Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Richard Sherman Podcast.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Today we have an incredible guest, Brandon s Say, a sumter,
- 0:13Speaker 2: South Carolina native who played at Lakewood High School and
- 0:16Speaker 2: spent two seasons at NC State before coming to South Carolina,
- 0:20Speaker 2: where he posted twenty seven tackles, five past breakups and
- 0:23Speaker 2: interception in twenty twenty five.
- 0:25Speaker 1: You're one of the.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Fastest rising names in this draft class, a guy who's
- 0:29Speaker 2: built a real name for himself through hard work, production,
- 0:32Speaker 2: and toughness. So we've got to get into your journey,
- 0:36Speaker 2: your game, and what's next for you.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Welcome to that show, brother, I appreciate you having your
- 0:41Speaker 3: own Yeah, no.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Problem, it's it's my pleasure.
- 0:43Speaker 2: I want to I want to talk ball, I want
- 0:45Speaker 2: to talk personal, I want to talk everything you want
- 0:48Speaker 2: to talk about. But at at what point during your
- 0:55Speaker 2: your career you know, I mean, you went from n
- 0:57Speaker 2: C State to South Carolina, which is which is something
- 1:00Speaker 2: we got to talk about in the first place, because
- 1:03Speaker 2: that seems like, you know, a little crazy, But I
- 1:05Speaker 2: went from the Seahawks and the Niners, so you know,
- 1:10Speaker 2: you know, I know a thing or two about that.
- 1:12Speaker 2: But at one point did you know that you had
- 1:15Speaker 2: the potential to be an NFL corner.
- 1:17Speaker 3: I would say probably software here, sophomore here.
- 1:20Speaker 4: That's when it clicked for me.
- 1:22Speaker 2: At what moment was it a game, was it a practice?
- 1:25Speaker 2: Was it just a moment in time a month?
- 1:28Speaker 4: I would say probably just the first month of the season.
- 1:30Speaker 4: It just felt super easy. It just felt like I
- 1:33Speaker 4: was just playing at a faster pacing. Everybody else knew
- 1:36Speaker 4: what was coming, so anticipating.
- 1:38Speaker 2: What do you think is the I guess the best
- 1:41Speaker 2: part of your game? Is it your press? Is it
- 1:44Speaker 2: your man?
- 1:44Speaker 4: The man?
- 1:45Speaker 1: Is your instincts, your your ball skills? What is it
- 1:49Speaker 1: that sets you apart?
- 1:51Speaker 3: I think it's the athleticism combined with the versatility and
- 1:54Speaker 3: the IQ.
- 1:54Speaker 4: I think that's the three things. I would say separate
- 1:57Speaker 4: me because you can move me around, you can play
- 1:58Speaker 4: the inside outside. But I can tell you everybody's doing
- 2:01Speaker 4: it all time, so it makes it easy.
- 2:04Speaker 1: You be careful. They throw you at safety. You know.
- 2:09Speaker 2: RT in a heartbeat, and you know they got Nick
- 2:12Speaker 2: playing everywhere in the league.
- 2:13Speaker 1: They said South Carolina.
- 2:15Speaker 4: Got Carolina freakish. Yep, Let's go ahead and put him
- 2:17Speaker 4: every well.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Go ahead, put him somewhere.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Any smart be careful, be careful. Who taught you to
- 2:27Speaker 2: play corner?
- 2:28Speaker 4: Oh?
- 2:29Speaker 3: Snap man? My high school coach. Honestly, ninth grade.
- 2:32Speaker 4: He just threw me at a corner because I was
- 2:33Speaker 4: a receiver before that, Like even in high school, I
- 2:36Speaker 4: was just a big time receiver.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Like I didn't really think I was gonna be a
- 2:38Speaker 3: corner in college.
- 2:39Speaker 4: And when I got it, he stayed. I just threw
- 2:41Speaker 4: me in the corner room. So it's just really a
- 2:44Speaker 4: high school in ninth grade.
- 2:46Speaker 2: So what was that conversation? Like it was like, okay,
- 2:48Speaker 2: so receiver or corner, and it was like corner. He
- 2:51Speaker 2: was like, so not receiver.
- 2:53Speaker 4: So my mom, I went to the camp and I
- 2:55Speaker 4: just performed that corner. But like all my highlights on
- 2:57Speaker 4: receiver highlights.
- 2:58Speaker 3: So I was like, man, maybe they gonna let me
- 3:00Speaker 3: play receiver.
- 3:02Speaker 4: No, I got that corner.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Know both ways here you're playing corner.
- 3:09Speaker 1: You didn't you didn't even ask.
- 3:11Speaker 4: You didn't even ask when I got there. Man through
- 3:12Speaker 4: me right in that corner.
- 3:13Speaker 1: I asked, no question.
- 3:15Speaker 2: That's tough. That's tough. But you a for a corner.
- 3:20Speaker 2: One thing I respect about you. You throw your nose in there.
- 3:22Speaker 2: You you getting involved in a run game. What goes
- 3:25Speaker 2: into that mindset because obviously you know some people are
- 3:28Speaker 2: tall at corner.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Hey, that's not my job.
- 3:29Speaker 4: But for you, for me, hey, we getting part, we
- 3:33Speaker 4: getting involved exactly. I think it's just a mentality thing.
