Transcript
- 0:39SPEAKER_05: Welcome in everybody to the Talk and Tech podcast.
- 0:42SPEAKER_05: Uh, sorry to start off on a more somber tone, but it was just announced this morning that former Texas Tech head coach and current Mississippi State head football coach Mike Leach has passed away um due to heart complications.
- 0:59SPEAKER_05: This started on Sunday, I believe, is when kind of the first initial reports came out that um he had an accident of some sort and had to be transported to uh Jackson, Mississippi and was not doing well.
- 1:15SPEAKER_05: I mean, there was no good news that um was coming out and that it was really just a matter of time.
- 1:21SPEAKER_05: And um it was finally announced this morning that he has passed by by Mississippi State.
- 1:27SPEAKER_05: Um his family gave a statement.
- 1:30SPEAKER_05: I wanted to read that off first.
- 1:32SPEAKER_05: Um, Mike was a giving and attentive husband, father and grandfather.
- 1:37SPEAKER_05: He was able to participate in organ donation at UMMC as a final act of charity.
- 1:42SPEAKER_05: We are supported and uplifted by the outpouring of love and prayers from family, friends, Mississippi State University, the hospital staff, the football fans around the world.
- 1:51SPEAKER_05: Thank you for sharing the joy of our beloved husband and father's life.
- 1:55SPEAKER_05: This news obviously hits pretty heavy for a lot of Texas Tech fans.
- 1:58SPEAKER_05: Mike Leach was one of the most charismatic, uh, one of the most uh just one of the craziest and most fun personalities in college sports.
- 2:10SPEAKER_05: Um, you don't get really any coaches that are like Mike Leach.
- 2:16SPEAKER_05: Um from his interviews to what he said in post-game locker rooms to um just the eccentric kind of person that he was.
- 2:25SPEAKER_05: Um you know, he's a big part of our our Texas Tech football history.
- 2:31SPEAKER_05: Um got here in 2000, stayed until 2009, when 84 and 43 at Texas Tech, um multiple bowl games, Alamo Bowl, Houston Bowl, Tangerine, Holiday, Cotton, Gator Bowl, I mean Insight Bowl, just uh just a type of the game.
- 2:54SPEAKER_05: One of the most innovative coaches in college football.
- 2:58SPEAKER_05: The air raid offense that he instituted has an effect on nearly every good offense in today's game.
- 3:09SPEAKER_05: He was the guy that really brought exciting and fun football to all fans of college football.
- 3:19SPEAKER_05: Not just Texas Tech, not just Washington State, not just Mississippi State, but all of college football fans.
- 3:25SPEAKER_05: And you're seeing the outpouring of messages and and uh you know, just stories of uh of Mike Leach from people that actually did know him.
- 3:33SPEAKER_05: He was a little before our time.
- 3:35SPEAKER_05: Uh we didn't get to Texas Tech until 2014, so we didn't get to experience the Mike Leach era uh quite uh like a lot of others did.
- 3:43SPEAKER_05: And um but you can just tell from the messages, the the local Lubbock people, the uh college football media that just absolutely adore the guy.
- 3:56SPEAKER_05: And um he was much more than a football coach.
- 3:59SPEAKER_05: He was uh a man that sat down with people and talked about life, um really wanted what was best for the kids, I think.
- 4:09SPEAKER_05: Um while all being one of the greatest football coaches of all time.
- 4:14SPEAKER_05: So um, you know, it's a sad day uh when something like this happens.
- 4:19SPEAKER_05: He was he was only 61 years old and uh heart problems are uh it just sucks.
- 4:25SPEAKER_05: It just sucks to see it go down the way it did.
- 4:28SPEAKER_05: Uh he was still coaching at Mississippi State.
- 4:31SPEAKER_05: I don't think he had really any intentions of uh uh retiring or any of that sort of stuff, but uh you know, sometimes uh sometimes other plans are had for you.
- 4:42SPEAKER_05: And uh, you know, we're always gonna remember Mike as uh just a charismatic, eccentric individual that happened to coach college football and was one of the best ever doing.
- 4:55SPEAKER_05: Um so you know, uh after this news, uh you know, make sure to you know tell your family you love them.
- 5:04SPEAKER_05: Uh if you have kids, tell your kids you love them.
- 5:06SPEAKER_05: If you have grandparents, parents, you know, uh just hug them a little tighter tonight.
- 5:11SPEAKER_05: And uh just rest in peace to one of the best college football coaches to ever live, and an all-time red writer.
- 5:19SPEAKER_05: Rest in peace to Mike Leash.
- 5:26SPEAKER_05: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by the nation, part of the nation podcast network.
- 5:32SPEAKER_05: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 5:35SPEAKER_05: Tristan, Merry Christmas, my man.
- 5:37SPEAKER_04: Merry Christmas, Steven, as I say after taking a big old swig of Irish coffee.
- 5:42SPEAKER_04: Hey, Laddie.
- 5:44SPEAKER_04: It is oh, it's barely not morning anymore.
- 5:46SPEAKER_04: I was about to say, is this the first time we've ever recorded in the morning?
- 5:48SPEAKER_05: This, I mean, this is the earliest.
- 5:50SPEAKER_05: This is the earliest we've ever recorded a podcast.
- 5:52SPEAKER_05: Uh, we're we're starting a new thing here, folks.
- 5:55SPEAKER_05: We're doing a uh uh a Sunday recording from now on because uh our guy over here uh is pretty busy during the week.
- 6:02SPEAKER_05: Uh, I'm pretty busy during the week, so it's just easier for both of us to do this.
- 6:06SPEAKER_05: Um, also, this is going to be our last episode uh until after Christmas.
- 6:12SPEAKER_05: It's we need some time away, we're gonna do some traveling, uh, we're gonna be with our families.
- 6:17SPEAKER_05: So this is going to be the Christmas extravaganza episode of Talk and Tech.
- 6:22SPEAKER_04: If y'all had to look at Steven's face every single week, you'd understand.
- 6:26SPEAKER_04: Like how I get it.
- 6:28SPEAKER_04: It wears on you, and yeah, eventually you just need to take a breather.
- 6:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 6:32SPEAKER_05: No, imagine looking at in the mirror every day.
- 6:35SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's just awful.
- 6:37SPEAKER_04: I don't I don't want to live in Steven's life.
- 6:38SPEAKER_04: That's all I'm trying to say.
- 6:40SPEAKER_04: Inside of his skin is a rough place to be.
- 6:42SPEAKER_04: It's a tough, it's a tough deal, but we get through it.
- 6:44SPEAKER_05: We get through it.
- 6:45SPEAKER_05: Uh we're gonna be talking bowl games, we're gonna be talking basketball, we're gonna be talking roster changeup because that's how it works in college football these days.
- 6:56SPEAKER_05: Uh, a lot of players enter the transfer portal, a lot of players um, you know, leave from last year.
- 7:02SPEAKER_05: It's it's a whole thing.
- 7:03SPEAKER_05: We're gonna also talk a little recruiting, so it's gonna be kind of a loaded episode here for you guys, and then maybe a little Christmas talk at the end.
- 7:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah, got big presents, little presents, got the stocking stuffers.
- 7:13SPEAKER_04: You got it, you got it all here.
- 7:14SPEAKER_05: You got it all here on but mostly coal, obviously.
- 7:18SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 7:18SPEAKER_04: Since you're listening to us, but you you get you get the vibe.
- 7:23SPEAKER_05: The people get it.
- 7:24SPEAKER_05: The people get it.
- 7:24SPEAKER_05: Let's start.
- 7:25SPEAKER_05: Let's start with bowl games.
- 7:27SPEAKER_05: Let's start with bowl games because um the big 12 had eight teams make a bowl, um, which is pretty impressive.
- 7:34SPEAKER_04: I think that speaks tell me tell me the uh the math, tell me the math on that one.
- 7:38SPEAKER_05: What eight eight out of ten.
- 7:40SPEAKER_05: I believe that's eighty percent of the biggest.
- 7:42SPEAKER_05: I believe that's eighty percent.
- 7:43SPEAKER_05: Yes, I believe.
- 7:43SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 7:44SPEAKER_05: I'm not a math guy, but I don't know.
- 7:46SPEAKER_05: Could be.
- 7:47SPEAKER_05: But uh it starts.
- 7:49SPEAKER_05: Let's let's start with the big one and then we'll kind of work our way down and then probably talk about Texas Tech last here.
- 7:56SPEAKER_05: Um TCU made the playoff.
- 7:58SPEAKER_05: Um, as the three seed, uh, well deserved.
- 8:02SPEAKER_05: Um, what are kind of your what were your thoughts on TCU making the playoff?
- 8:07SPEAKER_04: Well deserved, man.
- 8:08SPEAKER_04: I was kind of sweating for them to that they weren't they weren't gonna make it a little bit, a little bit, because I was like, is this the first time the playoff committee actually commits a crime?
- 8:18SPEAKER_04: Then you should put them on trial.
- 8:19SPEAKER_04: Um, but they somehow pulled through, they really did.
- 8:22SPEAKER_04: And um, this is absolutely deserved.
- 8:25SPEAKER_04: I mean, screw TCU and all that.
- 8:27SPEAKER_04: I hate them.
- 8:27SPEAKER_04: I hate how you know this little school of Fort Worth is allowed to do this sort of thing.
- 8:32SPEAKER_04: Um, but it's absolutely deserved.
- 8:35SPEAKER_04: You lose one game, and their strength of schedule is ridiculous.
- 8:38SPEAKER_04: The Big 12 was stacked this year.
- 8:40SPEAKER_04: It was probably the toughest power five conference to get through this year in totality.
- 8:44SPEAKER_04: I don't mean like at the very top of it, I just mean like top to bottom.
- 8:47SPEAKER_04: You're every week you're walking into it at a potential L.
- 8:50SPEAKER_04: There's nothing you walked into this year in the Big 12 where you're like, oh, this is on Mac W.
- 8:54SPEAKER_04: Um, because even your your common bottom dweller, Kansas, is going to a bowl game this year.
- 9:00SPEAKER_04: So it's nothing was given, and they somehow managed to do it.
- 9:03SPEAKER_04: I mean, hats off to them, especially first year head coach with the Texas Tech alumni at the helm.
- 9:07SPEAKER_04: And it's it's frustrating for us, but I mean, it's deserved for them.
- 9:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 9:13SPEAKER_05: I mean, when you look at the Big 12 in total, Iowa State was your worst team, right?
- 9:16SPEAKER_05: And they had a phenomenal defense.
- 9:18SPEAKER_05: I mean, they had a defense that could have competed with anybody.
- 9:22SPEAKER_05: So, yeah, I think if you're looking from the first place to the last place team, the Big 12 was the deepest and the best conference.
- 9:29SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's how you look at these things.
- 9:30SPEAKER_05: Some people look at the very top and they say, hey, SEC had like you know, three teams in the top eight or whatever, so yeah, that's the best conference.
- 9:38SPEAKER_05: Or uh, you know, two uh Big Ten, Ohio State, Michigan both make the playoffs, so they're automatically the best conference.
- 9:44SPEAKER_05: It's how you look at it.
- 9:45SPEAKER_05: But yeah, when you're talking to us, the deep part of it matters because every week is a you know, you don't get any days off, you know, it's not like a week off where you get to go play Nebraska or a week off where you get to go play Oregon State or something.
- 9:58SPEAKER_05: So yeah, TCU very, very well deserved despite losing the championship game.
- 10:04SPEAKER_04: It's kind of a tired rhetoric that I'm about to say, you know, that's kind of used quite often, but a ring's 1000% true.
- 10:10SPEAKER_04: And you even hear some mainstream media heads using this logic, and it makes a lot of sense.
- 10:14SPEAKER_04: It's if this had a longhorn or an OU logo on the helmet, everyone would be gushing over this team right now.
- 10:23SPEAKER_04: So if you're gonna look at this objectively, as they should as the playoff committee, the TCU deserves to be there no matter what, like no matter even losing the K-State, who's also a very, very good football team.
- 10:33SPEAKER_04: Um, so that I think they made the right decision here.
- 10:36SPEAKER_04: And that's what's so frustrating about uh this this conference talk.
- 10:39SPEAKER_04: If this was OU or UT, the Big 12's really good right now.
- 10:42SPEAKER_04: But since it's TCU, the Big 12's down.
- 10:45SPEAKER_04: And you know, since uh Ohio State, Georgia, and Michigan and USC are doing really well, those conferences look better because the brands that sell are doing better.
- 10:55SPEAKER_04: That's just such a frustrating thing for 80% of the fans in this sport where we support a team that's not a powerhouse, that's not a blue blood.
- 11:02SPEAKER_04: So it's good to see teams TCU's the only one shaking it up in the playoffs this year.
- 11:06SPEAKER_04: So I am, you know, sort of rooting for them.
- 11:09SPEAKER_04: I'm not just not not just because they're like this Big 12 allegiance that got stronger through the realignment, but through the she that's like that's a Texas tech in the playoff right now, all things considered.
- 11:18SPEAKER_04: So that's kind of the way I look at it.
- 11:20SPEAKER_04: And uh, like I said, I'm happy they're there.
- 11:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I I get what you're saying.
- 11:24SPEAKER_05: I don't agree.
- 11:25SPEAKER_05: I am not rooting for TCU even in the slightest.
- 11:28SPEAKER_05: I hope they lose by a million to Michigan, uh, because I hate TCU.
- 11:32SPEAKER_05: And uh I don't want them to win at all.
- 11:35SPEAKER_05: That's yeah, but it's like it's like no, you can't have this.
