- 0:29Hello, everyone out in the DC universe. Welcome to another episode of Straight
- 0:33Outta Gotham, episode 141.
- 0:35We are a fandom pop culture podcast and a proud member of the Batman Podcast
- 0:39Network, hosted by BatmanOnFilm.com.
- 0:41Please check out all the other shows associated with the network by heading
- 0:44on over to BOF and clicking the podcast dropdown and giving everyone a listen,
- 0:49even if you really feel the need to listen to the Batman Book Club yet again,
- 0:52because we all know everyone listens to Ryan Lauer and his weird,
- 0:57frolicking obsession for some goddamn reason.
- 1:00Anyway, I am your co-host and senior contributor to Batman on Film.
- 1:05I am Peter Arver, and today we're recording on January 27th, 2024.
- 1:10As always, I have a great show for you today, a little bit different today.
- 1:12It's our Championship Sunday, Eric Holzman Spectacular.
- 1:16And I just want to remind you guys that, because, you know, Eric's the football
- 1:19champion of Long Island, in case you were wondering. That's why.
- 1:22He's the Al Bundy of the Tri-State area.
- 1:24That's it. Hands in his pants, football in hand, ready to run like the Heisman. That's Eric Holzman.
- 1:29We're just praising Eric a little early today because he's shaking his head
- 1:32in confusion. He doesn't understand the introduction, but that's fine.
- 1:34That's why he's on the other side of the glass right now.
- 1:36If you do take the time to rate and review our show on iTunes and we read it
- 1:40on air, you won our Straight Outta Gotham prize pack, so please get it into the contest.
- 1:45Now, let me introduce my partner in crime, the man who wants to bring the XFL
- 1:48to Long Long Island, the champion of Long Island, the president of the Long Island Island fan.
- 1:54I don't know. What is the name of this football club you're going to bring to
- 1:57the island, Eric? Eric Holsman, everybody.
- 2:00What is the name of the football team? It's still being discussed. We haven't decided.
- 2:04You're not really going to call them the Holsey ones, are you?
- 2:06I can't. I tried. Tried to get it passed, but they wouldn't let me.
- 2:11That's interesting. I didn't know the Rock knew of your existence until yesterday
- 2:16when the press release was announced.
- 2:18So good for you i know he just i know the rock just regained
- 2:21rights to his name the rock and he's all about
- 2:24doing his press tour and everything that he's been doing lately he's he's the
- 2:27walking hype machine so i'm excited that uh you two are going to get to collab
- 2:31together if he can't have superman he might as well have aquaman that's what
- 2:34i say that's hey as long as you have a hero and and he you're my hero and he
- 2:39probably wants to forget black adam so it's okay i guess we can,
- 2:42I can kind of slide into that that role I feel like he's announced like rampage
- 2:51to just to get away from black Adam even farther.
- 2:57Well, Pete, you've come out swinging today so far. So I'm ready.
- 3:00Well, you know, I'm very excited for this weekend. There's going to be a lot of Buffalo chicken dip.
- 3:05There's going to be some chicken wings. There's going to be jalapeno poppers.
- 3:09And that's just kind of the warm up for the big food festival in two weeks.
- 3:14That's true. This is kind of the pregame for the Super Bowl,
- 3:18right? This is where you test out your recipes to find out if they suck for Sunday.
- 3:22That's fair. That's a good thing. Or if you want to try anything new,
- 3:25you try it now so that it doesn't break the party, right?
- 3:28Yeah. But yeah, this is championship weekend in the NFL.
- 3:33We have been picking the games every week thus far.
- 3:38I didn't tally up. I think we both got them.
- 3:41Okay. And don't forget, the person who gets the most right picks at the end
- 3:45of the bracket wins a signed Nerf ball by Eric Holzman. Yeah.
- 3:50Yeah, we could do that. I'll do that.
- 3:55It could be it could be one of those special nerfs too
- 3:58that have like the the whatever the tail
- 4:01on the end you know that you throw it makes that noise what were those well
- 4:04that was called the orby i think i don't remember what that was called the orby
- 4:09i once had a nerf football that glow glue in the dark like it had a light in
- 4:13it so i could play at nighttime it worked really well too it was like a neon
- 4:17green football did you say glue in the dark i think it's glowed i,
- 4:22glue glowed i don't know moose mooses like who's english i could be wrong though
- 4:30i could be wrong you're probably right i don't use that word that often so yeah
- 4:35i could be wrong apparently i don't either,
- 4:38Yeah, so Championship Sunday, Chiefs versus the Ravens in the AFC,
- 4:44and we have San Francisco versus the Lions in the NFC.
- 4:48This has been – I think it's cool we have Detroit in there.
- 4:52I think – we talked about this last week, but I think everyone in the country
- 4:56outside of other NFC North teams are rooting for the Lions for the most part in the NFC.
- 5:03And then in the AFC, I think most people want the Ravens just because people
- 5:07are sick of the Chiefs in a lot of respects.
- 5:09I don't think anyone's sick of the Chiefs. I think everyone is sick of everything
- 5:12that surrounds the Chiefs. Well, yeah.
- 5:15But yeah, I think that's the one that we differed on last week that I got.
- 5:18You picked Buffalo and I picked Kansas City. I should have been right, though.
- 5:23I was very close to that damn kicker.
- 5:27Yeah. Buffalo and wide right. It just can't get it.
- 5:32It's never going to go away. Like Florida State. Yep. Never going to go away. That's going to come.
- 5:37But I spoke about other NFC North teams, and we have someone on here who is
- 5:41a representative of one of those teams, the Green Bay Packers.
- 5:44And we're talking about Chris Burke. He's on our show every year around this time.
- 5:48So we want to bring him back again for championship weekend. Chris, man, how are you?
- 5:53Fantastic. You know, obviously, I wish the Packers were playing this weekend.
- 5:56But, you know, I'm going to actually, you know, outside of the NFC North teams,
- 5:59you know, this has been a popular discussion on Packers Twitter,
- 6:02you know, is about are you rooting for Detroit?
- 6:04And every new station in the area has put this up because I realize how much
- 6:08of a hot topic a debate is. Right.
- 6:09And it's pretty strong. It's either, it seems like they're, I don't care or
- 6:14they're rooting for Detroit.
- 6:15And I think a lot of it is just because Detroit's been, you know,
- 6:18they've fallen on such hard times and, uh,
- 6:21There's no bad blood, huh? No, there's not. Not with the Lions.
- 6:24The Vikings or Bears, completely different story.
- 6:26And I think personally, Garrett's going to hate me for this,
- 6:29but I think there's an inherent comedy in the potential of the Vikings being
- 6:32the only team in the division with all the Lombardi.
- 6:35I think, you know, we were talking about that with a friend,
- 6:39like that would be hilarious if the Vikings had been to four Super Bowls they haven't won one.
- 6:44The Lions have never even been to one, and I think that would be utterly hilarious.
- 6:47I mean, they've got a pretty tall, tall, tall climb to get there.
- 6:51But I think I will never let him live it down.
- 6:56You are. Peter, I gave you ammunition. Garrett, I'm so sorry.
- 7:00That's great. I can't wait to use that. I really hope I get a chance to.
- 7:04Yeah. You know, the Packers season obviously didn't even expect a playoff run.
- 7:09It was house, you know, last week we kind of all went to, oh,
- 7:12hey, it's house money. You know, great. They got the one. They blew out the Cowboys.
- 7:15Now I get to apologize to Bill for that. Is he talking to you? Did you guys speak?
- 7:20Not since. We talked a little bit before, but I have not spoken with Bill since.
- 7:26He thought the McCarthy and we talked before the game. He thought a lot of the
- 7:29McCarthy talk about him getting fired was nonsense.
- 7:33But after getting blown out, there was obviously a lot of traction to that. Now he's on.
- 7:39McCarthy's going back, which honestly I think is the right call and props to
- 7:42Jerry Jones for showing some maturity at the age of 85 five or however old he
- 7:46is and not doing that but yeah that's damn maybe that's the right math but,
- 7:50it's skeletal at this point but it's just
- 7:54uh yeah it's it's been a heck of a ride and i think this both are going to be
- 7:57very good games this weekend i agree um let's quickly talk about the packers
- 8:02season since you're here because it like i said it was kind of a pretty much
- 8:06about jordan love right when he started to play better they started to win more
- 8:10it just kind of coincided with with those things.
- 8:14And I'm pretty sure that's what you guys were expecting this year.
- 8:17This is going to be the year where we see if this guy is legitimate.
- 8:21And he was, he was excellent. Like there's no other way to say it.
