- 0:55Today's programs brought to you by the financial support of our listeners. And we
- 0:59are in the second week of our listener support campaign and you can support the
- 1:06show at support dot Great Detectives dot need. Throughout the year, any donation
- 1:11of seven dollars or more will receive access to our premium sign but during our
- 1:17listener support campaign, which runs through March to ninth, for any donation of
- 1:23twenty dollars or more, we will send you one of my ebooks, either
- 1:29one of my superhero comedy stories or All I Needed to Know I Learned from
- 1:33Colombo, which is a book about life lessons that can be learned from Great
- 1:37Detectives of radio, television and literature, plus one additional thank you gies.
- 1:42And among the options we have is one of the great colonial radio theater Perry
- 1:49Mason or Father Brown collections. Their Father Brown stories are very faithful to what
- 1:56GK. Chesterton wrote, and their Perry Mason adaptations are from the actual novels
- 2:01from the nineteen thirties, so they have a little bit of different flavor than
- 2:05the television series. Plus, we have other options from Colonial available, including
- 2:09King Solomon's Mine, the Martian Chronicles, or their Western series Powder River.
- 2:15And that's with a donation of twenty dollars or more. A lot of other
- 2:19options available. You can check them all out at support dot Great Detectives dot
- 2:23net. Well, now we turn to probably one of the most difficult to
- 2:29figure out serials in the series run, and that's the Cranesburg Matter. And
- 2:38there have been so many things said about this and so much confusion. There
- 2:43have been people who have stated that there was a seventh part, or that
- 2:47there's one part missing, or and basically part of this has even been caused
- 2:57by recordings that have incorrect information appended to the end when Johnny gives the teaser
- 3:06for next week's program. But I think that based on what we heard last
- 3:10week with the key, that the program would have the story start on Friday
- 3:19after the Republican convention. That really gives us that there's one part on Friday
- 3:23and then five parts the next week. And I don't think that there's any
- 3:28other way that you can come up with that. But there's actually been people
- 3:34who have advocated that there's a seventh part out there. But I've listened all
- 3:38the way through and this is complete as is so here from August twenty fourth
- 3:45and August twenty seventh is the Cranesburg Matter, Parts one and one A squad.
- 3:52It's time now for Johnny Dollar Bob Water joint writespeak. I have bombed
- 4:00been a long time, and I wish it were a longer time. Nothing
- 4:03personal in that is he no, no, just bad tamper. I'm on
- 4:05the prod. Johnny, we had a pearl necklace. Wipe. It's gotta
- 4:09be irritated. That's the same thing to anice, to the way I hear,
- 4:12yeah, but in reverse. If Aster gets irritated and he makes a
- 4:15pearl, I lose a brol. I get irritated. Right now, I'm
- 4:17irritated. Thirty eight pearls words said money, twenty thousand clams. Ever hear
- 4:23of smiley pearls smiley prow Oh sure a small town jewel thief, a couple
- 4:27of raps. I pritt him lately, though, well you're here now.
- 4:30He boned us from Ohian. Our goal says, you've got the necklace.
- 4:32Wants to talk a deal? What was your client? Girl named melbour Crane,
- 4:35a real snoopy tuty. The way I get it, owns a town
- 4:39or something, anyhouse named after her family, Greensburg, Ohio. Well,
- 4:43if I can find it on the map, I'll see about a plane reservation.