- 11:38SPEAKER_05: It's like TCU all year.
- 11:40SPEAKER_05: It's like, yeah, you know, cool, big 12 representation, but also no, I hate that it's TCU.
- 11:45SPEAKER_05: Okay, okay.
- 11:46SPEAKER_05: So so hang on to that then.
- 11:47SPEAKER_04: Let's let's what if it's like Kansas State?
- 11:50SPEAKER_05: Oh, I'm all for it.
- 11:52SPEAKER_05: Really?
- 11:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, if it's if Kansas State's in the playoffs, I'm all for it.
- 11:55SPEAKER_05: I go I would root for Kansas State over all those other teams.
- 11:58SPEAKER_05: But yeah, no, because it's TCU, it's an in-state rival.
- 12:02SPEAKER_05: Okay, we had all this beef with them in the offseason.
- 12:04SPEAKER_05: Like, no, I don't want them to win.
- 12:06SPEAKER_05: You leave the state and you're for it.
- 12:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:10SPEAKER_05: Really.
- 12:10SPEAKER_05: I mean, I I I don't know, like, yeah, if it was Oklahoma State, if it was Iowa State, if it was West Virginia, like Kansas, it no, you know, Kansas won't.
- 12:19SPEAKER_05: Never happening, but yeah, but yeah, you know what I'm trying to say.
- 12:22SPEAKER_05: Any any school outside of the state of Texas, like if this was Baylor, I would not be rooting for Bayer.
- 12:27SPEAKER_05: It's just like the matter of fact.
- 12:30SPEAKER_04: All things considered though, this is perfect timing for DC to be doing this because the whole thing about UT and OU leaving was that the Big 12 was going to be left out of the playoffs from now, here henceforth, because the only two teams that could theoret that could theoretically make the playoff in in terms of talent recognition and all blah blah blah, it was UT and OU.
- 12:50SPEAKER_04: And it wasn't so it wasn't that ridiculous of an argument because the only teams that can really win the national championships are that in that come to mind are those types of teams.
- 12:59SPEAKER_04: Um, while we were saying that, no, I mean the Big 12 can still stay in the fight, but maybe they won't be the force that you know maybe they will take a hit.
- 13:07SPEAKER_04: But here's TCU, one of the hateful eight, going completely undefeated in season and solidifying their shot at the playoff.
- 13:14SPEAKER_04: And you know, they're not they're not gonna they're not benefiting from any of the uh you know presumed advantages that OU and UT have.
- 13:22SPEAKER_04: So it's a really great sign for the Big 12 because the whole argument was OU's the only Big 12 team to make the playoffs so far.
- 13:29SPEAKER_04: Once they're gone, is the Big 12 done?
- 13:31SPEAKER_04: And this kind of proves that it's not, that that's it's it's still gonna be a player in the grand scheme of things, and it's great overall for the Big 12.
- 13:39SPEAKER_04: And I hate that it seeks to you, but it's the truth.
- 13:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, I get where you're coming from, and I mean it's it's only gonna get easier when you expand to 12.
- 13:47SPEAKER_05: So that's officially happening here pretty soon.
- 13:49SPEAKER_05: So uh, but yeah, it is cool with one of the last years of the of the four-team playoff that uh you know you get a Big 12 team that is not OU or Texas in there.
- 13:59SPEAKER_04: Um and Cincinnati last year, yeah, that's true.
- 14:02SPEAKER_05: And Cincinnati coming in, they made it as a G5 team.
- 14:05SPEAKER_05: That was really cool to see.
- 14:06SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, I I'm just I'm just never gonna get to the point where I root for TCU.
- 14:12SPEAKER_05: I'm just I feel that it's and so you know, good good for them.
- 14:15SPEAKER_05: They've had a great year.
- 14:16SPEAKER_05: Sonny Dykes has done a great job.
- 14:18SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, but that's the most good I'll say about them.
- 14:21SPEAKER_04: I think like if this was Baylor, I think I'd be saying a little, I think I'd be acting a little differently.
- 14:27SPEAKER_04: Uh because yeah, I dislike Baylor in a rivalry sense more than TCU, personally.
- 14:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's true.
- 14:33SPEAKER_05: I still wouldn't root for them.
- 14:35SPEAKER_05: I don't think.
- 14:35SPEAKER_05: I mean, we have some good buddies, like our buddy Joe Goodman.
- 14:38SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, no, absolutely.
- 14:38SPEAKER_04: Uh you know, Joe would encourage this.
- 14:40SPEAKER_05: So it's true, that's true.
- 14:42SPEAKER_05: Well, and Joe also kind of roots for tech too, like when we're playing different.
- 14:45SPEAKER_05: So yeah, I've definitely lightened up on Baylor, uh, much more than the show.
- 14:49SPEAKER_04: Oh, oh, yeah, the parents give me things, yes.
- 14:51SPEAKER_04: But like I feel more of a a rivalry with Baylor than I do TCU generally with me.
- 14:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:57SPEAKER_05: So I, you know, it was uh I think it's a fan-based thing.
- 15:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's definitely a fan-based thing.
- 15:02SPEAKER_05: Who you know, who uh your family members, who's bigger, like all that kind of stuff.
- 15:07SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, good for TCU.
- 15:09SPEAKER_05: They made it, they're playing Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl uh for a chance at a national championship.
- 15:14SPEAKER_05: And uh, I mean that's awesome for them.
- 15:16SPEAKER_05: Uh, do you think they're gonna be competitive in this game?
- 15:19SPEAKER_04: I do, yes, I do.
- 15:20SPEAKER_04: Um, I think they will be.
- 15:21SPEAKER_04: I think Michigan obviously overall is a more talented team.
- 15:26SPEAKER_04: But uh, I'm not saying TCU's gonna win, but I think it's gonna be a game.
- 15:29SPEAKER_04: I don't think it's gonna be a blowout.
- 15:30SPEAKER_04: You know, all these playoff games have been really boring.
- 15:32SPEAKER_04: I don't think this is gonna be one of those.
- 15:33SPEAKER_04: I think this is gonna be actually a really competitive game.
- 15:35SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, people give the Big Ten a lot of credit.
- 15:39SPEAKER_04: And once you like look past, say, you know, Michigan and Ohio State, the conference isn't all that impressive.
- 15:45SPEAKER_04: It's really not.
- 15:46SPEAKER_04: It's it's actually this year, it was actually pretty uh pretty weak year.
- 15:50SPEAKER_04: It was atrocious.
- 15:51SPEAKER_04: It was so overall, it was probably the weakest conference outside the top dogs.
- 15:56SPEAKER_04: So I think Michigan's looking for uh a real challenge here.
- 16:00SPEAKER_04: I mean, they crushed Ohio State, so that gives some credence to you know how they can do, but I think TCU is definitely gonna give it to them.
- 16:06SPEAKER_04: I think TCU will absolutely give them all that they can handle.
- 16:09SPEAKER_05: Do you know uh do you know the who won the Big Ten West?
- 16:14SPEAKER_05: Uh Iowa, I believe, right?
- 16:16SPEAKER_05: No, Purdue.
- 16:18SPEAKER_05: Oh, that's right.
- 16:18SPEAKER_05: That's what I'm saying.
- 16:19SPEAKER_05: Boy Makers won the Big Ten West with a record of eight and four, and then now they're eight and five because they lost the conference championship game.
- 16:28SPEAKER_04: I remember I guess I said Iowa because I think it was like there's this this chance that Iowa could have legitimately been there.
- 16:33unknown: Yeah.
- 16:34SPEAKER_05: No, they yeah, they had they had a chance.
- 16:36SPEAKER_05: I mean, so did Illinois had a chance at doing this.
- 16:39SPEAKER_05: So and so did Minnesota.
- 16:40SPEAKER_05: I mean, they had like the records down, Purdue six and three in conference, and then Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota were all five and four in conference, Wisconsin four and five, Nebraska Northwestern.
- 16:51SPEAKER_04: So the Big Ten West is bad.
- 16:54SPEAKER_04: It's been bad for a really long time.
- 16:56SPEAKER_05: I mean, they're bad, like Penn State was good, Ohio State, Michigan.
- 17:00SPEAKER_04: That's it.
- 17:01SPEAKER_04: It's the east, but it's funny, it's funny.
- 17:02SPEAKER_04: Like you you break down, like, oh, but the east, and then you're like, oh, you know who else is in the east?
- 17:07SPEAKER_04: Rutgers in Maryland.
- 17:09SPEAKER_06: In Maryland, yeah.
- 17:10SPEAKER_04: And Indiana like an Indian, yeah.
- 17:12SPEAKER_04: So it's just it kind of makes you laugh.
- 17:14SPEAKER_04: Where it's it's that that conference, more so than the SEC, suffers from top-bottom like heaviness uh syndrome.
- 17:23SPEAKER_04: So it's it's it's really it's really funny that way.
- 17:25SPEAKER_04: It's just it's really just I think people just really lean, lean on the pass, how they like you know, it's one of the first college football conferences that really mattered and yeah, you know, Michigan and Ohio State.
- 17:35SPEAKER_04: But no, I like I said, dude, I think TCU's gonna give them all they can handle.
- 17:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think so too.
- 17:39SPEAKER_05: I I don't think I don't think TCU's gonna bow down by any means.
- 17:42SPEAKER_05: I don't think Michigan's gonna beat them by 30.
- 17:45SPEAKER_05: Um TCU showed a lot of guts, even in that Kansas State game, man.
- 17:48SPEAKER_05: I mean, Max Duggan looked like he was ready to just crawl on the floor and die and and do something.
- 17:55SPEAKER_05: Uh yeah, that guy, I mean, I have so much respect for him personally.
- 17:59SPEAKER_05: Um, but it's if you told me at the beginning of the year that Max Duggan would be in New York for the Heisman finalist as it like with the potential to really win that thing, yeah.
- 18:11SPEAKER_05: I would have I think so.
- 18:13SPEAKER_05: I I'm not sure how the voting ended up.
- 18:15SPEAKER_05: I just know Caleb Williams won it, but um no, I would have said you're insane.
- 18:20SPEAKER_05: I wonder what the betting odds were on Max Duggan making it to New York.
- 18:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 18:25SPEAKER_04: That that's it totally, man.
- 18:27SPEAKER_04: I I think that kind of wraps up TCU's season.
- 18:29SPEAKER_04: It's like what the hell's happening here?
- 18:30SPEAKER_04: But yeah for them.
- 18:31SPEAKER_05: I mean, yeah, good for them.
- 18:32SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm still not ready.
- 18:34SPEAKER_05: One day, but yeah, yeah, but good for them.
- 18:36SPEAKER_04: But I mean, it's it's not even TCU that's like all over the moon right now.
- 18:38SPEAKER_04: Kansas State won the Big 12 championship, like they added a trope to their case, and it's been over 25 years, and we haven't done that yet.
- 18:45SPEAKER_04: So I just it's just I'm ready, man.
- 18:49SPEAKER_04: I'm so ready.
- 18:50SPEAKER_05: Holy let's talk, let's talk about Kansas State because they're up next.
- 18:53SPEAKER_05: They're playing in the Sugar Bowl, they're playing number five Alabama.
- 18:56SPEAKER_05: Uh, this this is great for Kansas State that you win the Big 12 championship, you beat previously undefeated TCU.
- 19:03SPEAKER_05: You're going now to prove it against Nick Saban in the Sugar Bowl.
- 19:07SPEAKER_05: Great matchup.
- 19:08SPEAKER_05: Awesome for Kansas State.
- 19:09SPEAKER_05: They, I mean, you switch quarterbacks midway through the year.
- 19:12SPEAKER_05: Will Howard ends up being a gamer, and you know, uh Kansas State uh Kleiman has surpassed all of my expectations.
- 19:21SPEAKER_05: Like, I thought Chris Kleiman was a good coach before this year.
- 19:24SPEAKER_05: I thought he was a really solid head coach.
- 19:26SPEAKER_05: He's one of the best coaches in the conference for doing this.
- 19:30SPEAKER_04: Oh, I mean, unbelievable.
- 19:32SPEAKER_04: No, I'm 100% with you.
- 19:33SPEAKER_04: Uh, I'm with you.
- 19:34SPEAKER_04: I I I thought Kansas State was always going to be good, you know, with with Chris Kleiman.
- 19:40SPEAKER_04: Like, they're always gonna be a team that had it put together, you know.
- 19:43SPEAKER_04: Like there wasn't gonna be like any real detriment on that team, but I didn't think it was gonna be Bill Snyder.
- 19:48SPEAKER_04: I guess Bill Snyder is one of the greatest football coaches of all time.
- 19:50SPEAKER_04: And here you are losing a living legend, and you're replacing him with, you know, an FCS coach.
- 19:57SPEAKER_04: You know, he doesn't know big ball, big boy ball yet, but it translated perfect.
- 20:01SPEAKER_04: You know, it's like it's this, he's like, it's the same sport.
- 20:03SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna do what I do, and he did.
- 20:04SPEAKER_04: And um, I'm very impressive.
- 20:06SPEAKER_04: A team that's easy to root for, um, a guy that's easy to root for.
- 20:11SPEAKER_04: And I think this is a great matchup for them.
- 20:13SPEAKER_04: I really think this is a 50-50 ball game looking at it here.
- 20:16SPEAKER_04: And it's it's hard to count out Nick Saban, but the way Kansas State's playing right now, they're on the up.
- 20:20SPEAKER_04: They're playing hot right now, and I think they're gonna give Alabama a real tough match.
