- 0:00Speaker 1: Let's just start with when when did you notice a
- 0:02Speaker 1: turnaround in this team? And I mean your run has
- 0:05Speaker 1: been amazing, but you know, we just had David Benedict
- 0:08Speaker 1: down the other day and he talked about starting the
- 0:10Speaker 1: season where he played like twenty road games and two
- 0:13Speaker 1: home games. How do you turn things around mentally even
- 0:16Speaker 1: though you played a lot of those early road games.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's really what it came down to. I mean,
- 0:22Speaker 2: looking back, I can see the change happening when we
- 0:24Speaker 2: got home. It was really as simple as that. I mean,
- 0:29Speaker 2: we did not sleep in our own but this is
- 0:31Speaker 2: the third Thursday since January that I've slept in my own.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Bet that'll be tonight. It just it's we were gone
- 0:40Speaker 2: eight in a row, you know, didn't you know? That
- 0:43Speaker 2: is a long time to be on the road, and
- 0:46Speaker 2: when you are home, you're home for maybe forty eight hours,
- 0:49Speaker 2: maybe sixty hours, and then you're turning around and going
- 0:51Speaker 2: on a plane somewhere warmer and supposedly better to play.
- 0:55Speaker 2: But it's challenging, just you know, not just these guys
- 0:58Speaker 2: are young. They can handle the physical stuff to a
- 1:00Speaker 2: certain extent, but it's the mentality and also the thing
- 1:04Speaker 2: that I didn't really do the calculus on sufficiently enough
- 1:08Speaker 2: and learned from now is just to have that many
- 1:12Speaker 2: in a row, We've got to have some. We've got
- 1:14Speaker 2: to have a home series before North Dakota State does,
- 1:17Speaker 2: or before the University of Maine does. We were the
- 1:20Speaker 2: last team in Division one baseball. I think there's three
- 1:22Speaker 2: hundred and ten of us to have a home weekend
- 1:25Speaker 2: series this year. That can't be. And the reason that
- 1:29Speaker 2: I said I didn't do the calculus was we really
- 1:33Speaker 2: missed our facility. We missed the reps. We missed not
- 1:36Speaker 2: just the games, but what happens between the games. And
- 1:40Speaker 2: you don't get that on the road. You know, a
- 1:42Speaker 2: forty minute batting practice pregame does not sufficiently prepare you
- 1:46Speaker 2: or build you up for the season. And one of
- 1:49Speaker 2: the things that we've got to make an adjustment on
- 1:51Speaker 2: is just being here a little bit longer, a little
- 1:53Speaker 2: bit in March, so that the guys can get into
- 1:55Speaker 2: the Riser Performance Center and get their indoor hacks and
- 1:58Speaker 2: you know, get into the training room, the weight rooms
- 2:00Speaker 2: right there and utilize the facility. And you know, Robert's
- 2:04Speaker 2: such a game of repetition and routine. You take the
- 2:08Speaker 2: guys out of their routine and put them on the road.
- 2:10Speaker 2: It just makes it that much harder to play and compete.
- 2:14Speaker 2: And we did not compete well. You know, we had
- 2:17Speaker 2: fits and starts. I mean people got excited, Oh you
- 2:20Speaker 2: beat Vanderbilt or you know, you beat North Carolina, and
- 2:22Speaker 2: those are nice wins. You know. We also we also
- 2:27Speaker 2: played really poorly and didn't win. We played some we
- 2:30Speaker 2: played poorly when we got home a few times and
- 2:32Speaker 2: still won. And that's when I knew, Okay, when you
- 2:34Speaker 2: play poorly and you can still win, you might have
- 2:36Speaker 2: a pretty good team. And we've been able to withstand,
- 2:40Speaker 2: you know, a really poor pitching year frankly, I mean
- 2:43Speaker 2: we have not pitched well, yet we've been able to
- 2:46Speaker 2: outscore teams in the last month or so we have it.
