- 2:27Speaker 4: Could eat a whole hog.
- 2:28Speaker 2: All the hog you got this morning's cooking on that
- 2:30Speaker 2: stick right there?
- 2:31Speaker 3: Chester, Is it done?
- 2:34Speaker 2: That depends on how hungry you are.
- 2:36Speaker 5: It's done, so it will be good to get back
- 2:44Speaker 5: to Dodge to night and sleeping in bed again.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Civilization has made you soft, Chester.
- 2:51Speaker 6: Maybe so, but I get mighty tired of using my
- 2:53Speaker 6: back for a mattress and my belly for covering.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Obviously, Chester, you were born for greater things and roding
- 3:00Speaker 2: around on the priory and living in the rain.
- 3:03Speaker 3: It hasn't been raining, mister Dillon.
- 3:05Speaker 2: No, no, it hasn't. But it well, Chester, sooner.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Ear later it'll rain, Sir.
- 3:11Speaker 6: We've brought some more bacon. See don't old man Granby
- 3:16Speaker 6: live around here? Maybe we could borrow a old from him.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Well, according to what I've always heard, old Granby wouldn't
- 3:22Speaker 2: loan anybody or anything.
- 3:26Speaker 6: You really think he's a rich minder like to say, Oh, I.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Don't know, Chester, Sometimes a man's entirely different from his reputation.
- 3:35Speaker 2: I only met Granby once or twice. He seemed like
- 3:38Speaker 2: a nice enough old.
- 3:38Speaker 6: Fella, though, Well, I wouldn't want to live out here
- 3:42Speaker 6: all alone with nothing but a few horses for company.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Oh, he's used to it.
- 3:46Speaker 6: Well, even if he does have a lot of money
- 3:48Speaker 6: hid away, there's no place to spending out here.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Bramley's pretty old for the pleasures Dodge has to offer. Chester.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Well, I hope I am never that old.
- 4:01Speaker 2: At the rate you're burning yourself out Chester, you never
- 4:04Speaker 2: will be, so don't worry about it.
- 4:06Speaker 4: Oh I missed doing.
- 4:08Speaker 6: I live mighty quiet for a young fella who's free
- 4:10Speaker 6: and still full of blood. Sure, Hey, we'll go over there.
- 4:16Speaker 6: H Now that's springing dust laying right on the ground there.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I've been watching the Chester. It's not on the
- 4:22Speaker 2: ground though, As a dry wash runs along there. Somebody's
- 4:26Speaker 2: driving stock down it.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Maybe it's old man Granby.
- 4:29Speaker 2: That may be that's gonna say hello.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Alright.
- 4:33Speaker 6: Sure, if it is old man Granby, we might just
- 4:42Speaker 6: ask him about a little bacon.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Huh uh, I can ask him no harm in that hell.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Now that's horses, sir, Yes, sir, I.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Can keee the head.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Now, I don't see anybody driving him.
- 5:06Speaker 2: I'll be along in a minute. Hell, let's right here.
- 5:15Speaker 4: There he comes.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Yeah, Hello, he stopped. That's not old Grandley. Let's write
- 5:26Speaker 2: down and say hello anyway.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Cool.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Now that's Grandy's brand on those horses, so he must
- 5:41Speaker 2: have hired him a hand here maybe hello?
- 5:54Speaker 3: Hello?
- 5:55Speaker 2: Are you working for Granvey?
- 5:58Speaker 4: And I ain't working for nobody? Mister huh?
- 6:01Speaker 2: And where is he? Whereas who Granby?
- 6:06Speaker 4: I don't know, No Granby?
- 6:07Speaker 2: Those are his horses? You're driving?
- 6:10Speaker 4: Oh they are? Yeah, I ain't driving him. What do
- 6:17Speaker 4: you mean they got ahead of me in the wash here?
- 6:20Speaker 2: That's all I see? Your cowboy?
- 6:25Speaker 4: Yeah, sure, I'm a cowboy.
- 6:28Speaker 2: You don't look like one. You don't ride like one either.
- 6:33Speaker 4: You're asking the questions, mister.