- 20:25SPEAKER_05: Well, and with a program like Alabama, when you don't make the playoff, then all of a sudden you get all these NFL players that are future NFL players are now gonna bow out of the bowl game to get ready for the draft.
- 20:35SPEAKER_05: And so they're automatically gonna be, I don't know how many players it is, but it's gonna be a good amount because Alabama puts out 10 NFL players every single year.
- 20:43SPEAKER_05: So you imagine they're not gonna have their full roster.
- 20:46SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, their players are just not psyched to be there because their goal was the playoff and a national championship.
- 20:53SPEAKER_05: And Kansas State for the season that they had for the ups and downs, they are high.
- 20:59SPEAKER_05: They are real high right now.
- 21:01SPEAKER_05: Going off a Big Twelve championship, getting anybody is psyched to play Alabama.
- 21:05SPEAKER_05: Anybody can get up when you're matched up against Alabama.
- 21:07SPEAKER_05: So I think Kansas State's gonna give them how I mean I I think Kansas State should actually be favored in this game.
- 21:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, like I said, 50-50.
- 21:15SPEAKER_04: I really feel 50-50 on this.
- 21:16SPEAKER_04: It's just yeah, it's hard to look at an Alabama team with Nick Saban at the helm and say that they're gonna lose.
- 21:21SPEAKER_04: Like it's that's impossible to say.
- 21:22SPEAKER_04: The best you can say it's 50-50, in my opinion, with them.
- 21:25SPEAKER_04: Um, but I'm absolutely with you.
- 21:27SPEAKER_04: It Kansas State has the advantage of playing Alabama, and obviously, no knock on a Kansas State, Kansas State and Texas Tech, and all like the majority of us as fans in college football are in the Kansas State bin.
- 21:35SPEAKER_04: Um, but you know, whenever you're playing Alabama, obviously your team's gonna get up.
- 21:38SPEAKER_04: And whenever you're an Alabama fan, and whenever you're an Alabama player, if you're not in the playoff, it's a huge disappointment for you.
- 21:43SPEAKER_04: And it's that's well earned, but it's gonna come back back and bite you, and I think that's what's gonna happen in this bowl game.
- 21:48SPEAKER_04: And the funny thing is they're gonna be a little played off.
- 21:50SPEAKER_04: Oh, they just they were sad they didn't win the SEC, they were sad they were in the playoff.
- 21:54SPEAKER_04: I mean, screw all that bullshit.
- 21:56SPEAKER_04: I hate that so much.
- 21:57SPEAKER_04: It's just an excuse to say that you know, maybe you're not.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: Think you are.
- 22:01SPEAKER_04: So I really hope I obviously I'm I'm a big ol' emaw of that night.
- 22:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah, go case state.
- 22:07SPEAKER_05: Hope they beat the tide pretty good.
- 22:10SPEAKER_05: Um next up, uh Longhorns, Longhorns playing uh number 12 Washington in the Alamo Bowl.
- 22:17SPEAKER_05: This I believe is the fourth time in the last six bowl trips that Texas has played in the Alamo Bowl.
- 22:22SPEAKER_05: Uh they're very familiar with this.
- 22:24SPEAKER_05: San Antonio, ton of Longhorn fans.
- 22:27SPEAKER_05: Um yeah, I I don't really have much to say about this.
- 22:31SPEAKER_05: You knew Texas was gonna be here like three weeks ago.
- 22:34SPEAKER_04: What sucks is I think UT will win.
- 22:36SPEAKER_04: You know, yeah.
- 22:38SPEAKER_04: I'm going for the Huskies, obviously.
- 22:40SPEAKER_05: But so he so here's the thing like Washington's quarterback, Michael Penix, has already announced that he's coming back for next year.
- 22:46SPEAKER_05: So they're going to have him.
- 22:47SPEAKER_05: You know, UT, I don't know if Bijan's playing in this game.
- 22:51SPEAKER_05: I don't know if I don't know if a lot of other players are considering entering the transfer portal.
- 22:56SPEAKER_05: There's rumors Xavier Worthy is looking at doing that.
- 22:59SPEAKER_05: There's rumors that uh some people have already popped in from Texas, like some O-linemen, some uh some other skill position guys, and um with the whole QB situation, I just don't know if Ewers Ewers hasn't responded very well to when he doesn't have one of his go-to guys.
- 23:17SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and if Bijan is not playing in this game and going directly to prepare for the NFL, like he probably should, uh Texas is in a real hole here, and Washington has already they have their quarterback coming back, they have a bunch of other guys coming back.
- 23:32SPEAKER_05: So I don't know.
- 23:32SPEAKER_05: I would uh I mean, obviously, Texas has the home field advantage here.
- 23:35SPEAKER_05: There's a ton of Longhorn fans in San Antonio, they're gonna show out for this one.
- 23:39SPEAKER_05: They're happy to be in a bowl game, they're happy to not be five and seven, despite despite UT fans having a higher expectation of what their team should be.
- 23:46SPEAKER_05: But um, yeah, I think this is gonna be a pretty even matchup, to be honest.
- 23:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, I I I didn't think it was gonna be like, you know, uh, obviously this is UT.
- 23:54SPEAKER_04: I just I just think that UT will prevail, um, especially if there's some surprises on who plays and who doesn't.
- 24:01SPEAKER_04: Uh obviously, I hope Huskies win.
- 24:03SPEAKER_04: I mean, I'm all about that W that night.
- 24:05SPEAKER_04: Uh, and like we already talked about how they're in full force, and that's a good sign, but still you're right, it's a short trip.
- 24:11SPEAKER_04: You got a lot of fans there.
- 24:12SPEAKER_04: Uh they might be pissed off that they barely missed out on the championship.
- 24:16SPEAKER_04: Um I still think that UT's gonna win.
- 24:19SPEAKER_04: I hope they don't.
- 24:20SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna go Huskies win this one.
- 24:22SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna think we're gonna.
- 24:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I just don't I don't think you were showed enough to do it without Bijan.
- 24:28SPEAKER_05: And they relied so heavily on Bijan at the end of the year.
- 24:32SPEAKER_05: So it's I don't know, man.
- 24:34SPEAKER_04: It's so funny how Uers was gonna be the God's gift to football.
- 24:38SPEAKER_04: And obviously when the tech he is, but what I'm saying is is like, you know, this here's this guy, you know, the highest-rated quarterback ever, whatever, out of high school.
- 24:47SPEAKER_04: And UT thinks that this guy's gonna obviously just step on a field and win everything for them.
- 24:51SPEAKER_04: And now ET fans have completely turned on him.
- 24:54SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah.
- 24:55SPEAKER_04: They think that he's like poo-poo, and they think that Arch Manning's actually the one that's going to be the real one.
- 25:02SPEAKER_04: So I just love the cycle that UT has to go through every single season.
- 25:08SPEAKER_04: It's amazing.
- 25:09SPEAKER_04: Obviously, there's varying degrees of it every season, but oh my god, is it delicious?
- 25:14SPEAKER_04: It's just amazing.
- 25:15SPEAKER_04: It's great.
- 25:15SPEAKER_04: It's so nice.
- 25:17SPEAKER_04: It's really nice.
- 25:17SPEAKER_04: It really is.
- 25:18SPEAKER_04: God, it's so nice.
- 25:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and who won our game?
- 25:21SPEAKER_05: Uh, I believe I believe Texas Tech won that game.
- 25:24SPEAKER_05: I believe it was the Red Raiders.
- 25:25SPEAKER_04: It could be, it could just be me misremembering, but I believe and the reason why tech tech lost is because Uers was hurt, but Uwers is also bad.
- 25:32SPEAKER_04: Oh, but he was yeah, but remember that one half against Alabama.
- 25:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, exactly.
- 25:38SPEAKER_04: Hey, you know, they barely lost to Alabama, so um, had Uers been healthy, but he's also bad, they would have been tech.
- 25:45SPEAKER_04: So that's true.
- 25:46SPEAKER_05: Did you did you also see Arch Manning's uh, I guess, state championship game in high school?
- 25:51SPEAKER_05: No, he was awful.
- 25:53SPEAKER_05: Was he?
- 25:53SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah, he went against the like nine schools.
- 25:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he went for like well, first off, you look at any arch manning tape, and this has already been said, but any arch manning tape, he's playing against eighth graders, like dude plays against nobody, and I guess he went to the state championship and he threw like two picks and went like nine for 25 and his team got blown out.
- 26:12SPEAKER_05: But I I think Arch Manning is gonna be fine.
- 26:14SPEAKER_05: I think he's gonna be a good player, but uh he may be a little overrated.
- 26:18SPEAKER_04: But I mean, at least with Quinn, like he played 6'8 football in Texas, and that's like a really big deal.
- 26:25SPEAKER_04: Um, while yeah, this, you know, this obviously no fault of him.
- 26:27SPEAKER_04: You know, he comes to this wealthy family that's gonna send him to wealthy schools and play much lesser competition because you know it's not exactly a large pool of athletic kids.
- 26:38SPEAKER_04: So yeah, yeah, no, it's funny.
- 26:40SPEAKER_05: All right, you ready to get pissed off?
- 26:42SPEAKER_05: Yes, all right, cheese it bowl, cheese it bowl.
- 26:47SPEAKER_05: Um the Oklahoma Sooters are playing the uh 13th ranked Florida State Seminals in the Cheese It Bowl.
- 26:55SPEAKER_05: Um all right, let's just start out by saying I wasn't very upset at this.
- 27:03SPEAKER_05: I get it, is what yeah, is it frustrating that Oklahoma gets uh you know gets the nod over a bunch of other more deserving teams?
- 27:15SPEAKER_05: Sure.
- 27:16SPEAKER_05: But it you know, you should have saw it coming.
- 27:18SPEAKER_05: I mean, everybody should have saw it coming.
- 27:20SPEAKER_05: Of course they're gonna take Oklahoma over a Texas Tech or a Baylor or uh uh Oklahoma State.
- 27:25SPEAKER_05: Um they don't deserve it.
- 27:27SPEAKER_05: I don't I but okay.
- 27:30SPEAKER_05: I'll I'll just let it what do you think?
- 27:32SPEAKER_05: What do you think of the little cheese it thing?
- 27:33SPEAKER_04: I'm upset.
- 27:34SPEAKER_04: I would have rather had the cheese at bowl than Texas Ball full full stop, as the kids say.
- 27:38SPEAKER_04: Uh, because you know, Oklahoma's gonna go up against number 13, Florida State, who actually put together a pretty good year.
- 27:45SPEAKER_04: And they they they're they've won nine games.
- 27:48SPEAKER_04: We've won seven.
- 27:49SPEAKER_04: How many did Oklahoma win?
- 27:50SPEAKER_04: Six.
- 27:51SPEAKER_04: So it's it, I feel, I feel for our fans that are frustrated that you know, after the our best year in a decade, we didn't get to go to the better goal, better bowl than say uh Oklahoma's worst team in a decade.
- 28:06SPEAKER_04: So I I totally get that.
- 28:08SPEAKER_04: I would have rather had a had a shot at a ranked team, a rat, you know, a highly ranked a powerhouse, a Florida State, you know, rather than an old miss, you know, a middling SEC team.
- 28:19SPEAKER_04: I mean, that's not a knock on them.
- 28:20SPEAKER_04: I mean, we're a middle-ing Big 12 team, it's what we are, but like I it's just frustrating because you know, we we shock all these expectations while Oklahoma does nothing but disappoint and they get rewarded for better than we are.
- 28:31SPEAKER_04: And it's that's that's frustrating no matter how you look at it.
- 28:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I get it.
- 28:35SPEAKER_05: I get it.
- 28:36SPEAKER_05: Um I get to go to the bowl game that we got.
- 28:40SPEAKER_05: A lot of our fans now get to go to the bowl game that we got instead of if it was in Orlando.
- 28:45SPEAKER_05: Um, I feel for the the the guys on the team that wanted this trip because apparently they did.
- 28:52SPEAKER_05: Um, apparently it's like it's it's much cooler to go to Orlando, I guess.
- 28:56SPEAKER_05: Uh I can't be world stadium is a shithole.
- 29:00SPEAKER_05: So I if you've ever been there, it's a nightmare.
- 29:03SPEAKER_05: Uh I, you know, I'm not like enthralled by the whole Disney idea, but you know, so for me personally, I wanted the Texas Bowl because now I can go to the game and actually be there.
- 29:14SPEAKER_05: I wouldn't have gone to the game if we got the Cheese It Bowl, I would have been watching it on TV.
- 29:18SPEAKER_05: But so yeah, maybe it's a selfish reasons I wanted the Texas Bowl more, but I also think we're gonna have more fans there.
- 29:26SPEAKER_05: We're our fan base is gonna care more, you know.
- 29:29SPEAKER_05: It's gonna be, it's uh I think we have a better chance at winning the Texas Bowl versus um having to go, you know, to the Cheese It Bowl.
- 29:36SPEAKER_05: But I I do feel for because we were more deserving, we deserved this bowl game more than Oklahoma did, and so did Oklahoma State, and so did Baylor.
- 29:45SPEAKER_05: So, you know, it's just it is what it is.
- 29:49SPEAKER_05: This is how college football works with brands, they will always take the brand when they get the chance, and that's unfortunate, but it kind of is what it is, and I don't know if I'm just better at accepting that or uh or what, but that's why I'm not so upset at this draw.
- 30:05SPEAKER_04: I think at the end of the day, this is a more fun matchup for us against Ole Miss, um, because we're in Houston, you know, it'll be hopefully mostly tech fans, but um, you know, Mississippi isn't so far away, so you know they're they get the drive-in as well, and it's a fun clash of personalities.