- 2:49Speaker 2: We've defended probably below our standard all year, with the
- 2:54Speaker 2: exception of center fields, where Caleb spur has been just outstanding,
- 2:58Speaker 2: and yet we've been able to score people. And it's
- 3:00Speaker 2: a dangerous way to compete because he can't hitting comes
- 3:05Speaker 2: and goes. But hopefully it's going to stay with us
- 3:07Speaker 2: for a little while longer.
- 3:08Speaker 3: The one thing that we were wondering about or at
- 3:11Speaker 3: least when we look at the pitching staff is like,
- 3:13Speaker 3: what we see now is not what we thought way
- 3:16Speaker 3: before this season started. What was going to happen as
- 3:18Speaker 3: far as guys and their roles and what they're expected
- 3:21Speaker 3: to do this season and where they are now. When
- 3:23Speaker 3: you have conversations with some of your guys that were
- 3:25Speaker 3: probably penciled in as a Friday, Saturday or Sunday starter
- 3:28Speaker 3: and now find themselves in the pen, or guys that
- 3:31Speaker 3: were in the pen now find themselves as starters, what
- 3:33Speaker 3: were those conversations like and how has that worked throughout
- 3:36Speaker 3: the season.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Yeah, and some of them are unusable. You know, some
- 3:39Speaker 2: of those guys that we were planning on just can't
- 3:42Speaker 2: compete right now. They just can't get it done. You know,
- 3:45Speaker 2: gave Van him and feel terrible for he just lost
- 3:48Speaker 2: command to the strike zone. Just the guy that was
- 3:51Speaker 2: just so dominant against Oklahoma, one of the best offensive
- 3:54Speaker 2: teams in college baseball last year and goes to the
- 3:57Speaker 2: Cape League and is a Cape League All Star, which
- 4:00Speaker 2: at him and has a solid fall for us, and
- 4:02Speaker 2: for whatever reason, he just he's really struggling to throw
- 4:06Speaker 2: strikes with anything. And so it's you know, we haven't
- 4:10Speaker 2: been able to use him. We tried to get him
- 4:11Speaker 2: right on a Saturday and a big with a huge
- 4:14Speaker 2: leading against Villanova, and he just just couldn't do it.
- 4:17Speaker 2: So Ian Cook is another guy who's been really good
- 4:21Speaker 2: in spurts for us over his career here. You know,
- 4:24Speaker 2: we were hoping that we could count on him to
- 4:26Speaker 2: be a solid Friday or Saturday starter. He's emerged from
- 4:30Speaker 2: the pen to perform better and so we're kind of
- 4:34Speaker 2: sticking with that formula. But we have had some guys
- 4:36Speaker 2: step up. I don't want to be all gloom and doom.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Brady Aftam has been a real bright spot. We thought
- 4:41Speaker 2: he'd be a great closer. He's been better than great,
- 4:45Speaker 2: you know, and he's in his last year with us,
- 4:46Speaker 2: a try captain really happy for him. And then he's
- 4:48Speaker 2: had a couple of guys, a couple lefties step up
- 4:51Speaker 2: in Oliver Pudvar on Fridays and Charlie West the young
- 4:55Speaker 2: guy at young left hander on Sunday who really kind
- 4:58Speaker 2: of steadied the ship, so to speak, with a lot
- 5:02Speaker 2: of help from from guys in the pen, like new
- 5:04Speaker 2: guys like Greg Shaw, you know, kind of steadying everybody.
- 5:09Speaker 2: So we've got. You know, I've got six or seven
- 5:12Speaker 2: guys that we really trust. I need to find a
- 5:16Speaker 2: couple more if we're going to make a run, you know,
- 5:19Speaker 2: and and compete in the postseason. But you know, there
- 5:23Speaker 2: have been some bright spots too. It's not all gloom
- 5:26Speaker 2: and doom.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Talking to Jim Pender's head coach, yukon baseball, you know,
- 5:30Speaker 1: you got another week of games before you start tournaments
- 5:33Speaker 1: and stuff. How how do you get your pitching staff ready?
