Latest / Strictly Business / The 5 o' Clock Shadow with Schalk Louw
Transcript
- 0:00You're listening to Strictly Business Podcast with Lindsay Williams.
- 0:05The JSC has closed its doors for another day, so it's time for the five o'clock
- 0:08shadow.
- 0:08And as always on a Thursday, I speak to Skulk Lowe, Portfolio Manager at PSG
- 0:15Wealth Old Oak in Cape Town.
- 0:17I don't think I've ever seen such ridiculous volatility.
- 0:20And not volatility from the beginning of the week to the end of the week, Skulk.
- 0:26It's every single day.
- 0:28And sometimes there are three different market trends during one day.
- 0:31You wake up in the morning and the Far East is down and the U.S.
- 0:35futures are down maybe 1% or something.
- 0:37And then someone wakes up in the morning, we won't say who, and says something.
- 0:41And then the markets reverse.
- 0:43And then in the evening, people say, well, wait a second, we don't believe him.
- 0:46So it goes in the opposite direction again.
- 0:48It's all over the place.
- 0:50It's extraordinary.
- 0:51And thank goodness we're not traders, Skulk.
- 0:53Thank goodness you're a long-term investor.
- 0:57Yeah, thank goodness.
- 0:58I was sitting on Monday and listening to a commentator
- 1:06reading out the top performers and the worst performers for the day.
- 1:10And I think it was the first or the best or the second.
- 1:12Yeah, the best performer was Cecil,
- 1:14but the second best performer was the worst performer for Monday.
- 1:20But I mean, the second best performer was Anglos.
- 1:23And he said, oh, this is fun.
- 1:25Fantastic.
- 1:26Anglo-American, that is up there.
- 1:28It's actually end of the day, 6%, 6 point something percent higher.
- 1:32And then I just realized, wait a minute, this morning I switched on my computer.
- 1:38And one of the first things that caught me, because it's in the A's, that caught
- 1:44me, I was Anglo-American being down something like
- 1:468%. So that specific day, don't quote me, it could have been 12, it could have been
- 1:5114%.
- 1:53But that specific day, one of the largest stocks on the day is at a swing from being
- 1:58down close to
- 2:006-odd percent, ending the day as one of the top performing, ending up 6%.
- 2:04And likewise with some of these other companies.
- 2:07I think, you know, I like following my goals sometimes.
- 2:11And goldfields that specific day, that was down 10-point-something percent during the
- 2:18morning,
- 2:18ended the day close to 2% positive.
- 2:21So that's in a sort of a one sentence or two sentence summing up the current
- 2:28market conditions.
- 2:29You will literally have a market that could swing 5%, 6% either way.
- 2:36And that's showing us the type of volatility, this type of uncertainty.
- 2:40Because the bulls can't decide, you know, is the bears actually winning?
- 2:46And likewise for the bears.
- 2:48It's this massive, massive.
- 2:50I see, you know that thing that usually stands in front of the New York Stock
- 2:57Exchange?
- 2:59We had it on bulls and bears as well.
- 3:00That bear that's trying to pull down this bull.
- 3:02Yes, the famous statue, yes, yeah.
- 3:04I'm seeing that every day.
- 3:06I mean, this is now the best analogy for markers that we're currently seeing.
- 3:11I think it was Monday morning, and what had happened was over the weekend, Donald
- 3:18Trump had woken up and thought he should have a bit of a punt over the
- 3:20weekend.
- 3:22So he put some market making news out there.
- 3:24He says you've got 48 hours.
- 3:26And if you don't open the Straits of Hormuz within 48 hours,
- 3:29I'm going to obliterate you.
- 3:31Take out all your energy infrastructure.
- 3:33You know the story.
- 3:34And everyone was worrying.
- 3:35And then on Monday, the markets opened and gold was down in dollar terms 10%
- 3:40because the dollar was stronger.
- 3:42But U.S.
- 3:43bond yields spiked.
- 3:45Market indices were all substantially lower.
- 3:49And then he said, I don't know, and I'll give you another five days.
- 3:52And the markets went through the roof.
- 3:53But gold was down at 4,100 or something.
- 3:57At the end of the day, it was 4,450 or something ridiculous.
- 4:02Three $400 swings in gold.
- 4:05It's astonishing.
- 4:06And I thought of you, and I thought, how do you get on the phone this morning to
- 4:11your clients?
