- 0:00Speaker 1: Jeff Legwell. Time here on a Monday afternoon, Jeff Legwall,
- 0:03Speaker 1: brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
- 0:05Speaker 1: IBW Local sixty eight. You start with a job, you
- 0:09Speaker 1: end with a career. Your number two of the bow
- 0:13Speaker 1: Nicks Sean Payton partnership critical to both of their careers.
- 0:16Speaker 1: I would say, Jeff Legwall to ESPN with us right
- 0:20Speaker 1: now and Leggy the defense dominant, the offense not so much.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Quite frankly, based on what I watched in this training camp,
- 0:31Speaker 1: that's kind of what I saw out of this team,
- 0:34Speaker 1: and certainly Andy's on the same page is that I
- 0:37Speaker 1: wasn't too terribly surprised by much of what I saw
- 0:42Speaker 1: in Week one outside of some goofy decision making made
- 0:45Speaker 1: by the Broncos, although Brian Callahan certainly won up that
- 0:49Speaker 1: numerous times in that game yesterday. But in terms of expectation,
- 0:53Speaker 1: where did that performance meet what you had for Denver?
- 0:57Speaker 2: Well, I mean, it's like you guys have said, it
- 1:01Speaker 2: was the team we saw in training camp and the preseason.
- 1:04Speaker 2: I mean, you know, if an offense with its starters
- 1:09Speaker 2: going against largely backups take six drives to score a
- 1:14Speaker 2: touchdown in the preseason. They're probably going to start the
- 1:18Speaker 2: regular season like they did now. The one advantage they
- 1:23Speaker 2: have is I think they showed yesterday that the potential
- 1:28Speaker 2: on defense is pretty immense if they can keep it
- 1:33Speaker 2: all going and everybody stays healthy and all of those things.
- 1:36Speaker 2: But I mean, that is the defense I saw in
- 1:39Speaker 2: training camp, and I'm not sure many NFL that I've
- 1:45Speaker 2: covered many NFL games where a team had five possessions
- 1:50Speaker 2: inside the other team's fifty start inside the fifty and
- 1:55Speaker 2: not get a touchdown, or have four turnovers and they
- 1:59Speaker 2: don't turn any of those into a touchdown, two field goals.
- 2:02Speaker 1: That was it on four turnovers.
- 2:04Speaker 2: I mean, that's you're not going to get that very often.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Stuff To hold any NFL team to one hundred and
- 2:12Speaker 2: thirty three yards or whatever is in this day and age,
- 2:16Speaker 2: I mean, that's those are really difficult things to do
- 2:20Speaker 2: in today's modern NFL. And I don't care who you
- 2:25Speaker 2: do it against, it's still worth noting and saying, you
- 2:30Speaker 2: know what, that was a pretty good effort.
- 2:32Speaker 3: And I think Sean Payton that.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Was kind of how his his demeanor was after the game. Uh,
- 2:39Speaker 2: you know, he's obviously going to come to the defense
- 2:41Speaker 2: of bo Nicks and the offense, because that's where he
- 2:45Speaker 2: you know, there's an awful lot of him invested there.
- 2:50Speaker 2: But even even Sean had to basically say, you know
- 2:55Speaker 2: that that was one for the defense yesterday.
- 2:58Speaker 4: Yeah, Jeff, It's interesting to me because you had kind
- 3:01Speaker 4: of given me a hint we should be ready for
- 3:04Speaker 4: waggle plays and the boot keeps and all that stuff,
- 3:07Speaker 4: and I didn't feel like they showed a ton of
- 3:10Speaker 4: it necessarily during practices.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Why were the Titans so ready for that?
- 3:14Speaker 4: It felt like all the stuff I thought would be
- 3:16Speaker 4: a surprise yesterday, the Titans were sitting in wait on that.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Do you know what happened there?
- 3:22Speaker 3: Well? I think.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Young mister Callahan has a pretty good handle on that
- 3:28Speaker 2: sort of thing, given his history here. For one, I mean,
- 3:31Speaker 2: he worked on he worked on a staff that was
- 3:34Speaker 2: very good at those plays. So I think when they
- 3:37Speaker 2: saw some of the setups and you know, and the
- 3:40Speaker 2: Broncos did it early in the game, I think they,
- 3:45Speaker 2: you know, they sort of made quick adjustments to it.