- 3:36Speaker 4: It's like a dog mindset. You know, I play on
- 3:38Speaker 4: the edge on me, you know, something like I was
- 3:40Speaker 4: under recruited, stuff like that. So it's just like, hey,
- 3:42Speaker 4: and I feel like it's a tone setter. It's a
- 3:44Speaker 4: tone setter. When you see the corners tackling a lot
- 3:46Speaker 4: of teams, they don't like corners to tackle. They want
- 3:48Speaker 4: to put them in the fit. So I feel like
- 3:50Speaker 4: if you put me in the fit and make you sure,
- 3:51Speaker 4: you like, hey, that's the kind of mindset I've gotten
- 3:53Speaker 4: just that kind of person. So and then I like,
- 3:55Speaker 4: I don't want to be known as a covered corner,
- 3:57Speaker 4: Like I'm a complete guy. So that's how I like them.
- 3:59Speaker 1: G I love it. I love it.
- 4:01Speaker 4: What.
- 4:02Speaker 1: So let's get into it.
- 4:03Speaker 2: What went into the decision to transfer from NC State
- 4:07Speaker 2: to South Carolina.
- 4:09Speaker 4: So the defensive coordinator, Tony Gibson, he was like he
- 4:13Speaker 4: was gonna take the Marshall head coaching job. So he
- 4:15Speaker 4: took the martial head coaching job and took the whole
- 4:17Speaker 4: support staff, like the gas and everybody with them. So
- 4:20Speaker 4: it was like, dang, they full time coaches now me
- 4:23Speaker 4: B and B. I couldn't go down and level and
- 4:25Speaker 4: go to Marshall with them like that just when you
- 4:28Speaker 4: do that and you do that.
- 4:29Speaker 3: So it was kind of like, okay, Like I sat
- 4:31Speaker 3: down thought about it.
- 4:32Speaker 4: I was like, man, like, what's the difference between playing
- 4:35Speaker 4: for a whole new defensive staff. If I'm gonna have
- 4:37Speaker 4: a whole new defensive staff anyway, and why not do
- 4:40Speaker 4: it in the best conference in America, which I believe
- 4:42Speaker 4: was SEC. So then coach Clay had right. He called me.
- 4:45Speaker 4: He was like, hey, man, like, you want to come
- 4:47Speaker 4: back home?
- 4:47Speaker 3: And I was like, yeah, I ain't recruit me out
- 4:49Speaker 3: of high school.
- 4:50Speaker 4: But then.
- 4:54Speaker 3: You over there bluffing over there, bluffing knowing I wanted
- 4:57Speaker 3: to come back.
- 4:59Speaker 1: He said, you said you're a coach. Nah, we good.
- 5:01Speaker 2: So so so what'd you say my apartment would be again?
- 5:05Speaker 2: You said right by the house. Okay, yeah, I mean no,
- 5:07Speaker 2: I'm going to I'm going you know, I'm going to California.
- 5:13Speaker 1: So Gilly is.
- 5:14Speaker 2: One of your mentors, another South Carolina great, former defensive
- 5:18Speaker 2: Player of the Year, good friend of mine. Talk about
- 5:21Speaker 2: your relationship with him and what he's done to help
- 5:24Speaker 2: you and mentor you through your journey.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Like my older brother, my best friend. You know, we
- 5:28Speaker 4: talk every day just about everything, like literally football. If
- 5:31Speaker 4: you go through our threads, probably like two hundred and
- 5:33Speaker 4: fifty three hundred videos and just us and the stuff
- 5:35Speaker 4: back and forth to each other.
- 5:36Speaker 3: So we talk every day. Actually, just talked to.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Him last night. He'll be out here next next week
- 5:42Speaker 4: when the draft comes or two weeks it'll come see me.
- 5:44Speaker 4: But that's like my older brother, and I was just
- 5:46Speaker 4: with him in Dallas, So like we're really really close,
- 5:48Speaker 4: like super tight because we see the game the same
- 5:50Speaker 4: way and it's kind of rare when you find somebody
- 5:51Speaker 4: who sees it that way. And when you find somebody
- 5:54Speaker 4: like that, that's huge. So he's been a huge mentor
- 5:56Speaker 4: for me.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Yeah, he's great, and he's a great technician. You know,
- 6:01Speaker 2: he and I talk. We don't have three hundred videos
- 6:03Speaker 2: between us, but yeah, we have a pretty good relationship. Uh,
- 6:07Speaker 2: And you know, I've helped him sometimes and talked him
- 6:10Speaker 2: through some free agency stuff. And just talk the game.
- 6:13Speaker 2: But he has an incredible knack and natural like instincts
- 6:18Speaker 2: for a corner, like some people just built to play corner.
- 6:21Speaker 1: And Gilly words, He's like, Gilly, you can't teach that.
- 6:25Speaker 1: You can't.
- 6:25Speaker 2: You can't read it in the book. I can't go
- 6:27Speaker 2: tell no kid what you were thinking on that play.
- 6:29Speaker 4: Because jumping outside and taking it for sticks and taking
- 6:36Speaker 4: it for six I'm like, Gilly, you out here playing
- 6:39Speaker 4: with them dropped? You got he got something different about him?
- 6:45Speaker 1: He do, he do? But what is your like?
- 6:50Speaker 2: I want to talk football now because you got you
- 6:53Speaker 2: got two books on your career in college.
- 6:55Speaker 1: We got to get your own books.
- 6:57Speaker 2: No, no, I'm kind of questioning your former receiver a
- 7:02Speaker 2: little bit. So now how do we get your hands
- 7:05Speaker 2: on the football more in the National Football League? Because
- 7:07Speaker 2: I'll tell you this, I played corner for two years
- 7:11Speaker 2: in college. I had six and I'll tell you this,
- 7:13Speaker 2: I really didn't learn to play corner until I got
- 7:15Speaker 2: the league because I was a receiver in college for
- 7:18Speaker 2: my first two years three years, then a red shirted,
- 7:21Speaker 2: got an injury red shirt, and then played corner the
- 7:23Speaker 2: last two years. I didn't really know how to pedal.