- 8:25Yes. He threw that terrible interception.
- 8:29Farvian. Yes. Farvian. Yes. Yes. To lose the game, but still they were in the game.
- 8:34I mean, it was right there to be had. Neither quarterback played well,
- 8:38the conditions weren't ideal.
- 8:39Obviously it was rainy and the the ball was slippery and all that stuff.
- 8:43So, but I, if I was sitting in your seat, I would feel encouraged.
- 8:48I would feel encouraged.
- 8:50I, I do. I mean, it's there, there's, you know, they've got a great foundation to build on.
- 8:54They fired their defensive coordinator probably a year too late in my opinion,
- 8:57but better late than never.
- 8:59And I think, I honestly wonder if he would, but you know, if they didn't know
- 9:02Jordan Love was going to be the guy now, they're like, we got a shot at this.
- 9:05Let's change, you know, let's, let's spruce up this defense a little bit here
- 9:08because of our coaching staff.
- 9:10But yeah, he, you know, he, it was a little rough start at the beginning of
- 9:14the year. We knew it was all about evaluating how it was going to be.
- 9:17And I was not even, I'm like, if they even, if they win, If they got to last
- 9:20year's mark of 8-9, I was going to be happy.
- 9:23I would have been fine with that because it's an evaluation season.
- 9:27The way it started, I was a little concerned in the beginning of the year,
- 9:31so let's go through it a little bit if I could. In the beginning,
- 9:34they come out and thump the Bears.
- 9:36I think that was much more about where Chicago was at that point.
- 9:39They were not a good football team earlier on in the year.
- 9:43Go to Atlanta, start fast, fall back and collapse. It's like, okay, young team.
- 9:47Then they were sitting at 3-6 at one point. and what
- 9:49was concerning is you know it's it's one thing to let love go through it
- 9:52but you want to see baby steps of improvement and i literally wasn't seeing
- 9:55a lot of that or so i'm kind of like this is a little we might need to have
- 10:00a conversation here well lo and behold they played detroit ironically enough
- 10:04on thanksgiving yeah utterly just utterly destroyed the lions in detroit and
- 10:08they took off from there that was the last time i rooted for the lions but.
- 10:12Thanks pal appreciate that so no i'm nervous apparently i hate wisconsin according
- 10:16to chris you know Peter does hate Wisconsin I'm a big Christian Yelich fan you watch your mouth,
- 10:23he might not be out here we'll see how he does after the no don't even get me
- 10:27going on the Brewers right oh boy.
- 10:30It just, you know, he, he played well throughout the year. And when they got
- 10:32to the playoffs, it's like, wow. Okay.
- 10:35You know, this is how his money, you know, they got in at nine and eight.
- 10:38And then something, the Cowboys, it's like, you know, I was telling somebody
- 10:41like, don't you want to go to the Superbowl?
- 10:43I said, it'd be great. But like that wildcard game, you know,
- 10:45you walk into a casino and somebody comps you 20 bucks in chips or whatever.
- 10:49You throw something in a slot machine and you win 10 grand.
- 10:52That's kind of how I felt after that Cowboy game. Yeah. And so I'm like,
- 10:55I, you know, I bet after the game against the 49ers, I'm like, why do I feel sad?
- 11:00You know it's it's still like why do they keep doing
- 11:03that to us you know it's one of those where you just don't the thing
- 11:06about the cowboy game because the pack well the packers had that
- 11:09game in hand against the 49ers that's why that love interception they could
- 11:12have wrapped that game up much sooner yeah but you know the thing about the
- 11:16cowboy game that really threw me off was that every network hyped up the legendary
- 11:21rivalry of cowboys packers and we got a dud like i was so So in my head,
- 11:27I'm hearing inside the NFL and the marching music,
- 11:32and I'm thinking of the ice ball. Ice ball, yeah.
- 11:35And then all of a sudden, you get to, what is it, midway through the first quarter,
- 11:39it's like 30-0, and I'm like, oh, this is not what I wanted.
- 11:43Something epic, and I wanted a showdown.
- 11:45That was the best game I think Matt LaFleur has called since he's been there.
- 11:50That might be a little bit of a hot take, but he was in his bag that game,
- 11:54and that just showed, that they're going to be a force to be reckoned with.
- 11:58This is not even a rebuild now. The next year, I can't wait for the NFC North
- 12:02next year. I think it's just going to be a wide open battle.
- 12:04It was very Yankees of you to just retool, not really rebuild in a sense. Yeah.
- 12:12Everything wrote on pretty much how Jordan Love was going to play.
- 12:16I mean, that's... Quarterback in the NFL is the position, obviously.
- 12:20It's one of the positions in all sports. So...
- 12:24When you have one, you're in better shape than when you don't.
- 12:27It's just that simple. God knows that.
- 12:29And this is the 2023 New York Jets. I know that very, very well.
- 12:34Not just 2023. I could go back and talk about many years.
- 12:39But it's when you think you have one and then the football gods rip it away.
- 12:43I know. That hurts. I know.
- 12:45Chris, I want to ask you now, what was it like for you as a Packer fan to watch
- 12:52Rodgers just crash and burn through the first game.
- 12:55And then what is it now like for you to watch his antics for someone who's now, he's not your guy.
- 13:03He's on Pat McAfee talking about Epstein and Jimmy Kimmel and creating all this
- 13:08drama and everyone's, it's a sideshow at Rodgers now.
- 13:11It's all about what he says instead of him being on the field.
- 13:13So what's it like now being so far attached from it and seeing it from the other side?
- 13:17So when he got hurt, it sucked. sucked and i
- 13:19number one he's somebody that we watched and admired for a long time
- 13:22number two that we lost a first-round
- 13:25draft pick that conditional pick that went to the jets if
- 13:28he had played 65 of the stats this year what a
- 13:31first-round pick that's true and it and it
- 13:34probably the injury almost benefited the jets in a way when you
- 13:36think about it that's kind of in a way it just yeah now it's a
- 13:39second round pick it's a higher second round pick because the jets
- 13:42were not that good so i mean i think you know how much
- 13:45better with the jets probably that probably would have been in the i
- 13:47think he would they would have been better i think it
- 13:50probably would it probably would have been 18th to 20th yeah 18th or
- 13:5320th range you know so if the depending on how the
- 13:56packers had gone you know that that had no impact on that so green bay
- 13:59is looking at two two first round picks at the back end you know i that would
- 14:03have been great but in terms of you wanted him to start that's i i don't know
- 14:08about the draft pick thing that's interesting i will we will yeah we will it's
- 14:11it's harder i try not to root for anybody to get injured i really you know i
- 14:15just i feel like that's tasteless.
- 14:17The only ones that have even come close have been people that play the game dirty, reckless.
- 14:24The two that come to my mind are Vontaze Perfect and Dominick and Sue,
- 14:29who almost caused Rodgers an Achilles injury.
- 14:34He was with the Rams. He didn't stomp. He tripped Rodgers. If Rodgers would
- 14:38have ziggled instead of zag, I think he would have torn his ACL.
- 14:42But then he stopped on having Dietrich Smith on that Thanksgiving game and rightfully got thrown out.
- 14:46But even then, I still have a hard time doing it just because it's a game.
- 14:50I hate seeing these guys get beat up.
- 14:52But in terms of the sideshow, oh, boy, I wish I would have grabbed a bottle
- 14:55of bourbon because I'm going to need it.
- 14:58Not our circus, not our monkey. That's really kind of how I feel on that.
- 15:01And Eric, I really am interested.
- 15:03I think he would have been in front of the New York media much because he had
- 15:07been hurt. He was in front of the media plenty.
- 15:10We knew about him coming back. He was very vocal. I mean, I'm mad at you.
- 15:15But he didn't face the New York media much. I feel like would he have taken
- 15:18a little bit more of a beating had he been doing weekly availabilities and still talking like that?
- 15:23If he's winning, no one would care. That's how it would go.
- 15:26That's kind of how it was here. But when he started after that whole vaccinated
- 15:31versus immunized debate, he lost money.
- 15:34The Packers have a lot of connections with the health industry here.
- 15:37A lot of medical providers were very hurt, spoke to me off the record.
- 15:41I had something written about they felt betrayed on that.
- 15:45If you're winning, this is America. You can believe what you want.
- 15:49I'm not a big canceling guy, but you also have to realize if you're going to
- 15:54say something outlandish, you got to live with the consequences.
