Latest / Vigilante Vibes Podcast / Ep. 237. Who is Blue Marvel in Marvel Comics?!
Transcript
- 0:09Hello Marvel fans, comic geeks and all nerds in between.
- 0:12My name is Megan and I am here with another character breakdown
- 0:15today and it is character that I think it's just not talked about
- 0:17enough and I would really like to see more of them.
- 0:20This is Blue Marvel. Adam Brashear AKA Blue Marvel
- 0:24first appeared in Adam Legend of the Blue Marvel Number One in
- 0:27November 2008. It was created by Chris Grieveau
- 0:30and Matt Broom. Adam Brashear grew up in Chicago
- 0:34and was basically a genius from the start and it didn't take
- 0:37long for people to realize that he was some kind of child
- 0:40prodigy. He went on to Cornell where he
- 0:42played fullback in football and graduated magnum cum laude.
- 0:46On top of that he earned pH DS in both electrical engineering
- 0:50and theoretical physics. So to put it plainly he was the
- 0:53man. He served in the Korean War as
- 0:56AUS Marine and highly decorated, earning 2 Silver Stars.
- 1:00During this time in the military he met Connor Sims who would
- 1:03later become anti man. After the war Adam LED a major
- 1:07scientific project called Project Pegasus to harness
- 1:10antimatter using something called the Negative Reactor.
- 1:13The idea was to create a bridge between the Negative Zone and
- 1:16our universe, giving access to a near infinite source of clean
- 1:20energy. But things went terribly wrong,
- 1:22as they tend to do, and the reactor exploded, exposing both
- 1:26Adam and Connor to an unstable antimatter radiation.
- 1:30Sims basically turned into pure energy, while Adam became kind
- 1:34of a living, stable antimatter reactor with superhuman powers.
- 1:40After that, Adam was known as the Blue Marvel.
- 1:43Before we move forward, what exactly are Blue Marvel's
- 1:46powers? You asked.
- 1:46I'm glad you asked because I have answers for you.
- 1:49Blue Marvel has super strength. He has 9 vulnerability which
- 1:53means Blue Marvel is insanely tough and he once held a
- 1:55hydrogen bomb as it exploded in his hands and he did not even
- 1:58flinch. He's also taking hits from a
- 2:00stacked group of heavy hitters like Miss Marvel, Aries, Iron
- 2:03Man, Wonder Man, and A Century and kept going.
- 2:07On top of that he can survive out in space with no problem and
- 2:11even walk away from a nuclear explosion completely cool,
- 2:14completely unharmed. He has antimatter manipulation,
- 2:18energy manipulation which includes energy constructs,
- 2:22concussive force bolts, energy pulse, energy infusion,
- 2:28telekinesis, matter manipulation, and flights
- 2:32infinite longevity. Basically he is immortal and
- 2:35never ages and won't die unless he's killed.
- 2:38Enhance mental perception. Blue Marvel's mind works on a
- 2:41whole different level than a normal humans.
- 2:43He can pick up and understand things across sensory ranges
- 2:46most people can't even perceive. At one point Superior spider man
- 2:50basically compared him to his own built in electron
- 2:53microscope. He could literally see into
- 2:56spectrums. Who is Monica Rambo?
- 2:59Damage energy, form, and fix what Proxima did.
- 3:03Later on he even used one of his inventions to push his awareness
- 3:08even further and uncover stuff as wild as the imprisonment of a
- 3:11conceptual being. Basically, he is incredibly
- 3:13powerful, very much overpowered. He is considered to be an alpha
- 3:17level threat and once knocked out the Ultimates universe of
- 3:20the Hulk in just one punch. Which is random, but I feel like
- 3:23it's worth mentioning. In 1962, Adam was awarded the
- 3:27Presidential Medal of Freedom by President John F Kennedy, but in
- 3:30the same day he was asked to retire as the Blue Marvel.
- 3:33He had been operating behind a full face helmet, but once it
- 3:37was damaged in battle, people discovered that he was a black
- 3:40man. At that time.