- 7:26Speaker 2: You know, I was just kind of out there floating,
- 7:27Speaker 2: but I knew how to play receiver and recognize the
- 7:30Speaker 2: concepts and so that, you know, get you a couple.
- 7:34Speaker 4: I would say, I would say, first, it starts off
- 7:36Speaker 4: with just you know, having the ability, you know, all
- 7:38Speaker 4: the athleticism and all those things. Sometimes just gotta take risks.
- 7:41Speaker 4: You know, I'm saying, like, you know what's coming, you
- 7:42Speaker 4: getting at four point one, you know that slant coming,
- 7:44Speaker 4: just go jump it. You know what I'm saying, Like
- 7:46Speaker 4: little things like that. Or if they're getting a bunch
- 7:48Speaker 4: and three goes flat right now, then I know I'm
- 7:50Speaker 4: expecting spacing and things like that. So just understanding like, hey,
- 7:53Speaker 4: you can take risk at Tomsley using all my athletic
- 7:55Speaker 4: ability even in a one on one place. Because in
- 7:57Speaker 4: this defense at South Carolina, like we gonna play man
- 7:59Speaker 4: the man. That's just who we are. Like we're gonna
- 8:01Speaker 4: play like, hey, you gotta beat us over the top.
- 8:03Speaker 4: And I feel like there's a few players I left
- 8:06Speaker 4: out there where I dropped a few of them and
- 8:07Speaker 4: I need to get my head back and steal some.
- 8:09Speaker 4: So but that it's coming, it's definitely.
- 8:13Speaker 2: I'll tell you this about the league I played for
- 8:17Speaker 2: eleven years or so, I had forty one if you.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Include the playoffs.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Yeah, of those forty one probably like twenty eight or nine.
- 8:26Speaker 4: Balls exactly, Like.
- 8:30Speaker 2: If you're gonna hear you not beating me on the
- 8:31Speaker 2: nine ball now that I'm about And it's about positioning.
- 8:36Speaker 2: It's about getting your head around, it's about trusting, and
- 8:39Speaker 2: it's also about understanding. You know where you are on
- 8:42Speaker 2: the field, the position that people are in, and then
- 8:45Speaker 2: the tempo of the receiver. You you know what I mean.
- 8:47Speaker 2: When you line up they feel a little bit.
- 8:50Speaker 1: You can feel it. You're looking them in the eye.
- 8:53Speaker 1: They fix it.
- 8:56Speaker 2: You can feel it. You can feel it. But what
- 8:59Speaker 2: I would tell you to work on mentally is in practice,
- 9:04Speaker 2: pick it off. Like there's never a wasted rep. There's
- 9:07Speaker 2: never a time where picking the ball isn't the best play.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Like if you're going through a drill, you're knocking it down,
- 9:13Speaker 2: you waste the drill. You can get to get to, like,
- 9:18Speaker 2: you have to train yourself to pick the ball off
- 9:20Speaker 2: so that when you not you know, I'm not trying
- 9:22Speaker 2: to preach to you, but when you get those positions consistently,
- 9:27Speaker 2: your body naturally says, oh, pick the ball off, and
- 9:29Speaker 2: then when you say, oh it's too far to pick
- 9:31Speaker 2: it off, you bat it.
- 9:34Speaker 1: That's my two cents.
- 9:36Speaker 4: I believe it, that's true. That's I'm gonna take with
- 9:38Speaker 4: me for sure.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I want you to. I want you to lead
- 9:41Speaker 1: the league and picks your rookie year. I'm sitting there like.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Yeah, so outside of Gilly, what are other Who are
- 9:52Speaker 2: some other guys that you watched and tried to pattern
- 9:54Speaker 2: your game after.
- 9:56Speaker 4: Obviously I think you know it's another side Carolna guy
- 9:59Speaker 4: jac I think all that ability. Then I watched Gonzo
- 10:04Speaker 4: obviously sertain because I feel like you're the best in
- 10:06Speaker 4: the game right now just from a technician standpoint, and
- 10:09Speaker 4: you don't find many like that. And then honestly like
- 10:11Speaker 4: watching Devil Witherspoons because the way he throws his body
- 10:13Speaker 4: around in the versatility, and then the McDuffie's you know
- 10:15Speaker 4: what I'm saying, how smart they are and how Spags
- 10:17Speaker 4: see him and how he fit in that scheme was
- 10:20Speaker 4: just special to me. And just see how they utilize this.
- 10:22Speaker 4: That's probably man, guys, I'm watching it right now.
- 10:24Speaker 2: You gotta be careful because McDuffie is in a different
- 10:27Speaker 2: place and Spags is looking for a corner.
- 10:28Speaker 1: You might find your way the.
- 10:30Speaker 2: City before you play better Eye last boy. They ain't
- 10:33Speaker 2: got no corners right now. They watched both vic Paris
- 10:35Speaker 2: goes to the Rams, so they are looking and you
- 10:38Speaker 2: would be a perfect fit for what they do really well.
- 10:40Speaker 1: So that's a great I like that. How far do
- 10:45Speaker 1: you and Nick go back?
- 10:46Speaker 2: You talked about before we got on the show about
- 10:49Speaker 2: coming to Seattle to watch him in the NFC Championship game.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Obviously he's a South Carolina guy that you didn't necessarily
- 10:56Speaker 2: get to play with.