- 3:48Speaker 2: And I'm not sure the Broncos were as smooth there
- 3:52Speaker 2: as they want to be. And I think some of
- 3:55Speaker 2: that is you don't get those live reps in training
- 4:00Speaker 2: camp and as many in the preseason as he used to.
- 4:05Speaker 3: And you know, I've.
- 4:08Speaker 2: I think I what I saw, especially in the first
- 4:10Speaker 2: half from the Broncos offense, is I kind of saw
- 4:14Speaker 2: a team working through the kinks like you would normally
- 4:18Speaker 2: do in a third preseason game when all the starters
- 4:22Speaker 2: play through the half, you know.
- 4:24Speaker 3: The old way. That that's kind of what I saw
- 4:26Speaker 3: in the first half.
- 4:28Speaker 2: And it wasn't until the second half, you know, especially
- 4:32Speaker 2: for the run game, that they finally got some of
- 4:35Speaker 2: that timing that that they're gonna want moving forward.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Yeah, Leggy, who was an offensive performer yesterday for Denver,
- 4:45Speaker 1: That that stood out to you that you would look
- 4:47Speaker 1: back after that game and say, Okay, that guy. That
- 4:49Speaker 1: guy showed me something yesterday about.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Harvey did when he when he finally got decisive. I
- 4:56Speaker 2: think he had a bit of a slow wind up
- 4:59Speaker 2: in the game. And some of that is running back
- 5:01Speaker 2: is such a drum beat position. You know, the third
- 5:05Speaker 2: carry works into the fourth carry into the fifth carry,
- 5:09Speaker 2: and they just didn't commit to it at all. I
- 5:13Speaker 2: mean it's but I mean, you know, last year I
- 5:16Speaker 2: thought it was a mistake when Bo Nicks in his
- 5:20Speaker 2: first start in the opener, had twenty two pass attempts
- 5:24Speaker 2: at halftime against Seattle, and.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Then yesterday he had twenty two pass attempts at halftime.
- 5:30Speaker 2: And I just I still, you know, struggle to wrap
- 5:35Speaker 2: my head around it. I ask everybody I can ask
- 5:39Speaker 2: with the team, but that seems to be the tempo
- 5:42Speaker 2: they want with him early in games. But I thought
- 5:45Speaker 2: when the backs got more decisive because the holes were
- 5:50Speaker 2: there in the first half, even in the limited work
- 5:55Speaker 2: they did, and they just didn't make very much as
- 5:58Speaker 2: some of those plays. There were a couple where I
- 6:01Speaker 2: thought that's gonna go and then you know, it fizzled
- 6:05Speaker 2: pretty fast. But second half, I thought Dobbins and Harvey
- 6:09Speaker 2: were very decisive and it showed in the results. You know,
- 6:13Speaker 2: I think they had you know, ninety yards rushing combined
- 6:17Speaker 2: in the fourth quarter. So I think they need that
- 6:20Speaker 2: element and I think it would settle the quarterback down
- 6:23Speaker 2: a little bit too.
- 6:25Speaker 4: Jeff, how concerned should we be about some of the
- 6:28Speaker 4: injuries we know? I mean, obviously Malcolm Roach is on
- 6:30Speaker 4: the injured list there for a bit, so you won't
- 6:32Speaker 4: see him for four weeks, But what.
- 6:34Speaker 3: About any idea.
- 6:36Speaker 4: It felt like that calf string got announced a little
- 6:38Speaker 4: bit late yesterday for Evan Ingram or are there concerns there?
- 6:42Speaker 4: What do you know about green Law? Do you think
- 6:44Speaker 4: green Law? I know that they haven't had a practice ship.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Could he be any closer to coming back? And Oshan
- 6:49Speaker 4: would answer it, But what do you know about this injury?
- 6:51Speaker 4: This team that was so healthy feels a little banged
- 6:54Speaker 4: up all of a sudden.