- 3:42That sparked massive controversy because the citizens were too
- 3:45ignorant and too racist to accept a black superhero, and
- 3:48the government pressured him to step down.
- 3:50Reluctantly, he agreed, which is which is sad.
- 3:56Later on, Adam studied A mysterious being called the
- 3:59Infinite, which tried more than once to manifest on Earth.
- 4:03He eventually returned for one last mission, defeating a
- 4:06powerful alien threat and stopping an invasion.
- 4:10After that, the government faked his death and kept tabs on him
- 4:13through an agent named Marlene Frazier, who eventually became
- 4:17his wife. And they had three kids
- 4:19together. So Marlene is either really,
- 4:20really good at her job or really, really bad at it.
- 4:24Adam also settled into a quieter life as a tenured physics
- 4:27professor at the University of Maryland.
- 4:30Back in the early 70s, he briefly joined an early version
- 4:34of the Mighty Avengers. The team came together while
- 4:36investigating a supernatural murder and ended up taking down
- 4:40a group called the Death Walkers before going their separate ways
- 4:43years later. When the IF Not tried to
- 4:45manifest again in 1998, Adam and his son Kevin stopped it by
- 4:50using the antimatter tech, realizing that if they had been
- 4:54fully appeared, it could have destroyed Earth.
- 4:57Things got personal when Connor Sims returned as the Anti Man,
- 5:01now unstable and dangerously obsessed with wiping out racism,
- 5:05even if it meant destroying humanity.
- 5:07His heart was in the right place, but you know, he was just
- 5:10a little too bananas for the mission.
- 5:12After he defeated The Avengers, Adam teamed up with Tony Stark
- 5:18and Reed Richards to stop him. Their final battle was brutal,
- 5:22and Adam ultimately sacrificed himself to neutralize Connor's
- 5:25antimatter energy. But it that wasn't the end,
- 5:30because Adam eventually came back and returned to superhero
- 5:32work. He teamed up with major heroes,
- 5:35helped take down powerful threats, and even worked with
- 5:38cosmic entities like Huatu the Watcher.
- 5:41One time he helped stop an interdimensional crisis
- 5:44involving his own son, Max, who had tried to open a portal to
- 5:48rescue Adam's oldest son, Kevin, from the Neutral Zone.
- 5:52Adam continued balancing science and hero work, often operating
- 5:56out of his underwater base, Kadesh.
- 5:59He later joined teams like the Ultimate, pushing for smarter,
- 6:03less violent approaches to global threats.
- 6:06Over the time, he also developed a relationship with Monica
- 6:10Rambo. He faced everything from
- 6:12alternate realities and black hole disasters to cosmic level
- 6:16threats involving beings like Eternity and the Beyonders.
- 6:19Even after the death of Doctor Strange, Adam was pulled into
- 6:23the new Defenders team, traveling beyond the multiverse
- 6:26itself. There, he questioned even the
- 6:29highest cosmic powers, showing that no matter how far things
- 6:33went, he never stopped thinking like a scientist.
- 6:37Overall, Adam Brashear or Blue Marvel story is a mix of
- 6:41brilliant sacrifice, navigating both human and cosmic level
- 6:45challenges as a scientist, a veteran, and a superhero doctor.
- 6:50Adam Brashear is a man of many talents, but lived with the
- 6:53hardship of being black in a world that only saw him as that,
- 6:57but that never stopped him from doing what he felt was right and
- 7:00what the right thing for the world would be, because that's
- 7:03what a hero does. So that is Blue Marvel, that is
- 7:06Adam Brashear. Like I said, I don't think he's
- 7:08talked about enough and I hope we actually get more of him in
- 7:12the comics he was on in the Ultimates, but I'd like I'd
- 7:16really like to see more of him. Like, why not a blue Marvel
- 7:21comic run a solo? That would be cool.
- 7:23I think it'd be fun. So yeah, I hope you liked this
- 7:26episode. I hope you learned something and
- 7:28I hope you will like and subscribe.
- 7:30So that being said, have a marvelous day.