- 4:46Donny, you already got one tonight and every weekday night. Bob Bailey
- 4:57transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Pact expenscout America's Fabulous Presence Insurance investigator
- 5:03was truly Johnny Dollar. From Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to the office Tri State
- 5:21Guarantee Company, Hartford, Connecticut. The following is an accounting of expenditures during
- 5:26my investigation of the Cranesburg matter. Item one one hundred and five dollars and
- 5:32thirty five cents incinnetals in Hartford and transportation to Cranesburg, Ohio. I checked
- 5:38into the hotel the Crane Hotel, incidentally, and for instructions waited for contact
- 5:42by one Swanley prel jewel thief. That Crane name was beginning to run out
- 5:46of my ears. So for the moment at least, I postponed coming on
- 5:49the family itself. As it happened, though, the family came to me,
- 5:54or at any rate, one of them did come in. My name
- 5:59is mister oh sure, sure, come on in, mister Crane. Thank
- 6:05you, sir. You related to miss Melbury Crane. Melbury is my niece,
- 6:11and the necklace belong to her. That is correct. It was her
- 6:14own personal property, not a part of any family holding. Oh I see,
- 6:18I want you, miss Cream. Oh thank you. Just two constitutes
- 6:24the family you mentioned. Well, as a matter of fact, mister Dolla,
- 6:27only Melburn myself now were the last remaining survivors. Oh now, I
- 6:32see you unpacking, said, but you just go right ahead and forgive my
- 6:35entrusion. Well, yeah, did catch me a little by spride. I
- 6:40just got in town a few minutes ago, and I wasn't expecting mister Lauder.
- 6:44The insurance company bid that you were coming, and I was waiting here
- 6:46at the hotel. I understand the thief has approached you. Well, no,
- 6:51not personally. No, He followed the main office in Hartford and talked
- 6:56to lawder See I'll probably hear from him sometimes said now you say, he
- 7:01mister, are you certain the call was from a man? Lotter was certain?
- 7:08Do you have some reason to data? Not at all. I just
- 7:14wonder. The name he gave is a known jewel thief, several previous convictions,
- 7:17Smiley pro and the call was made from here in Cranesburg. Yeah,
- 7:24that's right. Well that's very remarkable. Why so, but this is quite
- 7:28a small town, as you've doubt noticed. Now a strange you would draw
- 7:31attention, be somewhat conspicuous. Oh not necessarily. Smiley may have come here
- 7:36some time ago to establish himself. You may even have met him, mister
- 7:40Greg. Oh no, I'm quite sure that. I was utterly impossible.
- 7:45Did are you a description? No, of course not. And how can
- 7:48you be so sure? Well? I just have met any strangers in the
- 7:53last few months, not a what I see. Well, I am now
- 7:58at home. Can I can I order have something from the bar? Mister
- 8:01cran Oh no, no, no, thank you, No, I really
- 8:03have to run on. I only stopped in for a minute. Did you
- 8:07have anything special in mind? Oh no, no, no, nothing at
- 8:11all, I don't believe you, mister Crane. I beg your pardon.
- 8:16Well, I just don't believe you care for cigarette. Oh no, no,
- 8:20I never spoke to and I must say I failed to understand your implication.
- 8:26You understand it all right? I want is there something funny about the
- 8:31loss of that necklace? Certainly? And what's up? I merely came here
- 8:35to offer my help and Melbourne two. Of course, I wanted you to
- 8:39know that we will be glad to cooperate fully in any action you may choose
- 8:43to take. That's very generous of you and your niece. My names Well,
- 8:50she's a very remarkable girl. Melboy all. Yeah, she's a try
- 8:54her head strong times course, and not always inclined to use the best judgement.
- 9:00Ah how has she shown this lack of judgment? Mister Crane? Oh,
- 9:03there is nothing specific, But I did want you. I did want
- 9:09to see you before you talk to her and let you know kind of what
- 9:13to expect. As you might say, Oh, naturally, she's very upset
- 9:16over the loss of her neck. I imagine you don't have any hope I
- 9:20suppose of recovery. Well, as a matter of fact, I have a
- 9:24lot of hope of recovering it, possibly within twenty four hours. Oh well,
- 9:30noble to be very happy to hear that it was an engagement, give
- 9:33to understand, and from her fiance, Dean Sellers his name. Oh,
- 9:37she was quite broken up when it was stolen ab a twenty thousand dollars necklace.