- 15:56Consequences so when he says that and somebody's
- 16:00going to him oh and then he starts painting you know
- 16:02he'll make it it's like lobbing the grenade and oh i'm the
- 16:05victim i'm the victim like dude no you brought this on yourself you
- 16:09know you say something stupid you got to bring it on and i think as tough
- 16:12as he's looked you know if you read anything about aaron rogers
- 16:15it's always been about a chip on the shoulder you know internally
- 16:18despite this macho exterior inside i
- 16:21think he's just an insecure little boy still inside from
- 16:24whatever reason he's got that whole thing with his family which not our business
- 16:27but the dynamics he is just a strange strange dude he is and i'm just glad that
- 16:32that circus is no longer here and now all we had this discussion after this
- 16:38you know jordan love is going to get not a world-breaking extension by any means
- 16:41but he's going to get paid.
- 16:42This spring you know and fame can change people and rogers was
- 16:46not this way i'm we were all trying to pinpoint when when he took this dive
- 16:50into crazy town and we can't seem to figure it out but I think at fame the MVPs
- 16:56got to him and that's when he started jumping into the Iowa he didn't have a
- 17:02support system his family was alienated,
- 17:05Yeah, I mean, he's definitely weird, and in some instances, very interesting.
- 17:12He's one of the most interesting people I've ever heard. Right?
- 17:15You know, I just dunked on him for a little bit, but some of the stuff he's
- 17:18talked about in terms of mental health and self-care, I've taken a hardness
- 17:21to actually help me out in quite a few ways, too.
- 17:24So I can't, you know, I think, Eric, I think I told you this in a tweet when
- 17:28you were mocking me for bringing Rodgers up on one of my many locations. patience.
- 17:32I said, you know, I said it's, I'm in a relationship with Aaron Rodgers and
- 17:35it's complicated. I think that's kind of how our fan base feels.
- 17:38As far as how the franchise feels, this is a little interesting nugget,
- 17:41but I'll leave it at this.
- 17:42If you go into the Packers pro shop right now, you know, they've got displays
- 17:46of all the former players, former coaches.
- 17:48There's still a display over there. There's still a photo, a big photo up in
- 17:52there of Mike McCarthy after the Super Bowl.
- 17:54There is nothing referring to Aaron Rodgers in there anymore.
- 17:59There are no jerseys out. Sounds like A-Rod a little bit. He left the Yankees a little disgruntled.
- 18:05Yeah, it must be an A-Rod thing, but they have the photo of and I'm so glad
- 18:12I've got this photo. I just don't have it hanging up right now.
- 18:15It's a photo of Favre, Starr and Rogers.
- 18:17When they retired Favre's number in 2015, after Starr had that stroke,
- 18:22I'm so glad they got that photo.
- 18:23That's the only photo that's the only thing, anything of Aaron Rogers that I
- 18:28can see that's in there. Interesting.
- 18:31I don't know if that's got something to do with the NFLPA and rights.
- 18:34Like I could be way, I could be putting a tinfoil cheese head on right now.
- 18:37I, there may be, this could be an NFLPA thing. Whereas the coaches who cares,
- 18:40but I found that kind of interesting, but long story short, I'm glad the circus is over.
- 18:47Yeah. I could see how that circus could be a little bit of a distraction for
- 18:51everyone. I mean, I'm not even a jets fan.
- 18:53And I feel like I'm like, why are we talking about Rogers again?
- 18:58It's it's, it's, it's funny, but he's, you know, So he's the quarterback of
- 19:01a New York football team, so he's going to get the spotlight regardless.
- 19:04I hope he's up for it next year. I'm dying to see what he can do a full season
- 19:07post-game interviews, to be honest with you, because he's a very interesting interview.
- 19:13All right, so this weekend, championship weekend, I already laid out the teams that we have.
- 19:19We have the Baltimore Ravens and the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 19:24Pete, who do you have?
- 19:26I'm rooting for the Ravens. I think Kansas City is going to win the game.
- 19:30Okay i just kansas city they i feel like they should have lost in buffalo and
- 19:35we are just destined to be trolled by donna kelsey for at least another two weeks.
- 19:40Okay, Chris, what about you, man? I think this is going to be,
- 19:44this is Baltimore's time.
- 19:46I think it's going, I think Lamar Jackson's playing well enough.
- 19:49He's probably going to be the league MVP again.
- 19:51Just, I feel like Kansas City is just off a little bit enough,
- 19:54and I think Baltimore is just too well coached. I think Baltimore is going to
- 19:58win, but it's going to be close.
- 20:00Yeah, I've been kicking this one back and forth all week, and I'm not really
- 20:03sure what. It's a tough pick, really. Yeah, I'm not really sure.
- 20:09There's a lot of factors involved. i do think the way the ravens have been playing
- 20:12they should win i think they've been the best team for a while in the afc now
- 20:18so i think like they should be the team that wins but i don't know man it's
- 20:21tough for me to pick against mahomes and and kelsey and and andy reed they are,
- 20:28i don't know have they only lost to tom
- 20:30brady in the playoffs is that true he's got two playoff losses in
- 20:33my homes and they both into brady i think so that's a
- 20:37very interesting stat i kind hope that keeps going didn't cincinnati didn't
- 20:40burrow beat them okay burrow beat them too all right
- 20:43so he might have yeah so yeah
- 20:46i thought cincinnati won the nfc championship or
- 20:49the nfc championship and they did they lost the rams that's right yeah yeah
- 20:53yeah so i mean i don't know i just have a really hard time this time of year
- 20:57picking against those two guys of those three guys but i kind of i'm kind of
- 21:02siding with chris i just think it's baltimore's time so i'm gonna to pick the Ravens?
- 21:07I think only one Harbaugh could win a championship in a given year,
- 21:10so I think we've already fulfilled that.
- 21:13Alright, so NFC, we have the Detroit Lions traveling to San Francisco to play the 49ers.
- 21:20Chris, I'll start with you on this one. Who do you have?
- 21:24Boy, San Francisco did not play well against the Packers, so I think they're
- 21:29going to bounce back, but I feel like Detroit's kind of riding that team of
- 21:33destiny wave right now. I'm going to pick Detroit. Thank you.
- 21:37Just because there's a vibe around them that it's a different team.
- 21:42And I don't know. This one's a gut feeling more than anything statistically.
- 21:46I mean, San Francisco's a very well-coached team, but I feel like Goff is the
- 21:50more steady quarterback right now over Purdy. Sure.
- 21:53Okay. I know that's the interesting one for me.
- 21:57Of all the quarterbacks in this, those two, I mean, Goff obviously is playing
- 22:01the Super Bowl, so he's not a bad quarterback by any stretch,
- 22:04But they're not as high profile as Jackson and Mahomes are, right?
- 22:07So that's kind of the way this has worked out.
- 22:10Pete, what about you? Who do you have? I am rooting for the Adam Snow movie
- 22:14show. Like, I'm going all in on the Lions.
- 22:17I'm really pulling for Adam and the Lions here.
- 22:21Yeah, I just, I don't know if we're, like, it kind of reminds me almost of,
- 22:27like, Packers, Cowboys in a way. Like, I feel like this game is going to be
- 22:30really built up in favor of the lions and someone's going to get blown out.
- 22:34And I, I don't want it to be the lions, but I just, you know,
- 22:37like, it just, it just seems like everyone's focused on really that game because
- 22:40of Detroit and how bad they've been and they've never been to a super bowl.
- 22:43And everyone thinks of the winless season and Matt Millen and all the wide receivers,
- 22:47right? Like you just can't have those ugly throwback uniforms.
- 22:50I used to wear on Thanksgiving with no logo. Yes.
- 22:54The line. I don't know anything of a positive about the lions outside of Barry Barry Sanders.
- 22:58I guess you could throw Charlie Batch in there for a little bit,
- 23:01but I just feel like the. Calvin Johnson.
- 23:04Don't forget Megatron. Yeah. Yeah. But he was also part of the very bad line.
- 23:08I feel like they were at their worst with Megatron. Yes. Oh boy.
- 23:11It's a, it's a rough, it's a rough period of time. And Stafford was a part of
- 23:15that too. So, you know, like I just, I just really rooted for the lions.
- 23:19I just, I can't help it. Like I don't normally root against the classic team,
- 23:23like the Niners. Like I usually kind of want those teams to win championships
- 23:26and continue their legacy. But I don't know. I like the rest of the country.
- 23:30I'm just the darling of the world right now, of the sports world,
- 23:33of the Lions. So that's it. I'm going with Detroit.
- 23:36The Lions-Chiefs would be a great AFL throwback, AFL-NFL.
- 23:40The Lions are an AFL team? I didn't know that. No, the Lions were an NFL team,
- 23:43but the Chiefs were an AFL team.