- 6:36Speaker 2: No decent cowboy'd run another man's horses down a dry
- 6:39Speaker 2: wash just because he didn't want to get up on
- 6:41Speaker 2: the bank and ride around him.
- 6:43Speaker 4: I told you they got in front of him, is all.
- 6:47Speaker 2: How come you're not carrying a gun?
- 6:50Speaker 4: Does a man have to carry a gun?
- 6:52Speaker 3: No?
- 6:53Speaker 2: I bet you're the only man within a thousand miles
- 6:55Speaker 2: of here who isn't carrying one.
- 6:57Speaker 4: Maybe I got a better conscience than the rest.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Maybe. Look, mister, you've run those horses about five miles
- 7:06Speaker 2: off of Old Granby's place. You want to give us
- 7:08Speaker 2: a hand, We'll run him back.
- 7:10Speaker 4: I'm in a hurry.
- 7:11Speaker 2: He won't take long. The old man might be a
- 7:14Speaker 2: couple of days finding them.
- 7:15Speaker 4: If we don't, you worry about him. I gotta get
- 7:18Speaker 4: in to die.
- 7:19Speaker 2: We'll ride in with you afterwards.
- 7:22Speaker 4: I ain't gonna do it.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Look a lot better if you did. I.
- 7:29Speaker 4: I'd like to mister, but I can't wait. I'm leaving
- 7:32Speaker 4: now so long. You gonna let him go?
- 7:39Speaker 2: Miss Wait a minute, Chester, I'll let him hear what
- 7:43Speaker 2: lead sounds like.
- 7:47Speaker 5: Don't jo me?
- 7:48Speaker 2: All right? Then ride back here.
- 7:58Speaker 4: Don't kill me, mister.
- 7:59Speaker 2: I'm not gonna unless you try to run away.
- 8:04Speaker 4: Why would I try to run away?
- 8:06Speaker 2: You just did? Chester, Yes, right down the back and
- 8:10Speaker 2: have those horses off, starting back up the wash. We'll
- 8:12Speaker 2: be out of here by the time they're back, all right,
- 8:14Speaker 2: mister Dillon, you'll stay right close to me. Fellow, don't
- 8:19Speaker 2: try anything smart. We got the grand vis. If he
- 8:22Speaker 2: says it's okay, then you can go wherever you.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Like, I don't know Granby, never been there.
- 8:28Speaker 2: I will show you the way. Come on, let's get
- 8:30Speaker 2: up on the bank.
- 8:51Speaker 6: Oh, man Grahanby can find these horses all right now, mister.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Dillon, Yeah, but I want this cowboy here to meet him.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Let's see if he's in the house.
- 9:02Speaker 4: Oh, I'll wait for you.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Get off that horse, Fellar, go on, Hm, that's but
- 9:12Speaker 2: I come on, we'll take a look. Well, what are
- 9:30Speaker 2: you waiting for.
- 9:32Speaker 4: Nothing?
- 9:35Speaker 2: You go ahead, Chester, Yes, you miss your John. Looks
- 9:37Speaker 2: like I'll have to herd this man. And you've been
- 9:46Speaker 2: kind of balky ever since we run into you. Mister.
- 9:49Speaker 4: I don't like being dragged around. I never did.
- 9:52Speaker 2: I just want you to meet all grand Bay. He'll
- 9:54Speaker 2: be grateful for you help and run his horse's back here.
- 9:59Speaker 7: I n now what you think, Mr. You think I
- 10:02Speaker 7: was stealing them horses? Well, I never heard of the
- 10:05Speaker 7: old man. I was never near this place.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Yea, I saw you told me. But you're here now.
- 10:10Speaker 4: I am afraid of you or nobody.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Then let's go into the house. Come on, Mr Jeng Yeah,
- 10:22Speaker 2: what is this.
- 10:22Speaker 4: Terse old man grand Begin he's in there?
- 10:28Speaker 6: Or what's wrong right in the room here? Mister gunn
- 10:30Speaker 6: he's hanging there. What somebody's gone and hung him right
- 10:34Speaker 6: in his own house. Uh I, I don't wanna see
- 10:37Speaker 6: him anymore.