- 4:13And then what do you say in the afternoon when it's reversed?
- 4:15It's testing your communication skills, Emma.
- 4:18I must say.
- 4:19Four seasons in one day.
- 4:22But Elaine, did you read, I don't know the truth, I don't know the source, but I read
- 4:28somewhere there was this massive,
- 4:30massive trade in the options market that literally something like 20 minutes or
- 4:34just literally just before that
- 4:36Trump's truth report.
- 4:37Five minutes actually in some cases.
- 4:41Yeah, it's something like that.
- 4:42We're this massive, massive long on the S&P 500.
- 4:46We're talking about one or two million dollars.
- 4:49We're talking about a massive long position in the S&P 500 and a massive
- 4:56short position in
- 4:58oil.
- 5:00You know, that can't be.
- 5:02That can't be just a coincidence.
- 5:04No, of course it can't.
- 5:06Nobody's that skillful.
- 5:08And the other thing is that it came from several different sources.
- 5:10And one of the platforms that was used apparently was Polymarket.
- 5:14I don't know if you follow Polymarket.
- 5:17It's a very sophisticated trading platform where you can literally punt on
- 5:24anything.
- 5:25But anyway, the point is Polymarket had some deals and they're looking at it.
- 5:29But if you're going to inside a trade and you're too big to go to one particular
- 5:35platform in
- 5:37isolation, you have to go elsewhere.
- 5:39And I bet every single other platform would take a decent order.
- 5:43was getting the same sort of orders as well.
- 5:46And we know what it was.
- 5:50We know from where it stemmed.
- 5:52But of course, will it ever be followed up?
- 5:55I very much doubt it during this current administration.
- 5:58Someone knew something from right from the top, I think, Skull, don't you?
- 6:02For sure, for sure.
- 6:04Like I said, it just can't be a coincidence.
- 6:07It's absolutely not.
- 6:08But I mean, that's the current market conditions.
- 6:12Wars are not only...
- 6:15A fort with missiles and the A's and boots on the ground, it's not being done.
- 6:22in financial markets.
- 6:25That's a crazy war.
- 6:26That's a crazy war.
- 6:28But anyway.
- 6:29Yes, but anyway, the important thing is, what have you done?
- 6:32Have you done anything?
- 6:33Are you still sitting with your positions, but just a little bit slightly,
- 6:41a slightly more frazzled scalp, though, than the last time we spoke, which
- 6:47incidentally you were two weeks ago because of technical problems last week.
- 6:49Yeah, Lindsay, I think you know I've been
- 6:52been been been been having this this podcast for for many many years and and
- 6:59you know over the past few months uh i've been
- 7:01really cautious and and that cautiousness did to a certain extent um made me
- 7:06take some chips off the table so
- 7:08to speak um but but i'm not just my portfolio's currently is is sitting with
- 7:15the the largest
- 7:17cash position um
- 7:19I don't think it had a larger cash position in COVID.
- 7:23So it's definitely sitting more defensively.
- 7:28But now you need to start looking.
- 7:29Start looking at opportunities.
- 7:33Your magnificent seven.
- 7:35I saw a heat map today of the S&P 500.
- 7:39And when you look at the map, it sort of looked red.
- 7:43But it's only red, well, mostly red with these magnificent sevens.
- 7:48not so magnificent anymore.
- 7:51But if you look at the rest of the S&P 500,
- 7:53it's actually held up pretty solidly in this really turmoil market because when
- 8:00you look at
- 8:01the remaining, let's call it 493 stocks, they're mostly positive, they're mostly
- 8:06green.
- 8:06So we've seen a bit of a disconnect coming from that side as well.
- 8:11And that's going to create some opportunities.
- 8:14When you look at the likes of Microsoft, that is now down 31%, 32%.
- 8:19It's still the second largest company, one of the best managed companies,
- 8:23and a product which has been the largest company 25 years, and we will most
- 8:29probably sit here,
- 8:31you and I, 25 years from now.
- 8:33Yeah, of course.
- 8:34I'll be here in the same seat talking to you, Scott.
- 8:36Absolutely no problem.
- 8:38Same nonsense, I'll talk to you.
- 8:39You'll say the same rubbish back to me.
- 8:41Yeah, of course we will be.
- 8:43Carry on.
- 8:44But I think...
- 8:46Kids, grandkids, those people will still have Microsoft around.