- 23:45Oh, I got what you're saying. The Lions have been around. I mean,
- 23:47the NFC North, all four of those teams have been around. The Vikings are probably,
- 23:50I think the Vikings might be the newest.
- 23:52Yeah. Maybe not. I mean, it's close. I mean, the Packers and Bears have been
- 23:55around for over 100 years.
- 23:56Detroit's not far behind. And Minnesota's, well, they had 50.
- 24:00They've been around almost 70 years, too, because they had 50 years and 20 times. So, yeah.
- 24:05Wow. Okay, cool. That's interesting. Yeah. So this is another one that's been tough. I agree.
- 24:11Chris said the Niners didn't play well last week. They didn't.
- 24:15So then my head says, well, maybe they got it out of their system, right?
- 24:18Maybe this week we're going to be clicking on all cylinders and they'll be playing up to their best.
- 24:23If that happens and if Debo Samuel plays, I do think San Francisco is going to win.
- 24:28I'm rooting for Detroit, but I'm going to pick the 49ers.
- 24:32But I do hope Detroit wins that I'm just picking them because my,
- 24:36my analysis tells me that they should win.
- 24:40But my, my sentimental choice of course is the lions.
- 24:43And I would not hate at all a lions chiefs to a bowl.
- 24:48I kind of don't want San Francisco and the Chiefs, though, I guess.
- 24:53Well, have you guys seen that Super Bowl logo?
- 24:58I mean, that 12 brought up the logo conspiracy theory that the last several
- 25:02years, you go back and look at the Super Bowl logos, the teams that are playing
- 25:07the games, the colors have been in the logo.
- 25:09Interesting. If you look at this year's logo, it's got the Ravens and 49ers
- 25:15logos, colors in there. It's like purple, black, yellow. And if you go look at it, I'm not kidding.
- 25:22People really want the NFL to be rigged. I really do think people want it to be more rigged than not.
- 25:28This, I feel like, is more of a tongue-in-cheek one, because when asked about
- 25:31this, it was on last time. I forgot.
- 25:34Maybe it was on McAfee, but Rodgers goes, well, if it ends up being San Francisco
- 25:38and Baltimore, there better be some Jets green in that logo next year.
- 25:42There's a couple of teams that have a similar shade of green. you know.
- 25:49Yeah yeah and i guess packers a little
- 25:51yeah oh god packers just depending on the light jets and
- 25:55the eagles have a similar shade of green though dude i don't
- 25:58think i don't think there's enough um energy for that kind of a super bowl a
- 26:04packers super bowl would be would be just what the nfl wants in every i would
- 26:10love to talk to the two of you next year before a packers jet Okay,
- 26:15let me just put this out there.
- 26:16If the Jets make the Super Bowl, you guys might not be able to find me.
- 26:22Eric will be in the Super Bowl city basically claiming his territory for a month
- 26:29in advance. Anyone even gets down there.
- 26:32It's in New Orleans next year. It's a heck of a... Probably best Super Bowl.
- 26:36It's going to be crawfish and Aunt Cindy all month for Eric Holzman.
- 26:40Let me tell you. No, I don't know what I would do, honestly.
- 26:45Just making it, just getting there. If they ever won...
- 26:49Dead i'm dead i'm gonna
- 26:52go out as some kind of bourbon for everyone's window
- 26:55eric holt is a man to not be stopped we
- 26:58that's that's the super bowl that we thought we were gonna get a few years ago
- 27:01and it was packer steelers the jets almost beat pittsburgh that game if i remember
- 27:05so we almost got that game yeah yeah i know rex ryan the rex right jets in a
- 27:11super bowl like it stinks people People have never said before.
- 27:15No, they have once. Not since 1998. Oh, well, not my, yeah, I guess not.
- 27:20Not your last time, but yeah.
- 27:22I remember they, then they had the game against the Broncos in 98.
- 27:25You know, that was the last L.A. Oh.
- 27:27They had Parcells, yeah. That game.
- 27:30I think L.A.'s last year was 99. Were they ahead at halftime,
- 27:33the Jets? They were winning 10-0, yeah.
- 27:35Everything that, like. In Denver. That was, that was the Murphy's Law game,
- 27:40I call it, because Curtis Martin never fumbles fumbled.
- 27:43It was the weirdest game ever but that's why jet fans are the way they are because
- 27:49but you got them back like you brought brian cox killed terrell davis.
- 27:56My cousin's a broncos fan who's still hates the jets maybe more than the raiders
- 28:01because of that game yeah and then and then we never then they created tom brady
- 28:05we never saw tom brady if mo lewis doesn't knock out drew bledsoe we never hear
- 28:10of tom brady tom brady never gets to start So the Jets aren't a poverty franchise.
- 28:15They're a catalyst franchise.
- 28:17Exactly. That's the best way to put it. For somebody else's franchise.
- 28:21They just do things and benefit other teams.
- 28:25So crazy, man. I can relate to a lot of the other fan bases that haven't been successful.
- 28:34So like Minnesota, those fan bases.
- 28:38Well no but it things happen
- 28:42to them too right i could say that and that's how i
- 28:44feel as a jet fan so when things happen to them i'm like i could
- 28:47kind of what is your i just to harp on wado here what is your equivalent jets
- 28:53wise to the minnesota miracle like well it wasn't is there anything it wasn't
- 28:57a playoff game but the monday night miracle against the the dolphins when they
- 29:02were down 30 to 6 or something like that okay and they wound up and they wound up winning,
- 29:07That was one of the best games I've ever seen.
- 29:12I'll never forget the picture of Jason Taylor egging people on from the sideline
- 29:17and like, ha, ha, ha, goodbye.
- 29:19And then when Jumbo Elliott caught the touchdown in the end zone.
- 29:23I remember that game. Yeah, that game was just insane and so much fun to watch as a Jets fan.
- 29:29Weren't the Jets part of the Heidi game too? Yeah, they were.
- 29:33Eric, do you remember the Marino fake spike? Of course I do. Okay.
- 29:38I'm just curious. I didn't play against the Jets. I did not play against the Jets.
- 29:42Yeah, and he threw it. Aaron Glenn was a pretty good cornerback.
- 29:48He was a Pro Bowl-level cornerback, and he got him on that.
- 29:52So yeah, I remember that game as well.
- 29:55Eric, I've been to a Jets game at Lambeau before, and I gotta say, Fireman Ed was there.
- 30:00But I've met some of the Jets fans, honestly, are some of the best fans in the
- 30:03league. It's probably just because of tolerance.
- 30:05They hang in there. I don't know. They're very tolerant. When I went to Dallas,
- 30:09I've been to a Jets and a a giants game and i gotta say i like the jets fans
- 30:12for whatever reason are a little more polite.
- 30:17There's reasons for that i could i could tell you them but i
- 30:20don't want anyone to hate me so i'll just keep it moving
- 30:23and yeah yeah we'll keep going forward here
- 30:26there's a violence i gotcha yeah yeah i don't want
- 30:28to choose violence on the show today all right so
- 30:31i'll write down the pics lock them in
- 30:34i'll post them on the in the group the facebook group
- 30:37so we have them for posterity i'll post it tonight because
- 30:40i don't get to show up i want it to be up for tomorrow so uh we'll have them
- 30:44up there all right that's it holds me just thinking about the audience he's
- 30:48yes he's a yes eric is a man of the people we knew that i knew that i try two
- 30:52best appearances i try all right so we're gonna go we're gonna go through some of our news,
- 30:58we're not it's not gonna be as much as usual but we'll go through some of the
- 31:01stories that we heard this week that are going on in fandom and pop culture
- 31:04like we always do and first i want to start with because this news kind of made
- 31:09me happy daredevil born again has restarted production,
- 31:14of course the read this is revamped this is the revamped daredevil and we've
- 31:20seen we have seen pictures of both perrin and foggy floating around the net
- 31:27as part of the production So it appears that those rumors might necessarily be true.
- 31:35So first of all, what do you guys think? Chris, let's ask you first,
- 31:39because you haven't been on the show.
- 31:40What do you think of them switching gears and going from whatever,
- 31:44I guess, more lighthearted version of them they were going to do?
- 31:47Could it go back to the more Netflix stylized version of the character?
- 31:51I think that might be kind of what Marvel might need right now.
- 31:56There's obviously a lot of similarities between Daredevil and Batman.
- 31:58I mean, I think that's, you know, there's no way to go there.