- 30:21SPEAKER_04: You know, you have Lane Kiffin versus Joey McGuire, two very charismatic coaches, so that's that's very fun as well.
- 30:27SPEAKER_04: And you know, two fun teams, you know, and I think, like you said, I think we have a better chance at beating the rebels than we do the Seminoles.
- 30:35SPEAKER_04: I think I I think the Rebels had a pretty soft schedule overall, and you know, weren't really tested to uh to to get to where they are, but you know, I'm glad we get to get in there and uh, you know, and hopefully top off an eight-win season.
- 30:49SPEAKER_04: So I'm really excited about it.
- 30:50SPEAKER_04: I wish I could be there, um, but it's it's gonna be it's gonna be great to see.
- 30:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I guess we just talk about it now.
- 30:58SPEAKER_05: Um, yeah.
- 30:59SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm excited for this matchup.
- 31:01SPEAKER_05: Um, Ole Miss probably isn't this isn't the bowl game that Ole Miss wanted.
- 31:05SPEAKER_05: You know, they were pretty highly ranked for a lot of the season, and then they kind of you know trailed off towards the end there.
- 31:11SPEAKER_05: Um, but I'm excited to play Ole Miss.
- 31:14SPEAKER_05: I would have been excited to play Florida State.
- 31:16SPEAKER_05: I'm excited to play all these as long as it's a power five opponent, I'm thrilled.
- 31:20SPEAKER_05: You know, playing Lane Kiffin is fun.
- 31:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um, I it I think our guys are excited about it.
- 31:26SPEAKER_05: Um, we've only had a few players that we'll talk about enter the transfer portal that won't play in this game.
- 31:30SPEAKER_05: Obviously, you're not gonna have Tyree.
- 31:32SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, so I think we have a good chance at really winning this game and getting a dub over another SEC team.
- 31:38SPEAKER_05: And that to me is really fun.
- 31:40SPEAKER_05: And so it's gonna be really fun, man.
- 31:42SPEAKER_05: I I think we'll win.
- 31:43SPEAKER_04: I do.
- 31:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think it'll be a good matchup.
- 31:46SPEAKER_05: It'll be fun.
- 31:46SPEAKER_05: Um, let's just let's hit quickly on on these other three.
- 31:50SPEAKER_05: Uh, Liberty Bowl, Kansas, Arkansas, good for Kansas.
- 31:54SPEAKER_05: Good for Kansas.
- 31:55SPEAKER_05: I just feel good for Kansas.
- 31:56SPEAKER_05: They made a bowl game.
- 31:58SPEAKER_05: Uh, they weren't as good as everybody thought they were after they started off 5-0, 6-0.
- 32:02SPEAKER_05: So that all stopped.
- 32:04SPEAKER_05: Um, maybe they have a chance of beating an SEC team here.
- 32:07SPEAKER_05: Would be hilarious if Kansas goes and beats Arkansas.
- 32:10SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, good for Kansas.
- 32:12SPEAKER_05: If they go and beat Arkansas, that's an SEC, the Big 12 beating an SEC team.
- 32:17SPEAKER_05: I hope it happens.
- 32:18SPEAKER_04: It's not just okay, it's not just a Big 12 team beating an SEC team, though.
- 32:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's Kansas beating an SEC team, you know.
- 32:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, our our worst team, our embarrassment, you know.
- 32:28SPEAKER_04: So that that'd be awesome.
- 32:30SPEAKER_04: And like I said, it would have been funny to see it that the big rivalry return between Kansas and Missouri.
- 32:35SPEAKER_04: And all I see from this is AM dodging UT in tech and bowl games with Missouri doing this, you know, not one, you know, leaving the conference and entering the SEC and just trying to separate themselves from the Big 12, thinking they're they're bit bigger and better.
- 32:50SPEAKER_04: But I mean, out of all the teams, Missouri is not an SEC team.
- 32:54SPEAKER_04: So it's so it's it's just hilarious to see them do this.
- 32:57SPEAKER_05: Um, but dude, an SEC team ducking a Big 12 team in a bowl game.
- 33:02SPEAKER_04: Classic.
- 33:03SPEAKER_04: But um, no man, I think that's I think this is a fun matchup, and I think that Kansas, you know, Kansas uh can actually you know pull it off.
- 33:10SPEAKER_04: I bet they can.
- 33:11SPEAKER_04: Um we'll see because I think they'll be way more up for it than the Razorbacks because it's the first time in over 10 years Kansas has done this, so I think they're gonna really bring it.
- 33:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, well, and if they got Jalen Daniels, and you know, I I don't think any of those Kansas guys are ducking for the NFL anytime soon.
- 33:27SPEAKER_05: So uh I they should have their whole team, I think.
- 33:30SPEAKER_05: Uh, but yeah, hopefully, you know, hopefully the Jayhawks pull it out.
- 33:33SPEAKER_05: Um, these two teams kind of got screwed.
- 33:36SPEAKER_05: Um, it sucks to get the draw that they got.
- 33:39SPEAKER_05: Oklahoma State, uh, I guess it's better for Oklahoma State than Baylor, but Oklahoma State playing in the guaranteed rape bowl against Wisconsin.
- 33:47SPEAKER_05: So they're at least playing a power five team, and then Baylor in the Armed Forces bowl playing Air Force.
- 33:53SPEAKER_05: Um can't feel good if you're Baylor right now.
- 33:58SPEAKER_04: No, not at all, man.
- 33:59SPEAKER_04: Uh, that's that's a tough matchup, man.
- 34:01SPEAKER_04: Like that's uh it I mean I think Baylor will win.
- 34:04SPEAKER_04: Um Air Force put together a pretty good year, though.
- 34:07SPEAKER_04: They won nine games um in the Mountain West there, but yeah, I mean, I feel like this has to be a Baylor win.
- 34:12SPEAKER_04: If you lose, that's that's uh tough.
- 34:15SPEAKER_05: Well, this is that's it's shades of uh of what year was that 2017 Texas Tech?
- 34:20SPEAKER_05: Yep, where we go and play USF and then lose USF, yeah.
- 34:23SPEAKER_04: Sorry.
- 34:24SPEAKER_05: Oh, USF of that bowl.
- 34:25SPEAKER_05: Oh god, what was that?
- 34:27SPEAKER_04: The Birmingham Bowl of that was kind of the end of Cliff Kingsbury, wasn't it?
- 34:31SPEAKER_04: That was the last year, wasn't it?
- 34:33SPEAKER_04: Was that did we fire him after that game?
- 34:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that was that was the last that was because that was Shimonek, and then no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 34:40SPEAKER_05: He had one more year after that because he had um he had McLean, Carter, and Bowman.
- 34:46SPEAKER_05: That's right.
- 34:46SPEAKER_05: That's right.
- 34:47SPEAKER_05: So yeah, that was the second election.
- 34:48SPEAKER_04: Still there our entire college career.
- 34:50SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah, no, you're right.
- 34:52SPEAKER_04: That's very that's also thinking the same thing.
- 34:53SPEAKER_04: It's very similar in that sense.
- 34:55SPEAKER_04: Um, but it's even like it's even stranger because you know they just won the Big 12 championship, and they're they were one of the favorites to win the conference again, and it just did not roll that way.
- 35:04SPEAKER_04: They had a very disappointing year in the grand scheme of things.
- 35:06SPEAKER_04: They finished below us, haha.
- 35:08SPEAKER_04: But I mean, uh yeah, I I I don't think Baylor's gonna just win no matter what, but it's a game they should.
- 35:15SPEAKER_05: Well, and this is so this ties into kind of something that I want to talk about a little bit here before we get to like roster like transfer portal and all that.
- 35:23SPEAKER_05: So TCU extended Sonny Dykes, um, as most would think that they would after making the playoff.
- 35:29SPEAKER_05: Um, Baylor just did the same thing with Dave Aranda.
- 35:32SPEAKER_05: Uh, after winning the Big 12 championship, they go and extend him um and give him you know multiple years on this.
- 35:39SPEAKER_05: The very next year, Dave Aranda goes six and six and is pretty disappointing, all things considered.
- 35:45SPEAKER_05: Um, these huge extensions that these colleges are so quick to jump on, they cannot be good for your program.
- 35:55SPEAKER_05: This is why I know Joey Maguire had a great year.
- 35:58SPEAKER_05: I'm excited for the future.
- 36:00SPEAKER_05: Don't it don't give Joey Maguire a six-year extension right now because who knows?
- 36:06SPEAKER_05: Every everything's different, everything's different.
- 36:09SPEAKER_05: You know, everything could have come together for TCU this year, and then Sonny Dykes loses all these good players, and they're five and seven next year.
- 36:16SPEAKER_05: Who's to say?
- 36:16SPEAKER_04: So playing with G pad players, yeah, exactly.
- 36:19SPEAKER_05: He's not playing with his own recruits.
- 36:21SPEAKER_05: He yeah, sure, they entered the transfer portal and they got a lot of good guys from the transfer portal.
- 36:24SPEAKER_05: TCU did this year, but um, you know, this is just kind of a testament to how good of a coach what does one year really say how good of a coach this coach is.
- 36:35SPEAKER_04: I get what you're saying, dude.
- 36:37SPEAKER_04: But if this if Texas Tech was in this position, we would be throwing the wall, we'd be throwing the the house at him.
- 36:43SPEAKER_05: So it's you have to see that's bitten us in the butt before with Kingsbury.
- 36:48SPEAKER_04: Kingsbury was a mistake, like I mean, not not hiring him, but the the extension was a mistake.
- 36:54SPEAKER_04: It was a little too premature, it really was.
- 36:58SPEAKER_04: But but the the the randah and dykes extensions aren't really premature because they they went and did something your school never does, and that's uh if if Tech Tech had a coach that came in and immediately won a big 12 championship, I say you lock him down for life, and you would too.
- 37:14SPEAKER_05: I think we all would, because we've never done it before, and yeah, but I mean starving for it.
- 37:19SPEAKER_05: This stuff makes me reconsider it because it's like it's it's it's like, dude, like I know six and six isn't a bad year by any means, like it's fine, you know.
- 37:28SPEAKER_05: But there's uh there's an expectation once you hit that mark that you need to kind of stay in that general range, you know, and this is well below what people thought Baylor were gonna be.
- 37:37SPEAKER_05: Six and six, people were thinking Baylor was gonna win 10, 11 games and potentially be a playoff contender.
- 37:43SPEAKER_04: So, you know, this is a disappointing year, but he's allowed to have those now, he's allowed to disappoint every once in a while.
- 37:51SPEAKER_04: That's that's how I feel about Texas Tech.
- 37:53SPEAKER_04: I'm with the way the way I look at Texas Tech is I want a coach that takes us bowling every single year, no excuses.
- 37:59SPEAKER_04: And then every once in a while, I want to make a real shot at the Big 12 championship.
- 38:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but outside of that, I am satisfied with seven to nine wins every year.
- 38:11SPEAKER_05: I am.
- 38:12SPEAKER_05: Oh, I am too.
- 38:14SPEAKER_05: I am too.
- 38:15SPEAKER_05: It's just the it's just really a problem with the universities jumping on it so quick and being like, we had one good year, so we're gonna extend this guy for the next six to seven years.
- 38:25SPEAKER_05: And it's like, well, I mean, the these weren't your players, you know.
- 38:28SPEAKER_05: You yeah, you made the playoff, you've been a great coach this year.
- 38:31SPEAKER_05: Let's kind of see how it goes.
- 38:33SPEAKER_05: And like, I understand you got to freaking extend Sonny Dykes after he goes to the college football playoff.
- 38:37SPEAKER_05: Like, I get it.
- 38:38SPEAKER_05: You have to extend Dave Aranda after you won a Big 12 championship.
- 38:40SPEAKER_05: I get it, but it uh it's not always the smartest investment, is what I will say.
- 38:46SPEAKER_04: No, I think that's I think that's fair.
- 38:48SPEAKER_04: I think you're kind of looking at this uh as a conservative sort of viewpoint here about not really wanting to just lean into it, you know, kind of play play it, you know, by here.
- 38:57SPEAKER_04: And I get that, but it's I cannot blame these universities for doing it because these are not powerhouses we're talking about.
- 39:04SPEAKER_04: We're talking about teams that are in the same boat as Texas Tech, and they've just had much better luck with hiring the right guy, and we just haven't gotten that lucky yet.
- 39:12SPEAKER_04: So once we are that lucky, I would want us to go crazy.
- 39:15SPEAKER_04: I mean, and we've done that with our other coaches too.
- 39:17SPEAKER_04: Like look at Tim's Adlock, look at uh you know, other basketball coaches we've had.
- 39:21SPEAKER_04: You know, we've really tried to just lock them down because they're successful here and they're exceeding the expectations that we had before.
- 39:29SPEAKER_04: So I I get it.
- 39:30SPEAKER_05: I I think it's hard to blame them for sure, and especially with the random being in a lot of like the coaching hunts, you know, last year and and dikes will be the same in the same boat for a lot of these.
- 39:41SPEAKER_05: So I get it.
- 39:42SPEAKER_05: It's it's a weird balance you gotta keep.
- 39:43SPEAKER_05: You almost have to, you're almost forced to give them the extension.
- 39:46SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 39:47SPEAKER_04: Yes, you have to you have to make it crazy for other schools to come and take them.
- 39:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, like that can also that can also screw that can also screw a TCU, a Baylor, a Texas deck in future if you do that.