- 8:51And giving you the opportunity now to buy something 31% cheaper than what you would
- 8:57have bought it.
- 8:57I agree with you entirely.
- 8:59It's a blue chip.
- 9:00And if it's down 31%, there's a reason it's down 31%
- 9:03because of AI purportedly taking over software data that
- 9:10Microsoft has developed and has made its fortune on.
- 9:13But Microsoft isn't stupid.
- 9:15Microsoft will turn it around.
- 9:16It's not like BlackBerry or something like that, which went out the window.
- 9:20We never saw it again.
- 9:21Microsoft will bounce back, I think.
- 9:23And that's not a trading recommendation, by the way, or an investment
- 9:26recommendation.
- 9:28What about Tesla?
- 9:30Also technically in a bear market, more than 20% off its highs.
- 9:31I mean, you can think what you like about Musk, and I don't like him at all.
- 9:34I think he's a reprehensible character.
- 9:37But goodness me, he's clever.
- 9:39And something will happen to Tesla that will...
- 9:42get it back in its position as the top of the heap of electric vehicles and whatever
- 9:49else is attached
- 9:51to the Tesla share price at the time that he's dreamed up.
- 9:53So I think if you are liquid, Skulk, then there are lots of opportunities for you.
- 9:59But I'm saying this humbly, don't rush in yet because I think there's a lot more to
- 10:06come.
- 10:07No, I looked at some ETFs yesterday.
- 10:13And it's just themes.
- 10:14It always gives you a nice one where you look at and I do it per calendar year,
- 10:18and I've done it for the past close to 10 years, where you look at I take a
- 10:25commodity ETF,
- 10:27MSCI world value, MSCI world growth, developed markets, emerging markets, all
- 10:33these different themes.
- 10:35And it's interesting when you look at it.
- 10:36And where we sit in currency, you pretty much got to repeat.
- 10:40of the theme that we've seen in 2022, where commodities are currently leading.
- 10:47You had in second place, but quite far down second place, we had value stocks,
- 10:53which usually tend to do better in volatile, uncertain times,
- 11:00where you see some people go back to valuations rather than hype.
- 11:05And usually at the bottom of the list in 2022, it's no different.
- 11:08where the U.S.
- 11:09growth stocks were the worst performers.
- 11:12And when you look at the current year to date, that is like following that trend to
- 11:18the T.
- 11:18And the only difference is we're not nearly done.
- 11:23We're not even close to seeing the lows that we've seen in 2022.
- 11:28And I do feel And that doesn't make me a bear,
- 11:32but I do feel that valuations are still more stretched than we've seen it in 2022.
- 11:38And I do think that our environment compared to a, let's call it a
- 11:44post-current environment,
- 11:46I think is worse.
- 11:48It's worse than the environment that we've seen three years ago.
- 11:49So, yes, I agree in totality with you.
- 11:51I think people shouldn't look at this as this is the buying opportunity for the
- 11:57broad market.
- 11:57The market has done what it's done.
- 11:59JSE, I think on one stage, was off 15% from its highest.
- 12:01That's as bad as it's going to get back in.
- 12:04I think you should be a stock picker.
- 12:07Really be selective on what you buy.
- 12:10I won't go and buy the S&P 500 now,
- 12:13but I do think to start nibbling on something like Microsoft is not a bad
- 12:18idea.
- 12:19I wouldn't necessarily go out and buy the JSE, but going into a like stuff, a
- 12:25Richemont,
- 12:27which is 22% down year to date, Fifth worst performing stock on the JSE.
- 12:32A company that's, I still think, you know, luxury goods are defensive products.
- 12:39But also when you look at the Richmond, Richmond's sitting with 7.6 billion euros
- 12:46in cash, no debt.
- 12:487.6 billion.
- 12:50What do you think they're going to do with this cash in this, let's call it, bad
- 12:54market environment?
- 12:56They'll also look for opportunities.
- 12:56and when things recovery eventually again.
- 12:59So that's where I'm at currently.
- 13:01I still sit with a large amount of cash, but I do see some opportunities sticking
- 13:08out.
- 13:08Do I think the market has done, did we see the correction?
- 13:13No, I still think this volatile,
- 13:18let's call it uncertain environment is going to persist for the next few weeks.
- 13:22Okay, I hope your mind is mossy now and fertile, Scott, because I'm going to ask
- 13:28you a question.