- 32:02There and i think you know seeing ben affleck's return to bed all besides
- 32:05besides bad luck we are oh whoa i am
- 32:08not gonna get i am not gonna get you going on that i am
- 32:11not gonna i am not gonna get the zaddy going on that one but you
- 32:15know i think i feel like that's kind of the way to go with the way it's you
- 32:18know i think people are more into you gotta shake things up a little bit formula
- 32:22wise you know when marvel's been you know they gotta reinvent themselves a little
- 32:25bit because you know comic book movies you know there's been a lot of debate
- 32:28on where and maybe even tv shows too i I guess we can include in that on where they're going.
- 32:33And I think, you know, reinventing it, going back that way, you know,
- 32:36I think is definitely the way to go. That's at least that's how I feel.
- 32:39Yeah. I mean, yeah, I agree. I mean, I do think it was a smart move.
- 32:43They brought back the old stunt and fight coordinator, Phil. So there is his name.
- 32:49So that's another sign that, yeah, we're going to get more of that version of the character.
- 32:54And like I said, we saw some pictures of, of both foggy and Karen back.
- 32:59If you're looking around the internet it's been kind of hard to miss,
- 33:03people have been posting them so I'm sorry for spoiling it for me Eric I missed
- 33:07it now I know I got to there I appreciate it spoiler alert not really but for the show,
- 33:12but for the show's purpose yeah for the show I wanted to put it out there so
- 33:17so yeah reproduction we're going forward show's still coming.
- 33:24I'm still amazed that the MCU thought that their Daredevil was so bad they had
- 33:28to go back and borrow somebody else's.
- 33:30The current MCU is just a shell of itself, really.
- 33:34They're literally just taking everything that has come before and recycling again.
- 33:38If you really want to talk about recycled bullshit, that is what the MCU has
- 33:42become because they're not even coming up with fresh ideas.
- 33:44They're taking other people's ideas and just sticking their label on it.
- 33:48It's very fascinating to me because this is nothing more than season four of Daredevil.
- 33:54Essentially, they spent so long trying to keep them separate.
- 33:57Like, I've said this before. This isn't anything new, but they basically,
- 34:00you know, Redhead Stepchild, the Netflix first Netflix verse for so long.
- 34:06And now they're kind of hoping it's what saves them, right?
- 34:10You know, you're banking on the identity of what somebody else created.
- 34:14And it's not even it doesn't even fit in with what you've been doing for the last 20 movies.
- 34:19Well they're it's the recycling they're recycling
- 34:22other people's ideas but they're also kind of recycling their own
- 34:25i mean i know there's comic basis in you
- 34:28know ironheart and you know sam wilson captain america
- 34:31you know it's like they're kind of like revamping the avengers
- 34:35to you know there was that rumor that they were going to bring back
- 34:37you know robert downey jr that turned it's like the facsimile squad
- 34:41correct exactly exactly it's like
- 34:43i you know i can't believe
- 34:47you know feige as good as he did with that you know we'll
- 34:49call it the infinities the infinity saga i think they call it yeah
- 34:52the thanos era you know as good of a job that they did there but
- 34:55they didn't have the foresight for what comes next you know
- 34:58endgame does all this and they're kind of like okay well oh crap what do we do
- 35:01like i'll be honest maybe they just had
- 35:04one story in them and that was the infinity saga maybe there is no
- 35:07other story to follow it up with because they just they don't have a good one
- 35:12to come up with they were maybe they just had the one story yeah they were victim
- 35:15of their own success because after the infinity saga they tried to do what everyone
- 35:20said like just put out these solo films and they were doing that but everyone's so used to.
- 35:25They're having some kind of connective story people are like where's the
- 35:27story what are we supposed like what are we supposed to write right right right
- 35:30so it was kind of a kind of a double edged sword at the end because you know
- 35:36you had great success with that method and they tried something different it
- 35:39just didn't people wouldn't catch on so i also think the quality of their Their
- 35:43movies are a huge step down from when they first tried to do this.
- 35:45I mean, you're talking about, like, the Eternals. There's things like that that are huge, just misses.
- 35:51Captain Marvel 2. What else was a big miss for them? Outside of,
- 35:55like, Guardians 3, like, what was their big miss? Ant-Man, Quantumania.
- 35:57That bombed as well. Like, the first two Ant-Man were huge hits. Shang-Chi did well.
- 36:02Shang-Chi did good. It was a very good movie. Doctor Strange,
- 36:05Multiverse of Madness financially did well.
- 36:08Um i enjoy that one a lot too but i'm trying to think i
- 36:11feel like with this this run of the mcu movies is more
- 36:14negative than positive spider-man obviously they're
- 36:17gonna they're gonna have to
- 36:18do something with the next spider the next spider-man is gonna have to be
- 36:20huge but i guess they're still waiting on whether or not
- 36:23tom holland's gonna do it right yeah i mean we we
- 36:26reported a few weeks ago that he's actually part of development with
- 36:29the story if if he indeed comes back and
- 36:32pete kind of things yeah well there's there's rumors
- 36:35now that sony and marvel just completely disagree on what
- 36:38to do with the next movie so you know there's rumors that
- 36:41sony wants to dive double down on
- 36:44mcguire and and garfield field yeah and marvel wants to move ahead with holland
- 36:50and so this is it like we're back in we're back here again before we were no
- 36:55way home where sony's gonna pull spider-man away and they're gonna do what they
- 37:00want and i bet you we're gonna see more,
- 37:02mcguire and and garfield i just i just have
- 37:05a feeling sony's pulled it away once and they got what they wanted don't think
- 37:08that they're gonna be afraid to pull it away again and just do their own thing because they
- 37:11they're very confident in themselves for whatever goddamn reason with this venom
- 37:16morbius madame webb bullshit they're very confident in themselves and then off
- 37:20the spider-verse movies the animated stuff they think they got an idea i'm telling
- 37:24you right now they're sony feels very high on themselves do not be surprised
- 37:28if they pull spider-man away away from Marvel. They can't agree.
- 37:30Give Peter Parker one more movie, I think, or whatever they want to do.
- 37:36The Spider-Verse, the animated movies, that trilogy will rest,
- 37:39and then maybe you jump into a live-action Miles Morales.
- 37:41I know that's been rumored, but it hasn't developed. You've got an established
- 37:46alternate version of a big character now, whereas... You probably should just
- 37:50start off with a Miles Morales movie. Or you probably could.
- 37:53And just have both of them. I don't know.
- 37:55Yeah, Peter in the MCU and Miles doing his own thing. Have that have that third
- 37:59animated movie end with a post credit scene and a live action roll it out that
- 38:02way like I mean they're going to connect it somehow anyway I mean it can't be
- 38:06any worse than the connected tissue between that and Venom,
- 38:09Correct. Be honest. But it's all got to connect.
- 38:13It's all got to connect. In the MCU, it kind of does. Sony might as well be
- 38:17Warner Brothers at this point. They're going to recycle and they're going to
- 38:19try to run the well dry and guess what?
- 38:21That well has been dry for a while. I mean, this is...
- 38:27I was going to say the worst thing that happened was Venom making money.
- 38:31Correct. If Venom didn't make money, they probably don't continue going forward with any of this.
- 38:37How bad did the second one do oh god
- 38:40it wasn't i feel like it wasn't stuck
- 38:42i have a lot of i have issues with the second movie i
- 38:46have a lot of issues i'm just talking financially i mean
- 38:48i guess it didn't equal the first it didn't but
- 38:51they're making a third one so it made it i feel
- 38:55like i might justify a third yeah is that a covet that was
- 38:57a covet era release right i think so that might have
- 39:00heard that might have heard it okay i think it was yes but
- 39:03people love hardy in this role like i like the
- 39:06first Venom myself to be honest with you I think it's it's a
- 39:09guilty pleasure movie for me the second one I haven't even
- 39:12really revisited it but you weren't alone Pete because the first
- 39:15one made a ton of money made a ton of money yep yeah so a
- 39:18lot of people but I'll admit it's it's a Venom one
- 39:21is a really solid like 1999 comic book
- 39:24movie you know screw source material we'll be faithful just enough we'll give
- 39:29you Jameson sprinkles here well you know that we'll do this that over there
- 39:32and then you know it's not really going to come out to much but it's venom yeah
- 39:36well we talked a little we you mentioned madam webb as we're in this now sony
- 39:42verse of of villain movies because.