- 6:54Speaker 1: In other words, Andy is checking the injury report powered
- 6:57Speaker 1: by Ramo's Law, the official injury law firm. Parker of
- 7:00Speaker 1: Broncos Country Jeff.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Well, I would, again, from what I'm told after making
- 7:08Speaker 2: the rounds last night a little bit. I think I
- 7:11Speaker 2: think they will be surprised if Greenlaw doesn't practice at
- 7:14Speaker 2: minimum this week. You know, maybe they get a little
- 7:18Speaker 2: more than that. But I think they're very hopeful he'll practice.
- 7:21Speaker 2: The Ingram injury I think will bear watching. Look, it's
- 7:25Speaker 2: a non scientific study, but whenever a guy throws his
- 7:30Speaker 2: helmet after he's been hurt, they know. I mean, they're
- 7:35Speaker 2: not physicians, and I get it, they haven't been to
- 7:37Speaker 2: medical school.
- 7:38Speaker 3: But when a dude throws his.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Helmet, he didn't get the report he wanted, So I
- 7:44Speaker 2: think that will bear watching moving forward.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Here.
- 7:46Speaker 1: That's some doctor Nick Riviera stuff right there. Well done
- 7:49Speaker 1: by Jeff Legwold breaking it down as only decades of
- 7:53Speaker 1: covering the NFL can leggy Nick Benito. My god, a
- 7:59Speaker 1: four pass rush win rate yesterday for Nick Benito out there.
- 8:04Speaker 1: His presence was felt instantly on the very first play
- 8:07Speaker 1: of the game and a carry by Tony Pollard, and
- 8:09Speaker 1: it did not relent for the entire game. Uh, Jeff,
- 8:14Speaker 1: is is it possible that a guy that was second
- 8:16Speaker 1: team All Pro a season ago, a guy that got
- 8:19Speaker 1: a contract extension with seventy million dollars and guaranteed north
- 8:23Speaker 1: of one hundred million dollars, is it possible that even
- 8:25Speaker 1: after all of that, this guy is somehow still underrated.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Well, I think he's underrated nationally because you know, he's
- 8:34Speaker 2: not he doesn't have a cool celebration or you know,
- 8:37Speaker 2: he's not on a podcast and he's just doing his
- 8:41Speaker 2: football thing right now. And uh, you know, I will say,
- 8:46Speaker 2: I know VJ takes a lot of heat, but you know,
- 8:49Speaker 2: in my experience of being around Vance Joseph very good
- 8:53Speaker 2: with edge rushers, very good at unlocking players with potential
- 9:00Speaker 2: and very good with secondary players because that's he came
- 9:03Speaker 2: up coaching DBS under Wade, So he's very good at
- 9:08Speaker 2: at sort of finding potential in players. You know, Hassan
- 9:12Speaker 2: Reddick until Benito Reddick was probably his greatest, you know,
- 9:18Speaker 2: from beginning to end improvement guy. But I think Benito's
- 9:21Speaker 2: gonna take that even further. And he just fits Vance's defense,
- 9:27Speaker 2: you know, perfectly. And you know, certainly he can't keep
- 9:31Speaker 2: up the pace he showed yesterday. You know that would
- 9:35Speaker 2: be unreasonable to expect. But this is an impact player
- 9:39Speaker 2: on a defense that gives you an awful lot of
- 9:42Speaker 2: bad choices in protection. I mean honestly, you know, just
- 9:47Speaker 2: objectively from a football perspective, you know, what do you do? Uh?
- 9:53Speaker 3: If you're trying to slow him down?
- 9:56Speaker 1: Mother?
- 9:56Speaker 2: You know, after I charted some of the game last
- 9:59Speaker 2: night and the rest of it this morning. But my
- 10:01Speaker 2: favorite thing I uncovered in the charting was they had
- 10:06Speaker 2: four rushes yesterday with six man pressures and they had
- 10:10Speaker 2: sacks on three of them.
- 10:12Speaker 3: Wow.
- 10:12Speaker 2: So that's that's getting it done when you bring the house.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Yeah, they've got it, man. Jeff Legwelt, everybody ESPN dot
- 10:20Speaker 1: Com go read Leggy stuff best in the biz. He's
- 10:24Speaker 1: got a great piece up on the performance of bon
- 10:26Speaker 1: Nicks in week one. He'll have much more as the
- 10:28Speaker 1: week goes along. Leggie will talk to you Friday Man.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Take care fellas.
