- 0:02Welcome to Impact Ready, a show dedicated to helping you elevate
- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hello, welcome to the Impact Ready podcast.
- 0:24Thank you for being here. We are getting towards the end
- 0:28of summer here is mid August. So we have a couple weeks left.
- 0:31You can feel that energy shifting a little bit.
- 0:33I kind of like it. I like, I like going into the
- 0:36fall. So I hope everything is ending
- 0:39well for you this summer. For me, there is a lot of
- 0:43shifting energy. If you've been following along,
- 0:46paying attention to social media or listening to this podcast,
- 0:49you know that I've been getting treatment for breast cancer the
- 0:52last six months, and I actually just finished all of my
- 0:56chemotherapy. I had a total of 16 infusions of
- 1:01chemo, which is wild. I never actually thought that I
- 1:04was going to have to do that much, but last Monday was my
- 1:08last one, and I'm so excited to be on the other side of it.
- 1:12I'm so excited to just be feeling like I can start to
- 1:16recover and I'm not going to get knocked down every week or every
- 1:19two weeks like I've been for the last five months.
- 1:23And it's a good, good feeling. During this process, I my effort
- 1:29has been to be transparent with all of you about what it looks
- 1:34like to be going through a cancer treatment process.
- 1:37Not just in terms of the actual treatment, but what it looks
- 1:41like to go through something hard and talk about it.
- 1:46So many times people will have something difficult happen to
- 1:50them and when they are going through that process, feel like
- 1:53they maybe have to shrink into the shadows and hideaway until
- 1:58things are all nicely tied up and cleaned up and they can
- 2:01emerge back into the world, back into their work, into their
- 2:05relationships, their projects, whatever it might be.
- 2:08I didn't want to do that. I didn't feel like 1.
- 2:12I had the luxury of doing that. It just wasn't possible for me.
- 2:15But also, people don't talk about processes as much as we
- 2:21would think that they would. A lot of people were telling me
- 2:24along this process, I had no idea what it looked like for
- 2:28somebody to go through chemotherapy, which is wild to
- 2:32me because there are so many people in your life, in my life
- 2:37who have had cancer, who might have cancer in the future and
- 2:41would get this type of treatment.
- 2:42And it's just not, it's not very much talked about.
- 2:46And so in the spirit of transparency, one of my goals
- 2:51was to shed a little bit of light on this and hopefully help
- 2:55people see that there are lots of ways that you can do it.
- 2:58You can still be in choice when you're going through something
- 3:01hard. You can still get up in the
- 3:03morning and move your body. You can still choose what kind
- 3:06of food you feed yourself and who you surround yourself with.
- 3:09And even when you're experiencing side effects,
- 3:12fatigue and dizziness or headaches or nausea or any of
- 3:16the things that might go along with a treatment like this, you
- 3:20can still function in the world. It's not like you're in the
- 3:22movies, laying bedridden, hiding away and, you know, feeling like
- 3:28you just can't function. That's so often is not the case.
- 3:33And in my last 15 years of clinical practice as an
- 3:36acupuncturist, I've seen so many patients navigate this process.
- 3:40And I was always really inspired by them.
- 3:43The fact that most people still work, still get up every morning
- 3:49and get their kids off to school and meet their deadlines and
- 3:54cook dinners for their families and do the house chores.
- 3:57They're doing all of these normal things.
- 3:59And I think it's really, really important that people understand
- 4:03that, that no matter what you're going through, whether it's, you
- 4:07know, an illness or an injury, if it's a divorce, if it's the
- 4:11loss of someone that you love, all of these things that are
- 4:15really hard, there is still a way for you to show up and be in
- 4:20choice around that in your life. So that's been a really big part
- 4:24of what I've been trying to communicate, not just in this
- 4:27podcast, but on social media and you know, in some of the things
- 4:30that I've been putting out content wise into the world In
- 4:34this episode today, what I wanted to share with you is just
- 4:38three quick lessons that I have learned in the last six months
- 4:42about what it feels like and looks like to go through a
- 4:45process that is similar to this, a process of hardship where you
- 4:50have to still keep showing up in your life and what that looks
- 4:54like and feels like to be able to do that.
- 4:56I will be honest with you, I am like really right on the cusp of
- 5:01being done with all of this, but there is still so much to learn.
- 5:05I have so many lessons that are going to hit me hard.
- 5:07I'm sure of it. My mom always said to me, check
- 5:11on your people six months to a year after something big has
- 5:16happened to them, after they've gone through something huge.
- 5:18Because there's no way that the brain can process all of the
- 5:22information that's coming at you.
- 5:23When you are going through treatment, when you are
- 5:27navigating the loss of someone you love, when you're going
- 5:29through a divorce, there is too much to process.