- 39:44That's kind of what this really is we haven't
- 39:47seen craven yet so we'll see how that goes as well we know
- 39:51madam webb is coming out pete and i have covered it pretty extensively
- 39:54from the first i think on location site that they
- 39:58mentioned when they first started repping out 1996 corollas yeah
- 40:02i remember we were
- 40:05we were talking about it so it's coming and dakota
- 40:08johnson who's the star has been speaking more and
- 40:10more lately apparently she got to do some driving and her own stunt work driving
- 40:15so she's very very proud of herself look at this tom cruise yeah so she drove
- 40:20an ambulance a taxi she drove everything in the movie and she's really really
- 40:26yeah she said watch out tom cruise and yeah so,
- 40:30that's cool she's kind of doing her own stuff I think that's cool,
- 40:34I just I'm glad that there's some action in this movie because I have no idea
- 40:37what it's really about like I just we don't know anything about this it's about
- 40:40a man in web that I'm not really that familiar with myself it's not my favorite
- 40:44version of the character so we'll see what goes on with it but again it.
- 40:48It's a Sony Spider-Man less Spider-Man movie I don't know what to I know what
- 40:53to expect but I just I don't know how people react to it,
- 40:57Yes, I do. Yeah, my standards are low on this one.
- 41:01Personally, I just I don't see this being much. It might be a more of a niche type film.
- 41:08Maybe might get some home video traction.
- 41:12But yeah, I don't see this being any. It almost feels like Sony was like,
- 41:16remember the Birds of Prey movie? Let's do one of those.
- 41:19Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I never thought of that, but that's a good analogy.
- 41:24That is a very good analogy. I didn't either, but yeah.
- 41:27So it's set in 2003. As if we didn't know, there you go.
- 41:32As I mentioned on the last show, the fact that I think it has Sidney Sweeney
- 41:36and Isabella Merced and people that are in this film that are popular now.
- 41:41The Nico Caruso hot list.
- 41:43Yeah, I think you're going to get people watching it just because,
- 41:47oh, Sidney Sweeney's in it. I want to go see it.
- 41:49I think there's a certain cinephile attraction
- 41:52to this because of who's in it right like
- 41:55i don't know each one of these
- 41:58girls is a twitter like just i don't
- 42:01know a hot word like i
- 42:04see their names trending on the internet all the time so i i feel like they're
- 42:08banking a lot on pr name recognition here which they probably should because
- 42:12i don't know if anyone's really even knows what this movie's about outside of
- 42:17especially outside of fandom i i don't think within fandom many people are excited
- 42:20for it mostly because Cause it's got the name Sony attached to it.
- 42:23Yeah. Yeah. So the director is CJ Clarkson.
- 42:27She was speaking about it. Cause everyone's saying, you know,
- 42:30because it's in, it's a Spider-Man character and it's in the Sony verse and,
- 42:34you know, could it be an MCU connection?
- 42:36She says, no, it's a standalone world.
- 42:39She had free reign and let the movie be what it needed to be.
- 42:42So, and she said that was a gift. So I'm assuming that as we've all known and
- 42:47seen that a lot of directors are kind of like, yeah, okay, maybe I'll do that.
- 42:51Can I make my film when it comes to working with Marvel?
- 42:55And she got, she got free reign to do what she wants to do. So,
- 42:58well, she's not really working with Marvel.
- 43:00That's the thing. She's more, it's a Sony. I just, I'm like,
- 43:04I'm like, so I'm not going to see Jared Leto pop up in this and you're not going
- 43:08to try to take on Spider-Man like the last one you guys did.
- 43:12I mean, that's the thing. You don't know until we see it.
- 43:16Who's to say in post they're not going to go back or that they didn't go back and add?
- 43:20I want to see Keaton pop up in the next one. Like he was like,
- 43:22I want to know what goes on here.
- 43:25Or am I just going to get another Mark Strong Sinestro? Or that's it.
- 43:29And that's just sort of this.
- 43:31Yeah, I don't know. But we'll see. The movie is coming out. Have you seen Morbius, Chris?
- 43:37Unfortunately, no. Or fortunately, no, I should say.
- 43:40You should see Morbius. you should see more of this i just i i watched the trailer
- 43:45i'm like did i just watch a preview of just a car crash compilation like i i
- 43:49saw keaton's cameo at the end of the movie,
- 43:52oh you know what i did see that i did see the like you know i'm like i'm not
- 43:56gonna sit through all that but i saw them like why the hell is the vulture in
- 44:01here like it's i don't understand,
- 44:03because if you go back and look at the trailers they they have a completely different
- 44:06interaction interaction yeah it's in the trailers i
- 44:09know so it's good see that's yeah i love
- 44:12it threw me off i was like what the hell sony man
- 44:15yeah as i'm saying like madame webb dude madame webb is going to be something
- 44:19dude it's going to be something to witness it may be a complete dumpster fire
- 44:24or it may be guilty pleasure you may it may actually be good i don't know but
- 44:28it's going to be something to check out they need to be happy they make good electronics because.
- 44:35I don't know what's going to happen with this one.
- 44:38But I'm still praying, guys, fans, talk to whoever you need to talk to at Sony
- 44:43to get Pete and I at the damn premiere. That's what we want.
- 44:47I want a picture of Eric with Sidney Sweeney. And Dakota Johnson and Isabella
- 44:53Merced and all the rest of the cast would be cool.
- 44:56And I'll be going into work the day after the premiere shenanigans at Madam
- 44:59Web Premiere. I'll be like, oh, God, what the hell did those two get into?
- 45:02Well, I got to put it on Green Bay TV. No, sorry, boys.
- 45:06That's perfectly fine so you mentioned
- 45:10ironheart and ironheart has as concluded
- 45:14filming so it began filming back
- 45:17in june of 2022 and but through the strikes of
- 45:20course there were probably slowdowns but dominique thorn who's playing
- 45:22riri williams who we saw in wakanda forever as well
- 45:25she's reprising her role and will be the filming has concluded she said she
- 45:31can she says i can say strap in and get ready it will be a ride much like they
- 45:34all are it's an epic journey and one that i'm very excited to share so i actually
- 45:39liked her character in wakanda forever this is another,
- 45:43like another character that i don't know much about it's a six episode series
- 45:47on disney plus of course it also stars alden ehrenreich anthony ramos lyric
- 45:51ross and sasha baron cohen.
- 45:54So where's your guys? I guess I'll ask both of you. Where do you guys have any
- 46:00interest in this? Are you going to watch it?
- 46:02I forgot all about it until this article. I forgot all about it.
- 46:06I personally didn't really like Wakanda forever. Really? Like it's a good movie.
- 46:11I just didn't really enjoy it.
- 46:12So like it's her character, just like nothing that movie really sticks out to
- 46:16me, to be honest with you, that includes iron heart.
- 46:18So I'm not really into it. I don't know.
- 46:20I, I got to check out echo first. first it's on my list yeah the the beginning
- 46:27of wakanda forever so the stuff with the t'challa funeral i thought was incredible
- 46:30pulled up my heartstrings you know obviously after you know,
- 46:36chadwick's sad passing so i thought that was great but it took so much out of
- 46:39me emotionally that i had trouble maybe that's i'm kind of in the same boat
- 46:42as you pete it kind of wasn't you know i feel like the beginning took so much
- 46:46out of me that it was hard to enjoy the rest of the movie, if that makes any sense. Yeah.
- 46:52But, you know, I love the Tony Stark character, and I just like,
- 46:56you know, this... I really hope she kind of...
- 46:59I had read rumors of, you know, like a Robert Downey Jr.
- 47:03AI thing in there, you know, being her version of Jarvis or Friday, you know.
- 47:07I thought that would kind of be a cool trick, but I'm interested in it just
- 47:10because, you know, I kind of dug a little bit into the comics,
- 47:13and I'm like, this is an interesting character, you know, in terms not just of,
- 47:18the representation of what it can mean for African-American girls seeing somebody
- 47:21in the STEM field like that, which is important.
- 47:24But it's a unique character in the sense that she's picking up kind of where
- 47:31Tony Stark left off in that.
- 47:32And I'm really interested to see how this works, because that's where I think
- 47:36Marvel is trying to set this up as.
- 47:38She's the RDJ successor, which those are big shoes to fill for anybody.
- 47:42Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's Remy Williams character almost represents what I think Marvel is doing wrong.
- 47:48And it's like, instead of just continuing on making Iron Man movies are trying
- 47:53to make something similar with a different character.
- 47:56I just feel like you should have just honestly never have killed Robert Downey Jr.
- 48:00And just kept going. Like I just Iron Man movies are very popular and just,
- 48:04and it's the whole thing about the shared universe. versus now you're handcuffed,
- 48:08you know, unless you bring an Iron Man from like Earth 35, you know,
- 48:12or you do a prequel before I end game or something like that, right?
- 48:16You know, this Robert Downey Jr.'s dad or something like that.
- 48:18So it's just, I don't know.