- 5:37Speaker 1: Like you said, it's been kind of a roller coaster
- 5:39Speaker 1: all season long, and you know, how do you get
- 5:41Speaker 1: some of these guys to get the mindset? I know,
- 5:43Speaker 1: playing with guys, they didn't want to leave the rotation
- 5:46Speaker 1: and go to the bullpen. They think that's some kind
- 5:47Speaker 1: of big emotion. But if you look at the major
- 5:50Speaker 1: league level, you've got eight guys in the bullpen. Now
- 5:53Speaker 1: what's that conversation like? And and are some guys not
- 5:56Speaker 1: receptive to it?
- 5:58Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean we we're constantly communicating, you know, And
- 6:03Speaker 2: really I tell the guys like, listen, you make out
- 6:05Speaker 2: the rotation. I don't make it out. You make out
- 6:07Speaker 2: the bullpen. I don't break it out. You make out
- 6:09Speaker 2: the lineup? I don't make it out. Your performance is
- 6:12Speaker 2: what it is, and they are you know, it can
- 6:15Speaker 2: be somewhat upsetting and shocking to you know, let's face it,
- 6:22Speaker 2: there's a lot of the guys that we have to
- 6:24Speaker 2: recruit that are coming from situations where the baseball is
- 6:27Speaker 2: not merit based or performance based. You know, their moms
- 6:31Speaker 2: and dads are writing checks for forty five hundred bucks
- 6:33Speaker 2: a summer and they're getting their two innings, they're two
- 6:36Speaker 2: at bats every game. And that's just not how it
- 6:40Speaker 2: goes here. Because last time I checked David ben At,
- 6:43Speaker 2: it can fire me if we lose enough games, and
- 6:46Speaker 2: will if we lose enough games. So therefore, it's going
- 6:49Speaker 2: to be merit based. If you're good, if you perform well,
- 6:52Speaker 2: you're going to get the ball again. And I tell
- 6:54Speaker 2: them all, I say, assume that I'm the dumbest coach
- 6:56Speaker 2: in America. And make it blatantly obvious to me that
- 6:58Speaker 2: you belong as the Friday night starter, you belong as
- 7:01Speaker 2: a Saturday starter, you're a closer, or you're o a
- 7:03Speaker 2: sixth inning setup guy or whatever it may be. You know,
- 7:08Speaker 2: make it blatantly obvious to me. And that's the thing
- 7:10Speaker 2: that's been frustrating is that we just haven't had enough
- 7:12Speaker 2: pictures that have made it blatantly obvious this is what
- 7:15Speaker 2: I'm going to do for us. So there's still time,
- 7:18Speaker 2: you know, and we're giving guys opportunities left and right.
- 7:22Speaker 2: We had a couple live hitting performance or live at
- 7:25Speaker 2: bats yesterday the day before, and we're going to have
- 7:28Speaker 2: a couple more here in about an hour, and those
- 7:31Speaker 2: are all recorded. You know. We try to make it
- 7:33Speaker 2: as life or as game like as possible, as the
- 7:36Speaker 2: light's on and pressure and try to simulate that. But
- 7:40Speaker 2: as you know, Rob, there's no substitute for you know,
- 7:43Speaker 2: the light's actually going on and you're having to do
- 7:45Speaker 2: it at seven o'clock in front of a crowd, and
- 7:49Speaker 2: that's when you really find out who can help you
- 7:50Speaker 2: and who can't. So and we're getting down to that time.
- 7:54Speaker 2: You know, every game is really important. I do like
- 7:56Speaker 2: the fact that we have been we've really been competing
- 7:59Speaker 2: in postseason since mid March because we've kind of had
- 8:01Speaker 2: to win every game and almost have. So there's our
- 8:05Speaker 2: backs have be into the wall for a long time.
