- 0:08The Book of Ruth begins in dark days,
- 0:11but even in the darkness, God was at work. Through loss,
- 0:15uncertainty, and unexpected turns, we discover
- 0:19a beautiful story of grace, redemption,
- 0:22and hope. Join Scott Pauley for this new study, The Gospel
- 0:26According to Ruth. Light for Dark Days.
- 0:37It is not uncommon in our world today to hear people talk about being
- 0:41self-made people, a self-made man, a self-made
- 0:45woman, a self-made business person. But may
- 0:50I just tell you that first of all, that's a real misnomer because
- 0:53Nobody makes something of themselves. All of
- 0:57us are products of the people who invest in us and influence
- 1:02us and whose life intersects with our lives.
- 1:05The truth of the matter is, even if you say, well, I, I'm the
- 1:09one who put forth the effort and I had to work for all of this—
- 1:11yes, but somewhere God used someone in your life.
- 1:16But let's back up from that just a step. And let
- 1:20me point out to you that even if there was such a thing as a
- 1:23self-made person, the greatest life in the world is never
- 1:27the self-made life. Rather,
- 1:31it is the God-made life. And here's the reason for that: because
- 1:35God is the— God is the one who gave you life.
- 1:38God is the giver of all good gifts. So the great life
- 1:42is not what you can produce, But rather it
- 1:46is a life of fruitfulness, and fruit is something only God
- 1:50can produce. In fact, I think the, the verbiage in
- 1:54Ruth chapter 4 is very, very important because it talks
- 1:58about being fruitful. And this is so important.
- 2:02John chapter number 15, uh, it is we who bear the
- 2:06fruit, but it is he who produces the fruit.
- 2:11Look, you walk through a garden, you don't brag on the vegetables,
- 2:16you brag on the gardener, the, the one who actually
- 2:20cultivated it, who made it possible, who,
- 2:23who ministered to it in such a way that it could bear fruit. Look,
- 2:27friends, we're all just in God's produce department,
- 2:30and if the best we can do is what we can produce, that's, that's far
- 2:34short of what God has for us. No, The great life
- 2:39is a God-made life. And so we
- 2:43return right to where we left off the other day in the prayer that these
- 2:46people prayed for the union of Boaz and
- 2:50Ruth. Let me read it to you again. Ruth chapter 4,
- 2:53verses 11 through 13. And all the people
- 2:56that were in the gate and the elders said, we are witnesses.
- 3:01And then here is the blessing. That they brought. You know, people come
- 3:04to a wedding, they bring wedding gifts, they give kind greetings,
- 3:09but the greatest blessing is the spiritual blessing. Here's the blessing: The
- 3:13Lord make the woman that has come into thine
- 3:16house like Rachel and like Leah,
- 3:21which 2 did build the house of Israel. And do
- 3:25thou worthily in Ephratah and be famous in Bethlehem And
- 3:29let thy house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bare
- 3:33unto Judah, of the seed which the Lord shall give of this young woman.
- 3:37So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife.
- 3:41And when he went in unto her, the Lord gave her conception, and she bare
- 3:45a son. Now, does Boaz have a part? Yes.
- 3:48Does Ruth have a part? Yes. But I want to point out to
- 3:52you that the emphasis of the passage is on the Lord. This is very important.
- 3:57Because while we have a responsibility, it is God.
- 4:02Salvation is of the Lord. Every good thing in my life
- 4:06is because of the Lord. Would you mark in verse number 11 this
- 4:09phrase, the Lord make? This is the life worth living.
- 4:13You want a life worth living? Let it be the God-made life.
- 4:16The Lord make. And then in verse number 12,
- 4:20mark this phrase, the Lord shall give.
- 4:24So the Lord makes, the Lord gives, and then
- 4:28again in verse number 13, the Lord gave. Isn't that beautiful?
- 4:31So what they prayed was answered. The blessing that they anticipated,
- 4:35what they believed God to do, the Lord did that. And I might add,
- 4:38we're about to come to this, much more than they expected,
- 4:42much more than they imagined. The Lord
- 4:46gave and the Lord made it so. Ruth's life
- 4:50is not a Ruth-made life or even just a Boaz-made
- 4:54life. It is a God-made life.