- 48:21There's a lot that kind of rubs me the wrong way just with the MCU,
- 48:25and this is like kind of one of those things.
- 48:26Because you can't undo that, because if you lessen that sacrifice that he made
- 48:31in that movie, you're destroying that movie.
- 48:35You're destroying the most profitable movie of all time. But at the same time,
- 48:38imagine if you're like a hardcore Iron Man fan. Right. That's it.
- 48:42I mean, I know you've got this great Iron Man throughout. out you know
- 48:45he's got a trilogy he's basically two trilogies basically
- 48:48in three avengers right right how many avengers movies was he in
- 48:50he basically got more than two trilogies essentially right like
- 48:54that's six movies you know like fun but again like
- 48:57that's it though that's i don't know unless i'm being greedy i
- 49:00just feel like civil civil war to me was iron man three and
- 49:03a half two so i mean i think i that counts as i
- 49:05think a partial iron man see i'm looking at it also from like a
- 49:08captain america's perspective because i got two really good captain america movies
- 49:11i got him in an avengers half an avengers film
- 49:14a bunch of them but like i don't know like i want to see him do more
- 49:17captain america stuff like i thought hugo weaving was great the red skull i
- 49:21would have loved to seen him come back stuff like that i just yep you know i
- 49:25wanted more cap and i'm just not going to get it i mean i'll get sam but and
- 49:28i enjoyed falcon winter soldier but you know steve rogers my god well i mean
- 49:33the red skull thing that's you know imagine imagine,
- 49:35doing that like to a to a joker you know that's kind of the captain america's
- 49:39number one villain You kind of just don't, you don't do that to that main villain,
- 49:43but yeah, that missed opportunity there. I agree completely.
- 49:47Yeah, I mean, I do agree. I thought I enjoyed both of the first two Captain
- 49:52America movies. I even enjoyed Civil War to an extent.
- 49:55Yeah, I'm with you. I'm with you, too. Yeah, it's just not...
- 49:58They just shouldn't have called it Captain America thing.
- 50:00They could have just called it Civil War, and it would have been fine,
- 50:03but I know Captain America Civil War... They had trouble naming the Captain
- 50:05America movies because I feel like Winter Soldier is actually like the rise and fall of Hydra.
- 50:10Like, it's not really about the Winter Soldier. He's just in there causing a
- 50:12ruckus. You know what I'm saying?
- 50:13Right. It's still my favorite Marvel movie. i still think it's the best marvel
- 50:18movie yeah that's my favorite yeah i agree i agree so and it's directed by people i don't like.
- 50:25That's all i praise i have for it but the way they
- 50:28set this thing up it's like real life progression
- 50:31so you know you want to have stakes people have to
- 50:34die you want to yeah that's true i just i don't know superhero movies
- 50:37it's that it's not real life no i
- 50:40agree with you i just go there to escape i got you trust me
- 50:43pete if this doesn't work they're gonna end the whole thing and they will
- 50:46reboot from the beginning and start this all
- 50:48over again i don't know man i don't know like i have
- 50:51to can the mcu do that i mean eventually you
- 50:54can just say yeah we're ending it and then they can do like one
- 50:57kind of wrap-up film show whatever they want to do everyone's coming back for
- 51:01that and then yeah and then just a couple years maybe five years later say hey
- 51:05we want to try this again with a completely younger cast and all the people
- 51:08telling me the mcu is gonna wait five years to release i they can't wait five
- 51:11months well contractually they might not be able I don't know how the rights things work.
- 51:15So contractually, you might have to be like, yes, we have to make a movie every blah, blah years.
- 51:21Maybe. I don't know. I don't know the contracts, but that's a Superman thing.
- 51:24Yeah. So I'm just thinking I'm trying to think, though, but if these things
- 51:28continue to fall off and aren't making the money they once made,
- 51:31eventually they're going to have to do something.
- 51:34So I'm interested to see what happens. It's this time is almost way more interesting
- 51:38than when they were actually making hit after hit after hit.
- 51:41Like, it's like, well, what do you do? How do you pivot? What's your plan?
- 51:44Like, you know, I'm not one of those people who's like screaming about a plan,
- 51:47but I'm kind of interested here.
- 51:48Yeah. You got to make any, and you got to make the general audience miss the characters.
- 51:52Yeah. You know, that's the one thing like with, you know, like with like take
- 51:57Batman, for example, you didn't have a solo movie between 2012 and 2022.
- 52:01But you had, he was in other movies.
- 52:03You know so i don't know if that if that hindered i think
- 52:07actually that might have hindered the matt reese film a little bit i think it would have been
- 52:09a billion dollars if you hadn't had bvs in
- 52:12there but that's just oh to be honest i think the same thing about wonder woman
- 52:15i think wonder woman had a little bit of bvs stink on it yep yeah there was
- 52:19there they were held back you got to make the judge because it's there there
- 52:22was something interesting we're talking about hats on so you got to make sure
- 52:26you take the general audience into consideration that they're gonna they're
- 52:28the ones that really drive these well there aren't enough of us to there's that
- 52:32argument There's the BOF argument that,
- 52:34you know, the shared universe Batman always seems to fail, whether it's Affleck or Keaton,
- 52:39right? Like, even Keaton's resurgence was nothing.
- 52:41Meanwhile, the Matt Reeves solo Batman, you know, while it didn't create a cultural,
- 52:46like, phenomenon, it was just well-received by the general audience so much better.
- 52:51It's fascinating how supernatural, maybe fantastical Batman doesn't even resonate
- 52:56with the general audience, but the more street-level Batman does.
- 53:00I don't think it's hard for me to call what they did with those films a good
- 53:06attempt at it, even though I like Affleck's Batman.
- 53:10And I thought for what he wanted to do in that movie. I mean, Snyder tried, dude.
- 53:14He gave it. Yes, he may not have had the best idea, but he went in there.
- 53:18He shot. He shot his load. He went in there shooting a shot. Yes.
- 53:22Ben Affleck's Batman is going to go down as the biggest waste of potential.
- 53:25I think maybe in DC film history.
- 53:27Speak of hot. I'm dropping hot takes left and right here. I don't think you're wrong.
- 53:33What could have been with that is if DC had just taken their time,
- 53:36and I've told Bill this, and I think I told you guys this at the watch party
- 53:38a couple years ago, is that if you take your time and build that,
- 53:43I would have loved to have seen what pushed that Batman to that point.
- 53:47Would it have been a death in the family story? Maybe, but I don't know.
- 53:50I just would have loved to have seen that, but Marvel was going through the roof at that time.
- 53:54DC panicked, put the floor on the accelerator before realizing
- 53:57what they had in the car you know in terms of an engine so yeah that's something
- 54:01like can you imagine a couple maybe like one or two movies of affleck getting
- 54:04to that breaking point and then becoming the affleck the batman we see in bv
- 54:08that's that would have been something to watch it really would have been something
- 54:11nice and it would have made his arc in the flash a little more yep believable too
- 54:16you know so but yeah the flash bat the keaton batman
- 54:19in the flash that to me is the more fantastical batman he's
- 54:23flying through the air he's doing all that quick stuff i mean
- 54:26i loved seeing it because i'm like wow this guy's like almost 70
- 54:29years old and he's just doing all this crazy stuff i know
- 54:32it wasn't really him but you know just thinking about it you're
- 54:35just thinking about it bruce wayne in that movie yeah i know what you're saying
- 54:37right it's it but yeah it's a version of that batman it's not you know i i it's
- 54:42not the 89 returns i'm with you chris to me it's like 89 universe 89.1 right
- 54:48like it's yeah it's a combination of a bunch of things that happened before
- 54:51it and that's just what he happened to look like like i i take that approach to it myself.
- 54:56But that appearance just does make me wonder, like, you know,
- 55:01the whole Batman's tough law. I'm like, I don't know if I agree with that anymore.
- 55:05The Flash makes me wonder. It just does. And I know Ezra had a lot of issues.
- 55:09I know that didn't help. But I'm just saying it came out at a weird time.
- 55:13I'm just a little nervous. That's all.
- 55:16As these studios continue to screw around, that Teflon is going to wear off.
- 55:20Because you go to the well too much. Because we don't miss the character.
- 55:23Correct. We don't miss the character.
- 55:25If the genre continues to suffer, it's going to rub off on everybody.
- 55:30That's just my two cents. yeah no i mean that's fair and speaking of not giving
- 55:37time to uh miss the characters,
- 55:40we have another superman legacy casting
- 55:44announcement well supergirl there she's going to be in it and they are screen
- 55:50surprise yeah they are screen testing both millie alcock and meg donnelly for
- 55:55the role millie alcock if you guys are watching house of the dragon she She
- 55:59played the young Rhaenyra Targaryen.