- 39:59SPEAKER_05: You know, what do you mean?
- 40:00SPEAKER_05: It could all it could screw you over because you could have one good year with another guy.
- 40:03SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay, and then you're just mediocre or bad for the rest of the time.
- 40:07SPEAKER_04: Powerhouse coming and taking them.
- 40:08SPEAKER_04: Well, like, well, then you're loaded and going yeah, um high, maybe higher within, maybe go and get another T.
- 40:15SPEAKER_05: Who's to say?
- 40:15SPEAKER_05: I'm not saying Baylor needs to fire Dave Aranda.
- 40:18SPEAKER_05: I'm just saying that this is a disappointing year and this is kind of uh, you know, Baylor shouldn't expect to be in the Big 12 championship every year.
- 40:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, for sure.
- 40:25SPEAKER_04: That's what I'm saying.
- 40:26SPEAKER_04: That's an I think I think generally Baylor and TCU fans will have that same sort of opinion I just said.
- 40:31SPEAKER_04: You know, when are you look at you know a rational fan?
- 40:34SPEAKER_04: They said, you know, bowl game every year, good, you know, above seven wins is great, and uh run at the Big 12 championship every once in a while.
- 40:41SPEAKER_04: I don't think you'd make meet a single rational Baylor or TCU fan that says you got to win it every year.
- 40:45SPEAKER_04: So um that's that's how I feel about tech.
- 40:48SPEAKER_04: I I'm but I'm ready for that you know, real shot to actually start coming into play because we haven't had that real discussion since Mike Leach that you know we're gonna have that real shot to get into the Big 12 championship.
- 40:59SPEAKER_04: And I'm ready for that to happen.
- 41:00SPEAKER_04: Tech's fully capable of doing it.
- 41:02SPEAKER_04: If TCU Baylor can do it, we can too.
- 41:04SPEAKER_04: We kind of really uh went off topic here on on uh talking about this sort of thing.
- 41:08SPEAKER_04: And uh before we move on, I want to just say that I think that we are really safe with Joey McGuire as staying at Texas Tech.
- 41:16SPEAKER_04: Um, not saying that he's gonna be, you know, he's for sure the superstar he's we think he's going to be, but in the sense that I think he does have a real loyalty to the school now.
- 41:24SPEAKER_04: I mean, I I maybe I am just drinking his Kool-Aid, and that's absolutely possible.
- 41:28SPEAKER_04: But when he says I will die at Texas Tech, I'm kind of inclined to believe him, you know.
- 41:33SPEAKER_05: He's got the family, he's got the family connections, he's obviously got those Texas connections, so he probably wants to stay in Texas, you know, and it it makes sense.
- 41:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 41:41SPEAKER_04: And it's a power pipe job.
- 41:42SPEAKER_05: You're at the top of the level in Texas in the state of Texas, so yeah, and I think I think Joey understands that we have a real chance here with OU and UT leaving to become a consistent contender here, even with them here.
- 41:55SPEAKER_02: He did the first thing ever at Texas Tech.
- 41:57SPEAKER_05: It's true.
- 41:58SPEAKER_05: It's true, it's true.
- 42:00SPEAKER_05: So, all right, man.
- 42:01SPEAKER_05: I think that's enough bull talk, enough of whatever contracts and whatever tangent we just went on.
- 42:06SPEAKER_05: Real off topic there.
- 42:08SPEAKER_05: Let's talk about Texas Tech, uh, because this is a Texas Tech podcast.
- 42:12SPEAKER_05: Um, we have had to this day, what is today?
- 42:16SPEAKER_05: The It's the 11th.
- 42:18SPEAKER_05: It's the 11th.
- 42:20SPEAKER_05: As of December 11th, we have five players in the transfer portal, uh, four of which were not huge contributors.
- 42:27SPEAKER_05: Um, so I'll kind of rally those off real quick.
- 42:29SPEAKER_05: Derrick Lewis, linebacker, uh junior, he's in the transfer portal.
- 42:33SPEAKER_05: Drew DeArman, who was a true freshman last year, or this year, I should say.
- 42:37SPEAKER_05: Um, he's also a linebacker.
- 42:39SPEAKER_05: Tavaris Elston, also a true freshman, also a linebacker.
- 42:43SPEAKER_05: Um, and then Amari Jones, who I don't I don't even think he was technically on the on scholarship on a roster.
- 42:50SPEAKER_05: Uh, he was a Lubbock kid, committed to tech real late in one of the Matt Wells years, and was I I don't know if he was just like uh a walk-on type player, but he entered the transfer portal, he was a DB.
- 43:01SPEAKER_05: Um the linebackers, the amount of linebackers that have already entered the transfer portal is a little weird considering we're losing Krishna Merriweather and Kosai Eldridge, two of the starters on last year's team.
- 43:15SPEAKER_05: Um, and it's weird that the true freshmen are entering uh already, especially with a lot of opportunity in my eyes coming up for linebackers at Texas Tech.
- 43:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's that's it, that's what's really weird to see so much exodus from one single position.
- 43:30SPEAKER_04: Like that's just that's just odd because you if you saw some other guys leaving that position, you would think as a player, you would have a better shot of getting more minutes.
- 43:40SPEAKER_04: And that's what obviously all these guys want.
- 43:43SPEAKER_04: So that makes me scratch my head, especially at a position where we've been quite successful, uh, generally speaking, for the last 10 years.
- 43:50SPEAKER_04: Um, it really makes me wonder like what the what the future of the position is like there.
- 43:53SPEAKER_04: What's the what's the coaching situation like there at the position?
- 43:56SPEAKER_04: Um, I'm just it just makes me confused.
- 43:58SPEAKER_04: What are you seeing?
- 43:59unknown: Well.
- 44:00SPEAKER_05: Well, we just also have to consider that sometimes these guys are phased out and sometimes by Texas Tech, by the coaching staff.
- 44:06SPEAKER_05: They either don't see the potential that they thought they did, or they don't really see a future for them as a linebacker at Texas Tech.
- 44:13SPEAKER_05: So, you know, they have a private conversation and say, Hey, we think it might be best that you transfer.
- 44:18SPEAKER_05: That those kind of conversations do happen.
- 44:20SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 44:21SPEAKER_05: Um, and so, you know, when you're looking at the true freshman, maybe they just didn't quite see what they thought they saw in high school recruiting.
- 44:30SPEAKER_05: And so, um, you know, they could potentially say, Hey, I th we think it's best if you move on.
- 44:35SPEAKER_05: And that might be the case.
- 44:36SPEAKER_05: I think that's the case.
- 44:37SPEAKER_05: Derek Lewis was hurt all year, he didn't really play much.
- 44:40SPEAKER_05: Um, he he could have potentially carved a role for himself.
- 44:44SPEAKER_05: I think he played pretty well on special teams the last couple of years at tech, but um, you know, that he could have been one of those where it's just and and it's gonna be curious where these guys end up because if they end up at USF or at you know UTSA or Sam Houston State or something, it's like clearly they weren't ready to play in the power five.
- 45:01SPEAKER_05: And so um, yeah, that's that's part of it.
- 45:04SPEAKER_05: Um, I I just thought it was weird considering there's gonna be a lot of uh a lot of opportunity at the linebacker next year.
- 45:10SPEAKER_04: Well, hopefully we have a solution to that.
- 45:12SPEAKER_04: Hopefully it's it's yeah, we got some some dudes that are really ready to step up and and fill that role where we kind of expect a lot from now.
- 45:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah, for sure.
- 45:20SPEAKER_05: Um, all right, let's talk about it.
- 45:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah, let's get it.
- 45:24SPEAKER_05: I was so sad, but I knew it was happening, but I was still so sad.
- 45:28SPEAKER_05: Uh Donovan Smith uh has entered the transfer portal.
- 45:31SPEAKER_05: He is looking for a new home, uh, as he probably should, um, considering the quarterback situation at Texas Tech.
- 45:38SPEAKER_05: Um this makes me so sad because I think Donovan Smith is a power five starting quarterback.
- 45:50SPEAKER_05: Um I know he had his ups and downs this year.
- 45:53SPEAKER_05: I know he had some turnover issues, he had his fair share of problems, but I I just love the guy and I see the talent and especially the way we used him towards the end of the year in certain packages.
- 46:06SPEAKER_05: Like you can really see that Donovan Smith can be a player, yeah.
- 46:11SPEAKER_05: Um, and a really good one.
- 46:12SPEAKER_05: And I I he's got all the intangibles to make it happen, and it's it's gonna suck because he's gonna be good at his next stop.
- 46:20SPEAKER_05: I truly believe that he's gonna be good at his next stop.
- 46:22SPEAKER_05: And I just hope it's not somebody that um we play and that we're gonna have to see, but you know, there's already rumors swirling about Houston.
- 46:31SPEAKER_05: But what are your what are your thoughts about Donovan?
- 46:33SPEAKER_04: Is it weird for me to say I'm I'm happy about it?
- 46:36SPEAKER_04: Because I'm happy about it on two two fronts here.
- 46:39SPEAKER_04: One, I'm happy for the guy.
- 46:41SPEAKER_04: This guy deserves to start at QB.
- 46:45SPEAKER_04: And it's just unfortunately, I just think we have two guys that are better built for the Kitley system and are overall just probably better arms.
- 46:54SPEAKER_04: Um, not necessarily better quarterbacks, but they're better arms, I think.
- 46:58SPEAKER_04: Um, and that's that's what I'm happy for.
- 47:01SPEAKER_04: I'm happy to see this guy go and get his real shot, especially if he goes somewhere that doesn't really interact with Tex Tech.
- 47:06SPEAKER_04: I can't, I'll just be a fan no matter what.
- 47:09SPEAKER_04: Um, and I'm happy, I'm really proud of the way he entered his new position at TexTech.
- 47:15SPEAKER_04: I think he actually accepted that quarterback package role really well because he obviously played his butt up and made it happen.
- 47:22SPEAKER_04: I mean, he had what as many touchdowns against OU as as Shuck did, you know, so in the same game.
- 47:29SPEAKER_04: So he really accepted that role and did what was best for the team, you know.
- 47:33SPEAKER_04: The quarterbacks get this rap of being, you know, more selfish, self-exorbed guys.
- 47:37SPEAKER_04: You kind of have to be to be a quarterback.
- 47:40SPEAKER_04: Um but it's good to see him move on and go get his real shot.
- 47:45SPEAKER_04: I'm also happy for Texas Tech.
- 47:47SPEAKER_04: I think this makes our quarterback situation more approachable.
- 47:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think you're not trying to keep as many guys happy, which is a good thing.
- 47:55SPEAKER_04: Um, I think this allows you to focus in on the guys you actually want to, and it kind of just really takes away that quarterback controversy another step um to make things a little more easy to manage for a guy like Kitley.
- 48:09SPEAKER_04: And I think that's a good thing for the program to really be able to narrow it down to a guy that's going to lead the team.
- 48:15SPEAKER_05: Yeah, for sure.
- 48:16SPEAKER_05: You everything you said is true.
- 48:18SPEAKER_05: Um, it's it's best for both parties.
- 48:21SPEAKER_05: I know that.
- 48:21SPEAKER_05: I just know Donovan Smith has potential to be really, really good.
- 48:24SPEAKER_05: And there's this weird subset of Texas Tech fans on Twitter that despise Donovan Smith.
- 48:32SPEAKER_05: And I don't get it.
- 48:34SPEAKER_05: Like I I I quote tweeted like the transfer pool news, and I was just like, I'm sad.
- 48:38SPEAKER_05: I hate this.
- 48:39SPEAKER_05: I you know, I wish Donovan could have worked out here, you know, he's a talented kid.
- 48:43SPEAKER_05: And there's just like, oh well, or I was like, it was it was the Houston rumor.
- 48:47SPEAKER_05: That's what it was.
- 48:48SPEAKER_05: There's a rumor that he's like talking to the Houston coaches and is uh potentially gonna end up at University of Houston.
- 48:53SPEAKER_05: And I was just like, I would hate playing a conference game against Donovan Smith.
- 48:56SPEAKER_05: And there's this like group of tech fans that wants to come in and says, Well, I would love it.
- 49:01SPEAKER_05: He's gonna throw three picks.
- 49:02SPEAKER_05: Well, I would love it.
- 49:03SPEAKER_05: He's gonna like do make so many mistakes and be awful, and Texas Tech's gonna win by a million if Donovan Smith's the opposing quarterback.
- 49:10SPEAKER_05: And it's like, all right, everybody, you got a little too much animosity for the kid, uh, for a guy that was thrown in the fire here to play some a really difficult schedule.
- 49:20SPEAKER_05: You play a uh NC State in Raleigh, you play Kansas State in Manhattan, like you play Texas.
- 49:26SPEAKER_05: So yeah, guy had kind of a difficult, uh, a difficult road to be successful here.
- 49:31SPEAKER_05: Um, I just kind of it's it's mostly I think it's mostly the Baron Morton stands that are like that, uh, that wanted to see Baron Morton start after Shuck went down initially, and they just won't get over it.
- 49:42SPEAKER_05: And every mistake Donovan made, they piled on him.
- 49:45SPEAKER_05: So, you know, for that group, whatever.
- 49:47SPEAKER_05: I hope Donovan succeeds as long as he's not an Aggie or a Longhorn.
- 49:51SPEAKER_04: Oh, absolutely.
- 49:52SPEAKER_04: Well, I don't know.
- 49:54SPEAKER_04: I I kind of get it.
- 49:55SPEAKER_04: If he goes to Houston, it will stay because we will be playing him, and he will he will be the competition, he will be a rival, you know.