- 10:57Speaker 1: But you guys go back to seven on sevens.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm in high school. So high school, we both
- 11:02Speaker 4: had no offers. Like you talk about like two players
- 11:04Speaker 4: who were super freakish. We had no offers, like we
- 11:07Speaker 4: were super under recruited, so we kind of just kind
- 11:10Speaker 4: of clicked instantly, Like well, when we got out there,
- 11:12Speaker 4: it's kind of like game respect game, you know, and
- 11:15Speaker 4: after that point, like, hey, we didn't care who got
- 11:17Speaker 4: what offers or what. It's just a really good brotherhood.
- 11:19Speaker 3: And I actually just tested him mystery too, so he
- 11:22Speaker 3: good to talk to all the time.
- 11:23Speaker 4: That's my dude.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, he's a good dude.
- 11:27Speaker 2: What's something about playing corner, the toughest part of playing
- 11:30Speaker 2: corner that you think the casual fan just doesn't seem
- 11:33Speaker 2: to understand.
- 11:35Speaker 4: I would say it could be good ninety five percent
- 11:38Speaker 4: of the game, but you give it one little play,
- 11:40Speaker 4: you know, that's the five percent that you know, that's all.
- 11:43Speaker 4: That's all the media cares this year. That's what people
- 11:45Speaker 4: who don't really understand the game care to see. They
- 11:47Speaker 4: don't understand like, hey, you give you gave up, you
- 11:49Speaker 4: gave up a non ball in two minute situations. That's
- 11:52Speaker 4: what they're looking at and.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Not caring about the whole game where you they have.
- 11:56Speaker 4: This guy catch a ball on you. It's not about that,
- 11:57Speaker 4: you know that. It's about what you give up in
- 11:59Speaker 4: this That's reality. It's a production eight.
- 12:02Speaker 2: It is a production business in the league is no
- 12:04Speaker 2: different than that. Like you could you could be if
- 12:07Speaker 2: you play sixty snaps, you could be lockdown for fifty eight.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Let you give up that slant on third and five
- 12:14Speaker 2: that leads to a first down in a field goal.
- 12:16Speaker 1: To win the game. You are getting You are getting cooked,
- 12:20Speaker 1: young brother.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Yes, And that's another part of the game that I
- 12:25Speaker 2: want to talk to you about is the social media
- 12:28Speaker 2: and negativity, the vitrol.
- 12:30Speaker 1: That's how do you avoid that?
- 12:33Speaker 2: Because playing corner, no matter what, I've had seasons where
- 12:37Speaker 2: I led the league in interceptions, we're number one defense,
- 12:40Speaker 2: We freaking roared to the super Bowl, killed everybody, and
- 12:44Speaker 2: there's still people on your page like you could suck,
- 12:47Speaker 2: like you suck, like you're the worst corner in the league.
- 12:49Speaker 2: It's like, clearly, guys, I got eight picks. I ain't
- 12:52Speaker 2: giving up no passes. I'm the guy, you.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Know what I mean?
- 12:55Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, But how do you kind of drown out
- 12:59Speaker 2: the noise and stay focused?
- 13:02Speaker 1: Uh?
- 13:02Speaker 4: For me, I think you got to understand, like, hey,
- 13:04Speaker 4: you got to understand they don't understand coverages and what's
- 13:06Speaker 4: being asked of you, so they don't understand what's going
- 13:08Speaker 4: through in this building. That's the only thing that matters
- 13:10Speaker 4: is what the people in the building are telling you
- 13:12Speaker 4: what matters. So I feel like all of that stuff
- 13:14Speaker 4: is like anybody can go on Instagram here and account
- 13:17Speaker 4: Twitter and just spit out whatever you want to say.
- 13:20Speaker 4: But I mean, what is what was the point of it?
- 13:22Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying like, really, the point of
- 13:23Speaker 4: it is because all they want is attention for you
- 13:25Speaker 4: to see it, and they just hope you respond to it.
- 13:27Speaker 4: So at that point it's this noise like, hey, you
- 13:30Speaker 4: don't understand the game, Like, hey, I do. I do
- 13:32Speaker 4: this for a living, Like this is what I do?
- 13:34Speaker 4: So why would I care about what you've been through
- 13:36Speaker 4: the account? And I'm not right right?
- 13:39Speaker 1: Well, have you read some of the stuff that they're
- 13:41Speaker 1: saying about you in the draft? Like uh?
- 13:44Speaker 2: On NFL dot com they said, yeah, no. They they
- 13:47Speaker 2: list your strengths really explosive, great man the man coverage,
- 13:51Speaker 2: really twitchy athlete, make makes good plays on the ball,
- 13:55Speaker 2: but they say things like the low average and route recognition, uh,
- 13:59Speaker 2: break matching from all, struggles to find playmaking position with
- 14:02Speaker 2: the back to the ball, below average tackling and adjustments
- 14:05Speaker 2: on ball fifty to fifty balls. What do you feel
- 14:08Speaker 2: about that? And how are you addressing things that they
- 14:11Speaker 2: call your weaknesses? Because I could read my draft profile
- 14:14Speaker 2: they said I was gonna be a competent back up.
- 14:18Speaker 2: I couldn't play the blow, I couldn't tackle well in space,
- 14:21Speaker 2: I didn't recognize routes, and I was an average athlete
- 14:25Speaker 2: that was high wasted and couldn't keep up with NFL speed.
