- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it is Wednesday.
- 0:15It's the 12th of November. Great to have your company on
- 0:18this day, this day of both the awesome and the utterly
- 0:23ridiculous. A couple of amazing things as
- 0:26I've been reading about today. Firstly, you know back in 1970
- 0:31on the 12th of November, there was this enormous sperm whale
- 0:33that that washed up on the beach in Oregon and they didn't know
- 0:37what to do with this 8 tonne corpse that was rotting and
- 0:40smelling. So they decided let's get the
- 0:43local council workers with crates of dynamite to blow up
- 0:47this whale into such small pieces that the crabs and the
- 0:49seagulls would clear it. So they cleared the crowd 400
- 0:53metres back, ignited the dynamite and it blew this
- 0:57almighty explosion which just sent chunks of whale like over
- 1:02half a kilometre all around, smashing cars and landing on
- 1:06people and making a mess and unfortunately.
- 1:10Most of the whale. Was.
- 1:12Untouched and so they had to bury it in the beach after that.
- 1:14So that is just such a disgusting story.
- 1:18I love it so much. But then we've also achieved
- 1:22brilliance. On this day in 2014, we were
- 1:25able to land a probe on a comet flying through space.
- 1:31Isn't that amazing? Yep, we we landed a spacecraft
- 1:35on a bit of rock. Flying through space.
- 1:38We're so. Clever.
- 1:39And so. Stupid all at the.
- 1:40Same time. But cleverness and stupidness.
- 1:43Aside, this letter that was written all those years ago to
- 1:46those people was written to basically convince them that
- 1:50life in Jesus, despite the madness of the world around us,
- 1:54is actually incredible. And so those early disciples,
- 1:58even though all the pressure was on them to ditch their faith,
- 2:01should hold onto it because it was worth holding onto.
- 2:04So today, Paul and Silas and Timothy and are going to write
- 2:08about how to live to please God and the incredible hope that we
- 2:12find in him in the resurrection. So let's read that together.
- 2:17So we let us read First Thessalonians chapter 4.
- 2:30Finally, dear brothers and sisters, we urge you in the name
- 2:34of the Lord Jesus to live in a way that pleases God as we have
- 2:39taught you. You live this way already, and
- 2:42we encourage you to do so even more for you.
- 2:45Remember what we taught you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.
- 2:50God's will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all
- 2:55sexual sin. Then each of you will control
- 2:58his own body and live in holiness and honour, not in
- 3:03lustful passion like the pagans who do not know God in His ways.
- 3:08Never harm or cheat a fellow believer in this matter by
- 3:11violating his wife. For the Lord Avengers all such
- 3:15sins. As we have solemnly warned you
- 3:18before, God has called us to live holy lives, not impure
- 3:23lives. Therefore, anyone who refuses to
- 3:26live by these rules is not disobeying human teaching, but
- 3:30is rejecting God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.
- 3:36But we don't need to write to you about the importance of
- 3:38loving each other, for God Himself has taught you to love
- 3:41one another. Indeed, you already show your
- 3:44love for all the believers throughout Macedonia.
- 3:48Even so, dear brothers and sisters, we urge you to love
- 3:52them even more. Make it your goal to live a
- 3:57quiet life, minding your own business and working with your
- 4:01hands, just as we instructed you before.
- 4:05Then people who are not believers will respect the way
- 4:08you live, and you will not need to depend on others.
- 4:13And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know
- 4:17what will happen to the believers who have died, so you
- 4:20will not grieve like people that have no hope for.
- 4:24Since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we
- 4:28also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back
- 4:32with him the believers who have died.
- 4:36We tell you this directly from the Lord.
- 4:38We who are still living when the Lord returns will not meet him
- 4:42ahead of those who have died. For the Lord himself will come
- 4:46down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice
- 4:49of the Archangel, and with the trumpet call of God.
- 4:54First. The believers who have died will
- 4:55rise from their graves. Then together with them, we who
- 4:59are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in
- 5:03the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.
- 5:06Then we will be with the Lord forever.
- 5:09So encourage each other with these words.
- 5:22Jesus, thank you for this encouragement.
- 5:23Thank you for the hope that we have in you.
- 5:27Thank You that mankind's mortal enemy, literally mortal enemy,
- 5:32death that comes to all of us is not the end, and that in You and
- 5:39Your gift to us we have this everlasting life that we will
- 5:43live in Your glorious presence. And Lord, I also thank you for
- 5:49this wonderful passage that speaks of the goodness of a
- 5:54quiet life lived in honest work serving You.
- 5:59Our Lord, so often we can be caught up thinking we need to be
- 6:03out there. We need to be vocal, We need to
- 6:05be evangelistic. And yes, those of us who are
- 6:07called to be that should. But we hear this encouragement
- 6:12to your people to live good, honest, quiet lives, working
- 6:17hard and providing this example that points people to you.
- 6:23So Lord, help us be your upright people, living in a way that
- 6:28pleases you and blesses all those around us.
- 6:32You're a good God, and we thank you for your love.
- 6:36And we pray all of this in your precious name, Jesus, Amen.