- 9:41It's a pretty fair loss, now, mister Crane. Oh, it's
- 9:43not the intrinsic value as all, mister No, I supposed not, since
- 9:48that part of it is covered by the insurance. Yeah. Oh that's that
- 9:52ours referring to the sentimental attachment she understands all naturally, and of course to
- 9:56the sheer beauty. Oh it was lovely. Okay, you've seen the necklace
- 10:01and suppose no, but I've got photographs of it. Oh yes, of
- 10:03court, yes, from the insurance company. That's quite an unusual ornament,
- 10:07with each pearl set individually in a platinum money. The whole thing is a
- 10:11part Johnny Dollen this You know who mister dollars are to talk? Yeah,
- 10:18go ahead, shoot all right, you know where the Green Lion bar is,
- 10:22I'll find it. We'll meet me there then in an hour and a
- 10:24half check and I won't have it on my dollars, So don't go some
- 10:28money pants on me or you'll be holding the sack you. I just want
- 10:33you and me to understand, no cops, huh. I've been in this
- 10:35game a long time. Yeah. Yeah, that's what I'm counting on.
- 10:37I'll see you later. That was the soy sense. Well, I've got
- 10:46to run alone now. If there's anything I can do. Well, you
- 10:50got finished what you were saying about your niece, if you will. Oh
- 10:52no, no, there was nothing, really, It's just that Melb is
- 10:56a bit too uh imp the times headstrong. You know, she's young,
- 11:03she's foolish, but she never means any actual harm by it. I no,
- 11:09not really now, I'm sure you won't stand that, mister Doller a
- 11:13good day. Sent it them two twenty six dollars even to put it in
- 11:22first days rattle. On a higher car, I checked on the location of
- 11:26the Green Lion fifteen minutes in the center of town, so there was plenty
- 11:30of time to follow up another angle before I went to meet Swanny Prowl.
- 11:33I parked the car in front of the Cranesburg Bank, went inside and presented
- 11:35microdentials in the letter of introduction to Milton Berkley President, step inside the off
- 11:41with mister Donald. We have a little privacy at least, Thanks mister Parkning,
- 11:46I have a sheet nice. Any any recommendation that Bob Waters is good
- 11:52enough for me? He handled a lot of investments for Tri State. You
- 11:56find company, nice company to work for him? Now, what can I
- 11:58do for you, mister d Oh? It's just the usual routine shack in
- 12:03cases of this kind. The general financial status of the Crane bunch you mean
- 12:07the Crane Chemical company or the Crane family. Well, I assumed the two
- 12:11went together. No, no, not for several years now. Melbourne's father
- 12:13sold the last of the family stock a while before his death. Neither Phineas
- 12:18nor Melba have one stent of ownership in the company. I see now.
- 12:22The company, of course, is an excellent financial gets the family we're concerned
- 12:26with, Well, there, the picture is a little different. The fact
- 12:28is that although they're the social leapers of the town and everybody pictures they're rolling
- 12:33in it, the cranes are broke, flat broke, have been for a
- 12:35couple of years now. But as I understand that they live at quite a
- 12:39fancy of state out on the edge of time. Sure, and it's mortgage.
- 12:41Did they help? It's very interesting. Of course, lately old Phineas
- 12:46seems to be going around with a pocket full of money. I don't know
- 12:50where he got it. It is a funny thing, how lately, since
- 12:54the necklace was starne before, oh long before two or three months for the
- 12:58robbery, was only left great supposed a least. No, I see what
- 13:03you mean, but it's not the answer. Melville wore those pearls of the
- 13:05country club dance just a few days before they were taking Well, it was
- 13:09an idea. I'll give you a piece of advice, mister Dollar, have
- 13:13more than just an idea before you get too rough with malbur Crane or her
- 13:18uncle. Oh if money or no money, they're still top society here.
- 13:22The local aristocrats and the town kindly takee care resultantly. Well, as I
- 13:26said, this is a routine. I don't have the slightest bit of evidence
- 13:30that the trains are trying to pull on a short swindle. But I get
- 13:33paid to be suspicious, that's all. Well, I wondered, I spoke
- 13:37where Phineas was getting the money? Any ideas about him? No, unless
- 13:41he's been borrowing from his perspective. Son in law Dean Cellars, the land
- 13:45who gave hus Crane the pearls. Yeah, how is he fixed financially?