- 14:30Speaker 4: I think for people like that who made those accounts
- 14:32Speaker 4: to make all those little cut ups and things like that,
- 14:34Speaker 4: let's visit that in through four years when I'm trying
- 14:36Speaker 4: to break the market. So well, we'll see, we'll visit
- 14:39Speaker 4: that little visit that through that's a goal. Let's visit
- 14:42Speaker 4: that through four gets to see about utist. You can't
- 14:44Speaker 4: match things and you don't got IQ below average in
- 14:47Speaker 4: all these areas, so we'll see, we'll see. Let's let's
- 14:50Speaker 4: do the chip.
- 14:52Speaker 1: You've played outside corner your whole career.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Do you think you have the versatility to play inside
- 14:57Speaker 2: to play safety in some of these role Nick Nick
- 15:00Speaker 2: went to Seattle as a safety, but they played him
- 15:04Speaker 2: in a crazy unique robber role that he played everything
- 15:07Speaker 2: from linebacker to defensive end.
- 15:10Speaker 1: But if a team asked you to do that, what
- 15:13Speaker 1: would you say?
- 15:15Speaker 4: Yeah, that's easy, super easy. You know Coach White here,
- 15:18Speaker 4: you know he utilized me in that role up at
- 15:20Speaker 4: times two and third down. And obviously I can play
- 15:22Speaker 4: it on base now too, like I know everybody doing
- 15:24Speaker 4: so I know the rotations and I know if I'm
- 15:27Speaker 4: supposed to be list. I understand how to put words together,
- 15:29Speaker 4: and like I'm just super smart in that kind of way.
- 15:32Speaker 4: So that's not that's super easy for me.
- 15:33Speaker 2: It's easy to justine, what how much time do you
- 15:38Speaker 2: spend preparing for games? Like if I ask you the
- 15:40Speaker 2: mental side of the game and they're talking about route
- 15:43Speaker 2: recognition and things like that, how much time do you
- 15:46Speaker 2: spend identifying you know, first and second down, third down,
- 15:50Speaker 2: their concepts, the things that they do well in translating
- 15:53Speaker 2: it onto the practice field in game field.
- 15:56Speaker 4: Honestly, man, Like I'll be honestly lying to if I
- 15:59Speaker 4: told you the moment I get off the practice field,
- 16:01Speaker 4: I'm probably up here in ten minutes, you.
- 16:03Speaker 3: Know, like just right now stuff and just watching it,
- 16:05Speaker 3: watching over and over like when I go home, Like
- 16:07Speaker 3: I'm literally.
- 16:08Speaker 4: A junkie at this stuff, Like this is what I do.
- 16:10Speaker 3: Like I like getting on the board, I like drawing
- 16:12Speaker 3: up schemes.
- 16:12Speaker 4: I like studying all these dcs. Like that's just who
- 16:15Speaker 4: I am, so uh it, don't never stop and coach
- 16:18Speaker 4: why you probably call Coach White. He'll tell you like, hey, man,
- 16:20Speaker 4: I don't know if there's the smarter corner that I've had,
- 16:22Speaker 4: you know, so it's true.
- 16:24Speaker 1: I love that.
- 16:25Speaker 2: I love that because that's that's the great separator in
- 16:28Speaker 2: the National Football League. It's everybody's athletic, everybody's fast, explosive,
- 16:32Speaker 2: can jump out of the gym, play multiple sports. But
- 16:35Speaker 2: the guys that can can separate themselves from the cream
- 16:38Speaker 2: of the crop are the guys that can understand the schemes,
- 16:41Speaker 2: how they're being attacked, how the scheme's being attacked, what
- 16:44Speaker 2: they're in. I say, we're in cover four, Yeah, all right,
- 16:48Speaker 2: they're three by one. I'm backside backs backs away. So
- 16:52Speaker 2: clearly it's four strong, backside slant. But teams are smart,
- 16:56Speaker 2: they know their habits.
- 16:57Speaker 4: Window dress. You're gonna motion away from it so you
- 16:59Speaker 4: don't see it because you're pressed. You know they're gonna
- 17:01Speaker 4: try to get get it, get it away from you.
- 17:03Speaker 4: Nobody want to give you a clue, like and that's
- 17:06Speaker 4: the best.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Job you do at it one hundred percent and one
- 17:09Speaker 2: hundred percent, and your job on third and five or
- 17:13Speaker 2: or after an explosive run and understanding the tendencies and
- 17:17Speaker 2: understanding the percentages and then being able to translate that
- 17:20Speaker 2: on game day in the moment in big games. Is
- 17:24Speaker 2: what allows great corners to beat Hall of Fame corners, Like, Hey,
- 17:30Speaker 2: we studied this all week. Now it's fourth quarter with
- 17:33Speaker 2: two minutes to go. We ran this play three four
- 17:35Speaker 2: times in practice, but my shoulder hurts. I'm a little dazed.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Right now we run into blitz that I know if
- 17:40Speaker 2: he put puts pressure on the quarterback, he's gonna throw
- 17:43Speaker 2: it hot to the flag. Can I pick this ball
- 17:44Speaker 2: off and win us the game?
- 17:45Speaker 4: Exactly? Can I see the quick game and change it?
- 17:49Speaker 1: And am I willing to put my foot in the
- 17:51Speaker 1: ground and risk.
- 17:51Speaker 4: Being wrong and risk being wrong knowing I'm knowing I
- 17:54Speaker 4: got a third? That's I trusted a drop or just
- 17:58Speaker 4: trusting your prep that I've seen all we're gonna take
- 18:02Speaker 4: and I can explain it to my coach the next
- 18:04Speaker 4: day in film. Hey, what are you doing on this play?
- 18:06Speaker 1: Coach?