- 10:37Speaker 4: You go take a look.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Put your gun and hold it on this Manchester. If
- 10:41Speaker 2: he makes a mold, shoot him.
- 10:42Speaker 4: Yes, Now you just stand there real quietly. I ain't
- 10:49Speaker 4: gonna do nothing. You sure ain't.
- 10:56Speaker 7: Just because I happen to be in the country, it
- 10:58Speaker 7: don't mean I killed no one.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Mister Dillon will decide about that.
- 11:04Speaker 4: Who is this mister Dylon anyway?
- 11:06Speaker 6: He's a United States marshal. AT's who a marshall? Looks
- 11:11Speaker 6: like you run into the wrong people, fella.
- 11:15Speaker 2: I'll hold your gun, Chester, start.
- 11:16Speaker 5: You alright, you get.
- 11:19Speaker 4: Around the ride, turn around.
- 11:28Speaker 2: The house is all torn up. He must have been
- 11:30Speaker 2: looking for old grand Vy's money.
- 11:32Speaker 4: And I was never in that house. There's nothing on him,
- 11:35Speaker 4: not a thing.
- 11:36Speaker 2: All right, Chester, here's your gun, catch it, thank you? Alright? Now?
- 11:41Speaker 2: What's your name, fella?
- 11:43Speaker 3: Tremble?
- 11:45Speaker 4: Joe Tremble?
- 11:46Speaker 2: Where you're from?
- 11:48Speaker 4: Up north?
- 11:48Speaker 2: Up north?
- 11:49Speaker 3: Where all over?
- 11:52Speaker 2: What are you doing down here? Tremble?
- 11:54Speaker 4: Taking a change?
- 11:56Speaker 2: Yeah? Sure? And some cowboy you run into it? Told
- 12:00Speaker 2: you about Grand v b and rich. So you came
- 12:03Speaker 2: here and kicked the old man around and hung him
- 12:06Speaker 2: and then tried to find the money. That's a lie.
- 12:08Speaker 4: It's the first time I was ever near the place.
- 12:10Speaker 2: I'm sure you did a tremble, but I wish I
- 12:12Speaker 2: had more evidence. A court of law just might not
- 12:14Speaker 2: convict you.
- 12:15Speaker 4: The way things stand, you're gonna let me go.
- 12:18Speaker 2: No, I'm arresting you, and you're gonna stand trial, and
- 12:23Speaker 2: I'll do my best to see you hung.
- 12:26Speaker 4: I didn't do what I tell you, and I'll go
- 12:28Speaker 4: free to You'll.
- 12:29Speaker 2: See there's something mighty wrong about you tremble, and I
- 12:33Speaker 2: can't figure it at all, but I'll sure find out.
- 12:58Speaker 3: Mother.
- 12:58Speaker 1: It does your heart good.
- 12:59Speaker 4: I know when your young.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Folks eat all of their breakfast cereal.
- 13:03Speaker 1: That's why I'm so happy to tell you about new
- 13:05Speaker 1: sugar crinkles. Sugar Crinkles, you know, is the sugar rice treat.
- 13:09Speaker 1: That's just right, sweet crisp, golden nuggets of sugar coated rice.
- 13:15Speaker 1: They make breakfast more fun than a circus. Why young
- 13:18Speaker 1: folks love sugar crinkles so much. They disappear like magic.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Now you've had experience with sugar coated cereals it seemed
- 13:25Speaker 1: too sweet to you, and others that just don't seem
- 13:29Speaker 1: sweet enough to the youngsters. Well, what a wonderful surprise
- 13:32Speaker 1: sugar crinkles will be to your whole family. For new
- 13:36Speaker 1: sugar crinkles really are just right sweet. Remember, sugar crinkles

- 14:04Speaker 1: Crinkles as soon as you can. Now, back to gun Smoke.