- 13:48A man who can afford a twenty thousand dollars engagement gift. Yeah, we
- 13:54can assume he's eating regularly. I suppose. Well. Actually, I don't
- 13:58know too much about him. He's an out of town here about eight months
- 14:00ago. He doesn't bank with me, I say, but I will tell
- 14:03you one thing. If he doesn't have money now, he's certainly will had
- 14:07before long. Oh he's a go get her that boy. He must be
- 14:11here eight months and engage to the town bell. Oh, he's a whirlwind,
- 14:15keeps such a eight project going all at once, for instance, real
- 14:18estate, business promotions, one thing and another. So busy he even had
- 14:22to postpone the wedding they were supposed to get hits three weeks ago. Of
- 14:26course, I hear that it may be due to well two to one,
- 14:31mister Dowler. This whole thing is odd enough, just on the basis of
- 14:35facts the rumors, I think we'll skip. I'm sure you understand. That
- 14:48was the second time I was supposed to quote understand unquote Pheneast train was sure
- 14:54I could understand about his niece, and banker Milton Berkley was equally certain about
- 14:58the rumors. As a matter of fact, I understood less about the whole
- 15:01thing, and I did when I first got in town. I wasn't getting
- 15:05anywhere. I was losing ground. I had them three a dollar forty two
- 15:09dry martinis in the Green Lion bar when I waited for Smiley pro. He
- 15:13was twenty minutes late, but he finally showed up, slipped into the back
- 15:16booth across from you. Are your dollar right? Have a drink? No
- 15:22summer time. I only got about one minute, all right? What's your
- 15:24price? No price? Nothing? Now? Oh, look smarting a minute.
- 15:28It's not long enough to too much bargaining. I didn't come here to
- 15:30bargain. Well I did, And we assume from the way you talked on
- 15:33the phone to Hartford you felt the same way. Just keep your shirt on,
- 15:35chumping. Well, we'll make a deal, all right, but later,
- 15:39not right now? Why not? Because sums come up? I gotta
- 15:41get it straightened out. What never mind? Look you remember this address and
- 15:48fourteen twelve North Oak Street, Room six, boarding house. Are you you
- 15:52meet me there at nine o'clock tonight. Oh a matute, what's this all
- 15:56about? I haven't got time, chump. Don't you get your beads back
- 16:00one way or another? What do you mean? I mean that somebody's trying
- 16:02to hand old smile a real quick shuffle, first class double cross. And
- 16:07I'm going to see too that somebody gets it right in the neck. Who's
- 16:11the somebody? You Just sit tight and meet me at nine o'clock, and
- 16:15I think I'll be in a position to give you a lot more than just
- 16:18the necklace. You understand, frankly, No, you will. You're going
- 16:22to understand real good before you're through. So stick around, dollar Johnny.
- 16:48Yeah, apparently. Now who did you say you and your work for?
- 16:52Mister Barton? I mean I am mister, I mean miss Barb. You're
- 16:57confused? He JD Barton Town is me? I'm here? Never heard?
- 17:03Now you see what you've done. I'll never forgive myself anyway. I'm the
- 17:07try state guarantee agent here in Crainsburg, and this seems the least you could
- 17:10have done was to look me up. We'll give me time. I just
- 17:11got in town. You had time to rush out there that south side bar
- 17:15and started lushing it up. I came out here at this joined to talk
- 17:18to what jewel see you want? Julesy. It's the guy who phoned Hardford
- 17:22and offered to make a deal on the Crane necklace. He claims he's one
- 17:25who stole it. That for a slight consideration, I can get it back.
- 17:27And what do you think I think I've walked in on the nuttiest case
- 17:30in the month of space. Hey, look, he's waiting for me at
- 17:33the bar. Suppose I ain't dropped by later? And are you sure j
- 17:37D. Bartlett is a woman. You're the first man who ever doubted it.