- 18:06Speaker 2: Remember that play you showed me all we can film
- 18:08Speaker 2: just to play. This is the coverage you're in, This
- 18:10Speaker 2: is what you told me to do, This is what
- 18:11Speaker 2: I've done all week. If they double moved me, hey,
- 18:14Speaker 2: they bet they were better than us today.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Exactly what coverage do you prefer to play?
- 18:21Speaker 4: Man a man? Love it.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Love it.
- 18:25Speaker 2: They teams play in the National Football League, no team
- 18:31Speaker 2: outside of Cleveland. Cleveland played the most. I think they
- 18:34Speaker 2: were at forty percent. Yeah, next was the Broncos at
- 18:38Speaker 2: thirty two or thirty one percent with Pat Chupan and
- 18:41Speaker 2: the Boys and and Riley, So it's not a ton Yeah,
- 18:47Speaker 2: you're a really smart player. What other coverages do you
- 18:50Speaker 2: like to play?
- 18:51Speaker 4: I think the match stuff obviously, the cover three matches
- 18:54Speaker 4: in the match quarters that all the fake zeros, Flores
- 18:57Speaker 4: doesn't Minnesoda out for lack his gree so all to
- 18:59Speaker 4: cover to inverse when everybody down up their mugget everything up.
- 19:03Speaker 4: But I mean that's any coverage really. There's so many
- 19:05Speaker 4: weaknesses and strengths to every cover. So I was like
- 19:09Speaker 4: the fire and zones and things like that. Just sending
- 19:11Speaker 4: one and being able to get an extra hatch here
- 19:13Speaker 4: and there, but also understanding you got a little bit underneath,
- 19:15Speaker 4: helps a little bit gone now, so understanding what's coming.
- 19:19Speaker 4: It just really depends on who we play, you know,
- 19:21Speaker 4: Like I love all the fake zeros, probably be in
- 19:23Speaker 4: the zero, so I like all that stuff.
- 19:25Speaker 1: What team is showing the most interesting you throughout this process?
- 19:30Speaker 4: Man, I honestly everybody outside everybody, I want to figure
- 19:35Speaker 4: out one and everybody else on me about Oh you
- 19:38Speaker 4: didn't say anything about but no, everybody did pretty good.
- 19:41Speaker 4: So it's just been on the road a lot. But
- 19:43Speaker 4: everybody I've talked to really much everybody, and I still
- 19:45Speaker 4: talk to a good bit of people every single day.
- 19:47Speaker 4: So it's been really non stock.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Politically correct answer. Oh that's funny, but I like that.
- 19:58Speaker 1: I like that.
- 19:58Speaker 2: All right, let's let's go rapid fire. I'm gonna rapid
- 20:01Speaker 2: fire questions. You just give me quick answers.
- 20:04Speaker 1: You ready. Best receiver you faced.
- 20:07Speaker 4: Kevin Concession.
- 20:11Speaker 1: From text and m Yeah. What made him special?
- 20:14Speaker 4: Uh, this is how smart he is, how deceptive you know,
- 20:17Speaker 4: he really good versus off Man's and things like that.
- 20:20Speaker 4: So they put you in a trick to situations where
- 20:21Speaker 4: you utilize the shift you needs it as I Q
- 20:24Speaker 4: with things. And that's actually my former roommate. So you know,
- 20:27Speaker 4: he's super smart, you know, and they really good person too.
- 20:31Speaker 2: That's the worst when you know, when you really know
- 20:33Speaker 2: him personal that you're like, I know all the tricks,
- 20:35Speaker 2: but that's kind of tricking me a little bit.
- 20:36Speaker 3: Look exactly, like, hey, is it still the same, you know, right, But.
- 20:41Speaker 2: That's dB you study growing up. That's me and Champ
- 20:49Speaker 2: just had a discussion about this on uh. Best advice
- 20:53Speaker 2: Gilly gave.
- 20:53Speaker 3: You just be yourself, trust audibility.
- 20:57Speaker 4: You already did all the work. Just keep being you.
- 20:59Speaker 4: Don't forget who you are when you get there.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Best trash talk you ever used on the field.
- 21:03Speaker 4: That you can say here, I don't think I could
- 21:06Speaker 4: probably say it out here, but definitely swagger for sure.
- 21:15Speaker 1: I love it. One thing people don't know about you.
- 21:19Speaker 4: That I like to go fishing.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Okay, okay, what's your favorite kind of fish to catch.
- 21:26Speaker 4: Right now on the pond, right now, so fast, right now.
- 21:28Speaker 4: But I will probably go catch me in striper here
- 21:30Speaker 4: soon on the lake, So probably give me some striper something.
- 21:33Speaker 1: South Carolina Boys. One goal for you your rookie year.
- 21:42Speaker 4: Just go go earn a job. Go on a job.
- 21:44Speaker 4: That's where it starts.
- 21:45Speaker 3: Go on the job, make plays of special teams and
- 21:47Speaker 3: dese Just don't be one dimission.
- 21:51Speaker 2: In five years from now? What do you want people
- 21:53Speaker 2: to say about you? I'm the National Football League.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Down, the best quarterback in the league, and then I
- 21:58Speaker 3: got a chance to be an All Pro every year.
- 22:01Speaker 4: I think that's where it starts. And now I'm a winner.
- 22:03Speaker 4: So that's what I want people to say about.
- 22:05Speaker 1: I love it. I love it.
- 22:07Speaker 2: You can control a lot of that, you know, operation
- 22:09Speaker 2: and attitude, approach, you know, practice habits. You got any
- 22:14Speaker 2: questions for me?
- 22:15Speaker 4: What do you think separates you?
- 22:17Speaker 3: And when did you feel like you made that jump
- 22:18Speaker 3: when you were in the National Football League.