- 5:33You're in fight or flight. You're in survival mode.
- 5:36And so all this information is not really sinking in until some
- 5:42of the dust settles, some time passes, and you have some
- 5:46moments to really think and integrate the information that
- 5:50has been coming at you like a fire hose for the past however
- 5:54long. So I will tell you these lessons
- 5:58might change, but I don't want to just come at you once
- 6:01everything's all tidied up. I want to share with you what's
- 6:04on my heart and my mind as I'm navigating this right now.
- 6:08And so again, Spirit of Transparency, I want to give you
- 6:123 lessons that have really been coming up strongly for me,
- 6:16especially in the last month as I'm reflecting on what's been
- 6:21going on in my life with my community and my friends and my
- 6:24family. So let's dive into these.
- 6:27The first one is that people don't care about you as much as
- 6:30you think they do. People do not care about you as
- 6:34much as you think they do. And I say this with the most
- 6:38love and no judgement and no negativity at all.
- 6:42In fact, this is not meant to be sad at all.
- 6:44It's an absolute gift that people do not care about you as
- 6:48much as you think they do. It is such a gift because what
- 6:52it means to me is that you can do whatever you want with your
- 6:56life. You really can do whatever you
- 6:58want with your life. And people don't care that much.
- 7:00They might care for 5 minutes or five days if you're really
- 7:02famous, but then it's over and they don't care.
- 7:07And it is so clear to me that we have to have the courage to do
- 7:13the things that scare us. We have to take the risks that
- 7:16we've been wanting to take. We have to build the dreams in
- 7:19our life that we've been wanting to build more than ever.
- 7:23Because people don't care if you do.
- 7:26They don't care if you don't, and they don't care if you do.
- 7:29In fact, we are the only people who have to live in our bodies,
- 7:32with our life circumstances, in our communities.
- 7:35It is so crucial for us to be able to Shuck all of this fear
- 7:40of what other people think of us so that we can live our most
- 7:44authentic life and actually have the freaking impact that we want
- 7:47to have in the way that we could potentially have it if we lived
- 7:52courageously. I don't know about you, but I'm
- 7:55somebody who's always really kind of worried about what other
- 7:58people thought of me. People pleasing.
- 8:00I've talked about it. It's always been a thing for me.
- 8:03I want people to like me. I want people to approve of what
- 8:07I do. I've wanted to make sure that I
- 8:09was kind of following the rules. And this is since I was a little
- 8:12kid. And so to Shuck some of this
- 8:16stuff throughout the last 10 years, not care so much about
- 8:20what other people think. That has been a process for me.
- 8:24I will tell you what accelerates that process, going through a
- 8:29hardship like this. It absolutely is putting your
- 8:33foot on the gas pedal to not caring what other people think.
- 8:36Because you realize, my God, I am the only person who has to
- 8:41live in this body. I'm the only person who has to
- 8:43live with my choices and my decisions.
- 8:46At the end of the day, it's me who didn't take that risk.
- 8:49It's me who didn't have that hard conversation.
- 8:52And God, that matters so much. I just think it is the ultimate
- 8:57lesson of freedom. It's like somebody takes the
- 9:00glasses off of your eyes and you can see a totally different
- 9:03vision. When you realize that people
- 9:05don't care about you as much as they think you that you do.
- 9:07And my challenge with this lesson is to set aside some time
- 9:13to figure out what is it that you really want?
- 9:15Like, what are your huge dreams? What are the things you've been
- 9:18putting off in your life because you've been too afraid to
- 9:21explore them or pursue them? And have a discussion around it
- 9:24with your spouse or your partner.
- 9:27Or if it's just you, like your journal, have a discussion, a
- 9:30dialogue, and dream the hell out of that situation.
- 9:35Just have 20 to 30 minutes where you are allowing yourself to
- 9:40take the guardrails off your brain and go all in on dreaming
- 9:44so big without judgement, without worry, without fear
- 9:48about what other people might think and see what comes up.
- 9:52Because if you don't do it, no one else is going to do it for
- 9:54you. You have this one life.
- 9:57People talk about that all the time, but let me tell you, don't
- 10:01wait for an event or a hardship to spur on this taking the
- 10:05glasses off. Don't wait for it.
- 10:07Do it now. Allow yourself the space and
- 10:10give yourself permission to dream as big as you absolutely
- 10:13can so that you can do what you want in your life.