- 13:30And it does sound as though it is.
- 13:32Okay, so here's the question.
- 13:34I believe that the gold price peaked that day that I said it would peak or the day
- 13:37before
- 13:38I said it would peak.
- 13:39And it did peak at $5,626 per ounce intraday on the futures market.
- 13:45Okay, it's not the spot market, it's the futures market.
- 13:47The spot market was less than that.
- 13:51because of the contango.
- 13:52Now, it is currently 4,555.
- 13:57That's the spot price.
- 13:59Is there a chance that the gold shares will continue to be in a bull
- 14:06market and may even go higher and may go to new highs simply because of the
- 14:12earnings that will come through,
- 14:14even with a gold price $1,000 per ounce less than the peak it achieved?
- 14:17Or have we seen the peak?
- 14:20In Lindsay Williams' world, have we seen the peak in both the gold price in US
- 14:26dollar terms and also the shares in RAND terms,
- 14:28for example, on the JSC?
- 14:30That's my question of the week for you.
- 14:32Can I answer you next year this time?
- 14:34Yeah, that works.
- 14:36No, no, Lindsay, I've got to answer for you.
- 14:38So we had this golf association there in the,
- 14:43let's call it the build-up to the highs in gold.
- 14:45And you called it absolutely spot on.
- 14:49It was maybe a day or two left.
- 14:52It was one day early, yeah.
- 14:54Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 14:55It was spot on, But we also had the conversation to the buildup.
- 15:02You often ask me, are the miners reacting exactly the same as the gold miners
- 15:08reacting,
- 15:10the actual gold miners?
- 15:12So, well, originally, the gold miners did.
- 15:14But that, let's call it January, February, the gold miners sort of, as if the market
- 15:17didn't.
- 15:19believe the gold price will stay at those $5,000, $5,400 level,
- 15:23which now subsequently shown to be the right view to have.
- 15:29These miners are, look at the gold fields.
- 15:32They mine their gold still at current levels at $1,800 per ounce.
- 15:38When you look at Anglo Gold, similar story.
- 15:41Harmony, a little bit higher, they $2,000, $2,100 per ounce.
- 15:46But, but.
- 15:49Let's call it average.
- 15:50Let's make it $2,000.
- 15:52Our miners are mining this metal, $2,000, and they're still selling it,
- 15:57$4,000, $4,500.
- 16:01They've still got a gross profit margin of more than 50%.
- 16:06They're still sitting with zero debt.
- 16:09None of these miners really got debt anymore.
- 16:11And so they're pumping cash.
- 16:13So, yes, I do agree with you.
- 16:14I will feel to your question.
- 16:16that eventually as the results come through,
- 16:19that it's going to surprise the market and gold miners will justify
- 16:27that it's because of the price levels it's trading.
- 16:28But here's the thing.
- 16:30Here's the thing.
- 16:31I'm looking at this war and we can go left or right.
- 16:34I'm not going to try and call an end to the war because that'll just be stupid.
- 16:40Because as you just mentioned, Trump went from,
- 16:45we're going to blow up every power station in Iran if you don't do this and this and
- 16:52this by
- 16:54noon that time.
- 16:56And hours later, he said, well, hey, there we go.
- 16:57Now we've got a great tool to date.
- 17:00conversation and we're going to not attack Iran for five days and yeah and Iran went
- 17:07like what did we miss and we're clearly on the same WhatsApp group so we're not going
- 17:14to try and
- 17:14call but eventually hopefully
- 17:18all these parties will sit around the table and we'll see an end to this war
- 17:25what will happen then
- 17:27so firstly nobody will convince me
- 17:30that that inflation is not going to kick up from current levels nobody it already
- 17:37is it's bubbling skunk we've seen all the good
- 17:39numbers we've seen the good number from south africa at three percent we've seen
- 17:44the good number from the united states at 2.4 percent forget
- 17:46those numbers even if it's just transient remember
- 17:48that phrase transient oh yeah even if it's just six months the point is it'll shock
- 17:55the markets and you can see the bond market for
- 17:57goodness sake the u.s 30 year nearly went to 5%.
- 17:59The U.S.
- 18:0010-year was in the mid-440s.
- 18:02People know that inflation numbers are going to be horrible in the next three to
- 18:07six months.
- 18:09Yeah.