- 22:22Speaker 1: I think my mentality and and and my understanding of
- 22:27Speaker 1: the game separates me. My understanding of West Coast offenses
- 22:30Speaker 1: and and how how concepts are married to each other,
- 22:35Speaker 1: how double slants are slat flat, or which concepts are
- 22:39Speaker 1: deep over with a double dig or a big post
- 22:42Speaker 1: behind it, things like that from playing receiver in college. Yeah,
- 22:48Speaker 1: I think I The first game I started against Cincinnati
- 22:54Speaker 1: and AJ Green, who was a top six pick in
- 22:58Speaker 1: my draft.
- 23:00Speaker 4: Come out the suity.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:00Speaker 2: It was South Carolina, good player, and so we were
- 23:03Speaker 2: we were matched up. It's my first game starting. It
- 23:06Speaker 2: was like sixth game of the season, and he's obviously
- 23:08Speaker 2: top pick, first round. I'm a fifth round nobody starting
- 23:11Speaker 2: this first game because we had some injuries and Aj
- 23:15Speaker 2: is a super quiet guy in any normal state. From
- 23:19Speaker 2: what I understand after that. For some reason, in that game,
- 23:22Speaker 2: AJ was talking cash and I don't know why. I
- 23:26Speaker 2: don't know why AJ was talking cash. He was on one,
- 23:30Speaker 2: and it made me. It put me on one.
- 23:33Speaker 4: You have to show it up.
- 23:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I have to show it. So I booked AJ.
- 23:39Speaker 1: In that game.
- 23:40Speaker 2: They throw up a fade. I book AJ. I'm talking cash. AJ,
- 23:43Speaker 2: like you, you basically said I didn't deserve to be
- 23:45Speaker 2: out here. That's one book boy. You ain't doing nothing.
- 23:47Speaker 2: And so that moment kind of gave me reassurance that, oh,
- 23:51Speaker 2: I could play in this league and I could dominate.
- 23:54Speaker 2: I'm a guy. I'm a guy in this league. And
- 23:56Speaker 2: I end up with four picks that year. The next
- 23:58Speaker 2: year I went in with a lot of confidence. Obviously
- 24:01Speaker 2: the starter coming in made the All Rookie team, and
- 24:03Speaker 2: then second year I had eight picks, First team All Pro.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Dominated the league that year. I probably I think I
- 24:11Speaker 2: gave up forty three percent completion percentage or something on
- 24:16Speaker 2: my like ninety targets. I think I gave up thirty
- 24:18Speaker 2: something catches. And then the next year I was All
- 24:23Speaker 2: Pro again, had eight interceptions, left the league and picks
- 24:25Speaker 2: twenty picks in my first three years, and so I
- 24:29Speaker 2: think it was my rookie year that that game really
- 24:32Speaker 2: kind of reassured me, because I think sometimes everybody has doubt.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Anybody who says they don't have a little bit of
- 24:38Speaker 2: shred of doubt is gonna lie.
- 24:39Speaker 1: I'm gonna be honest, no doubt.
- 24:41Speaker 2: But that kind of reassured me that everything I was doing,
- 24:45Speaker 2: the work I was putting in, the time I was
- 24:47Speaker 2: putting in, the things I was telling myself, I was
- 24:49Speaker 2: right that it was worth it.
- 24:51Speaker 1: It was worth it.
- 24:51Speaker 2: It was one hundred percent worth it. And I got
- 24:55Speaker 2: to the league and they helped They put me in
- 24:58Speaker 2: my comfort zone.
- 24:59Speaker 1: You know.
- 24:59Speaker 2: In college, it was so much of like, hey, getting
- 25:02Speaker 2: this low stance and do like this and pedal like this,
- 25:05Speaker 2: and I'm like, bro, I don't pedal. Well, you know
- 25:07Speaker 2: what I mean, Like y'all putting me in a heart position.
- 25:10Speaker 2: I can't transition out of this, like you know what
- 25:12Speaker 2: I mean. I'm not trying to lie to y'all. I'm
- 25:13Speaker 2: just my body won't do it. So let me put
- 25:15Speaker 2: my butt to this. I'm gonna put my butt to
- 25:18Speaker 2: the sideline, and I'm a receiver. I can see the game.
- 25:21Speaker 2: I'll get to the spot before he gets myself. Yeah,
- 25:26Speaker 2: ran them myself, so let me just run. And when
- 25:29Speaker 2: they Pete Carroll allowed me to do that. Christ Reshard
- 25:31Speaker 2: allowed me to do that. And when they did, my
- 25:34Speaker 2: game just flourished, blossom.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Yeah, that was it. It's great. Three times. That was
- 25:43Speaker 1: a great question, by the way.
- 25:44Speaker 4: No, No, I appreciate you. You know, I like watching
- 25:46Speaker 4: all your old stuff too, though. It's all the bells
- 25:48Speaker 4: and all those things and pressed men and obviously you
- 25:50Speaker 4: know coach White got all the cut up, so right
- 25:53Speaker 4: righte it. We won't stop seeing it every year. Like
- 25:56Speaker 4: the other day, I think somebody took like a ty step.
- 25:59Speaker 3: It was like, no, it's a six inch stell right here,
- 26:02Speaker 3: it's a sixth and it's predetermined.
- 26:04Speaker 4: It's predetermined. We don't we don't even look at them.
- 26:07Speaker 4: Don't even listen to the snap. It's predetermined.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Off his bad leg, mom, it's pretdetermined all for any movement.
- 26:15Speaker 4: Y y'all watching the back leg, watching and watching the
- 26:17Speaker 4: back leg.