- 17:41I'll see you later, mister Dollar. From Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to
- 17:52the home office Tri State Guarantee Company, Hartford, Connecticut. The following is
- 17:56an accounting of expenditures during my investigation of the Cranesburg matter. Expense account continued
- 18:02when I told her the case was nutty I met it. The start of
- 18:14it had been fairly ordinary. A pearl necklace in short for twenty thousand dollars
- 18:17had been stolen from a wall save in the home of its owner, local
- 18:19socialite Melva Crane Swiny prel An no small time juwelthy but fondus aiming to have
- 18:26a necklace, and Smiley offered to talk a deal. But before I'd been
- 18:30in town ten minutes, things began to crumble and change shape. Melville's featherheaded
- 18:34uncle Phineas had called my hotel to warm me that his niece was headstrong and
- 18:37impulsive, or at least he said that was why he called. When I
- 18:41tagged the rumor that the aristocratic cranes were flat broke until recently. And now
- 18:48at the Green Lion Inn, Swiny Prell, a burglar by admission, was
- 18:52turning skittish and climbing up. Look, Dollar, I got no time to
- 18:59talk now, all relaxed with your smiley. A man and your profession can't
- 19:03afford to develop a case of nerve. Oh very funny, But I gotta
- 19:04blow this joint now. I told you before you went to get that phone
- 19:08call, I got things to do. Yeah, I know what you're talking,
- 19:11all right? Then, now you meet me later at that place and
- 19:14time. I told you you try pushing me, you're never going to get
- 19:18them beads? Do you ever think of that? I don't know who I
- 19:21am anyway, I told you, and an hour before on the phone,
- 19:23you told me to meet you here. We talk a deal, all right,
- 19:26and so we will. We'll talk later. What's the matter with you?
- 19:29How many times I gotta tell you something's come up and I gotta get
- 19:33it straightened out? Like what for instance? Well, never mind, it's
- 19:36learning your business, it's it's like personal. So later you said you were
- 19:41being handed a double cross. Now what kind of a double That's exactly what
- 19:45I'm trying to figure out. Who did it? Who crossed you? Never
- 19:48mind who crossed me? It's your business. Did you have a partner on
- 19:52this job? Oh, look, don't try to kid meet you. Check
- 19:55my m O before you ever left Hartford. If you did, then you
- 19:57will. You know I always worked a lot. Well, there canna be
- 20:00a first time or anything. No, I got note, you have somebody
- 20:03on the inside smiling, somebody in the crane house who tipped you off,
- 20:07briefed you. Yeah, you want to know too much? Is that where
- 20:11the double cross came from? I got nothing more to say more. You
- 20:14haven't said anything. Well, you meet me tonight where I said two dollars
- 20:18at nine? You know something? Smiling? I don't think you've got it?
- 20:22What are you talking about the necklace. I don't think you had anything
- 20:25to do with the robbery. I don't believe you've got it, or that
- 20:27you've ever even seen it. You don't know, no, no, I
- 20:32think you're trying to pull a con of some kind, but it's not gonna
- 20:34work a dollar. You know what the things look like? Yeah? I
- 20:37got photographs of them? All right? Then check me out. There are
- 20:41thirty eight pearls. Yeah, and they're pink match color match sides, and
- 20:48they're not piers like they usually are. Each one said in a fitted platinum
- 20:52mount and the mounts are fastened together with those you know, those little links.
- 20:57What kind of a stone in the class? Class? Right? And
- 21:00he's stolen the cook? Hey, what are you trying to do? Okay,
- 21:03okay, all right, you've got it, or at least you've seen
- 21:07it. So how much do you want? Meet me tonight at nine o'clock
- 21:11and I'll tell you fourteen twelve North Oak Street, Room six, and no
- 21:15copy not if you want them beats back. You understand not anymore than I
- 21:18did when I walked to me, but you will, so just keep your
- 21:22shirt up, smiley. If you can talk tonight, you can talk now.