- 18:11And then you get certain very intelligent individuals that keep on explaining to us
- 18:15that, yes,
- 18:17inflation is going to be a problem, but we're going to be running into a
- 18:19recession.
- 18:21When I say we, the U.S.
- 18:23are going to be running into a recession way before then.
- 18:27Nobody's going to convince me again that this is not going to put a lid on economic
- 18:33growth worldwide.
- 18:35What we're seeing and experiencing currently,
- 18:37I'm convinced that that's going to negatively impact economic growth globally
- 18:44and could even
- 18:46put countries, U.S.
- 18:46specifically, in a recession.
- 18:48So see where I'm getting.
- 18:50We're already saying we're going to see higher inflation.
- 18:53I'm telling you, we're going to see a much lower economic growth than people
- 19:00forecasted going into
- 19:022026.
- 19:04And we've already seen the employment numbers coming out from the US not really
- 19:08shooting the lights out.
- 19:11You again, see where I'm going.
- 19:12There's a stagflation written all over it.
- 19:16But then on the other hand, you've got President Trump that made it blatantly
- 19:22clear before he went to do this walk.
- 19:24On that Fox interview in February, he said three things.
- 19:28He said, firstly, the U.S.
- 19:30should undoubtedly have the lowest interest rates in the world.
- 19:35Secondly, a 1%
- 19:37drop in the interest rates or the Fed interest rates should see an
- 19:44increase in the GDP of 600 billion U.S. dollars.
- 19:51and I 2% drop in interest rates could wipe the deficit in totality, which I don't
- 19:57believe,
- 19:57but that's what he said.
- 19:58Nonsense.
- 19:59Everything you've just said is nonsense, but it's not what you're saying.
- 20:02It's just what you're reporting upon.
- 20:04It's not going to happen.
- 20:07It might be not going to happen, but we know he's going to try.
- 20:10That's Trump.
- 20:12He's going to try.
- 20:13So when the dust settles around the conflict in the Middle East, which might
- 20:19take some time,
- 20:21we know the next step will be.
- 20:23We're going to lower interest rates.
- 20:25We're going to lower interest rates to the lowest level.
- 20:25We're going to try and reach the lowest levels in the world.
- 20:29And what's that going to create?
- 20:31Well, that's going to create a much, much weaker dollar.
- 20:35And you've got a much weaker dollar, you've got a much higher gold price.
- 20:39So, yes, I think that the gold price or the move that we've seen from
- 20:46$5,000-odd, you're right.
- 20:48That was the anticipation of the most.
- 20:52or let's call it the price of the most anticipated war ever.
- 20:56Everybody knew this war was going to happen in Iran.
- 21:00And the gold price just reflected that prior to the actual shots being fired.
- 21:05But now, did it change the reason why you should be investing in gold?
- 21:10Hell no.
- 21:11I think it's actually now even more important to have some gold in your
- 21:16portfolio.
- 21:17Very good.
- 21:18Good speech, Skull, and well backed up.
- 21:22I hope you are right.
- 21:23Now, let's have a look at some numbers, shall we?
- 21:25Because I've got a confusion here, a conundrum.
- 21:29Actually, I look at a site called investing.com and I look at a site called
- 21:36the CRB
- 21:38Index site.
- 21:40It's from Trading Economics.
- 21:42But anyway, we'll get to that in a moment.
- 21:44But anyway, what I do know is...
- 21:46The dollar round is 1691, which has barely changed from yesterday.
- 21:47The British pound against the round 2263 with the pound slightly weaker against the
- 21:52round.
- 21:53And the euro round is 1958,
- 21:57a third of a percent down for the euro.
- 22:02Euro dollar is 115.75.
- 22:04Let's get on to commodities now.
- 22:05I've got the gold price at 4560, let's call it, which is up around about 2%.
- 22:12The Platinum price is up 2.75% to 19.45%
- 22:18and the Palladium price is up 3.25% at 14.39%.
- 22:24As I speak, my internet goes down.
- 22:26You've had some problems in that department.
- 22:28So I'll give you another couple of pages.
- 22:30I've got the South African 10-year bond yield at 8.97%, which is 6.5 basis points
- 22:36weaker.
- 22:36So it's changed its big figure from 9 to 8.
- 22:39the S&P 500 futures.
- 22:41are 66.59, which is up 0.8%, I think.
- 22:46And what else have we got?
- 22:48The US 10-year bond, that's been interesting.