- 8:07Speaker 2: I think that will serve us well. If we can
- 8:09Speaker 2: if we can kick the door in and get into
- 8:11Speaker 2: that party.
- 8:12Speaker 3: And you've got so many bats you can rely on.
- 8:15Speaker 3: You got the over six guys, seven guys that are
- 8:17Speaker 3: hitting three hundred plus. This is the one thing I
- 8:19Speaker 3: love about your squad is the speed. You've got. See
- 8:23Speaker 3: five guys that have ten stolen bags. You got another
- 8:26Speaker 3: guy with nine, and Doherty two guys and Biller and
- 8:30Speaker 3: Spur that have over twenty bags. Spurs got thirty six.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Right now, I mean, who's the fastest guy on the team, Like,
- 8:36Speaker 3: it's tough to know, Like you don't really line them
- 8:39Speaker 3: up on the on the foul line, but if you do,
- 8:41Speaker 3: like who would win that race?
- 8:43Speaker 2: Spurs probably winning the race. So the numbers kind of
- 8:45Speaker 2: bear out the right way there. Biller is a close second.
- 8:49Speaker 2: But they both I think have the best knack for
- 8:52Speaker 2: understanding when to go, when not to go, who to
- 8:54Speaker 2: set up, who you can't set up, who you can't
- 8:56Speaker 2: set up. Spurs probably the best ive ever coached at
- 9:01Speaker 2: stealing third base. Just really knows when to do it
- 9:04Speaker 2: and has a great feel for that. But yeah, I
- 9:08Speaker 2: mean there's some some Linus were running out there. Seven
- 9:10Speaker 2: or eight guys can can really steal bases. So We've
- 9:13Speaker 2: put a lot of pressure on defenses with that speed
- 9:16Speaker 2: all year, and we finally started clicking in the batter's
- 9:20Speaker 2: box over the last month too, and guys have really
- 9:24Speaker 2: skyrocketed their averages and they're on base percentages and to
- 9:27Speaker 2: be to be frank, the arms that we've seen have
- 9:30Speaker 2: not been as good as the arms that we saw
- 9:32Speaker 2: in the first six seven weeks of the season. So
- 9:36Speaker 2: I think, you know, going up against the teams that
- 9:38Speaker 2: we went up against, Florida Atlantic, for instance, had a
- 9:40Speaker 2: great staff, I mean outstanding pitching. Miami was was decent.
- 9:46Speaker 2: You know, we saw some decent arms down in Puerto Rico.
- 9:48Speaker 2: To open the season. We go out to l A
- 9:50Speaker 2: and c USC and u C. L A and Vanderbilt.
- 9:53Speaker 2: You know, there was some really good competition in there,
- 9:55Speaker 2: so we went up against the best early. I think
- 9:58Speaker 2: it's you know, it certainly continuing to serve us well.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Now we just had to get through the madness. You know,
- 10:04Speaker 2: I've been using the line that March madness for baseball
- 10:07Speaker 2: is something completely different than it is for basketball.
- 10:10Speaker 3: It really is.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Madness, and it elevates all the coaches blood pressures, and
- 10:15Speaker 2: you know, you try, you just try to get through
- 10:17Speaker 2: it and not bury yourselves too badly. But when we
- 10:22Speaker 2: were seven games under five hundred, it wasn't looking so hot,
- 10:25Speaker 2: but these guys kept fighting, and now we're in a
- 10:28Speaker 2: position to potentially win another Big East regular season title.
- 10:30Speaker 2: We need a little bit of help, but if we
- 10:33Speaker 2: take care of business this weekend, I think we have
- 10:35Speaker 2: a good chance of doing that for a fifth time
- 10:38Speaker 2: in a row and being the number one seed in
- 10:40Speaker 2: the Big East Tournament.
