie for under $5000, which is the cut off of my list.
- 37:19And now those I believe have gone over $5000 for the minimum
- 37:24along with several of of these other iconic cards that are on
- 37:27my list. So I think that when you get
- 37:30more high dollar people influencers in it then brings up
- 37:36all these, even the PSA ones or PSA authentics.
- 37:42Now the next pivot I'm going to take with us, I think could
- 37:47could potentially extend this another hour, which we won't do.
- 37:51We'll go another 5 to 7 minutes or so trying to keep this under
- 37:5545 minutes. But now that you're back on the
- 37:59train of the podcasting and listening to podcasting, a great
- 38:06podcast is The Shallow End with Iowa Dave.
- 38:10And he did a great video the other day and he was talking or
- 38:14a podcast the other day and he said, why are we the only hobby
- 38:19that talks about values? He's like people who collect
- 38:22spoons don't don't go, oh, what's that spoon worth?
- 38:26Like how much did that go for Fine China or you know all, you
- 38:31know, original lithographs And and we're so you do disagree.
- 38:38I do disagree. I think are.
- 38:39You curious on spoon values. No, I'm not, but I think the
- 38:42people who are collecting spoons are talking about the values of
- 38:46them, and I just think that the values are lower because there
- 38:50aren't that many collectors. With baseball cards, the values
- 38:52can be significant because there's millions of collectors
- 38:55of baseball cards, whereas there may be dozens of spoon
- 38:58collectors. My mom when I was a kid
- 39:00collected Hummels because of the value, what she believed to be
- 39:05future value of them and that people collected Beanie Babies
- 39:09and a lot of people thought they were going to be massively
- 39:13valuable later on in life. So one of his things that he
- 39:17cited was he listens to a lot of podcasts and a lot of collector
- 39:23podcasts. And he said that he listened to
- 39:29a podcast about a watch collector and that they never
- 39:32mentioned value. And then he was listening to
- 39:36other podcasts and they never mentioned value.
- 39:39But if you listen to a sports card podcast, you hear value a
- 39:44lot. That was sort of his lead in of
- 39:49of the whole thought. Yeah, I don't know any spoon
- 39:54collectors. I don't.
- 39:56Know my grandmother did. Yeah, I don't know Hummel
- 39:59Collectors, although when I go to estate sales, I, I do see
- 40:02quite a few of those and they're still there late in the day.
- 40:09So I don't really know, but I, I thought it was an interesting
- 40:12question as to why. And so I don't know, like, I
- 40:19guess you don't think that that's the case, but I, I, I
- 40:24hear what you're saying too. I mean, I don't have any
- 40:27evidence to cite either way. So I don't know if that's what
- 40:31other collectors do because I don't associate with people who
- 40:34collect spoons, you know? So let's let's look at a a
- 40:38cousin collecting world, which would be comic books.
- 40:42They definitely talk about value.
- 40:44I watch, I don't watch comic book collection videos, but I
- 40:46watch a lot of video game collection videos on YouTube and
- 40:50they talk about value. They talk about value.
- 40:54Probably not as much as we do, because I don't think the values
- 40:56are nearly as high as baseball cards can be, but it is
- 41:01definitely more ingrained in the baseball card world than it is
- 41:04in other collecting worlds. But it is.
- 41:06It is still a part of those other worlds.
- 41:08Why do you think it's more ingrained?
- 41:10What's your thought as? What's your hypothesis as to
- 41:14why? Probably because it varies so
- 41:18much in the in the sports card world, we're seeing a lot of ups
- 41:22and downs. We're seeing a lot of people.
- 41:23There's a lot of movement of baseball cards.
- 41:26There's far more sellers and people are buying and selling
- 41:30cards at a much higher rate than they are of other collectibles.
- 41:34Just my guess of why that is. You're constantly hearing
- 41:39reading articles, hearing people talk about it, and that kind of
- 41:42snowballs. As more and more influencers
- 41:44talk about it, then more viewers are going to talk about it too.
- 41:51OK, you just you. Here's a left field question
- 41:55that that you just spurred in my feeble brain as the mouse was
- 42:01running along the wheel. The more that influencers talk
- 42:08about it, what percentage of card collectors do you think are
- 42:15are consuming influencer card content?
- 42:2010 to 20%. OK, SO8980 to 90% aren't hearing
- 42:27what others are saying, they're just doing their thing.
- 42:31Right. And I think those 8090% don't
- 42:33think about value that much. Yeah, Yeah, I think you're
- 42:38probably right. I thought about value a little
- 42:41bit as a kid. Oh, I thought about it a lot.
- 42:46Which is interesting that as kids opening packs of wax we
- 42:53were thinking about values, but that's a whole different
- 42:55conversation, so. Yeah, well, I was thinking about
- 42:57it because I was reading Beckett Baseball Card monthly.
- 42:59I read it several times every month and it was all about
- 43:02values. Yeah, that's true.
- 43:06That's true. So maybe it's Doctor Beckett's
- 43:08fault. A. 100%.
- 43:13All right, buddy, it's been 43 minutes.
- 43:16The Syndicate. Anything you want to wrap a bow
- 43:20around before we shut it down for Episode 4?
- 43:27I don't think so, but I do want to recommend people go out and
- 43:29buy the Reese's Peanut Buttercup, Oreo or Oreo Reese's
- 43:34peanut butter cups. Oh man, they are so good.
- 43:37Really not sponsored by peanut butter Cups or Oreos?
- 43:40But yeah, you accept the sponsorship from them.
- 43:44Absolutely. All right, so to our friends
- 43:49over at whoever owns them. The Mars.
- 43:52Mars or Hershey or something? Hershey.
- 43:54Yeah, yeah, something like that. I would, I'd yes, come offer us
- 43:59free candy, OK? Yeah, I'm like Framer Kramer in
- 44:05Seinfeld when they were going to offer him like 1/4 of
- 44:07$1,000,000. We're gonna offer him free
- 44:10coffee for life and a quarter of $1,000,000 and they get to him
- 44:14and they say we'd like to offer you 1/4 of $1,000,000 or no,
- 44:17we'd like to offer you free coffee for life and and then he
- 44:20just shakes their hand and takes up the free coffee for life.
- 44:23Doesn't need the money. I will take free peanut butter
- 44:25cups for life. OK, I mean, can't argue with
- 44:29you. I love chocolate, and peanut
- 44:31butter is the best combo above peanut butter and Jelly.
- 44:37It's peanut butter and chocolate.
- 44:38So. Yeah.
- 44:40All right. Well, thank you, my friend, for
- 44:42finding time in your week to go through this exercise together.
- 44:48To everybody out there who hates card value talk, you're welcome,
- 44:53even though you're still not listening.
- 44:54But that's OK because we'll be back next week with something
- 44:58else. Maybe we'll.
- 45:00We'll see. Maybe.
- 45:02All right. Thanks everybody.