- 22:52It's been fascinating.
- 22:53The bond market suddenly, as you get older, becomes more interesting than all
- 22:58the other things like Bitcoin.
- 23:004.32%.
- 23:00Speaking of Bitcoin,
- 23:01Bitcoin is sort of establishing itself around this 69 to 71 level in the
- 23:08short term.
- 23:09It's now 71,278, Skulk.
- 23:13Yeah, my internet is definitely down.
- 23:14What have you got for oil?
- 23:16Because I've got two different oil prices.
- 23:20Let's quickly see.
- 23:21Because I've got oil at Brent crude at like 101.40 on my CRB screen.
- 23:28And yet on my investment.com screen, it says it's 96.60, which is correct.
- 23:34There's obviously a difference between the futures markets that they're looking at.
- 23:38One's looking at, for example, the March expiry and the next one's looking at April
- 23:44or something like that.
- 23:46What have you got?
- 23:48I've got the Brent price in front of me and that's currently trading at 101.52.
- 23:51That's down, let's call it, just close to 3% from the back.
- 23:55Exactly.
- 23:56That's exactly what I've got as well.
- 23:59And West Texas Intermediary is 89.88.
- 24:02It's below $90 now.
- 24:05Yeah, I've got that as well.
- 24:07OK, so that's what we'll go with.
- 24:10Oil price above $100 a barrel, let's call it that, and that is horrible for the
- 24:15world economy.
- 24:17It doesn't matter if it stays there and doesn't go to the new highs of $120, $150,
- 24:20even some people calling it $200 per barrel.
- 24:23The fact is that it was, at some stage in the last 52 weeks,
- 24:28$58.40 per barrel.
- 24:31So it's doubled in price, essentially.
- 24:33And we've got to get used to that.
- 24:35And as you quite rightly said, inflation is going to ignite.
- 24:38And when inflation ignites, the peasants, they are revolting.
- 24:44Because the biggest enemy to anybody, whether they're an investor or a shopper,
- 24:49is inflation, Scott.
- 24:51Oh, 100 percent.
- 24:53That is the biggest.
- 24:55Because remember, we went into this year, not just as South Africans,
- 24:58but the world was looking at not a matter of if.
- 25:03It was just hard.
- 25:05How many rate cuts will we be seeing this year?
- 25:08And I know some people were forecasting two, some were saying even three rate
- 25:13cuts.
- 25:13But rate cuts was the order of the day for 2026.
- 25:16Well, we went from 28 February, there was a 60% probability,
- 25:22and that's according to the CME Fed tool, 60% probability that the Fed will cut
- 25:29rates at the
- 25:31April meeting.
- 25:33As we sit here, there's now no chance.
- 25:34zero chance for a rate cut in April, there's actually just close to a 20%
- 25:39probability that they'll have a rate hike.
- 25:43So it just shows you how things have changed.
- 25:45Yes, we've got the SARP meeting tomorrow, the Reserve Bank meeting tomorrow.
- 25:49And as we sit here, the polls are telling us that it should be a no change.
- 25:56And I do agree with that.
- 25:58I don't think they should be jumping the gun because the Reserve Bank was...
- 26:02very slow lowering rates.
- 26:04And why am I saying that?
- 26:05When you look at the past 20 years,
- 26:08the difference between the RIPA rate and the inflation rate was roughly 1.5%.
- 26:13So that's just subtracting the inflation rate from the RIPA rate.
- 26:18So when that gap is high, meaning that inflation is way lower,
- 26:23that gives the Reserve Bank a bit of ammunition to lower rates,
- 26:28which it didn't really do as aggressively as some of our international counterparts.
- 26:33As we sit here, that difference is more than 3%.
- 26:35So hopefully...
- 26:37Hopefully, the Asia Reserve Bank will look at this and say, well, as slow as we were
- 26:44in lowering rates,
- 26:46if we need to start hiking with higher inflation, hopefully we'll just be as
- 26:51slow.
- 26:53Yeah, we'll wait for that decision.
- 26:55Over the next few weeks, the next two or three months, it's going to be very
- 27:01difficult for the South African Reserve Bank to juggle.
- 27:03And it has a juggling act every time it meets.
- 27:05But this time it's very difficult.
- 27:06What do they say?
- 27:07This is just a moment in time.
- 27:09So inflation will come back down again.