- 21:23There's no reason to down now. Look, I got things to do
- 21:26and not much time to do them in So go find yourself a cool pad
- 21:30somewhere and simmer down. Huh so long Don had them four to seventy five.
- 21:44I was stuck with the check, naturally, so I paid it and
- 21:47strolled toward the door. I stopped just outside and the entrance way to the
- 21:51roadhouse and watch smile across the parking lot toward a treciated taxi stand, where
- 21:55a couple of waiting hanks at parked out of the sun. A few yards
- 21:57away from me stood another care this one occupied. I stepped out of the
- 22:02entrance and walked over to the taxi because I'd recognized the passenger in the back
- 22:06seat. Afternoon, missus Crane. I'm sorry if I started. Oh oh,
- 22:14not at all. I just didn't hear you walk up. Yeah,
- 22:18I know this. You seem pretty concerned with something across the lots. It
- 22:22wouldn't be that getting into the taxi, wouldn't what, fellow, I don't
- 22:26know what you mean, mister. Oh, I could be wrong. I
- 22:30hadn't even noticed the man as a matter of fact. Oh well, then
- 22:33of course you won't mind if we just stand here and watch him drive off.
- 22:36I really should get back into town. Good. I'm going that way
- 22:38myself. I've got a car here. Be glad to you, but I've
- 22:41already engaged them off. We'll get going. Give us a chance to talk
- 22:45on the way in. But you might as well, mister Crane. The
- 22:48other taxi is already out of sight. I hadn't noticed very well hear you
- 22:55driving. Keep the chin eyes over this way. Gay. There may be
- 23:04a misunderstanding of some sort, mister. You seemed to end of the misapp
- 23:10pension that I was interested for some reason in that stranger who left. I
- 23:15said, I could be wrong, and I can assure you that you are.
- 23:18Here's the card. For the best of my knowledge. I have never
- 23:27seen the man before in my life. Well, there'll be days like that
- 23:32sometimes, a colloquialism of the common man. Mister. What's what were you
- 23:45doing out at the Green Lion by the way, Well, I was just
- 23:48killing time, were you? As a matter of fact, so I was
- 23:52waiting to talk with you. I was afraid I may have left the wrong
- 23:56impression when I talked with you at your hotel earlier today in what Wiams.
- 24:02But I mean about my niece Melmo. Well, you said she was headstrong,
- 24:07impulsible, but not a bit more so than any other normal, average
- 24:12girls that I see. I don't really know why I considered it's so important
- 24:18at the time. Yeah, well, that's understandable. You don't have a
- 24:22jewel robbery in the family every day, if you in the family, I
- 24:26mean stolen from the family. Apparently we're both getting wrong and pressure. Yes,
- 24:30I did say that, Cineras. I'm glad that everything is cleared up
- 24:34now I wish it were. Nothing has been cleared up yet as far as
- 24:38I can see, the necklace is still missing. But of course that isn't
- 24:42what I mean. It's what I mean. It's the only reason I'm here
- 24:45in Cranesburg to recover that necklace, one way or another. What do you
- 24:48mean by one way or another? Either by tagging the thief and getting it
- 24:52back through police action, or if necessary, by making a deal. Just
- 24:56talk to the man who claims to be in possession of the pearls, as
- 25:00you know, of course, but he was why they your parts here?
- 25:02But I do not know, of course. Well, and let's say may
- 25:06have guessed you were in my hotel room when he phoned. You heard me
- 25:08arrange to meet him. I didn't really pay much attention to that phone call,
- 25:11all right. Anyway, when I flew in here from Hartford, I
- 25:15expected this to be a cut and dry matter of routine. I'd meet Prel,
- 25:18make a quick deal to get the pearls back, and catch the next
- 25:21plane out. Only it's apparently not going to be that way. What do
- 25:26you mean? I mean, I've stumbled onto a whole nest full of question
- 25:29marks, and nothing seems to add up quite right. Prel. For one
- 25:32thing, I think he's got himself into a spot of some kind. Is
- 25:34that it you? It doesn't make sense? And what else, mister doll?