- 50:01SPEAKER_04: So yeah, it's just I I I do not like that thought.
- 50:05SPEAKER_05: I guess I'm just I'm used to Texas Tech players transferring to Houston, so it's just another one.
- 50:09SPEAKER_04: It's a different situation now.
- 50:11SPEAKER_04: I know.
- 50:11SPEAKER_04: And before I didn't even like it before, like I wasn't a huge fan of them going to U of H.
- 50:16SPEAKER_04: And I I just I don't want it to happen, especially now.
- 50:19SPEAKER_04: But I'm with you, dude.
- 50:20SPEAKER_04: I wanted to be successful anywhere.
- 50:21SPEAKER_04: It's just it's hard.
- 50:22SPEAKER_04: I we're we are human, we are fans, we're on we're irrational.
- 50:26SPEAKER_04: So if they go to a uh a rival, it will hurt.
- 50:29SPEAKER_04: And he uh it's kind of like a Kevin McColler situation or a uh um uh Kyler Edwards going to U of H.
- 50:38SPEAKER_04: So it it's just it hurts.
- 50:40SPEAKER_04: So and I don't like that.
- 50:41SPEAKER_05: It's a situation by situation.
- 50:42SPEAKER_05: I hope he doesn't end up at U of H either.
- 50:44SPEAKER_05: I hope he goes to like some Big Ten or to BCC or Pac or something.
- 50:49SPEAKER_05: I yeah, I hope he does something different and stays away where we won't play him.
- 50:52SPEAKER_05: Uh, but yeah, good luck to Donovan.
- 50:54SPEAKER_05: Uh, wish him the best, um, unless he ends up at one of the schools I don't like.
- 50:58SPEAKER_05: So we should mention players returning for Texas Tech.
- 51:03SPEAKER_05: This was we do have some bad news with Donovan leaving and with some other players leaving, but we have two huge returners for 2023 that just announced well that announced it in the past week, and both on the defensive line.
- 51:16SPEAKER_05: Tony Bradford and Jalen Hutchings are both coming back for their last year of eligibility for Texas Tech in 2023.
- 51:24SPEAKER_05: Huge.
- 51:26SPEAKER_05: Huge, dude.
- 51:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah, this is awesome to have a Timber Tim to Ruder defense that was already impressive, and to have this kind of veterancy that's coming back to really lay keep that foundation and building on it to really keep this defensive momentum we've gathered going.
- 51:42SPEAKER_04: Uh, so I'm really happy about it.
- 51:44SPEAKER_05: Well, and the the great thing about it is because if these guys did not come back, our defensive line was going to be new, like brand spanking new.
- 51:54SPEAKER_05: Like you obviously you're getting another year of uh a data ray who ended up being really, really good this year.
- 51:59SPEAKER_05: I was really thrilled with how he developed, especially after Tyree went down.
- 52:03SPEAKER_05: Um but you know, besides those guys, you were gonna have to play uh a sincere Massey, these true freshmen last year that didn't play this year because they were trying to keep their maintain their redshirt and everything.
- 52:14SPEAKER_05: And we had enough depth on the defensive line that it didn't matter.
- 52:17SPEAKER_05: But um Yeah, it's like getting these guys back and getting those younger guys another year to develop and potentially play a little more now that guys like Tyree are gonna be gone, you know, Videl Scott's gonna be gone because of eligibility.
- 52:29SPEAKER_05: So um just having that senior leadership for next year on that unit is going to be so massive.
- 52:36SPEAKER_05: And these guys are good players, they're really solid.
- 52:38SPEAKER_05: Like they're not, you know, Tony Bradford's not a world beater at defensive line, but he's absolutely a solid option.
- 52:44SPEAKER_05: Jalen Hutchings, I think, is one of the best nose tackles in the Big 12.
- 52:48SPEAKER_05: So um, you know, I'm thrilled with these guys coming back.
- 52:51SPEAKER_04: Absolutely, man.
- 52:52SPEAKER_04: And it's like I like I said, it's just it's just good to have the leaders and have these guys that have been through multiple phases of Texas tech, you know, and understand the school through and through now and be able to instill that into the new players coming in and instill this new culture that I think Tim Druder is doing a really good job with.
- 53:08SPEAKER_04: So I I it's just it's just great to have the younger guys have dudes to look up to.
- 53:12SPEAKER_04: So it's it's just it's just a good thing all around.
- 53:15SPEAKER_05: No doubt.
- 53:16SPEAKER_05: Lead your locker room and uh play some damn good football.
- 53:18SPEAKER_05: So excited for these two to come back.
- 53:20SPEAKER_05: Uh Bryce Ramirez also announced that he's coming back.
- 53:23SPEAKER_05: Everybody knows Bryce from the terrible leg injury that he suffered in the NC State game.
- 53:28SPEAKER_05: I don't know what the timetable is on that.
- 53:30SPEAKER_05: I don't even know if he's gonna be okay to play next season, but um, you know, he he announced he's coming back, which is great because he's a leader.
- 53:37SPEAKER_05: He's uh, you know, everybody gets behind Bryce, and um, I think he can be a good player.
- 53:41SPEAKER_05: It's just uh I don't know the severity of that recovery and everything like that, but uh cool to see him come back.
- 53:47SPEAKER_04: Well, I like the live feed of the of Bryce during the football games.
- 53:51SPEAKER_05: Do that all the time.
- 53:52SPEAKER_04: I don't know how they stopped.
- 53:53SPEAKER_04: I would like I would like the the live feed of him on the football field instead.
- 53:57SPEAKER_04: So it's true, it's true for sure.
- 53:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but uh good to good to see him back.
- 54:01SPEAKER_05: He's one of those outside linebackers that play the same kind of position that Tyree did.
- 54:05SPEAKER_05: So um, you know, uh, and hopefully you get a guy like Josiah Pierre coming back because he's gonna be one of your real dudes next year with Tyree being gone.
- 54:13SPEAKER_05: So um, those are the only three as of December 11th that have announced that they're coming back.
- 54:19SPEAKER_05: Um, we have had two.
- 54:21SPEAKER_05: What's that?
- 54:22SPEAKER_05: More to come.
- 54:22SPEAKER_05: More to come.
- 54:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 54:24SPEAKER_05: And more that are gonna enter the transfer portal, too.
- 54:26SPEAKER_05: So just be ready for it.
- 54:28SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, from this episode to our next episode, there's gonna be a ton of change up, and that's just how college football is.
- 54:33SPEAKER_05: Um, but as of right now, we have two players that have announced for sure they are not returning after this year that did have an extra year if they wanted it.
- 54:41SPEAKER_05: Um, Weston Wright, offensive lineman, um, played uh left guard uh for Texas Tech these last couple of years, played right guard for, you know, but he's a a solid option at the offensive line that was uh very up and down, uh mostly down this year.
- 54:56SPEAKER_05: Uh he has announced he is going to test the NFL draft waters after the bowl game.
- 55:02SPEAKER_05: And uh our guy Trey Wolf as well uh has announced he is not coming back uh to for his super senior year, his extra COVID year.
- 55:10SPEAKER_05: So uh gonna have to get a new kicker for next year.
- 55:14SPEAKER_04: Man, the Trey Wolf experience was something this year, man.
- 55:18SPEAKER_04: It was and it was a fun, it was a great time.
- 55:21SPEAKER_04: It was it's so funny how he was the guy that beat U T and OU.
- 55:25SPEAKER_04: Like it was him, you know, he was the one that like slid the dagger right in.
- 55:29SPEAKER_04: And yeah I it's it's gonna be sad to see him go.
- 55:31SPEAKER_04: He was just he he really became a reliable option, uh, generally speaking.
- 55:35SPEAKER_04: And it's it's you you you just you just take kickers for such an advantage, you just take them for granted so much, you know.
- 55:42SPEAKER_04: And hopefully we got a guy that's gonna fill in that role pretty well because we might be coming down the wire next year, you know, having to get that field goal for the win again.
- 55:49SPEAKER_04: So um we I guess tech really likes those guys now, like Jonathan Garbe doing the last minute, last second uh dub.
- 55:56SPEAKER_04: So hopefully we get a guy that can fill that role again.
- 55:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's probably looking like Gino Garcia, uh guy we brought in from I believe Houston Christian.
- 56:03SPEAKER_05: Um he he's coming in.
- 56:05SPEAKER_05: Formerly Houston Baptist.
- 56:06SPEAKER_05: Formerly, formally known as Houston Baptist.
- 56:09SPEAKER_05: Um no, Gino kind of got in.
- 56:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it was a true competition until the wire at the beginning of the year for Trey Wolf or Gino.
- 56:16SPEAKER_05: So obviously, Gino's shown some stuff.
- 56:18SPEAKER_05: Um, I don't know, we'll see.
- 56:20SPEAKER_05: Hopefully, it's hopefully it's another solid kicker.
- 56:22SPEAKER_05: We've had two in a row.
- 56:23SPEAKER_05: Let's make it three, man.
- 56:24SPEAKER_05: Special teams, special teams, please.
- 56:27SPEAKER_05: We need a we need a good kicker.
- 56:28SPEAKER_05: Trey Wolf.
- 56:30SPEAKER_05: Props to Trey Wolf, props to Weston Wright, too.
- 56:32SPEAKER_05: Really solid players through their time at Texas Tech.
- 56:35SPEAKER_05: Um, really happy to have them and uh wish them best in their future NFL careers, man.
- 56:41SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 56:42SPEAKER_05: All right, you want to talk recruiting?
- 56:44SPEAKER_05: We can talk recruiting.
- 56:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we just got news today.
- 56:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we we just got yeah, we just got news today.
- 56:49SPEAKER_05: Uh apparently a 2023 ty uh recruit, uh Tyler Johnson, an offensive lineman, decommitted from tech and committed to Auburn.
- 56:57SPEAKER_05: But we also saw on Twitter, and I don't know what your brother just sent us, but it could be who the recruit actually is.
- 57:04SPEAKER_05: Um, it's not.
- 57:07SPEAKER_05: It's probably another offensive lineman.
- 57:09SPEAKER_05: So I don't know, man.
- 57:10SPEAKER_05: It sucks to lose a guy.
- 57:12SPEAKER_05: Uh, he was a four-star recruit.
- 57:14SPEAKER_05: This Tyler Johnson kid uh leave for Auburn.
- 57:17SPEAKER_05: Um, but what are kind of your your thoughts?
- 57:22SPEAKER_04: It's frustrating because obviously we want more good players on their line.
- 57:25SPEAKER_04: That was one of our biggest issues this past season.
- 57:27SPEAKER_04: And it's also frustrating to lose a player you've been recruiting for a long time to a guy that just got hired, you know, a sleaze ball that just got hired um at Auburn.
- 57:37SPEAKER_04: And it just frustrates you that maybe this kid was just like, uh, maybe I just want to go play for an SEC school just because, you know, hashtag SEC.
- 57:43SPEAKER_04: And that's just really frustrating for a Texas tech, you know.
- 57:46SPEAKER_04: And it's it's you have this recruiting class that's got a lot of momentum, you know, you're padding on these uh this high rate, this high ranking, getting these four stars in that just doesn't normally happen at our school lately.
- 57:57SPEAKER_04: And to see us just lose it on a whim to a first year coach that's like barely even in the door, um, that is you know not a great reputation, it's just frustrating, man.
- 58:05SPEAKER_04: And it's like, is it it's just it kind of like reinforces the idea when it comes to recruiting, the last coach in the door to off to offer has one of the best chances to land it because it's the newest, it's the most exciting, you're towards the end.
- 58:19SPEAKER_04: Um, and it's just really frustrating, man.
- 58:21SPEAKER_04: It's just you just feel like you had him, and now it's just just to any old SEC school.
- 58:28SPEAKER_04: It's just mad, it's just maddening.
- 58:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and you know, it's it's it's what we shouldn't be surprised by it, in my opinion.
- 58:36SPEAKER_05: Uh really we why you because of the state of our programs.
- 58:40SPEAKER_05: I think we're on an upward trajection, but we still only won seven games this year.
- 58:43SPEAKER_05: We haven't won more than seven games in what however many years.
- 58:47SPEAKER_05: You know, Auburn has been to a national championship in the 2010s.
- 58:51SPEAKER_05: It's you know, it's and they're an SEC school.
- 58:54SPEAKER_05: They're the SEC in the Big Ten are always going to get the recruits.
- 58:59SPEAKER_05: They are.
- 59:00SPEAKER_05: Uh now the same thing happened with Calvin Simpson Hunt.
- 59:04SPEAKER_05: We were upset, we got on early, Joey was the first guy to really give him a good look, and he committed, and now he's committed to Ohio State.
- 59:11SPEAKER_05: Those are always gonna happen, in my opinion.
- 59:13SPEAKER_05: You're not gonna keep you're gonna start keeping these guys once you consistently win a lot of games.
- 59:21SPEAKER_05: So once you win nine, 10, potentially even 11 games, and you make those NY6 bowls, that's when you're gonna start keeping these type of players.
- 59:31SPEAKER_05: But as soon as Auburn calls, I mean, Baylor has this issue too, you know, uh TCU has this issue too, but once they have made their, you know, mark, look at Baylor basketball.
- 59:42SPEAKER_05: Baylor basketball gets a five-star freaking recruit every year now because they won the national championship.
- 59:47SPEAKER_05: They were not doing that before.