- 14:29Speaker 2: We let Joe Tremble dig a grave up behind the house.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Then we laid Old Granby in it and covered him
- 14:37Speaker 2: with dirt. I was pretty sure now that the old
- 14:41Speaker 2: man had never had an extra dollar in his life,
- 14:44Speaker 2: and that he'd been killed for no reason at all. Anyway,
- 14:49Speaker 2: Tremble had done a pretty thorough job looking for the money,
- 14:51Speaker 2: and he'd found nothing. On the right of the dodge.
- 14:57Speaker 2: I tried to figure out just what he was. He
- 15:01Speaker 2: didn't seem to fit anywhere he wasn't a cowboy or
- 15:05Speaker 2: a dunter, or a gambler or even just a drifter.
- 15:12Speaker 2: After we got him locked up in jail. That night,
- 15:14Speaker 2: Doc and I went over to the Texas Trail for
- 15:17Speaker 2: a drink with Kitty, and I was telling him about it.
- 15:22Speaker 4: Yeah. Then this fellow Tremble, how old is he?
- 15:28Speaker 3: Oh?
- 15:28Speaker 2: Around twenty five, I guess, Doctor.
- 15:32Speaker 3: Then he couldn't be running away from home.
- 15:35Speaker 2: No, he's a little old for that, kiddie. Well, anyway,
- 15:39Speaker 2: they'll hang him. Well, I hope the judge agrees with you, doctor,
- 15:43Speaker 2: Why shouldn't he All I got so far is circumstantial evidence.
- 15:47Speaker 2: But then you should have shot him out on a prayrie.
- 15:51Speaker 2: It's a good thing you're not a law man.
- 15:53Speaker 6: Well maybe if I were, there'd be fewer killings around here.
- 15:58Speaker 2: I dot that dog.
- 16:00Speaker 3: You going up to haze for the trial.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Man, I'll have to Kitty. That'll take a week, I suppose, Oh, Bob,
- 16:09Speaker 2: why yes, nothing.
- 16:12Speaker 3: Only you've just been away for ten days.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Uh have to wear in a living, Kitty.
- 16:17Speaker 4: You can make more money gambling right here and dodge.
- 16:20Speaker 2: No, kiddy, don't start that good evening, Marshall, Oh major,
- 16:27Speaker 2: I'd like a word with you, Marshall. Sure, Major, So
- 16:31Speaker 2: we can go over to the barn, right, I'll be back, Kitty.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Doc, No hurry, Matt.
- 16:36Speaker 4: Doc's got a lot of money. Oh no, buy you.
- 16:39Speaker 2: One drink, Kitty, just one drink.
- 16:40Speaker 6: Men's all, well it's a start, Doc, let's.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Go meet you.
- 16:46Speaker 3: I had to come to Dogs on other business, Marshalmen,
- 16:49Speaker 3: but I wanted to pass the word to you that
- 16:51Speaker 3: we're looking for a man like oh they honey, yes,
- 16:55Speaker 3: uh deserter, Oh not from Fort Dogs?
- 16:59Speaker 2: Well what Major?
- 17:01Speaker 3: He's with a seventh Cavalry at Fort Lincoln.
- 17:03Speaker 2: How utn'tly the coded Uh?
- 17:05Speaker 3: And for some reason they think he hit it south. Now.
- 17:07Speaker 3: I don't have much of a description of him, just
- 17:10Speaker 3: that he was a private about or twenty five, curly
- 17:14Speaker 3: blonde hair and uh hit a scar on his left hand.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Yeah, that fits. What's his name? Major?
- 17:23Speaker 3: He enlisted as Joe Good, but he's known to have
- 17:26Speaker 3: used the name Timboo.
- 17:27Speaker 2: All he's right here in Dodge. What I got him
- 17:32Speaker 2: locked up in jail?
- 17:34Speaker 3: Well, Uh, that's fine, Marshall, But how did you know?
- 17:37Speaker 2: I think he murdered an old man who lived a
- 17:39Speaker 2: day's ride north of here. I'm gonna have him tried
- 17:43Speaker 2: for it, and.
- 17:44Speaker 3: That won't be necessary now, Marshall, I'll take over custody.