- 4:58Like everyone, Ruth had a past, but now,
- 5:02now she has a future. And maybe I'm talking to somebody today and
- 5:06you, you're thinking so much of your past. Maybe the blessings
- 5:10of your past are so big in your mind you can't imagine any more blessing.
- 5:14I want you to know that God always saves the best for
- 5:18last. Maybe it is the blemishes and the blots and
- 5:22the blights on your past, and they weigh you
- 5:25down. Your own sin, your own failure, what someone
- 5:28else did, what somebody said, something you can't seem to get over.
- 5:33I want to tell you, friend, everybody has a past, but God
- 5:37has made it so that you and I can get past our past.
- 5:41See, the God of the Bible is not the God of the past. He is
- 5:44the God of the present and the God of the future. He is the eternal
- 5:47God. He is God from beginning to end and everything
- 5:51in between. And whatever your past, I want to tell you
- 5:54today that with the Lord, with the Lord, I can confidently tell
- 5:58you, you do have a future. Now everything has
- 6:02changed for Ruth. For example, now she
- 6:06has peace. In verse 9 and 10, her debt was paid.
- 6:09This was a woman who was in debt and she couldn't pay
- 6:13the debt. Sound familiar? Yes, but our Lord Jesus
- 6:17Christ has paid the debt in full. He takes care of
- 6:21the past. He pays the debt. He, he brings us from poverty to riches,
- 6:25from death to life. Blessed be the name of our great Redeemer.
- 6:30We now have peace with God. That's a God-made life.
- 6:33And now she not only has peace, now she has provision.
- 6:37And the verses that we just read, verse 11, 12, and 13, she gets
- 6:41more than the material, more than money. Let me tell you what the greatest blessing
- 6:44in life is. The greatest blessing in life is people.
- 6:48The greatest blessing in life are the, the people that
- 6:51God has given you to love and the people God has given you to influence.
- 6:56The greatest treasure I have is my wife,
- 6:59our children, our grandchildren, my,
- 7:02my parents, even my sister. You know you're getting old when you
- 7:06start to love your siblings, you know. But all of our family, aunts and uncles,
- 7:11These are the people, and spiritually speaking, people in the family of God
- 7:15the Lord has given to minister to me and me to minister to them.
- 7:18This is the greatest provision of all.
- 7:21Notice, we'll come back to this in verse 11,
- 7:25they pray that she will be so fruitful she'll
- 7:29be like Rachel and Leah, and then in verse
- 7:33number 12, like Perez. We'll come back and talk
- 7:37about who these people are, but the point is they were praying that she would
- 7:40have children. That she would have the divine provision, what God alone can
- 7:45give. And God answered that prayer. It's a God-made life.
- 7:48And now she has peace, and now she has provision, and now she
- 7:52has purpose. We'll come back to this thought as well, uh,
- 7:56but it is this— I love this— in verse number 11: Do thou worthily
- 8:00in Ephratah and be famous in Bethlehem.
- 8:03Would you like to know what your purpose is? It's to make your Redeemer famous.
- 8:07It's not just to be blessed, it is to be a blessing.
- 8:11And, and if you continue reading, uh, the rest of the chapter,
- 8:14the end of the Book of Ruth, which we will come to, you'll find
- 8:18that she now has a place. She's accepted into the lineage
- 8:22of Christ. I mean, she— this woman is going to show up in
- 8:25the genealogical record of Messiah. Think how far she's
- 8:30come. Was that because of Ruth? No. Was that because She earned
- 8:34it. She was somebody. She got in there and made it happen and got it
- 8:37done. No, this is the divine favor. This is grace,
- 8:40people. This is what only the Lord can do. We are accepted
- 8:45in the Beloved. Some of you are looking for acceptance.
- 8:49You're having a hard time finding it. You're having a hard time finding your place.
- 8:53Well, I want you to know, you come to Jesus and Christ brings you to
- 8:57God, and in God you find everything you've been searching
- 9:01for all along. This is the Gospel According to Ruth,