- 59:49SPEAKER_05: But once you win, once you have that one unbelievable year, or you, you know, consistently go to NY6 bowls or consistently go to really good bowl games and you win eight games, nine games, that's when you're gonna keep these guys.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_05: You're not gonna keep these guys with the state of the program right now.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_05: I think Joey's doing a great job of billing.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_05: I think we're gonna be in a good spot two years from now, but you're not gonna keep these guys right now.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_04: Well, I mean, yeah, I like I I agree with you, yeah, but it's frustrating because Auburn didn't have that year.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_04: That's not what happened.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_04: But they have a boot.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_05: They have the program.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_04: They have the program.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_04: But it's it's just still frustrating because this guy hasn't coached a single game.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_04: And, you know, well, at Auburn, and he's a sleaze ball, and it just sucks to lose a guy to a program that only cares about winning.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_04: And I'm okay, and I mean, obviously, I'm up here on my high horse, you know, saying, like, oh, look at look how perfect Texas Tech is.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_04: You know, we didn't hire a guy that sleeps with co-eds, but still, or in hire prostitutes, and I mean at AM right now, dude, hiring Petrino.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_05: But well, if they do, they haven't done that, that's not official, but yeah, they're looking at it's going to happen.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_04: Um it's just frustrating watching your team lose out to dudes like that because you just wish that you know it didn't have to be that way, but it is.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_04: I you know, I just I hate the SEC.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_04: You know, I'm a Big 12 fan, so obviously I do, but you know, this guy just kind of like reinforces that hatred towards it, especially with what's happening in the realignment and all that.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_04: I know, like I'm just salty, but still I feel like I have a right to be.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_04: Sure, sure, absolutely go for it, man.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, so we we just got a new O-line commit.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_05: So hopefully, uh, you know, it's not too much of a miss.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_05: And we've been Joey recruited the O-line last year.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_05: We got some young guys that are hopefully making uh um a leap next year and potentially being a starter.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_05: We have some returners, we have some uh guys that didn't play, like Cole Spencer, that are gonna hopefully be a um a real piece for you next year on that O-line.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_05: So I'm not worried about losing one guy to Auburn.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_05: Uh, but yeah, the theme of it, the theme of it is uh is a little frustrating.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_05: I'll get I'll get with you on that.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_04: But I think it was also because it was an O-line man.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, just like God, we need some some studs there, but yeah, for sure.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_05: But we got some good players, Caden Carr and some of these other uh young players are coming in that I think are gonna be really good in the future.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_04: And I think at the end of the day, like you said, you're gonna lose these guys.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_04: This is not gonna be the last four or five-star recruit we're gonna lose.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_05: But the good news is you have a guy that's getting those dudes in the door, so yeah, and they're and they're initially committing, and then yeah, when we start winning these games, they're really gonna stay and they're gonna be like, Yeah, I can win here.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_05: This is uh, you know, we get more future NFL players from Texas Tech, and okay, we understand.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_05: So it's gonna happen, it's just not gonna happen right now, and that's a little frustrating, but it is what it is.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_05: Um basketball.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_05: Um, do you do we want to bring up uh the terrible memory of uh of the last game against Nichols State?
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_05: One and o Don.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_05: What right where we want to be right where we want to be.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_04: Oh you know what you go ahead and and and do this.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_05: You're missing Jalen Tyson.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_05: Um that's a big that's a big player that you're missing for this game.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_05: Uh tech wins 78-71, I believe.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_05: I think we won by seven, six or seven, but it wasn't that close.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_05: No, you well, you were trailing the whole game.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_04: I mean, it wasn't that it wasn't that like, I mean, not that close.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_04: It wasn't that big of a like the score doesn't indicate what it really was.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_04: None of what I'm trying to say.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_05: Nichols State should have beat us.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_04: Yes, that's what I meant.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_05: Nichols State should have beat Texas Tech in basketball this year.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_05: Um that game was so unbelievably frustrating to watch.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_05: Uh, you were missing Jalen Tyson, um, who, by the way, is not injured.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_05: It's not a serious injury.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_05: He's supposed to play against Eastern Washington this coming Tuesday.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_05: So uh, you know, you don't have to worry about that.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_05: But um abysmal offense um for the majority of that game.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_05: Um everybody not named Pop and Kevin uh don't seem to be uh contributing from the outside.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_05: Um you know, really you had four guys played well in this in this nickel state game, and that was it.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_05: The others were bad to just non-existent.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_05: Um Bacho has been consistent, he's been awesome.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_05: Uh Kevin in the first half, Kevin O'Banner was brutal.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_05: Uh defensively, for some reason, he is just not there either.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_05: Uh, he's missing assignments, he is not uh putting in effort to get around guys.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_05: Um, but he really carried you there in the second half and led the comeback and did what he needed to do as a senior.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_05: Pop was awesome all game.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_05: He was the guy that won you this game for the most part.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_05: Lamar knocked down some crazy free throws at the end that you're just thankful.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_05: Um but overall, I think what you saw and what you've seen from this Texas Tech basketball team so far this year is you have a really, really, really bad depth issue on this team.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_05: You don't have past your five, you don't have a guy that is stepped up in the way they need to step up and be a consistent player for you.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_05: Um I thought that was gonna be a Kerwin Walton.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_05: I thought that was gonna be a Demarion Williams, I thought that was gonna be uh one of the other freshmen potentially, or a KJ Allen or something, but you don't have anybody right now that I feel good about coming off the bench, and that's terrifying, uh, especially when you start getting into Big 12 play and you start playing good teams every night.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_05: And I I know we're gonna get Dawes back, I know we're gonna get Jalen Tyson back, but man, when you're not confident in one guy off the bench, it's scary.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I don't want to spend too much time on this because it just I think you know because I'm a believer in you're allowed to have a game like this.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_04: Sure.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_04: Um, especially if you lose if you win.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_04: Uh our guys, we like you said, we should have lost and we really clawed back and won.
- 1:05:59SPEAKER_04: Uh Um, and I just think it was an off night.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_04: I I I think you have plenty of time to still kind of get things right before we start digging into the schedule.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_04: Um, so uh while our our you know anxieties are valid, I still have faith in the team to get it right.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_04: It just the thing is, is we just may not have the season we had last year, and that's just not gonna happen every single year.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_04: Not gonna you're not gonna be making a sweet 16 every year, and I think you're out of your gourd if you think that's what's happening to happen.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_04: So I trust our program, I trust us to get it right.
- 1:06:32SPEAKER_04: And like I said, I can excuse this game because we won.
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_04: Had we lost, I think we could absolutely tear into the team, but it took a grit to claw back, you know, any given night, especially in a sport like basketball, this could happen.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_04: So it's just I'm glad we we we did what you had to do and win.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_04: But you know, the anxieties are there and they're valid.
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think I I'm I'm usually in your thought, in like the thinking the same way you are when you know a team's allowed to have a bad game against a bad team.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_05: It happens all the time.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_05: You know, we saw it earlier.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_05: Oklahoma's Oklahoma lost Sam Houston State, TCU lost to uh who was it, the Northwestern State or something.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_05: So, you know, teams have had bad games and bad outings, and it's the beginning of the year, and you have some guys out, but man, it's like the guys that I wanted to see step up this game just didn't, and were and instead of they weren't even like they weren't even just eh, they were bad.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah, Demarian Williams was bad, you know.
- 1:07:31SPEAKER_05: Kerwin came and get on the floor, Elijah Fisher gets benched after two minutes for making a couple mistakes, and that's another frustrating thing for me after watching this.
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_05: Is um okay, I'll bring it up now.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_05: Um we've had players transfer out of this basketball program.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_05: Um, good players that have transferred.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_05: Um you know, we're seeing Kevin McCullough at Kansas right now, we're seeing Namari Burnett at Alabama right now, starting for uh a team that just took down number one.
- 1:08:01SPEAKER_05: Uh, we're seeing Terrence Shannon average almost 20 points a game uh at Illinois.
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_05: We're seeing Buzo start and play really well at Boise State right now.
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_05: You're telling me we couldn't use one of those guys right now?
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_05: You know, that to me is so frustrating seeing four really good players that were on your team that are now not on your team because of decisions that we have made in the past.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_05: Sometimes they're good decisions, sometimes they're not.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_05: I I just don't see a a situation, and it could just have been the player that just said, hey, I don't want to be here anymore.
- 1:08:41SPEAKER_05: And that's fine.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_05: You know, you can't really prevent that.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_05: But also Namori Burnett, and this is a beard thing, this isn't an Adams thing because Burnett was beard.
- 1:08:49SPEAKER_05: Uh you don't play him a lot.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_05: He's a five-star freshman.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_05: You probably should give him some minutes, you know, to make him happy for the future of your program because we see the potential of this kid be really good.
- 1:09:01SPEAKER_05: And and if and I know Adams doesn't run his program, I know Beard doesn't run his program that way, to where you're just kind of you know giving handouts to the freshmen because they're highly recruited and they could be something in the future.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_05: But if they're not adding to your team now, like I understand, but it's really frustrating seeing like a guy like Buzo not be on this team or Kevin McCullough not be on this team, and uh Burnett, same deal.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_05: And I feel like that same exact thing right now is happening with Elijah Fisher, and I hate it.
- 1:09:34SPEAKER_05: Um I know Elijah's not there yet as a player.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_05: I know he's not, but you know who else isn't there yet?
- 1:09:41SPEAKER_05: Damarian Williams.
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_05: You know who else isn't there yet?
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_05: Kerwin Walton, uh KJ Allen, these guys that are playing.
- 1:09:48SPEAKER_05: Robert Jennings, like uh Robert Jennings has been really good this year.
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_05: Um I shouldn't have said Robert Jennings, but to me, Elijah needs chances to make mistakes.
- 1:10:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah, why are you keeping him on the bench for the majority?
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_05: You're you be he played like two minutes against Nichols State.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_05: This is a team that you need to play these young players so they get some run and they have some faith in your program to play, you know?
- 1:10:20SPEAKER_05: So if like if Elisha Fisher transfers halfway through this season, like Namari Burnett did, I would understand because you're not playing, you're not even getting an opportunity.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_05: And to me, when you have this young of a team and you don't have reliable options otherwise, why wouldn't you play him more?
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_05: Why wouldn't you give him more run?
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_05: So that has frustrated me too.
- 1:10:47SPEAKER_04: So you're afraid of the coaching mismanagement of prioritizing guys you kind of expect to be bench players over stars, like future stars of the program, like Elijah.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_04: Like Elijah, you know, is potentially the best player on your team, right?
- 1:11:00SPEAKER_04: Whenever all said and done.
- 1:11:02SPEAKER_04: So uh you're frustrated with you know, prior to maybe prioritizing guys that may have been on the program longer, so you feel a sense of allowing him to have that chance over guys that you're gonna be able to do.
- 1:11:13SPEAKER_05: It's not even guys that are in the program longer, it's like KJ Allen, you know.
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_05: Yeah, well, KJ, sure, but it's no, I see that.
- 1:11:20SPEAKER_04: I said, yeah, and like I said, transfers, you know, guys that you think have the experience over him and trust that experience a little more.
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_04: I'm with you, man.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_04: I don't want to see perhaps coaching mismanagement, and obviously these guys are paid a lot more money and have a lot, you know, know the game a lot better than we do.
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_04: But it's yeah, I sense I see that frustration as well.
- 1:11:38SPEAKER_04: I I don't want to lose guys who are potential superstars, NBA players to well, and and cornerstones of the future of your pro exactly, yeah.
- 1:11:46SPEAKER_05: That's what I mean.
- 1:11:49SPEAKER_05: Okay, so Tristan's laptop died, and uh now he's on his phone.
- 1:11:53SPEAKER_05: So apologies for a little worse audio quality, but we're gonna finish it off here, man.
- 1:11:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely, dude.
- 1:11:59SPEAKER_04: I I'm sorry to the treasure listeners.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_04: They come here because they they join this podcast because of the audio quality.
- 1:12:05SPEAKER_04: We do this in professional studios, soundproofing room, and the microphones from more expensive than our cars.
- 1:12:11SPEAKER_04: So I get the frustration that now it doesn't sound as good.
- 1:12:15SPEAKER_04: I but I'm sorry, y'all.
- 1:12:16SPEAKER_04: I know how frustrating it is to hear a podcast, it's like really echoey and stuff.
- 1:12:20SPEAKER_05: We totally don't just record in our homes on Zoom.
- 1:12:25SPEAKER_06: No, no, with Amazon mics, yeah.
- 1:12:29SPEAKER_05: So, I mean, just to finish it off, I I need Elijah to get a few more minutes because I think this guy could be uh a future piece on a on a team and be a future starter for this Texas Tech team.
- 1:12:39SPEAKER_05: So uh I'd rather see him get minutes uh and play bad over another guy that's getting minutes and playing equally as bad.
- 1:12:47SPEAKER_05: So, you know, uh just just me.
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_05: I don't know, just me.
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_04: Full agreement, man.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_04: Especially when you see a pop isa, it's a true freshman, you know, getting all these minutes as well.
- 1:12:55SPEAKER_04: And I mean, he obviously he was a highly talented recruit as well.
- 1:12:58SPEAKER_04: So you you just I'm absolutely with you.
- 1:13:01SPEAKER_04: I'd rather risk losing the guys that just transferred in or maybe are don't have as high of a ceiling as Elijah to get in, you know, to to replace him like that.
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and I just think real time game time is so important and so crucial for development of a player um that you just need that.
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_05: And so uh yeah, those are the teams that go the furthest in the tournament or the ones that are battle tested.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_05: So yeah, absolutely.