- 17:46Speaker 2: Of now now, Hm, then he'd be tried at Fort
- 17:49Speaker 2: Lincoln for desertion. I want him tried for murder, and
- 17:52Speaker 2: I gotta be there to present the evidence.
- 17:54Speaker 3: You could go up to Fort Lincoln.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Now that Dakotas are out of my territory. Major. Besides,
- 17:58Speaker 2: this is a civil crime.
- 18:00Speaker 3: The army wants that man, Marshall.
- 18:02Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Major, he's going to be tried in Haze First,
- 18:06Speaker 2: he's still a soldier. Even if he did dessert, I'll
- 18:10Speaker 2: judge lets him off. You can have him, but not otherwise. Major,
- 18:15Speaker 2: he tortured and hung an innocent old man, and I'm
- 18:17Speaker 2: going to do my best to see him punished for it.
- 18:21Speaker 3: Well, I'll have to take this up with my superiors. Marshall.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Yeah, you better hurry. I'm going to Haze with him tomorrow.
- 18:26Speaker 2: I hope you won't regret this, Marshal. I won't, Major,
- 18:31Speaker 2: O I Tremble is properly punished, I won't. I didn't
- 18:42Speaker 2: wait till morning, but started up for Haze with Joe
- 18:45Speaker 2: Tremble that night The trial lasted a week, and in
- 18:50Speaker 2: spite of all the arguments I made, a judge finally
- 18:54Speaker 2: decided that there wasn't enough real evidence to convict him.
- 18:59Speaker 2: I even tried to make Tremble confess that he was
- 19:02Speaker 2: too smart for that. So there was nothing to do.
- 19:05Speaker 3: But bring him back.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Turning moment of the Army, I said word to Fort Dodge,
- 19:11Speaker 2: and the next morning the Major himself appeared to take
- 19:15Speaker 2: him into custody.
- 19:18Speaker 3: Well, Marshall, it looks as though you didn't have much
- 19:22Speaker 3: of a civil case after he.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Killed Old Granby. I know he did, Major, after all
- 19:28Speaker 2: the laws of the.
- 19:29Speaker 3: Law, yes, and in the army orders and orders. I'm
- 19:33Speaker 3: just sorry you're a judge didn't convict him after all?
- 19:36Speaker 1: How is that so?
- 19:37Speaker 3: Uh? Chester?
- 19:38Speaker 2: Yes, you bring Tremble out him?
- 19:40Speaker 3: All right, you.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Major. I'll give the Army credit for one thing.
- 19:47Speaker 3: M what's that?
- 19:48Speaker 2: Tremble and I rode back some eighty miles yesterday, and
- 19:51Speaker 2: when we got here, he wanted to sit up and
- 19:54Speaker 2: play cards with Chester.
- 19:55Speaker 3: Huh. There may be some bad men in the cavalry, Marshall,
- 19:59Speaker 3: but they're all tough.
- 20:02Speaker 4: He's miss Dylan.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Uh, he's yours Major, Private tremble, Sir, you're under military arrest.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Private not privileged to salute besides you and mister of
- 20:18Speaker 2: this private.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Gool not tremble, Yes, sir, report to the guard outside.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Yes, sir, Uh just a minute, tremble. You uh know
- 20:33Speaker 2: that you're mighty lucky, don't you. You shoulda died for
- 20:37Speaker 2: what you've done.
- 20:40Speaker 4: I told you i'd go free, Marshall.
- 20:44Speaker 2: It'll catch up with you someday, tremble. It always does.
- 20:46Speaker 2: And uh, that's all I wanted to say.
- 20:53Speaker 3: Yes, Well, thank you, Marshall. I'll be getting along.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Oh Major Uh you said that, uh you were sorry
- 21:11Speaker 2: that the judge didn't convict him. Why have you changed
- 21:15Speaker 2: your mind? Well?
- 21:16Speaker 3: I have orders from General Terry to return him to
- 21:18Speaker 3: the Dakotas, to Fort Lincoln.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Rather, they'll be tried there, but he won't be wrong
- 21:22Speaker 2: for just desertion.
- 21:24Speaker 3: Oddly enough, Marshall, he won't even be tried for some