- 10:16So that's lesson 1. Lesson 2 You have to let people
- 10:21help you. This one makes me laugh only
- 10:26because I am absolutely the person who is the caretaker in
- 10:30my life. I was always the person who was
- 10:33tough, who didn't show the vulnerability, who didn't show
- 10:36any weakness, who made sure that I was the rock for everyone in
- 10:40my in my life, in my community. And this has been one of the
- 10:45most humbling experiences of my life is to realize to a level
- 10:51that I didn't understand before. And trust me, this is something
- 10:56we've all been working on. I didn't understand how
- 11:00important it is to let people in, to let people help you, to
- 11:05let people give you love and show love and show up for you
- 11:11and for you to receive that. Because here's the thing,
- 11:15relationships are about reciprocity.
- 11:18And if it is always you showing up for other people because
- 11:22you're the tough one or you're the rock or you're the
- 11:23dependable one, there is no reciprocity in the way that
- 11:28people don't feel like they can show up for you.
- 11:31And you take away that opportunity for your friends and
- 11:36your family and your loved ones to give you that energy.
- 11:40It has to be a give and take. And I know that you're probably
- 11:44nodding your head like, yeah, Steph, I get it.
- 11:47We don't fully integrate this. We don't live it.
- 11:51This might be common sense, but it's not common practice because
- 11:54so often people lead with their saboteurs, they lead with their
- 11:59limiting beliefs and their limiting stories.
- 12:01Just like I have in the past where I'd felt like I didn't
- 12:05need a lot of help. I was independent, I was tough,
- 12:08I didn't show the vulnerability. We might know that it's
- 12:11necessary, but common sense is not common practice.
- 12:15And the thing that I've really started to understand about this
- 12:17is we cannot be in fear of being vulnerable or looking weak or
- 12:24not being perceived as tough. We can't be afraid of that all
- 12:28the time because life will show you that it is inevitable that
- 12:33you will have moments of weakness and vulnerability.
- 12:36You will have cracks in your foundation.
- 12:39And thank God you do, because these things, this hardship that
- 12:43we face that forces the vulnerability and forces those
- 12:47cracks in the foundation, it's the stuff that breaks apart all
- 12:51the crappy old patterns that we don't want in our life.
- 12:54It is the stuff that causes us to grow and expand.
- 12:57And if we didn't have it, we would be stagnant.
- 13:00We would be stuck. And nobody wants that as a
- 13:03human. And so knowing that this is
- 13:06inevitable, it's a part of life, we also have to understand that
- 13:10we can't fear it all the time because if we're afraid all the
- 13:14time that we're going to show vulnerability or we are going to
- 13:17show some sort of weakness, all we are is a House of Cards ready
- 13:21to crumble at any moment. This experience has been such an
- 13:26eye opening one for me because right from the beginning my wife
- 13:30looked at me and said you're going to have to be vulnerable
- 13:32and you are going to have to ask for help.
- 13:35And I knew that on a logical level and I very much tried to
- 13:38open my heart to that, even though I wanted to put my
- 13:40defenses up and say, no, I'll be fine, I can handle this.
- 13:44I knew just the way that she was looking at me.
- 13:48I knew that what she was saying was so true.
- 13:51And so right at the beginning, I made a decision.
- 13:54I'm going to be open. I'm going to receive all the
- 13:57love that people give me and I'm going to tell them that I'm
- 14:00doing it. Every time somebody says I'm
- 14:03sending you light, I'm sending you love, prayers, whatever it
- 14:06was, I am going to tell them outright, I received that, thank
- 14:11you. I will take it, bring it on.
- 14:13Like whatever the language was, I wanted them to know that I
- 14:17wanted that love and support. And that was a game changer for
- 14:21me because what I recognized is that every time I did that, more
- 14:25would come my way. And every time more came my way,
- 14:29I felt better. I felt, I felt better.
- 14:33I felt higher frequency, I felt more energy, I could feel the
- 14:38relationship with that person also changing.
- 14:41The energy from that interaction made that relationship better.
- 14:45And so everything improved as a result of me just being in
- 14:50acceptance and being open to the idea that we have to receive
- 14:55help and let people help us. It's all about the reciprocity,
- 14:59baby. So that's lesson #2 and then
- 15:02finally, lesson 3 is your energy and your health is everything.
- 15:09And again, this might seem like the most obvious thing in the
- 15:12world, and I've said it in so many ways on this podcast, but
- 15:16I'm going to say it in this way. There is nothing more important
- 15:20than your energy and your health.
- 15:22Nothing. And I know that right now you
- 15:25are probably pouring a lot of your energy into other things in
- 15:29your life and neglecting parts of your health.
- 15:32I know that because I work with so many different people in
- 15:35different capacities, and I see it in almost every single person
- 15:39aside from like maybe 10% of people.
- 15:42We ignore the big needle movers. We ignore our health.