- 25:38Little things rumors I've picked up around town, hints, and of course
- 25:44the biggest question mark seems to be right close to home. Which one is
- 25:48that you, mister Crane. When I dropped him off of the center of
- 26:00town, he was still fumbling with vague phrases, trying to clear up the
- 26:03misapprehensions, as he put it, but actually saying nothing. He was sure,
- 26:08however, that I would understand he was wrong. I didn't even my
- 26:14mistake about J D. Bartlett, tri State's local agents seemed to fit in
- 26:17with the rest of them, mixed up case. I'd assume from the name
- 26:21that Bartley was a man. But when I walked into the office a few
- 26:23months later, I was suddenly happy that I was wrong. Your dollar,
- 26:32I presume that's right, miss Bartley. Just make a JD. I spent
- 26:37a lot of time and effort getting those initials pounded into the skulls the local
- 26:41inhabitants. Why it's good for business? Makes me one of the boys,
- 26:44you might say, I kind of doubt it somehow, As you mentioned on
- 26:48the phone, you were unmistakable for that. I'm going to drop the dollar
- 26:53and call you Johnny Chair. Yeah, thanks, JD. Can you get
- 26:59anywhere that character that snatched the queen's rocks? Oh? He stalled, postponed
- 27:04the whole deal until nine o'clock to night. Why Uh, he was nervous.
- 27:07I guess well, that's about the the reason I can figure between him
- 27:11and old Phineas Crane. I'm getting a little nervous myself. How did Phineas
- 27:15get into the act? Good question? I wish I had a good answer.
- 27:18What about these cranes, j D? What makes them tick beats me.
- 27:22Well, you sold them the insurance policy. You must know something about
- 27:26that. I didn't sell the policy. I just permitted it to be bought
- 27:30from me. So Melva Crane came snooping into the office one day, dropped
- 27:34the pearls under my plebeian nose and wanted them insured. Why do you dislike
- 27:38her? She's a good looking dame and I'm pretty well favored myself, And
- 27:42answer your question roughly yes, So what happened? So I got Jim Markley,
- 27:48local jeweler in here to appraise, and issued the policy. And that
- 27:52was that. I understand that the necklace was an engagement gift from some newcomer
- 27:56in town. Yeah, Dean Sellers. She had him hooked for even got
- 28:00his eggs unpacked. That's scared as the ethics of a Boa constrictor and about
- 28:04as much personality as a face painted on an egg. Somehow, I don't
- 28:08feel I'm getting an unbiased opinion. You won't at this address. Why can't
- 28:12she climb down off her petestal and play ball with the rest of us?
- 28:17The Crane name, the Crane tradition, the Crane social position. The only
- 28:19thing they're not so high and mighty about the Crane bank account because there isn't
- 28:23one except lately. As I understand that old Phineas is fishing money around pretty
- 28:29freely the last few months, so I've heard. Don't ask me to explain
- 28:32it. I can't even explain Phineas. What do you mean? He's a
- 28:36rare one, that old boy, old school time. I'll fomage that sort
- 28:40of thing. But you know, as a matter of protecting the family name,
- 28:45I actually think he'd commit murdered. Now here's our star to tell you
- 29:04about tomorrow's episode of this week's story. Tomorrow when somebody kisses the wrong somebody

- 30:33You might have had some confusion about the part one and one a thing
- 30:37at the start of the show. That's how it was designated. The part
- 30:41that appeared on Friday that was part one, and then what started on Monday
- 30:48that was Part one A which I guess is another thing that adds confusion to
- 30:52the serial. And I kind of went back and forth on how I should
- 30:56number this, but I decided just to stick with the way that they did
- 31:00it originally. I think that makes the most sense. Obviously, a lot
- 31:03has happened already in this series that is quite suggestive of something being hidden,
- 31:11and this is kind of a recurring theme. But we'll see how this unfolds.
