- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, good morning, listeners. Thank you for listening to Lament
- 0:03Speaker 1: of Hope podcast. And thank you for listening, watching, whichever
- 0:07Speaker 1: platform you're on.
- 0:10Speaker 2: That is such a good question. I wish I had
- 0:13Speaker 2: a very clever answer to that one. But the reality,
- 0:18Speaker 2: I think, is that, or at least for me, the
- 0:22Speaker 2: way it's been for me, is that If anything, my
- 0:28Speaker 2: passion for food has improved with me doing it professionally
- 0:34Speaker 2: because the fact that I had to do it professionally
- 0:37Speaker 2: means that I had to put an extra layer of
- 0:40Speaker 2: attention to the details of what I'm doing. If I'm
- 0:43Speaker 2: writing a book and I want to make sure that
- 0:46Speaker 2: the lady in Chicago makes the pizza exactly the way
- 0:50Speaker 2: I make it at home, I have to be 100%
- 0:53Speaker 2: sure that my recipe is foolproof, that I've tested it
- 0:59Speaker 2: a team times, and that is very robust, which is
- 1:04Speaker 2: a level of perfectionism that you don't necessarily have if
- 1:11Speaker 2: you're just baking for your family or for your close friends.
- 1:15Speaker 2: It doesn't matter whether the recipe is super robust because
- 1:18Speaker 2: it's yours. You're never going to give it to anybody else.
- 1:20Speaker 2: You know how it works. That's fine. That's enough. So
- 1:23Speaker 2: from that perspective, going professional has made me even more,
- 1:29Speaker 2: what's the word? It's made me pay even more attention
- 1:35Speaker 2: to detail when it comes to recipes, foods, flavor, textures,
- 1:38Speaker 2: getting the ideal sponge texture, et cetera. It does detract
- 1:43Speaker 2: from the enjoyment a little when you have, I don't know,
- 1:48Speaker 2: a wedding cake to deliver on a Thursday and then
- 1:51Speaker 2: you've got Friday, Saturday and Sunday, three days of catering
- 1:54Speaker 2: for 70 people. It can get quite overwhelming. And you're like,
- 2:00Speaker 2: why on earth would I put myself in this position?
- 2:05Speaker 2: But it is short-lived, I have to say. And, you know,
- 2:08Speaker 2: at the end of the day, I'm not doing it
- 2:12Speaker 2: because it's a particularly rewarding business. It doesn't pay that well.
- 2:21Speaker 2: My bills are paid entirely with my engineering work. Two
- 2:27Speaker 2: or three days of that already covers mortgages and bills
- 2:31Speaker 2: and everything, all the essentials. What I'm doing in the
- 2:35Speaker 2: baking business, I'm doing exclusively because I like it. There
- 2:40Speaker 2: is very little financial reward in there. So if I
- 2:46Speaker 2: didn't like it, There would be no point in me
- 2:49Speaker 2: doing it. I wouldn't be doing it. If I was
- 2:53Speaker 2: working as an engineer full time, I would be much
- 2:56Speaker 2: better off financially than I am now.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Yeah, but that's true. But I think it's admirable that
- 3:05Speaker 1: you want to make time for what you love. Because
- 3:10Speaker 1: so many people, maybe two in America, I think around,
- 3:15Speaker 1: at least around my circle here, we spend a lot
- 3:18Speaker 1: of time doing what we don't like, I think, because
- 3:21Speaker 1: we have to make money. You know, it's very important.
- 3:24Speaker 1: And I think many, many people really do have a
- 3:27Speaker 1: goal of getting more money. And so when they get
- 3:30Speaker 1: to a certain point in their career and they're making
- 3:32Speaker 1: that kind of money, they don't actually like it really.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Like if you were to ask them, do you like
- 3:37Speaker 1: your job? It's like, no, but I'd like my paycheck,
- 3:40Speaker 1: you know? So it's, I think it's a very admirable
- 3:43Speaker 1: thing to pursue and, I mean, obviously, because you're still
- 3:46Speaker 1: caring for your family and the money that you make.
- 3:49Speaker 1: But at the same time, you're like, yeah, I could
- 3:52Speaker 1: make more. But I'm passionate about something that feeds my soul.
- 3:56Speaker 1: So I would much rather split the time than just
- 3:59Speaker 1: make a lot of money. Yes.
- 4:01Speaker 2: And I think, wow.