- 10:42Speaker 1: I borrow so much from talking to you coaches, whether
- 10:44Speaker 1: it's Hurley or Gino or Mike Cavanaugh, and try to
- 10:48Speaker 1: apply it to fifteen and sixteen you baseball players, especially
- 10:51Speaker 1: the fundamental stuff, the bunting, the base running and stuff
- 10:55Speaker 1: like that. But I also I like Mike Kavanaugh. He says, listen,
- 10:58Speaker 1: you know, I tried to prepare my guys this year
- 10:59Speaker 1: to taking varsity jobs. You're not going to be, you know,
- 11:02Speaker 1: well liked when you're a sophomore and you take a
- 11:05Speaker 1: senior's job. You know, and I appreciate it because our
- 11:10Speaker 1: listeners need to know, you know, what a d one coach,
- 11:15Speaker 1: what's in their mind, and what you're telling these players,
- 11:18Speaker 1: because it's hard. I coach in all these AAU tournaments,
- 11:21Speaker 1: and you're right, they're paying four grand to play in
- 11:24Speaker 1: these tournaments and they think their kids should be the
- 11:26Speaker 1: leadoff hitter and starting pitcher in every game. How do
- 11:30Speaker 1: you deal with that? I mean, how do you deal
- 11:32Speaker 1: with the parents as well. I know I've asked you
- 11:34Speaker 1: this before, but I want our new listeners to hear this.
- 11:37Speaker 1: You know, when when Johnny's not playing enough, I'm not
- 11:40Speaker 1: happy and you might learn from a parent or something.
- 11:43Speaker 1: What's that conversation?
- 11:44Speaker 2: Like? Yeah, I don't hear from as many parents as
- 11:47Speaker 2: I did when I was a young thirty one year
- 11:49Speaker 2: old head coach or thirty two year old head coach.
- 11:53Speaker 2: You know. Now they're closer to my age and they
- 11:55Speaker 2: might have a harder time. But occasionally you get a
- 11:58Speaker 2: late night email or once in a great while, and
- 12:02Speaker 2: if that happens, then the players know. They sign off
- 12:05Speaker 2: on the fact that I will I pledge to them,
- 12:10Speaker 2: I will immediately contact you if your parent reaches out
- 12:13Speaker 2: with regard to anything baseball related, and we will be
- 12:18Speaker 2: we will. I owe it to you to make sure
- 12:20Speaker 2: that you know because I'm coaching you and not your parents,
- 12:23Speaker 2: and that usually stops it pretty quickly so, and I said,
- 12:29Speaker 2: I'll be happy to meet with you and them, but
- 12:33Speaker 2: I won't speak with them. You know, it's I will
- 12:37Speaker 2: protect you. I'm not going to talk to them about
- 12:39Speaker 2: your play. I'm happy to talk to the parents about
- 12:42Speaker 2: their social development, their academic profile, anything other than baseball.
- 12:47Speaker 2: But we do, you know, and I do feel at
- 12:50Speaker 2: times it feels a little unnatural because we do recruit
- 12:53Speaker 2: the parents with the players, and then you know, I
- 12:57Speaker 2: try not to. I try not to engage with parents
- 13:00Speaker 2: while there while there are players. I mean, I've learned
- 13:04Speaker 2: how to jog quickly, like I'm I have to hurry
- 13:07Speaker 2: to the bathroom or something. If I see a bunch
- 13:09Speaker 2: of parents, the phone up.
- 13:11Speaker 1: I love that.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Phone call. Phone goes up to the year often when
- 13:17Speaker 2: I see parents and there's nobody on the other line.
- 13:20Speaker 2: But I'm talking talking to myself. And you know, my
- 13:24Speaker 2: father coached at East Catholic High School in Manchester, Connecticut
- 13:27Speaker 2: for forty four years. In one place, he said, the
- 13:29Speaker 2: kids didn't change in those forty four years. The kids
- 13:31Speaker 2: didn't change with the parents changed one hundred and eighty degrees.