- 27:11So we're not going to keep rates on hold or even raise rates.
- 27:15We are going to continue with our cutting policy.
- 27:18On the other hand, they'll say, well, we've got to keep inflation under control
- 27:22because that's our mandate.
- 27:24So we'll see.
- 27:26Skulk, before we get to the ups and downs on the JSC, please tell me about Remgrove.
- 27:29Numbers out today.
- 27:31I thought it looked really good.
- 27:32I mean This is a company, you know, that I follow and really like.
- 27:36And for T's and C's purposes, I'm invested in as well.
- 27:40And the main reason for buying this company, well, the two main reasons.
- 27:46One, when you look at the portfolio of stocks, it gives you a great South African
- 27:52Inc. representation.
- 27:54And we know it's been the place to be invested.
- 27:57And then secondly, it's the fact that it...
- 28:01trade it.
- 28:02I mean, if you look at the since 2009, the average discount to its intrinsic value
- 28:09was roughly about 20, 21%.
- 28:11And for the past few years, we've seen this company trade well above the 40%
- 28:15discount to its intrinsic value.
- 28:17Market telling the company, come on, you need to now either start unlocking value
- 28:23or give us the shares back.
- 28:25And we know they've done that.
- 28:27They've done quite a few innovative things over the past few years.
- 28:29Most recently, selling the F&B exposure.
- 28:34But the companies within Remgrove did really well.
- 28:37Mediclinic, phenomenal, really good set of results.
- 28:40Even Rainbow Chickens, which has always been sort of a tongue-in-the-cheek type of
- 28:46company, that did well.
- 28:48And when you look at the company's intrinsic value, now trading slightly
- 28:53below the 40% levels,
- 28:55but let's call it a 38-odd percent discount, I still believe...
- 28:58And it's offering a lot of value.
- 29:01They're sitting with quite a bit of cash.
- 29:04That's, I think, a positive.
- 29:08And yeah, in general, it's just a really, really good set of results.
- 29:12Very good.
- 29:13A nice, robust Remgrove assessment there from a shareholder at Skunk Low.
- 29:19Let's have a look at some of the other shares on the JSC today.
- 29:22Diskem up 6.75%, Karoo up 6.3%, Northern Platinum 6.2% of the good.
- 29:28Here come the diggers.
- 29:29Northern's followed by Harmony up nearly 6%.
- 29:32And Anglo Gold is 5.2% higher on the close.
- 29:36On the downside, there isn't a day where Tungela is not either at the top or at the
- 29:40bottom.
- 29:40Tungela today down 7.2%. Another digger, but of a specific commodity.
- 29:46Property company, Hammerson, down 4.1%.
- 29:48Boxer.
- 29:49down 3.75%, Exaro down 3.1%, Motus down two and a third.
- 29:56Skulk, any outside of those?
- 29:59Yeah, Emerson and Motus ex-diff scenario,
- 30:04but nothing really standing out.
- 30:06I think in general it was just a solid recovery day in the market.
- 30:10Let's hope it's not a dead cat bounce.
- 30:13How are the indices?
- 30:14I noticed that the ones that you have been watching very keenly for a couple of years
- 30:20are doing very well today.
- 30:22Give us the details, please.
- 30:24Yeah, the resources did well.
- 30:26I mean, we could have started there at 4.8%, but as I mentioned, it was across
- 30:29the board.
- 30:31Today, we've seen industrials that actually were up 2.3% as well,
- 30:36and financials up over 3%, asset property up over 1%.
- 30:41So, yeah, in general, it was just across the board a very, very solid day.
- 30:45But again, mostly driven by recovery and some of these resource stocks.
- 30:50I'm just going to give you the S&P to just to conjure with in the last few hours of
- 30:55trading.
- 30:5566.50 for the June futures, up 0.7%.
- 30:59I would say that they'll be flat or down by the end of the day because people are
- 31:06not taking into account the fact that Iran has had a look at this
- 31:08so-called 15-point plan from Trump, which he probably wrote in crayon or something.
- 31:10And...
- 31:11They've just said, sorry, surely you jest, Mr.
- 31:15President.
- 31:16And it's not going to be good.
- 31:18So that's just me and just following the pattern of the last few weeks.
- 31:22Skullclaw is a portfolio manager at PSG Wealth Old Oak Division in Cape Town.
- 31:27And that was the 5 o'clock shadow.