- 15:46We ignore our energy. And I'm not talking about all
- 15:51the biohacking and all the specific minutiae and nuanced
- 15:57health habits. I'm not talking about that.
- 15:58I'm talking about the main stuff.
- 16:00I'm talking about sleeping and eating well and moving your body
- 16:04and protecting your mental and emotional energy.
- 16:07If you are not doing that, you are majoring in the minors.
- 16:12You are, you are setting yourself up for something that
- 16:16will derail you in the future. And I'm, I don't mean to sound
- 16:19harsh, but I want to say this with urgency because I got to
- 16:25tell you, when you feel your health is at risk, you feel
- 16:28everything is at risk. If you lose your health,
- 16:33everything is lost because you don't have capacity or energy to
- 16:37work on your career or you don't.
- 16:40You can't travel, you can't seek out new opportunities, you can't
- 16:43network, you can't get promoted, you can't build better
- 16:46relationships. You can't work on your
- 16:47confidence, you can't improve your conflict resolution.
- 16:51None of that stuff matters when your health is at risk.
- 16:54And I wish more coaches would say it this way.
- 16:57I think we're doing a disservice to people because what I
- 17:00recognize is everybody's looking for a fast solution.
- 17:03People want speed when it comes to success.
- 17:06They want to earn more money, they want to climb the ladder.
- 17:08They want to have better relationships.
- 17:10Great. I love all of that.
- 17:12I think it's wonderful to have those types of desires.
- 17:15You want to know the answer, how to get better at all those
- 17:17things? Get better energy.
- 17:19Truly get better energy. Work on your health habits.
- 17:23Go from A6 or A7 out of 10 energy and go to a 10 out of 10.
- 17:27If you focus on that, all of those things will improve.
- 17:30You want to launch that project you've been working on for
- 17:32years. Get better energy.
- 17:34You want to be more creative. Get better energy.
- 17:36You want to have that relationship with your spouse,
- 17:38that awesome marriage. Get better energy.
- 17:40All of these things will improve because you will handle stress
- 17:44better, you will have a greater tolerance to extremity, you will
- 17:48be more resilient, you'll be more creative, you'll be more
- 17:51loving, you'll be more open. All of these things improve when
- 17:56you have better energy. And we just waste so much time.
- 17:59And I just, I can't emphasize it enough because I have
- 18:02experienced now what it feels like to feel really knocked down
- 18:08in your energy, to feel tremendous fatigue, not only
- 18:11physically, but mentally. To just feel like your brain
- 18:14doesn't work because chemo really like causes a tremendous
- 18:17amount of brain fog to just feel not like yourself.
- 18:22If you don't have access to that energy, that just source energy
- 18:27within you, trust me, you are shortchanging yourself.
- 18:31You are cutting yourself at the knees.
- 18:34The last thing I will say about this lesson specifically is we
- 18:38also have to be careful about not giving away all of our
- 18:41energy all the damn time, because we do.
- 18:44We give away our energy to social media, to news, to
- 18:48Netflix, to other people's emails, basically other people's
- 18:53agendas, right? I mean, all of that screen time,
- 18:57all of this time in front of the TV and scrolling and answering
- 19:01emails 17 times a day, all of that is other people's agendas.
- 19:06And essentially we're just depleting ourself for someone
- 19:09else or for marketers when it comes to social media and news
- 19:14and all that stuff. So that is lesson #3 your energy
- 19:19and your health is everything. Now, again, I am going to
- 19:23reserve the right to change any of my thoughts on these in the
- 19:27future. I'm, this is very preliminary.
- 19:30All of these things that I'm sharing with you.
- 19:32I'm, I know that there's going to be more processing and more
- 19:35lessons to come, but I wanted to share these things because I
- 19:39think they very seriously relate to the amount of impact that we
- 19:42can have in our lives. I've noticed it in my own, I've
- 19:46seen it in other people, and I think it's worthy of a
- 19:49conversation. So I hope that these three
- 19:52lessons are helpful to you. And I hope that this week you
- 19:54can think about how all of these are applying to how you are
- 19:58living your life because I know that you are a person of
- 20:00tremendous impact, and I want the best for you.
- 20:03So thank you for listening to this episode and humoring me in
- 20:07my preliminary lessons. I appreciate you being here.
- 20:10Hope you have a great week. And as always, thank you for
- 20:12being ready to Impact. Thanks for listening to Impact
- 20:16Ready. I hope today's episode inspired
- 20:18you to own your impact and recognize that you are powerful.
- 20:22By elevating our energy and awareness, we can create
- 20:25exponential change in this life. If you enjoyed today's insights,
- 20:29share them with a friend and subscribe to the show for more.
- 20:31I truly appreciate you. Thanks again for being here.