- 56:02So if you haven't seen her work. Yes.
- 56:06The young Rhaenyra Targaryen. I'm not going to. Huh?
- 56:11I'm not saying a word about House of the Dragon. Yeah. You don't like it?
- 56:15I do. It's just I feel like I'm actually one of the few in my friend circle that actually do.
- 56:20So nice to hear somebody else like it. So yeah, I love it. So and then.
- 56:24Yeah. Yeah. And then McDonnelly, who was, I believe she kind of a child star in Disney Channel.
- 56:30She was in Zombies musical franchise on there.
- 56:34Just from the look of both of them, I'm going more with Donnelly.
- 56:38The only one who's acting talent I know, though, is Millie Alcox,
- 56:42and she's fantastic. So whoever they pick, I'll be fine with.
- 56:45But Chris, since you know of, you know, Millie's work as well.
- 56:48What do you think about that announcement and who they're looking at?
- 56:51I say, you know, I I'm still concerned that they're packing this film too much,
- 56:56but at least this character makes sense.
- 56:57At least Supergirl makes sense for this film.
- 57:01So I've got concerns about this movie notwithstanding. James Gunn is a heck
- 57:05of a director, but I don't know where they're going.
- 57:07Yeah, in terms of a casting choice, I still think Sasha Kali got a little bit of a short stick.
- 57:12I thought she was fantastic in The Flash, but pivoting away from that,
- 57:16given the multiversal nature of the movie, I mean, I guess it's fine.
- 57:19But I think I'm going to have to just trust James Gunn on this one.
- 57:24I don't know what else to do on it, because this is such a different movie than
- 57:27what I think we're seeing. but this is the one movie that I'm actually looking forward to seeing.
- 57:33I mean, the DC, well, it's going to be the first one so I mean,
- 57:35obviously that's going to be the way to go but this is going to review a lot
- 57:38but I mean just make, can we just not make it, can we just make a good Superman movie, please?
- 57:43Like, maybe some of these are just going to be one-off cameos.
- 57:46Maybe these are just going to be one-off you know, brief cameos like you saw
- 57:51like The Flash and Aquaman and BVS.
- 57:53You know, maybe that's just going to be the thing, they'll just be brief flashes.
- 57:56Everyone really loves all those cameos.
- 58:05It's it's hard when you hear all these castings it's hard to know what we're
- 58:09getting because we don't have any idea of the plot yet right we haven't been
- 58:12it would help if we had a trailer but we have do we did i miss do we or am i
- 58:17just forgetting do we even have a mod or podcast no.
- 58:21That's kind of what I'm wondering. I feel like I need to see a trailer.
- 58:26At the very least, I need to see a trailer. I'm with you. Yeah.
- 58:29And I need to see a trailer, and I need to see a costume.
- 58:32I need to see Corn Sweat in the suit. I got fooled by one. There was a fake
- 58:36one going around, and he looked just like Cavill.
- 58:39And I was like, oh, wow, this is kind of eerie. He looks a lot like Henry Cavill.
- 58:43The rumor of using the Fleischer suit, I think, or the logo,
- 58:47at least, the Fleischer S, intrigues me a little bit.
- 58:50You know using the old i like seeing superman and lois yeah i thought
- 58:53it was fun to pop up every now and then that was a that was a fun pop-up you
- 58:56know kind of as like a first early superman appearance you know kind of
- 58:59a thing but i kind of am intrigued by that but james gunn has got he's got to
- 59:03stick the landing on this one or he's got to the entire his entire job is on
- 59:08the line here with superman legacy his entire universe is online i think if
- 59:12superman legacy bombs we won't even see this brave and the bold movie but his
- 59:16legacy is on the line yeah Yeah, literally,
- 59:18as the next Feige.
- 59:21But either of these girls looks wonderful for Supergirl. While Kaia did a fantastic
- 59:25job, I thought she was a nice little remix of what Cavill should be,
- 59:31what Cavill's Superman was to that world. So I made sense over there.
- 59:35I'm with Chris. I got to trust him. I need to see a trailer before I can judge
- 59:38it. But everyone knows I'm very weary about Superman Legacy.
- 59:41It's nothing new. You all know how I feel about it. So it's all wait and see.
- 59:46But uh yeah i just it does make sense
- 59:49that uh superman characters were in a superman movie so this i can't really
- 59:52make fun of this one too much but i'll uh i'll wait for condiment king to pop
- 59:55up and then i'll crack on that one that would be funny i'd love it but in that
- 1:00:02vein of cameos we things that might be happening characters might be showing up,
- 1:00:08ryan riddle's announced deadpool 3 has wrapped after the strike delay.
- 1:00:14He did a post, I believe, on both Instagram and Twitter. At least I saw it on
- 1:00:18Twitter, so that's where I saw it.
- 1:00:20He said, the suit hides the blood, also sweat, but today with Deadpool rapping,
- 1:00:23it's mostly tears. Tears.
- 1:00:27He went on to thank co-star Hugh Jackman and said, I got to make the movie with
- 1:00:31my closest pals, and that doesn't happen very often.
- 1:00:34Jackman then also said, what a ride. I loved every minute of making this movie.
- 1:00:38Well, not the training and diet, but the other 93.2%.
- 1:00:41To the best cast and crew, thank you. you are all
- 1:00:44aces he also showed a picture of him shaving again
- 1:00:47so this is one of
- 1:00:50the movies that i am really really looking forward to so i'm
- 1:00:54happy it's wrapped i'm happy it's coming what did you guys think about the well
- 1:00:59chris first i haven't talked to you about it what is your anticipation for this
- 1:01:02and you know what do you think it's going to be like can't cannot wait and if
- 1:01:07marvel this is something you know i really would like deadpool in the mcu just
- 1:01:11oh the comedy that just It could be awesome.
- 1:01:14This could be the thing. He could be really the one that carries that universe forward.
- 1:01:18I wouldn't even mind seeing after this, they did the graphic novel Deadpool
- 1:01:22Kills the Marvel Universe.
- 1:01:24Deadpool Kills the MCU. That'd be a great way to reboot. I think that'd be a great reboot.
- 1:01:29And it would make a ton of money out of the way because it's Deadpool going
- 1:01:31out of his way. So it's Deadpool doing Deadpool things.
- 1:01:36So I cannot wait for this. I hope we are going to get more Deadpool.
- 1:01:39That post makes it sort of sounds like this might be it for Reynolds doing it,
- 1:01:42but I don't know. But I'm excited.
- 1:01:45This is probably outside of the Batman part two of the movie I'm most excited
- 1:01:49to see the next couple of years.
- 1:01:51Yeah. Yeah. I'm with Chris all the way on this. I just, I am so highly anticipating
- 1:01:56this movie, not just for Jackman's return, but for Ryan Reynolds.
- 1:02:00He loves Deadpool. He loves doing it.
- 1:02:01The passion he has for this character is second to none.
- 1:02:05I like the first one more than the second one. I think the second one's very
- 1:02:07good. I just, I like the first one a little bit more.
- 1:02:09Sure. but I think this might be exactly what the genre needs.
- 1:02:14A little bit of levity, something that can make fun of itself.
- 1:02:18The jokes in this, it's going to make fun of itself a lot. So just be prepared
- 1:02:22to be, you know, some may say they went over to the top, they beat you over the head with a hammer.
- 1:02:27But I think Deadpool is going to be the thing that kind of rejuvenates life into the genre.
- 1:02:32And then you get into the Batman part too. Like Chris said, like,
- 1:02:35yeah, these are my most highly anticipated movies of the genre right now.
- 1:02:38And i think deadpool is going to save us superman legacy
- 1:02:41is not anticipated it's more anticipated in the sense that please don't
- 1:02:44be a train wreck let me just clarify that 100 100 i'm with
- 1:02:48you yeah i agree with you guys those are my two most
- 1:02:51anticipated right now in this genre and then with superman legacy yeah to me
- 1:02:56it's kind of like i'm very interested because i want to see him do the movie
- 1:03:00but i'm also very nervous because i know how much is riding on it so no disrespect
- 1:03:05to joker or two, by the way. Yeah. Yes. Yeah.
- 1:03:08Because I imagine it's going to be a very depressing movie.
- 1:03:11The musical, that's enough. I mean, fully ado is that I can't wait for that either, but yes.
- 1:03:18All right, gentlemen. Well, that's a wrap on this one. Wonderful.
- 1:03:22Wonderful. Chris, as always, it's great to have you on the show.