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_05: So uh we have a lot of games coming up that um, you know, uh could potentially be more cupcakes.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_05: I hope I don't see five more nickel state games uh coming up here soon.
- 1:13:35SPEAKER_05: Uh but uh Easter Washington, Jackson State, Houston Christian, and South Carolina State before conference play starts on better.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I want to see some blowouts here.
- 1:13:48SPEAKER_05: Yes, and absolutely we'll yeah, we'll see.
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_05: It could have just been one bad game, and I'm freaking out over nothing.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_06: But that's what I'm thinking.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_04: I think our guys will come out and just crush the rest.
- 1:13:57SPEAKER_04: Because I think it's just like they know they did really poorly, they know more than we do how bad they did.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_04: So that's I think we're gonna come out and see this team come out with some ferocity.
- 1:14:06SPEAKER_05: For sure.
- 1:14:07SPEAKER_05: Um, all right, man, before we end off with uh a Christmas themed song of the week slash movie of the week, uh just wanted to mention Ramblin Raiders are hosting a tailgate at the Texas Bowl.
- 1:14:19SPEAKER_05: Uh, I'm gonna try to be there.
- 1:14:21SPEAKER_05: Um, but for you know, with friends and other priorities, it's it it may be difficult.
- 1:14:25SPEAKER_05: But if you are interested in going to a tailgate at the Texas Bowl, uh reach out to Jackson and them with the Ramblin Raiders uh and get yourself a wristband.
- 1:14:34SPEAKER_05: Uh, we went to the one uh last time they had we had a game against it, it was against Houston at NRG.
- 1:14:41SPEAKER_05: They had another Ramblin tailgate and it was awesome.
- 1:14:43SPEAKER_05: It was a lot of fun.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_05: It was.
- 1:14:45SPEAKER_05: If y'all are interested, make sure to reach out to them for that.
- 1:14:48SPEAKER_05: Um, all right, man.
- 1:14:50SPEAKER_05: We are doing a Christmas themed song of the week because you're not gonna hear from us until after Christmas.
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_05: Um, this is that time of the year we're holly and we're jolly.
- 1:14:59SPEAKER_05: We're also gonna do our favorite Christmas movie.
- 1:15:02SPEAKER_05: So, what do you want to start with?
- 1:15:03SPEAKER_05: You want to start with a movie or song?
- 1:15:04SPEAKER_04: Let's do movie.
- 1:15:05SPEAKER_04: Let's do movie.
- 1:15:06SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, I'm kind of a bit of a scrooge when it comes to Christmas movies.
- 1:15:11SPEAKER_04: Not because I don't like them, but you're you're so pigeonholed with what you can watch.
- 1:15:18SPEAKER_04: You know, you have like a dozen movies to choose from.
- 1:15:21SPEAKER_04: You're you know, you're just like, guys, we watched this last year.
- 1:15:24SPEAKER_04: I mean, and you know, you know what's gonna happen, you know how old and it's not like you can really watch new Christmas movies because usually Christmas movie Christmas Christmas movies are no good.
- 1:15:34SPEAKER_04: Um, and that's why the ones that stick around do, even if they're really not that great of movies, they're just good enough to stick around.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 1:15:41SPEAKER_05: Okay, only because you're kind of coming off as kind of a critic here.
- 1:15:45SPEAKER_05: It's a Christmas movie, it's just for fun.
- 1:15:47SPEAKER_05: You're sitting around with your family, enough to hang around, you know.
- 1:15:51SPEAKER_04: It's um so I yeah, you are a little bit of a Scrooge, a little bit, and the one probably the one Christmas movie I really have no qualms with throwing on every year, it's pretty basic, but it's probably National Lampoons Christmas Christmas Vacation.
- 1:16:06SPEAKER_04: Like it's it's it's a pretty funny movie, it's not obnoxious enough to where you can't stand watching it anymore.
- 1:16:12SPEAKER_04: Um, I I think that's probably my go-to that I'm cool with seeing every year, and whenever it comes to serious movies, I think it's a wonderful life, it's probably the best like serious Christmas movie out there, yeah.
- 1:16:22SPEAKER_04: Um, but when it comes to funny that I can just sit and watch every year, it's Christmas vacation.
- 1:16:26SPEAKER_05: Okay, okay.
- 1:16:28SPEAKER_05: I think a lot of people would agree with you on that.
- 1:16:30SPEAKER_05: Um, I have never seen Christmas vacation.
- 1:16:35SPEAKER_05: Dude, it's never seen it.
- 1:16:37SPEAKER_05: I've never seen it.
- 1:16:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we're we're not a family that that likes to gather around around Christmas and watch movies.
- 1:16:44SPEAKER_05: We usually are watching sports or well, no, I'm just saying we don't like we don't usually watch Christmas movies.
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_05: Like, I'll watch Christmas movies when I'm with the fiance and we're just hanging out on like, I don't know, a Thursday night or something like that.
- 1:16:55SPEAKER_05: But um, I don't dislike Christmas movies.
- 1:16:57SPEAKER_05: I like Christmas movies, uh, but yeah, I've never seen that one.
- 1:17:00SPEAKER_05: Uh, I know it's on it's on the list of movies I haven't seen, which is uh extensive.
- 1:17:05SPEAKER_05: Uh, but my favorite Christmas movie is far and away, Jim Carrey's Grinch.
- 1:17:13SPEAKER_05: Far and away.
- 1:17:14SPEAKER_05: Great pick.
- 1:17:15SPEAKER_05: It's so good because Jim Carrey is like the ultimate Jim Carrey in that one.
- 1:17:21SPEAKER_05: It's it's got like a little bit of everything.
- 1:17:24SPEAKER_05: It's got like the lightheartedness, it's got like the fun, like inappropriate humor for a few scenes, and uh it's just overall his like acting is great.
- 1:17:32SPEAKER_05: He's funny, he's a funny dude, he's a physical actor.
- 1:17:35SPEAKER_05: Uh, it just works.
- 1:17:36SPEAKER_05: Uh, Jim Carrey's Grinch is the best Christmas movie.
- 1:17:39SPEAKER_04: It's you know, it got panned by critics, and you know, whenever we look at it, it is really stupid.
- 1:17:43SPEAKER_04: You know, it's it's just a stupid comedy.
- 1:17:45SPEAKER_04: Um I like stupid comedies.
- 1:17:47SPEAKER_04: Me too, me too.
- 1:17:48SPEAKER_04: Uh, it comes from a time where you know comedies are still pretty good.
- 1:17:51SPEAKER_04: You know, I feel like we've been in a comedy dead zone for a long time now.
- 1:17:55SPEAKER_04: Um, but no, I I think that's a really good one because it's one of those ones that you can quote all year round, you know, whenever like they whenever it calls for it.
- 1:18:03SPEAKER_04: I think a Grinch, real real term Grinch is hilarious.
- 1:18:06SPEAKER_04: Austin, my brother, really turned me on to it lately.
- 1:18:08SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, okay, this is funny as hell.
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_04: So it's it's it's just that really stupid humor where you lose a few brain cells laughing at it, but you're like, okay, it's pretty good.
- 1:18:19SPEAKER_05: All right, it's pretty funny.
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's that's like that's like the Christmas movie I could watch every year.
- 1:18:24SPEAKER_05: It's like when it comes around, I'm like, all right, we can throw on Jim Carrey, I'm cool with that.
- 1:18:28SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, I also like I put Elf Elf is a good one, it's a good one.
- 1:18:33SPEAKER_05: You I have to wait like four or five years before I between elf watches.
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_04: No, elf has gotten a little too much mileage.
- 1:18:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's definitely like it's on like TNT all the time around Christmas, and like everybody played it in school, like for the holidays, and it's just like, okay, I can do without elf.
- 1:18:52SPEAKER_05: I like Will Farrell, I get it, but I can do without elf this year.
- 1:18:56SPEAKER_04: It it's it's safe family humor, it's cute, it's funny, but oh my god, I've probably seen that movie more than pretty much any other movie in my life, just because it's just but that's how Christmas movies go.
- 1:19:05SPEAKER_04: You're like, I that's how I feel about Christmas movies.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_04: It's like, okay, I'm good.
- 1:19:10SPEAKER_04: I know it's it's pretty funny, or it's a pretty good movie, but I'm sick of it.
- 1:19:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I get you.
- 1:19:15SPEAKER_05: All right, man.
- 1:19:16SPEAKER_05: Christmas song, and this is gonna be our song of the week as well.
- 1:19:19SPEAKER_05: What is gotta be?
- 1:19:20SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 1:19:21SPEAKER_05: Are we doing favorite Christmas songs or are we just doing a rec?
- 1:19:24SPEAKER_04: I'm kind of just doing a wreck uh because uh it's hard to pick a favorite Christmas song in my opinion.
- 1:19:29SPEAKER_04: Especially, you know, it's like what do you go with like the good church songs?
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_04: Do you go with a good, you know, uh culture song?
- 1:19:34SPEAKER_04: I it's it's tough.
- 1:19:36SPEAKER_04: But I I I feel like I'm gonna I'm gonna go with a group that I haven't given a whole lot of love lately, or maybe I don't know if I've ever recommended a song probably by them, but uh a mainstream Nashville group that I really really like.
- 1:19:48SPEAKER_04: It's Lady Ann.
- 1:19:49SPEAKER_04: And I think they have a really strong Christmas album.
- 1:19:52SPEAKER_04: And I'm gonna go with a song that probably people wouldn't recommend too much, but I think it's a bop every time it's covered.
- 1:19:57SPEAKER_04: It's Baby Please Come Home.
- 1:20:08SPEAKER_06: Baby Please Come Home.
- 1:20:12SPEAKER_04: Like, I really like that one.
- 1:20:13SPEAKER_04: I think that's a great Christmas song because a lot of artists, it's just usually a really upbeat, you know, and they really pour their heart into it, like singing-wise.
- 1:20:20SPEAKER_04: So I'm gonna go with Baby Please Come Home, Lady Annabelle.
- 1:20:22SPEAKER_04: Or Lady A.
- 1:20:23SPEAKER_04: I'm sorry.
- 1:20:24SPEAKER_06: Lady A, Lady A.
- 1:20:28SPEAKER_05: Good choice.
- 1:20:29SPEAKER_05: Lady A does have a really good Christmas album.
- 1:20:31SPEAKER_05: I will agree with you.
- 1:20:32SPEAKER_05: Um, the Country Christmas albums are goaded.
- 1:20:35SPEAKER_05: It's yes, yeah.
- 1:20:36SPEAKER_05: I mean, unless you're talking like old school, like Bing Crosby or like Booblay.
- 1:20:41SPEAKER_05: Booblay obviously puts a great Christmas album out there.
- 1:20:44SPEAKER_05: Um, but yes, I agree with you.
- 1:20:47SPEAKER_05: My choice is also a country Christmas song, and it's our guy.
- 1:20:50SPEAKER_05: I'm finally going to do it.
- 1:20:53SPEAKER_05: George Strait.
- 1:20:55SPEAKER_05: Let's go!
- 1:20:56SPEAKER_04: You're finally doing it.
- 1:20:58SPEAKER_05: I'm doing it.
- 1:20:58SPEAKER_04: Let's get a safe pass for the Christmas song, too.
- 1:21:01SPEAKER_04: Like it can't be like pans or anything like that.
- 1:21:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah, Winter Wonderland, George Strait.
- 1:21:05SPEAKER_05: It's great.
- 1:21:07SPEAKER_05: It's a great song.
- 1:21:08SPEAKER_05: George rules.
- 1:21:09SPEAKER_05: I don't know how we haven't done a song of the week with him yet.
- 1:21:12SPEAKER_05: We're scared.
- 1:21:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we're scared.
- 1:21:13SPEAKER_05: I'm no longer scared.
- 1:21:15SPEAKER_05: This is the time.
- 1:21:16SPEAKER_05: This is the time to do it.
- 1:21:18SPEAKER_05: Christmas time, George Strait, Winter Wonderland.
- 1:21:22SPEAKER_02: We'll face unafraid, the plans that we made, walking in a winter wonderland.
- 1:21:33SPEAKER_04: Great pick.
- 1:21:34SPEAKER_04: We'll have to pick an episode where we both do like our favorite George songs or like most underrated George songs that'd be yeah, that's a better idea because okay, what are we gonna do?
- 1:21:41SPEAKER_05: All my extra amorillo by morning.
- 1:21:43SPEAKER_05: Like, yeah, no, the people know those.
- 1:21:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we do an underrated one for sure, but that'll be for another time.
- 1:21:49SPEAKER_05: Um, hope all of y'all have a happy holidays, a Merry Christmas, uh, whatever y'all celebrate, have a good time with your families, have a good time with your friends if you go see them.
- 1:21:57SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, you won't hear from us until uh probably the beginning, right before New Year's.
- 1:22:02SPEAKER_05: So uh hope we do well in the Texas Bowl.
- 1:22:05SPEAKER_05: I will be there, uh, maybe provide some Twitter content for y'all.
- 1:22:09SPEAKER_05: And uh, you know, hope you all have a happy holidays.
- 1:22:12SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 1:22:12SPEAKER_04: All Merry Christmas.
- 1:22:14SPEAKER_05: For sure.

- 1:22:57SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm thinking I'm just gonna sit back down.
- 1:22:59SPEAKER_00: This is gonna get any better than this.
- 1:23:02SPEAKER_03: I would like to thank uh Steven and Tristan.
- 1:23:05SPEAKER_03: This is incredible.
- 1:23:06SPEAKER_03: These guys have a passion and a love for this school.
