- 0:10Hello friends, Sean here. Great to have your company on
- 0:14today, the Wednesday the middle of the week.
- 0:18It is the 27th of December and I'm so grateful that you have
- 0:24found some time in today, which is probably a rather unusual
- 0:29Wednesday that probably doesn't fit into the normal Wednesday
- 0:32mold for you as you may well be enjoying a little bit of well
- 0:37earned R&R. Today we continue hearing the
- 0:40story of Hannah and her prayer of rejoicing that God finally
- 0:47heard her prayer. And then and then it will turn
- 0:51to the wicked family of the priest Eli.
- 0:54So join me as we read together the beginnings of this wonderful
- 0:58story in First Samuel Chapter 2. Then Hannah prayed.
- 1:15My heart rejoices in the Lord. The Lord has made me strong.
- 1:21Now I have an answer for my enemies.
- 1:23I rejoice because you rescued me.
- 1:26No one is wholly like the Lord. There is no one besides you.
- 1:32There is no rock like our God. Stop acting so proud and
- 1:36haughty. Don't speak with such arrogance,
- 1:40for the Lord is a God who knows what you have done.
- 1:44He will judge your actions. The bow of the mighty is now
- 1:48broken, and those who stumbled are now strong.
- 1:53Those who were well fed are now starving, and those who were
- 1:57starving are now full. The childless woman now has
- 2:02seven children, and the woman with many children wastes away.
- 2:07The Lord gives both death and life.
- 2:11He brings some down to the grave, but raises others up.
- 2:15The Lord makes some poor and others rich.
- 2:18He brings some down and lifts others up.
- 2:22He lifts the poor from the dust and the needy from the garbage
- 2:26dump. He sets them among Princess,
- 2:28placing them in seats of honor for all.
- 2:31The earth is the Lord's, and he has set the world in order.
- 2:36He will protect his faithful ones.
- 2:39But the wicked will disappear in darkness.
- 2:43No one will succeed by strength alone.
- 2:46Those who fight against the Lord will be shattered.
- 2:50He thunders against them from heaven.
- 2:52The Lord judges throughout the earth.
- 2:55He gives power to his king. He increases the strength of his
- 2:59anointed one. Then Elkanah returned home to
- 3:04Rama without Samuel, and the boys served the Lord by
- 3:09assisting Eli the priest. Now the sons of Eli were
- 3:13scoundrels who had no respect for the Lord or for their duties
- 3:18as priests. Whenever anyone offered a
- 3:20sacrifice, Eli's sons would send over a servant with A3 pronged
- 3:25fork. While the meat of the sacrificed
- 3:28animal was still boiling, the servant would stick the fork
- 3:31into the pot and demand that whatever it brought up be given
- 3:35to Eli's sons. All the Israelites who came to
- 3:39worship at Shiloh were treated this way.
- 3:41Sometimes the servant would come even before the animal's fat had
- 3:45been burned on the altar. He would demand raw meat before
- 3:49it had been boiled, so that it could be used for roasting.
- 3:53The man offering the sacrifice might reply, take as much as you
- 3:56want, but the fat must be burned first.
- 4:00Then the servant would demand no give it to me now, or I'll take
- 4:04it by force. So the sin of these young men
- 4:07was very serious in the Lord's sight, for they treated the
- 4:11Lord's offerings with contempt. But Samuel, though he was only a
- 4:16boy, served the Lord. He wore a linen garment like
- 4:21that of a priest. Each year his mother made a
- 4:24small coat for him and brought it to him when she came with her
- 4:27husband for the sacrifice. Before they returned home, Eli
- 4:31would bless Elkanah and his wife and say, May the Lord give you
- 4:37other children to take the place of this son she gave to the
- 4:40Lord. And the Lord blessed Hannah, and
- 4:44she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters.
- 4:49Meanwhile, Samuel grew up in the presence of the Lord.
- 4:53Now Eli was very old, but he was aware of what his sons were
- 4:58doing to the people of Israel. He knew, for instance, that his
- 5:01sons were seducing the young women who assisted at the
- 5:04entrance of the Tabernacle, Eli said to them.
- 5:08I have been hearing reports from all the people about the wicked
- 5:12things you are doing. Why do you keep sinning?
- 5:16You must stop my sons. The reports I hear among the
- 5:20Lord's people are not good. If someone sins against another
- 5:25person, God can mediate for the guilty party.
- 5:29But if someone sins against the Lord, who can intercede?
- 5:34But Eli's sons wouldn't listen to their father, for the Lord
- 5:37was already planning to put them to death.
- 5:40Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew taller and grew in favor with
- 5:45the Lord and with the people. One day a man from God came to
- 5:50Eli and gave him this message from the Lord.
- 5:54I revealed myself to your ancestors when they were
- 5:57Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt. I chose your ancestor Aaron,
- 6:02from among all the tribes of Israel, to be my priest, to
- 6:06offer sacrifices on my altar, to burn incense, and to wear the
- 6:10priestly vest as he served me and I assigned the sacrificial
- 6:15offerings to your priests. So why do you scorn my
- 6:19sacrifices and offerings? Why do you give your sons more
- 6:23honor than you give me for you? And they have become fat from
- 6:28the best offerings of my people. Israel, therefore, the Lord, the
- 6:33God of Israel, says, I promised that your branch of the tribe of
- 6:38Levi would always be my priests. But I will honor those who honor
- 6:43me, and I will despise those who think lightly of me.
- 6:48The time is coming when I will put an end to your family so it
- 6:52will no longer serve as my priests.
- 6:55All the members of your family will die before their time.
- 6:58None will reach old age. You will watch with envy as I
- 7:03pour out prosperity on the people of Israel.
- 7:06But no members of your family will ever live out their days.
- 7:11The few not cut off from serving at my altar will survive, but
- 7:16only so their eyes can go blind and their hearts break and their
- 7:20children will die of violent death.
- 7:23And to prove that what I have said will come true, I will
- 7:27cause your two sons, Hofny and Phineas, to die on the same day.
- 7:34Then I will raise up a faithful priest who will serve me and do
- 7:39what I desire. I will establish his family, and
- 7:43they will be priests to my anointed kings forever.
- 7:47Then all of your surviving family will bow before him,
- 7:51begging for money and food. Please, they will say, give U.S.
- 7:55jobs among the priests, so we will have enough to eat.
- 8:08Jesus, give us rest. Give us rest as we rest in you
- 8:15during this time of the year, as all things draw to a close, may
- 8:20we find ourselves resting in the palm of your hand, covered by
- 8:27your grace and your provision. Thank you that you love us and
- 8:33that your story of engagement and revelation with people
- 8:38stretches back so many thousands of years.
- 8:42As we have the privilege of hearing this part of your story,
- 8:47you establishing what your kingship looks like.
- 8:52Bless us as we read these chapters.
- 8:55Reveal yourself to us so that we can know you and love you more
- 8:59fully.