- 26:19Speaker 1: That's interesting. That's interesting because Revis Revis used to we had.
- 26:22Speaker 2: A good discussion about this too, because people think because
- 26:26Speaker 2: you got some you know, I mean, because you're competitive
- 26:28Speaker 2: you don't never talk. We do.
- 26:31Speaker 4: He watched the knees. I was like, how are you
- 26:35Speaker 4: watching the knees? I be the first flint stough. You
- 26:39Speaker 4: can't go nowhere right.
- 26:40Speaker 1: But he's watching them through the concept.
- 26:44Speaker 2: Said do what different? Previously different? Different, dud totally different.
- 26:51Speaker 2: I watched the bottom of the numbers. I watched the
- 26:53Speaker 2: if it's if it's two numbers right between them, if
- 26:56Speaker 2: it's if it's just one. I just watched the bottom
- 26:58Speaker 2: of the number. Wherever that That's where I'm at with it.
- 27:00Speaker 2: That's space, but it's it's many ways to skin and chicken.
- 27:04Speaker 2: Everybody does it differently. But as long as you can
- 27:07Speaker 2: be patient and you can sit in there and you
- 27:09Speaker 2: give yourself, how much distance do you have impressed?
- 27:12Speaker 3: I give it about one and a half, about one
- 27:14Speaker 3: and a half.
- 27:14Speaker 4: That's why I'm going with now.
- 27:16Speaker 1: Perfect How long did it take you to get comfortable?
- 27:19Speaker 1: In one and a half.
- 27:21Speaker 4: You take a little minute now, because you gotta trust
- 27:23Speaker 4: yourself in that thing. You gotta learn to sit in ure,
- 27:30Speaker 4: sit in there, sit in there, trusted, trust.
- 27:33Speaker 1: It, and don't let your feet be dead.
- 27:35Speaker 4: Don't let them be dead. That's why you got that
- 27:37Speaker 4: predetermined movement. That's why you are should be moving.
- 27:41Speaker 2: You could coach your baby. Yeah, that's that's That's exactly
- 27:48Speaker 2: where I said. I'm at one and a half. And
- 27:49Speaker 2: in the league, these Z receivers sometimes you end up
- 27:52Speaker 2: at three. Exactly, you at three, these boys checking, I'm like, wait, boys,
- 28:00Speaker 2: that's still running back, right.
- 28:05Speaker 1: But hey, when he when he come, when he get
- 28:07Speaker 1: into the lawn, you still got to deal with me.
- 28:09Speaker 4: You got to stay there, right.
- 28:12Speaker 2: That's awesome, man, that's awesome. But again with with with picks,
- 28:17Speaker 2: it's habits. It's habits, I promise you it's habits. It's walkthroughs.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Want to want to walk through be the be, be
- 28:24Speaker 2: the dude. People get mad at in walk throughs exactly,
- 28:26Speaker 2: like because that's your habit. Like, hey, this is how
- 28:29Speaker 2: I practice. I practiced like this one hundred percent of
- 28:31Speaker 2: the time. I'm not letting you catch it in walk throughs.
- 28:33Speaker 2: I'm not letting you catch it in practice. I'm not
- 28:34Speaker 2: letting you catch it in the game exactly. And if
- 28:38Speaker 2: you get upset with that because I'm working on my craft,
- 28:40Speaker 2: it's something's.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Wrong with you. You don't want the team to get.
- 28:45Speaker 4: That's reality.
- 28:46Speaker 1: That's reality.
- 28:47Speaker 2: And so when we walked through and we're preparing for
- 28:50Speaker 2: the game, and this scout team in front of us,
- 28:51Speaker 2: and I know, okay, bang, they gave me dig indicator
- 28:55Speaker 2: number two one away ones running a dig Bang, I break.
- 28:58Speaker 2: I checked my indicator one more time. Bank balls coming book.
- 29:01Speaker 2: Thanks getting in toss to the coach like cool practice.
- 29:06Speaker 2: They gonna give you the same play exactly indicator dig
- 29:10Speaker 2: break book. Then you look up in the game, Wait
- 29:13Speaker 2: that dig indicator dig check it again.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Ball coming here, money six. That's if you can get
- 29:25Speaker 1: if you can get jiggy with it. I don't know
- 29:26Speaker 1: what how jiggy you are be saying.
- 29:28Speaker 4: I could fly. I could fly. I'd be good. I
- 29:31Speaker 4: can fly.
- 29:31Speaker 1: I believe it. I believe you got anything else from me.
- 29:34Speaker 4: That's really you know. I'm a big fan, so I
- 29:36Speaker 4: appreciate you.
- 29:37Speaker 1: I appreciate you too, brother, brother. I wish you nothing
- 29:40Speaker 1: but the best. I hope you go top ten.
- 29:42Speaker 4: Uh.
- 29:43Speaker 2: But either way it goes no matter if you go
- 29:45Speaker 2: first round or fifth round. Like myself, it's gonna be
- 29:48Speaker 2: on you and your work ethic to make it happen.
- 29:51Speaker 2: That's just the beginning of your journey.
- 29:53Speaker 1: It ain't the end. It ain't the I've a ride.
- 29:56Speaker 2: You ain't a ride till you hang them cleats up
- 29:58Speaker 2: and let it go, and then you'll be like, that
- 30:00Speaker 2: was a pretty cool rot.
- 30:02Speaker 4: No doubt.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Is that coach White?
- 30:07Speaker 4: Now that's ry blah.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Okay, okay. I couldn't see him, but I can only
- 30:10Speaker 1: see the back of his head.