- 13:34Speaker 2: And if he has a second life, he'd like to
- 13:36Speaker 2: come back as a coach at an orphanage, and he
- 13:43Speaker 2: didn't know who the parents were, you know, when he
- 13:45Speaker 2: first started in the late sixties, because they didn't come
- 13:47Speaker 2: to games. They were working, you know, and and by
- 13:51Speaker 2: the time he finished, there were practices, you know, and
- 13:54Speaker 2: it was a completely different animal. So no, I think
- 13:58Speaker 2: the parents learned very quick. And the ones that don't
- 14:00Speaker 2: get it, those kids don't last, you know, they leave,
- 14:03Speaker 2: and that's fine, you know, they just they just won't
- 14:05Speaker 2: fit in here. But I can't coach your son if
- 14:07Speaker 2: you won't let me. If i'm if, I'm going between
- 14:10Speaker 2: you and him, and it's not going to work. So
- 14:14Speaker 2: it's very hard. And as a parent myself, it's one
- 14:17Speaker 2: of the toughest things, right to turn over, you know,
- 14:19Speaker 2: to to entrust another person to, you know, for the
- 14:22Speaker 2: well being of your your son or daughter, very difficult
- 14:25Speaker 2: to do. But I think it's an absolute necessity if
- 14:27Speaker 2: you're really going to help them realize their potential as
- 14:30Speaker 2: a player and as a person.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Not only are you a baseball coach and a psychologist,
- 14:34Speaker 3: but also I've I've learned over the years the Division
- 14:37Speaker 3: one baseball coach is the best weather man in the
- 14:41Speaker 3: state and you are you and your staff are always
- 14:44Speaker 3: on it. You have to be. It is like a
- 14:46Speaker 3: way of life as a D one baseball coach because
- 14:49Speaker 3: you know, you got to get these games in and
- 14:50Speaker 3: you don't get like help like Major League Baseball does,
- 14:53Speaker 3: and you can't maneuver things as easy. Give me some
- 14:56Speaker 3: weather tips of your staff, like what sites do you go?
- 14:59Speaker 3: Like what do you looking at? And are you are
- 15:01Speaker 3: you a believer in cows laying down equals rain?
- 15:06Speaker 2: No? I you know what, We've got enough cows in
- 15:09Speaker 2: stores to be able to predict it, I guess, but
- 15:11Speaker 2: I haven't figured that one out yet. We use a
- 15:14Speaker 2: bunch of different sites and we're always arguing about it.
- 15:17Speaker 2: I mean every every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday leading up to
- 15:19Speaker 2: the weekend, we're arguing about it. And today I've got
- 15:22Speaker 2: to be the one that ultimately makes a call about
- 15:24Speaker 2: the weekend. So we have a meteorology that we're fortunate
- 15:27Speaker 2: and that we have a subscription with an actual live
- 15:30Speaker 2: meteorologist that we'll call kind of for the last the
- 15:33Speaker 2: last like look see before we make a decision on
- 15:36Speaker 2: moving gain times or moving game dates. And we did
- 15:39Speaker 2: that this morning. So we thought it was in our
- 15:41Speaker 2: best interest. You know that the meteorologists said he'll be nameless,
- 15:45Speaker 2: but he said, yeah, you're gonna probably have an hour,
- 15:50Speaker 2: maybe two in a row of dry tomorrow. But I
- 15:53Speaker 2: can't tell you when. You know, it looks like it's
- 15:55Speaker 2: going to rain all day, so I don't want to
- 15:58Speaker 2: be looking at Butler across the field in their dugout
- 16:01Speaker 2: and thus in our dugout with the rain drops calling
- 16:04Speaker 2: for you know, falling. So we look, it looks like
- 16:06Speaker 2: we've got a good enough window on Saturday. We hope
- 16:08Speaker 2: your listeners will come out for a Saturday doubleheader at noon,
